"Normally, I don't feel like writing reviews, but I felt compelled to do it for Athens Insiders. I made the decision to travel to Athens in the summer of 2012 in order to avoid the commotion that was predicted to result from the Queen's jubilee. As usual, my work kept me busy right up to the last minute, so I ran out of time to do anything fun for my week-long trip. I learned about this young group of tour guides for Athens and its vicinity from a friend. I had a wonderful experience. I got in touch with Daphne, who gave me email recommendations for Athens attractions to see, inquired about my preferences for local cuisine, and then devised an itinerary for my trip. In addition to visiting the typical suspects in Athens (Acropolis, etc.), I also chose to travel to Delhi and spend a night at a campground there. And I had a great time, honestly. We visited the attractions when there were few visitors and spent the busiest times outside of Athens rather than being herded around like cattle. I was taken to incredible tiny eateries (the well-known tavernas), marketplaces, and other regional shops."

We even heard from some recent guests "you've got a great property manager! He's very responsive and easy to work with" Another guest liked the apartment so much he wanted to stay an extra day. Easy for us, easy for the guest, and all seamlessly coordinated by Iberian Escapes! Highly recommend for property owners looking for a great manager. Also highly recommend finding one of his listings if you're planning on staying in one of the areas he covers! You won't be disappointed."

• For the truly adventurous, consider tours that include running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain; “mud walking” in Holland; or glacier walking in  Switzerland .
• The “If It’s Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium” rush-rush-through-seven countries-in-a- week bus tours are mostly passé; consider focusing on one or just a few countries at a time.
• Spain-Portugal; Denmark-Sweden-Norway; Czech Republic-Austria-Hungary; and Belgium-Netherlands are among those countries that make for nice regional tours.
• While you can see something of Europe in a week, allowing at least ten days to two weeks for one to three countries is more satisfying.
• Don’t be too concerned with language barriers when booking your tour, since many Europeans now speak English, and your guides can translate when necessary.
• Many Europeans go on vacation for the entire month of August, so visiting in September or October can be ideal; the weather is cooler, too.

Traveling to  Europe  - ETIAS

Europe is implimenting a new travel authorization system that American travelers will need to enter into Europe’s EU and Schengen Zone.  ETIAS, which stands for EU Travel Information and Authorisation System,  will charge a fee and check security credentials for travelers visiting for business, tourism, medical or transit purposes.

ETIAS won’t be required until 2022 but there will be a six month grace period  which means travelers won’t be required to have approval until 2023.

New Update -  Europe  Ban

As of July 1, 2020 the European Union has opened their borders to tourists from 15 different countries.

The reopening plan was based on health criteria, and ultimately officials decided to leave the U.S. off the list. The list of countries allowed to enter Europe will be reviewed every two weeks to keep up with the changing reality of coronavirus outbreaks.

Here is the full list of countries that the European Union has opened up to:

• New Zealand
• South Korea

Where does the language barrier matter?

One of the most fascinating qualities of Europe is the way that countries so close together, with so much interaction, have maintained strong individuality. This manifests in culture, customs, and of course - language. There are 24 official languages in the EU, but countries both in the Union and outside it often have their own official languages.

Because of this, if you are planning a trip around Europe - you will likely run into a situation where you cannot speak the local language. Don’t worry! Most Europeans can speak more than two languages, and in Western Europe, as well as capital cities, this means many Europeans speak English.

Eastern Europe & Russia

One common concern when traveling to Europe is that there is very little English spoken in Eastern Europe -- this is, however, rapidly changing. As the popularity of destinations like Budapest , Prague , Riga , and Krakow continues to boom, many more young people there are becoming fluent in English.

There are, however, several places where English speakers are a little harder to come by. Four countries where English speakers are uncommon include:

Russia (with the exception of St. Petersburg)

Rural Spain

As can be expected, there are also countries with specific regional dialects. This is unlikely to be a problem -- but it is something good to be prepared for! For example, even if you are fluent in French, you might not be able to understand Alsatian (spoken in the Alsace region of region, including the city Strasbourg ) or Catalan (spoken in the southwestern corner of  France).

Flying to Europe

What with the introduction of so many new budget airlines, many travelers are curious about new flight options to, and around, the continent. With fuel costs low, and the value of the dollar on the rise, trips to Europe are cheaper for Americans than ever before. This interest is increased by the fact that many vacation packages do not include flights, and it is still necessary to book your own. 

Airlines like Ryanair travel within the continent very cheaply, but be prepared to forgo checking in, and airplane tray tables, much less built in TV’s. These budget airlines also have stringent and unique restrictions. For example, Ryanair requires that you check in before arriving at the airport, or you will lose your ticket. Another downside to "flying budget" is that customer service can be very difficult to obtain with these no-frills airlines, and cancellations without any recourse are also relatively common.

If you aren't willing to risk a budget airline, there are still ways to find cheap flights. One good tip is to look airlines fly out of cities that serve as a hub (an example in the U.S. would be the Atlanta airport). Whether you are flying for a Europe tour from the USA, or India, flights from these airports are usually lower in price.

We traveled between Japan and Europe during the Covid pandemic

Japanese borders have stayed tightly closed during five months from the first wave of Coronavirus  🦠 ( April to August included), but several long-awaited easing have come to be progressively implemented since early September .

One of them is the possibility for expatriates in Japan who exited the territory to be authorized to come back in the archipelago . It was a huge stumbling block for many foreign residents, who make their life in Japan but who had to temporarily travel abroad, for example in the event of a relative’s death.

Since September 1rst at last, they are free to come back to Japan, in the same way as Japanese citizens who were always permitted to do so. What triggered this article was one of Kanpai’s collaborators’ trip between Japan and France made at the end of September. After 6 months under Covid-19 limitations in Japan, where the outbreak seems efficiently tackled, he was eager to come back in France to reunite with family for a 3-weeks break. Unfortunately, it was also the moment when the second wave hit the largest cities in France.

The resumption of tourism in Japan was announced for a tentative April 2021. As a testimony of the current situation, we decided to give an account of our colleague’s surprising round trip from Japan to France.

