Candlebox: “it’s been heartbreaking and it’s been exciting, and it’s been damaging. ultimately, it has been everything that i’ve wanted it to be and more…”.

Preparing to say their last goodbye, Candlebox frontman Kevin Martin looks back on their career and the legacy he wants to leave behind.

' src=

Back in 2021, I spoke to Candlebox frontman Kevin Martin about the future of the band. During that conversation, Kevin admitted that it would be couple of years before he would be thinking about bringing this chapter to close.

Fast-forward to March 2023 and the band did indeed reveal details of a new album and farewell tour . In our latest Cover Story , and as we head into the closing couple of months of 2023, we got on the phone to Kevin to chat about the decision, his thoughts on their career, and, ultimately, how he would like Candlebox to be remembered.

Recently there have been some things that you hinted at which lead into this conversation so it’s nice to catch up again. One of the first things you said to me was, when we talked about lockdown, you said you weren’t prepared for that fourth break. Moving forward why is it now the right time to bring this chapter of the story to a close?

“Mainly just because it’s been 30 years since the debut album so I was discussing with my wife over the past couple years about how to put this whole thing away. She was pretty adamant about, you know, telling me, why don’t you wait until you reach the 30 years? I was ready to do it last year, but it’s the stresses and things that come with touring, as you know, even though Candlebox has a history, 30 years, and we’ve sold however many millions of records, there’s still a constant battle of trying to keep the name and the brand afloat, and all the stuff that goes along with it, not to mention the expenses.

It just seemed like the obvious time but, you know, if The Long Goodbye record happens to take off and becomes a hit, then I’ll have to tour on it next year. I’ve discussed that with my wife and the guys in the band as well. That being said it was the realisation that I’m only human, and that I really enjoy being at home which was really just the catalyst for all of it.”

That was one of the things you said that being home for 20 months made you realise about things that you really enjoy doing. I’m assuming that, given your previous answer, this wasn’t a snap decision, and there’s a lot of thought gone into it?

“Yeah, I don’t know what I’m gonna do next year.”

You said that, as a kid, you only ever wanted to be a rock star. Now you’ve achieved that was everything you wanted it to be?

“It’s been more. It’s been, you know, all the good, all the bad. It’s been, to quote Dewey Cox , it’s been a beautiful ride. It’s been heartbreaking and it’s been exciting, and it’s been beautiful, and it’s been damaging. It’s all the things that come along with being a human being. I’ve had those moments of great clarity on the road and I’ve had moments of incredibly clouded vision as to who I am and what I want to do and where I want to be and where my career has led me. Ultimately, it has been everything that I’ve wanted it to be and more and for that I’m truly grateful.

I’m so lucky, man. I pinch myself every single day because, as angry as I am at the hotel that I’m in right now, which is not the hotel I wanted to be in, it’s just stupid stuff. but you know, you get spoiled out here. Being a Rockstar, there’s certain elements of that, that rear their ugly head every now and then and you can become a real diva but, you know, that’s life.”

“It’s all the things that come along with being a human being. I’ve had those moments of great clarity on the road and I’ve had moments of incredibly clouded vision as to who I am and what I want to do…”

Over those 30 years the music industry has changed dramatically. It was a brutal industry back then and it feels worse now? What advice would you give that 19/20 year-old kid who is dreaming of being that Rockstar that you became?

“Be patient. Play live as often as you can. Get out of your own town. Go to other towns and play. Book your own tours. Don’t try and get a booking agent. Don’t try and get a manager. Do it yourself. It’s very easy to do yourself. I mean, right now, not to jump into it, because with AI and the possibilities there for you, you can reach an audience.

With artificial intelligence, why would you sign to a major? I’m working with the band Mona out of Ohio. Nick Brown, the singer, he’s incredibly talented. He toured with Noel Gallagher . He’s played Glastonbury . He’s huge in Europe but he’s not so big here. That’s one of the things I’m doing next year is managing his career but you know, with all of those types of things, it’s easy come easy go.

He’s doing it on his own path and the direction that he wants and I support that and tell him the same thing. Just get out there and play shows. Let’s not wait for an agent. As a manager, I’m the best manager ever because I’m only charging 1% because it doesn’t matter to me. It’s not like I need the money. I just love this kid and I love his talent and I want to see it through for him. I know how to manipulate the system. That’s what I’d say to him is just do this on your own but get out there and play live as often as you can with as many bands as you can and experience different crowds, people that don’t know you, don’t know your music. You have to win them over. That’s the only way you’re going to get a career.”

