Best Times to Take a Nile Cruise (Aswan–Luxor)

Spring and autumn cruises are best, since you get warm sun, comfortable nights, and comfortable touring weather. For ideal temperatures we suggest that you go in the fall between the end of September to the end of November, or go in the spring from March to early May.

Summer is too hot for many and winter is too crowded for optimal cruise enjoyment. Seasonal weather analysis follows, best seasons first.

The weather is about the same in Luxor and Aswan because these two cities are only about 180 kilometers or 112 miles away from each other in a straight line. You could drive the distance in a little more than 3 hours. Aswan is further south and is generally a little warmer.

Spring Cruises (March to Early May Suggested)

In big contrast from the cold chills of January and the blasting heat of August, in March and April, in Aswan, the days are comfortable, dry, and sunny.  Daytime temperatures are about 31°C (88°F) or above, and at night, the temperatures drop to a comfortable low of about 13°C (55°F). There is 0% chance of rain.

In May, the temperatures become like summer. There is also a little more rainfall in Aswan. In Luxor, the weather ranges between a 39°C (103°F) and a low of 22°C (72°F). This is ideal weather for swimming in cruise ship pools. Note, there are larger tourist crowds around Easter.

What to Wear in Spring

During the days, remember that the solar radiation is intense. The sun shines off the water and from the cliffs or dunes along the shore. So, when you are on deck and go on excursion, try to cover your skin with loose and thin cotton fabric. Wear sunglasses and a sunhat. In the evenings, a light jacket should be enough.

Moisturizers and keeping hydrated are needed in the desert areas around Aswan and Luxor, as humidity is very low and it will feel dry. Cairo has more normal humidity, for if you cruise that far.

Autumn Cruises (October and November Suggested)

Fall is a good cruising season as well.  In the daytime in October, temperatures might reach a high of about 37°C (98°F), and then the temperatures continue to fall in November. The nightly lows might reach 21°C (69°F) in October. There is 0% chance of rain.

What to Wear in Autumn

During daytime, remember that the solar radiation is intense. Try to cover your skin with loose and thin cotton fabric or sun cream. Wear sunglasses and a sunhat. In the evenings, a light jacket should be enough. Again, keep well hydrated, and consider lip balm and moisturizer.

Summer Cruises (June–September) — Maybe Too Hot

June, July, and August are much the same:  dry, sunny and with average highs of 42°C (108°F) and lows of 25°C (78°F). It is hot, dry, and breezy. Most foreign tourists do not like the heat of Egyptian summers. If you like dry heat, then you might enjoy a summer cruise. The highs are in the 40s °C (middle 100s °F) and the lows at night are comfortable in the middle 20s °C (70s °F).

Septembers are hot.  The highs in September are still hot at around 41°C (105°F), but the nights are comfortable with lows of around 23°C (74°F).

What to Wear in Summer

Again, remember that the solar radiation is intense, and employ the protection mentioned above to protect your skin: clothing, hat, sun screen... Lip balm, moisturizer, and good hydration are highly advised.

Winter Cruises (December, January, February) — Very Popular

We suggest avoiding December, January, and February since they are too popular. For example, in January, the highs are a cool 24°C (75°F). This is cool for sunbathing and for outdoor sightseeing. The most pleasant weather is also the peak season when many travelers choose to travel to Egypt. Avoid the busy holidays of Christmas and New Year, because it is a high tourist season for cruises and may cost you more.

See our handpicked itineraries for various durations: 5 days , 7 days , 10 days , 12 days , 14 days and 21 days ...

What to Wear in Winter

Remember warm clothes for cruising in winter, especially coats and trousers for going on deck in the evenings and early mornings. There is less need for sun protection. Moisturizers and keeping hydrated are still needed in desert areas around Aswan and Luxor.

Humidity is higher in the winter, rising to 40%, but this is still on the dry side for most people, so take care of skin hydration as needed.

Sights along the Way between Aswan and Luxor

Main attractions in aswan.

  • The Aswan Dam:  It is a 20-minute drive south from Aswan. The dam is about 111 meters (364 feet) tall and 3 kilometers (2 miles) wide. It is one of the biggest dams in the world.
  • Philae Temple and Abu Simbel:  These two temples were moved to their present locations when the Aswan Dam was built.
  • Kom Ombo:  About 23 miles north of Aswan is a stone temple that was built in the period 180–47 BC. It is a stop for Nile cruises.

Main Attractions in the Temple of Edfu

As you are sailing north from Aswan, about 64 km (40 miles) north of Kom Ombo or 124 km (77 miles) north of Aswan, you can reach the Temple of Edfu. Boats dock and horses and carriages offer rides for customers. Some cruises stop both at Kom Ombo and Edfu. The Edfu necropolis is about three kilometers (2 miles) west of the west bank of the Nile.

Edfu is in an out of the way area about 115 kilometers (60 miles) south of Luxor, so seeing it by cruise boat is convenient. The Temple of Edfu and the Temple of Dendera are the most complete and the best-preserved ancient temple structures in Egypt.

Main Attractions in the Temple of Dendera

The Temple of Dendera is about 1½ hours from Luxor by road, about 60 km (40 miles) away. It is also visited by tourists during a Nile cruise, since it is only about 4 km (2.5 miles) from the Nile. If you take a cruise between Luxor and Aswan, many tours will also feature a trip to Dendera because it is very impressive and takes up an area of two city blocks. There are many things to see including a Roman Gateway of Domitian and Trajan, a Roman Mammisi, and the main building in the complex. It is noted for having original paintings and inscriptions that are still clear and colorful.

Main Attractions in the Temple of Esna

Further north along the Nile is the Temple of Esna. It's located about 100 meters (110 yards) west of the west bank. It is one of the newer temples that tourists visit. The temple was completed during the reign of Emperor Decius (249-–251 AD). There is a hall of columns, and recent archaeological work has uncovered some art and images that can now be seen. Most cruise boats stop there, except some tours traveling south from Luxor. It is about 55 minutes from Luxor by vehicle.

Main Attractions in Luxor

  • Luxor Temple:  It is thought that construction started in the 14th century BC. The construction was continued by Ramses II. There are huge pylons and obelisks. The Luxor Temple is about 3 km (2 miles) from Karnak Temple. Both Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple are on the east side of the Nile.
  • Karnak Temple: It is a big collection of ruins, ancient buildings, statues, and obelisks that were built over a thousand-year period. It is a huge place. The Hypostyle Hall consists of 134 columns. Ramses II is thought to have built most of the hall. The Obelisk of Hatshepsut is the second biggest of all the ancient Egyptian obelisks, and it is about 30 meters (98 feet) tall. The historical inscriptions are important. The conquest of Israel is listed in detail.
  • Hot Air Balloon:  This is a great way to get a grand view of the whole Valley of the Kings at one time. There, you see the Queen Hatshepsut mortuary in front of a big cliff. If the winds are right, you see the Colossi of Memnon too. These flights usually leave at or before dawn, and they last about an hour. People enjoy seeing the whole region including the sugarcane fields.

For ballooning, the best time of year is from November  to March . The mornings are cold in the late fall, winter, and early spring, and the higher altitude and breezes are cold. Be sure to bring a good warm coat and warm hat if you are flying in the cold weather.

What's the best time of year to do Nile cruise?

