Ratings and Reviews

Great App awful service

If I were just reviewing the app then I would give it 5 stars all day long. The rating for the service they offer would be 1 star. The bus will be late 90% of the time. My daughter uses the bus regularly for a 9 mile trip to school and back. She’s quite often left waiting for a bus for 30 to 40 minutes in the cold and the rain. You can see the bus not moving on the app a mile away not moving. Occasionally they will put their out of service sign on as they pass the school kids . But you can see on the app they then stop to pick up other passengers. When we looked at the school Stagecoach had a stand there and they told us how they would provide a reliable service and look after our children. I have complained to the help desk and promised a reply but have never had one and when I ring back they tell me that they have closed the case . Stagecoach you are running a dreadful service in the Eastbourne Hastings area and don’t deserve the contact.

Ok-ish App, Horrific Service

Stagecoach’s app is alright. Arrival times are always different depending on whether you look at the bus or the stop, which is confusing. The actual service, on the other hand, is easily the worst I have ever seen from any company (in general—not just transit). In the morning, arrival times are fairly accurate and the bus comes as expected. Afternoon and evening service is horrible. On two separate occasions, I’ve been left without a bus outside in the cold wind and rain for over an hour; once for an hour and a half, and once this evening for *two and a half hours*!!! It’s gotten me home after dark when it’s no longer safe for me to walk home alone. Major safety issue for me. The second time, this was only solved because I eventually found a taxi, and the bus still had not arrived; It passed in the opposite direction three times in the opposite direction and didn’t return. The one that *did* come the right way—which the app said would stop at my stop—drove right by with the “out of service” sign on. I’m planning on finding an alternative so I never have to use this service again. I already have fairly limited free time due to my job, and I really can’t afford to spend hours of it waiting for buses that don’t come on time—if at all.

Has the potential to be good…

See, the problems here are twofold; the app itself is NOT optimised and even when it’s just left in the background it eats battery like a horse that’s got into the feed shed. But that could be forgiven if it would just stop being so completely random with bus times! The 79 is coming at quarter past. No, half past. No actually it’s the 300 now and the 79 is coming at quarter past again. Now it’s twenty past and it still says due at quarter past and oh now it’s gone from the screen entirely! Find the 79 on the road and tap on it and hey it says it’ll get there at half past. Except it doesn’t. The 79 doesn’t actually exist anymore but there is another one in forty-five minutes… maybe. How about instead of live tracking, it just ticks off the stops it’s already done? Less data to mess up then, and then you know it’s definitely coming and you’re not just following a inexistent dot on the screen!

Kidical Mass returns for 2024

Kidical Mass Exeter is holding its seventh family bike ride as part of a month of global action to promote safe cycling routes for children, young people and families.

Leigh Curtis

Kidical Mass Exeter returns for a group bike ride on Saturday 20 April as part of a month of global action to promote safe cycling routes for children, young people and families.

The ride will set off from Southernhay at 11am and take a turn through Exeter’s streets.

Everyone is welcome to join the ride whether or not they have children.

Kidical Mass riders

The event is designed to create a safe environment for families and friends to cycle together while highlighting the need for cycling routes that enable children and young people to travel safely and independently wherever they live.

It is intended to demonstrate that besides being fun, streets that keep children and cyclists safe work for everyone.

It also aims to promote a healthier, lower carbon future in which active travel modes are the norm.

Kidical Mass High Street

The first Kidical Mass took place in 2008 in Eugene, Oregon, and has since become a worldwide celebration of cycling with events taking place around the globe.

More than 40 UK rides are planned during the month of Kidical Mass activity, in places including Brighton, Cardiff, London, Manchester, Norwich, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Inverness.

In Europe, events will take place in dozens of towns and cities including Paris, Brussels, Barcelona, Rome, Berlin and Vienna. There will also be rides in Canada, Ecuador, Argentina, Australia and the US.

230,000 people around the world took part in over 900 Kidical Mass rides in 2023.

Kidical Mass Exeter is at 11am on Saturday 20 April 2024. Visit the Kidical Mass Exeter website to find out more and get involved.

Why not discover the famous cities of Exeter or Plymouth from the comfort of a Stagecoach bus?

The historic city of Exeter sits in the heart of Devon and boasts a beautiful Norman cathedral, vibrant shopping centre and picturesque quayside.

A trip to this cultural haven will take you from the depths of the 14th-century underground passages to the heights of award-winning shopping centres and eateries across The High Street, Princesshay and The Guildhall.

Exeter’s Fore Street also offers a variety of independent shops for those looking for something different.

The city’s free Royal Albert Memorial Museum boasts a range of stunning exhibitions, while the historic quayside hosts watersports, antiques and a variety of cafes and restaurants for a leisurely lunch.

The new leisure centre St Sidwell's Point is situated right next to Exeter’s new bus station, so the grandkids can enjoy the new state-of-the-art pool and soft play areas.