V13 – Magazine Cover – Issue38 – Candlebox

Totally agree with that. It’s been a great career but you’ve also talked about the challenges. What do you put your longevity down to and what has kept you going?

“Probably just the love of the music. Candlebox has been so fortunate to be able to continually change on every record we’ve made. We’ve grown with every album we’ve made. We’ve pushed ourselves. Not to extreme levels but we’ve pushed ourselves to the point where it’s allowed us to create another style of music for ourselves and to open ourselves up to a different audience. I don’t know how vast that audience is from that but it allowed us to continue to make those records.

I think that’s really what it is, that we never stuck to one style of music. We never tried to rewrite “Far Behind.” We never tried to rewrite “Cover Me.” We never tried to rewrite “You.” We’ve always played the music we played and I think, our live show is pretty, pretty spectacular. I don’t see a lot of bands that put on a performance like we do, certainly not at our age. I’m 54, my bass player is 56 and we run around like a bunch of kids.”

You grew up in the notorious Seattle scene that went through a lot of changes. A lot of those bands disappeared. A lot of your friends just jacked it all in but you kept going through that. What helped you get through that scene when it faded away?

“Gosh, I don’t know? I guess it was exploding and then, in 2000, when the music industry started to change, came the acceptance of Napster and all that sort of thing, people began realising that music was going to be traded virtually, so we had to adjust. Candlebox was going through the breakup of the band to get out of the contract with Maverick Records. I started writing music with other musicians and other artists which made it easy for me to continue to produce. I started producing young bands. I started writing with this kid named Jason Smith , out of Australia, who really took my song writing to another level.

I was just always expanding myself and, having the career I had, I was able to get a new record deal so there was an advance on that meaning I was able to financially stay afloat. But, the actual growth in the 2000s was difficult. We did Into The Sun record and I don’t know if we thought that that record was going to do anything. So, the fact that it sold 75,000 copies was surprising to us. Having that record do as well as it did it continued the path for Candlebox to still be around.”

In terms of the music industry, what have you learned from it? Working with new artists, you’re obviously carrying on in the industry but what’s the most important lesson you’ve taken away from your time so far?

“Well, don’t trust anybody. You’ve got to learn how to manipulate the manipulators. Like, I’m supposed to get my Master’s back in 2028, by contract under law on the contract that we signed with Warner Brothers attorneys. They’re coming to us right now saying, “Well, if you want the record back, you’re going to have to sue us for it.” Okay? Why is this? We wrote a contract with you, you signed it, we signed it, we’re supposed to get the Masters back. Why are you going to make us do this? Because they can, and that’s, you know, that’s the world.

So, you know, you can’t trust anybody in this industry. You’ve got to stick to your guns, you’ve got to listen, you’ve got to pay a lot of attention to what’s going on around you. You’ve got to be connected with a lot of other bands in this industry and you got to ask questions. Got to ask questions all the time.

I’ve said to him numerous times to make sure we’ve got the right business manager to handle these finances for you so that when we send you to Europe next year for six months, we can afford to have you be in Europe for six months. I mean, he got screwed on several contracts in the past. He was signed to Island Def Jam. The famous guy left Island and the minute that he left Nick’s career was over. The label was done with everything that he had signed.”

“You can’t trust anybody in this industry. You’ve got to stick to your guns, you’ve got to listen, you’ve got to pay a lot of attention to what’s going on around you…”

Knowing what you know now about the industry, is there anything you would have done differently?

“Yeah, I would have fired my first manager. I would have fired my band when they said they weren’t going to do the Bon Jovi / Van Halen tour in 1995. I mean, there’s so many things I would have done differently but, you know, all of that has led me to where I’m at now. I’m grateful for the life that I have. I would never have met my wife, Natalie, had the band done things differently. I don’t think I would. I don’t regret anything.”

Do you have regrets? And what are you most proud of?

“My son. Having a child. I mean, music is one thing in my career. I mean, I’ve toured with Metallica but my proudest moment is the way my wife and I have raised our son Jasper and made a beautiful 15 year old boy that’s got his whole life ahead of him. I’m grateful for that.”

Does he plan on following in your footsteps?

