A letter that you write and send with your other Schengen Visa application to the Schengen Embassy or Consulate is known as a "Schengen Visa Cover Letter" (or "Covering Letter").

The letter should give more details about the reason for your vacation and your plans to return to your home country.

The letter serves as your introduction by giving the consular staff at the Embassy/Consulate a quick rundown of your travel history (e.g., travel dates, employment background, etc.).

Why Do I Need A Cover Letter?

Writing a cover letter for Schengen visa is crucial to communicating with the embassy official handling your visa application.

Sometimes you'll have no opportunities to speak to the visa authorities and provide your details. This is due too many embassies employing the VFS services to collect paperwork and deliver the applicant's passport.

Therefore, writing a Schengen visa application cover letter explaining things for you is highly advised because immigration officers base their judgments on the documents you provide.

Why Is A Cover Letter Important?

The Schengen visa application cover letter is crucial to your application since it lets you identify yourself and explain why you travel. Therefore, let me explain why a Cover Letter can determine the outcome of your Schengen Visa application:

Provide Information That Other Documents Can't Provide

Most documents you must present are official records, making it difficult to show your previous travels clearly.

In other words, your visa application cover letter is the only document that can genuinely tell a tale.

Because the Embassy/Consulate officers can grasp who you are and why you need a visa, telling a narrative can be a powerful communication technique.

Speeds Up The Application Process

Each week, hundreds of applications are sent to embassies and consulates.

Sometimes, those in charge of processing a cover letter lack the time and patience to thoroughly examine each visa applicant's file to establish the reason for the trip and the will to return to their country of residency.

This is not to say that they do not thoroughly review your documents. Still, they usually do so to see if they demonstrate consistency.

Therefore, a perfect cover letter will make things easier for them and ensure a faster  Schengen Visa processing time .

The Basics Of A Cover Letter

To create a compelling Schengen Visa cover letter, focus on details and persuasion. Convince Embassy/Consular personnel of your eligibility for the visa, highlighting the purpose of your travel.

In this post, we'll share key tips for a standout Schengen Visa application, ensuring success and faster processing. But first, let's discuss essential content for your Schengen visa cover letter.

The purpose of your visit to the concerned Schengen Country.

The days you intend to arrive and leave the nation (flight reservations).

A thorough schedule of your activities within the Schengen Area.

Evidence that you have the resources to support yourself.

Wherever you intend to stay.

Additional Schengen-member countries you intend to visit (if applicable).

If you have a sponsor for your trip, describe your relationship with them and how they will help you (if applicable).

If you cannot submit any required documents, explain why and what substitute documents you provided.

Any additional information you deem pertinent.

If applying for a double entry or multiple entry visa: the reason why you need to be allowed more than one entry.

You can demonstrate the reason for your journey with the supporting/required documentation.

Important Notes For The Perfect Cover Letter

My previous Schengen Visa application was rejected despite providing all the required details. After numerous emails to the Embassy, I discovered how to make your Schengen Visa Cover Letter flawless.

To avoid lengthy email exchanges, include the following in your cover letter:

Information Proving You're Only Going For Tourism

First, ensure you demonstrate your tourism intent with a detailed travel itinerary. Your visa application cover letter should also include the following :

General tourist attraction reservation tickets (a boat cruise, museum, or festival tickets).

Describe that you are travelling to go sightseeing. Include the names of the places you plan to visit with the exact dates.

Compelling Information That Proves The Reason To Travel Back To The US

You must present proof and include information that shows you plan to travel back to the US (or your home country). Compelling information would include:

An affidavit stating you will return to the US due to business activities.

Copies of your marriage and birth certificates are acceptable proof that you are abandoning your spouse and children in the US.

Copies of your bank statements demonstrating that you have accounts in the US.

A round-trip, fully paid flight to and from the United States.

