They are especially handy for people who already drive a  mid-size SUV  or a car with a towing package. Though finding the right one for your family’s travel style can be a little bit of a challenge.

The InTech RV Flyer

  • Dry Weight of 1,450 – 2,020 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 240 – 410 lbs.
  • Sleeps up to 2 to 3 people or more

The InTech RV Flyer is an impressively customizable RV that can be set up with a dry weight as low as 1,450-pounds, though you can still deck it out with optional extras which can tip the scales as high as 2,020-pounds.

With this level of customization available it’s best to work directly with the manufacturer as they can walk you through your options to make sure that you get the travel trailer of your dreams with the technical stats that pair perfectly with your preferred tow vehicle.

One of the great things about the InTech RV Flyer is the fully welded cage frame and rugged tires.

It gives it the durability to go off-road when towed behind a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Other optional extras to consider include the double rear doors, a slide-out kitchen, an awning, a roof rack, and an air conditioning system with heat.

It can also be engineered to serve as a functional toy hauler with enough storage room to bring a pair of dirt bikes or perhaps a small ATV.

You will also appreciate the storage space offered by the InTech RV Flyer. The front tongue box provides you with a place to keep boots and other soiled items so you don’t end up bringing dirt into the main living area.

The interior also has a lot of thoughtful storage areas. Just make sure that when you are loading it up, that you don’t push the overall gross vehicle weight above the maximum towing capacity of your tow vehicle.

2. The LG My Pod

The LG My Pod

  • Dry weight of 760 lbs.
  • Hitch weight of 110 lbs.
  • Sleeps 2 people
  • Made from molded fiberglass

The LG My Pod is a teardrop travel trailer with impressive aerodynamics that makes its already impressively lightweight frame feel almost feather-like behind your car or SUV.

The interior of the My Pod is admittedly a little small. Though it is well-appointed.

There’s enough room for two people to sleep comfortably, and it even has an entertainment center to let you watch a movie on a rainy day.

You can also appreciate that it comes with a built-in air conditioning system as part of the standard model.

This isn’t always the case with the My Pod’s shoulder-to-shoulder competitors.

It gives you enough water storage to do basic things like wash dishes and clean your hands without having to haul water in your tow vehicle.

Just keep in mind that the water tanks will increase the gross weight of the Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro.

A single gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds, so a full fresh water tank can add 168 pounds when pulling it down the road.

Just double-check the towing capacity of your vehicle before packing it to the gills, as this trailer fully loaded can have a gross vehicle weight rating of up to 2,000-pounds.

Assuming your tow vehicle can safely handle towing this much weight, you’ll be treated to a teardrop travel trailer that feels surprisingly spacious.

The bed inside can sleep a couple comfortably, and has a lot of thoughtful net bags to let you store and grab personal items.

The kitchen in the rear hatch of the 2020 Jayco Hummingbird 10RK is nicely decked out.

It comes with a microwave, as well as a single basin sink, and a sturdy RV absorption refrigerator.

Though this particular floorplan does not include a gas range, which is available in other floorplan models of the Hummingbird.

6. The 2021 NuCamp Tag

NuCamp Tag

  • Dry weight of 1,284 lbs.
  • Hitch weight of 130 lbs.
  • GVWR of 2,020 lbs.
  • 8 gallon fresh water storage tank

The 2021 NuCamp Tag is a compact teardrop travel trailer with an ultralight dry weight of just 1,284-pounds.

Just bear in mind that when fully loaded the gross vehicle weight can get as high as 2,020-pounds.

One of the things to love about the NuCamp Tag is that it has a ton of great optional extras and different configurations.

If you like to camp off the grid, then you’ll want to invest in the special “Boondock” package which beefs up the travel trailer with the kind of special features you need for off-road performance.

This means you will want to be careful not to overpack if you have a tow vehicle with a limited maximum towing capacity.

What you get on the inside is innovative durability. The Tiger Moth has a powder-coated steel frame that adds to the long-term value, as well as enough sleeping space for two.

Though it can be reconfigured to sleep up to 5 people with the inclusion of the upper tent portion.

Optional extras to consider include a 5,000 BTU air conditioner, as well as heavy-duty loading bars and additional cargo space.

When you work directly with the manufacturer you can customize a lot of the Tiger Moth’s features to match a wide range of camping styles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can i safely tow.

Start by checking the maximum towing capacity of your intended tow vehicle.

Then multiply that number by .8. By reducing your effective towing capacity by 20% you will have power in reserve for doing things like merging onto a highway pulling the travel trailer up a steep hill.

Staying within 80% of your vehicle’s maximum towing capacity also reduces the risk of developing a dangerous trailer sway problem.

How Much Can A Mid-Size SUV Tow?

The average towing capacity of a mid-size SUV sits around 3,500 to 3,700-pounds.

Though there are certainly some robust models that can tow over 5,000-pounds and some lesser models that can only tow up to 1,500-pounds.

If you have a small SUV or a mid-size SUV with limited maximum towing capacity, sticking to the models on this list will give you the best chance of finding a travel trailer that you can safely pair it with.

There certainly are a lot of great lightweight travel trailers under 1,500-pounds. Just keep in mind that the more cargo you load into a compact travel trailer the more the gross weight goes up.

If you aren’t sure how much your intended tow vehicle can pull, you can always check the owner’s manual.

Many automotive manufacturers also post their tow statistics online, just make sure you are factoring in the make, model, and trim level of your vehicle.

Once you have your towing statistics in hand and you’ve limited yourself to a maximum weight limit of 80% of the maximum capacity, you can start to sort through the best travel trailers on this list based on your preferred camping style.

If you are looking to get off the grid for a few days of rugged boondocking, then the Taxa Outdoors Tiger Moth and the Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro 12RK might be two of the best travel trailers under 1,500-pounds for you.

Just bear in mind that if you overload them the gross vehicle weight can push upwards of 2,000-pounds.

If you are looking for a lightweight sleeping compartment with some optional outdoor living space, then the LG My Pod with its expandable tent might be the best travel trailer under 1,500-pounds for you.

It has sleek aerodynamics towing down the road, which makes its already impressive lightweight feel even lighter.

Yet it’s also comfortable and arguably roomy when you set up camp at the end of the day.

6 Best Pop-Up Campers Under 1,500 Pounds

Pop-up campers are great. The fun of camping in a tent with the ease and comfort of a travel trailer all rolled into one. Quick and easy to pitch, and often equipped with the gear you’d expect from a larger camper, pop-up travel trailers are a popular choice among new and seasoned camping fans alike.

Add to all this the fact that many models are incredibly light and can be towed by most family vehicles and you have a recipe for an excellent holiday, wherever and whenever you like.

If you’re looking to purchase the right camper for your needs, there are many travel trailer models to choose from. So where do you start? Here, we’ve listed some of the very best lightweight pop-up travel trailers weighing less than 1,500 pounds.

Note: All measurements are interior and do not include exterior or towing measurements unless stated otherwise. Dry weight is the weight of the travel trailer containing standard features and fixtures with no fuel or fluids, passengers, or cargo. More details can be found on the company websites.

Livin Lite Quicksilver 8.0

lightweight pop up travel trailers under 1500 lbs

  • Length: 16 feet
  • Width: 7 feet
  • Height: 6.3 feet
  • Dry Weight: 994 pounds
  • Standard Fixtures: 2-burner stove, dinette with bench seating, sleeps up to 6 people on 2 full-size beds and a convertible bed, air conditioning prewiring, privacy screen

The Livin Lite Quicksilver 8.0 might look like a fairly basic pop-up camper, but a lot of thought has gone into its design and construction to make sure that it lasts for decades. The aluminum galley and countertops keep the camper as light as possible whilst the freeze/crack-proof linoleum floor ensures weather protection and easy low maintenance.

The stylish and generous galley comes complete with ample countertop space for preparing meals, a sink with a hand pump, a 1-burner stove, and a water heater. A 20-gallon water tank and a hot/cold galley faucet are available as additional options.

