MINNEAPOLIS — Among his many athletic attributes, Shohei Ohtani might be the fastest runner on the Dodgers this season.

Paired with the fact that he won’t be expending energy as a pitcher, the expectation is Ohtani will run the bases more aggressively this season. Third base coach Dino Ebel took that to heart Wednesday afternoon.

On first with two outs in the seventh inning against the Minnesota Twins, Ohtani represented the tying run when Freddie Freeman lashed a double into the right field corner. Ebel waved Ohtani home and the long-striding DH executed a pop-up slide at the plate, spreading his arms wide in a safe sign.

Home plate umpire Marvin Hudson agreed. But replay review showed Twins catcher Christian Vazquez’s diving tag after an excellent relay throw by shortstop Carlos Correa caught Ohtani’s foot just before it reached home plate. The call was overturned and the Dodgers went on to lose, 3-2.

“Shohei (on base), two outs, Freddie hits a ball down in the corner, it kind of gives a little bobble down there (against the wall), down the line,” Ebel said. “Two outs, late in the game like that, you gotta send him.

“Shohei is fast. Just the situation, game, scoreboard – we’re down a run, two outs – I thought it was the right play. And it was bang-bang. You guys saw it. And hey, Correa made a great throw at home. So tip your hat.”

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts agreed it was the right decision to try and take advantage of Ohtani’s speed on the bases.

“I don’t think he would’ve sent him if it wasn’t Shohei. I think just the sheer foot speed,” Roberts said. “It was a great baseball play (by the Twins). He’s going to start running more as far as stealing, but on that play for me, with two outs, you’ve got to make them make the play.”

The Twins did and avoided a sweep by the Dodgers. The loss ended the Dodgers’ first stateside road trip of the season having split the six games.

The trip started with Bobby Miller getting roughed up on his birthday at Wrigley Field for five runs in just 1⅔ innings. It ended with a laborious four-inning effort from Miller at Target Field.

Miller gave up a home run to the first batter he faced, Edouard Julien, and had baserunners in each of those four innings, giving up five hits and walking three. A pair of double plays helped him avoid more damage than the two runs he allowed.

“Not super happy about the outing,” Miller said. “With only two runs, given the amount of baserunners I had and amount of times I fell behind in the count, that gives me more confidence because I could easily have given in and made it a four- or five-run game.

“My delivery wasn’t at its best. But like I said, I could easily have crashed out there and made it a four- or five-run game. But just trying to do my best to give my team a chance to win.”

The Dodgers scored in the first inning on an RBI double by Teoscar Hernandez then tied it in the fourth on a solo home run by Max Muncy.

But Alex Vesia gave up a second home run to Julien on his second pitch in the fifth and the Twins made the one-run lead stand up over the final four innings – with the help of replay.

“I’m the hardest person on myself. So I’ve been going over different mechanics and pitches and stuff,” Vesia said. “Today I missed my spot, and he got me.”

In seven outings this season, Vesia has faced 30 batters. Ten of them have reached base – six walks, one hit batter and three hits (including home runs in each of the past two games).

“It was close to him, it was thigh-high – a good pitch for him to hit. To his credit, obviously the kid (Julien) had a big day,” Roberts said. “But you’ve got to be able to mix and match your sequence. You just can’t pitch with just your fastball. If you look at this outing, they didn’t have to honor the breaking ball. So if you can’t make them honor your breaking ball, they can sell out and that’s clearly what they were doing.”

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Thinking of taking a last-minute drive to see the eclipse here's what to know.

NASA says that roughly 31.6 million people live in the path of this year's total solar eclipse, and a little under half of the U.S. population lives within 200 miles driving distance of the path of totality .

That could mean many millions of Americans will hit the road to get a better view on April 8. If you're still pondering whether or not you want to make the journey, here's what to consider.

Have some destinations in mind, and check the weather and cloud cover forecasts in advance

It's a good idea to scout out one or more locations within driving distance, so that you have some flexibility if traffic or weather is threatening your plans, says Jonathan Upchurch, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at Arizona State University who has studied travel around solar eclipses.

There are several interactive tools that show the path of totality, including Eclipse2024.org and the National Solar Observatory . You can use them to figure out what sites might work best for you.

In terms of weather, check not just the weather forecast, but also the cloud cover forecast. Some websites, such as Windy.com will predict cloud cover ahead of time, giving you a sense of whether you'll actually be able to see the eclipse in all its glory.

During the total solar eclipse in 2017, Upchurch says he chose to go to Idaho "because there were some great chances of having sunny skies, and I had the opportunity to be nimble and relocate if I wanted to."

Before driving into the path of totality, make sure your gas tank is full and that you've got everything you need

During the last total solar eclipse in 2017, it's estimated some 5 million people took to the roads, and those numbers will potentially be much higher this year.

Given all that, Upchurch says it's important to make sure you're taking what you need into the path of totality. You should make sure your car is gassed or charged up, and that you have plenty of snacks and water with you in case you get stranded for a while, especially when trying to leave.

Simple tips to safely photograph the eclipse with your cellphone.

Also don't forget to bring eclipse glasses, which must be worn anytime you're looking at the sun, except for the few minutes when it is completely blocked by the moon.

Some state emergency planners also recommend bringing a paper map or road atlas in case cellular networks become overloaded with visitors seeking directions from their phones.

