Jog Falls: Jog Falls, a major attraction in Karnataka, is located in the Shimoga district of Karnataka. Also known by alternative names of Gerusoppe Falls, Gersoppa Falls, and Jogada Gundi, it is one of the highest waterfalls in India. During monsoons, one can see a breathtaking view of the falls with rainbows coming every now and then. It is one of nature's splendid masterpieces and is situated in the dense evergreen forests. The effect of these striking falls is enhanced by the wild and beautiful region around it which is covered with plenty of abundant vegetation. This waterfall drops directly down without streaming on the rocks.

Varadahalli: Varadahalli is covered with rain forests and the ashram is located at a very beautiful place. Varadahalli is situated 6 km from Sagar, in the Shimoga district. Amidst the Western Ghats is the place where Agastya Rishi and Ved Vyas went to meditate and perform his Sadhana. Ved Vyas put the Durgambha idol there near a cave where he meditated daily. Sridhar Swamiji attained Moksha at the very place and in his memory his disciples built a Samadhi there.

Varadamoola: River Varadaa , a tributary of Tungabhadra originate from here. Located at a distance of about 8 km from Sagara town in Shimoga district, this place is popular for temple of Goddess Varadadevi and also few ancient shrines with rich history and traditions. Pushkarini or small water bodies located within the temple premises reflect ancient purity of culture, devotion and prayer. Generally it's not over crowded and it's advisable to visit the place in early morning to enjoy the beauty of pristine western ghats.

Ikkeri: Ikkeri is a historical village in Karnataka. It is located at a distance of about 6 km to the south of the Sagara town in the Shimoga district. It was the erstwhile capital of the Keladi Nayakas. The word Ikkeri means 'Two Streets' in the Kannada language.

Keladi: The town was once ruled by Nayakas, a part of the Vijayanagara empire. One such amazing piece of art is the Keladi Rameshwara temple. The temple is an extraordinary example of the marvelous Dravidian style of architecture. Chowdappa Nayaka who had built the temple, strategically placed every brick and tile to give rise to this awe-inspiring piece of work.

Taylor Swift Sells a Rainbow of Vinyl Albums. Fans Keep Buying Them.

Artists across pop genres are finding success with colored vinyl and different variants of their releases. For Swifties, the urge to collect them all is strong.

  • Share full article

A grid of six different versions of “Midnights”

By Ben Sisario

When Taylor Swift released nine vinyl editions of her album “Folklore” in 2020, Tylor Hammers, a fan in Florida, took notice. But it wasn’t until “Midnights” two years later that he became a true collector, scouring the internet and retail shops for every variation of her albums he could find — spending about $1,000 in the process — and cataloging the technicolor expanse of Swift’s LP output in an online discography .

“I get enjoyment out of being a completionist,” Hammers, 24, said in a recent interview.

He’s not the only one.

Although streaming remains the dominant music format, physical media has been a growing niche where the industry can cater to so-called superfans , who express their dedication to artists by shelling out big bucks for collectible versions of new releases, sometimes in multiple quantities. K-pop acts like BTS pioneered this strategy by putting out an array of elaborate CD packages, often featuring goodies like postcards and photo booklets, which helped the boy band repeatedly go to No. 1.

But nobody does it quite like Swift, or at least at the same scale. Last year she sold 3.5 million LPs in the United States, thanks in part to five pastel-hued variants of “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” a rerecording of her 2014 album, and the popularity of Swift’s entire catalog during her record-breaking Eras Tour .

When Swift’s latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” comes out on Friday, it will be available in a portfolio of different versions — on vinyl, CD and even cassette — with bonus tracks and, on certain “deluxe” editions sold through Swift’s website, trinkets like magnets, photo cards and engraved bookmarks. Some items, like a standard CD, go for as little as $13. But last weekend, Swift’s site offered a limited run of autographed LPs for $50, which, according to fans on social media, vanished in 20 minutes.

“Vinyl collecting fits so well into Taylor’s fandom,” Hammers said, “because we’ve always collected Taylor-related things like clothing, general merchandise, CDs and even confetti.”

