Visitor comments
- "I took the hour long coastal tour with Trans Cote D'Azur and enjoyed it. The tour takes you to the next bay, for fantastic views of the yachts and Villefranche. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He pointed out several of the famous villas on the surrounding hills, which I wouldn't have known about otherwise. This tour was a great way to get onto the water and see the Cote d'Azur from a different angle, even if it is a bit more expensive than I would have expected." - Trip Advisor
- "Went on the Coastal Tour. It's fabulous. Great guide on the boat who will tell you about each area & show you where all the rich & famous live. It's a must do activity in Nice." - Trip Advisor
- "We took this coastal sightseeing tour from Nice Harbour. The tour lasts 1 hour approximately and starts at 11am and 3pm from Nice Harbour. Our french tour guide described the coastal landmarks in great detail both in french and good English. After coming out of the harbour the boat turns left towards Cap de Nice and then into the Villefranche bay skirting along Cape Ferrat with its multi-million pound villas. It then returns to Nice along Promenade de Anglais before it ends at the harbour. The boat has 2 decks with great photo opportunities of the coast from the sea. Light refreshments can be bought on the boat as well. They also have tours to Monaco, St Tropez and Cannes daily but the prices range from 38 euros to 50 euros. This tour is definitely worth it as it gives a different perspective of Nice and surrounding coastal areas." - Trip Advisor
- "The Trans Cote d'Azur Company is located at the Port of Nice and is clearly marked, a bit more than half way from the bottom end of the port. It was a comfortable ride from the Promenade des Anglais and into the bay at Cap Ferrat. Nice to see how the other half lives and the pretty beach at the end of the bay at Cap Ferrat. Had English earphones with a good narration. Good to see Nice from the water on a warm sunny day." - Trip Advisor

The French coastline has more than 2,000 miles of sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, and rolling waves that are great for surfing. In many other places, the sea is calm, clear, and azure in color. One thing’s for certain if you’re looking for places to live in France and being near the water is important, there are plenty of great French beach towns situated close to its beautiful coastline.
Living in France near the coast brings so many merits. Certainly, looking out over the ocean is a great mood booster and helps reduce stress. The cleaner air and higher levels of vitamin D will help you to feel better, and being by the sea definitely promotes a more active lifestyle.
Here are France’s best coastal towns and cities you will truly enjoy:
3. Honfleur
4. Trouville sur Mer
Trouville sur Mer is a great choice for those who want to visit this part of France to as it lies within close proximity of the Normandy beaches and it really is an attractive coastal town in France.
Brest appeals to beach lovers too as just a couple of kilometers further west is a really special spot called Pointe du Petit Minou. This is a pretty sandy cove with great rolling waves which are popular with surfers.
Although Quimper has a lovely sea front to enjoy for a leisurely stroll, its nearest beach, the pretty beach of Saint Gilles Beach – Bénodet is 20 km from the city center and is one of ten beaches in the close vicinity. In and around Quimper there are numerous restaurants serving ocean-fresh seafood and excellent local cider.
7. La Rochelle
There is plenty to see and do in La Rochelle and after exploring this coastal French city it is fun to stretch out on one of its three sandy beaches “Plage de la Concurrence” is just a 5-minute walk from the city center and is ideal for families. The beach also has an access ramp for wheelchair users. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the sea with boat trips plus kite boarding and jet ski rental. Just outside the city, you will find Châtelaillon beach – said to be one of the best beaches in Charente Maritime. The whole area is well known for its oysters and you will find numerous oyster farms strung along the coast.
8. Arcachon
Arcachon is considered one of the best French beach towns and this is certainly reflected in the house prices! Arcachon is situated in south-west France and is famous for its oysters. The town is divided into four districts – all named after a different season.
You will find all the shops and the main sandy beach in Ville d’Été (summer). In Ville d’Hiver (winter) there are gorgeous 19th-century villas to admire. Just south of the town, stands the highest sand dune in Europe, the Dune du Pilat, which measure 102 metres. It is hard work scrambling to the top but the view makes the effort really worthwhile.
9. Biarritz
Situated on the country’s south western coast overlooking the Atlantic, stands Biarritz which is a very chic and fashionable French beach town that was first made popular by Emperor Napoleon III and his Spanish wife Eugenie. Biarritz soon became popular with many European monarchs including Queen Victoria. Biarritz has beautiful beaches with rolling surf that is much loved by surfers and the town hosts a popular surfing competition every summer. Biarritz is well known for its center for thalassotherapy which uses the local sea water in all of its treatments.
This delightful French beach town lies just a few kilometers from the border with Spain and this is reflected in the regional cuisine which is a wonderful blend of French and Spanish specialties. There is a lovely promenade that links the town’s two main beaches.
10. Saint-Jean-de-Luz
The town has always been strongly linked with Louis IV, the Sun King, as the king was married in the beautiful church of Saint Jean-Bapiste in the town. There are colorful half-timbered houses in the town and the Maison Louis XIV Museum in the town has scenes that portray life in the 17th century and the exhibit include the king’s bed.