Recently updated on August 1st, 2023 at 04:53 pm

As the longest river on Earth and a cradle of civilisation, the Nile is a true bucket-list destination. Its mystical waters are lined with Egypt’s ancient past, with spectacular tombs, temples and the riches of the pharaohs. If you really want to get to the heart of Ancient Egypt, there’s nothing quite like a Nile river cruise. As you drift along the river, you’ll stop off at all the unforgettable highlights including Luxor, Aswan, Philae Island and Kom-Ombo.  If you want to make a Nile river cruise the centrepiece of your Egypt holiday , you’ll likely have a few questions about how to get the most out of your trip. Read on to find out everything, from what to wear to the best time of year to cruise the mighty Nile.

Best time to do a Nile cruise

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Experience Egypt (@experienceegypt) on Jun 14, 2018 at 8:16am PDT

The best time to cruise the Nile river is between October and April. During these months the weather is not too hot, meaning you can get the most out of your day trips to the iconic sights from Luxor to Aswan.

If you cruise the Nile during the peak summer months from June to August, prepare for intense heat around 40°C and even hotter temperatures inside the tombs. There isn’t much shade around the region to escape the midday sun, so choose your Nile cruise dates wisely!

On the flip side, if you don’t like cooler weather, you may prefer to avoid the months of November to February, as the nights can get quite chilly. Overall, the optimum months weather-wise to cruise the Nile are from February to April and September to November.

How long should you cruise for?

Depending on your budget and what you want to see, most Nile cruises last for anywhere from three to seven nights. A short three-night cruise will take you to the main highlights, including Aswan, Kom-Ombo and Luxor, while the four-night option will add an extra stop like the temples of Edfu.

If you go for the week-long cruise, you’ll get to take in all the main attractions and beyond, including the jaw-dropping Dendera Temple and extra time in Aswan, Philae, Kom-Ombo and Luxor.

What do you wear on a Nile cruise?

The most important thing to remember when choosing what to wear on a Nile cruise, is to dress not just for the heat, but also the Egyptian culture. As a conservative Muslim country, you’ll need to respect the local customs by avoiding short skirts, shorts and tops, and see-through clothing.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Experience Egypt (@experienceegypt) on Dec 4, 2019 at 9:27am PST

When visiting mosques, you will need to cover both your legs and upper arms. It’s generally best to wear light, loose clothing that covers your shoulders, chest, stomach, back and thighs, and this will help protect you from the heat too. We recommend bringing a light scarf or pashmina as it’s easy to throw around your shoulders, and shields you from both the heat and the cooler nighttime temperatures.

As for shoes, you’ll likely be doing plenty of walking over uneven stone flooring and sandy terrain, so you’ll need comfortable walking shoes. It’s usually best to bring sturdy walking sandals, as it can get too hot for closed shoes.

What to pack for a Nile cruise?

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Experience Egypt (@experienceegypt) on Mar 25, 2020 at 12:34pm PDT

Besides your clothes, you’ll also need to pack a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a day bag, bug spray, hand sanitiser, tissues, a camera and extra SD cards. Be sure to bring any medications you’ll need, plus handy extras like painkillers and anti-diarrhoea tablets.

Will I get motion sickness on a Nile cruise?

If you’re prone to queasiness, you should consider booking a cabin that is higher up on the boat. The higher up you are, the less motion you’ll contend with. It’s also a good idea to bring anti-motion sickness tablets like Dramamine.

Where can I go on a Nile cruise?

Here are some of the top places you’ll visit on a Nile cruise with Trafalgar.

In Luxor, you’ll journey to the ancient Valley of the Kings, the final resting place of Egypt’s Pharaohs. Learn about the great pharaohs and their riches and the remarkable construction of the temples. We’ll visit the Grand Temple of Luxor, the Colossi of Menon, and the mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut.

You’ll have the chance to connect with locals with a traditional ‘Be My Guest’ treat. Enjoy freshly baked bread with honey and mint tea in the archaeological paradise of Luxor’s West Bank.

Planning the Ultimate Egyptian Adventure: Nile Cruise Tips

The Nile River is one of the most famous places in the world.

And there is no better way to see Egypt than by floating down the river, stopping as the most iconic and breathtaking ancient sites along the way .

Choosing to cruise allows you to chill and take in the amazing views from the roof deck as you pass villages, farms, feluccas, and gorgeous desert landscapes.

Read this to discover all the tips and tricks to make the most of your ultimate Egyptian adventure on a Nile cruise.

Can you cruise the Nile River?

Yes! And in fact, cruising the Nile is the ultimate way to see Egypt . Without the cruise, it would be very difficult to access some of these monuments and you would be spending a ton of time in the car.

Cruising the Nile is not only a more efficient way to sightsee Egypt, it is stress-free as well. The tours are set and the food is prepared for you; all you need to do is show up and lay on the roof deck ordering drinks from the waiter.

Most cruises begin in Aswan and cruise north to Luxor . The Nile River is dammed just south of Aswan so you obviously cannot cruise that way. However if you really wanted to, there are some cruises that sail around Nasser Lake, the reservoir created by the dam.

How do you select a Nile cruise? Read these 5 important tips to choose the best Nile cruise.

Nile Cruise Tips

nile cruise weather

The Best Month for a Nile Cruise

Summers in Egypt can be brutal, averaging temperatures over 100 F. If you don’t want to wither away in the desert heat, November through March is the ideal time to do a Nile River cruise.

The winter months however, are also the high season for tourism due to the ideal weather conditions. Braving the heat and going in the summer (May to September) can mean discounted cruises and tours, as well as less crowds overall.

I personally think the fall and spring months , October-November and March-April, are the best months to do a Nile Cruise. It’s still on the warm side, but being on the river feels much cooler, and many of the tours actually take place in the mornings and evenings.

We did our cruise in the middle of November and it was colder than I expected, but not cold enough to need a jacket or anything. And our last day of sightseeing in Luxor ended up being quite hot. I usually wore pants and a sweater at night, and a shirt with a light scarf during the day.

If you plan to visit any other parts of Egypt, like the Red Sea , spring and fall are the ideal times there as well.

What to Pack for a Nile Cruise

The biggest piece of advice I can give here: layers.

The way the tour itinerary is set up, mornings and evenings are the prime times for visiting the historic sites, while the afternoons are spent cruising down the Nile.

Especially if you choose the winter months to do the cruise, mornings and evenings get pretty chilly . Chilling on the roof deck on a sunny afternoon on the river can get brisk as well if the wind picks up, and I found the inside of the boat and our room to be a very cold (I think that was partially user-error as we couldn’t figure out the AC).

In contrast, the summers can be extremely hot. So even if it’s nice out in the mornings, you’ll want to make sure you can remove layers during the afternoon .

Some other important things to pack include a swimming suit (for the roof deck pool), mosquito repellent, and a hat.

nile cruise weather

Myth: You must dress very conservatively in Egypt

Egypt is a predominately Muslim and conservative society. However in these highly touristic areas, there is no expectation to dress overly conservative. I wore a crop top around Luxor when one hot day and no one batted an eye.

You may choose to dress more ‘covered up’ regardless to stay warm in the winter months, but there’s no need to go out of your way to dress a certain way , especially if it’s hot out.

Can you Work Remote on a Nile Cruise?