Alternatively, you can treat yourself to a relaxing spa experience with various treatments on offer, including a sauna, drench and monsoon showers, a salt vapour room, and a fabulous roof-top terrace that's perfect for unwinding after a busy day at the shops.

Further south in Plymouth you can visit Drake Circus, one of the Westcountry's most popular shopping centres, with more than 70 stores, including big-name brands and eateries.

Or head to the Barbican and Sutton Harbour, where you'll find a vibrant mix of cobbled streets, narrow lanes and more than 200 Listed buildings, many of which are Tudor and Jacobean, as well as boutique shops, galleries, pubs and eateries.

If you fancy a short break in the city, you can take in a show at the Theatre Royal Plymouth or treat the grandkids to fun at the Plymouth Life Centre or a trip to the National Marine Aquarium.

Click here to see the routes in detail and plan your next connection.

TRAVEL DEVON

Bus Back home

On the bus – a brief guide

Taking the bus is easy once you know where you are going and what to do to catch one. Here are a few tips to make your experience go a little smoother.

Find out when the bus is coming

  • Use our Interactive bus map to see the routes in your area and to view or download timetable information.
  • Visit Traveline to plan your journey and get times for services across Devon.

How to catch the bus

You can normally catch your bus at any bus stop along its route. Please note that the timetable time is the time when the bus is due to depart or pass the stop if no-one is there, so make sure that you get to the stop a few minutes before the bus is due. When the bus approaches the route number and destination will be shown on the front. To catch the bus, put your hand out in good time for the driver to see you.

Paying your fare

When you get on the bus you need to tell the driver where you want to go and what type of ticket you would like.

Most companies accept contactless payments to buy tickets on their buses. Bus drivers can’t accept cheques, debit or credit cards, so if contactless is not available you’ll need to carry some cash. It’s useful to keep some change with you also, as the driver might not have enough change for large notes.

Stopping the bus

When you want to get off the bus, press the bell in good time before the stop. If you’re not sure where the stops are, you can always ask the driver to tell you when your stop is coming up.

Remember, it’s safer to stay in your seat and wait for the bus to stop before getting up.

Children under 5 travel free – those aged 5 to 15 can normally buy reduced single and return fares.

Dogs are generally permitted on buses at the absolute discretion of the driver. Guide dogs and assistance dogs are permitted at all times. There is normally a small charge for taking your dog on the bus.

Mobility scooters

Find out about taking your mobility scooter or wheelchair on the bus .

Bicycles are not generally permitted on buses for health and safety reasons, however, this is at the absolute discretion of each bus operator.

If you are hoping to travel by bus with your bike, you may wish to contact the local bus operator of the service you wish to travel on to ask about their policy on bikes on buses.

Different types of ticket

Single – Only going one way? Ask for a single. Prices vary depending on the length of the journey.

Day return – If you are coming back on the same day ask for a day return, it’s cheaper than buying two singles.

Other tickets – Most bus companies offer season tickets or money saving tickets. You can buy weekly tickets from the driver and get monthly tickets from the bus station.

If you are thinking about making regular journeys – check what’s available with the operator, or see how to save money on our tickets page.

Need a little extra help?

The Devon Access Wallet makes catching buses and trains easier for anyone with communication difficulties, people with disabilities, deaf people and those whose first language is not English. It will also give bus and train staff a better understanding of the requirements of all disabled passengers. Find out more, including how to apply, on the Access Wallet page.

Stagecoach SW confirm details of free travel weekends in Exeter

Stagecoach South West have confirmed details on the upcoming days of free bus travel within the Exeter Plus travel zone.

Following the recent decision of the Traffic Commissioner, bus journeys will be free over the weekends of Saturday the 10th and Sunday 11th of December and Saturday the 17th and Sunday 18th of December 2022. Customers will not require a ticket for travel in this area on these dates.

Stagecoach South West Managing Director Mike Watson said: ‘We deeply regret the level of service experienced by some of our passengers in recent months. Moving forward, our priority is to build on the extensive steps we have been taking to drive up the reliability of our services for our local communities. We are committed to working with our local authority partners to ensure these improvements continue and are sustained.”

Free travel is valid within the Exeter Plus travel Zone, which encompasses journeys across Exeter and within the boundaries of Ottery St Mary, Cullompton, Bickleigh, Crediton, Okehampton, Whitestone, Longdown, Kennford, Teignmouth, Exton, Woodbury, Woodbury Salterton, Nine Oaks Cross and Exmouth excluding Sandy Bay.

Over the course of the two travel weekends customers will not be required to purchase a ticket within the free travel zone. Mobile tickets are valid for 3 months until they require activated, however once activated are valid until 4am on the day after activation.  Stagecoach urge customers with a pre purchased day ticket to save this for use when tickets are required.