It is a global phenomenon, driven in part by the far greater revenues that artists can earn from physical products in the age of streaming, when per-click royalties are infinitesimal. Of the 10 most popular albums around the world last year, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, two were by Swift and five were by K-pop acts. Vinyl collecting also spiked during the Covid-19 pandemic, exacerbating supply-chain problems and resulting in monthslong delays , though wait times have since lessened.

Swift, 34, has long understood the role that collectible items can play in building fan connections. A decade ago, when the original “1989” album went on sale, she reposted images of fans displaying the CDs they bought in shops. For “Lover” in 2019, Swift sold four CD editions that came with booklets featuring excerpts from her journal entries .

For “Midnights,” a total of 35 physical products, each with its own UPC code, were sold in the United States, according to Luminate, which supplies the data for Billboard’s charts. Some of those were essentially duplicates, like 10 boxed sets containing a CD and a tee, categorized by the size of the shirts. But the list of “Midnights” products also includes CDs and vinyl LPs with varying disc colors and cover art, plus editions with bonus tracks, autographed photos and edited lyrics, along with a CD that was initially sold only at her live shows.

Most ingeniously, a sequence of numbers on the back covers of the four standard “Midnights” LPs, when arranged in a grid, formed the hours of a clock. For $49, Swift’s site also sold shelves and a working timepiece to go with them. In its opening week, “Midnights” sold 1.1 million copies as a complete package, the first time any album had crossed the million mark in pure sales since Swift’s own “Reputation,” five years earlier.

As of last week, “Midnights” has had the equivalent of 7.1 million album sales in the United States, with streaming making up about 58 percent of that total, according to Luminate. But about 2.5 million copies — 35 percent of the album’s total consumption — were sold on physical media. The most popular version, with nearly 460,000 sales, was the “lavender” CD, with three extra tracks, sold at Target stores. (That figure does not represent all of Target’s sales of the album.) The lone cassette version, issued in “moonstone blue,” sold 17,000 copies and is now being offered for upward of $100 on resale sites like eBay and Discogs.

In recent years, collectible packaging, particularly in the form of multicolored vinyl, has become de rigueur for virtually any major artist hoping for a No. 1 debut, from Olivia Rodrigo and Beyoncé to Harry Styles and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. In a streaming-dominated era, when digital music offers nothing tangible for fans to display as a totem, a rainbow of vinyl variants is one draw for fans; versions with extra tracks, sold through exclusive deals with Target, Walmart or indie shops, are another.

Dan Runcie, who analyzes the music industry on his podcast and newsletter Trapital , sees the phenomenon as partly a matter of artists and record companies catching up to the merchandising of sports.

“The music industry is trying to figure out how to maximize superfans and give them more of what they want,” Runcie said. “Some are willing to pay to have more variants on the wall. It’s no different from sports fans paying up to have rookie cards.”

But it has also brought waves of dissenting backlash, with accusations that artists are exploiting fans’ loyalty — some anonymous Swifties balked last year about the “1989” remake versions being a “ shameless cash grab ” — and about the environmental impact of all that duplicate packaging.

Billie Eilish will release her next album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” due May 17, on eight vinyl variants — though she has said they will all be made with recycled materials.

Last month, before her album announcement, Eilish briefly caused a minor fracas when she said in an interview with Billboard that it was “ wasteful ” for artists to release “40 different vinyl packages that have a different unique thing just to get you to keep buying more.” Swift fans interpreted that comment as directed at their idol; Eilish then clarified on social media, “I wasn’t singling anyone out, these are industry-wide systemic issues.”

Hammers, who collects records by Lana Del Rey as avidly as he does Swift’s, said he didn’t agree that an artist releasing multiple vinyl editions exploited fans’ loyalty. Fans aren’t forced to buy anything, he said, and he appreciated artists who put care into their product.

“At the end of the day, they’re all trying to sell their music,” he said, “and it’s one way to sell it.”

taylor swift tortured poets department lyrics best

The torture is over for fans who waited weeks and months for Taylor Swift ’s “ The Tortured Poets Department ” to arrive. But the truly faithful still have some work ahead, in trying to decode what or who is the subject of each of the 16 songs (plus four bonus tracks). Even without immediately solving all those mysteries, though, the album is filled with lines that are bold and striking (and sometimes funny).