11. Marseille
As well as enjoying the beaches, the Old Town with its winding narrow streets is fun to explore. While you are in the city, it is fun to try some of the famous local dishes which include: Salade Niçoise, Ratatouille, Daube Niçoise (beef casseroled red wine). Pissaladière (a flan made with caramelized onions and anchovies) and Socca the tasty street food which is a flatbread made from chickpea flour. The perfect accompaniment to all of these is a glass of local wine!
There are so many lovely beaches and coastal towns and cities in France and each is special as it has its own individual character. Whether you like action-packed beaches with water sports, quiet, secluded coves with soft golden sand or coastal towns where you can relax with a chilled glass or fine or cider, you will definitely find the ideal place for you among France’s amazing coastal spots.

Harbour Town Golf Links just one gem in golf-rich state of South Carolina
Harbour Town Golf Links is just one piece of the diverse tapestry of golf found in the state of South Carolina. (Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)
Change Text Size
South Carolina, known as the Palmetto State, boasts 351 golf courses that form a remarkably varied offering. From coastal gems, broad-based meadowland layouts and even courses up in the mountains in the western part of the state, the variety runs the gamut. Additionally, designs range from exclusive private clubs and real estate ventures to resort courses and remarkably affordable daily fee and municipal layouts. Moreover, golf in South Carolina is a year-round affair. In short, it’s an ideal state for diverse golf.
The state is particularly strong as a golf destination, whether for public players seeking affordable access, resort goers seeking a golf vacation, or second-home residents from other states. Data drawn from the National Golf Foundation shows that four out of every 10 rounds played in South Carolina come from out-of-state players. That’s the fourth-highest total in the country. The state has two of the four most intense regional markets in the country: the Grand Strand north and south of Myrtle Beach, and the Hilton Head-Bluffton-Beaufort area. Both are heavy on the side of resort and residential golf.
Among the draws – besides the favorable, virtually year-round golf season – is the quality of golf in South Carolina.
Harbour Town Golf Links, this week’s perennial host venue for the PGA TOUR’s RBC Heritage, is a Pete Dye-designed gem that debuted in 1969 to much acclaim for its low-lying intimacy through native corridors of live oaks and pines. It was a revolutionary golf course in its day for its small greens, reliance on all of 4-5 feet of elevation change across the entire site, and finish along the Calibogue Sound, with the iconic lighthouse behind the 18 th green.

Back then, land developer Charles Fraser was just trying to establish the island as a golf destination. He seems to have succeeded beyond even his ambitious dreams, what with two dozen golf courses now on the island and at least another 30 on the mainland side in the corridor between Savannah and Beaufort.
These, too, run the gamut of design character, including elegant real estate developments like the 36-hole properties of Colleton River, Belfair and Berkely Hall; the upscale sensibility of a resort-like May River Golf Club; or the privacy of intimate clubs like Chechessee Creek, Old Tabby Links and Secession. All are routed within the native land shaped by the Intracoastal Waterway. Their playing character changes with the tide and the wind.
Up in the Charleston area, the quality of golf starts with two classic Seth Raynor designs: the Country Club of Charleston (1925) and Yeamans Hall Club (1926).
The picturesque clubhouse at the Country Club of Charleston during the 2019 U.S. Women's Open Championship. (Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)
These are both private clubs, though anyone playing the recently restored Charleston Municipal Golf Course would find Raynor’s influence palpable here as well, even though he did not directly design the course. When it comes to impressive coastal properties, Wild Dunes Resort’s Links Course (1981) still resonates with golfers four decades after it opened. Credit for that is due to the pristine nature of the site on Isle of Palms that designer Tom Fazio inherited and the way his chief shaper there, a young upstart named Mike Strantz, let his creativity run free.
Strantz further solidified his reputation as an unparalleled artisan with such designs as Bulls Bay Golf Club in the Charleston area and both Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and True Blue Golf Club up on Pawleys Island in the Myrtle Beach area.
There, they joined the region’s first golf course, Pine Lakes Country Club (Robert White, 1927), and the region’s first nationally acclaimed design, Dunes Golf and Beach Club (Robert Trent Jones Sr., 1949). By the end of the 20 th century, there were more than 100 courses in the region, including four resort layouts at Barefoot Landing, two at Grande Dunes Resort and Tidewater Golf Club.
Inland, the state has just as much quality to offer. The Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken sports the distinctive design flair of Herbert Leeds (1890s), complemented by a wedge-shaped clubhouse with eyebrow windows that is the 1902 handiwork of Stanford White, who also designed the famous clubhouse of Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island.
A look at the 5th hole of the Palmetto Golf Club. (David Cannon/Getty Images)
On the other side of town in Aiken Golf Club, a 1912 design that maxes out at 5,795 yards and yet holds up well for its Pinehurst style of shot-making demands. Small wonder it is a favorite among golfers gathered in the area during Masters week.