“Well, he has a drum set. But you know, I think both his mom and I have said to him, we would prefer you not to be a musician. Whether he follows Dad, we’ll see in a couple of years.”

Looking forward then. You’ve talked about, depending on how successful the record is, maybe carrying on tour it but, as of now, what do you think will go through your mind when you come offstage after that final show?

“What am I going to have to eat? It’s always pizza, you know? I’m done with it. So it’s gonna be where am I gonna go have dinner? I think what it’s going to be, there’s gonna be a heavy realisation of the gravity of the decision that I’ve made. You can’t be a touring musician for 30 years and not be somewhat emotionally attached to this lifestyle. I had a moment the other night when we’re in Louisville, Kentucky, and, it’s one of my favourite cities. We’ve played this room a million times, and the crowd was just so overwhelmingly loud. I just realised that I’m never going to play this little venue anymore. It’s an emotional thing.

I’m sure I’ll get home and, and probably start trying to keep myself busy with maybe some woodworking or something. The bug to do this is gone but I will still be producing bands. I’ve been asked to produce three records next year, I will still do charity events. If somebody asked me to do a charity event, I’ll do that but I won’t be touring and I won’t be making records for myself anymore.”

Do you think, looking back to what we said at the beginning about the 20 month break and you not been prepared for being home for so long, has prepared you for this?

In terms of the future, I believe there’s a documentary in the pipeline?

“Yeah, it’s coming out in the Fall. It’s done. Right now they’re chopping it. It’s being shopped to Netflix, Amazon, all that stuff.”

What was it like looking through all that old footage?

“It was hilarious. There’s so much about this band that people don’t know, besides where we got the band name from, you know? There’s so much history to Candlebox I think people are going to be very surprised as to our story. Certainly there’s gonna be people don’t give a shit but there’s a crowd of, you know, 7 million people that probably wondered where the hell we went.”

“I think what it’s going to be, there’s gonna be a heavy realisation of the gravity of the decision that I’ve made. You can’t be a touring musician for 30 years and not be somewhat emotionally attached to this lifestyle.”

Looking back over the last 30 years, we’ve talked about what advice you’d give somebody being that rock star you want it to be. Given the journey that you went on and the challenges you faced, as well as the good times, what advice would you give a band that is starting out on that journey?

“Same thing. Play as often as you can. Get a good business manager, someone you can trust. Don’t trust your manager. Don’t trust your agent. Don’t trust the label. Believe in yourselves. Be there for one another. You’re only as strong as your weakest link. I just had to talk to my nephew about this actually, which is funny because he’s having some trouble with a bass player. If you’re not on the same page, what are you doing? That bass player doesn’t want to be doing what you’re doing? There are million bass players.

We touched on this in the documentary, when we were asked to do the Van Halen tour with Bon Jovi in Europe, it was sold out, it was 12 weeks. The smallest venue was 70,000 people and my drummer and my guitar player went to my bass player and convinced him not to go. I should have fired him. I don’t know what you want to do. I’m going to Europe as Candlebox. I should have done that. And I didn’t do that.

That’s the interesting thing about Candlebox and that’s why I would say to a young band that, if you’re not on the same page, you’re not going to last. I am the only one still remaining from Candlebox because my vision was my vision and those guys didn’t have the same vision. You have to if you’re going to, in any way, shape or form, be a band that wants to conquer the world, you’ve got to be a band of brothers.”

You’ve talked about a vision, when you walk offstage what legacy do you want Candlebox to leave behind?

“A band that did it the way they wanted to do it, and didn’t listen to anybody. They just chose the path they chose and made the records they made and they had a fucking great time doing it. I think that the records speak for themselves and that the legacy will be that Candlebox released eight pretty brilliant albums and that, while they weren’t the most prolific musicians, what they did deliver was pretty spectacular.”

Candlebox Announce 45-Date 2021 U.S. Tour, Reuniting Classic Lineup at Two Shows

Alt-grunge rockers Candlebox will release  Wolves , their seventh album, in September and have just booked an exhaustive 45-date headlining U.S. tour, which will begin in early August and conclude with two shows featuring the band's original lineup.

The new record has been preceded by two singles — "My Weakness" and "Let Me Down Easy" — and will be the first from Candlebox since they released  Disappearing From Airports in 2016. "We didn't stray away from anything; if the song sounded Americana, we went there; if a song sounded progressive, we went progressive- we didn't try to stay in our lane, if you will," said singer Kevin Martin about the forthcoming release.