👩‍🔬 Before departure: choosing a flight and PCR testing in Japan

We chose Emirates airlines for our travel between Osaka and Paris, mainly for budget reasons (as you may know, 2020 is a difficult year for those working in tourism industry).

PCR testing was not mandatory for direct flights, but Emirates required one to board the plane  ✈️ as there was a stopover. The test must be performed at the earliest 96 hours before takeoff. Getting an appointment in Japan is easy, but it cost about ¥40,000 (~US$261.10), way more expensive than in France, where the ~70€ cost is supported by the welfare system.

To be as precise as possible, the PCR test can be free in Japan – when developing Covid symptoms – but in this case, the tested person cannot obtain the necessary certificate to travel.

The testing procedure is remarkable: in a small room, a seat is placed facing a widely opened window with a fan blowing at maximum strength in the back. In case of any sneeze or cough, every miasma is supposed to be expelled outdoor! The practitioner, clad in protective gear (gown, mask and face shield), thus stays behind the person to take the nasopharyngeal swab.

The result of the test is provided under 24 to 48 hours, and if it is negative, you are good to go!

🛫 The departure day: in Kansai Airport

Kansai Airport in Osaka was almost totally empty, even in the departure hall. The only counter opened during our passage was Emirates’.

There was no waiting line for the check-in, but the process was nonetheless quite long due to a procedure requiring the ground crew to check many items for each passenger . There was no waiting line either at security check.

In the customs  🛂 area, 6 persons of the staff checked that passengers were holding the re-entry permission e-mail delivered by the Japanese Immigration Agency.

Then, the duty-free zone was totally empty! During a 20 minutes’ wait, the only persons we met were cleaning staff or stores’ employees. Besides, most of the shops were closed.

We were the only passengers in the shuttle. Everything was closed in the boarding hall, even the famous Family Mart konbini .

✈️ In the plane and during the stopover

We were about 30 passengers, for fifteen persons flight crew!

In the plane (a Boeing 777), we were placed according to social distancing rules, with a large distance between passengers and the interdiction to change seat . It was in fact a quite comfortable situation, with 7 seats per person, and as many blankets and pillows! It was thus possible to sleep comfortably, lying on the 4 central seats.

Was it related to Covid? The aperitif before the meal was not served.

We made a stopover in Dubai, where our negative PCR test was checked. We had to wear gloves (provided in the plane) to go through the security check .

The second flight (in an A380) was filled with a little more passengers: about fifty, which still allowed for a comfortable and less tiring trip. Except this time, we were asked to fill a form for contact tracing and possible case investigation.

🇫🇷 Landing in France

Surprisingly, only our passport was controlled at the arrival in Charles de Gaulle Airport: French borders agents were not interested at all by the forms filled at our departure airport, nor by our PCR test!

It may be due to the fact that Japan was registered as a green country in the Schengen area’s list since July 1rst.

The French airport was as empty as its Japanese counterpart. Only Terminal 2 was operating, but almost all the lifts and doors remained closed. We were just asked our flight tickets to exit through the main doors.

We then fared through the usual airport maze to reach our transportation method.

👃 The drudgery of PCR test in France

In Paris, and two weeks before returning to Japan, we began to investigate on how to get a PCR test in France before the flight back. However, at the end of September, as the second wave of Covid was steadily rising in Europe, all the hospitals and laboratories in Paris we have contacted by phone or through dedicated apps offered only:

• An appointment at best in a 3-weeks delay , thus too late for our flight;
• Results provided from 5 to 10 days after the test , which was incompatible with the 72 hours before takeoff requirement.

We thus started to search for smaller cities with less delay and an easy access on a one-day trip. The PCR test is free in France, even for non-residents , but it can nonetheless become costly depending on the constraints you have to take it!

Eventually, a friend used their connection with a nurse. However, due to specific circumstances, she could not perform the test herself but got an appointment for us in a laboratory that could comply with our quick result requirement. We could only solve the problem thanks to our connections .

Fortunately, since October 26, Parisian airports can perform rapid antigen testing, with a result in 30 minutes.

🛬 The flight back to Japan

To ensure a smooth boarding, we arrived in Paris airport 3 hours before takeoff. There was no waiting line for check-in, but the process itself was quite long, again to check all our documents:

• The negative PCR test , of course,
• The zairyu card ( Japanese residence card ),
• The permission e-mail for re-entry in Japan delivered by the Embassy,
• The re-entry form attached to the passport when leaving Japan.

The other procedures went by fast, as there were almost no travelers, and we thus arrived in the boarding zone more than 2 hours before departure. The duty-free zone was still quite empty, but there were visibly more passengers in the flight to Dubai than on our first flight (at least double).

We were not asked to wear gloves during the stopover. The boarding happened to be quite long as the staff checked every document and many passengers did not have their PCR test in the format required by immigration procedures.

In the flight Dubai > Osaka, we were 51 passengers, most of them being persons who were just delivered long-term visas: for students, workers, cultural activities, etc.

🇯🇵 At the landing airport in Japan

We waited about fifteen minutes in the plane after landing, while an inspector checked flight documents with the crew (that is what was announced in Japanese). Meanwhile, we were handed the road map (in English) for our next Covid test.

We disembarked and were asked to sit down on folding chairs to wait for the shuttle, and the staff checked that we were holding the 2 required documents… except that only one (the place of quarantine declaration) was given! We thus had to fill another form in a hurry to state where we came from and if we had any symptom.

We boarded the shuttle by small groups and once again were made to sit on folding chairs. Each person was handed an individual barcode and a swab tube for saliva testing . Our documents were checked, and we proceeded one after the other for the saliva test in a booth, with staff members making sure there was enough testing material in the tube.

We were then explained how to quarantine and asked our preferred contact method, either by phone, or by Line, the omnipresent social network in Japan. We were handed additional documents , to fill in even if we already declared the same information in previous forms.

We were then moved to another zone dedicated to our flight, to wait for our barcode number to be displayed on a screen, the signal to go collecting our test result:

• A "negative" sticker was placed on the barcode sheet,
• And a small red paper (a strange choice of color indeed) was given to confirm that we were tested negative.

Then, in the immigration area, each passenger’s documents were meticulously verified . There was no doubt that we were back in Japan! It took 20 minutes to have our case thoroughly checked, including the PCR test taken in France, while we filled (again!) other papers regarding our health…We were made to sit again, before eventually being handed our passport stamped with the permission to enter Japanese territory.