Working remote from the roof deck of a Nile River cruise sounds dreamy. Unfortunately it might just stay a dream. In our experience on a Nile cruise, the WIFI situation is not ideal for working .

WIFI is not free on the cruise ships; you can purchase 1 or 2 gigs at a time at the reception desk. Not only is it pretty pricey – 2 gigs for $8 – but the WIFI was only usable on one deck of the ship. It didn’t reach our room, the dining room, or the roof deck.

If we ever did want to use the WIFI, we had to go to the lounge and it was still quite slow . It wouldn’t be a bad place to get some work done since it was practically deserted during the day. But it’s a shame you can’t sit on the roof deck taking in the views as you cruise down the Nile.

I’ve head that some ships don’t even have WIFI, but I can’t imagine that being the case in 2023.

There is quite a bit on down time between sightseeing tours if you really need to get something done. But if you require a lot of WIFI or need super reliable speeds, it’s best to just take time off and get off the grid for a few days.

Are Nile River Cruises Safe?

As a guest on a Nile Cruise, not only are you catered to the entire time with 5 star service, but you are shepherded around Egypt by a trained and experienced tour guide.

Of course some guides are more trustworthy than others, but on my Nile Cruise I felt very safe and trusted my guide completely. He would give us little tips and tricks at every stop, and even told us how to avoid scams.

If you are off by yourself, the only real ‘danger’ is falling into a tourist scam where the main objective is getting your money. Tourists naturally look like walking dollar signs. Some common traps many tourists fall into include:

  • Offering to take your picture, then demanding payment after.
  • Someone besides your tour guide telling you about the history or location, or offering to show you something.
  • Giving you something to hold or for ‘free’ (nothing is free).
  • Charging you way too much for souvenirs – always haggle the price down.
  • People saying “I know your tour guide” or “I’m a cook on your cruise ship”, etc… beware!
  • Merchants striking up a conversation with you and asking you a bunch of questions to trap you so you’ll buy something.

Not everyone in Egypt is trying to scam you, of course, but the ones that do all hang out near these highly touristic areas . My best tactic is to act oblivious and unobservant if anyone tries to interact with me or show me anything.

nile cruise weather

I just keep walking, smile vaguely, don’t make eye contact, act like I didn’t hear them, and continue on my very important mission that doesn’t involve them.

Almost like dad who is distracted thinking about work and only partially notices his kids are trying to get his attention. Many times I don’t even respond verbally because the language you speak can be used to get your attention even more.

One more “scam” to be aware of happens when the cruise goes through the locks. A bunch of little souvenir pirates will swarm the boat selling all kinds of things. If you want to partake, do it only for the story.

It’s actually really funny how they throw things up to the roof deck from their little boats while yelling at you. But the things they sell are way overpriced and you can buy exact same items pretty much everywhere else, including the cruise ship gift shop, for less.

Nile Cruise Planning Tips: Before & After the Cruise

Before the cruise.

Assuming you choose the Aswan to Luxor itinerary, the start of the cruise obviously begins in Aswan. There are two options in this scenario: either stay in Aswan prior to the cruise, or fly into Aswan that morning.

Aswan is a pretty cool place and the Nubian people are known as the most chill and kind in Egypt. Most noticeably, they don’t harass you when you walk by their little stands selling trinkets and souvenirs.

Staying at a Nubian guest house on the banks of the Nile is an incredible experience, and many offer half or full board. Staying in Aswan also gives you the opportunity to visit Abu Simbel if it’s not already worked into your tour package.

If you come to Aswan for several days, you can even visit one of the famous Nubian villages or ride a felucca at sunset. Another great way to see the wonders of Aswan is to take free walking tour from a local guide!

Flying into Aswan the day of is also a good option for those short on time. Most tour operators offer pick ups straight from the airport to the cruise. Although most cruises claim to ‘start’ around noon, the cruise actually stays docked in Aswan the first night and doesn’t set sail until day 2.

Be sure to get your flight to Aswan in advance if this is your plan as the flights coming in for the cruise tend to sell out .

nile cruise weather

After the Cruise

Similar to the situation before the cruise, after the cruise you can either fly out that same day, or stay in Luxor. The cruise tour shows you the main attractions in Luxor, but there is still a ton to see including the hot air balloon, Valley of the Queens, the Luxor Museum, and a free walking tour of Luxor .

If you’d prefer to fly out as soon as possible, I’d recommend choosing an evening flight. Depending on how quickly the cruise gets to Luxor on Day 3, Karnak may get pushed to Day 4 which makes for a pretty long day. This happened to us and I believe we finished for the day around 4pm.

I’d rather have to wait around for a later flight than have to rush through the tour or stress about making it to the airport on time. There are tons of Luxor to Cairo flights, but if you want your choice of time, it’s best to book as soon as possible .

If time allows, staying one night in Luxor and flying out the next day is the best option in my opinion. That way you can experience Luxor a bit more and not stress about getting to the airport after the cruise and tours. Be sure to stay in a hotel with a rooftop!

Sailing the Nile: Things to Know About Nile Cruises - Tips for First Timers

Embarking on a Nile cruise is an experience steeped in history and wonder. As you prepare to sail down this iconic river, there are numerous facets to consider, ensuring your journey is as memorable as the ancient waterway itself.

Choosing the Right Cruise for You

Choosing the Right Cruise for You

Selecting the right Nile cruise involves balancing factors like duration, budget, and desired experiences. Most cruises operate between Luxor and Aswan, offering a range of three to seven nights onboard.

While shorter cruises pack in essential sights, longer journeys provide a deeper exploration of the Nile’s treasures. Your budget also plays a crucial role, with options ranging from affordable to luxury. Remember, the level of comfort and amenities onboard vary significantly.

Understanding the Route and Stops

Typically, a Nile cruise includes stops at key historical sites. Luxor and Aswan, the usual start and end points, are themselves rich in heritage. Between these cities, expect to visit landmarks like the Temple of Edfu and the Kom Ombo Temple.

Cruises often include guided tours at these stops, providing invaluable insights into Egypt’s ancient civilization. Check out more on Luxury Nile cruises at https://www.luxorandaswan.com/Egypt/nile-cruises/luxor-aswan-nile-cruises/Luxury-Nile-Cruises .

Season and Weather Considerations

The best time for a Nile cruise is between October and April, when the weather is milder. Summers in Egypt can be extremely hot, making sightseeing less comfortable. However, if you don’t mind the heat, summer cruises can be less crowded and more affordable.

Cultural Etiquette and Dress Code

Respect for local customs is crucial. In Egypt, conservative dress is appreciated, especially when visiting temples and other religious sites.

Lightweight, long-sleeved clothing is ideal, offering comfort against the sun while respecting cultural norms. Also, be ready to remove your shoes when entering certain sacred areas.

Life Onboard: What to Expect

Life on a Nile cruise ship is a blend of relaxation and adventure. Most ships offer comfortable cabins, sun decks, dining areas, and sometimes swimming pools and entertainment options.

Meals are usually included, giving you a taste of both international and local cuisine. However, don’t expect the same entertainment options as large ocean liners; Nile cruises are more about the journey and the sights.

Navigating the Language Barrier

While major tourist spots and cruise staff often speak English, learning a few basic Arabic phrases can enhance your experience. Simple words like “hello” (As-salamu alaykum), “thank you” (Shukran), and “yes/no” (Na’am/La) can go a long way in connecting with locals.

