Hunting in new jersey.

New Jersey may not be the first place you think of when you are choosing a place to hunt, but the state has so much to offer hunters and outdoors enthusiasts!

New Jersey Terrain and Wildlife Habitat

is comprised of four major land regions: The Piedmont, The Appalachian Ridge and Valley region, The New England Upland, and The Atlantic Coastal Plain. The Piedmont region is only about 20 miles and is made up primarily of rivers and industrial area. Elizabeth, Patterson, Jersey City, and Newark are all cities within this region. The Appalachian Ridge and Valley region is comprised of the Kittatinny Mountains and the Delaware Gap, where the Delaware River cut through the mountains. The New England Upland, also called The Highlands, this area has flat-topped ridges of rock with many beautiful lakes nestled among the ridges. The Atlantic Coastal Plain is the largest in the state and is comprised mainly of pine forests and salt marshes. Atlantic City, Ocean City, and Cape May are all cities within this region. Black bear, wild turkey, whitetail deer, waterfowl, squirrel, rabbit, raccoon, fox, opossum, mink, otter and beaver are all prevalent wildlife in the area.

New Jersey Hunts Available

Whitetail Deer may be hunted with both gun and bow. You may also hunt feral hogs during deer season. The state offers 750,000 acres of public land for deer hunting. Wild Turkey are abundant in the state. In the mid-1800’s, turkeys had disappeared in the state. Turkey were reintroduced in 1977 with 22 birds. The statewide population is now 20-23,000 birds. Rabbits, squirrel, pheasant, quail, coyote and fox are but a few of the small game available to hunt in the state. Black bear is a unique game to hunt, and there are four areas in the state where this game is hunted. Waterfowl and migratory birds are also plentiful in the state. Ducks, geese, brant, crows, woodcock, rail, snipe, coots and moorhen are all popular birds to hunt. One thing that can make a trip truly special is to hire a guide. A guided hunt is something that few people are able to experience. The state has many qualified guides, many of whom can also show you where to find a lodge and an outdoor outfitter.

New Jersey Hunting Regulations

WCO Featured Guides and Outfitters can assist in obtaining the right hunting license for your game of choice, and also help in selecting the best time for success.  Every state has unique laws and regulations, so you will want to check those out thoroughly before you book your trip. You will need a license to hunt each type of game you wish to hunt. There are also seasons for each type of animal, and a specific season in which you may bow hunt. There are also special provisions for non-resident hunters, so you will want to pay particular attention to those laws if you live in another state.

At Muddy Creek Outfitters, you can experience duck hunting in many different ways. You can shoot puddle ducks, diver ducks, and sea ducks. If you are looking for puddle ducks, you will find yourself in flooded timber, farm ponds, or in a “muddy creek” in our surrounding areas. If it is those speedy diver ducks you’re after, we can get you out in the open bay, in a two-man layout boat, stretching from Barnegat Bay to the Great Bay. Looking to spend some shells? Then sea duck hunting is your thing, as we hunt from Barnegat Inlet up to two miles in the ocean for thousands of scoters (surf, common, and white wings) and long tail ducks.

90% of our trips are done over water – private ponds, flooded timbers, bogs, local creeks & rivers – in either a boat or permanent blinds. Wood Ducks, Teal, Mallards, Black Ducks, Pintail & Mergansers.

Our Professional Experienced Guides & Staff

Captain matt – senior guide.

Captain Matt Loveland is the owner and guide of Muddy Creek Outfitters. He grew up chasing waterfowl in Central New Jersey. Captain Matt started Muddy Creek Outfitters in 2010, however little did he know it began back when he was 6 years old, trying to hold the dog steady in the duck blind with his brothers and father. But right there at that moment, he was hooked. Now 17 years later, Matt wakes up every day of waterfowl season and allows you to have that same feeling. During the off-season, Matt enjoys competitive calling competitions, in August of 2012, Matt placed third in the Keystone Regional Duck Calling Competition. Previously, in 2011, he won first place in the New Jersey Open Goose Calling Contest, while in 2010 he placed third. When he is not on a stage calling or out chasing waterfowl, he spends the rest of his time training his retrievers. So give him a call if you really want to go hunting!