Showing Evidence Of Property In Your Home Country

Before submitting your cover letter for Schengen visa, ensure you demonstrate your intent to return home to a property or residence in the US. Here's a list of visa application documents that prove your US property ownership:

A copy of the title deed to a property that you own.

Copy of your lease agreement.

A affidavit from a relative or friend stating that you live with them.

Evidence Of Employment In The US

Lastly, include proof of US employment in your Schengen Visa Cover Letter to assure officials of your intention to return to your job, not seek work in the Schengen Area. Here's a list of visa application documents for proof of employment:

A written affidavit by your employer stating you work for them.

An  employment letter .

Bank statements prove you have a monthly income from a company located in the US.

The most crucial part is to include hard copies of these documents when submitting your Schengen Visa application. These documents will be substantial evidence to prove you will be returning to the US.

Other Types Of Visa Letters

Now that we've covered the important information about the cover letter for Schengen tourist visa, I will explain the cover letters for the different types of short-stay visas.

Medical Visa Cover Letter

Your doctor must prepare the visa application cover letter on your behalf if you are visiting a Schengen nation for medical care. Your Schengen Medical Visa Cover Letter must include the following information :

Your diagnosis.

Medical history.

The suggested course of therapy for you in the Schengen nation, including its length.

Business Visa Cover Letter

The first thing you should note about the Schengen business visa cover letter is that your employer writes this letter.

It is more or less the same as the Tourist Visa Cover Letter. Still, here, your employer must state the purpose of your trip and confirm that you are completing business-related duties on their behalf.

Please remember that the Business Visa Cover Letter must be written on your company's letterhead.

Sponsorship Letter

When you (the applicant) won't pay for your travel overseas, you'll need a Schengen visa sponsor letter from the person who will. This letter must be signed by that individual (the sponsor).

It's a crucial document demonstrating you have the resources to support yourself on your journey (for expenses such as accommodation, food, transport, etc.).

Invitation Letter

An invitation letter for a Schengen Visa often states that you have been invited by someone or some other body who lives in the Schengen Area (or abroad).

For instance:

Suppose you want to visit a friend or family who lives in the Schengen Area. In that case, you must show them an invitation letter for a Schengen Visa that the resident (your friend or family member) of the  Schengen Area  prepared.

Where Should I Submit My Cover Letter?

Now that we've covered how you must write a Schengen Visa Cover Letter, you're probably wondering where you must submit your cover letter for visa application. Here's a list of ways you can submit your Schengen Visa Cover Letter:

A Consulate or Embassy of the Schengen nation you are travelling to.

If the country you wish to visit does not have diplomatic representation in your country of residency, contact the Embassy or Consulate of another Schengen Country.

A company that handles visa applications on behalf of the Embassy or Consulate of the Schengen Country you are visiting.

The Most Common Schengen Visa Cover Letter Mistakes

It's crucial that you understand the mistakes people make on their Schengen Visa Cover Letters.

Here is a list of the most common mistakes people make when writing their Schengen Visa Cover Letter:

Not Explaining The Purpose Of Your Trip

Effective logical reasoning is essential alongside your cover letter and Embassy/Consulate interview. Articulate your motivation for visiting the Schengen Area and your commitment to returning home.

When explaining your plans to return, avoid vague statements like, "I will return to my country of residence since I cannot stay in the Schengen Region." Instead, specify a clear date, such as, "I will return to my country on November 28 as my employer allows a maximum of 4 weeks off."

Providing Duplicate Information

Include unique trip details in your cover letter, avoiding redundant information like, "I will be travelling to Norway between November 9, 2022, and November 28, 2022, and I will be staying in Hotel Clarion at 20 Ellehammersvej, Copenhagen," when applying for a tourist visa.

While this information is essential, Embassy/Consulate officers can verify trip specifics through reservations. Maintain a professional tone, but aim to tell a compelling story in your cover letter for visa application.

Your covering letter should include information regarding your trip that is not included in your other documents.