Staying Connected and Safe

Staying Connected and Safe on Nile Cruises

Wi-Fi availability varies on Nile cruises. Some ships offer it for free, others for a fee, and some might not have it at all. For safety, always drink bottled water and stay vigilant about personal belongings, especially in crowded tourist areas. It’s wise to follow any safety guidelines provided by your cruise line.

Exploring Beyond the Cruise Itinerary

While your cruise will cover many key attractions, consider extending your stay in Egypt to visit Cairo’s pyramids or the coastal city of Alexandria. These destinations offer a fuller picture of Egypt’s diverse historical and cultural landscape.

Health Precautions and Travel Insurance

Ensure you have the necessary vaccinations for travel to Egypt and consider bringing medications for common ailments like upset stomachs. Moreover, investing in comprehensive travel insurance is crucial. It should cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and loss of belongings.

Creating a Sustainable and Respectful Journey

Creating a Sustainable and Respectful Journey

As you explore the Nile, be conscious of your environmental and cultural impact. Avoid single-use plastics, respect wildlife, and be considerate of the local communities you visit. Responsible tourism ensures the preservation of this magnificent river for future generations.

Making the Most of Onboard Activities

While the focus of a Nile cruise is on the historical and cultural sites, don’t overlook the onboard activities. Many cruises offer cultural talks, cooking demonstrations, and even Arabic language lessons.

Engaging in these activities can deepen your understanding of Egyptian culture and add another layer of enjoyment to your trip.

Photography Tips and Etiquette

The Nile and its surroundings offer a photographer’s paradise. For the best shots, consider the time of day; early morning and late afternoon light can beautifully capture the landscapes and monuments.

Always ask for permission before photographing people and be mindful of areas where photography might be restricted, especially in sacred or military sites.

Dining Experiences and Local Cuisine

Dining Experiences and Local Cuisine

Dining on a Nile cruise introduces you to the flavors of Egypt. Expect a mix of international and Egyptian dishes. Don’t miss trying local specialties like koshari (a rice, pasta, and lentil dish), falafel, and molokhia (a traditional green soup).

If you have dietary restrictions, inform the cruise company in advance to accommodate your needs.

Understanding Tipping and Local Economy

Tipping (baksheesh) is a common practice in Egypt and is expected for services rendered. This includes guides, drivers, and staff on the cruise.

It’s helpful to have small denominations of Egyptian pounds for tipping . Also, consider buying souvenirs and products from local artisans to support the local economy.

Staying Healthy and Active

While on the cruise, it’s important to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun. Many cruises offer opportunities for physical activity, such as swimming or simple onboard fitness facilities. Take advantage of these to stay active.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Evenings on the Nile can be magical. Some cruises offer traditional entertainment like belly dancing shows and whirling dervishes. It’s also a perfect time to simply relax on the deck, watching the stars and enjoying the gentle sounds of the river.

Learning the Historical Significance of the Nile

Learning the Historical Significance of the Nile

A Nile cruise isn’t just a vacation; it’s a journey through history. From ancient Egyptian civilization to its role in the modern era, the Nile has countless stories to tell. Engaging with this history, through guided tours and personal exploration, adds depth to your experience.

In conclusion, a Nile cruise offers a unique and enriching experience. With the right preparation, respect for local customs, and an adventurous spirit, you are set to embark on a journey that transcends mere tourism, offering a profound connection to the past and present of this extraordinary region.

Home / Egypt Tourism / Egypt Nile Cruises / Best Time To Visit Nile

Being a desert area, the country of Egypt tends to be very much heated during the summer times while the temperatures fall very much down during the winters. This creates confusion among the tourists about the Best Time To Visit Nile on this stunning country of Egypt.

So, let us show you the finer points of Egyptian Nile Cruise and classification to dig deep the temptation it still is. Egypt Tours has a lot to offer tourists and wanderers. Not only its history but its Tourism In Egypt is the best attributes to watch out for.

Summers In Nile Riviera

The heat waves between May and October can easily cross 50 degrees Centigrade during the afternoon. And while most of the better places are by the desert side, it can be hectic and problematic for the tourists.

Springtime In Nile Riviera

The springtime from mid-March to mid-April can also be avoided as footfalls tend to be at its very maximum. Another season to avoid is the Easter time during which foreign tourists would like to stay for a week or two more that just adds up to the crowd.

Best Time To Visit Nile

On visitors’ comments and personal experiences, the best time to visit Nile would be from October to May. This period is favoured mostly because of the smooth weather that is not too hot as the summer heats. The days are still sunny making it a lot better for people to deal with, and visiting the historic sites is a lot more pleasurable than during the summer months.

Festivals In Nile Riviera

  • The period corresponds to the Christmas and New Year time which makes warmer clothes a must during this time of the year.
  • Another fantastic time to visit the Nile would be during the Islamic month of Ramadhan. Many foreign tourists are sceptical about visiting the country during this time because of reasons unknown, but personal experiences say that it would be the best time. Native are way more courteous and warming and the bazaars and streets become even more decorated and colourful.
  • After a day of fasting, as soon as the sun appears, Muslims break their fast with a meal that is known as “iftar”, and if you are ever invited to one of these, grasp the opportunity with both hands: it is something not to be missed. Food is plentiful, especially sweet foods, and the whole experience is something you will never forget.
  • The month of Ramadan shifts backwards by two weeks every year so checking up the dates is a must if one is to visit during this holy month.

Nile is beautiful all throughout the year. But for one to have a wonderful tour, the periods corresponding to Christmas and Ramadan are the best options. Overall, the time between October and May is the other preferable period.

  • Temperatures: In general, January is considered to be the coolest month on the Nile, with average highs in the mid-70s Fahrenheit (around 25 degrees Celsius) and lows in the mid-50s Fahrenheit (about 10 degrees Celsius). However, it can be significantly colder at night, especially in the desert regions.

  • Shoes: Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as you’ll be doing a lot of exploring. You may also want to pack a pair of sandals for the evenings.
  • Hat: A hat is a must-have to protect you from the sun.
  • Sunscreen: Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, even in the winter. The sun can be strong in Egypt, and you don’t want to get burned.

How to See the Nile River

By Laura Kiniry | October 5, 2023

A felucca sailing on the Nile near Aswan, Egypt

The Nile is Africa’s longest river, flowing north from the Sudanese desert upwards through Egypt . An essential lifeline for many, this legendary body of water not only is responsible for the rich agriculture of the surrounding Nile Valley, it also has been a vital source of transport since ancient times. A Nile River cruise is the quintessential way to experience this aptly nicknamed “father of African rivers,” and Egypt itself.

But what is the best way to cruise the Nile River in Egypt? There are so many ways to take to its waters that it’s difficult knowing where to begin. Options range from evening party boats on which neon lights and dancing are the norm, to slow-going meanders aboard traditional wooden sailboats that call to mind days of yore. Each type of Nile cruise offers its own unique perks, so it ultimately boils down to personal preference and time. Whatever type of excursion you choose, rest assured that they all have one thing in common: the opportunity to fully experience the River Nile and soak in its beauty, as well as the many breathtaking archaeological sites , traditional Nubian villages, and vibrant cities that line its fertile banks.

