Charlie Puth (born December 2, 1991) is an American pop singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist best known for featuring in Wiz Khalifa’s international No. 1 single “See You Again”, hailing from Rumson, New Jersey, U.S.

Born and raised in Rumson, New Jersey, Puth began to explore his musicality during high school where he started uploading acoustic song covers to YouTube. After graduating, the singer enrolled at Berklee College for Music by which time Puth had begun generating significant online attention for his videos. In October 2011 Puth’s national profile was raised to new levels with an announcement from Ellen DeGeneres that she had signed the singer and duet partner Emily Luther to her label. DeGeneres had heard the pair’s cover of Adele’s “Someone Like You”, which the duo later played on the show, as well as Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” and the self-penned “Break Again”.

Despite the exposure afforded Puth, the singer departed DeGeneres’ eleveneleven Records in 2013 and singed with Atlantic. Prior to the arrangement with Atlantic, Puth had recorded and self-released a pair of albums, “The Otto Tunes” (2010) and “Ego” 2013, however the records are only available through online music streaming services. In February 2015, Puth released his official debut single “Marvin Gaye, featuring guest vocals from pop singer Meghan Trainor. Rising to No. 61 on the Billboard 200 and topping the charts in New Zealand, the single proved an internationally popular release and introduced the singer to a worldwide market.

Puth enjoyed his greatest success to date however contributing to the Wiz Khalifa single “See You Again”, which topped the singles chart in the U.S., the UK, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Sweden as well as a host of other countries. The single was taken from the “Furious 7: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” in light of the recent death of actor Paul Walker and earned platinum certification in a number of countries. Later in 2015 the singer issued his debut EP “Some Type of Love”, which peaked at No. 3 on the U.S. Heatseekers Chart in May. Following the release Puth issued the single, “Nothing But Trouble”, featuring rapper Lil Wayne, which appeared on the soundtrack to the documentary “808: The Movie” in June 2015.

Live reviews

At Trees in Dallas, TX 3/11/16

Great show! Opening, Sophie Beem has got the voice, movies and looks for it is only a matter of time before she blows up. The following act was Phoebe Ryan which she had a couple of songs that were catchy, however I feel she is still working on her stage performance. It looked and felt like she was trying to hard on crowd interaction, but she was recording herself, so give it some time. Charlie Puth simply outstanding performance. He sound the same recorded or live. Between songs he took a moment or two and talked about different things from his background in music to how he came up with some of his songs (did not know "One Call Away" was wrote for his mother do to him buying a house and living out in LA). He seemed to be very humble and enjoyed talking to the crowd to the point of him grabbing a girl's cellphone to take a video from stage. Here is an article that happened at the show (@ Trees in Dallas 3/11/16)

I drove three and half hours one way for this show and it was worth the drive from Okla to TX. I'm in the 30-40 (male) age group if this might help. Buy your tickets now for his shows sellout quick.

At just 23, Charlie Puth seems to be making all the right moves in the music industry after featuring on Wiz Khalifa's global smash 'See You Again' and upcoming mega-hit 'Marvin Gaye' featuring Meghan Trainor. The pop and R & B singer/songwriter has a fairly androgynous voice that has been praised for its silky smooth quality and emotive undertones. There is definitely a fanbase gathering and as Charlie has been known on the scene for a few years, he has a following for his early tours.

He holds himself with a likeable confidence as it is pretty clear performing live is something he does not have a lot of experience with yet. There are a couple of awkward interludes between tracks and a few bum introductions yet in general it is a pacy show which showcases the vocal well. As he only has a couple of musicians joining him tonight, there really is nowhere to hide and Charlie has to stand up straight to this as he plays his first EP 'Some Type of Love' in full. It is suitably emotive and allows him real freedom to show off the voice and this goes over well along with an acoustic version of 'See You Again' to end a performance from a very promising vocalist.

I have loved listening to Charlie since before he was even famous. He inspires me so much, and I really look up to him because he is an incredible performer and he worked so hard to get to where he is today.

