A bus trip down from Melbourne to Phillips Island to see the penguins march across the beach. En route our tour took us to an animal reserve where we could commune with koalas, kangaroos, dingoes, etc. At night fall we arrived at the beach with anticipation to see the penguins arrive from the ocean to their hovels on land. It was an awesome sight to see the critters float in off an ocean wave, waddle across the beach and disappear into the land vegetation. Its definitely a must see.
We selected aat kings for this trip as they offered a half day excursion. This suited us as we had already been on trips that covered the type of visits that he whole day trip offered. The trip was well organised and the driver, Chris, was informative without being over the top. The trip gave us some wonderful memories of the views on Phillip Island and,of course, the wild penguins. Going is a must particularly for visitors from the northern hemisphere.
Phillip Island and Penguin Parade - A Must. We went with AAT King on their Phillip Island Penguin Parade trip and have no complaints. Maru Koala and Animal Park provides an opportunity to see some of Australia's "signature" wildlife up close. So kangaroos, koala, emus, dingos and tasmanian devils. Feeding the kangeroos is fun. We caught an interesting display of sheep shearing. The journey gives a flavour of both the inland and coast of Phillip Island. We stopped off for a stroll on a stunning beach and also had a longer stop at Cowes. Then on to the highlight. The evening penguin parade, an experience not to be missed. Tip: Pay the extra for penguin parade plus; it gets you right up close and can follow the little chaps up into the dunes on the board walk.

Summer - Breeding Season

Bull seals return to Seal Rocks. Territorial behavior and fighting amongst mature bulls is a common sight. Adult female seals give birth to one pup, peaking around mid December with up to 4000 pups being born here. Newborn learn to swim in rock pools and their bleating can be heard loud and clear as the pups call out for their mothers. Juveniles now practicing their hunting and dive moves, sometimes clearing the water as they leap out of the water!

Autumn at Seal Rocks

Seal pups are spending a lot of time swimming, diving and practicing prey-chasing, although still staying in groups for safety. As the pups explore their environment they can be seen to ‘play’ with seaweed, learning to use their teeth to catch and tear prey. The pups’ curiosity to boats is evident as they confidently approach in large pods within meters of the boat! Cows stay away for longer in search of food, often leaving their pups on the rocks for up to 10 days. Moulting begins, and while seals can still go to sea and feed during their moult, but they spend a lot of time resting ashore, grunting and scratching. Pups have their first moult too, changing their distinctive black fur for a brown-silver coat.

Winter at Seal Rocks

Seal pups are weaning off from their mother’s milk and learning to fish for themselves. A seal’s main diet includes small fish such as pilchards and leatherjackets, as well cephalopods (squid, octopus, and cuttlefish).

Foraging areas vary greatly between juveniles, cows and bulls, with some bulls going as far as the edge of the continental shelf in search of their prey.

Cows and juveniles tend to forage closer to their colony, regularly seen travelling individually or small pods near the Phillip Island coast.

Springtime at Seal Rocks

Bull (male) seals start arriving and claiming territory, causing audible and sometimes violent fights between competing males. After they have claimed their territory they will herd females into their area for breeding.

Females embark on long foraging journeys because now their pups can take care of themselves, and the mothers need to get stronger before giving birth.

Traveler Reviews

I cant recommend this tour highly enough. I asked a friend to recommend one thing to do with limited time in Moscow and he said, check out the metro. I did one better, and went on this individual tour yesterday with my very well informed guide, Alina. She took me to a number of stations and explained the history, politics and meanings behind the different sculpures and artworks in a way that made the whole experience far more meaningful than getting on and off the metro without guidance would have done. I had a really fantastic time and was thoroughly impressed. To top it all off, we had lunch and Alina suggested some great things for me to do, even whatsapping me maps, suggestions, and internet links. Today she followed up by messaging me to ask how my day was going and if I had any questions about the city, or recommendations for places to eat, etc. A great tour, a lovely guide and a fantastic experience. I couldnt recommend this tour, or Alina, any more highly. Fantastic!

Dear Friends,

My son and myself visited Moscow for a holiday in April 2018. And we had selected this fantastic tour. Our Guide Mrs. Julia came sharp at 10.00 AM even though she was not feeling well and had sore throat. Thereafter she took us to many Metro stations. Though I had already visited Moscow last year and seen all these stations, she gave phenomenal historic background and many interesting facts. She was almost fluent in English and and a good knowledge of Russian Culture, food and many other things. Overall we enjoyed thoroughly and I will highly recommend this tour with Julia if possible. Truly amazing person. And even more amazing tour.

Our Tour booked for 26 December 2017 was absolutely amazing. Our guide Julia picked us up from our Hotel in St Peterburg on time in a luxury minivan. Thanks to Julia we were able to see most of the tourist attractions that day. She went out of her way for us to make our day special. She had a vast knowledge of all the places that we visited. Lunch was special in a typical Russian restaurant with food from the region. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Picked up in the hotel lobby by our guide, Lylie, who then walked us to the closest Metro. She walked/trained us to 13 different stations and then explained the history of the metro and the significance of the decor in each station. We had plenty of time to photo, view the decor, watch and ride the trains and observe the people coming and going with their daily affairs. The art work/mosaics/sculptures/stained glass/ marble all had a role to play in presenting the history of communist Russia. The Russian metro well deserves the title of the most interesting and outstanding metro in the world. Lylie then took us to lunch, advised us on menu choices and their significance in the Russian culture and was very happy answering our questions on how the younger generation is responding to the new Russia. We had an outstanding guide, a fantastic experience and would highly recommend this tour over and above other tours which merely include a visit to a small number of stations. Lesley and David - Sydney

Great guide! She explained everything and took me to all the important stations. She knew her stuff! Worth it!

Our guide ,Dacha, was charming and very informative. We took the 2 hour tour and saw what Dacha thought were the most beautiful and interesting metro stations. The Metro is certainly worthy of its museum status and we were glad to have some of the designs and features explained to us.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