Arrive early and stay late

Once you figure out where you're going to watch the eclipse, and you've got your supplies, try to get there early. Although traffic is likely to be heavier than normal on the morning of eclipse day, it still should be possible to reach many destinations without too much hassle, says Upchurch.

"Leaving is definitely going to be more of a problem," he says. As the eclipse concludes, people will take to the roads all at once to try and get home as fast as they can. In 2017, that led to traffic jams that lasted many hours in some areas. If possible, Upchurch says, people should stay put for a while to try and avoid the worst of the post-eclipse rush, which in 2017 stretched even into the following day in some parts of the country.

And one more thing: If you do find yourself on the move near the time of the eclipse, state officials stress that you should not simply pull over to the side of the road or highway you're driving on. It's important to be parked legally and safely at the moment of totality.

If you're already in the path of totality: Relax and enjoy!

Several major metropolitan areas including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo are already inside the path of totality, so there's no need to seek a better view, Upchurch says. You'll probably have the most fun simply staying where you are.

If you're on the edge of the path of totality, however, you might consider making a short trip to get closer to the center of the eclipse's path.

"If you're within about 40 miles of the center line, you'll have two-and-a-half minutes or more" of complete totality, Upchurch says. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth making the trip to a more central location.

Despite studying the potential hassles of traveling extensively, Upchurch says he's still looking forward to seeing the 2024 eclipse, which he plans to watch from Texas.

"Totality is absolutely spectacular," he says. "If you have a chance to witness it, I would do it."

Five Georgia students rescue a woman and her two children from drowning car

The Kappa Alpha Theta members jumped into action to save Cori Craft and her two sons after their SUV veered off into a creek

With her two sons accompanying her, Cori Craft had just accidentally driven her SUV into a creek in rural Georgia , and she couldn’t find her phone to summon help as the car rapidly sank.

Thoughts that she and her family could soon drown started to flood her mind. But then she heard a voice call out and ask if she was OK. Her reply that she was not OK was the only thing five college sorority members needed to hear to work together to pull Craft and her boys out – and then resuscitate one of the children by performing CPR on him.

“Without them stopping, I would not have my youngest here,” Craft told ABC News in a remarkably dramatic interview published Wednesday. “I know I would not have been able to get to him in time.”

Craft’s comments to the US news outlet provided the most complete account yet of what authorities have separately exalted as life-saving bravery displayed by University of Georgia students Molly McCollum, Jane McArdle, Eleanor Cart, Clarke Jones and Kaitlyn Iannace on 15 March.

As the five Kappa Alpha Theta sorors recounted to ABC, they were on a road trip of about four hours from their school in Athens to Savannah to celebrate St Patrick’s Day weekend when they detoured through a rural part of the state to stop for lunch on cheese biscuits.

That’s when McCollum said “a spark of white – a little cloud of dust” in the corner of their collective vision caught their attention.

The sound of “a big old crash” soon complemented the strange sight, McCollum recalled, and once assured that they weren’t imagining things, the group decided to pull their car over.

As Jones said, “that’s when we saw the car in the water”.

Craft said she had veered off the road and into the creek there after losing control of her SUV – with her two young sons in the back – while driving through the community of Sardis. Not only was she unable to find her phone as the emergency escalated, but she also couldn’t even see where her glasses were, she said.

“I was thinking … ‘I don’t know how I’m going to call for help,’” Craft said. “And then I just heard them over on the bank, they shouted [asking] if I was OK. And I’m like, ‘No, my kids are in the car.’”

As a screaming Craft squeezed her way out of the SUV through a broken sunroof, the traveling Thetas dialed 911, but they didn’t wait for first responders to arrive. They hopped into the water, aided Craft as she opened one of the doors of the sideways SUV and retrieved the older of her sons.

But Craft’s younger boy – aged four – remained buckled in, completely under water and trapped.

McCollum reported spending up to five minutes struggling with McArdle, Cart, Jones and Iannace to find a way to rescue Craft’s younger boy. They eventually managed to lift him out of the car – yet at that point, a frightening scene greeted them.

The boy’s “lips [were] completely blue”, Iannace said to ABC. “Like his eyes were closed – he was not breathing.”

Luckily for the group gathered in the creek, Jones had previously worked as a lifeguard. She remembered the CPR training she received as part of that job and began administering it to the boy, unsure if it would even make a difference.

“This is the one thing I know how to do that I can help,” Jones said she thought to herself. “And so I’m just going to give it my best try.”

Craft became afraid that her younger child had died. However, suddenly, he began breathing again.

Jones and her friends had saved him. That realization prompted his mother and his rescuers to burst into elated tears.

Local sheriff’s office deputies soon released a statement calling the sorority sisters “amazing”.

“The quick thinking and bravery of these women is absolutely admirable,” said the statement from the agency, which subsequently made the university students honorary deputies. “We are grateful you were in the right place at the right time.”

The Sardis police department issued its own statement declaring that “these five young ladies were the primary factor” everyone in Craft’s SUV emerged from the crash alive.

“The term hero gets said about sports stars and others,” the Sardis police statement added. “But these five are true heroes.”

None of the Thetas seemed all that comfortable embracing the label of hero – or, as ABC dubbed them, “the fearless five”.

“It’s more about … [having] a mindset of altruism and just like searching for [anyone] who needs help in the world around you,” McCollum said in the interview which aired on Good Morning America.

McArdle said: “I think the mom was so frantic that, like, I don’t know – I feel like I didn’t have a choice but to help.”