However.... last night I was really disappointed. That was my third Charlie Puth concert, and the only one that I’ve ever had the privilege of sitting in the front row at. It was my birthday present to sit so close to the stage, so I made him a sign that I worked really hard on. The moment Charlie came on stage, he saw my sign from the corner of his eye but wouldn’t read it. He just said “I’ve seen that girl and her sign before” and blew it off. It was rude. Like he wouldn’t even take 2 seconds to even see what it said! And I’ve NEVER made him a sign before, so I’m not sure what he was talking about. Then throughout his performance, he wouldn’t acknowledge his fans. He just did what he had to do and then left. It was so quick. I don’t know if Charlie was in a bad mood or something, but it was very disappointing considering all the money and effort all these people put in to see him.

It was amazing! Charlie is so freaking cute to see in person and all of his facial expression though. He was an exquisite live performer, i enjoy all of the songs so so much! The musicians were also a good package. Love them. Although i must say i was so disappointed about Full Color, i think they wasn't professional enough to organise the crowd. There were rumours that the people who had festival tickets could enter the golden priority area. No wonder the golden priority area became too crowded, i think.

I hate to say that the equipments were also not good enough. I was standing under the big speakers and it didn't produce a good quality of sound. It was deafening.

And also disappointed for the 'no shirtless' rule. It was freaking ridiculous. We all knew that Charlie was stifling hot, poor him that he couldn't take his shirt off.

Overall, it was okay. I love to see him again near the future but obviously not from the same promotor. Although thanks to Full Color for bringing him to Jakarta.

I seen Charlie Puth at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles on Monday, September 17. It honestly wasn’t really a concert, it was more of a Q & A from moderator who asked him really good questions that most people who interview him don’t ask. The setting was very intimate, only 200 people seated. Charlie did sing 3 of his hit songs at the end of the Q & A...From Voicenotes. He did this all with no band. Singing with just his keyboard. He did an amazing job. His voice is amazing live. This was my first time seeing him. I definitely plan on going to see him in concert next time he’s in LA. It was definitely worth the money to see him.

AMAZING!!!! I loved it so much! I loved the band he was playing with. Such great teamwork. And how real was he was in the concert was cool too. He wasn’t just a celebrity preforming, he was a person, just like us singing to us, wanting us to have an amazing time. And I did have an amazing time. My mom and I really enjoyed him playing and he ever comes to my town again, I would see him again. (Pun intended) I love his music and his song writing style. And would love to see him live in concert again. Thank you for letting me write a review.

Oh My Gosh!!! At the concert, Charlie Puth was on another level. He sang all song as perfectly as the recorded ones! His high note gave me the goosebump. He knew how to serve his fans. He took his shirt off!! That was so memorable. And the best one is when he sang see you again. Even before he started to sing, I had already cried.

The best concert I have ever had in my life. Thanks Charlie Puth. You will always be in my heart and other puthinatorz's hearts.

Thanks for that memorable night. It was really valuable for my life.

Charlie Puth and Hailee Steinfeld put on a great show. Singing new songs along with their big hits they made the crowd go wild and made everyone so happy to be sharing this experience. Prior to this concert, in which I took my children to see, I knew very little of either artist but after listening to them and seeing their performance I can say that I will be wanting to listen to more

Also, the location for the concert was perfect. I would definitely go there again for another show.

RECAP: THE "CHARLIE" LIVE EXPERIENCE

Echoing against the smooth, modernist architecture of UBC Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Arena on July 3, 2023, the effervescent hum of thousands of awaiting fans danced through the air. This was a night etched into the calendars of music connoisseurs across Vancouver, all converging to witness the visceral spectacle of Charlie Puth's sonic symphony on his North American "Charlie" Live Experience tour.

charlie puth tour canada

Before the main event, Alexander Stewart, Canada's burgeoning music maestro, seized the stage. Serving up a riveting blend of emotional ballads and rhythmically gripping pop numbers, Stewart skillfully tempered the crowd's rising energy, setting the tone for an evening designed to stretch the boundaries of a typical concert experience.