Submitting A Cover Letter With Spelling Mistakes

While Embassy/Consulate officials understand minor language errors, excessive spelling and formatting issues in your cover letter can convey a lack of care and respect for the application process.

Pay meticulous attention to spelling, grammar, capitalization, and structure to appear credible and dedicated. Attending to these details shows you as a well-organized, responsible applicant committed to the visa application process.

Not Presenting A List Of The Required Documents

Specify the document order for your application systematically.

Begin with the universal requirements (visa application form, passport, insurance, etc.), followed by trip-specific documents (hotel and flight reservations, travel itinerary for tourist visas), and finally, documents based on your circumstances (e.g., employment contract, No Objection Certificate (NOC)).

Information Is Not Corresponding With Other Documents

The specifics and justifications in your cover letter for visa application must correspond to the data and supporting documentation in all other documents you submit.

You risk denying the entire application if you make a statement in your letter that conflicts with or is out of alignment with the documentation you submit to the Embassy or Consulate.

Schengen visa requirements for unemployed applicants

Schengen visa requirements for unemployed applicants

The general Schengen visa application process involves meeting various in person requirements and submitting the main visa application form as well as a number of key documents. The specific materials you must submit and other requirements you must meet will depend on the type of Schengen visa you are applying for as well as other factors relating to the nature of your application. If you are currently working, you may be wondering whether there are specific Schengen visa requirements for unemployed applicants. Is there employment verification when applying Schengen visa? What about a confirmation of employment letter? Today’s blog will answer these questions in the context of covering the Schengen visa requirements for unemployed applicants. Learn the requirements for the Schengen visa for those unemployed and married to an EU citizen (including whether they need to submit their spouse’s valid passport in order to apply), and other essential information.

Schengen visa requirements

  • Passport sized photos (2)
  • Basic application form
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Proof of return
  • Proof of travel medical insurance
  • Schengen visa fee (80 EUR for the majority of applicants, for more info on Schengen visa costs click here )
  • Biometric information (photos and fingerprints)
  • Confirmation of employment letter (for applicants with jobs)
  • Please note that applicants will likely be tasked with submitting additional forms, which relate to the specific type of visa they are applying for. For example, someone who is pursuing a Schengen Medical visa will need to submit materials relating to the procedure/care they will receive in the Schengen area.
  • More complete information on Schengen visa requirements is accessible here .

Financial Schengen visa requirements

  • Applicants who are judged not to be able to afford their trip to the Schengen area will be denied a visa to the zone.
  • In addition to paying their Schengen visa fee, applicants must demonstrate that they have enough money to pay for their travel to and from the zone, as well as prove that they have enough money to cover their cost of living once they arrive. Living costs include food, lodging, and travel; these costs vary from country to country, with certain Schengen states being more expensive than others. The Schengen visa officials who are responsible for processing your application are aware of the cost of living in the country (or countries) you are visiting and will be checking to make sure you can afford all of your Schengen-related expenses.
  • Schengen visa applicants must therefore submit personal financial information in order to prove that they can afford their trip.
  • Employed applicants generally submit pay stubs and other information about their salary. Employment verification when applying for Schengen visa is mainly only for applicants who indicate they are employed. If you state that you are employed on your application, you will have to provide evidence of where you work and other information about your job. If you do not have a job, you will be exempt from this requirement.
  • If you don’t have a job, either because you are a student or you are a retiree (or for any other reason) you may be worried about whether you can apply for a Schengen visa. If you don’t have a job, you can still apply for a Schengen visa provided that you present another form of proof (i.e. other than a salary) that you can afford your trip. Therefore, the Schengen visa requirements for unemployed applicants are therefore the same as those for employed applicants: you simply must provide some form of financial information as evidence that you will not run out of money on your journey and stay in the zone.
  • Unemployed applicants can show their bank account information, including savings, (student applicants often submit proof of economic sponsorship information) and any other evidence they have of monies which can go towards their trip.
  • Please note that those who are pursuing a Schengen visa who are unemployed and married to an EU citizen will need to submit their spouse’s valid passport in addition to financial information proving that they can pay for their trip.

non letter from employer for Schengen Visa

Guide: How To Write A Schengen Visa NOC Letter From Employer

What is a schengen visa no objection letter (noc) from employer.