With a chance to get back out on the road in the wake of the pandemic which shuttered live music last year, Candlebox are not wasting the opportunity, criss-crossing the country, starting on Aug. 5 in Louisville, Kentucky. A week's worth of dates will do it for August before a continuous set of stops keeps Candlebox on tour from Sept. 3 through Oct. 24. After that, they will reunite their original lineup for a pair of Seattle gigs in early November.

See the complete list of tour dates below and look for tickets to go on sale at 10AM PT on Friday (June 25). Visit the Candlebox website for more info .

Candlebox Signs Off With Vibrant ‘The Long Goodbye’ (ALBUM REVIEW)

  • By Jeremy Lukens

After thirty years, Seattle alt-rock band Candlebox is saying farewell with one last album and tour. Frontman Kevin Martin is the only band member remaining from the original lineup that broke through with the multi-platinum eponymous debut in 1993. In the thirty years since, Martin has seen the band win over fans with singles that were mainstays on MTV and alternative radio. He’s also seen the band dismissed as pretenders riding the coattails of the Seattle grunge bands that came before them. Though that criticism was never fair, at that time, many held disdain for any bands with a “Seattle sound” that weren’t part of that local club scene in the mid-80s.

The band broke up in 2000 and returned six years later to a musical landscape where alt-rock was an afterthought. Accused of jumping on the hot trend initially, Candlebox has had the opposite problem since reforming: guitar-based alt-rock is as out of style as Doc Martens with shorts. Still, Martin and his alternating cast of bandmates pressed on. The music provides catharsis and artistic expression, and Candlebox doesn’t need a huge following to live that out.

During a concert in Orlando a few years ago, Martin acknowledged the half-capacity crowd. “I know it’s Spring Break. That must be why more kids aren’t here tonight. You know, all of those teenage Candlebox fans,” he joked.

Though Candlebox hasn’t had a gold record since 1995’s Lucy , it’s had modest hits with Happy Pills (1998), Into the Sun (2008), and Love Stories and Other Musings (2012). Like the crowd at that concert, the fan base may be smaller than it once was, but it’s enthusiastic.

The band’s eighth and final album, The Long Goodbye, is a fitting end for Candlebox in that it has enough high points to show what made the band hit-makers but also some moments that serve as reminders that the band was never able to replicate the artistic and commercial achievements of the debut album. For the final Candlebox album, Martin is joined by guitarists Island Styles and Brian Quinn—part of the lineup since 2016; Adam Kury on bass—a member since 2007, and drummer BJ Kerwin, who joined the band in 2021.

That short-lived stardom and the fickleness of fame are running themes throughout The Long Goodbye. In the album opener “Punks,” Martin bitterly rejects the quest for fame. “I don’t even want to taste it ‘cause every time it gets wasted. And what’s the point of trying to chase it when it’s already gone?” he sings over aggressive, distorted guitars. It’s the album’s best song, not just for its head-banging fury but also for its warning to today’s young, popular bands . “We paved these streets; that’s why you’re here,” he sings before offering the reminder that their popularity is “already gone.”

Candlebox is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington, US who like their regional influencers (Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, and Nirvana) are frequently associated with the grunge movement. They are particularly noted for taking this style from it’s indie punk origins and streamlining it into the pop circuit.

Their music has removed much of the harsh edges heard in the early forms of grunge; however, it is still grounded in rock music, even stretching in more obscure forms such as black metal (ex. Danzig and Black Sabbath) and freak funk ruffian rock (ex. Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane’s Addiction).

The group formed in 1990 initially under the name Uncle Duke; however, they changed it to Candlebox upon receiving inspiration from the Midnight Oil song “Tin Legs and Tin Mines”. The band’s original lineup consisted of vocalist/lead guitarist Kevin Martin, drummer Scott Mercado, guitarist Peter Klett and bassist Bardi Martin. Within a year of the band’s formation they were playing in Seattle’s trendiest clubs and by 1992 they scored a record deal with Madonna’s Maverick label.