To help identify the best Nile River cruise for you, here are three distinct ways to experience it, and a comparison of the perks and flexibilities of each Nile tour:

Dahabeya Nile Cruises

Imagine sailing along the Nile waters in the same way that travelers have for millennia. Classic two-masted sailing boats known as dahabeyas have been navigating this ancient river in some form since Pharaonic times. Originally intended as transport for royal families and other aristocrats, these simple yet elegant flat-bottom vessels are a favorite along the Nile, where they’ve become the consummate form of “slow travel.” Today dahabeyas provide a rare opportunity to traverse this iconic river in a way that’s both authentic and elegant.

With only a handful of cabins and a couple of suites onboard, dahabeyas are much more intimate than a traditional cruise ship, making them ideal for private charter. A communal sundeck for lounging is typical, and while there’s a selection of food onboard, these multi-day excursions ( dahabeyas typically run 5-day to 7-day Nile cruise packages between Luxor and Aswan or vice-versa) offer a wonderful chance to sample the local cuisine or any of Egypt’s plethora of top-notch restaurants while ashore.

Often adorned with handmade furnishings, though without modern conveniences such as high-powered A/C or lightning-fast WiFi, these small and stylish boats are ideal for anyone who treasures a more relaxed pace, genuine travel experience, and a step back in time.

Luxury Nile Cruisers

If it’s contemporary amenities like an onboard spa and high-speed WiFi that you’re after, consider a luxury cruise for your trip down the Nile. These ultra-luxe, motor-driven vessels feature all the creature comforts, including exceptional food and wine offerings, air-conditioned lounges (especially welcome during Egypt’s often sweltering summer months), and—in the case of the Oberoi Philae— even an outdoor pool. Stylish and sophisticated, they tend to be smaller and more refined than larger party cruises. For a five-star hotel on water, a luxury Nile river cruise is unbeatable.

Overland with a Felucca Cruise on the Nile

Perhaps you’d rather skip a cruise all together, but still want the essential Nile experience. Consider dinner aboard a felucca, a traditional wooden sailboat that has all the mystique of a dahabeya but is both smaller and geared toward an afternoon or evening experience.

Feluccas offer the best of both worlds—the ability to still savor the river from its magical waters while doing the bulk of your travel on land. They’re also perfect for anyone with a more defined travel schedule and/or a limited amount of time.

For the most pristine Nile waters, a felucca in or around Aswan is the way to go, though seeing the lights of Cairo as they reflect onto the river can be just as breathtaking.

Whatever you decide, watching the Nile sunset as it shifts in colors from orange to gold to red is truly one of life’s great experiences.

The Nile from Shore

If it’s a pure road trip you’re after, GeoEx can still arrange those spectacular twilight views—only from shore. For example, the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan is one of Egypt’s most fabled colonial-era properties, and its picturesque terrace provides exquisite panoramic views—excellent for watching the feluccas float past while you sip a sweet hibiscus tea or cocktail. Skip the Nile cruise and stay on land to get a different perspective.

What is the Best Time of Year to do a Nile Cruise?

One of the main considerations in choosing when to cruise down the Nile, is the temperature. Summer heat can make exploring the antiquities during shore excursions more of a trial than a treat. From the middle of October through February, winter weather means sunny skies and warm days with cool evenings. This is also the most popular time to travel, so plan your Nile cruise holidays well ahead of your travel dates.

Spring and fall usually see fewer travelers with warmer daytime temperatures, which can be appealing to those who don’t mind the heat. A trip in March, April, or early October should still have reasonable weather for a five star Nile cruise or a simple felucca trip along the river.

Cruising the River Nile: Pros, Cons, and Recommendations

nile cruise weather

Angus McComiskey/Getty Images

Traditionally, a Nile cruise was considered the centerpiece of an Egyptian vacation, evoking romantic images of idyllic days spent drifting in luxury between the country's ancient sights . In Victorian times, a Nile cruise was the only way to see some of Egypt 's most outstanding ancient temples. Modern visitors have more options available to them; and while Nile cruises are still popular, some find themselves put off by the idea of being confined on a boat for the majority of their vacation. The river is much busier now than it was in the past, and with more than 200 cruise boats plying their trade, there are lines to get through the locks and to dock at each disembarkation point.

Let's weigh the pros and cons of a Nile cruise so that you can decide whether or not it's a good fit for your visit to Egypt.

What to Expect

Most Nile cruises start in Luxor and visit the popular sites of Esna, Edfu, and Kom Ombo before disembarking in Aswan. Other itineraries fly directly to Aswan and work their way north down the Nile to the same sights. Most cruises will last at least four nights. There are many different vessels to choose from, ranging from traditional paddle steamers (best suited to those that favor history and authenticity) to luxurious modern cruise ships (geared towards those for whom creature comforts are a priority). Your budget and personal preferences will determine which cruise you choose, although opting for a cabin with air-conditioning is advised during the scorching summer months .

Most cruise companies employ the services of an Egyptologist, who will guide your group around the ancient sights you visit along the way. Days start early to avoid the intense heat of the afternoon; and as such, all cruises tend to operate on a similar schedule (which can lead to overcrowding at the docking sites and at the temples themselves). Modern vessels typically have a swimming pool so that you can cool off after your morning explorations; while some provide nightly entertainment in the form of belly dancing shows or themed dress-up evenings. Food on board is usually excellent, ranging from generous buffets to set dinner menus. Make sure to find out what's included before choosing your operator.

Despite the changes brought about by the progression of time, a Nile river cruise is still one of the most popular ways to see Egypt's ancient sights. Part of that is tradition, and part of it is practicality; after all, many of the most famous sites are located directly on the river, making a cruise the easiest way to travel between them. At night, many of the temples and monuments are illuminated, and the sight of them from the water is simply breathtaking. During the day, the rural scenes you'll see whilst traveling from place to place have remained largely unchanged for thousands of years.

Despite the early morning starts (and depending on which vessel you choose), cruises can also be wonderfully relaxing. While sailing, you'll be able to get a sense of the country without having to deal firsthand with the chaotic roads, busy city streets, and persistent hawkers for which Egypt is famous. Although the sites you'll visit along the way are inevitably crowded, arriving in a large group can make some travelers feel more comfortable. You'll also benefit from the knowledge of an expert guide, both in terms of navigating the touts and in terms of understanding the fascinating history of the temples themselves.

For many visitors, the main drawback of a Nile cruise is not the influx of vessels, nor the crowding at the sites (the latter is unavoidable whether you visit them as part of a cruise or not). The main disadvantage is the inflexibility of a cruise; the fact that you have to operate on a set schedule that dictates when you visit a temple, how long you get to spend there, and what you see whilst you're there. If you want to spend more than a few hours exploring the untold wonders of the temple complexes at Luxor, for example, you may wish to travel there independently or with a land-based guide.

These days, overland tours are equally easy to arrange and allow for more flexibility. You can even hire a car or take public transport if you don't want to be part of an organized tour at all. Many cruise itineraries focus solely on the most popular temples, leaving out worthwhile smaller sights like Abydos and Dendera. Alternatively if your time in Egypt is limited, you may prefer to focus on one or two sights rather than spending much of your vacation in transit on the river. The sheer amount of time spent on board can also be a drawback if you're traveling with young children, or if you find out too late that you don't enjoy the company of your fellow cruise mates.

