Pipers and drummers needed for tour of germany / fin’s sessions.

pipe band tours

Pipers and drummers are required urgently to participate in this year’s Scottish Music Parade tours of Germany.

This will be the tenth year of the popular shows that play to large and appreciative audiences all around the country.

Each concert last approximately two hours and features a mixture of modern and traditional pieces, including pipe bands, highland dancers and a celtic/folk band.

There are seven tours in total: October 1-6, October 16-23, October 24-29, November 3-11, December 4-9, and December 14-18.

Organiser, Fife-based piper Steven Dewar, said: “The tours began in 2011 and we have performed over 200 gigs in Germany and throughout Europe.

“This year, we will be playing in some stunning venues throughout Germany, including Bavaria, Saxony, Brandenburg, Westphalia and Thuringia. Due to COVID-19 restrictions our audience numbers are capped at 1,200 people.

“We take a 30-piece pipe band on each tour but individual pipers and drummers can join in for the shows. A band fee is payable per concert. Between the fee and merchandise there is a serious opportunity for a pipe band to generate a significant amount of income. In the case of a hybrid band consisting of two bands or a collection of individuals the fee is split per player.”

Flights and hotel accommodation are included. Any PCR tests required are also covered. No visa is required.

Mr Dewar [pictured] added: “We strive to produce first class concerts, and the show is well acclaimed in Germany. At the same time we like to deliver this, by making the experience as fun as we can for the bands and individuals. The focus is very much on fun whilst touring and making sure everyone has a good time. If any bands or individuals can make any of these tours they should contact me as soon as possible.”

Well-known Perthshire bellows piper, Fin Moore is holding a series of online lessons in a group ‘session’ format. These follow on from a series of six sessions that took place last winter and a series of four ‘review’ sessions held this summer.

pipe band tours

The sessions – four of them – will run in the evenings of September 4, October 9, November 13 and December 11 and a wide variety of music will be covered. The medium used will be the Zoom videoconference software.

Fin said: “The sessions are aimed at two levels: an intermediate, slower paced one and one for more advanced players which will cover tunes with faster tempos. I’ll be leading all the sessions but we’ll have Gary West, Sarah Hoy, Angus MacKenzie and Brìghde Chaimbeul joining for the advanced group.

“Audio and manuscript files of the tunes are sent out before hand. The autumn sessions will review some of the past sets plus some new sets plus a performance session for folk who fancy that.”

The cost is £38.32 or £43.71 for the performance session option.

Scot Symphonic Band to kick off annual tour with concert March 3

Scot Symphonic Band

The College of Wooster’s Scot Symphonic B and and Pipe Band will perform at McGaw Chapel (340 E. University Street) on Sunday, March 3 at 3 p.m., the opening concert of the bands’ 47th annual tour. The bands will present “An American Child, ” an immersive program of music and poetry that explores the experience of how growing up in the United States has evolved over the past century .

The concert will feature two featured student artists, soprano Anya Smith ’24 and speaker Cam Love ’25, who will present selected poetry by Maya Angelou, Amanda Gorman, and Dudley Randall. The concert will include the music of David Maslanka, Eric Whitacre, Kimberly Archer, and Evan Williams. This concert also marks the first time the Scot Symphonic Band will perform works by award-winning composers Adolphus Hailstork and John Corigliano.

Directed by Jeffrey D. Gershman, the band is the premier wind ensemble at the College and has entertained audiences nationwide during its annual spring tour since 1976. Rooted in a deep belief in the importance of inclusive programming, Scot Symphonic Band performances draw both from the cornerstones of the wind literature and the finest contemporary works.

Gershman is in his second year as the Director of Bands at Wooster. He also serves as the director of the Wooster Concert Band, assistant director of the Scot Marching Band, and teaches courses in conducting and music education. He previously served on the faculties at Capital University, Indiana University, and Texas A&M University-Commerce. Gershman holds a Bachelor of Music Education and the first Master of Music in Wind Conducting degree conferred by the Indiana University. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting from The University of Texas at Austin.

There is no admission fee for the performance. For more information, contact the Department of Music at 330-263-2419 or [email protected] .

Pipers lament as Sir Paul McCartney drops Mull of Kintyre from the setlist for his world tour’s only Scottish show

Paul McCartney performing in Dundee, 1975 (DC Thomson)

HE famously sang about how his desire was always to be there.

But Paul McCartney has chosen not to always play his hit Mull Of Kintyre and has dropped it from the setlist for his world tour’s only Scots show.

His decision emerged after Kintyre Schools Pipe Band asked if they might join him on stage to perform the hit.