Here is our guide to the most quotable lyrics from every song on the standard edition of “The Tortured Poets Department,” plus some of the bonus tracks. (Additionally, we’ve broken down some of the lyrics of the surprise double album .)

Popular on Variety

Ask about the weather Now you’re in my backyard Turned into good neighbors Your wife waters flowers I want to kill her

THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT

A fairly blissful love song — destined not to last, in the overall arc of the album. Speaking of things that people don’t get over, Charlie Puth may never get over this shout-out.

You smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist I scratch your head, you fall asleep Like a tattooed golden retriever

The singer brightens at being considered marriage material, even if it’s only hinted at in a toying way.

At dinner you take my ring off my middle finger and put it on the one people put wedding rings on And it’s the closest I’ve come to my heart exploding

The first of the album’s many F-bombs appears, albeit in a sweet way in this first instance.

Who’s gonna hold you like me? Nofuckinbody

MY BOY ONLY BREAKS HIS FAVORITE TOYS

The first of the true breakup songs has the singer feeling like Weird Barbie.

I felt more when we played pretend Then with all the Kens Cause he took me out of my box Stole my tortured heart Left all these broken parts Told me I’m better off But I’m not

Crying at the gym Everything comes out teenage petulance Fuck it if I can’t have him

SO LONG, LONDON

Anyone who’s spent years in an ultimately failed relationship, maybe especially women, will have a line to relate to here.

I’m pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free

The singer references an altar where she was never joined… and rues having to break up with a city as well as a bloke.

You swore that you loved me but where were the clues? I died on the altar waiting for the proof You sacrificed us to the gods of your bluest days And I’m just getting color back into my face I’m just mad as hell ‘cause I loved this place For so long, London Had a good run

BUT DADDY I LOVE HIM

One of the album’s most comical and upbeat songs has her quoting the title line lifted from “The Little Mermaid,” and faking her folks out with some good/bad news.

Now I’m running with my dress unbuttoned Screaming “But daddy I love him” I’m having his baby No, I’m not, but you should see your faces

Things get more serious as the narrator spits fire at anyone who clutches pearls and judges her for hooking up with a bad boy.

I’d rather burn my whole life down Then listen to one more second to this bitching and moaning I’ll tell you something about my good name It’s mine alone to disgrace I don’t cater to all these vipers dressed in empath’s clothing

Another serious keeper, along those same lines:

God save the most judgmental creeps who say they want what’s best for me Sanctimoniously performing soliloquies I’ll never see

FRESH OUT THE SLAMMER

The title phrase is comical, but Swift’s description of a long prison sentence, i.e. years spent with a fickle jailer, sounds dead-serious.

Handcuffed to the spell I was under For just one hour of sunshine Years of labor, locks and ceilings In the shade of how he was feeling But it’s gonna be alright I did my time

She sings about ignoring good advice from those who wanted her to go for parole a lot earlier:

My friends tried but I wouldn’t hear it Watched me daily disappearing For just one glimpse of his smile

Not a love song, but a song about escaping bad or boring circumstances by relocating (metaphorically or otherwise). Here comes the album’s single funniest line…

My friends all smell like weed or little babies

…which is soon followed by the album’s second funniest line, shared as a twin lead vocal with Florence from Florence + the Machine:

Fuck me up, Florida

GUILTY AS SIN?

It’s not clear if Swift deliberately means to reference her own song “Mine” here, but the sensual fantasy that she’s bringing to life works either way:

What if he’s written ‘Mine” on my upper thigh only in my mind?

Religious imagery comes to the fore as she looks for redemption in perceived sin.

WHO’S AFRAID OF LITTLE OLD ME

In one of the few non-love songs on the album, Swift harks back to songs where she riffed on the bad image people have had of her, from “Blank Space” to “Mad Woman.”