Our baggage has naturally been waiting for us for a long time. The airport staff checked each luggage voucher and handed us the suitcase individually. We went through the customs area without being controlled. It took a total of 2 hours between the landing and the moment we exited the airport .

As it was forbidden to use public transportation and that "Corona-taxi" (taxis equipped especially for airports arrivals during the pandemic) costs are over-expensive, a friend came to collect us by car  🚙 . Without any worry since we had 2 negative PCR tests over the last 3 days!

🕰 The quarantine in Japan

Let us remind that quarantine in Japan is for long-term residents. It does not apply to short term travelers such as businesspeople, nor to tourists starting from the beginning of 2021.

Every day at 10 a.m., we received a message on Line, with always the same 2 questions:

• Do you have fever (a temperature higher than 37,5°C / 99,5°F)? In Japan, the average body temperature is usually lower, around 36°C / 96,8°F.
• Do you have Covid symptoms : cough, pain in the throat, stuffy or runny nose, weariness, difficulty breathing…

If the message on Line was not answered by 2 p.m., we received a phone call.

According to the information provided, we were authorized to go out only if necessary (for example to shop for grocery) or in case of emergency, but always with a sanitary mask  😷 on the face, and never using public transportations or taxi.

The press tours planned for Kanpai have thus been scheduled more than 14 days after our return in Japan.

😶 Kanpai’s thoughts on this travel

In the same vein as our visit of Kyoto and Nara emptied from tourists in spring  🌸 , the flight between Japan and Europe during Covid pandemic was somehow distressing. However, anti-Coronavirus hygiene measures were largely enforced, and we felt that we travelled safely.

It was a surrealistic as well as paradoxical experience to travel with more comfort than usual and on a different pace (except for the travel back). It is however difficult to enjoy this level of comfort when the global crisis so greatly impacted the world, and especially tourism and other related industries (aeronautics, travel agencies, etc.). We almost came to regret overcrowded airports!

De ce tocmai în Japonia?

Când te plimbi mult prin Europa, treptat, se mai pierde un pic din farmec și din emoție. La început totul pare minunat, strălucitor și civilizat, parcă rupt din altă lume. Dar, treptat, ți se urcă binele la cap și o fugă până la Londra sau la Milano nu mai constituie chiar un eveniment.

Am ales Japonia și cu gândul c-o să descoperim un nou Univers, ceva cu totul și cu totul străin, cu care o să ne fie greu să relaționăm și să empatizăm, unde-o să ne confruntăm cu o mulțime de ciudățenii pe care nu le vom putea înțelege în totalitate și că vom pleca de-acolo năuciți.

N-a fost chiar așa. Am descoperit, într-adevăr, un Univers nou, dar în care ne-am simțit rapid în largul nostru, unde am înțeles și acceptat regulile destul de ușor și unde n-a fost zi în care să nu ne mirăm de cultura respectului pentru Celălalt și a muncii duse până la perfecțiune, indiferent de cât de nesemnificativă era. Până și scările de la metrou erau măturate cu simț de răspundere.

Povestea începe pe 29 noiembrie, anul trecut, când, întâmplător, din click în click, am găsit niște bilete de avion atât de ieftine, că nu ne-a lăsat inima să nu le luăm: 300 de euro dus-întors, plecare din Roma, întoarcere în Londra. Shut up and take my money!

Au urmat zece luni de așteptare care nu mai treceau odată! În acest răstimp ne-am refăcut planurile de circa 78 de ori, am citit aproximativ 479 de site-uri și bloguri în care cunoscuți și necunoscuți – români și străini – își povesteau experiențele japoneze, mi-am bătut la cap prietenii care fuseseră acolo pentru tips & tricks, iar cu două săptămâni înainte ajunsesem chiar să știm și unde vom lua prânzul de ziua mea. Like a fooox!

Care ar fi cea mai bună perioadă?

Cred că toată lumea vrea să meargă în Japonia în perioada cireșilor înfloriți (sakura). Doar că atunci e și extrem de aglomerat și, bănuiesc, mult mai scump. Eu am ales început de septembrie ca să-mi prind ziua de naștere acolo și-a fost bine, în ciuda taifunului Jebi care și-a făcut de cap în arhipelagul nipon chiar și cu o 48 de ore înainte de zborul nostru. S-au anulat zboruri, unele orașe au fost grav afectate, și, din păcate, s-a soldat chiar și cu victime.

Când am ajuns noi, însă, nici urmă de taifun: cer senin, nicio picătură de ploaie, niciun copac pus la pământ, nici o clădire avariată. Chiar am avut senzația c-a fost fake news. Apoi ne-am amintit că e, totuși, vorba de neobositul poporul japonez, cunoscut în lumea întreagă ca fiind făcător de minuni, care, probabil a adunat și ultima frunzuliță căzută în urma taifunului, frunzuliță pe care a pus-o într-un ierbar pentru care va construi un templu sau a reciclat-o cu atenție, lângă alte frunzulițe din aceeași clasă, n-a măturat-o ca să-i dea foc ca ultimii barbari.

Părerea mea e că o perioadă mai bună ar fi octombrie. O să fie un pic mai răcoare și, în plus, veți prinde culorile toamnei. Îmi pot doar închipui că e un adevărat spectacol.

Din câte am înțeles, vara e foarte cald, umed și mai și plouă des, iar iarna e frig.

Am observat și noi că-n orașele cu ieșire la mare aerul e umed. Când ieșeam din hotel simțeam că ne bagă cineva la aburi și ne ține la fezandat până seara. Umezeala aia ni se lipea de corp și nu ne eliberam decât după dușul de seară. Partea foarte bună a fost că nu a plouat deloc, deși prognoza anunța precipitații jumătate din ședere.

E important să vă uitați la istoricul meteo, să nu vă treziți în plin sezon de taifunuri, ploi sau frig. O să mergeți enorm pe jos (noi am mers 230 km numai pe jos, în 12 zile), așa că vremea chiar vă poate fi prieten sau dușman.

Cum am ajuns în Japonia?