As with most small campers, there is a variety of different packages you can choose from whilst kitting out your Quicksilver, and the easy-to-navigate website makes building your own custom camper a breeze.

Although this travel trailer doesn’t come with a bathroom or toilet, an outside shower is optional, and for those who’d like a little more space, you can add an extra awning and awning room, which creates considerably more room for you and your family.

The Quicksilver trailer is ideal for SUVs and is incredibly easy to hitch, unhitch, and set up anywhere you’d like. And for the more adventurous people out there, there are options for off-road driving which include bigger wheels for more clearance on rough terrain.

There are tons of options for this little travel trailer, so be sure to discuss them with your dealer to make sure yours is built to your specifications.

Forest River Rockwood Tent 1640LTD

lightweight pop up travel trailers under 1500 lbs

  • Length: 17 feet
  • Road Height: 5 feet 4 inches
  • Dry Weight: 1,465 pounds
  • Standard Fixtures: kitchen with 2-burner stove and compact refrigerator, sleeps up to 6 on 2 full-size beds and a convertible bed, screened room, 7ft awning, A/C and heater prewiring

Forest River is a big name in the world of travel trailers, and the Rockwood Tent proves that it’s for good reason. The perfect camper for families, the Rockwood comes with all the equipment you need for your trip, plus optional additions including a furnace, bike rack, heated mattresses, screen room, outside grill and worktop, and a refrigerator.

Lightweight doesn’t have to mean small and cramped, and with the beds situated at each tent end, the Rockwood is spacious. The open floor plan allows for plenty of easy movement around the kitchen and dinette areas. As with most lightweight travel trailers , there is no toilet or bathroom option, but when everything else is so expertly fitted this is a small sacrifice to make for a high-class model.

Aliner Ranger 10

lightweight pop up travel trailers under 1500 lbs

  • Length: 12 feet 8 inches
  • Width: 6 feet 6 inches
  • Road Height: 4 feet 7 inches
  • Dry Weight: 1,225 pounds
  • Standard Fixtures: Water heater and 11-gallon freshwater tank, water pump, furnace, and outdoor shower, kitchen with sink, compact refrigerator, 2-burner stove and vent fan, skylights, porch light, solar port, sleeps up to 4

Aliner has been building A-frame travel trailers since the early 1970s and is supposedly the first company to do so. With that in mind, you can’t go wrong if you purchase one of their Ranger 10 models.

Available with 2 different floor plans, you can either buy a trailer with less sleeping space and more storage space or more space for beds and less space to store your camping equipment. The front kitchen model sleeps 2 on a convertible bed whilst allowing for bigger cabinets, and the front bunk model sleeps 4 on the convertible bed and extra bunks, doing away with the extra cabinets. This does make the storage space smaller, but not too small, and with both models cabinets, a refrigerator, sink, and 2-burner stove fit nicely into the space.

With the added options of a soft front dormer for added light and ventilation, A/C and heat pump, an outside grill, and a setup time of about 5 minutes, the Aliner Ranger 10 travel trailer lives up to the company’s hard-earned reputation. Many models that the company builds are ultra-lightweight, and they offer a huge variety of layouts, packages, and options to suit anyone’s needs. Check out their website to request a brochure and get more details on the Ranger 10 and their other campers.

SylvanSport Go

lightweight pop up travel trailers under 1500 lbs

  • Length: 7 feet
  • Width: 10 feet
  • Height: 6.5 feet
  • Dry Weight: 840 pounds
  • Standard Fixtures: Sleeps up to 4 adults on 4 self-inflating, insulated mattresses, stargazer windows, large awning, dinette table

The SylvanSport Go is a truly versatile little travel trailer with three modes: Camper, Gear Hauler, and Utility Trailer.

The Camper mode is, obviously, the mode you’d set up for living in, and gives a very similar experience to camping in a much more basic standard tent. The SylvanSport Go doesn’t come with any luxury amenities or fixtures like a kitchen or cabinets but makes up for this by boasting plenty of comfortable space that sleeps up to 4 adults. As well as the self-inflating, insulated mattresses, the tent offers a huge amount of headroom and a table with seating. The beds can be arranged as 2 extra-large twins or 1 king-plus bed

A front storage box allows you to safely stow away any equipment and when you put the trailer into Gear Hauler or Utility Trailer mode, it can carry anything from mountain bikes to quads and kayaks or canoes to bulkier heavy-duty equipment.

Coachmen Clipper Express 9.0TD

lightweight pop up travel trailers under 1500 lbs

  • Length: 13 feet
  • Height: 3 feet 9 inches
  • Dry Weight: 776 pounds
  • Standard Fixtures: LED lighting, laminated countertops, deep bowl acrylic sink, Bluetooth stereo, refrigerator, furnace, ash cabinets, air conditioning, propane camp stove, folding table and chairs, 2 windows, pop up rear entry hatch, outdoor grill, solar panel adapter, port-a-potty, sleeps 2

Another high-class RV from the famous Forest River family, the Coachmen Clipper Express travel trailer is a compact and sleek teardrop design trailer that brings comfort, style, and convenience to camping. With plenty of storage under the bed (which is also where the toilet lives) and in the kitchen, the Clipper Express looks smaller on the outside than it does on the inside, and a surprising number of amenities fit neatly in the space.

The 1.6 cubic foot fridge sits underneath one of the kitchen counters and the propane stove fits into a mount on the outside of the trailer, allowing for alfresco dining and leaving the countertops free for food prep. Two large windows and a mesh pop-up window provide plenty of natural light and ventilation and built-in A/C helps keep the tent cool in the hot weather. In the deluxe version of the camper, a butane furnace is also available.

As with many of these travel trailers, an off-road package is also available and comes complete with a built-in sink and 16-gallon freshwater tank, water heater, outdoor shower to wash off the dust and mud from a long day out on the backroads, and a roof rack to store your bulkier items.

With top-quality laminate flooring and dark ash wood cabinets, the Coachmen Clipper Express, as with all Forest River RVs, brings a real touch of class to your camping trip.

Roadman Camper

lightweight pop up travel trailers under 1500 lbs

  • Length: 5.1 feet
  • Width: 3.1 feet
  • Closed Height: 2.9 feet
  • Dry Weight: 250 pounds
  • Standard Fixtures: LED lights, aluminum luggage rack, storage under the bed platform, carpeted floor, heavy-duty canvas tent, dressing room, inside pockets, 4 windows, awning, sleeps 2

Something a little different, the Roadman Camper is designed specifically to be towed by a motorbike. About as basic as you can get, the Roadman comes without kitchen or bathroom amenities but does provide warmth and comfort to your motorcycling journey.

Elevating the bed above the ground makes for a warmer and more comfortable sleeping experience, and the height means no awkward crouching or crawling around in the dark after a long day on the road.

With a built-in dressing room, ample space is provided to change in and out of bulky biking gear, and the sleeping area comfortably fits a double inflatable mattress. Unlike other lightweight travel trailers, the tent does not automatically pop up and you’ll have to manually erect it. But with a setup time of around 7 minutes, this is hardly a problem, considering the quality of the product. This also means that the trailer can be used just for cargo, as the tent and all of its equipment can be removed if not needed to make room for other items.

When stowing the tent, there is also room in the trailer for everything else you’ll need for your adventures, including a stove and food. The trailer can carry an overall weight of 275 pounds.

Also available in queen size, which essentially has the same features but on a slightly larger scale, or just as the cargo trailer without the tent, the Roadman is incredibly versatile and ideal for any motorbiking trip you might have planned. Of course, the lightweight trailer can also be towed behind a car or truck.

How To Choose A Pop Up Camper

With so many different travel trailer models on the market, it’s important to know exactly what you’re looking for before you start your search. Narrowing down your choices before heading to the store can save you an awful lot of time and effort and make the final decision much easier. You might even consider this article on “ How to Buy a Used Tent Trailer ” to help with your choice. Because often buying used may be the way to go.