I was tame I was gentle till the circus life made me mean Don’t you worry folks, we took out all her teeth Who’s afraid of little old me? Well, you should be

Moving on from the circus, she proudly paints herself as the town witch:

I want to snarl and show you just how disturbed this has made me You wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me So all you kids can sneak into my house, with all the cobwebs I’m always drunk on my own tears Is that what they all said? That I’ll sue you if you step onto my lawn That I’m fearsome and I’m wretched and I’m wrong Put narcotics into all of my songs And that’s why you’re still singing along

I CAN FIX HIM (NO, REALLY I CAN)

Swift references a lover known for his inappropriate humor. Sound like anyone in her past life we know?

The jokes that he told across the bar were revolting and far too loud They shake their heads saying, “God help her” when I tell ‘em he’s my man But your good Lord doesn’t need to lift a finger I can fix him (no really I can) And only I can

Her argument about being able to rehabilitate a guy falls apart with one nearly tossed-off final line:

Woah maybe I can’t

Before she gets into a relationship that has more recently devastated her, she looks back to a previous one, in which she feels she sacrificed deep romance or passion for stability.

I thought I was better safe than starry-eyed

With this newer guy, she cleverly mixes language usually reserved to describe mutually getting drunk with language about the promise of marriage and family.

You shit-talked me under the table talking rings and talking cradles

And then come accusations of cowardice and casual ghosting:

Oh what a valiant roar What a bland goodbye The coward claimed he was a lion I’m combing through the braids of lies “I’ll never leave” “Never mind”

I CAN DO IT WITH A BROKEN HEART

The most upbeat track on the album is about smiling through tears — presumably meaning the giant smile that was the Eras Tour, during which, it’s clear, she was nursing a broken heart for at least part of the early going.

I’m so depressed I act like it’s my birthday Every day

She finds a reason to be cocky as well as depressed in the song’s big finish.

You know you’re good when you can do it With a broken heart And I’m good Cause I’m miserable And nobody even knows! Try and come for my job

THE SMALLEST MAN WHO EVER LIVED

The details get remarkably specific in the song that may count as her most dramatic cut-down of an ex ever.

You tried to buy some pills from a friend of friends of mine They just ghosted you Now you know what it feels like

And I don’t even want you back, I just want to know If rusting my sparkling summer was the goal

Looking for motives of a hit-and-run lover, she can only imagine ulterior ones.

Were you writing a book? Were you a sleeper cell spy? In 50 years will all this be declassified? And you’ll confess why you did it And I’ll say “good riddance” Cause it wasn’t sexy once it wasn’t forbidden

The fusillade continues:

You crashed my party and your rental car You said normal girls were “boring” But you were gone by the morning You are what you did And I’ll forget you But I’ll never forgive The smallest man who ever lived

THE ALCHEMY

Back to love songs, she makes a curious reference to possible past drug use, in setting up a common play on words.

He jokes that it’s heroin but this time with an “E”

But then come sports team metaphors… if not written more recently than a lot of the rest of the album, then possibly coincidentally prophetic.

Shirts off and your friends lift you up over their heads Beer sticking to the floor Cheers chanted cause they said There was no chance Trying to be the greatest in the league Where’s the trophy? He just comes running over to me

The entire lyrics to this song are set off in quotes, coming from the points of view of people who look up to starlets but demand they be non-stop dazzling. Swift references silent screen star Clara Bow in the first verse and Stevie Nicks in the second before finally getting around to name-checking a third superstar.

“You look like Taylor Swift In this light We’re loving it You’ve got edge She never did”

BONUS TRACK: THE BLACK DOG

Thanks to shared location tracking that never got turned off, the narrator gets evidence her recent ex has just entered a bar called the Black Dog, where, apparently, they would have memories of hearing songs by the 2000s pop-punk band the Starting Line.

And I hope it’s shitty in the Black Dog When someone plays The Starting Line And you jump up, but she’s too young To know this song that was intertwined In the tragic fabric of our dreaming Cause tail between your legs You’re leaving

BONUS TRACK: THE MANUSCRIPT

The singer quotes a sweet-talker who was equally good with promissory bedroom talk and baby talk.

He said that if the sex was half as good as the conversation was Soon they’d be pushing strollers But soon it was over

An age difference is brought up, as it’s clear this song is describing a relationship that happened in youth, in the narrator’s case. She’s still trying to figure out how inappropriate the disparity was.