Cu Aeroflot. În afară de literatură, muzică clasică și balet, nu prea am ce admira la ruși. De-asta am și fost un pic sceptică să zbor cu compania lor aeriană. Noroc cu colegul Ovidiu care m-a liniștit și m-a îndemnat să-mi fac un pustiu de bine să iau biletele alea cât mai repede, că nu mă-ntâlnesc prea des cu o asemenea ofertă.

Am decolat din Roma, Fiumicino, și ne-am întors în Londra, pe Heathrow, de fiecare dată cu o scurtă escală la Moscova (în jur de două ore). Și chiar a fost OK, în pofida scepticismului meu. N-am avut de ce să mă plâng. Personalul amabil, mâncarea surprinzător de bună, nu au avut întârzieri, iar de preț ce să mai zic? Pomană curată! Poate scaunele puteau fi un pic mai confortabile.

Am aterizat pe Narita, cam la o oră de mers cu trenul de capitală. Încă din aeroport am simțit că suntem în Japonia: toată lumea se comporta incredibil de drăguț cu noi (de la cei care ne-au ajutat să ne facem controlul – niște fotografii + amprente – până la fetele de la Starbucks), totul ordonat, bine gândit și teribil de liniște.

Din aeroport e ușor să te orientezi. Iar, dacă nu reușești, poți întreba. Toți sunt dispuși să ajute. Am luat un tren, apoi am schimbat cu metroul și, cam într-o oră jumate de la aterizare, eram deja la hotel.

Cum au fost cazările?

Excepționale! Am stat la trei și patru stele (toate cu note în jur de 9 pe Booking), dar puteam lejer să alegem doar hoteluri de trei stele și șederea noastră ar fi fost atât confortabilă, cât și foarte convenabilă. Hotelurile lor de trei stele arată cam ca cele europene de patru stele, iar prețurile foarte bune: am plătit între 250 și 450 de lei pe noapte. Totul este extrem de curat în cele mai mici detalii. Băile sunt impecabile, ai senzația că ești primul care le folosește și par ordonate de o persoană obsesiv-compulsivă: toate lucrușoarele sunt așezate milimetric.

Camerele nu au fost în niciun caz atât de mici precum se spune, ni s-au părut chiar normale spre mari. Dar poate am avut noi noroc pentru că multă lume se plânge de asta. Paturile, într-adevăr, cam mici: 140-160 de cm, noi fiind obișnuiți cu 180.

Ca regulă generală: foarte-foarte liniște. Dacă în hotelurile din Europa îți mai auzi vecinii mergând sau vorbind pe coridor, noi am avut de multe ori senzația că suntem singurii pe etaj. Nu știu dacă izolația fonică era extrem de bine făcută sau dacă oamenii, odată ajunși în Japonia, încetează să mai fie gălăgioși. Cert e că nu ne-a deranjat nicio altă vietate.

Nu vă cărați după voi cu geluri de duș, pastă de dinți etc. Primiți la hotel tot ce vă trebuie. Eu am fost uimită să văd că am primit inclusiv clamă de prins părul la duș, bețișoare de ureche, burete de baie, perie de păr, periuță de dinți, dischete demachiante sau aparat și spumă de ras, toate de bună calitate.

Personalul de la hoteluri, de o amabilitate ieșită din comun, dar neagasantă. Ne-a fost clar că oamenii ăia sunt naturali, că nu au politețea prefăcută pe care o mai întâlnești prin vestul Europei. Cei de la recepție vorbeau bine engleză, cei de la curățenie sau restaurant nu, dar m-au înțeles când, de exemplu, le-am cerut un pahar cu apă și i-am înțeles când m-au rugat să-mi las papucii la intrarea în onsen. J Încercați să aveți un accent cât mai sovietic, dacă vorbiți ca la Buckingham o să le fie mai greu să vă deslușească.

Unele hoteluri nu au recepție. Va trebui să vă faceți singuri check-in-ul pe baza unor informații primite pe mail cu câteva zile înainte. Nu e nimic complicat, doar aveți grijă să vă verificați mailul.

Mic-dejunul – din experiența noastră, servesc mâncăruri pe care noi nu le consumăm dimineața, printre care orez sau soia, așa că am ales să mergem în cafenele, unde găseam produse excepționale de patiserie. Și-acum îmi lasă gura apă când mă gândesc la ele.

Zona. Orașele sunt, în general, mari. Vă recomand să vă alegeți hoteluri aproape de stații de metrou, gări sau măcar de autobuze, ca să ajungeți ușor oriunde și să nu pierdeți timp prețios pe drumuri.

În Tokyo, noi am stat în apropiere de Asakusa, o zonă unde aveam acces la o stradă acoperită, plină cu restaurante și magazine, chiar lângă metrou și unde am ajuns ușor de la aeroport. În același timp, eram departe de vacarmul orașului. Cu mintea de-acum, însă, cred c-aș sta în apropiere de (nu ÎN) Shinjuku – cartierul nebuniei, cel plin de panouri luminoase, restaurante, cluburi și mulți, mulți foarte mulți oameni. Seara e mișto să te plimbi pe acolo, dar când vrei să dormi, s-ar putea să fie un pic deranjant. Sau, cine știe, poate au niște termopane beton prin care nu răzbate crac de sunet și s-ar putea ca zgomotul să nu fie o problemă. Pe japonezi îi cred în stare de orice.

Ce orașe am văzut?

Itinerarul nostru a arătat așa: o noapte în Roma (am profitat de ocazie ca să revedem un oraș care ne place la nebunie), 4 în Tokyo, 2 în Kyoto, 2 în Hiroshima (de unde am mers și în insula Miyajima), 2 în Osaka (am văzut și Nara), una în Tokyo, la întoarcere, apoi alta la Londra (da, ne-am cam făcut de cap).

Ce e de văzut în fiecare?

În Tokyo sunt o mulțime de lucruri de văzut și de experimentat, așa că ar fi bine să vă faceți planul dinainte. Nu exagerați însă cu lista pentru că o să vedeți că, deși obiectivele par apropiate pe hartă, în practică se vor dovedi foarte departe unele de altele, așa că o să petreceți mult timp în metrou sau pe jos. Noi le-am ales pe alea pe care voiam să le vedem neapărat și-am fost nevoiți să renunțăm la multe. Uitați-vă pe Tripadvisor sau pe Google Trips (instalați-vă aplicația, dacă nu o aveți și descărcați-vă orașele ca să le puteți accesa și offline). Pe noi ne-a ajutat mult.