What you want from your trailer is dependent on a lot of factors. The article, “ Should I Buy a Tent Trailer, Travel Trailer, or RV? ” can help you decide based on your camping style.

Vehicle Towing Capacity

Some travel trailers can be towed by a family sedan, or even, as we’ve seen, a motorbike, whilst others will be more suited to an SUV or a truck. Ensure that you’ve checked your vehicle owner’s manual and established just how much yours can tow before buying a trailer. It’s recommended that you always stay below your vehicle’s towing weight to give you optimum acceleration and braking power.

How Many People

The size of lightweight travel trailers varies. Take into consideration the maximum number of people that will be sleeping in it at one time. It’s also worth remembering that just because a brochure says a trailer can sleep 4 doesn’t mean it will be very comfortable, and some trailers do require you to get quite cozy. If you want 4 to live happily in it for a week, consider buying a trailer that sleeps 5 or 6 instead.

Many trailers also have the added option of purchasing an extra tent or room to expand the living space inside, so thoroughly check the list of options.

Remember that more people require more space to store their belongings, so keep in mind how much the trailer allows you to stow.

Taking It Off-Road

Whether or not you want to take your trailer off-road or stick to well-maintained public roads will make a big difference to the model you choose to purchase. There’s no point in buying a fully-armored, extra reinforced travel trailer if you’re going to be sticking to highways and popular routes.

On the other hand, if you’ll be spending the majority of your time camping in the middle of nowhere, across country roads and rough terrain, a standard trailer just won’t cut it and you’ll need to think about purchasing a trailer designed for the backroads. Think bigger wheels, stronger axles, and tougher bodywork.

Many travel trailers come in standard and off-road models, so check with the dealer or on the company website to make sure you get exactly what you need.

If you are planning on taking your travel trailer into the middle of nowhere, you’ll also want to keep in mind its off-grid capabilities. Making sure water and fuel tanks have a large enough capacity, heating, A/C, insulation suitable for the conditions, and batteries, solar panels, and lights are all in working condition and can last for as long as you want to be off-grid is a must and needs to be carefully considered.

Do You Want A Bathroom Or Kitchen?

As we have seen, many smaller travel trailers don’t come with any sort of kitchen or bathroom , although some do offer these as options for an added price.

If you are going to be spending the majority of your camping time on sites where these amenities are available, or in the backwoods away from others, you may not need to bother taking up precious space with a toilet or kitchen.

But if you’re not a fan of campsite facilities, or not keen on the idea of leaving your trailer on cold, dark nights, definitely opt for whatever toilet and kitchen options your trailer may come with.

Wrapping It Up

Most travel trailers come with a huge variety of customizable options, with prices dependent on the fixtures and gear you choose. With so much to offer, you’re sure to find a fantastic travel trailer that works perfectly for you for years to come .

Forest River Flagstaff 176LTD Floorplan

If you’re wondering why an RV manufacturer would make two identical RVs, except for their color schemes and branding, this is a pretty common practice in the RV industry.

Because it allows different RV dealers, especially ones close to each other, the ability to sell different RV models and brands prevents them from competing directly on the same RV.

So whether you’re looking at the Flagstaff 176LTD or the Rockwood 1640LTD, just know that you’re looking at pretty much the same camper.

Both of which are great, if you’re looking for a quality and affordable small lightweight camper.

  • Cost :  $12,000
  • Closed Length :  12 Feet 11 Inches
  • Open Length :  17 Feet 11 Inches
  • Dry Weight :  1,642 Pounds

Another popular small lightweight pop-up is the Coachmen Clipper LS 806XLS, which is one of the smallest and lightest pop-up campers Coachmen makes, with a box length of only 12 feet 11 inches and a dry weight of just 1,642 pounds.

Allowing this little pop-up camper to fit into the tightest of campsites and be towed by a wide variety of vehicles.

Despite its smaller size though, this pop-up from Coachmen is still loaded with comfort features and amenities, including a full kitchenette with a kitchen sink, propane stove, and mini-fridge, as well as insulated double bunks, sleeping space for six, and a good amount of storage capacity.

Giving you everything you need and nothing you don’t, to keep the weight down and the price affordable.

One of my favorite things about this compact pop-up camper though is its unique floorplan, which features two opposing gaucho benches as opposed to the more common booth dinette.

This allows for much more flexibility when hanging out inside the camper , as the opposing gaucho benches can be used as a dining space, living space, or sleeping space depending on how they’re configured.

Allowing the same area inside this compact pop-up camper to serve multiple functions, which always comes in handy when camping small.

5. Sylvansport Go Camper

  • Cost :  $14,495
  • Closed Length :  11 Feet 10 Inches
  • Open Length :  11 Feet 10 Inches
  • Dry Weight :  840 Pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity :  4

Without a doubt, the most unique and versatile small pop-up camper on this list is the Sylvansport Go Camper , as this compact trailer from Sylvansport is truly one of a kind when it comes to design and functionality.

Plus, it’s one of the few pop-ups that provides toy hauler utility.

Due to the trailer’s roof rack and gear deck, which allow you to bring a wide variety of sports gear and toys with you while camping, including bikes, kayaks, surfboards, paddleboards, and even dirt bikes.

Thanks to the gear deck’s 800-pound max cargo-carrying capacity.

To see other small pop-up toy haulers, check out our blog post “ The 8 Best Pop-Up Camper Toy Haulers You Can Buy! “.

This compact pop-up camper also features a super lightweight design , with a dry weight of just 840 pounds.

Allowing this camper to be pulled by a wide variety of vehicles, including SUVs and even some crossovers like the Subaru Forester and the Honda CR-V .

If you’re looking for a luxurious camping experience though, this is not the camper for you, as the tent pod on this camper is not much more than a glorified tent with sleeping space for four .

However, if you’re someone seeking adventure and just need a place to rest your head at the end of the day, this might just be the perfect little pop-up camper for you.

6. Aliner Scout Lite

  • Average Price :  $16,500
  • Closed Length :  13 Feet
  • Open Length :  13 Feet
  • Dry Weight :  1,180 Pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity :  3

When most people are looking for a small pop-up, they often only think about the more traditional tent-style campers with collapsible canvas walls and dual fold-out bunks.

However, there is another type of pop-up camper that’s also small and lightweight called the A-frame or hard-side pop-up .

That utilizes hard-sided fiberglass walls and real windows similar to a travel trailer instead of canvas walls and vinyl windows .

This offers numerous advantages over the standard pop-up camper, including better insulation for cold weather camping and better sound deadening to help block out exterior noise.

Aliner Scout Lite Floorplan

Aliner Scout Lite Floorplan

And one of the most popular small lightweight A-frame campers is the Aliner Scout Lite, which has a dry weight of only 1,180 pounds and an overlength of just 13 feet.

Making this pop-up a great choice for anyone looking for a super lightweight and small camper.

The Aliner Scout Lite is also very easy and quick to set up, as the ceiling and walls simply lock into place once lifted into position, which can easily be accomplished by one person in just a few minutes.

One major drawback of the Aliner Scout Lite though is its more limited sleeping capacity compared to more traditional pop-ups , as the A-frame design doesn’t allow for fold-out bunks, which greatly reduces the number of campers that can sleep inside the pop-up.

So if you have a larger family or need to sleep a lot of campers, the Aliner Scout Lite is not going to be a good fit for you.

For more information on the Aliner Scout Lite, check out Aliner’s website by clicking here .

7. Coachmen Clipper 12.0 TD Max

  • Average Cost :  $18,000
  • Closed Length :  17 Feet 5 Inches
  • Open Length :  17 Feet 5 Inches
  • Dry Weight :  2,164 Pounds
  • Bathroom :  Thetford Porta Potti

The Coachmen Clipper 12.0 TD Max is the big brother to the Coachmen Viking Express 9.0 TD featured earlier and is best suited for those who want additional interior space, additional sleeping capacity, and more interior comfort features.

As the Coachmen Clipper 12.0 TD Max is more than 2 feet longer and 2 and a half feet wider compared to the Coachmen Viking Express 9.0 TD.