Then she dated boys who were her own age With dartboards on the backs of their doors She thought about how he said Since she was so wise beyond her years Everything had been above board She wasn’t sure

Taylor Swift has always been, first and foremost, a songwriter. But with a title like The Tortured Poets Department , the pop star’s new album calls even more attention to her lyricism than usual, inviting listeners to dissect, interpret and intellectualize each track just as a scholar might pore over the works of Walt Whitman or Emily Dickinson (whom the singer just so happens to be distantly related to , as we learned shortly before the record’s release).

Adding to the already impossibly high levels of intrigue surrounding the project, Swift is famously at her best when writing autobiographically about her own personal life and heartbreaks — and an innately complicated breakup from a boyfriend of six years (ahem, Joe Alwyn), a rumored situationship with the 1975’s Matty Healy and the trials of embarking on a colossal global tour while dealing with such earth-shattering life changes certainly offered up plenty of inspiration in that department (no pun intended).

Plus, fans knew going in that Tortured Poets would find Swift delivering some of her most vulnerable lyrics yet. The musician told them so herself. “It kind of reminded me of why songwriting is something that actually gets me through my life,” she said of the record during one of her Melbourne Eras Tour performances. “I’ve never had an album where I needed songwriting more than I needed it on Tortured Poets. ”

What they didn’t know was that two hours after the release of the album, the star would immediately drop 15 additional tracks under a package dubbed The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology. Some of her rawest moments as Department Chairman come on these bonus songs, with Swift writing on Instagram , “I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you.”

Between the 16 main tracks on The Tortured Poets Department and the 15 extra ones, Swift covers a lot of ground. Keep reading to see the 13 best instances of lyrical genius on her sweeping new project, in tracklist order, below.

"The Tortured Poets Department"

Lyric: “You told Lucy you’d kill yourself if I ever leave/ And I had said that to Jack about so I felt seen/ Everyone we know understands why it’s meant to be/ Because we’re crazy.”

Why it’s great: On an album full of English major-like prose, Swift packs a purposeful punch when she delivers lines as direct and razor-edged as this one. The unflinching use of two names of people in her real life — almost certainly Lucy Dacus and TTPD collaborator Jack Antonoff, both of whom share a circle with Matty Healy — calls back to the fictional storytelling style on Folklore , although the story is much more real this time.

"My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys"

Lyric: “My boy only breaks his favorite toys/ I’m queen of sand castles he destroys/ ‘Cause it fit too right, puzzle pieces in the dead of night/ I should’ve known it was a matter of time.”

Why it’s great: This track is home to one of Swift’s best extended metaphors on Tortured Poets , serving the dual purpose of being a character study of her ex as well as admitting that she knew the relationship was doomed from the start.

"Guilty as Sin?"

Lyric: “I dream of cracking locks/ Throwin’ my life to the wolves or the ocean rocks/ Crashing into him tonight, he’s a paradox/ I’m seeing visions/ Am I bad or mad or wise?”

Why it’s great: The “Guilty as Sin?” intro showcases some of Swift’s best imagery on Tortured Poets , painting the scene like a gothic novel a la Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca or Kate Chopin’s The Awakening .

"Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?"

Lyric: “I was tame, I was gentle ’til the circus life made me mean/ Don’t you worry folks we took out all her teeth … You caged me and then you called me crazy/ I am what I am ’cause you trained me.”

Why it’s great: This track could be a narration of Stephen King’s Carrie , the titular character of which Swift could certainly draw her own parallels to. After years of having her gifts questioned, belittled and used against her, the vocalist imagines enacting her revenge in a spree of accountability-rejecting derangement — reminding fans and haters alike that her relationship to the public is a two-way street.

"I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)"

Lyric: “The dopamine races through his brain on a six-lane Texas highway/ His hands so calloused from his pistol, softly traces hearts on my face/ And I could see it from a mile away/ A perfect case for my certain skill set.”

Why it’s great: Borrowing much stylistic inspiration from the pop star’s “Snow on the Beach” collaborator Lana Del Rey, “I Can Fix Him” is a cautionary tale warning against the dangers of romanticizing toxic men — because if Taylor Swift can fall into that trap, anyone can. This stanza is especially loaded, the first half signifying a daydream that Swift gently deflates with a self-aware remark about her own problematic tendencies, setting the stage for her to later end the song with, “Maybe I can’t [fix him].”