Am văzut și ne-au plăcut:

• zona de lângă Rainbow Bridge, ne-am întins pe iarbă și-am prins niște apusuri formidabile și liniștite, deși e o zonă de business, cu mulți zgârie-nori
• Shinjuku – o nebunie de cartier, cu panouri luminoase imense unele cu reclame (cu sunet!), muzică tip anime-uri, altele doar cu numele firmelor, cu orice ce ți-ar putea trece prin cap. Aici găsești o mulțime de restaurante foarte bune, de cafenele tematice, de magazine și, în general, cam orice!
• Harajuku – pentru shopping accesibil
• Omotesando – pentru window shopping , dacă nu te cheamă Țiriac. Ai un bulevard întreg plin cu magazine de branduri scumpe (Chanel, Dior, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, adăugați voi ce vă mai vine în minte din gama asta)
• Roppongi Hills – pentru clădiri futuriste
• Yoyogi Park – un parc de pe lângă Shibuya în care găsești, pe lângă răcoare, și arbori seculari, câteva temple și tori (celebrele porți roșii pe care le veți vedea apoi cam peste tot în Japonia)
• Piața de pește Tsukiji – aici se vinde pește en gros, dar găsești și o mulțime de restaurante micuțe, în care poți să mănânci sushi extraordinar. Tot aici are loc, dimineața devreme, (4-5 AM, parcă) licitația pentru ton. N-am fost pentru că picam rupți de oboseală în fiecare seară, dar am auzit că e interesant.
• Parcul Ueno
• Akihabara – tot o zonă cu nebunie, restaurante bune și ieftine, magazine de electronice și electrocasnice și săli imense de jocuri unde găsești, deopotrivă, adolescenți și oameni în toată firea
• Panorama de noapte de la ultimul etaj al clădirii Guvernului Metropolitan (cât vezi cu ochii numai oraș) unde intrarea e gratuită. Mergeți după lăsarea serii pentru o priveliște ca-n filme.
• Sky Tree – cel mai înalt turn din lume, frumos iluminat pe timpul nopții.

Nu ne-a dat pe spate Turnul Tokyo – o imitație cam nereușită a Turnului Eiffel (japonezii au o fixație cu Franța) la care erau doar câțiva amețiți, printre care și noi. Am plecat repede.

Kyoto ni s-a părut mult mai turistic decât Tokyo și total diferit. Fosta capitală a Japoniei a păstrat foarte multe dintre vechile clădiri și monumente din trecut. Am simțit că mai aveam nevoie de cel puțin încă o noapte aici ca să vedem în tihnă tot ce ne doream. Le-am vizitat cam pe fugă și e păcat pentru că ne-au plăcut mult o grămadă de locuri.

Vă sfătuiesc ca aici să stați lângă gară sau măcar lângă o stație de metrou. Deși aici, spre deosebire de celelalte orașe, rețeaua metroului nu e atât de întinsă (e în formă de cruce), poți ajunge mai repede la obiectivele turistice decât cu autobuzele.

• Pădurea de bambus de la Arashiyama – chiar e ceva ce nu am mai văzut în altă parte.
• Parcul cu maimuțe din Arashiyama – mai ales dacă sunteți iubitori de animale. Eu nu sunt și tot mi s-a părut drăguț. În plus, veți avea parte de o vedere panoramică a orașului, ocazie cu care o să vă dați seama că nu e în niciun caz un orășel, ci ditamai metropola.
• Kinkaku-Ji – Pavilionul de Aur – templu budist învelit în foiță de aur. Construit în secolul al XIV-lea, a ars complet la mijlocul secolului trecut din cauza unui călugăr dus cu pluta care a încercat să se sinucidă. Stați liniștiți, suicidul n-a reușit, iar Pavilionul a fost reconstruit ulterior.
• Gion – cartierul unde odinioară locuiau gheișele. E un fel de parc plin cu altare, temple și tot felul de căsuțe. Nu, n-am zărit nicio gheișă pe-acolo. L
• Kiomizu-Dera (Templul Apei Pure), parte din Patrimoniul UNESCO – fondat în 780 e.n, e un templu imens (acum aflat în restaurare), cu o vedere superbă, situat în mijlocul unei păduri de arțar japonez și cireși. Cred că toamna târziu sau în timpul sakurei arată senzațional. Ajungi la el printr-un cartier fermectăor, cu străduțe mici, magazinașe și restaurante tradiționale, astfel că până și drumul e o bucurie în sine.
• Toji – un templu lângă care găsiți celebra pagodă pe care o tot vedeți pe site-urile de turism. Construită prin anii 700, este și ea parte din UNESCO.
• Cărarea filosofului – nu mi-a plăcut cărarea (e doar o alee de-a lungul unui pârâu, străjuită de cireși), ci faptul că ne-a oferit ocazia de-a admira căsuțele de lângă, în care trăiesc localnicii: niște clădiri modeste, când maronii, când turcoaz, dar cochete și îngrijite care mi-au amintit de construcțiile pătrățoase grecești și de grija pentru detalii a olandezilor.
• Inari – sigur le știți și pe astea, sunt miile de porți roșii care formează un tunel. Foarte turistică zona, dar interesantă.

În Hiroshima nu e mare lucru de văzut. În câteva ore poți vedea atât castelul, cât și zona memorială închinată tragediei bombei atomice. E, într-adevăr, impresionant. Pleci răvășit de acolo, oricât de pregătit te-ai duce. Cu atât mai mult cu cât se pune accentul nu pe război sau pe a-i acuza pe aliați, ci pe povestea victimelor. Te pun față-n față cu normalul vieții acestora: unii mergeau la școală, alții se aflau întâmplător în trecere prin oraș, unii își vedeau de treabă prin case. Și brusc cineva aruncă o bombă atomică în mijlocul banalității vieții lor și lasă în urmă sute de mii de morți, unii pe loc, alții din cauza diferitelor forme de cancer pe care le-au dezvoltat. O imensă cicatrice în istorie.