A Schengen Visa “No Objection Certificate (NOC)” (or Letter) from an employer is a letter written by one of the representatives of the company you are working for where it states that the company has no objection towards you taking a specific period off in order to travel to the Schengen Area.

The main purpose of a Schengen Visa NOC Letter from an employer or company is to state that the company you are working for agrees for you to take off the days for which you applied for the Schengen Visa and to assure that you are permitted to travel abroad.

For some Embassies/Consulates, this document is mandatory but others consider it optional. Visa applications that do not contain the No Objection Certificate will not necessarily be rejected by the Embassies/Consulates that do not find it mandatory.

However, we highly recommend you submit it for two reasons:

  • The NOC Letter from your employer increases your chance of approval
  • The NOC Letter can significantly speed up and streamline your Schengen Visa application process

Through the NOC letter for Visa purposes, the company you are working for not only declares that you are allowed to take some days or weeks off, but also assures that you have the necessary funds to support you through your trip/journey (in case you pay for the trip with your own money and you don’t have a sponsor ) and that there is a job that you will be returning to within your country of residence.

The No Objection Certificate must be written by a representative of the company you are working for (such as your manager, your supervisor, the president, or the vice president).

Most of the time, the NOC Letter can be requested via the personnel of the HR department.

You should submit the NOC Letter whether you are planning to travel for tourism, business purposes , or to visit family members.

Please note that there is a slight difference between a NOC letter and a leave approval , meaning that you must first have the permission from the company to take a certain period off ( leave approval ) before requesting the No Objection Certificate from your company.

Therefore, you should first make a leave request (the company can accept or deny your request, or it can propose a different period that you can take time off).

After your leave request has been approved, you can request a NOC Letter from your employer.

Although the NOC Letter is highly important for your Schengen Visa application process , please note that this is not the only document proving that you are employed.

For this reason, you must also submit your employment contract (submitting it is a mandatory requirement) and a Certificate of Employment (the certificate of employment is not mandatory for all the Embassies/Consulates but it is highly recommended to submit it).

To sum up, the main purpose of the NOC Letter is to prove that your employer allows you to travel abroad (the best way to think of it is as though your employer was vouching for you and your credibility to the Embassy/Consulate).

Are There Different Types Of No Objection Letters?

There are two basic types of No Objection letters: for employees (this guide) and students.

Therefore, the No Objection Certificate is extremely important for students as well.

If you are a student, you need to get this certificate from your school or university.

For further details, please feel free to check out our Guide – No Objection Letter for Students . (our article will provide you with complete and detailed answers to all of your questions, a NOC letter sample and template, and much more).

The Importance Of The No Objection Certificate (NOC) For Your Visa Application

Although submitting a NOC Letter from your employer is not mandatory for all the Embassies/Consulates when you apply for a Schengen Visa, this document is extremely important for the following reasons:

  • The consular officer(s) reviewing your application will get additional evidence of your intentions to return to your home country/country of residence (where you have contractual obligations).
  • It is another piece of validation that you are who you say you are (in simple words, the No Objection Letter provides proof that you actually are an employee who has received leave approval to travel to the Schengen Region for tourism or other purposes).
  • A trustworthy company that allows you to get a tourist Visa (or any other type of Visa) and travel abroad provides additional proof that you are an honest person with a clean background (and that you won’t break the laws of the country where you will be traveling).
  • It provides evidence that you have enough funds to support you during your journey (because the Visa officer(s) must ensure that you won’t be a burden to the country you are going to travel to).

How To Get A No Objection Letter (NOC) From Employer

Once your leave of absence is approved by your employer and you know for sure that your company allows you to travel over specific dates, you can request a No Objection Letter from the representatives of the Human Resources Department (or directly from your manager or supervisor – according to the organisation of your company).