Janine Loveland

Janine Loveland grew up always being an outdoorswoman. Her main passion in life is horses, however when she is not working with the horses she enjoys hunting and fishing. You will find Janine working the boats and guiding you on your bow fishing trips.

Hunting In New Jersey

New jersey waterfowl hunting.

Quite possibly the best hunting to be had is for diver ducks in the coastal marshes. Do not be mistaken though, as this is no farm pond hunt for mallards. Hunters typically employ multiple boats, using a high sided duck boat to ferry layout boats to areas of high bird movement. Massive decoy spreads are set out, and hunters hide in their low profile lay out blinds in the middle of the decoys and shoot at passing birds. Be sure to bring several boxes of shells, as fast flying surf scoters are typically the target of these hunts and they are not easy to knock down. Due to the gear and local knowledge-intensive nature of this style of hunting, it is highly recommended that you go with a professional New Jersey hunting guide if you wish to be successful. Apart from this, ducks and geese can still be hunted in the more traditional manner, as a huge percentage of the national black duck and Atlantic Brant population spend the winter in New Jersey’s coastal areas, and good numbers of mallards and wood ducks can be found inland.

New Jersey Deer Hunting

If you prefer to sit in a stand on a crisp November morning over braving cold water in December, you will be interested in New Jersey’s deer hunting. New Jersey is home to over 125,000 whitetails that are spread throughout the state. These deer are capable of growing very large, with deer scoring over 150 inches being put on the ground season after season. On top of this, one of the major benefits of deer hunting in New Jersey is the huge amount of public land available. With over 500,000 acres of state managed land, the opportunities for all game are extremely abundant. Hunters are allowed two of them per season, and with licenses being inexpensive for out-of-state hunters, New Jersey is a great option for those hunters looking to kill a giant or simply fill the freezer.

New Jersey Turkey Hunting

If nothing gets you going like a gobbler sounding off at first light, you won’t want to miss out on a New Jersey turkey hunt. Turkey hunting in New Jersey is unique in that it is treated more like a western big game hunt than a turkey hunt, as hunters must apply for both fall and spring tags. Fall tags are simply allocated on a quota basis, whereas spring tags are a lottery draw. This high stakes draw process ups the ante for hunters, adding to both the excitement and the quality of the hunt. The addition of the turkey permit to a base license is very inexpensive as well, providing a great opportunity for those looking to kill a gobbler and not break the bank. However, if you prefer hunting for large and potentially dangerous game, you will likely be interested in New Jersey black bear hunting.

New Jersey Black Bear Hunting

In the last two decades, both the population and distribution of black bears has exploded in New Jersey. Bears now occupy nearly every corner of the state, giving hunters opportunities to chase them with all manner of techniques. Permits are allocated through a quota basis, and hunters are allowed up to two per season. Being that permits are only a few dollars, hunters can experience a quality bear hunt without the steep travel and license costs of a trip out west.

New Jersey Upland Bird Hunts

If you prefer to hunt something that is less likely to hunt you back, an upland bird hunt may be more your style. New Jersey runs a stocking program for both pheasant and quail throughout the fall hunting season. However, due to the decline of quail numbers in recent years, the season has been temporarily closed. On the bright side, pheasant season is open and there are plenty of birds to go around. To make things even easier, the state publishes both the location and number of species stocked in order to help increase hunter success. Those wishing to chase these birds must purchase an additional pheasant permit, which allows for two birds to be harvested each day.

See the Battleship New Jersey move for the first time in 25 years

F rom prime viewing spots along the Camden waterfront and aboard ships cruising the Delaware River, hundreds of people witnessed history Thursday as the Battleship New Jersey left its home pier for the first time in 25 years to be dry-docked for repairs.

For many veterans who served on the vessel — which holds the distinction of being the most decorated in U.S. Navy history — that moment may be the last time they will ever see the massive ship move.

Before the the USS New Jersey started its departure from the Camden dock at 12:10 p.m. sharp, saluting guns boomed through the air and New Jersey State Police helicopters flew past to commemorate the occasion.

