Welcome to The 3rd AsiaEvo Conference

For the last three years, the world’s population has been struggling and adapting to the ever evolving SARS‐CoV‐2 virus. As a consequence of measures to slow transmission, the previous AsiaEvo Conference was hosted remotely and on-line. Most people in the world are now returning to a sense of normality, and in light of that we are pleased to host the 3rd AsiaEvo Conference as an in-person event in Singapore, December 16-18, 2023.

A brief history of AsiaEvo

In 2016, at the European Evo-Devo conference in Uppsala, some researchers from east Asia had an informal discussion about the idea to organize a biennial international evolutionary research conference located in Asia. The purpose of this conference was 1) to offer a platform for evolutionary researchers in Asian countries to present and discuss their work in the widest possible context, 2) to facilitate international collaboration on the cross-disciplinary research and education on evolutionary biology in Asia and beyond, 3) to enhance education of evolutionary thinking across the Asian countries, 4) to attract more talented students to join the field of evolutionary study. After the small discussion in Uppsala, the proposal was quickly spread out and received broad support from colleagues in Asia and the rest of the world. Particularly, China National Genebank, Center for Excellence in Animal Evolution and Genetics at Chinese Academy of Sciences, Society of Evolutionary Studies and Association for Propagation of the Knowledge of Genetics in Japan have provided generous support to the first AsiaEvo conference which was successfully organized in Shenzhen in 2018. During the meeting, we discussed that the second conference would be organized in Japan under the leadership of Professor Koichiro Tamura at Tokyo Metropolitan University. Encouraged by the success of the previous conference and the continuous and enthusiastic support from the colleagues from world-wide, we truly believe the evolutionary biology will have a bright future in Asia.

New-look Asia announce Heat of The Moment US tour

Geoff Downes joined by John Mitchell, Virgil Donati and Harry Whitley in new Asia line-up

Keyboard player Geoff Downes has unveiled a brand new Asia line-up featuring John Mitchell  ( It Bites ,  Lonely Robot ,  Kino ,  Frost*  and more), Planet X drummer Virgil Donati and Harry Whitley, who performed with the Asia line-up at last year's John Wetton An Extraordinary Life tribute show .

"And so it was that the John Wetton tribute last August really reminded me how much Asia’s music belongs on the stage," says Downes. "The response to it all was literally…spine-chilling. We were accompanied by some amazing musicians on the night, and I’m delighted that both John Mitchell and Harry Whitley, from the Asia segment, will be joining me for this tour. It promises to be a great evening of music and furthers the legacy of all our founder members, in particular the incredible contributions of John Wetton to the Asia canon.

“With the addition of Virgil Donati and John Mitchell, two of the finest musicians in the world in their respective classes, this is almost going full circle bearing in mind their previous close collaborations with John. Completing this circle is also the amazing Harry Whitley who absolutely floored the audience with his incredible vocal interpretation of the Asia songs that John W and I so lovingly wrote over the years."

The new-look band have announced a North American tour with prog legends Focus and Curved Air , and Martin Turner, with noted album cover artist Roger Dean acting as MC.

"I am convinced that John (Wetton’s) spirit is with us as we set out on this new adventure," adds Downes. "After all, it is the Year of the Dragon - just as it was in 1982, when we released our first Asia album. It’s as though it was meant to be. It is going to be both a very emotional and exciting tour, bringing back that music in front of our dedicated fans and newcomers alike. Looking forward to see you there, my friends – bring it on!"
