Ford Focus Owners Manual: Trip computer

Registers the total mileage of the vehicle.

Registers the mileage of individual journeys.

Indicates the approximate distance the vehicle will travel on the fuel remaining in the tank. Changes in driving pattern may cause the value to vary.

Indicates the current average fuel consumption.

Indicates the average fuel consumption since the function was last reset.

Indicates the average speed calculated since the function was last reset.

Shows the outside air temperature.

Recalibrates the system to the actual pressure of the tyres. See Tyre pressure monitoring system.

Enters the main menu. See General information.

The trip computer includes the following information displays:

Turn the rotary control to scroll through the trip computer displays.

To reset a particular display:

6. Press and hold the SET/RESET button.

How do I use the trip computer in my Ford?

The trip computer in your vehicle keeps track of the time and distance you have traveled. The trip computer has several menu options that you can access by using the five-way controls on your steering wheel. Press down, up, left, or OK to scroll through the options, which include: 

• Distance to Empty: Indicates the approximate distance your vehicle can travel before running out of fuel. 
• Trip Odometer: Registers the distance you have traveled on an individual trip.
• Trip Timer: Keeps track of how long each trip takes. The timer stops when you turn your vehicle off and restarts when you restart your vehicle.
• Average Fuel: Shows the average fuel economy for a given trip.
• Outside Temperature: Shows the outside air temperature.
• Digital Odometer: Tracks the overall distance you have traveled.
• All Values: Shows the Distance to Empty, Trip Odometer, Trip Timer, and Average Fuel. 

Using Your Trip Computer

Setting your trip odometer to track an individual trip.

• Scroll to either the Trip Odometer, Trip Timer, or Average Fuel screen using the five-way steering wheel controls.
• Press and hold the OK button until you see the status bar loading. When the status bar fills in all the way, your computer will be reset.

Resetting All Trip Computers

• Scroll to the All Values screen using the five-way steering wheel controls.
• Press and hold OK until you see that the computer is reset to zero.

Changing the Display Information

• Go to Settings from the main menu.
• Measure Unit or Distance depending on your vehicle
• Temperature

Note: Some vehicles may come with an additional trip computer, Trip 2. It has the same features as Trip 1 and makes keeping track of multiple trips easier.

I've heard about mini-trip computers that tell you things like your fuel economy. The Ford Granada had a nice trip computer. Anyone know where to get a trip computer for the Focus? ------------------ Stephen M Proud 2000 Infa-Red Focus SE Sport

My Ford Maintnance Manual CD (woohoo, got it today) says that the trip computer does the folowing funcions The trip computer module has the following functions: —Low level of washer fluid warning —Ice warning —Outside temperature display in ºC or ºF —Average fuel consumption display in liters per 100 kms or mpg —Display of current fuel consumption in liters per 100 km or MPG (miles per gallon) —Display of distance remaining in km or m —Display of average speed in km/h or mph btw. In the european cars you can turn on one side of lights at a time. Like have only your left parking lights on.  

hmm...very interesting...wonder how much all the parts would cost.

From what I remember, if you check out the connector that goes to the above turn signal stalk, on the Euro Focus there is a black wire with a yellow stripe going to pin 10 I believe. This is the wire that works the 'INFO' button on the end of the stalk.  

I have a 04 focus zetec. I want to install a trip computer, but will the zetec model have the sensors and all I have to do is install the stalk and display or will I have to get all of the sensors as well? Thanks  

I thought i read somewhere that if you hold down the trip reset button while turning the car on some stuff like that shows up where the odometer is?  

Just get a ScanGauge II, it's what I use. Got it on FF for $100 shipped, but I think they're about $160 new.

You need to swap ECUs to get the trip computer to work fully, per my previous research into it. Some functions may work, like the ice sensor, external temperature, and washer fluid sensor; but you need the appropriate parts for them, as well. The fuel mileage functions won't work without the correct ECU.  

I have a full kit for sale to fit into a MK1 -1.5 focus providing you have the wiring in place. PM if your interested.  

3 pages deep things seem to have gotten a little more complicated than what i read on the first post from the OP.. and to be honest i didn't read all 3 pages but.. google Scan Gauge 2 I have one; it wasn't originaly purpoused for my fo fo but i sold the vehicle i was using it on and found it works in the focus. it has some trip stuff built in like miles on the tank cost of the tank miles per gallon miles till empty engine run time current/tank. lots of crazy stuff... not to mention its a code reader and adds all kinds of gauges to your car.