With the help of tugboats fastened with wire cables, it headed south toward Paulsboro for a four-hour trip to begin a maintenance project. It is scheduled to move again to Philadelphia next week for the remainder of the repairs.

“The story of the battleship is also a uniquely New Jersey one. Ultimately, she’s just another in the long line of truly great Jersey girls. She’s not scared to strut her stuff. She’s not taking nothing from nobody. And she doesn’t pump her own gas,” Marshall Spevak, chief executive officer of the Battleship New Jersey museum, said before the ship left the dock.

The celebration in Camden kicked off with speeches from Gov. Phil Murphy and Navy veterans, accompanied by music from a local high school band. Then, the crowd bid farewell to the ship as it left for several months of repairs.

“This is an incredibly powerful day for the state, for this community,” Gov. Phil Murphy told the crowd.

“You think about World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, and Lebanon. And you all know this as well as I do, there’s no battleship in the history of our nation that comes close to the legacy created and lived by the USS New Jersey,” Murphy said.

In his speech, Camden Mayor Vic Carstarphen read a letter that President Joe Biden wrote for the event, highlighting the battleship’s distinction as the longest, fastest and most decorated in naval history.

“The courageous crew members who served on this battleship helped set our nation and the entire world on a safer, stronger and more secure course from fighting the forces of fascism during World War II to supporting the cause of liberty during the Cold War,” the letter from Biden read.

In 2001, the USS New Jersey made Camden its home after being decommissioned and turned into a museum ship. Thursday’s trip marks the first time in over 30 years that the ship is being dry-docked for maintenance work.

The first stop for the battleship will be the Paulsboro Marine Terminal, where the ship will be ballasted, or balanced to prepare for dry docking.

On Wednesday, the vessel will travel to the Philadelphia Navy Yard for the next part of the maintenance project. That is the same Navy yard where it was originally built and launched in 1942, just one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The ship is not moving through the water under its own power, but instead, is being towed and guided by four tugboats.

During the towing, the battleship’s engines will not be on because when the ship was decommissioned for the final time, the Navy covered its engines with preservative grease in case they need to be reactivated for service again, according to museum curator Ryan Szimanski.

And although the force pulling the vessel through the waterfront is enough to spin the propellers, the Navy has also welded brackets in place to keep the propellers stationary and prevent any damage to the ship during the move, officials said.

The repair work on the Battleship New Jersey is overdue. Decommissioned museum ships are required by Navy regulations and guidance to undergo dry-docking every 20 years, officials said.

At the naval shipyard, the USS New Jersey will undergo four major preservation and maintenance projects, including hull repainting, anti-corrosion system maintenance, through-hull opening inspections and aluminum anode replacements.

Before it was moved to Camden, the Navy battleship served for five decades in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon and the Persian Gulf wars.

While it’s dry-docked in Philadelphia, tickets can be purchased for walking tours underneath the ship on Saturdays and Sundays from April through May.

The entire maintenance project should take about two months, according to officials. Once complete, the ship will return home to its dock in Camden where it will once again serve as a museum and a memorial to those who served aboard the battleship.

“As the captain of USS New Jersey in the late 1980′s, I saw firsthand the courageousness and fortitude of the ship and the thousands of sailors who served on her,” said Douglass J. Katz, a vice admiral who was the battleship’s commanding officer from 1987 to 1989.

Hints from Heloise: Transatlantic travel talk and tips on how to dress to feel trim

Heloise KEVIN GEIL

TRAVEL POLITELY

Dear Heloise: My husband and I recently returned from a lovely trip to Europe. For the most part, it was enjoyable, except for a couple of embarrassing moments that were not caused by fellow Americans.

We were in Germany when a man from the United States started yelling and insulting the young man stamping our passports. He brought up World War II and made all sorts of ugly accusations.

Finally, his wife grabbed his arm and told him to be nice. The airport security was called, and things just went downhill from there. As an American, I was appalled by the man’s behavior while he was a guest in another country.

We finished our trip in England, where we went to a very nice restaurant for dinner one evening. A couple of Americans were seated at a table next to us, and when the waiter asked them how they were enjoying their trip, they complained loudly that they hated the food in England.