In the more mountainous, western half of South Carolina, the golf tends to be much more parkland-oriented. That’s the appeal of the seven-course residential golf repertoire comprising The Cliffs communities, which brought to bear the design talents of Tom Fazio, Tom Jackson, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Ben Wright. The Player-designed Cliffs at Mountain Park (2013) in Travelers Rest, 25 miles north of Greenville, is an intimately routed, very walkable course. Its vast sand splashes and wide fairways straddle the North Saluda River along a valley that sits 1,600 feet above sea level in the Blue Ridge Mountains – hardly your conventional real estate golf course.
When it comes to drama that contrasts with South Carolina’s coastal golf treasures, you can’t find a sharper counterpoint than The Cliffs at Glassy (1994) in Landrum, 11 miles east of Mountain Park. The Cliffs at Glassy, which tops out at 3,353 feet above sea level, feels like golf on the roof of the world – or at least of the Palmetto State. If it doesn’t take your breath away, it will at least make you gasp at the distant views.
For all this strength of its diverse golf offerings, the supply is still getting more interesting. Two courses east of Aiken have just debuted and already have caught the buzz of social media architecture aficionados. Old Barnwell, by Brian Schneider and Blake Conant of Tom Doak’s Renaissance Golf Design team, fills up a sandy, 575-acre site that provides plenty of room for distinct angles and alternate paths of play. Though a private club, it has a mission of inclusivity and public service that ensures its place in the greater community of state golf and sports culture.
The Tree Farm, midway between Aiken and the state capital in Columbia, is the product of PGA TOUR member Zac Blair’s imagination, a routing by Tom Doak, and the shaping skills of Kye Goalby. It’s South Carolina’s version of a trendy place like Sweetens Cove Golf Club in Tennessee or Landman Golf Club in Nebraska – golf for hearty walkers who love the game, play fast, utilize the ground game and cannot wait to tee it up again.
The vast scale of the land provides a very unconventional scope for the golf. Think of it as Mike Strantz’s Caledonia Golf & Fish Club on a much larger canvas.
When it comes to interesting golf, South Carolina menu of courses offers a wide variety that appeals to players of every imaginable sort. Small wonder it’s such a strong golf destination.

Epson Tour’s Circling Raven Championship runs its course after three years
The Circling Raven Championship is no longer on the Epson Tour schedule after a three-year run at Circling Raven Golf Club.
The original three-year contract between the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, which operates the award-winning course in Worley, and the Epson Tour, the LPGA’s developmental tour, expired after the 2023 tournament last August.
“Yes, basically,” Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel CEO Laura Penney said, when asked if it was a business decision not to continue hosting the tournament. “We pursued the Symetra Tour (renamed the Epson Tour in 2022), it was a great group of ladies and they are a fine representation of the game of golf.
“We wanted to get recognition, kind of revitalize our name and put us on the map, and we also wanted to support the ladies. And we did that. We did that with the program, so I think it kind of ran its course and it did well.”
The 54-hole tournament brought high-level players, including numerous former and current LPGA members, to the scenic course.
“I caddied for a year when it was the Nike Tour back in 1991, so I know how good (the Epson Tour) is,” Circling Raven director of golf Chris Runyan said. “To have them out here was just amazing.”
Peiyun Chien, who won the inaugural Circling Raven Championship in 2021, had five top-10 LPGA finishes in 2023 and boasts nearly $1.5 million in career earnings. Lilia Vu, who tied for 12th in 2021, won two majors in 2023, climbed to No. 1 in the world rankings and was named the LPGA Tour Player of the Year. Bailey Tardy, who tied for third in the 2021 CRC, won the Blue Bay LPGA tournament last month.
Chanettee Wannasaen, 19, who lost to Yue Ren in a playoff last August at Circling Raven, won the Portland Classic the following week, becoming the first Monday qualifier to win on the LPGA Tour since 2015. Alexa Pano, who finished third in 2022 at age 18 behind champion Jillian Hollis, won the ISPS Handa World Invitational and had five straight top-25 finishes as an LPGA rookie in 2023.
“They’re just fine athletes,” Penney said. “Just to watch them tee off was amazing. And the pro-ams, to play with them side by side, it improved my game (by) a couple of strokes.”
Players raved about the quality course conditions and the hotel nearby. Fan attendance was somewhat limited by the spacious course layout over 620 acres, distance between holes and numerous environmentally protected areas.
“It’s awesome,” said Tardy, shortly after finishing her final round at the 2021 event. “Being able to stay next to the golf course, I personally really enjoy it. It really feels like we’re at a resort because you wake up and don’t have to get in a car to come here. You can just walk on over.
“The course is in unbelievable shape. I feel like each week, tournament sites are stepping up their game and we’re playing even better-conditioned (courses), but the greens out here, the fairways, everything is just immaculate.”
The inaugural Circling Raven Championship in 2020 was delayed a year due to the COVID pandemic.
“We all enjoyed the tournaments,” Penney said, “and it was great to bring it to the Northwest.”