Then, as anticipation hung heavy in the air, Puth, the night's maestro, strode onto the stage. With every corner of the arena lit by a meticulously orchestrated light show, Puth's palpable magnetism flooded the venue, his presence an unmistakable force against the backdrop of excited whispers and awed silence.

charlie puth tour canada

Puth's setlist – a cascade of his musical journey – flowed like a river through the expansive stadium. Starting with the assertive "Charlie Be Quiet!", moving through the crowd favorites like "Attention" and "BOY", and bridging to the soulful resonance of his recent hits "I Don't Think That I Like Her" and "When You're Sad I'm Sad". Each performance was a tangible manifestation of Puth's musical evolution, his adept grasp over the piano and his hauntingly beautiful vocals transcending beyond the realm of studio recordings.

charlie puth tour canada

Moreover, Puth took an unexpected turn with his covers of The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber's "STAY" and Trey Songz's "Slow Motion," displaying a versatility that left the audience in awe, each rendition a testament to his unique interpretation of these popular tracks.

In true Puth fashion, the evening wasn't just about the music; it was about connection. His lighthearted banter was imbued with gratitude and humbleness, providing intimate snapshots into the man behind the music. Through this, Puth nurtured a bond with the crowd that felt personal, solidifying his reputation as not just a phenomenal musician but a charismatic showman.

charlie puth tour canada

Yet, it was the encore that solidified the night as an unforgettable spectacle. The crowd sang along to "One Call Away," their voices merging into a single entity that spoke volumes about their shared love for Puth's music. As the opening notes of Wiz Khalifa's "See You Again" filled the air, the arena fell into a hush, the power of Puth's emotive vocals echoing into the silent corners of the venue.

This remarkable night in Vancouver is just one of many on Puth's North American tour, which kicked off in Dallas on May 24 and will conclude at the iconic Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on July 11. Celebrating his third studio album, "Charlie," this tour showcases a breadth of Puth's talent and the heart-touching honesty in his music.

charlie puth tour canada

His 2023 tour, an embodiment of the mesmerizing talent Puth holds, is a vivid reminder that music isn't just sound – it's an experience. The "Charlie" Live Experience offers more than just a performance; it offers a connection, a moment of unity for every person in the audience, an intimate peek into Puth's world – all under the spell of his captivating music.

As the echoes of the concert faded away, the power of Puth's performance lingered, imprinted on the hearts of those who had the fortune to experience it. The "Charlie" Live Experience proved to be an unforgettable voyage through Puth's discography, reaffirming his standing as a luminary of contemporary music.

Charlie Puth

Last month, Charlie Puth  wrapped The Honda Civic Tour, which saw the 26-year-old headlining amphitheaters across North America and playing iconic venues like New York’s Radio City Music Hall and Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre. The majority of the crowds were upwards of 20,000 for each date, meaning Puth performed to more than 200,000 people in a matter of weeks.

“To me, it is really about the amount of people who are in there,” Puth says, “because it just makes it so much more fun.”

But “fun” is a modest way for Puth to assess his latest tour. While the 30-date trek was the biggest tour of his career thus far, it was also pretty transformative for Puth as both a songwriter and a performer. The “Attention” singer said in a video tour diary that the tour helped his songwriting, and he spent a majority of the show away from his piano — a big personal step for the singer/songwriter.

Charlie Puth's Voicenotes Tour: The 8 Best Moments

Trending on billboard.

Though Puth is much more comfortable on big stages (“It’s kind of this weird juxtaposition,” he says), his next show will revert back to his beginnings. The New Jersey native will be playing New York City’s 700-person Highline Ballroom on Oct. 5 for JetBlue Mastercard cardmembers, giving some lucky fans an intimate Charlie Puth experience.

Billboard chatted with Puth ahead of the special show to hear about his Honda Civic Tour highlights and takeaways, including a couple of tour-inspired new tunes.