The band is led by Ian McKerral who performed with the now defunct Campbeltown Pipe Band on the original Mull Of Kintyre single 41 years ago.

It became Wings’ and Sir Paul’s biggest ever single hit as well as a Christmas No 1.

But it won’t be heard when Sir Paul takes to the stage at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on Friday.

When he last played Scotland in 2010, the star used the pipe band from Loretto School in Musselburgh for the Hampden Park concert.

In Australia last year, Sir Paul used the Western Australia Police Pipe Band but sources close the former Beatle said the tune will not be played in Glasgow or anywhere else.

Mr McKerral, pipe major of Kintyre Schools Pipe Band and the schools’ piping tutor in South Kintyre, was just 16 when he played on the song.

He contacted Sir Paul’s team to offer the services of the schools band – which has 55 members, aged betwen 12 and 18 – for the gig.

“We got an email back from one of McCartney’s team saying they are not using a pipe band in Glasgow,” he said.

“The youngsters are fine about it.

“We kept the request quiet and it would have been a nice surprise for the band.

“Maybe it will be possible sometime in the future.”

Earlier this year, Sir Paul’s daughter Stella used the pipe band for her latest fashion collection.

Stella filmed her Winter 2018 advertising campaign in Kintyre, where she spent part of her childhood.

Sir Paul has had High Park Farm on Kintyre for more than 50 years.

He previously said his late first wife Linda “was in love with the whole idea of Scotland.”

“She said, ‘You’ve got a place in Scotland, haven’t you?’

“I said, ‘Yeah,’ so she she said, ‘Let’s go’. So, OK, we went up,” he said.

“I love the place. We spent a lot of time there and we raised our kids there.

“Years later I was thinking there hadn’t been any new Scottish songs – all the songs the Scottish pipe bands play are old songs – I could not think of anything that was a new Scottish song.

“So I thought, well maybe I should try and write one.

“I knew Campbeltown had a pipe band, so I said let me get in touch with the leader of the pipes and talk to him.”

And when the Campbeltown Pipe Band got to play the song, Sir Paul was amazed.

“They started playing. It was a fantastic sound, a very emotional sound. Loud, very loud. In a few takes they had it,” he said.

“I said one thing. I know these guys liked to drink so I said we won’t drink before the session because it could go horribly wrong.

“Let’s break out the drinks when we got the take. So sure enough we got this great take – its the one you hear on the record – so we broke out the McEwan’s, the beer.

“So we were all having a celebratory drink. They were all standing around beaming – they had not been in a recording studio before.

“They were all loving this whole track coming out of the speakers. It was a fantastic evening as you can imagine.

“Everybody got very merry and very happy with the results.”

Tribute to place where a Beatle found peace

The Campbeltown Pipe Band became the most famous pipe band in the world on the back of the release.

They were even specially asked for to play at the 2003 Isle of Bute wedding of Sir Paul’s daughter Stella and Alasdhair Willis.

Strangely, there was just one request – DON’T play Mull Of Kintyre.

Mull Of Kintyre was written by Paul McCartney and Denny Laine and released by Wings as a single in 1977.

Sir Paul’s 18th solo single eventually sold 2.5 million copies in the UK – which means over 1 in 30 people then bought it – and has total global sales of more than six million copies.

It stayed at the top of the charts for an incredible nine weeks over Christmas, 1977.

The 21 bagpipers were each paid the standard musicians’ union fee but after the tune hit No 1, Sir Paul sent off a cheque for £200 to each of the pipers.

The song is a tribute to the Kintyre Peninsula where Paul and his wife Linda had a farm.

The Mull is the area at the tip of the peninsula, known for its beautiful scenery and tranquil atmosphere.

After a difficult breakup with The Beatles, McCartney went there to avoid the media spotlight.

The pipes were recorded outside in the open air and Laine thinks that gave it a special sound that couldn’t have been found in a music studio.

St. Patrick's Day in Memphis: 7 things to do, from parades to an evil 'Leprechaun'

pipe band tours

"My methods are new and are causing surprise. To make the blind see I throw dust in their eyes"

So wrote the great Irish novelist James Joyce, in his landmark of 1922, "Ulysses."

Here at The Commercial Appeal, however, we try to clear things up. We don't throw dust in your eyes, but we do toss out a few facts. In this case, facts relating to Memphis' celebration of the feast day devoted to the patron saint of Joyce's homeland, St. Patrick.

People speak of "the luck of the Irish." Seven, traditionally, is a lucky number. So here is a list of a lucky seven suggestions — from the family-friendly to the bar-based — for those looking to commemorate St. Patrick this weekend.

