A Tacky Good Time at the Hale Koa Luau in Waikiki

On our last night on Oahu, as we walked back to our hotel to kill the remaining hours before our flight, we stumbled on a long line of men and women dressed up for a Hawaiian night out. They were in line for that evening’s luau at the  Hale Koa Hotel  in Waikiki.

We weren’t exactly dressed in our finest, but walked to the ticket counter to see how long the show lasted and how many clamshells the luau would cost us.  It turned out to be a decent price ($48 per adult) and the timing was perfect.

The authenticity of the Polynesian cultural experience in commercial luaus is up for debate. On the other hand, we heard that Oahu’s Luaus can be a cheesy good time if you’re willing to let your hair down a little. We picked up our last minute tickets and set in for a fine night of over the top tourist tackiness and family fun. The Hale Koa luau had all that in spades and more.

Hale Koa Luau Review

The Hale Koa puts on a great luau for kids. We were greeted with a shell lei and a decent Mai Thai. The little ones were given some delicious fruit juice. The lovely gardens were filled with fun activities, including making a flower lei bracelet, creating a warrior head band made of palm fronds, blowing conch shells, getting a removable tattoo and learning to twirl Poi (balls on a rope) originally practiced by the Maori from New Zealand.

One thing the Hale Koa pre-show had plenty of was humor. Cousin Dennis hosted the pre-show demonstrating all the activities around the yard and then rapidly climbed a coconut tree in the classic tribal style. He was quick witted, comical and had everyone smiling along with his antics. Everyone from the pre-show demonstrations was smiling and laughing, including the hula dancers and the tribesmen.

The pre-show ended with the removal of of the roast pig from the imu (underground oven). Traditionally, an imu was a hole dug in the ground, lined with head size lava rocks and with a fire of kiawe wood. Banana tree stumps were typically used to line the imu to prevent burning and to help steam the pig. The pig was then stuffed with hot rocks and wrapped with banana leaves for around 12 hours. At the luau, the pit is a permanent large mound of rock and concrete, however the pig is still prepared in the traditional style.

Traditionally called an Aha ‘Aina, the luau was a gathering centered around a feast to celebrate a successful harvest, the birth of a child, or a victorious battle. It included games of skill and competitions of bravery. The luau show at the Hale Kona Hotel is more of a dinner theater with a luau theme.

Native Hawaiian Glenn Medeiros (of Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love for You  fame from the late 1980s) put on the dinner show with equal doses of cheese, humor and patriotism. Because the Hale Koa Luau is a military hotel, there was a lot of commentary on military service in the show and an over the top, but touching tribute to those who’ve served at the end of the evening.

We were expecting the dinner show to focus on Hawaiian history, but instead it featured many different styles of Polynesian entertainment, including Tahitian hula, Maori haka and of course, a Samoan fire dancer. The show was professional and the dancers talented. We would have preferred to see more of the entertaining Cousin Dennis and less of Glenn, but the show moved along at a good pace. The young fire dancers were especially talented and both of our kids watched the fire dancing demonstration with fascination.

Supper was more than ample for the average guest, with huge plates of Kahlua pork, Mahimahi fish, chicken, sweet potato, seasoned rice and fried banana. Servers dropped prepared plates on our tables as we watched the activities. Side dishes included everything from fresh fruit that was cut up and stacked all around the table to cucumber salad, seaweed and the obligatory poi.

Poi is a gloopy, purplish, slighly sour paste made from the taro root. The taro is cooked, mashed with water and then fermented. Poi is a common dish that Hawaii locals seem to love.

For a vegetarian, the meal was definitely lacking. Micki ended up eating fresh fruit from our table and the sweet potatoes. She went away more than a little hungry. She also learned the hard way that the little bowl that looks like bruschetta topping is actually lomilomi, a native Hawaiian dish made with salmon, onions and tomatoes. Not a fan of salmon she took a giant bite and was more than a little surprised at the flavor. The line “Who adds raw fish to bruschetta?” became our in-joke for the remainder of the evening.