Din Hiroshima în Insula Miyajima se ajunge ușor cu trenul, apoi cu bacul. E o insulă mică, idilică, plină de verdeață, căprioare comunitare, temple, parcuri naturale. Merită să petreceți o zi aici. O să puteți urca pe un munte unde vă veți putea bucura de o priveliște minunată a insulițelor mici din jur. Tot aici găsiți o altă tori, de data asta aflată în apă, și căreia i s-a spus „floating Tori”, deși nu plutește deloc.

Osaka e un Tokyo mai mic, dar la fel de nebun. Castelul din Osaka e spectaculos numai pe dinafară. Înăuntru nu veți întâlni, așa cum sunteți obișnuiți, încăperi păstrate ca-n vremurile străvechi, cu obiecte și explicații, ci un fel de încăperi renovate, cu beton, ciment, sticlă, un muzeu în cadrul căruia afli despre istoria acestui castel. Nu pierdeți nimic dacă nu intrați.

Tot în Osaka am întâlnit un fel de Champs Elysees, un bulevard larg, elegant, cu clădiri frumoase, unele futuriste, altele de inspirație occidentală, plin cu magazine de firmă. Dacă nu te-ai mai simțit de mult sărac, dă o tură!

În centrul orașului, în Dotonbori, găsești firmele pline de imaginație și lumini cu care eram obișnuiți din Tokyo, plus celebrul panou Glico, instalat în 1935.

Am ținut morțiș să mergem și la o piață de pește (și nu numai), Kuromon Ichiba (pe lângă gara Namba) și nu ne-a părut rău: am mâncat crab pe săturate (preferatul nostru), atât tempura, cât și pus pe grătar. Apoi ne-am îndreptat spre Tsutenkaku, un turn care nu ne-a dat pe spate. Zona e însă interesantă.

Din Osaka ajungi într-o oră în Nara, fostă capitală și ea, înainte de Kyoto. Poți merge în Nara și din Kyoto, durează la fel de mult. Aici găsești un parc natural imens, pliiiin cu căprioare comunitare care te urmăresc să le dai de mâncare (noroc găsești biscuiți cu 100 de yeni, ca să scapi de nebune). O mulțime de temple și aici, dintre care amintesc doar două care mi-au plăcut în mod deosebit: Todaiji (e un templu uriaș în care veți găsi cea mai mare statuie din bronz a lui Buddha) și Nigatsudo (cu o frumoasă panoramă a orașului).

Unde am mâncat?

Am mâncat bine peste tot . N-am crezut că eu voi fi vreodată în stare să intru într-un restaurant fără să-l verific pe Tripadvisor, dar în Japonia am făcut asta aproape de fiecare dată. Mâncarea e excepțională peste tot, iar noi chiar suntem foodies amândoi: gătim, ne place să mâncăm bine, suntem dispuși să plătim mai mult pentru ceva bun, apreciem bucătăria italiană, spanoilă, portugheză sau franceză. Dar mâncarea din Japonia ni s-a părut, de departe, cea mai bună. Am mâncat doar bun, foarte bun și extraordinar de bun, la prețuri rezonabile: cam ca-n Italia-Spania.

Nu vă așteptați să dați numai peste mâncăruri dubioase la care să vă uitați cu scepticism: au foarte multe preparate de care a auzit toată lumea și care, repet, sunt excepționale.

Am savurat cea mai bună friptură de vită din viața noastră, ne-am îndopat cu sushi (mâncarea mea preferată), am încercat preparatele lor tradiționale, okonomiaki (un fel de clătită cu tot felul de ingrediente, căutați pe YouTube ca să vă faceți o idee, că nu știu să explic ce naiba e) și tepanaki (simplificând: niște gogoși cu caracatiță tocată înăuntru).

Am mai gustat (mai mult Vladimir decât mine) și niște preparate ciudate: balenă (eu am gustat doar, e bună, dar nu mi-aș comanda niciodată pentru că nu mi se pare OK să omori balenele), mini-caracatiță pe băț cu ou în interior, frigăruie cu vrăbii (oribil, eu nici nu m-am atins pentru că mă deranja ideea de-a prinde vrăbiuța și-a o pune la frigare), cal (nici de ăsta nu m-am putut atinge, mai ales că era și crud).

Culmea e că tot aici am mâncat și cele mai bune salate. Niște frunze (dar nu știu cum se numeau) puternic aromate, unele-ți lăsau un gust de sâmburi de semințe prăjite, altele aveau gust de flori de primăvară. Habar nu am ce puneau înăuntru, dar erau de-li-cioa-se.

Am mers și la restaurante cu sushi la conveier. Bucătarii găteau chiar în fața ta, puneau bucățelele pe câte o farfurioară pe care o așezau apoi pe banda rulantă. Îți alegeai ce-ți plăcea, iar, la final, chelnerița număra farfurioarele din fața ta și, în funcție de culoarea farfurioarei, știa cât trebuie să plătești. J

Singurul capitol la care nu excelează e ciocolata. Am încercat mai multe sortimente din supermarket și toate aveau un gust care-mi aducea aminte de anii 80. De ce, Japonia, de ce?!

Cum a fost transportul?

Fără cusur. Iar asta l-a făcut și scump. Abonamentul la trenurile de mare viteză, pentru o săptămână este în jur de 230 de euro de persoană, dar ai călătorii nelimitate. Atenție, însă: trebuie să ți-l comanzi dinainte de a merge în Japonia. Cumpără-l din timp, altfel riști să plătești mult mai mult cumpărând bilete de acolo. În aeroport, vei declara datele între care vrei să-l folosești, date care rămân bătute în cuie. Deci gândește înțelept! Poate îți închipui că n-o să mai dați alți bani pe transport. Greșit! Puteți folosi abonamentul în interiorul unor orașe pe anumite linii JR (l-am folosit în Kyoto, Hiroshima și Osaka), dar nu peste tot. Aflați la fața locului.