Recommended Cruises

Best Traditional

Audley Travel's five-night itineraries aboard the Steam Ship Sudan offer the last word in exclusivity and Victorian-era refinement. The steamship, which was constructed in 1885 for King Fouad, was the direct inspiration for Agatha Christie's famous novel Death on the Nile and is still decorated in flawless Belle Epoque style. In each of its 18 cabins and five suites, period antiques range from brass beds to vintage telephones. And although the ship is now operated by a hybrid diesel/steam engine for optimum quietness, you can still view the original pistons and paddle wheels. Dining aboard the Steam Ship Sudan includes generous buffet breakfasts and lunches and stately four-course dinners.

Best Luxury

Despite its traditional exterior, the  Oberoi Philae  offers 22 cabins and suites decorated in the same style you might expect from a contemporary 5-star hotel. Each one includes a pillow-top mattress, high-speed WiFi, a multi-pressure shower, and 24-hour butler service. If you're feeling particularly decadent, splurge on a suite with its own private terrace, complete with a sun lounger and heated whirlpool tub. There are two restaurants to choose from, one for gourmet international cuisine, the other for light meals and beverages at the edge of the ship's temperature-controlled outdoor swimming pool. Other luxuries range from a movie theater and dance floor to a salon and spa treatment rooms.

Best Budget

Budget travelers should consider booking a felucca cruise like the ones offered by On The Go Tours . Feluccas are traditional Egyptian sailboats, the like of which have plied their trade on the Nile for centuries. They are wind-powered and as such have a more fluid itinerary; while their smaller size allows them to dock at places of interest that don't have the infrastructure for larger cruise ships. There is no luxury on a felucca cruise; you will sleep on deck in a sleeping bag that you bring with you; the food is basic and amenities are limited to a toilet and shower on the accompanying support boat. However, the experience is probably one of the most authentic (and certainly the cheapest) on the river.

Best for Families

Being trapped on a boat for an extended period of time can be challenging for families, especially if they include young children. This 10-day itinerary from Abercrombie & Kent gives you the best of both worlds with some land-based adventures in addition to a four-night Nile cruise. Your journey from Luxor to Aswan aboard Sanctuary Sun Boat IV is accompanied by an A&K Child Activity Coordinator whose job it is to keep your little ones entertained en route. The itinerary also includes plenty of interactive, hands-on fun that doubles as cultural education, from felucca sailing trips to camel rides, henna painting, and bread baking. A themed dinner and onboard costume party lets the kids dress up in traditional robes known as galabeyas .

The Last Word

Ultimately, whether or not a Nile cruise is the right choice for you depends on your personal preferences. If you like the idea of a cruise , the sheer variety of available options means that you're likely to find a vessel and/or operator to suit your needs. If the drawbacks listed above sound like deal-breakers for you, you're better off saving your money and organizing an alternative option instead.

Weather During Nile Cruise Trip

What would be the weather look like during my nile cruise trip.

The Sun: In all seasons the sun is extremely strong. In the less oppressive months, especially when there is a breeze, it may not be apparent how strong the sun really is. A high factor sun block is recommended all year round. The Rain: Some say that it never rains. But in fact it rains even if it is just once or twice per year. The rain is fairly brief and it dries out again very quickly. The rainfall can be heavy but it is usually not enough to measure. The Temperature: There is some variation in temperature through the year. July and August are the hottest. Winter months, December to February, are the least oppressive and can even get chilly at night. March and November would suit most people best.

An Ultimate Nile Cruise Guide (And 8 Essential Tips!)

A Nile cruise is the best way to see Ancient Egypt’s most iconic temples. Here’s your ultimate local’s Nile cruise guide to plan your perfect trip.

A Nile cruise boat is the best (and easiest) way to see legendary Luxor, Aswan and all the magnificent Ancient Egyptian temples in between.

No itinerary to Egypt is complete without stops at these major sites – and a cruise boat is the most comfortable way to see everything Egypt has to offer.

But it’s easy to get overwhelmed when you’re planning your bucket list Nile adventure.

There’s around 250 different cruise boats travelling between Luxor and Aswan. How do you pick the right one? And how can you avoid the pitfalls and scams you often hear about online?

felucca egypt

I’m an expat living in Cairo for the past decade and counting. I’ve taken a Nile cruise four different times – and they are definitely not all created equal.

So here’s my ultimate guide to taking a Nile Cruise – from how to plan your perfect itinerary, to essential tips and honest insights about what to expect.

I’ll also tell you what to avoid so you don’t make the same mistakes I did.

Table of Contents

Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan: what to expect

nile cruise guide

All the major Nile cruise boats travel between Luxor and Aswan, hitting all the major temples in between.

That means you start your cruise at either Luxor or Aswan where the boat docks for sightseeing. Then the boat departs and visits the temples along the way (before returning the same way with a new set of passengers).

3 nights Nile cruise itinerary

best things to do in egypt

Most basic 3-night cruise itineraries include a stop in Luxor where you’ll see Egypt’s most incredible temples like Karnak, Hatschepsut and Luxor Temple. You’ll also visit the breathtaking Valley of the Kings to see the famous tombs of kings like Tutankhamun and Ramses II. Luxor was once the ancient capital of Thebes so it’s the epicenter for all things Ancient Egyptian.

The standard itinerary also includes a stop in Aswan, home to the charming Graeco-Roman Philae Temple, the Unfinished Obelisk and Egypt’s colorful Nubian community. Aswan’s Nile is dotted with beautiful islands and its Nubian villages offer a glimpse into a vibrant culture.

During the cruise between Luxor and Aswan, ships usually stop at two different temples: Kom Ombo, dedicated to the ancient crocodile and falcon gods, and Edfu, dedicated to sky god Horus.

In Aswan, an optional excursion is usually offered to Abu Simbel (pictured above) – and I’d highly recommend it as it’s one of Egypt’s most stunning temples. In Luxor, optional hot-air ballooning is available with incredible views over the West Bank.

How many days do I need on a Nile cruise?

nile cruise guide

Longer cruise itineraries (between 4 to 7 nights) usually include more time in Luxor and Aswan and additional stops at temples like Esna.

If this sounds like a packed itinerary, it really is. But it’s absolutely worth it.

This 214-kilometer stretch of the Nile River is the heartland of Ancient Egypt and it’s an open-air museum of monuments and wonders.

You’ll get plenty of time to sit on the boat sundeck, sip a beer, take a swim and enjoy the scenes of rural Nile life sweeping past. But most days are filled with sightseeing with windows of downtime.

To avoid getting “templed out” and overwhelmed by all the history, study up on the temples before you leave. It doesn’t have to be a deep dive. But just watching a few YouTube videos about the temples does wonders to enrich your experience.

The best Nile cruise boats

nile cruise guide

The quality of the boats cruising the Nile varies wildly – so choose wisely!

How do you find your perfect, comfortable boat? Read reviews, do your research and get recommendations from seasoned travelers (like this one).

I booked my Nile cruise with Egypt Rest Tours and I was very happy with my cruise boat the Royal Beau Rivage.

It was clean and comfortable with a beautiful dining area and spacious rooms with Ancient Egyptian touches (all the photos in this story were taken aboard the Beau Rivage).

nile cruise guide

I also loved the food: it was fresh, varied and offered a good mix of international standards and local cuisine.

Boats on Nile cruises start from bargain, run-down ships with soggy buffets and rooms in desperate need of renovations – and these can work if you’re a backpacker on a budget.