Finally, the Clipper 12.0 TD Max also has several upgrades not available on the Viking Express 9.0 TD, including a full-featured kitchenette with a two-burner propane stove, kitchen sink, and a mini-fridge.

  • Closed Length :  12 Feet 10 Inches
  • Open Length :  12 Feet 10 Inches

Thanks to its built-in electrical system, external water system, and pre-wired solar panel inlet.

But all this boondocking and dry camping capability doesn’t come cheap though.

As this camper is one of the most expensive pop-ups on this list, with a starting price of $20,546.

  • Average Cost :  $22,000
  • Closed Length :  17 Feet 2 Inches
  • Dry Weight :  2,380 Pounds

While the Opus OP Lite is definitely on the more expensive side, when it comes to small pop-up campers, there is truly nothing else like it , as it uses air inflation technology for its setup .

Allowing you to set up the camper in less than 90 seconds, with just the push of a button .

Thanks to its onboard 12V electric air compressor and “air beams” that provide structure to the pop-up.

Making the Opus OP Lite one of the easiest and fastest pop-ups to set up and take down .

It’s not just the one-of-a-kind air inflation technology that makes this trailer so great though, as it’s also loaded with off-grid and off-road features.

Making this camper the ideal choice for those who love to get off the beaten path and boondock for extended periods.

Designed to thrive in the wild, its 12V power system, controlled via an intuitive panel, and a robust 100 amp hour battery ensure sustained off-grid power. Which is further enhanced by the pop-up solar port to keep the battery topped off.

While the 20-pound propane tank and 20-gallon freshwater tank with a 12V pump further increase self-sufficiency.

All-terrain tires, shock-absorbing suspension, rock guards, and underbody armor also equip the Opus OP Lite for the toughest terrains.

Allowing you to camp in the most remote locations, including National Forestry Land or BLM land.

How Much Does a Small Pop-Up Camper Weigh?

Aliner Hard-sided Pop-up Camper Parked at a Campsite

The dry weight of a small pop-up camper usually falls between 1,000 and 2,500 pounds, depending on its design, size, and features.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that the dry weight of a pop-up is not the best indicator of its true weight , as this only indicates how much it weighs from the manufacturer with nothing in it.

To get a better idea of the true weight of a small pop-up camper, you need to account for the additional weight loaded into the pop-up from camping gear and supplies, by adding at least 500 pounds to its dry weight .

What is the Smallest Pop-Up Camper?

The smallest pop-up camper is the Sylvansport Go Camper, which has a dry weight of only 840 pounds and an overall length of just 11 feet 10 inches.

This allows the Go Camper to be pulled by a wide variety of vehicles, including most SUVs and even some cars.

What is the Smallest Pop-Up Camper with a Bathroom?

The smallest pop-up camper with a bathroom depends largely on what your definition of one is.

For example, several small pop-up campers offer a porta-potty as either an optional or standard feature.

But does this constitute a bathroom?

Or does the pop-up need to have a full two-piece wet bath with an indoor shower and a toilet for it to have a bathroom?

To provide a more thorough answer to this question, we’ve provided the smallest pop-up camper with a toilet below as well as the smallest pop-up camper with a two-piece wet bath.

The smallest pop-up camper that offers a toilet is the Coachmen Viking Express 9.0 TD, which has an optional free-standing Thetford Porta Potti, an overall length of 14 feet 2 inches, and a dry weight of 1,418 pounds.

The smallest pop-up camper that offers a full two-piece wet bath is the Forest River Rockwood Freedom 2318G, which has an optional combined shower and toilet , an exterior open length of 23 feet 11 inches, and a dry weight of 2,439 pounds.

Can a Honda CR-V Pull a Pop-Up Camper?

Red Honda CR-V Parked on a Roadside with a Backdrop of a Mountain Range and Desert Scenery, Including a Tall Saguaro Cactus

Due to the limited 1,500-pound max tow capacity of the Honda CR-V , there are very few pop-up campers it can tow , as most pop-ups will have weights that exceed the CR-V’s max tow capacity.

However, there are a few ultra-lightweight pop-ups that the Honda CR-V can technically tow.

But you need to be very careful about how much weight you load into these ultra-lightweight pop-ups if you plan to tow them with a CR-V.

As you should ideally always be observing the “ 80 Rule ” when towing, by never exceeding 80% of the tow vehicle’s max tow capacity.

To provide some towing cushion and to prevent excessive wear and tear on the tow vehicle.

How Weight Affects Towing

The weight of a pop-up camper significantly impacts the towing experience.

Lighter campers are easier to tow, reduce fuel consumption, and cause less wear and tear on the towing vehicle.

However, it’s essential to ensure the tow vehicle’s towing capacity is higher than the camper’s total weight when loaded with gear and supplies.

Importance of Choosing the Right Camper for Your Vehicle

Choosing a camper that suits your vehicle’s towing capacity is crucial.

Overloading a vehicle can lead to poor handling, increased stopping distances, and even mechanical problems.

It’s important to check your vehicle’s owner’s manual or consult with a professional to determine the maximum towing capacity before selecting a pop-up camper .

What camper is under 1500 lbs?

These compact campers are ideal for those who prefer simplicity and mobility without compromising on essential amenities.

Is there a pop-up camper with a toilet?

While not all pop-up campers come equipped with toilets, some do offer this convenience.

However, it’s important to note that the toilets in these campers are often small porta-potties that are stowed away under the bed or sink.

If having a toilet is a priority for you, it’s recommended to research specific models that offer this feature, such as the Sportsmen Classic 130RB by KZ-RV mentioned earlier.

What is the average weight of a pop-up camper?

The average weight of a pop-up camper can vary depending on its size and features. However, pop-up campers are known for being some of the lightest RVs on the market, with many weighing less than 3,000 pounds.

This makes them an ideal choice for those with smaller tow vehicles, such as compact trucks and small SUVs.

8 Best Travel Trailers Under 1500 lbs (2022) Video Tours + Pics

Bigger isn’t always better. That’s definitely the case with vaccine needles, kidney stones, and the number on the bills you get in the mail. 😲 But it’s also true with travel trailers and RVs. You can have some pretty big adventures in small travel trailers under 1500 lbs.

So let’s have a quick look at some of the best lightweight camper options under 1500 lbs that you can tow with just about any vehicle. Plus, you’ll get a bunch of other tips that’ll help you choose the right tiny trailer for your outdoor adventures.

Table of Contents

Why Choose a Camper That’s Less Than 1,500 Pounds?

Here are a few reasons.

  • Budget-friendly: Yup, they cost less all-around — less to buy, less to tow, less to maintain.
  • Easy to tow: With a short sub-1500-lb trailer, you’re less likely to damage your towing vehicle, cut a turn too tight and take out a mailbox, or back into a picnic table. And since they’re so light, just about anything that’s bigger than a compact car can tow one.
  • Easy to store: Travel trailers under 1500 lbs aren’t as long and are often shorter (height-wise). That makes them super easy to store (unlike a giant 35-foot 5th wheel).
  • Go more places: If you like to head off the beaten path, you’re better off with a small travel trailer. You can make tighter turns, tackle rougher trails, and head up steeper inclines.

What Vehicles Can Tow a 1,500-lb Camper?

Before purchasing even a small travel trailer under 1500 lbs, it’s important to double-check the tow ratings of your vehicle as well as the weight capacities of the camper. As you check those specs you’ll probably run into terms like these.

UVW: Unloaded Vehicle Weight

Or “dry weight”. This is the weight of an unloaded travel trailer. So if your vehicle can tow 1,500 pounds, look for a camper with a dry weight of LESS than 1,500 pounds.

Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC)

The CCC or cargo-carrying capacity is the maximum amount of additional weight your trailer can handle.

GVWR: Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

This is the maximum total weight (UVW + CCC).