We were also in a beautifully restored historic building, but they said that there were too many “old things” in England. They didn’t like their trip to Stonehenge either because “it was just a pile of old rocks.” They didn’t see the mystery or the historic value.

Americans are not well-liked by many countries because of attitudes like these. If our trip was a sample of “American politeness,” I can understand why we are not liked. When traveling abroad, it’s always best to be polite and use the manners your mother taught you. -- Abby H., Franklin, Pennsylvania

Abby, I agree with you that politeness is the best policy. When traveling, we should try to appreciate the things we like about a place rather than looking for what lacks. Yes, they are different from the United States, which is why we choose to go to foreign places. Experience and enjoy the culture of a new place! Remember, the people of that country probably love their country just as much as we love ours. -- Heloise

DRESSING WOES

Dear Heloise : I’m only 5 feet, 4 inches tall, and I’m about 15 pounds overweight. While I’m not grossly overweight, when I wear a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, I look like a sack of potatoes tied in the middle. Got any hints for me about dressing slim while I try to work off this extra weight? -- Gloria S., Lima, Ohio

Gloria, there are tricks to make you look slimmer:

  • A boatneck T-shirt usually makes the hips look smaller.
  • A V-neck T-shirt places emphasis on the neck instead of the hips.
  • Wear the same color top and bottoms for a slimmer look.
  • Avoid flowery prints, tent dresses or anything too baggy or too tight.
  • Stretchy fabrics often showcase every bump, so avoid them.
  • Keep jewelry at the neckline or above. Avoid wide belts and shiny fabrics.
  • Vertical stripes are your new best friend! -- Heloise

SMOKE DETECTOR REMINDER

Dear Readers: Make a habit of checking any smoke detectors in your home every Memorial Day or Fourth of July. (Or you can pick any day you want, but just make sure to pick one you’ll always remember.) Make certain that it has working batteries and functions properly. -- Heloise

Reviews (9), excellent hunting experience.

I liked that there was an emphasis on educating me how to hunt. After a few times out, I have a level of confidence that would allow me to go solo if I wanted to.

Hunting is hard. It takes a few times out to be successful. I wouldn’t say that I didn’t like that. It’s part of a larger learning process.

Can’t wait to get out there again

Woman who 'fought for her life' during trip to Turks and Caicos hopes to warn travelers

WABC logo

A woman from New Jersey is hoping to spread awareness to travelers after she was brutally beaten by a man who claimed to be a taxi driver during her nightmare vacation trip to Turks and Caicos.

Scars and bruises are not supposed to be what Suyapa Ramos took home with her from a dream vacation in Turks and Caicos.

"I fought for my life," Ramos said. "It was so scary to feel yourself so close to death."

It comes at a time when the New Jersey mother never felt more alive - dancing by night, and kicking her feet up at the beach by day.

But her memories of the pristine ocean views were all washed away on March 10, the last night of her trip, as she tried to find a taxi from a bar back to her hotel.

"I believe after 10 they don't run, and that was something I found out the hard way," Ramos said. "I trusted someone who said they were a taxi."

Everyone at the bar seemed to know Davidson Martin, she said.

She didn't see any red flags until she said he viciously attacked her in his car, out of nowhere.

"That was the scariest thing I had to encounter to come face to face with evil. Pure evil," she said.

She's now without the ability to see that evil because of the loss of vision in her left eye. She can certainly still hear him.

"While he was beating me, he was growling at me, he was trying to poke my eye out," she said.

Ramos was able to break free.

Her alleged attacker was arrested just two days later, but her story, she says, can't be underestimated.

"It wasn't just a woman, it was a mom, a daughter, a grandmother, a sister, a friend and an American tourist," Ramos said.

The state department urges increased caution when traveling to Turks and Caicos.

The majority of crime happens in Providenciales.

They warn people to not walk alone at night, and don't resist a robbery.

Ramos says Martin took her phone, but it was later found.

She said he did not make sexual advances and doesn't know why he attacked her. She does wish she had traveled in a group.

The suspect is charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm.

His bail is set at $10,000 and is due back in court in May.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help raise money for following Ramos' vicious assault.