How to reset the trip, distance, time, and average fuel consumption values on the trip computer on the Ford Focus.

• Using the directional pad on the steering wheel, toggle the display to the value you want to clear.
• Press and hold the “ OK ” button for about 3 seconds. It will reset the counters.

Is it possible to change out the Trip computer screen in the 2012 SE for the Titanium one?  

Does this still give you average MPG or can it give you "on the fly" MPG?  

I'm not sure if anyone has tried this yet, but this TSB: 6277 - 2012-2013 Focus - Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Inoperative at Start-Up - Built On Or Before 2/6/2013 See TSB: 13-06-27 for details. 13-06-27 Refers to the screen on the dash. Ford doesn't have to verify that it sometimes doesn't start up, you can just tell them you have been having problems with it and they will re-flash it. Not sure if they flash it with the old software, or it gets the new one with the quad display.  

Thanks for posting this TSB. I was going to give my dealer a call and ask them about getting a flash to the newest software. Knowing this should make it easier to explain what I'm after. Also I have a TSB to fall back on.

OOOO... i hope this works! There is hope for my 2012 still!  

My quad display (2013 job 2) shows avg mpg, not instant. I am not aware there is any option to change it.  

I may be misreading the TSB but it looks like this would only affect cars with remote starters? Hopefully I'm wrong.  

What line makes you think this? The TSB I am reading says nothing about remote start, or any feature for that matter.  

The calibration files for the IDS unit can be found here: http://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdirs/wds/PCMReprogram/DSFM_PCMReprogram.asp?swproduct=IDS Unfortunately, I cannot find any release notes or anything that would tell what the latest calibration changes were for the IPC. Also, I am not so sure that the "calibration" in Ford speak is the same as the firmware for the display.  

It even says "with additional content for European market". Ugh, Ford.

The TSB states 2012-2013 built before 2/13. I've got a 2012 SE, but my trip computer screen is not anywhere near as wide as the one I see in the pictures of this thread. I feel that the screen in those pictures has color as well, mine does not - as far as I can tell. Can anyone verify if this does anything for my style trip computer?  

That's the small center display. I doubt the TSB will get you the 4-panel screen. I'm not sure if it even applies to your car. (I think the S's and SE's without SYNC got the small IP display and SE SYNC and up got the one in the previous photos, but don't hold me to that.)  

Gunna agree with you. The resolution looks much lower, no color, and much smaller. I can't see the 4-panel even fitting. Thanks!

Well I'm catching flack from dealers in my area. They are stating that the vehicles has to be "acting up" as they put it before they will perform the TSB on my car. What a load of shit.  

I would throw in their face that it's an intermittent issue and that that the TSB clearly states instructions for applying the fix if the car isn't acting up at that moment. That's really shitty that they are doing that.  

I just got a call from my dealer stating that "their hands are tied" and can't do the update unless the issue is currently happening at that time, when the TSB clearly states that they must reflash it anyway. Ugh.

Made a trip to the dealer to explain things to the service manager, evidently there was some confusion on which TSB was being invoked. Waiting for them to do it right now.  

Wonder if it is a feature that is already incorporated into the next MFT update that is supposed to be out later this summer. Just seems odd that they would try and withhold the option from people that are not having problems and only provide it to those that can demonstrate that they have a problem. Oh well, I need an inspection in Aug so when I go in, I'll inquire. My dealership is pretty good about taking my word for these things and taking care of them.

Trip Computer Screen - Options

Hellooo! I recently picked up a 64 plate Focus ZS (1.6 EB version) and wondered what options you can have on the Trip Computer screen (the LCD by the speedo). I've been through the options but all I have is Trip Computer, Information and settings. Do you know whether it's possible to get music/radio information, or a digital speedo on there? I'm not really fussed about all the mpg stuff, it's slightly annoying! Thanks

It is possible to change the firmware that runs the displays, different countries and different trim levels have variations (e.g USA have a compass [shows NESW] but they didn't originally get the group of 4. Here's a long thread to get you interested, it probably involves lots of research to find if a digital speedo is available and if it suits your car year etc.

Hi everybody,having a focus 2009 turnier.any tips of closing or lowering the time for the light of the trip computer when i get out locking the car?it stays on for 10 minutes,posible to lower the time?is there someone that found a way?

time cant be lowered the clock stays on whilst the cars computer keeps an eye on the engine temp etc after the cars been switched off it can stay on for up to a maximum of 40 minutes