So if the trailer you’re looking at has a UVW of 1,250 pounds, a GVWR of 1,475 lbs and your vehicle can tow 1,500 pounds…IT’S A WINNER! 🎉👏

Some Vehicles that Can Tow a 1,500-lb Trailer

This isn’t an exhaustive list, but here are a few small SUVs and crossovers that can tow a 1,500-pound camper. Basically, you want to look for at least a mid-size crossover with a powerful 4-cylinder engine or a standard 6-cylinder.

*Important: Always double-check your vehicle’s manual. Towing capacity can vary a lot depending on your vehicle’s trim, AWD or FWD, engine, etc.

Did you double-check your vehicle tow ratings? Can it tow more than 1,500 pounds? Then maybe you should head over to one of these articles:

8 of the Best Ultra-Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 1,500 lbs

Ok, so let’s have a look at 8 of the best travel trailers under 1,500 lbs that should be at the top of your list.

Forest River Flagstaff E-PRO E12RK

If you want a small camper but can’t settle for a tiny teardrop.

DRY WEIGHT: 1,252 lbs

Forest River Flagstaff E-PRO E12RK super light camper

Source: Forest River

Logistically, this trailer is similar to a teardrop. It’s got an interior sleeping area that’s just big enough for a bed and a rear hatch that flips up for access to an outside kitchen. And with a UVW of well under 1,500 pounds (1,252 to be exact), this is guy is light!

However, the E12RK definitely feels more like a normal travel trailer and less like a teardrop. It’s got a rectangular shape that helps maximize the space. There’s an optional 7’ awning that opens up on one side and a TV inside.

And the outside kitchen is actually quite impressive for a tiny trailer. It comes with a refrigerator, microwave, sink, and griddle. Plus, just like a normal camper, it’s got water and electric hookups.

The extra ground clearance and all-terrain tires also make this little guy a nice option for exploring out-of-the-way areas or boondocking off the grid.

Check out the E12RK Video Tour .

TAXA Tigermoth

Light, tough, fabulously functional.

DRY WEIGHT: 1,310 lbs (with just standard features)

TAXA Tigermoth lightweight pop up trailer good for offroading

Source: TAXA Outdoors

TAXA definitely broke the mold with their off-road habitats. Most look more like a moon lander than a travel trailer. But once you get a closer look you can appreciate how intelligent the design is.

The Tigermoth is one of their smaller trailers. With just the standard features you get a rugged travel trailer under 1,500 lbs that can handle just about any terrain. It can sleep two people in a multi-purpose area that converts into bench seating with a small table. There’s a slide-out field kitchen, a 30-amp electric hookup, and tons of storage areas for strapping on additional gear.

Plus, there are some pretty cool available options like a 5000 BTU AC unit, an awning and mosquito netting, and even a 3-person rooftop tent ! Just watch the total weight if you start adding on a bunch of accessories — you can quickly go over 1,500-lbs.

With its rugged practicality, the Tigermoth is a great ultra-lightweight trailer to take on off-grid road trips and overlanding adventures.

Check out the TAXA Tigermoth walk-around video.

The Timberleaf Pika is a teardrop trailer that comes in well under 1,500 pounds. That makes it a great option for those who want the freedom to trick it out with all the bells and whistles without going over their vehicle’s max towing capacity.

The base version is simple, yet practical and well-built. And one cool standard feature on most of the Timberleaf trailers is a skylight with a shade. That’s a really nice feature for letting in tons of extra light and not feeling so claustrophobic in the teardrop cabin.

Then, as you go through the build options, it’s really easy to upgrade the Pika and basically build one that has exactly the features you need.

You can opt for an all-road or off-road package with beefier tires, a more rugged suspension, and extra ground clearance. Select from different shelving and storage options, and upgraded mattress, 12V Dometic fridge, heater, roof rack, and solar packages.

Go Little Guy MyPod

Pretty much the smallest travel trailer out there.

DRY WEIGHT: 760 lbs!!!

Go Little Guy MyPod micro camper

Source: Go Little Guy

Nope, it’s not a spaceship. Although I have to say, it looks oddly similar to the SpaceX Dragon capsule. 🤔🤔🤔

The MyPod is truly a tiny travel trailer. I mean it’s only 760 lbs…basically half of 1,500! You could tow this with a lawnmower 🤣.

While it does have some pretty cool features like A/C, electric hookup, TV, roof fan, and a cargo rack, it lacks some of the features you normally see on small teardrops. There’s no galley, no freshwater tank, and no space for a cooler.

But if you’re under 6-feet, are basically just looking for a place to sleep, and have a tiny towing vehicle, the MyPod is for you.

Check out the MyPod tour from Matt’s RV Reviews .

InTech Flyer Pursue

A lightweight adventure trailer that’s ready for mods and add-ons.

DRY WEIGHT: 1,115 – 1,595 depending on options

InTech Flyer Pursue modifiable durablelightweight camper

Source: InTech

If you want to go exploring and need a versatile camper under 1,500 lbs that can keep up, the Flyer Pursue is a nice pick. It’s got a fully welded frame that can handle rough roads that would make other RVs blow apart.

It’s got a large slide-out galley with a 50-quart 12v fridge/freezer. The interior is really spacious thanks to the boxy shape. And instead of just side doors like you find on most teardrops, the Flyer Pursue has large rear doors so you can easily load extra camping gear into the multi-purpose cabin.

Plus, there are tons of add-ons and mods that make it even more functional — awnings, roof top tents, a 2” hitch receiver for extra cargo carrying capacity, A/C and heat, and even an add-a-room tent.

Watch the InTech Flyer Pursue full video tour .

Coachmen Clipper 9.0TD

A hybrid pop-up/teardrop that’s just under 1,500 lbs

DRY WEIGHT: 1,418 lbs

Coachmen Clipper 9.0TD hybrid pop up teardrop lightweight travel trailer

Source: Coachmen

If a pop-up and a teardrop had a love child, it would be the Clipper 9.0. And you know what…it kinda works! You’ve got the lightweight and low profile of the teardrop-like shape when it’s all folded up. Then the back pops up and BAM! You’ve got standing headroom!

Plus, there are some nice available options like a 13,500 BTU air conditioner, a cargo system, and a portable camping toilet ! Just keep in mind that since the UVW is already almost 1,500 pounds, so any extra options will quickly push it over that.

Watch the Clipper 9.0 video tour from Matt’s RV Reviews.

Scamp 13 Standard

One of the roomiest travel trailers under 1500 lbs.

DRY WEIGHT: 1200-1500 for the standard models

Scamp 13 Standard roomy lightweight for families

Source: Scamp

Finally, a camper under 1,500 lbs that you can actually stand up in! YES!

The Scamps are a very special kind of travel trailer. If you’re looking for luxurious refinement, they’re definitely not for you. Honestly, the interiors in the 13’ Standard models are a little dated.

But honestly, you can’t complain when you get standing headroom, an interior kitchen, and sleeping room for up to four people… all in a trailer that weighs as little as 1,200 pounds.

Check out this Scamp 13 video tour .

Woohoo! You did it, you made it to the end of the list! Maybe you have a few more questions…

Who Makes the Best Ultra-Light Travel Trailers?

It all depends on what type of trailer you’re looking for. You could go with one of the mainstream RV companies like Coachmen or Forest River. You can usually find these in stock at dealers and can probably get a good deal. However, they don’t always make the best use of space and the build quality isn’t always up to par with some of the smaller guys that hand-craft their trailers one by one.

If you’re looking for a trailer that makes the best use of space, has plenty of options for customization, and has top-notch build quality, then go with a smaller company like Timberleaf or Taxa.

What is Better – Fiberglass or Aluminum Lightweight Travel Trailers?

They each have their pros and cons. Fiberglass campers, like the Scamp, tend to be more durable, have less wind resistance, and better insulation. Aluminum siding on the other hand tends to be a little lighter and less expensive.

How Much Can I Safely Tow?

Check your vehicle’s owner manual or look it up on a towing capacity database . Then just double check your hitch specifications and the total weight of your trailer and any cargo you loaded into it.

Which Travel Trailer Under 1500 Is Right For Your Next Adventure?