Other ships are top of the line luxury offered by some of the world’s best-known cruise and hotelier brands like Oberoi and Viking. They feature wooden sun decks, stylish cabins, spas and gourmet cuisine.

But here’s the tricky part: 5 stars in Egypt doesn’t always mean high standards. It just means the boat was awarded 5 stars because it has all the amenities (swimming pool, bar, etc) required for a top rating. It can still be a 5-star boat with run-down facilities – so do your research.

The dahabiya: a slower way to travel

dahabiya

If you’re looking for a slower-paced and more immersive experience  than a standard cruise boat, consider a wind-powered Dahabiya.

Dahabiyas are smaller, carrying around 10-20 passengers, slower and more historic. They are the vessels used by 19th-century travelers that originally popularized the concept of a Nile cruise. And they were famously romanticized in Agatha Christie’s novel Death on the Nile .

Dahabiyas can dock in smaller villages that larger cruises can’t reach. And this means authentic experiences like Nubian musicians around a bonfire and tea with mint at a local cafe.

Dahabiyas are a pricier option and the offer longer itineraries, more personalized service and flexible itineraries. But they’re also smaller so they don’t include facilities like a swimming pool or spacious dining room.

Is a Nile cruise worth it?

nile cruise egypt

A Nile cruise is absolutely worth it. Even a 3 or 4-day cruise offers a comfortable way to visit Luxor, Aswan and all the temples in between with glimpses of the gorgeous scenery and rural life along the Nile.

A cruise lets you avoid the logistics of inter-city travel. You don’t have to book tour guides, buses, planes and taxis because everything is taken care of.

I once took a trip across this part of Egypt by plane, bus and train, and it was a lot more exhausting. Not to mention the constant packing and unpacking as you move from one city to another.

A Nile cruise lets you skip all that hassle. You get on board and sleep in the same room all through your journey, with all your meals and sightseeing included.

nile cruise guide

It might feel a bit formulaic as you’re following an itinerary with a half dozen other tour groups (most cruisers carry around 50-100 passengers). But a Nile cruise also lets you relax and focus on the sightseeing.

For me, the scenery along the way is a huge bonus. I love to sit on the sun deck or at the open window in my room to watch the greenery along the Nile and the scenes of rural Egyptian life – the fishermen, the kids swimming in the river and the azans from village minarets.

You can’t get that experience going from one temple to another on a speeding bus.

Life on board: what to expect

nile cruise guide

A Nile cruise boat is a kind of floating hotel. Most boats include a sundeck with a swimming pool and bar area, and a dining room downstairs where all the meals are served.

My boat also had a small spa upstairs and a gift shop with gold jewelry, t-shirts and other souvenirs.

The day starts with a breakfast buffet. My boat had a big selection of pastries, cereals, an omelette station, breakfast sausages, beans and more.

The day’s itinerary is posted on a TV screen or bulletin board in the reception area. It usually includes a stop at a temple for sightseeing, and times of breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Coffee and juice is included at breakfast, and any beverages during lunch and dinner (from bottled water and juice to wine and beer) are billed to your room.

nile cruise guide

On most nights, cruises offer evening entertainment which ranges from belly dance and galabeya parties (where you dress up in Egypt’s traditional dress) to more sophisticated offerings like Egyptology lectures and cooking classes.

Rooms are comfortable and range widely depending on price. The most luxurious boats will have private balconies or wide windows in your room that make the most of the Nile views.

All cabins are equipped with air conditioning and a TV set, closet and bathroom with toilet and shower.

Rooms on the lower decks have smaller windows and are usually cheaper.

But avoid the cabins that are closest to the engines – they get very loud. They’re usually given to staff, but it’s always good to check because I’ve seen some real YouTube horror stories.

Nile cruise guide: tips and recommendations

nile cruise guide

Here are some things to keep in mind based on my experience taking different Nile cruises.

Follow these tips for smooth sailing on your trip:

1. Pack some flip flops (and slippers in winter)

Not all boats provide slippers in the room so bring your own to lounge around comfortably. And don’t forget a pair of flip flops for the pool and sundeck.

2. Forget any dress codes

Lots of blogs will tell you to dress conservatively in Egypt. And while that may apply for sightseeing the mosques around Cairo, it doesn’t really matter when you’re on a Nile cruise. You’ll be going from temple to boat to temple, moving in a bubble with other travelers, so t-shirts and shorts for women when it’s hot are perfectly fine.

3. Get a local SIM card

Not all boats have free WiFi. Get a local SIM card to avoid the overpriced and measly data sold on board many ships.

4. Stock up on water and snacks

If your cabin doesn’t have a minibar, pick up your drinks and snacks while you’re out and bring them back to the boat.

5. Don’t haggle too much over souvenirs.

best cruises nile

An unpopular opinion, but prices in Egypt are fairly low and it’s not worth the haggling to save the equivalent of a dollar or two. Many people in this part of Egypt rely on tourism for their livelihoods and they’re still bouncing back after the difficult pandemic years.

6. Wear comfortable shoes and pants

You’ll be getting in and out of boats on a sometimes slippery dock, especially in Aswan. Flimsy sandals and flowing skirts are a real nightmare.

7. Don’t worry about pushy salesmen.

They are persistent, but nowhere near as bad as click-bait YouTubers will have you believe. A simple and respectful “no thank you” (or two) usually does the job.

8. Pack some layers.

Even if the days are mild, nights get quite cold so bring a light jacket for the evenings.

What is the best month to cruise the Nile?

nile cruise egypt

The best time to cruise the Nile is between October and April, when temperatures are mild and the weather is cool. You’ll be refreshed enough to get the most out of all that sightseeing.

Visit in the summer and the hot sun and balmy humidity will sap your strength. And you’ll spend all your time at the temples guzzling your water and looking for some shade.

kom ombo nile cruise

A Nile cruise is the easiest and most magical way to see all of Ancient Egypt’s most legendary temples from Luxor to Aswan – and to take in all the lush scenery along the way.

Though it’s easy to get overwhelmed when planning this bucket list adventure. Use this guide to plan your itinerary and avoid the pitfalls and scams you often hear about online. And book a reliable tour guide – I went on this cruise with Egypt Rest Tours and highly recommend them.

I would love to hear from you. Is a Nile cruise on your Egypt itinerary?

Weather in Egypt

Understanding Egypt’s geographical position is essential to understanding its various climate. In northern Africa, Egypt is affected by its closeness to the Mediterranean Sea and its large desert interior. These two critical climatic areas shape local and tourist weather in Egypt. Near the Mediterranean shore, temperatures are gentler, and humidity is more significant. Yet, the desert interior has minimal rainfall and significant day-to-night temperature changes. Due to its arid climate, Egypt has year-round sunlight. The sun shines year-round, making the country a popular vacation spot.

The Mediterranean shore has a more moderate climate than the desert, with pleasant summers and mild winters. The country’s aridity is relieved by coastal precipitation, especially in winter. Egypt’s desert climate dominates. Little annual rainfall makes these areas dry. Day and night temperatures can fluctuate by over 20 degrees Celsius (36 degrees Fahrenheit). The air’s lack of moisture prevents heat from retaining after sunset, causing this drastic temperature change.