You can request a No Objection Letter for employees by sending an email to those responsible for issuing it in which you mention the reasons why you need the certificate.

Below you will find some suggestions on how to write a letter addressed to the HR Department in order to request a No Objection Letter (if you work for a small company you might not need to send a request letter as you can ask for the certificate directly from your manager/supervisor):

  • Use the name of the person you are addressing the letter to. If you work for a big corporation you might not remember the name of the recipient (or maybe you just don’t know it). In this case, you are allowed to start the letter with “To Whom It May Concern” or “Dear Sir/Madam.”
  • Introduce yourself and mention the position you are covering within the company.
  • Explain the reason why you need a No Objection Letter (which is to get a Schengen Visa) and remind the recipient that your leave of absence was already approved and the period when you are going to travel abroad.
  • If you cover all of the travel and living expenses yourself, ask the HR personnel to mention this in the letter.

Here is a sample of how a No Objection Certificate request letter addressed to the Human Resources manager/department should look like:

Sample No Objection Certificate Request Letter

Dear [Name of Human Resources Manager] /Dear Human Resources Department/, Dear Sir/Madam, To Whom It May Concern,

I, [Your Full Name] , would like to visit [Name of the Schengen Country/s] from [ Beginning Date of your Trip] until [ End Date of Your Trip] , as my leave of absence for this period has already been approved.

I would highly appreciate it if you could write a “No Objection Certificate” (NOC) addressed to [Name of the Embassy/Consulate] located at [Address of the Embassy/Consulate] , in order for me to use it for my Schengen Visa Application.”

I would also kindly ask you to mention in the letter that all the expenses during my trip will be covered by myself.

Please feel free to contact me for further inquiries.

Kind regards,

[Your Full Name]

Important : In cases where your company is not familiar with the No Objection Letter procedure, you can download our templates and samples and provide them to those responsible for issuing the Letter, so that they can model from them, use them, and fill them out correctly.

Common Mistakes To Avoid When Writing A Schengen Visa NOC Letter

Before submitting your documents to the Embassy/Consulate, it is highly recommended you double-check what the company representatives have provided, in order to be sure that you are not missing an important piece of information.

Below, you can find a list of common mistakes you must check before you submit the No Objection Certificate for Visa from your employer:

  • Not using a letter headed paper that includes the company’s logo.
  • Your leave dates outlined within the No Objection Certificate do not match your flight bookings or your day-to-day itinerary (you are allowed to leave the company one or two days before travelling as well as coming back to work one or two days after you return to your country of residence, but the difference between your leave dates and your flight bookings must not be significant).
  • The person writing the letter does not provide a signature or contact details (e.g., email address and phone number) at the bottom of the letter – These details are mandatory as the Visa officers might want to contact your company’s representatives for further inquiries.
  • Not highlighting that the travel and living expenses necessary during the trip/journey will be covered by the employee (the Visa applicant) – This must be mentioned if you cover the expenses yourself and you don’t have a sponsor who is funding your trip.
  • Not mentioning in the letter the salary you get (per month or per year).
  • Your passport details mentioned in the No Objection Letter do not match the ones on your passport.
  • Your name on the No Objection Letter does not match your submitted Passport or other documents, such as your hotel bookings or reservations, travel insurance , leave approval letter, etc.

In this article, we will give you some tips and suggestions on how to pass and get your visa. This will include extra documents you might need. 1. Make a Cover Letter

Tips How to Apply for a Tourist Visa if You Are Unemployed or Not Working

If you have no work, one document that can explain your situation is the cover letter . Here, you can enlighten the Embassy as to why you are unemployed; e.g. you are a housewife/husband, you just resigned, or your contract recently ended, and you want to travel, etc.

You can also tell them where your funds are from; your savings, a sponsor, etc. For those who want to take a sabbatical leave to travel, you can show your travel history (stamps and visas). Don’t forget to mention your purpose and that you will surely come back to the Philippines.