Are you gonna go with the comfortable features of the nuCamp Tag? Or maybe the versatility of the InTech Flyer Pursue? Whatever lightweight camper under 1500 pounds you choose (or even if you just stick with a tent 😜), just make sure to get out there and enjoy the great outdoors!

“So if the trailer you’re looking at has a UVW of 1,250 pounds, a GVWR of 1,475 lbs and your vehicle can tow 1,500 pounds…IT’S A WINNER!”

Disagree . . . To tow with electric trailer breaks my Kia Sportage EX can tow 2K. To SAFELY tow any travel trailer one should consider towing 75-80% of the GVWR, not to mention the possible wear and tear on an engine if you don’t.

Here are four of the best lightweight travel trailers under 1,500 pounds.

The Pika can go just about anywhere

  • Dry weight: 900 lbs

The Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro 12RK brings the water

This gives you enough water storage for activities like washing your dishes and hands without hauling water along.

The NuCamp Tag is a fully customizable travel trailer

  • 2021 model year base price: $19,527 (from RV USA )

Don’t forget the weight

When looking for a lightweight travel trailer under 1,500 pounds, it is very important to remember that the weight listed in the specifications is the base unloaded weight. This weight does not include the weight added by luggage, equipment, or water. It also does not include any customized extras or add-on accessories. All of these things will affect the final loaded weight. You also need to be mindful of the towing capacity of your vehicle and then buy your travel trailer accordingly, with the final loaded weight in mind. However, most importantly, have fun on your future RV adventures.

10 Best Lightweight Travel Trailers For 2023

' src=

  • RV Trailers and Motorhomes

The Rove Lite small travel trailer. (Image: travelliterv.com)[/caption]

Consider the GVWR (not the UVW)

Many RV manufacturers tout the UVW (unloaded vehicle weight) of their trailers. But adding cargo like fresh water, propane tank(s), food, clothing, bicycles, and other camping equipment to the trailer can add hundreds of pounds to that UVW number.

GVWR is the weight to know when buying a trailer for a lightweight truck or passenger car tow vehicle.

Knowing the GVWR of small campers is the key to safe towing on road or while off-the-grid camping. Now, let’s dive into our list of the best lightweight travel trailers for 2023.

The 10 Best Lightweight Travel Trailers (Under 6,000 Pounds GVWR)

Our top small travel trailers for 2023 are listed in order by cost in US dollars, from least expensive to most expensive.

Your next best option in choosing a travel trailer under 1800 lbs is Intech luna. Intech has many other models but this is the one that has least weight among others. The luna Intech weighs between 1770 to 1800 lbs.

There are 2 colors that you can choose from, silver and space blue. In luna Intech there are 3 different packages that you can select. These are as below,

The main difference in these is the decals. Base model is the sport decal, rover is the rugged and the platinum is elegant decals.

Keeping the travel trailer light

Getting a light weight trailer can be great but its the dry weight tat you see which means its without all your belonging and extra items you would need while camping.

Most people end up putting in stuff that increases the weight of the RV and the advantage that you get with low weight diminishes. Thus, its important that you try few things that will keep your RV under that weight. Here are few things you can do to reduce the travel trailer weight.

  • Pack only those items that you will need while camping.
  • Have printed checklist, with this you can easily avoid unused things.
  • Do not carry toys like bikes or other heavy items you wont need.
  • Make use of space wisely. Get multiple use items.
  • Organize the camper to make better use of space.
  • Make use of solar panels instead of heavy generator or even going for multiple propane tanks.
  • Water can be heavy too. Make sure you get only what you need.
  • Do not load your RV with extra furniture. Heavy furniture is the prime reason why some RVs weigh much.

Rv Weight terms you should know

With all the weight terms it can get confusing. You need to know about the weight that is being advertised and the weight that you will be towing behind the car, is going to be different.

So, make no mistake and be sure about all the terms. Your car will be rated to tow certain weight and you cannot go beyond that. Here are some of the terms that I used while discussing the best super lite travel trailer options.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating ( GVWR ) : This is the parameter that is mostly talked about. This is not what the RV weighs when you buy it. Its not even the actual weight of the RV when you go for camping with all the items. Its a rating that you should not exceed when all the items are packed. And this, includes even the passengers, water and all the other belonging in the RV.

Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW) : As the term suggests “unloaded”, meaning the weight without loading any extra belongings. Its the weight that you would see at the dealer. It is also called as dry weight of the RV.

Cargo carrying capacity (CCCC): The cargo is the amount of extra weight you can put on the travel trailer. This will include all the kitchen items, or extra water or accessories.

Gross combination Weight rating (GCWR) : Your car and the travel trailer will have separate GVWR but GCWR is for both combined. So, when you are towing a trailer behind the car this is the rating that is not to be exceeded. This includes the trailer weight, cargo and everything else that is being towed.

Trailer sway

Towing a travel trailer or any other RV behind a car or truck is always challenging. This can be hard for those who are doing it for the first time or new at it.

Trailer swaying is something that you should be aware of and that is why understanding weights is so important.

So, how do you make sure the trailer wont sway? A less than 1800 lbs or 2000 lbs is very less weight as compared to other big RVs but you still need to understand and make sure trailer wont sway. Here are some things you can do to prevent travel trailer sway.

  • Make sure there is minimum 10% weight on the tongue. If you heavy doubts or you are very new to towing then its recommended that you take your RV to a commercial weighing expert to make sure you are doing fine.
  • Travel trailer tire pressure need to be correct. Make sure the tires are inflated to the recommended pressure all the time.
  • An obvious one is to make sure you are not overloading the trailer. Make sure the weights are well within those limits.
  • You can also make use of sway control devices. Check out with the manufacturer or with the RV professional shop for such device.
  • Wind can be one factor that can induce a travel trailer sway. If you feel its windy then do not tow, just wait for the wind to slow down.
  • Do not tow very fast make sure your speed is well within what the manufacturer recommends. Even with 1800 lbs or 2000 lbs travel trailer the speed need to be limited.

Why go for light weight travel trailer

There are lot of people like you who sought after light travel trailers and there is a reason for that.

  • Towing behind a car or truck isn’t an easy job. More the weight more careful you need to be while towing.
  • More weight means reduced efficiency and thus obviously RVers who want a budget RV lifestyle look for low weighing RVs.
  • Not all car’s or truck’s can tow high weighing trailers. If you own a car then you want an RV to be within its limits and no where close to its upper limit.

Owning a small travel trailer weighing less than 2000 lbs or so can be much comforting for you as a driver. There have been tremendous changes in RV industry in past many years and as a result we have numerous companies that make these tiny little campers.

Not only do they weigh less but also provide basic features that one would look for and that too at reasonable price. If you don’t want to spend on brand new one then you can buy an used one at much less price or even try renting any of these on RV renting sites like outdoorsy or RVshare.

Things To Consider When Purchasing a Travel Trailer Under 3,500 lbs?

If you are considering purchasing a Travel Trailer under 3,500 lbs, we recommend two courses of action.

  • If you have never owned a small camper before we recommend that you rent one before you buy one. Susan and I did this, and it worked out great for us. We rented a Class C RV for a week and by the end of that week, we knew everything we liked — and didn’t like about that RV. This helped us to purchase the perfect RV for us! And we recommend you “try before you buy” a travel trailer too! It could save you thousands!
  • If you are ready to purchase a travel trailer — or any RV — we highly recommend that you use GoRollick to find the best local pricing from dealers near you on new or used RVs!

15 Best Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 3,500 lb

Some of these travel trailers under 3500 lbs are truly unique and exciting additions to an already massive market.

With the growing popularity of these economical, versatile, and easy-to-tow travel trailers, you can stake out your next adventure in style and leisure while operating on a smaller footprint.