'St. Patrick and the Snakes'

11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, March 16; Lichterman Nature Center, 5992 Quince

The beer isn't the only thing that's green this weekend, as the Lichterman center invites nature lovers and curious folks of all ages to get up close-and-personal with some reptiles of the type that the Patron Saint of Ireland is alleged to have expelled from the Emerald Isle 15 centuries ago. Of course, biologists today know that snakes, in general, should be protected rather than exterminated, so this meet-a-snake event is an attempt at reducing anti-snake bias and encouraging inter-species harmony. To quote the Lichterman website: "Did St. Patrick really drive all the snakes out of Ireland? How do you identify venomous snakes? Why are snake beneficial? Learn the answers to these questions and more while meeting some of the Nature Center’s ambassador snakes."

For details, visit moshmemphis.com/event/meet-a-snake .

Silky Sullivan St. Patrick's Parade

2 p.m. Saturday, March 16; Beale Street Historic District

A celebration of Irish culture (also: green beer) now in its 51st year, this festive procession of floats, dignitaries, dance squads, music-makers, Shriners, sports mascots, "Sassy Seniors" and more will be led this year by a new "King" who also is a new mayor, Paul Young. The parade is named in honor of the city's most dedicated "Irishman," the late Thomas "Silky" Sullivan, whose namesake bar on Beale is a successor to his longtime Overton Square establishment, which was among the bases for "Irish Eyes of Memphis," the loose affiliation of bar owners and restaurateurs who established the parade a half-century ago.

For details, visit facebook.com/events/330440286485942 .

SILKY O'SULLIVAN'S: Why a Beale Street pub has goats (and why they don't drink beer anymore)

Cooper-Young St. Patrick's Day Parade

2 p.m. Sunday, March 17

Presented by the Memphis Irish Society (which will give away lots of "parade swag" to attendees), this family-friendly event features decorated floats and costumes in what promoters call "a joyous celebration of Irish heritage, Memphis community unity, and the luck of the Irish." The parade begins at York and proceeds south along Cooper to Walker. Promises the Society: "Get ready for a sea of green and a wave of Irish spirit."

For details, visit facebook.com/miscystpatparade .

Celtic Crossing concerts

Sunday, March 17; Celtic Crossing Pub & Restaurant, 903 S. Cooper

Those who wish to spend time in the Cooper-Young neighborhood before and after the parade might want to visit the pub that promises "the most authentic Irish experience in the Mid-South." The music menu begins with Sarah Spain at 1 p.m., followed by Adam Heart at 4 and Twin Soul at 7. Also on tap: "Chances at winning prizes from the Leprechaun's Treasure Chest."

For details, visit facebook.com/celticcrossingirishpub .

THINGS TO DO IN MEMPHIS: 8 Memphis food events you shouldn't miss, from Black Restaurant Week to wine tastings

'Dead Irish Blues'

3-6 p.m. Sunday, March 17; Huey's Midtown, 1927 Madison

The veteran Memphis music combo of Marty Faiers (fiddle), Greg Faiers (guitar/octave mandolin/vocals) and Jimmy Crosthwait (washboard and [no doubt priceless] commentary) will celebrate St. Paddy's Day with a three-set show devoted to songs about "love, war, beer, death and whiskey," according to Huey's.

For details visit, tinyurl.com/msratcw2 .

Memphis Pipe Band

5-7 p.m. Sunday, March 17; Overton Square

Performing classic Celtic songs on bagpipes and percussion, this combo will perform in the outdoor "Chimes Square" courtyard, on the south side of Overton Square. Jig-dancing is welcome. (But those who would rather dance the funky chicken also are welcome.)

For details, visit tinyurl.com/22ybv6sz .

'Leprechaun' Movie Party

5 p.m. Sunday, March 17; Black Lodge, 405 N. Cleveland

In what has become a gleefully ghoulish St. Patrick's Day tradition, the city's most culterrific venue (part movie rental shop, part screening room, part concert hall, part restaurant-and-bar) hosts a triple feature from the infamous "Leprechaun" franchise, all starring 3-foot-6 British actor Warwick ("Willow") Davis as the wisecracking, gold-coveting, teen-slaying title imp. The Emerald Isle-inspired evil begins with "Leprechaun" (1993), which features a pre-"Friends" Jennifer Aniston as a victim; next is the futuristic "Leprechaun in Space" (1997), followed by "Leprechaun in the Hood" (2000). According to the Black Lodge Facebook page: "This is no silent screening, people. Razzing, riffing, mocking, and drunken yelling at the screen is highly encouraged."