2. Prove that you are Financially Capable of Travel

Passbook

Another important thing is your financial capability. Since you don’t have work, you need to show that you have enough funds to travel . You can show your savings and where you got them. So, for example, you’re an OFW, and your contract has just ended, then you can show your previous work contracts. Another, if you have a past business, then you can show your certificates, etc.

However, if you don’t have enough money to travel, then you can check our guide on applying without a bank account . One tip there is getting a sponsor; it may be your family member, relative, or loved one. You’ll need to pass their financial documents as well as your Guarantee or Sponsorship Letter in the format given by the embassy if there is one. Also, a proof of relationship is submitted; e.g. Marriage Certificate , Birth Certificate , or conversations, pictures, etc.

In case your boyfriend or girlfriend is sponsoring you, it’s better if you have already met or been together. The Embassy, like our country’s immigration officers, doesn’t like trouble, and going with a person you don’t know much might get you red-flagged as a person to be likely trafficked. So it’s better if you let your partner visit first or have a good travel history.

3. Have a Proof of Rootedness in the Country

A Lavish Staycation at Hilton Manila Philippines

The key to being approved for a tourist visa even for unemployed applicants is that the embassy is confident that you will come back to your home country. You can show your deep ties to the country if you have properties, children, or pets! Aside from that, you can also show them other sources of income like investments, rental of properties, gigs, etc. Don’t forget a flight ticket back to your home country .

Rent A Flight

You could also prove that you have other activities, like hobbies or clubs, organizations you are a member of. State it in a cover letter and also show some proof. Like for example, “Even though I am unemployed, I am a member of the Liturgy Ministry in our Church. We have monthly assignments, and I will be scheduled to serve a few days after my tour.”

4. Attach Tourism Related Documents

My Luxury Hotel Experience with Hilton Port Moresby

To also demonstrate that you are doing tourism-related activities, you could attach a detailed travel itinerary, hotel bookings, attraction bookings, etc. This will let the Embassy know that your intention is to travel around their country and not to look for a job, especially as you are unemployed. Those bookings will be very helpful.

5. Prepare for your Interview

Tips How to Apply for a Tourist Visa if You Are Unemployed or Not Working

In case you get interviewed before getting a tourist visa, the US, for example, you can practice answering questions. Here’s a list of sample questions and answers for B2 (Tourist) US Visa. You will probably ask “What’s your purpose of traveling?” “ Who is paying for your trip? ” “ Why are you not working? ” Don’t answer too shortly, you need to elaborate your answer. Like for example: “ Why are you not working? ”

I just resigned from my job. – It’s too short, and this will lead to another series of questions, instead, say)

I recently resigned from the company I have been working with for five years. Before looking for another job in the Philippines, I think I deserve a break. So, I’ve decided to travel to the US using the savings I got from working. – Unlike the first one, this explains much more about your situation and the interviewer can go from there.

6. Gather complete documents

Philippine Immigration Tips for Unemployed and Homebased Online Worker or Freelancer

Check the requirements for the Tourist Visa Application. In case you don’t have Bank Statements or Bank Certificate asked, as per number 2, have a sponsor or proof of financial capacity . If you are also missing things, use your cover letter as to why you don’t have those. You can also attach numbers 1 to 4, so that your application is strong, meaning there’s not much loopholes or reasons as to why you will be denied.

Make sure that the rest of your documents are also valid, like for example your passport’s validity is at least 6 months valid from your departure. Your application form is also complete, and the details are the same as your supporting documents, etc.

Tips How to Apply for a Tourist Visa if You Are Unemployed or Not Working

Pictures, conversations, tickets, bookings together.

Hi! I am planning to go on a trip to Australia as a tourist kaso my income is about ₱15,000 a month. Would that affect my application even if I show enough funds to cover for my expense via bank deposits. I do plant to fund the travel myself and would be taking a leave from work. I have read in a blog that a person who has ₱25,000 monthly income got rejected coz his income is too low that is why I am a bit concerned.