The final course was a simple but delicious desert of either coconut cake or pudding. The kids, who were a little hungry themselves, sweet talked the server into seconds.

Extra alcoholic drinks could be purchased from the center bar, but since we were leaving in a few hours we decided to skip them. From what we heard, most are $7 a piece so we were happy we stuck with the pitchers of water they served.

The evening finished the same way it started, with photo ops of women in coconut bras and beefy tattooed men (one of whom looked exactly like The Rock).

All in all, the Hale Koa luau was a cheesy good time, even though it wasn’t in our  travel plans . It’s exactly what you would expect of a commercial luau in the middle of Waikiki, Oahu. We were thrilled we had the chance to take in an Hawaiian Luau and the kids were so tired that the flight home was quiet and restful.

All About The Hale Koa Luau

Reviews said that you must be a member of the military or sponsored by someone to attend the Hale Koa luau. We’re not military and we just walked up to the ticket counter and purchased tickets, so it doesn’t seem to be enforced.

Where:   Monday nights at the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki.

When:  Seating for dinner is at 5:30.

Cost:  $48 for adults, free for kids under six. Tickets included two free alcoholic drinks, pre-dinner show and activities, supper and the supper show. You can buy tickets at the Hale Koa Activities Desk, by phone (808-955-0555) with a major credit card or at Special Services ticket outlets.

Reservations:   To guarantee a seat, a reservation is a good idea, but we walked up just before 4:30 and bought four tickets at the ticket counter on the ocean side of the hotel.

More info:   Hale Koa Hotel or phone 808-955-0555.

Cons:   The Hale Koa Luau isn’t on the beach, so if you’re in the mood for a luau on the sand with the surf crashing in the background, this may not be the one for you.

Pros:   Great entertainment option for families, much cheaper than other Luaus and located conveniently in Waikiki.

Other Oahu Luaus

Germaines .  Germaine’s Luau . $72 for adults, free ages five and under. Located 45 minutes from Waikiki, with free transportation from Waikiki hotels. Tickets may be cheaper from your hotel reservation desk than the luau’s website.

Paradise Cove . The Paradise Cove Luau is set on 12 acres along the ocean on Oahu’s leeward coast near Ko Olina. Prices range fro $86 to $149 per adult, depending on your choice of seating, number of drinks, and perks like a lei greeting and souvenier photo.

Polynesian Cultural Center Ali’i Luau . The Ali’i Luau is located on 42 acres on Oahu’s North Shore. Tickets are $91.95 for adults. Oddly, this place is owned by Mormons, and we’ve heard that the revised Polynesian history displayed here reflects it.

Royal Hawaiian Hotel . Royal Hawaiian Hotel’s Aha ‘Aina, a Royal Celebration Luau, is an oceanfront affair. Tickets cost $169 for adults.

Have you visited the Hale Koa Luau? What did you think? Let us know below!

Great great, Paradise Cove Luau is pretty awesome and a lot of fun (especially if you have kids).

Update! As of 2023, the price has increased to $115.

Hale Koa Hotel – An Affordable Resort in Paradise

Hale koa eligibility, how much does it cost, hale koa restaurants and bars, get out and about, getting there.

Several years ago, my family and I had an amazing vacation on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. We stayed at the Hale Koa , an Armed Forces Recreation Center (AFRC) located in the Waikiki Beach area of Honolulu.

The Hale Koa is one of four Armed Forces Recreation Centers around the world run by the Army. These resorts were built for the military and are exclusively for use by military members, retirees, Department of Defense civilians and authorized guests.

The Hale Koa resort is located on 72 acres on Waikiki Beach in downtown Honolulu. It boasts a gorgeous beachfront location, so you can walk from your room to the sand in just a few minutes. If you get tired of the mesmerizing brilliant blue water, you can take your pick of four swimming pools. Hungry? There are eight eateries, ranging from fine dining to beach bars. You’ll also find an Exchange, a fitness center, walking and jogging trails, laundry facilities and parking.

A beachfront rental shop makes it easy to snag umbrellas, chairs, snorkel gear, kayaks and longboards – all at reasonable prices.