How did this tour feel different from your first two as a headliner?

This time around, I really got to see how wide and diverse my fan base is. I saw girls and boys as young as five years old in the front row, and right next to them were grandparents who were fans of me. I got to see it almost every night, so it inspired me to create more records on the road.

How do you feel like you’ve grown as a performer?

The biggest thing for me when I even started touring a couple of years ago was to just get off of the piano. I had been so afraid of leaving the piano. Now it’s kind of just like, “not giving a shit” attitude — even though I do care. I care about giving the best performance that I can give, but not overthinking so many things.

Kind of like when I’m in the studio… it’s the same “not overthinking” attitude. You don’t want to overthink a melody or chord progression because then it’ll become rigid. The same thing translates live, and you don’t want to overthink your small movements. I’m not dancing or anything like that, but you know what I mean.

Was there a show that marked a turning point for you getting more comfortable with leaving your piano?

Yeah, when I played San Francisco when 22,000 people came to see me perform that night [Aug. 17 at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California]. I was just looking at everybody, saying to myself, “There are 22,000 people here.” I could have never have imagined playing in front of 22,000 people.

View this post on Instagram                   I can’t believe this tour is almost over. This was 20,000 of you last night. And thank you to @stephenputh for playing with me. #hondacivictour @hondastage A post shared by Charlie Puth (@charlieputh) on Aug 18, 2018 at 11:17am PDT

Did any of your  Voicenotes  tracks spark a reaction that made you change the way you view the song?

My song “Boy.” [The reaction] made me look at that song differently. That song has a kind of cult following attached to it, which is really cool. It was later in the set as well, and people lost their mind every night when it came on.

I think it’s because the title is a bit shocking. Before you even listen to the song. It’s like, “Charlie Puth puts out a song called ‘Boy.’ I wonder what this is about.” And then it’s exactly the opposite of what you judged it by its title, if you know what I mean.

Was there a song that was the most fun to sing?

The most fun for me is “Attention,” because I don’t have to sing it at all. It’s wild. Everyone sings each part of that song like it’s the chorus. And “How Long” — that was a joyride, playing that record, because I had to do a four-minute keytar solo and I think people were not expecting that.

[Also] the more intimate moments like playing “Change,” and not telling everybody to put their lighters up — but they just do it off the reaction of the song. Feeling that every night was really special too.

How did the tour impact your songwriting?

When I’m writing a record, the most important thing to me is the key of the song. Make sure the key of the song is in an appropriate vocal range for both boys and girls, and anybody. When you’re surrounded by fans who are singing along every lyric to songs that are already out, you start to remember what their voices sound like when you leave the stage. You have that in mind when you’re making a new record that no one’s heard yet. I always have my fans’ voices in my head, but more so than ever when I just get off stage and I go right to the studio.

Did anything you experienced on this tour result in new songs?

The first night in Canada, there was a rep from Live Nation, and he — without giving it away — he said that I reminded him of an artist that he represented for many years, and one artist that I look up to. It kind of inspired this one song that I worked on tirelessly, continuously, for the entire tour. I have a couple jams. I’m excited for people to hear the next phase.

Is that part of the reason why Elton John called you the other day? I saw your tweet about that crazy text .

No, Elton had just wanted to talk to me for a while. That was a pleasure, talking to him about music. I feel like I get to talk to all the people I look up to — Herbie Hancock texting me, talking about jazz and pop music, Elton John. The list goes on. It’s really wild.

All the References in Taylor Swift’s Title Track ‘The Tortured Poets Department’

Night One Of Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour - Los Angeles, CA

A re you ready for it? Taylor Swift ’s 11th studio record, The Tortured Poets Department , is finally here, and it’s clear she has a lot to say about her recent bouts of heartbreak. On the (surprise!) double album ’s title track, she’s specifically focused on a breakup with someone who isn’t her longtime love Joe Alwyn . The references on “The Tortured Poets Department” seem to point to a different London boy : The 1975’s Matty Healy , who, if he knows what’s good for him, will stay off the internet for a few days because people definitely have feelings about Swift going long on their two-month situationship which ended last June.