I’m not sure if Australia is open right now. There might be other factors with his visa rejection – finances, proof of ties, etc.

Good afternoon , wala po akong work sa ngayon pero may boyfriend po ako from Vienna, Austria 4 years na po kami. Magkikita sana kami nung April 2020 kaso nagka lockdown.

That’s a bit hard po if “kunin” yung term mo, as it implies you will live there and work there po; and that’s a red flag pag-UK. It’s better to tour nalang for a few days and have strong proof of ties in the Philippines . Or if gusto mo mag-work doon, apply for a job muna and get hired.

  • Address the recipient with a formal salutation. For example, “Dear/Hello (name of the recipient).” If you do not know the recipient’s name, you can refer to them as sir/madam.
  • The next step is to state why you are writing the letter.
  • Make a brief statement about your personal life. I.e, your status, and work-life among others.
  • List the documents you have attached.
  • Conclude your letter with a forward-looking statement. For example, “Kindly do a favor, and approve my application for an Irish passport. I shall be thankful to you for your kindness.”

Required documents for your Schengen visa

General Information

Required documents and first steps, processing time, complaints procedure.

A Schengen visa entitles the holder to an accumulated stay of up to 90 days within a period of six months and is valid for Germany, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland (Schengen Area).

Please submit your application for a Schengen Visa to the representative of the country which is your main destination - considering length and purpose of your intended stay. If no such main destination can be ascertained, please contact the representative of the country of your first entry into the Schengen Area.

The German Embassy in Dar Es Salaam have outsourced the application process for Schengen visas to the external service provider TLScontact who will guide you through the application process.

Requirements for the issue of short-term visas (Schengen visas)

The basis for issuing visas for transit through or for short-term stays in the Schengen area of a maximum of 90 days per 6-month period is European law (Visa Code).

There is no entitlement to the issue of a Schengen visa.

The existence of the following visa requirements must be positively determined by the diplomatic mission or consular post for each individual visa applicant:

  • Plausibility and comprehensibility of the purpose of the journey in Germany
  • Financing of living and travelling expenses from own assets or income
  • Willingness of the visa holder to leave the Schengen area before the visa expires,
  • Presentation of travel health insurance valid for the entire Schengen area and for the entire duration of the stay with a minimum cover of 30,000 euros.

If it is not possible to provide proof of own financing, proof of financing can be provided by a third party resident in Germany by submitting a formal declaration of commitment in accordance with §§ 66, 68 of the Residence Act . As a rule, the foreigners authority at the place of residence of the person making the commitment is responsible for accepting such a declaration.

The increased issuance of visas that authorise multiple short stays in the Schengen area within a long-term period of validity can avoid the frequent reapplication of visas. This option can particularly benefit people who need to travel frequently for professional or private reasons and who have proven their reliability through the legal use of previous visas .

IMPORTANT: Duly completed application forms may be submitted six months prior to your intended travel date. It may take an average time of 15 days to process your Schengen visa application.

Processing time differs from case to case. Therefore, in order to avoid delay, it is advisable to apply well in advance of the actual travel dates. This will help ensuring a smooth organization of your trip.

If your travel date is imminent or lies within two weeks of your application date, please check if you can postpone your trip. In general, neither the German Mission nor the Service Provider is able to expedite the process.

Only documents in German or English are accepted - otherwise, a translation needs to be provided or the document will be ignored.

The German Embassy in Dar Es Salaam is only the competent authority should you have your permanent residence in Tanzania. Otherwise, your application will be denied and returned.

Check out the VISA NAVIGATOR

If you need basic general information or in-depth guidance about the types of shorterm visa for Germany as well as the surrounding process, then we recommend using our VISA NAVIGATOR first.

After having accessed the information compiled in the VISA NAVIGATOR, please continue with the country-specific information for your application on this Website.