Egypt’s Mediterranean shore and desert interior may seem like two distinct worlds, yet they both add to its beauty. Coastal places are great for folks who like milder temperatures and increased humidity. The desert’s enormous dunes, oases, and beautiful night stars delight stargazing. Egypt’s different climates complicate your vacation experience, whether visiting ancient monuments, boating down the River, or lounging on the Red Sea. Thus, while you plan your trip, remember to pack appropriately and enjoy the year-round weather in Egypt.

But don’t miss the desert’s twist: nights cool down to 39°F (4°C) in winter and 79°F (26°C) in summer. Unlike Cairo, Luxor gets even less rain – a dry haven for sun-seekers.

Ready for coastal breezes? Sharm El Sheikh’s got your back. With winter days at 59°F (15°C) and summer warmth at 91°F (33°C), you’re in for a treat. Nights stay pleasant, ranging from 52°F (11°C) in winter to 77°F (25°C) in summer. This paradise by the Red Sea sees a bit more rain, around 0.5 inches yearly.

Desert days mean significant temperature shifts! In Cairo and Luxor, brace for 20-30°F (11-17°C) differences between scorching days and cool desert nights. Blame it on the desert lacking moisture to hold heat.

Now, Egypt’s desert climate means minimal rainfall. It shapes the land and life. Rainfall’s a rare guest, but it leaves a mark. Ecosystems adapt – think hardy plants and critters. But when rain shows up uninvited, flash floods might crash the party. Desert soil struggles to gulp down sudden water, leading to unexpected floods. Though these floods aren’t frequent, keep an eye out and be prepared!

Insider Tips for Stress-Free Travel

Weather in Egypt

Traveling to a new destination is an exciting adventure, but it’s essential to be well-prepared for the varying weather conditions in Egypt you might encounter. Whether you’re jetting off to the sunny deserts of Egypt or exploring its vibrant cities, proper clothing and safety measures will ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. Here are some insider tips to help you get ready for your Egyptian escapade.

Dressing Smartly for Every Climate

Egypt’s weather can be diverse, ranging from scorching hot summers to chilly winters. When it comes to clothing, it’s all about versatility. For the summer months, opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton and linen to stay calm. Loose-fitting shirts, dresses, shorts, and wide-brimmed hats will be your go-to pieces.

On the other hand, layering is your best friend if you’re visiting during the colder months. Pack a mix of sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, and a light jacket to adapt to temperature fluctuations throughout the day. Remember a scarf and gloves for those cooler evenings.

Safety First: Navigating Extreme Weather

While the weather in Egypt can be beautiful, staying informed about the potential for extreme weather in Egypt conditions is crucial. Sandstorms are common in desert regions, so keeping a scarf or mask handy to cover your nose and mouth can protect you from inhaling dust. Also, sunglasses and a hat can shield your eyes and face from sand blowing.

Tailoring Your Travel Destinations to Weather in Egypt Preferences

A shot of Cairo from the top at sunset

Egypt offers a diverse range of destinations, each with its unique climate. If you’re a sunseeker, the Red Sea resorts like Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada offer year-round warmth and clear waters for swimming and snorkeling. If cooler temperatures are more your style, consider exploring the historical treasures of Cairo and Luxor during the milder months.

Staying Safe During Extreme Weather

Safety is paramount, especially during extreme weather events. Always watch the weather in Egypt forecasts and heed local advice. If a sandstorm is expected, stay indoors or find shelter. During heavy rains, be cautious of flash floods, and avoid low-lying areas.

Packing Essentials for Your Egyptian Adventure

  • Pack Smart : Prepare for a mix of weather in Egypt conditions by including versatile clothing options in your luggage. Prioritize lightweight clothing for the hot months and layers for the colder periods.
  • Stay Hydrated : Egypt’s dry climate can lead to dehydration. Carry a reusable water bottle and drink regularly, especially if you’re spending time outdoors.
  • Sun Protection : The Egyptian sun is intense, so pack a high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection, and a wide-brimmed hat. Cover exposed skin to prevent sunburn.

10 Day Egypt Experience Tour (Domestic flight) Tour

  • River Cruise

10 Day Egypt Experience Tour (Domestic flight)

Our 10-day tour was great. We essentially traversed the length of the country with day trips to Abu Simbel and Alexandria. From the moment we landed in Cairo on Day 1, we were greeted (within the security area) by Michael who ensured our airport transits were smooth. Our Cairo Egyptologist, Tamer, and our Luxor-Aswan Egyptologist, Islam, were amazing. A good tour guide really makes a difference to how we see and experience the sights. Would definitely recommend. We felt Egypt to be safe no matter what was happening in neighbouring countries.

Nile Jewel - 5* Cruise Tour

Nile Jewel - 5* Cruise

We just finished 9 days on the Nile Jewel tour. The whole tour is well organised. We were met by a tour operator at the airport. Our tour guide for the trip Ramez was full of great knowledge and he was fun and friendly. Our group was small with just 10 people. We felt safe the whole time with Ramez and he kept us up to date with the itinerary. We packed alot in and there were a lot of early starts. The hotels were 3 star and they were clean & comfortable. The best accommodation we had was on the Nile Cruise ship. The food is buffet style in the hotels and on the boat, it is quite similar. There are also stops at different stores as well. We had a great trip and a good experience of Egypt.

Egypt Nile Jewel Tour

Egypt Nile Jewel

The itinerary for the trip was jam-packed and we like it that way! We thought it was very good value for money. All the sites that were included were amazing and we loved all the additional add-ons. Our tour guide George was wonderful in providing everything we could have possibly ever needed. He was knowledgeable kind friendly and we felt safe the whole time. Although we disliked waking up at 4:00 in the morning to leave sometimes we appreciated the overall organization of the tour. It meant that we got to see the sites when it wasn't too busy. We loved the sense of adventure trying new food meeting the locals and exploring the culture of Egypt. We would definitely recommend this tour to other people looking for an adventure in Egypt!

Egypt Adventure Tour

Egypt Adventure

There were a lot of extra costs that think would be better included. Too much time spent travelling but that was what I signed up for so not criticising you guys but would not recommend to a friend for that reason. Hotel in Cairo very average in terms of rooms but service helpful. Camel ride was a bit of a joke given it’s brevity. I found the food generally disappointing in Egypt as too westernised, the best meals as far as I am concerned were definitely the ones with families and on the felucca

4 Days 3 nights 5 stars Nile Cruise Aswan to Luxor Tour

4 Days 3 nights 5 stars Nile Cruise Aswan to Luxor

Sehr gut organisiert. Klare Weiterempfehlung.

Holiday In Egypt 4 Days – 3 Nights Nile Cruise From Cairo by Flight

The Nile cruise was a highlight of our program in Egypt. There’s no way we would’ve been able to see all the temples and tombs without the cruise making it so easy. Everything was well organized and the team was always available via WhatsApp. We had a great group with our guide Wael. He looked after us very well during the entire trip.

Best Of Egypt - 5* Cruise

The overall experience was amazing! Apart from learning a lot from Egyptian history, I also managed to learn about Egyptian culture thanks to the excellent tour guide we had, Nabil Shohdy, who was also one of the highlights of the entire tour. He always answered any questions I might have, and he was willing to help and provide recommendations on practical stuff (ATMs, drinking water, mobile data, etc.). 100% recommended! I look forward to traveling back again!