Harta transportului în comun din marile orașe e intimidantă. Au autobuze, metrou și mai multe tipuri de trenuri, iar toate acestea au o grămadă de linii la rândul lor. S-ar putea să se dovedească frustrant uneori, duceți-vă pregătiți psihic. Folosiți hărțile, iar când dați de greu, întrebați oamenii. Sunt mai mult decât dispuși să vă ajute. Pe noi ne-au întrebat ei din proprie inițiativă dacă ne pot ajuta când ne-au văzut nedumeriți cu harta în față. Unii chiar ne-au dus până în locul unde trebuia să ajungem. V-am zis că sunt minunați!

Costul călătoriei cu metroul variază în funcție de zone. Introduci biletul atât la intrarea în stație, cât și la ieșire. În caz că ai cumpărat un bilet mai ieftin decât trebuia, ești îndrumat spre niște automate de „fare adjustment” unde ți se spune câți bani trebuie să mai pui pentru un bilet care să-ți confere ieșirea din stație.

Pe mine m-a frustrat faptul că indicațiile detaliate erau date în japoneză, iar în engleză, destul de succinte. Mi-au venit dracii de câteva ori, dar mai mult pe mine, pe incapacitatea mea de a înțelege, nu pe sistemul lor.

Nu mi s-a părut o țară scumpă. În afară de abonamentul la tren de care ziceam mai sus, totul e accesibil. Tu decizi cât vrei să cheltuiești pentru că alternative ai cu duiumul. Poți mânca și foarte ieftin, și foarte scump, poți sta și la hoteluri foarte ieftine, și foarte scumpe. Când vă faceți bugetul pentru Japonia, gândiți-vă cam cât cheltuiți în medie într-o țară vest-europeană pentru că atât va fi și acolo. În plus, nu există bacșiș. J

Oamenii par din altă specie decât noi. Un fel de Sapiens Sapiens Sapiens. O specie mult evoluată și civilizată, de ajungi să te simți un necioplit. Mă întreb cum se descurcă oamenii ăștia când pleacă din țara lor unde totul este atât de logic și de bine gândit.

Toată lumea mulțumește atât prin cuvinte, cât și dând din cap. E amuzant că rămâi cu ticul ăsta și după ce te întorci de acolo.

Tot ce fac, ei fac la superlativ. Dacă ți se pare că ceva e prost gândit e pentru că nu ți-ai dat tu încă seama cum funcționează! Stai și analizează, nu sări cu înjurături pe analiticul popor nipon.

Oamenii muncesc enorm, prin urmare sunt și epuizați. De multe ori îi vezi dormind în metrou. Ți se face și milă de ei.

Apreciază mult (poate prea mult) drăgălășenia: atât în ton (am auzit o mulțime de femei vorbind cu voci de copii, ca-n desene animate), cât și în tunsori sau vestimentație. Ele sunt foarte feminine (de exemplu, nu le-am văzut purtând blugi boyfriend), micuțe și slăbuțe. Deși aproape toți sunt foarte îngrijiți și curați, poartă cei mai urâți pantofi, deseori cu câteva numere mai mari. Dacă nu sunt încălțați cu adidași, pregătește-te să vezi bărbați cu pantofi cu vârful ascuțit și ușor ridicat în sus dintr-o piele proastă și lucioasă, iar pe ele cu pantofi cu „toculeț” (cât urăsc toculețul!) și cu șosete tip tălpici care ies în afară, nu sunt menite să rămână dracului în pantof, acolo unde le e locul!

Am observat o mulțime de bătrâni care fac joburi ușoare: ba să te ajute în aeroport să-ți faci fotografia și să-ți iei amprentele, ba să te îndrume încotro s-o iei la coborârea din lift dintr-un obiectiv turistic, ba la metrou, să stea de pază într-un loc în care se construiește, ba la intrarea într-o parcare să oprească mașinile atunci când trec pietoni. Nu știu de ce fac asta. Poate ca să rămână activi. Habar nu am.

Reguli de bună purtare

Mulțumești, zâmbești, dai din cap.

Primești sau dai ceva cu ambele mâini, nu cu una singură. Când plătești, banii îi pui într-o tăviță aflată pe tejghea, nu-i dai vâzătorului în mână sau cum te-ar mai tăia pe tine capul.

Nu vorbești la telefon în public. (Sunt chiar videouri explicative în metrou, ca nu cumva să fii bădăran fără să știi.)

NU ai voie să-ți sufli nasul cât timp sunt alte persoane de față. Însă poți să ți-l tragi fără probleme.

Poți să sorbi ramenul.

În anumite restaurante, trebuie să te descalți.

În camera de hotel, te descalți de pantofii de exterior și încalți papucii oferiți. Uneori, pentru baie, ai alți papuci.

Nu te îmbulzești. Când aștepți autobuzul, te așezi la coadă. Primul care a ajuns în stație e primul care urcă în autobuz.

Cât am stat în Japonia?

Noi am stat 12 zile și am văzut – credem noi – suficient. Am mers enorm și pe jos, și cu transportul în comun.

Sigur mai erau locuri frumoase de văzut, dar poate altă dată. Am dat tot ce-am putut. J

Chestii SF:

• WC-urile te pot pune în dificultate. Lângă ele, ai mereu un panou cu multe butoane. Indicațiile sunt, evident, în japoneză. Un buton încălzește colacul. Un buton produce un zgomot care imită trasul continuu al apei, ca nu cumva să te audă vecinul de cabină scoțând zgomote nefirești. Ăsta trebuie să rămână secretul tău! Un buton activează o țeavă care te spală la fund. Grijă mare și aici! Cu trasul apei e un pic mai complicat, că nu știi niciodată de unde o poți face: să fie cumva maneta de lângă rezervor? Să fie cumva pedala aia de jos? Să fie cumva senzorul ăla negru din perete? Sau se va trage apa automat, când te îndepărtezi? Ei, bine, am întâlnit toate variantele și e o surpriză de fiecare dată.
• Coșurile de gunoi se găsesc foarte-foarte rar. Găsești, în schimb, mai des semne cu „Nu arunca gunoiul aici!” sau „Ia gunoiul cu tine acasă!”. Pregătiți-vă să umblați kilometri întregi cu o sticlă de apă goală după voi pentru că nu veți avea unde s-o aruncați. Cu toate astea, străzile sunt și ele foarte-foarte curate, inclusiv în capitală. Și cine a mai pomenit capitală curată? J
• Pe peron sunt indicate locurile unde vei găsi intrările în vagoane, ca să nu aștepți ca fraierul unde nu se va deschide nicio ușă. Oamenii se așază ordonat la coadă și intră în metrou strict în ordinea în care au ajuns.
• La ieșirea dintr-un parc, am găsit chiar niște perii pentru pantofi puse pe un suport pe care scria: „puteți să folosiți aceste perii ca să vă ștergeți pantofii de praf”.
• În unele orașe, trecerile de pietoni sunt late cât zece treceri obișnuite. La câtă lume traversează simultan, chiar e nevoie! În Tokyo, de exemplu, la Shibuya, există celebra trecere de pietoni în diagonală.
• Multă lume citește în metrou, iar cărțile și le păstrează învelite într-o copertă textilă.
• Pe străzi e surprinzător de liniște. Nu sunt ambuteiaje, iar mașinile nu fac zgomot. De claxon nici nu mai vorbesc! Probabil nu sunt prevăzute cu așa ceva.
• Vezi deseori oameni cu măști chirurgicale la gură, semn că sunt bolnavi și nu vor să dea mai departe. Am remarcat chiar și copii de trei ani cu măscuță.
• În toaletele publice nu pute. Pur și simplu nu ți-e scârbă să intri acolo.
• Peste tot miroase frumos. Pe străzi nu simți poluare, iar în gara din Kyoto miroasea a brioșe proaspăt scoase din cuptor.
• Inelul cutiei de bere era un pic ridicat, ca să poți deschide berea fără să-ți rupi unghia.
• Nu găsești gume de mestecat. Am căutat în disperare, iar când am crezut c-am găsit, s-au dovedit a fi caramele. Niște caramele cam scârboase.
• Japonia, țară vulcanică, are foarte multe izvoare termale. Ingeniosul popor japonez a profitat de ocazie și-a construit o mulțime de „băi termale” cu apă din aceste izvoare: unele sunt în natură, altele în hoteluri, la ultimul etaj. Partea bună cu cele din urmă e că te poți bucura de o baie fierbinte sub un cer înstelat, în răcoarea nopții. Partea mai puțin bună e că trebuie să fii complet dezbrăcat. Dacă n-ai o problemă cu a fi gol de față cu alte persoane de același sex cu tine e perfect. Înainte să intri în bazin, trebuie să te speli. Da, de față cu ceilalți participanți. Sunt dușuri prevăzute cu scăunele și tot ce-ți trebuie ca să te igienizezi corespunzător, chiar dacă în văzul tuturor.

Recomand oricui să meargă măcar o dată-n viață în Japonia. Nu atât pentru peisaje – în Europa sunt cu duiumul, chiar mai spectaculoase – cât pentru istorie și, mai ales, pentru oameni. Pentru gradul de civilizație la care au ajuns, pentru seriozitatea extraordinară cu care fac orice muncă și pentru cât de bine te face să te simți fiecare interacțiune cu ei.

In ambele cazuri, o sa primesti niste vouchere pe care le schimbi la casa de bilete in Japonia in “the real thing”, cel putin eu asa am inteles. 🙂

Avantajul site-ului mentionat de tine e ca poti sa iti comanzi si cartela sim cu internet si card Suica, urmand ca ele sa iti vina prin curier, daca nu vrei sa iti bati capul acolo. Dezavantajul e ca toate sunt mai scumpe decat la fata locului. Spor!

Japanese nationals do not normally need a visa for short-term travel to Europe. However, if in any doubt please contact the nearest embassy of the country that you wish to travel to. Stays of over 90 days may require a VISA.

Please note that when travelling to the EU, passports need to be valid for at least 3 months after the date you intend to leave the EU country you are visiting, and they should have been issued within the previous 10 years.

Erasmus+: Study in Europe with an EU scholarship

Erasmus+ is the European Union's programme for education, training, youth and sport for the period 2021 – 2027.  It offers a range of opportunities for higher education students, staff and institutions from around the world.

• Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMDs) are operated by consortia of higher education institutions (HEIs) from the EU and elsewhere in the world. They provide high quality integrated courses and joint or multiple diplomas following study or research at two or more HEIs.

They offer EU-funded scholarships or fellowships to:

• Masters students to study in an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree
• Scholars and guest academics to teach or carry out research as part of an EMJMD

Students from all over the world are eligible to apply.

When and how?

Over 100 Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees will be awarding scholarships for courses starting in the academic year 2022/2023. Applications should be submitted directly to the programmes in the last quarter of 2021 or in early 2022. For more information, please visit the website of the Masters programme that interests you. You can find a list on the EMJM website .

The scholarship covers the costs of taking part in the course, travel and installation, subsistence costs and insurance. Altogether this can amount to up to 16,800 euro per year.

• International Credit Mobility (short-term study in Europe)

To date, some 200 mobility agreements have been signed between Japanese higher education institutions (HEIs) and those in the European Union. Together, these will provide grants for selected Japanese universities to send almost 350 of their students and staff every year to partner universities throughout Europe.

If your university has one or more of these inter-institutional agreements, you will be able to apply to spend part of your degree period (2 to 12 months) at the European university. This mobility is possible at bachelor, master or doctorate level. Contact your university's international office to see where you can go, and what you can study.

Japanese students coming to Europe may receive a monthly contribution to their expenses abroad of between EUR 800 and EUR 900, depending on the cost of living in the host country, plus a travel contribution based on the distance from the sending to the receiving institution.

The European Higher Education Fair (link is external) is held every year in Japan, with over 100 European higher education institutions represented most years.  It is a unique opportunity to meet European university representatives and learn about courses, programmes, and scholarship opportunities.

EHEF 2024 will be held on 15-16 June in Tokyo and Kyoto with online elements. More details will follow on the EHEF website shortly.

Set for take-off in October and with ten years of space travel ahead of it, NASA's new Clipper spacecraft is unveiled in California. The five-billion-dollar probe will travel to Europa, one of Jupiter's dozens of moons, to search for the conditions necessary for life, including liquid water, which scientists believe to be present. The Clipper is expected to be in orbit around Jupiter and Europa in 2031, with its mission lasting until 2034.