Hale Koa Resort Map

The Hale Koa is for military members and their families, so there are some eligibility restrictions regarding who can use the resort.

  • Armed forces and their families, including active duty, Guard, reserves and cadets at the service academies. Use your Common Access Card as identification.
  • Other uniformed services, including Public Health Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps. Use DD Form 2, PHS 1866-1 or 1866-3 for identification.
  • Military retirees, including gray area retirees of the Guard or reserves. Use DD Form 2, 1173 or 1173-1.
  • Select separated service members, including those with a 100% disability rating (use DD Form 1173 or DD Form 2765), those who were involuntarily separated and are eligible for TAMP (use DD Form 2) and personnel separated under the Voluntary Separation Incentive and Special Separation Benefit (use DD Form 2).
  • Former and/or surviving spouses and family members (use DD Form 1173 or 1173-1).
  • Select DOD civilians, foreign military and others who are working on joint military projects or are otherwise authorized. Use DD Form 1173 or 2765.
  • DOD civilians and family members, current and retired. Use DOD or CG ID card, retired identification card or a current leave and earnings statement along with photo ID.

Eligible members can also sponsor additional rooms for guests.

Room rates at the Hale Koa range from $184-$410 per night (current rates valid till Sept. 30, 2024) and are based on two factors: the location of the room in the resort and the member’s rank or status.

As you might expect, the better the view, the more expensive the room. There are five room levels: standard, garden view, partial ocean view, ocean view and deluxe ocean front. My family and I stayed in a garden view room, and the views were beautiful.

The second pricing factor is the visitor’s rank or status. Pricing is based on the highest-ranking occupant of the room. There are four rate bands, Rate 1 through Rate IV, based on rank or other eligibility factors. Room rates are affordable, especially for the Waikiki area.

Here are the rate bands:

  • Ratel I: E1–E-6
  • Rate II: E-7–E-9, WO1–CW3, O1–O3, widows, veterans with a 100% disability rating
  • Rate III: CW4–CW5, O4–O10, DOD civilians, veterans with a 0-99% service-connected disability rating, Purple Heart recipients, former prisoners of war, caregivers of disabled veterans
  • Rate IV: Official travel – all grades TDY/PCS/TLA, eligible foreign military

You can book rooms up to a year in advance. The Hale Koa fills up fast, so book as soon as you know your travel plans — at least six months in advance to ensure you get your room choice. If the hotel is full during your vacation dates, don’t despair. The reservation staff can help, according to the website: “Check back periodically. We can also help connect you to nearby hotels with special rates available for our guests, based on their availability. Remember, even if you stay at a different property, the Hale Koa Hotel’s restaurants and events are still benefits available to you as an eligible guest.”

The room we stayed in was on par with what you would expect for military lodging — not quite as fancy as what you might find in a high-priced resort. It was the perfect base of operations while we enjoyed all Hawaii has to offer.

The tower we stayed in was built in the 1970s. The rooms are somewhat smaller than you might find in a more recently built hotel (roughly 300 sq. feet), but space was adequate. Our room featured two queen-sized beds, a bedside table, a small table or desk area with two chairs, a very small closet area and a single sink.

All rooms have a coffee maker and mini fridge, but no microwave. In the Maile Tower, microwaves are available at one end of each hallway, where there is also an ice machine and a vending machine. The other end of the hallway features a washer and dryer. In the Ilima Tower, you’ll find a microwave on every floor from the fourth floor and above. WiFi is free.

As mentioned earlier, the Hale Koa features eight restaurants and bars. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet at Koko at Kalia . There were a variety of dishes and desserts, including an ice cream bar. The menu changes, so you should plan accordingly.

Bibas Courtyard Grill is only open for lunch and dinner service. We ate there once but were less impressed with the food. It was good, but not great. The Bar at Bibas also offers a take-out option, and they feature a happy hour.

The Barefoot Bar is located next to the pool and the beach. It features live island music every night. The music, the view and the cold drinks created the perfect ambiance. The bar is open to the public, as it’s right next to the beach.