But Healy’s not the only one who gets a shout out on track 2, a melodramatic ode to a guy who, for better or worse, is cut from the same cloth as her. And just like that one of the greatest Welsh poets of all time, an iconic punk rocker, and Charlie Puth have all earned themselves a spot in Swiftian lore.

Below, an explanation of all the references you need to make sense of “The Tortured Poets Department.”

Matty Healy

Who uses typewriters anyway? Well, Tom Hanks , for starters, but let’s assume Swift isn’t writing love songs about the nicest guy in Hollywood leaving one at her apartment. All signs point to Healy, who told GQ five years ago that a typewriter is one of the things he can’t live without. (Interestingly enough, in that same interview, he talked about his notebook, another thing he cherishes, being mostly full of “stories that I write about my dreams of being in love with other pop stars.”) The fact that the man in this song left one of his favorite things at Swift’s home feels like a sign pointing to just how head over heels he was for her. Too bad she’s more of a quill pen kind of girl .

For another clue that Healy is the object of this song’s affection, look no further than Swift’s later reference to her man being “a tattooed golden retriever.” Healy, who is covered in tattoos , certainly fits the bill. Not to mention, he has ink inspired by one of the original Beat poets William S. Burroughs, who could certainly be described as tortured . But it’s a rather interesting analogy to make being that, in dating parlance, golden retrievers are known to be wholly loyal, supportive, goofy, and laidback, which doesn’t quite fit with The 1975 singer’s chaotic public persona . It does, on the other hand, sound more than a bit like someone else Swift knows . (This song is not about her current beau, though fans sure think “The Alchemy” is.)

Dylan Thomas

Swift may be hopelessly devoted to her new guy, but what she makes clear on the title track’s rather scathing chorus is that Dylan Thomas he is definitely not , going so far as to laugh in his face for being delusional enough to ever think such a thing. (It’s worth noting that Healy has been known to dabble in poetry .) The wildly popular Welsh poet, who got his start in the 1930s, was known for his hyper emotional style of lyrical poetry that was full of clever wordplay and visual imagery. He was considered a New Romantic for the way in which used the Romantic era of the late 18th century and early 19th century as inspiration to create a literary style all his own. One of his most famous works is 1931’s Do not go gentle into that good night , which urges readers to fight bravely against death no matter when it comes.

Perhaps, after reading his poetry, you won’t be surprised to learn that Thomas had a reputation for being quite the tormented artist. As he got older, he struggled with alcoholism , which led him to act erratically. His friends would say his drinking was his way of coping with his shyness, depression, and financial instability. In her 1982 memoir, Thomas’ wife, Caitlin Thomas, said that her marriage to the poet “was not a love story proper; it was more of a drink story.” When she died 12 years later, the New York Times would describe her as Thomas’ “drinking and brawling partner.”

Thomas died in 1953 at the age of 39 after collapsing at Manhattan’s Chelsea Hotel where he had an apartment. The legend goes that he drank 18 whiskies in a row and went into a coma, dying of acute alcohol poisoning. (Fun fact: Swift’s friend and Eras Tour opener Phoebe Bridgers released a song called “Dylan Thomas” in 2019 with her band Better Oblivion Community Center that nods to his much mythologized demise. Spoiler: this isn’t the track’s only connection to Bridgers.) However, it is now believed that Thomas died of pneumonia that had gone undiagnosed by his physician.

Patti Smith

Swift is undoubtedly one of music’s best modern songwriters, but on this track she makes it clear she has nothing on Patti Smith , who’s been called a “ punk poet laureate ” thanks to her 1975 debut, Horses, a clever blend of free form poetry and punk rock. But Smith is more than a charismatic musician , she is the author of several poetry collections and books including two bestselling memoirs, 2010’s Just Kids, which focused on her early life and friendship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe , and 2012’s M Train , which looked at her life and career after Horses.