1. Airstream Basecamp

Airstream Basecamp Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

Our Pros and Cons

✅ Airstream maintains its well-known, incredible aesthetic on the inside as well as out

⛔ Off-road packages are not much of an off-road upgrade, especially with sensitive components

  • Length: 16′ 2″
  • UVW: 2,650 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,500 lbs
  • CCC: 850 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 410 lbs

Airstream took its old, classical aesthetic and flipped it around on its head with the Airstream Basecamp . Relaying their classical aluminum exteriors to the interiors is a joy to look at, if you dig shiny walls and a clean, metallic look. The massive, panoramic windows on the front are a huge plus, especially if you take it off-road and find some incredible scenery.

This RV packs everything you need for going off-grid, though you may want to upgrade the underbelly with something a little more resilient to off-road adventures. A standard wet bath, two-burner stove, dining area, bed, counter space, and storage are all packed into a 16-footer.

2. r-pod 171C

r-pod 171C Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Lightweight, highly water-resistant Azdel walls that are lightweight and durable

⛔ Aftermarket options necessary to run the A/C boondocking or off-grid

  • Length: 19′
  • UVW: 2,449 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,725 lbs
  • CCC: 2,276 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 325 lbs

Forest River took the classical, DIY teardrop exterior aesthetic and amped it up a notch with their r-pods , which are really just giant teardrops with more of the features on the inside rather than the outside.

The bathroom is a wet bath, but it’s large enough that you don’t have to sit on your toilet to shower.

The refrigerator is large for the size of the camper, with a large, convertible dinette and a sideways queen bed on the opposite end.

Since r-pods went with the Azdel walls, they are far more durable and long-lasting, with less preventative maintenance throughout the seasons.

3. Rockwood Geo Pro G15RD

Rockwood Geo Pro G15RD Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Dexter Torflex Torsion Axle and indie suspension is standard (Nice!)

⛔ Known for having a loud air conditioner that resounds throughout the RV

  • UVW: 2,883 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,325 lbs
  • CCC: 1,442 lbs

Another Forest River entry on our list is the Rockwood Geo Pro, which sounds pretty bad to the bone for a camper title.

This particular model features a sideways bunk house in the rear and a convertible U-dinette, both of which sleep up to four. It’s an excellent option for short-term family adventures, whether you’re bringing the kids or rocking some big dogs.

The U-dinette fits square against the bunks, with the remainder of the kitchen appliances and furniture continuing with the flow of the U-shape around the RV.

This makes for more room in the center, where all the day-to-day work and activities take place. It’s a smooth idea that really works, keeping you from feeling constrained when indoors for long periods.

4. Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 12FBX

Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 12FBX Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Includes an AlphaPly roof membrane with gutters for catching rainwater

⛔ No bathroom sink

  • Length: 18′ 6″
  • UVW: 2,839 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,910 lbs
  • CCC: 1,071 lbs

The Palomino Puma Ultra-Lite 12 FBX may carry the Puma name, but it has the shape and versatility of a bulldog. It’s lightweight, yet wide enough and long enough to accommodate all the features we expect in travel trailers under 3500lbs these days.

It’s the tiny things that count and the lengthy design of the dinette, sideways queen, and corner bathroom all work to maximize the central living space.

This Puma does it a little differently than the previous entry, but it accomplishes the same level of space and comfort where it doesn’t seem like there should be any.

5. Scamp 13

Scamp 13 Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Multiple floorplans with Standard and Deluxe additions to boot

⛔ Air conditioner isn’t standard

  • Length: 13′
  • GVWR: 1,500 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 150 lbs

The tried and true Scamp 13 is the quintessential travel trailer under 3500lbs. Scamp has been around for a long time and they’re known for constructing fiberglass behemoths writ small, that can take on just about anything you throw at them.

The Scamp 13 features more than one floor plan, with the addition of standard and deluxe models, depending on how bougie you want to get.

The designs are solid and comfortable, and feature the level of customization you want for either long-term use or short and sweet vacations.

6. inTech Sol Eclipse

inTech Sol Eclipse Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Large amount of kitchen space for its size

⛔ No dedicated bed, like the Horizon

  • Length: 17′
  • UVW: 2,775 lbs
  • CCC: 770 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 445 lbs

The inTech Sol Eclipse is one of the most exciting and off-grid-ready travel trailers under 3500lbs on the market. There are multiple models under the inTech lineup, with the Eclipse being one of the more popular variations.

Interior space is maximized and simplified, leaving plenty of room for you to make it your own.

The 32-gallon black and gray water tanks, 35-A converter, Dexter torsion axles, all-aluminum triple tube cage frame, 28-gallon freshwater tank, panoramic windshield, and aggressive tread are all combined for the pinnacle in off-road and off-grid adventures. This is the travel trailer you want to pull when going well out into the boonies.

7. Jayco Jay Flight 195RB

Jayco Jay Flight 195RB - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Includes electric, self-adjusting brakes

⛔ A/C unit is known for being a little too loud

  • Length: 21′ 10″
  • UVW: 2,940 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,750 lbs
  • CCC: 810 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 270 lbs

This Jayco Jay Flight has the interior feel of an RV much larger than typical travel trailers under 3500lbs. The interior is designed with a corner bathroom, a walk-in wardrobe, and a parallel queen, the latter of which features plenty of room to move around.

As a lightweight travel trailer, that feeling of size is an impressive accomplishment. The bathroom is sizeable as well, though Jayco left out a sink next to the shower. It’s a dry bath as well, which is often hard to find in a travel trailer within this class.

8. Venture Sonic Lite SL150VRB

Venture Sonic Lite SL150VRB Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Panoramic automatic window is excellent if you like views and spring breezes

⛔ No dedicated sitting area for dining or entertainment

  • Length: 19′ 11″
  • UVW: 3,180 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,885 lbs
  • CCC: 705 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 480 lbs

This little camper features a massive rear bathroom, which takes up roughly 1/3 of the entire RV. However, the Venture Sonic doesn’t skimp on the remaining 2/3 either.

The remaining space is utilized very well, with a parallel Murphy bed (which features a free-standing table for dining), a two-burner stove, sink, and 8 ft³ fridge.

Thanks to the Murphy bed and lack of a traditional dinette, the space in the center of the camper is large and comfortable.

There’s also plenty of cabinetry and storage, with a passthrough on the exterior, a row of overhead cabinets over the stove, and another row of overhead cabinets over the bed.

9. Wildwood 164RBLE

Wildwood 164RBLE Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ AccessiBelly feature is amazing in terms of protection and accessibility for repair work

⛔ TV mount is at a harsh right angle, over the queen bed in the front

  • Length: 20′
  • UVW: 2,819 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,880 lbs
  • CCC: 1,061 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 380 lbs

One of the most attractive qualities of the Wildwood 164RBL E is the bright and cheery interior. Stepping inside is like stepping into a breath of fresh air, even if it’s not a very large travel trailer. As you can see in the above floorplan, a lot is going on inside as well.

The 11 ft³ fridge is a huge benefit, especially if you need the extra food for a lot of boondocking or going off-grid.

The bathroom takes up the back 1/5 of the RV, though there’s plenty of room to keep it a dry bath with a sink, toilet, and sizeable shower.

10. Travel Lite Rove Lite 16RB

Travel Lite Rove Lite 16RB Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Traditional travel trailer at a mind-blowing sub-2,000lbs

⛔ Black tank size is very underwhelming at 5 gallons

  • Length: 18′ 9″
  • UVW: 2,020 lbs
  • CCC: 1,480 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 154 lbs

Sometimes simple is better and, when it comes to travel trailers under 3500lbs, it’s often a good idea to simplify things. The Travel Lite Rove Lite 16RB is both simple and streamlined while retaining a full-featured RV status.

There are some interesting things to get used to in this model, and some that RVers may not like.

For instance, instead of cabinet doors, the Travel Lite features a strong mesh net across all the cabinet openings. There’s also a small black tank instead of a cartridge toilet, which means shorter periods away from home or a campground.

11. Safari Condo Alto 1723

Safari Condo Alto 1723 Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Nearly half the Safari Condo Alto is a wild array of windows

⛔ This is a very different aesthetic and may not be for everyone

  • Length: 17′ 3″
  • GVWR: 1,867 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: N/A

This is easily the most unique-looking RV on our travel trailers under 3500lbs list. The Safari Condo Alto is a window-full masterpiece. If you like to see everything around you while never stepping foot outside, this is the camper for you.