The Hale Koa offers a number of activities to connect you with the island spirit, including a luau with fire dancing, a garden tour every Thursday, hula dancing lessons, and magic and comedy shows.

The main pool includes water slides, splash pads, a kids’ play area, play pirate ship and other family-friendly features. Adults 18 years old and older can relax in the adult infinity pool. You can also rent a cabana, which includes two lounge chairs, two armchairs and a table.

Waikiki is great. We loved the beach and were able to go snorkeling and kayaking right in front of the hotel. We saw a variety of fish and even several sea turtles. But Oahu has so much more to offer than just Waikiki Beach and Honolulu. We traveled to Hanauma Bay, Makapu’u Point Lookout, Waikiki Aquarium, the North Shore, the central part of Oahu near Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Airfield, and much more.

Other popular attractions include Pearl Harbor-Hickam, various hiking trails, botanical gardens and waterfalls. Hawaii Navy Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) runs a website called Great Life Hawaii, where you can learn more about travel and tour opportunities and discounts.

The Hale Koa doesn’t have an airport shuttle or a shuttle to Joint Base Pearl Habor-Hickam (JBPHH), so you will need to make your own travel arrangements to and from the resort. Options include taxi, ride share (Uber and Lyft) and the city bus service, or you can arrange an airport shuttle (approximately $30 per person). Plan for it to take 20-30 minutes to get to and from the airport.

My son in the Air Force, do you have to stay at resort hotel to use the facility, ie swimming pool or beach, my wife and I is staying here for 6 months. The place is the Hale Koa hotel in Waikiki

Opie, my understanding is that the beach is open to the public, but you have to be staying at the Hale Koa to utilize their swimming pools and certain other amenities. You can contact the Hale Koa directly to see which amenities are open to people who are not staying at the Hale Koa.

My wife and I are trying to plan a vacation to Hale Koa next spring. { Mar thru May 2023 } Are there any restrictions on the length of our stay ? Understand the early booking.

I am a retired USAF 0 – 6 Col. We are both in our 80’s and would like to also know if you have rooms for people that have rails in the bathrooms in the shower, etc. We have young family members on active duty in the USAF in Hawaii.

Looking forward to returning to Hawaii for 2 / 3 weeks if possible. Thank you for your help…..

Hale Koa Hotel Hawaii

A tropical oasis rests on the edge of Waikiki Beach inside the Fort DeRussy Armed Forces Recreation Center . The Hale Koa Hotel is designated for active duty, reserves, DOD employees and their families.

The name Hale Koa means House of the Warrior in Hawaiian, and the name could not be any more fitting. Sitting on over 60 acres of Waikiki Beach, the Hale Koa Hotel is one of the most beautiful places for those who have sacrificed for our country to have some fun in the sun.

Aside from all the amenities of a typical resort, the Hale Koa Hotel has the best access to the recreation facilities of Fort DeRussy. While the hotel is for military and their families only and owned by the Department of Defense, it is self-sufficient and does not receive any government funding.

Tour Pick-Up Location: Taking a tour? If you’re staying at Hale Koa Hotel, we’ll pick you up at the Hale Koa’s front loading area.

After seeing the advantages to having rest and relaxation destinations for military personnel only, like that of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel during World War II, plans for the hotel were put in place. Opened in 1975, the hotel was an immediate success and received a substantial expansion in 1991. The mission has always been to provide first-class service and accommodations to military personnel at an affordable price.

Facts & Trivia

  • Island:  Oahu
  • Amenities:  Multiple swimming pools, fantastic entertainment, champagne Sunday brunch, video arcade,
  • Insider Tip: Make sure to reserve your room in advance, over 1 million guests stay at the 817 rooms of the hotel every year.
  • Fun Fact:  Need to get away from the splash fight in the hotel pool? The Hale Koa Hotel has the only Adults Only pool in Waikiki.
  • What to Expect:  Unparalleled service for an affordable price, quick access to the fun and excitement of Waikiki, beach rentals, and beach activities.