Smith has never topped the music charts, but she has won countless awards for her work, including the National Book Award in 2010 and, the following year, the prestigious Polar Music Prize , often called “the Nobel Prize of Music.” (Like Dylan Thomas, she also spent some time at the Chelsea Hotel, but we’ll save that for a little later.) Clearly, there is no shame in feeling a little inadequate compared to her. It’s just a wee bit surprising to hear that a newly minted billionaire pop star who has basically broken every musical record feels that way. Smith seems to be in Swift’s camp as well. In 2019, she came to Swift’s defense after the latter was criticized for not being more politically outspoken. “She’s a pop star who’s under tremendous scrutiny all the time,” Smith told the New York Times . “And one can’t imagine what that’s like.”

The Chelsea Hotel

It’s safe to say, the infamous residence hotel located in, as its name suggests, the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan would be a fitting headquarters for the Tortured Poets Department. Built between 1863 and 1865, the newly renovated 12-story hotel has long been a respite for promising artists like Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, and Thomas Wolfe who were looking for cheap rent and few frills as they pursued the bohemian lifestyle.

Playwright Arthur Miller, who stayed there for six years following his 1961 divorce from Marilyn Monroe , called it “the high spot of the surreal.” He meant this quite literally; more than a few times he had gotten high off the marijuana smoke that often wafted through the halls. “There are no vacuum cleaners, no rules and shame,” Miller said of the place where he would end up writing the play After the Fall .

The Chelsea Hotel is also where Bob Dylan wrote Blonde on Blonde , Andy Warhol shot parts of his experimental film Chelsea Girls , and Sid Vicious allegedly stabbed his girlfriend Nancy Spungen to death. As previously mentioned, Dylan Thomas and Patti Smith both lived there, but they never crossed paths. Sixteen years after Thomas’ death, Smith moved into room 1017, the smallest in the hotel, with Mapplethorpe for a rate of $55 per week. “The Chelsea was like a dollhouse in the Twilight Zone, ” Smith wrote in Just Kids. “With a hundred rooms, each a small universe.”

Shortly after Swift’s new album dropped, the Chelsea Hotel excitedly posted on their Instagram Story that they were “screaming” over the song, which they were turning way up, and “ready to welcome Swifites.”  Those who are looking to book a room for a night will pay at least five times what Smith did 55 years ago.

Jack Antonoff

On “The Tortured Poets Department,” Swift’s closest confidante is “Jack,” which is undoubtedly a reference to her friend and longtime producer Jack Antonoff , who has worked on all four of the re-recordings of her old albums (aka the “Taylor’s Versions” ), as well as seven records of all original material, including her latest. (He is a co-writer on the title track.) He also produced The 1975’s 2022 album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language, making him someone who knew both parties intimately.

If Entertainment Tonight ’s sources are to be believed , Antonoff was the matchmaker who brought the musical duo together. And there are clues that he was there from the very beginning of this short-term relationship. Antonoff was hanging out with Swift and Healy at members-only Casa Cipriani in New York, where they were first spotted holding hands . Days later, the two were again photographed together, this time leaving Electric Lady Studios where Swift was recording with Antonoff.

Thanks to Swift’s shoutout on the title track, it’s safe to assume things might have been a little awkward for Antonoff after the two split up. Being that Healy did not attend Antonoff’s wedding this past summer but Swift did, one could venture to guess that she got custody of Jack in the breakup.

Taylor Swift’s Cringe Charlie Puth Lyric Actually Makes a Lot of Sense

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Do you know the lyric? The lyric heard round the world? You’ll find it on the title track of Taylor Swift’s new album, The Tortured Poets Department : “You smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate/ We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist,” Swift croons on the second track. It’s kind of a backhanded compliment: “We like you, Charlie, but those Grammy nominations and multi-platinum singles aren’t really all that great.”