The lightweight frame, compact design, and interesting floorplans make this RV a lot of fun and an interesting choice for those looking at travel trailers in this class.

You can literally eat lunch underneath a driving rain, and this camper isn’t known for leaking either. There are limitations on storage and holding tanks, but this remains an excellent off-road adventure choice for single occupants, couples, and small families.

12. Coachmen Clipper 15CBH

Coachmen Clipper 15CBH Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Excellent interior space for travel trailers under 3500lbs

⛔ Lack of windows throughout, with the existing ones being fairly small

  • Length: 17′ 10″
  • UVW: 2,644 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,830 lbs
  • CCC: 1,186 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 330 lbs

Coachmen Clippers make for excellent travel trailers under 3500lbs. Unlike most of the other campers on our list, the floorspace on the Clipper is a sideways L-shape, like an elongated hallway that ends in a sizeable bathroom and a very large shower.

The bathroom occupies the corner space while the two bunkbeds take up the opposite corner. All of your typical kitchen amenities are present making this a very complete travel trailer under 3500lbs.

The dinette is a convertible bed with a large shelf above, maximizing the room in the RV while retaining some extra sleeping and storage space.

13. Little Guy Mini Max

Little Guy Mini Max Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Hydraulic life TV is a nice entertainment addition in this class of RV

⛔ No battery monitor

  • UVW: 2,406 lbs
  • CCC: 1,094 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 240 lbs

The Little Guy Mini Max is one of two campers on our list that approach the true teardrop form (the other is next on the list).

The Little Guy is known for its high-quality interiors, with attention to the finest details throughout. The light tans make for an excellent interior aesthetic and, despite its size, it features all of the major amenities of a traditional camper.

The wet bath is large enough to accommodate both the toilet and shower so as long as you’re not against wet baths it’s a great option.

The entire galley is in the front, which is an interesting change of pace. One of the things people really love about this camper is the number of hidden storage places scattered throughout. If you need to store it, there’s a place for it.

14. Aliner Ranger 12

Aliner Ranger 12 Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Very easy to set up as a hybrid pop-up camper

⛔ Dinette bed is not the most comfortable, an understandable lacking in a minimalist design

  • Length: 15″
  • UVW: 1,450 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,000 lbs
  • CCC: 1,550 lbs

The Aliner Ranger 12 is another of the teardrop-esque travel trailers under 3500lbs on our list of 15.

Its unique, triangular shape is definitely a conversation starter in any campground get-together. However, it’s more of a pop-up camper, in reality, than it is a teardrop.

The interesting triangular roof creates a spacey-feeling interior that other campers in this class struggle to achieve. However, as cool as it looks, you’ll have to go with an exterior shower or only camp at campgrounds where showers are available.

15. KZ Sportsman Classic 180RBT

KZ Sportsman Classic 180RBT Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Tent beds are well-built and maximize the living space within the travel trailer

⛔ Storage options could be better

  • Length: 21′ 9″
  • UVW: 3,370 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,500 lbs
  • CCC: 1,130 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 360 lbs
  • Sleeps: 4 to 6

Last on our list of travel trailers under 3500lbs is the KZ Sports man Classic 180RBT. Unlike the other 14, this RV saves space, and expands it, in an entirely different way, by utilizing fold-out tents for beds. Not only does this save space, but it also opens up the interior to a higher sleeping count.

Thanks to three fold-outs, the interior space is enormous for a travel trailer this size. There’s a full, corner dry bath, a sizeable dinette across from a long bench seat, a fridge, a pantry, and a full kitchen amenity range on opposing walls.

There are also plenty of storage options, though this RV uses a large storage door on the exterior, rather than passthrough storage.

Should I Buy an Extended Warranty for My Travel Trailer?

Yes — but not from a dealership! Unfortunately, your odds of suffering a major mechanical breakdown go up with every passing year. Based on RV Warranty claims records, more than 3 out of every 10 RVs will need major repairs in only their second year on the road.

This skyrockets to 8 out of 10 in their fifth year, and virtually ALL of them in their eighth year! Today’s RVs are increasingly more complex, and with more things to go wrong, the need to protect your investment is more important than ever.

Our RV Warranty plans allow you to change your mind! If you’re looking to sell your RV to a private party, you can absolutely transfer the policy to the new owner. Additionally, if you are trading in your RV, you can cancel your policy for a pro-rated refund.

We bought a warranty through Wholesale Warranties for several reasons:

  • We can cancel the warranty at any time and get a pro-rated refund
  • We can transfer the warranty to the new owner if we decide to sell our RV
  • There are no mileage caps on our policy
  • We can use repair shops all across the country
  • We can use a mobile repair company right at our campsite
  • The price is way better than most dealerships
  • We could finance the cost of the warranty
  • With parts and labor prices increasing all the time, we have peace of mind

You owe it to yourself to at least check out a warranty and get a free quote to see if it is right for you. It just takes a few minutes, and you will learn a ton about protecting your investment. We only recommend products we use ourselves, and we highly recommend you get a free quote from Wholesale Warranties .

Are Travel Trailers Under 3500lbs Big Enough For Families?

Some of them are, depending on your definition of family size. Some travel trailers under 3500 lbs will accommodate a single-child family, while some will accommodate two. If they are particularly energetic and rambunctious, it may take a class-A motorhome to accommodate them.

It’s safe to say that maybe one or none are fit for extremely long-term family use. Homeschooling kids in an Aliner Ranger 12, which will sleep up to 4, is doable but not the most envious task in the world.

If it works for you, then by all means. At the end of the day, the thing that works and works well is what you should go for.

Final Thoughts About Travel Trailers Under 3500lbs

Travel trailers under 3500 lbs are extremely versatile and much easier to tow. With the improving technologies and truly unique offerings on the market, they’re exciting for off-grid living, off-roading, regular camping, boondocking, and more.

If you’re in the market for a small, economical travel trailer, these 15 travel trailers should be high on your list.

Most extended warranties start after the regular warranty ends BUT the prorated amount includes the time under the regular warranty. Our original warranty was for 12 months and we got another 12 month extended warranty. After a year we traded for a larger trailer and only got 1/2 of the cost of our extended warranty back, even though it wasn’t going to kick in for another few weeks.

Which of these under 3500 lbs come insulated for cold temperatures 5,500 ft above sealevel? I only have a Subaru Outback turbo that can haul up to 3,500 lbs

I have been looking for an ultra lite trailer under 3500lbs that I can tow with my Nissan Frontier. I would prefer one with bunks and no bed. Also I would like a slide out. Double axle would be great also, but that may be asking for too much.

Good information for one looking for a small trailer. With all of my research, for one looking for a light trailer, the LANCE 1475 is a good one deserving of review. it’s more $$$$ than the afore mentioned unit’s, but it’s really nice.

Good to very good quality used 3500 pounds trailer for a 2018 Chevy Equinox diesel to pull well over the Rockies?

Hey Mike, good article. Did you come across Jayco? …2 full years of warranty. Full shower & tub. This is my third Jayco and I’m happy. I’m cruising in a Jayco Jay flight SLX Baja Edition, 145RB. Dan

Ps: I keep my weight down so I can pull with my Jeep. If I ever get out of a Jeep and into a truck, I’ll keep this article in mind. Thanks.

This was a great grouping of nice smaller trailers! The size is just what an older couple like my husband and I are drawn to. The biggest surprise was the Puma ultra light. It didn’t really stand out from the exterior, but the interior was surprisingly good looking and very functional. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen one before. The Casita, Oliver and Nest are also stunners IMO, but I bet you will have to put your name on a waiting list to get one. I recently camped next to a young couple and their dogs staying in a Wolf Pup that was probably even smaller than the 16FQ and it had a rear entry. It had the same big picture window on the passenger side though. That seems like a really great detail to carry across their floor plans. Thank you for the ‘eye candy’. Happy Travels from Michigan