Lyric: “You shit-talked me under the table/ Talking rings and talking cradles/ I wish I could unrecall/ How much we almost had it all.”

Why it’s great: “LOML” features some of the most devastating insights on Tortured Poets , including a punch-in-the-gut twist of the song’s title at the very end. Saddest of them all, though, is when Swift makes a rare allusion to her buried desire to be a wife and mother. She’s a woman who’s amassed one of the most impressive, lucrative, record-smashing music careers in history, but some of life’s simplest pleasures are still out of reach for her.

"I Can Do It With a Broken Heart"

Lyric: “Lights, camera, b—h, smile/ Even when you wanna die/ He said he’d love me all his life/ But that life was too short/ Breaking down I hit the floor/ All the pieces of me shattered as the crowd was chanting, ‘More!'”

Why it’s great: Swift and Alwyn’s breakup was the unspoken elephant in the stadium during the first couple months of the Eras Tour, the pain of which the pop star only betrayed when tears occasionally came to her eyes during particularly emotional surprise song performances. With “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” — which runs parallel to Folklore ‘s “Mirrorball” — Swift finally confirms what fans only suspected: “I’m miserable and nobody even knows.”

"The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived"

Lyric: “‘Cause it wasn’t sexy once it wasn’t forbidden/ I would’ve died for your sins/ Instead I just died inside/ And you deserve prison, but you won’t get time.”

Why it’s great: “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” is probably the most brutal song on all of Tortured Poets , but this line is an especially lethal takedown of the oppressively private nature of her past relationship.

"Clara Bow"

Lyric: “You look like Taylor Swift in this light, we’re loving it/ You’ve got edge, she never did.”

Why it’s great: This lyric finds Swift positioning herself in a long timeline of female stars whose lives and legacies have been dissected and commodified by an insatiable public — Old Hollywood starlet Clara Bow, Stevie Nicks and now Taylor Swift. Akin to “Nothing New” or “The Lucky One” from Red (Taylor’s Version) , the singer acknowledges that no matter the ceilings she shatters, her image will always outlast her humanity in an endlessly repeating, self-fulfilling prophecy.

"The Black Dog"

Lyric: “I just don’t understand/ How you don’t miss me/ In The Black Dog, when someone plays The Starting Line/ And you jump up, but she’s too young to know this song … Old habits die screaming.”

Why it’s great: “Old habits die screaming,” which repeats throughout the song, is one of Swift’s best turns of phrase on the record — especially paired with the intensity of her vocals as she delivers it, the earth-shaking production making your stomach drop each time. From the reference to the “Best of Me” pop-punk band to the generational difference it illuminates between Swift’s ex and his new girl, each detail of this line serves an expertly crafted purpose.

"How Did It End?"

Lyric: “Come one come all, it’s happening again/ The empathetic hunger descends/ We’ll tell no-one except all of our friends/ We must know, how did it end?”

Why it’s great: Taylor loves her Swifties, but this chorus makes it very clear that she knows exactly what fuels their relationship: an intrinsic nosiness into the pop star’s personal life that both parties know can’t be helped. It could also double as an “I see you” moment directed at the population at large, which has long used the pop star’s high profile relationships as conversation starters.

"Thank You Aimee"

Lyric: “I wrote a thousand songs that you find uncool/ I built a legacy which you can’t undo/ But when I count the scars, there’s a moment of truth/ That there wouldn’t be this, if there hadn’t been you.”

Why it’s great: Seemingly a letter signed, sealed and delivered straight to Kim Kardashian (whose first name she hid in capitalized letters in the song’s title), these lyrics do something Swift hasn’t done in any of her many songs about her various feuds over the years. Unlike “Bad Blood,” “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” or “Karma,” she actually acknowledges that she benefitted greatly from her clash with the reality star and came out on the other side stronger than she was before. It’s a shade of maturity that’s been a long time coming for the singer — who’s now in her mid-30s and 11 albums deep into an untouchable career — and a welcome one at that.