Fans and haters of Swift alike have joined in harmony to ask : Where did this Charlie Puth infatuation come from? My follow-up question, of course: Does Swift know the phrase “I’m hungies?” Let’s hope Travis Kelce doesn’t get his hands on that one; seems like a phrase he’d quickly become a fan of.

The answer is that, the closer you look at Swift’s interactions with Puth online over the years, the more obvious this connection should’ve been to the Swifties. In fact, it’s perhaps a little shocking Puth himself doesn’t cameo on “The Tortured Poets Department,” harmonizing with Swift on the line following his shoutout (perhaps the most egregious line on the entire album): “I scratched your head, you fell asleep/ Like a tattooed golden retriever.” I can practically hear Puth singing it now.

If This Taylor Swift Album Leak Is Real, It’s All About Matty Healy

The Puth street goes both ways. While Swift has approached Puth with compliments in the past, Puth has also shouted out Swift a handful of times. The connection appears to begin somewhere around 2017, when Puth was gearing up to release his second studio album, Voicenotes , and Swift was making a huge comeback with Reputation . In a 2017 Genius video explaining his lead single “Attention,” Puth starts by connecting his song to Swift’s debut album.

“I couldn’t come out with a song like this as a brand-new artist. I kind of had to Taylor Swift it,” Puth said. “In 2006, when she put out ‘My Song,’ it was very approachable. It could be applied to a lot of situations. I took that same approach.”

Charlie Puth performs during the 2024 Gershwin Prize for Popular Song presentation to Elton John and Bernie Taupin by the Library of Congress at DAR Constitution Hall on March 20, 2024 in Washington, DC.

Years later, in July 2021, Puth took to his Instagram story to praise Swift for being “such a genius,” specifically talking about why he loves “Teardrops on My Guitar.” After explaining why the chords make the song unique, Puth went on to say, “I just wanted to say that I think it’s so wonderful.”

We’ve known Puth is a Swiftie for quite some time, but when does Swift herself enter the picture? Not long after his “Teardrops on My Guitar” praise hit Insta. In August 2021, Puth left a note on Swift’s very first TikTok : “Welcome to Tok fellow Sag,” he commented.

Taylor Swift replies to welcome comment from Charlie Puth on TikTok. “I've lurked your account for ages! Thanks for the welcome, piano prince 👑” pic.twitter.com/VKUJvQbTxr — Pop Base (@PopBase) August 23, 2021

“I’ve lurked your account for ages! Thanks for the welcome, piano prince,” Swift responded, adding a crown emoji. The first seeds of The Tortured Poets Department were planted on TikTok back in 2021.

Recently, in May 2023, Puth created a mash-up of his song “When You’re Sad I’m Sad” and “I Knew You Were Trouble” by Swift, which he performed on tour . Perhaps Swift can find a way to interpolate this into her Eras Tour, if she really wants Puth to become a “bigger artist.”

There’s an extra layer to this history: Fans have speculated that TTPD is all about Swift’s ex Matty Healy , the frontman of The 1975. That would mean that the guy she’s talking about in “The Tortured Poets Department''—you know, the tattooed golden retriever who ate seven bars of chocolate; remember that The 1975 has a very popular song titled “Chocolate,” although it isn’t about the bars—is Healy.

Charlie Puth Is the Latest Male Celeb to Queerbait for Likes

Flashback to 2018, when Puth released a cover of “If You Leave Me Now” with Boyz II Men. These tweets have since been deleted—and therefore might be fake but look totally real—but Healy appears to have shouted Puth out for the track. “That Charlie Puth and Boyz II Men track is harrrrrd,” Healy allegedly tweeted from his now-inactive Twitter account.

2018 pic.twitter.com/oarofnlfd2 — The 1975 TH (@the1975_thteam) April 18, 2024

“Thank u matty!” Puth responded.

There are many possible hypothetical situations here: Perhaps Healy reintroduced Swift to Puth’s music. She was a slight fan, but Healy was a huge one, so they ended up talking about him for hours. Or maybe, between 2018 and 2021, Healy stopped listening to Puth, leading Swift to put him back on the right path. But my favorite conspiracy theory is that, in actuality, Swift and Healy’s love of Puth’s music was what brought them together in the first place. That’s the kind of love we all deserve.

Taylor Swift released her 11th studio album,  The Tortured Poets Department,  on Friday, April 19. The 31-track LP — really a double-album anthology — is a sprawling collection of moody synth-pop and alt-rock. It contains flourishes of all her previous records, most notably Midnights , Folklore , and Evermore , but very much holds its own artistic weight. The lyrics are some of her wildest, most stream-of-consciousness to date. On the title track, for example, Swift relays (in hilariously blunt detail) some of the mundane activities she and an ex would do together.

Taylor Swift says Charlie Puth "should be a bigger artist." Here's why:

Charlie Puth poses on the red carpet of the Breakthrough Prize Awards and Ceremony

You see, not only can Puth make music with actual instruments and equipment, he can do it with household items.

"My whole thing on TikTok is to prove that anything in this world can be made into music," he told Host Jimmy Fallon in the interview. "Everything has tonality to it."

He then proceeded to prove this by making a completely original beat out of just mug and spoon sounds. By the end, he created a certified banger. Watch for yourself!

Was this the video that crystallized Taylor Swift's glowing opinion of Charlie Puth? Maybe so!

Patti Smith was 'moved' to be mentioned on Taylor Swift's 'Tortured Poets Department'

Patti Smith is a proud member of Taylor Swift's " Tortured Poets Department ."

The poet and singer thanked Swift on Instagram after being named-dropped on the "Cruel Summer" pop star's latest album. On the titular track from "The Tortured Poets Department," Swift sings, "You're not Dylan Thomas. I'm not Patti Smith. This ain't the Chelsea Hotel. We're modern idiots."

"I was moved to be mentioned in the company of the great Welsh poet Dylan Thomas," Smith wrote on Instagram Friday, sharing photos of herself reading Thomas' book "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog."

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

"Thank you Taylor," she added.

Smith has been nominated for four Grammy Awards and released her debut studio album, "Horses," in 1975. Thomas, meanwhile, was a Welsh poet and author of "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night." Harvard professor Stephanie Burt, who teaches a class on Swift, told USA TODAY that Smith is "who you invoke if you want to talk about a woman onstage who is absolutely magnetic and a poet with a capital 'P.'"

Alyson Hannigan reacts to 'American Pie' shout-out on 'Tortured Poets Department'

Smith wasn't the only star thrilled by a name-drop on Swift's new album. On Instagram, "American Pie" actress Alyson Hannigan reacted to her 1999 comedy being referenced on Swift's song "So High School," which includes the lyric, "I'm watching 'American Pie' with you on a Saturday night.'"

Taylor Swift name-drops Patti Smith and Dylan Thomas on new song. Here’s why

After sharing a text showing that she was already excited for the album to drop, Hannigan told fans that she could "barely function yesterday in the very best way." The song is believed to be about Swift's relationship with Travis Kelce , and Hannigan joked that "it's like I'm basically on their date with them, right?" In response to a fan suggesting the lyric was a nod to her, the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star also wrote, "That's what I'm always going to tell myself."

Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian and Ye feud timeline: VMAs to 'The Tortured Poets Department'

Clara Bow, Charlie Puth also receive mentions on 'The Tortured Poets Department'

Still yet to weigh in on their name drop is Charlie Puth , who received a plug on the title track "The Tortured Poets Department" when Swift sings, "We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist."

Other names mentioned on the album include the late silent film star Clara Bow, who gets an entire song named after her. Swift also drops the first names Lucy and Jack on the song "The Tortured Poets Department," which fans have speculated refer to Boygenius member Lucy Dacus and Swift's frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff . And while Swift does not directly mention Kim Kardashian , the song " thanK you aIMee " is heavily implied to be about her, with the title even spelling out Kardashian's first name in capital letters.