Their first official release, the 4 track EP “Change” was issued in 1993 as well as their self titled debut. Their self-titled LP acted as breakthrough to mainstream success for the band, peaking at No.7 on the charts and selling over 4 million copies worldwide. This album housed 4 singles including the top 20 Billboard hit “Far Behind”. Frequent air play, high profile concerts and frequent television appearances trailed behind this release. This endless stream of successes also earned them a headlining spot at the Woodstock ’94 festival.

The group’s ascent into stardom seemed to awaken a creative streak and by the Spring of 1994 they had composed a total of 36 songs. Their next album “Lucy” featured 12 of the songs. Though the album was overshadowed by the prosperity of their previous release it nevertheless received heavy rotation on the radio and reached gold status. The album produced three singles, all which were translated into music videos (acclaimed filmmaker Gus Van Sant directed the video for “Understanding”).

The band’s 3rd studio album “Happy Pills” came out on 21 July 1998 and featured the hit “It’s Alright”. Also around this time they released the single “Glowing Soul”, which self-professed fan Adam Sandler specifically requested for the movie “The Waterboy”. “Happy Pills” marked the last album the band would release through Maverick and also the last they would release before disbanding. From 1999 to 2000, Candlebox lost two of it’s founding members, leaving Martin as the group’s sole originating member. The band imploded in 2000 and failed to satisfy their contractual agreement with Maverick, which required the band to output four studio albums through them.

Throughout the bulk of the 2000s Candlebox’s members pursued various side projects; however, they reformed in 2006 and issued a greatest hits compilation through Rhino later that year. The band’s 4th long waited studio album saw release in 2008 and cemented a 10 year gap between the release of their previous studio album. “Love Stories & Other Musings” came out on 3 April 2012 and entered the US Billboard 200 at No. 82 and the US Independent Chart at No. 17.

Live reviews

It seemed that everyone and their dogs had tightly packed into the Showbox Theatre for Candlebox's return to Seattle. Heading back to the place that made them famous, the pressure was on. However, there was no doubt in my mind that this would be a show to remember. The lights dropped, the band struck a few anticipatory chords, and Kevin swaggered on stage. Usually, the beginning of concerts are slightly awkward – noone's quite drunk enough and the band aren't entirely comfortable – but we were put at ease right from the word "go." Kevin playfully frolicked between the band and the audience, wearing his heart on his (well-tailored) sleeved with a voice filled with both energy and agility. All that was required of the other musicians was to follow him with understated confidence. Fortunately the venue was large enough to accommodate Kevin's voice and stage presence, yet had the same sense of intimacy as in smaller venues that I've seen them perform. Although the group was elevated above the crowd, Kevin was poised right at the edge of the stage and kept us involved. Hackneyed it may be, but "Far Behind" was the highlight without a shadow of a doubt. A fairly bias view as it's a personal favourite, but Kevin's note-perfect rendition against the strobe lighting and the passion of the audience and the band palpable in the air made for an experience that will stay with me for years to come. I will never tire of hearing it live. Frankly, the songs, the sweat and the strobes were sometimes corny and some unheard material wouldn't have gone a miss, but nevertheless Candlebox delivered an electrifying performance to their legions of avid followers.

Candlebox came through with a kick ass performance...I was thinking till the last song they forgot too play my favorite song in the whole world "Far behind" my best friend committed suicide 3 years ago and that song is what gets me through everyday! Now I have some harsh words too the people of "Nevermind Bar. I ate the food they served which was BBQ ribs, Chicken wings, and the Seafood eggrolls. Well I ate the eggroll the next morning I woke up and my face was swollen a bad reaction too the seafood. I went down there too talk to the manager, he was not there. So I asked the very nice lady that worked there, after explaining that my face was swollen. She told me that there was crab and scallops in the eggrolls. So she took my # down for the manager too call me back, which he did. He was not very pleasant at all and told my a different story than the one that the girl had told me. He tried too cover it up with lies telling it was pasteurised and basically told me I was on my own in a very rude manner. Now 2nd day in and my face is still swollen I am seeing my Dr. at 11:40 am. I have more complaints about this promoter I have a bad back it was torture standing there for 5 hours without a place too seat. also it was really tricky to eat really messy food without a table or bar too eat on....just saying it was very poor planning on his end! LOVE CANDLEBOX Hate the promoter or manager

Slim's is always a great venue for music. If you can live with the few people that have had too much to drink, you know the ones.... Always pushing to get a little closer to the band. Or those that spill beer all over your feet, step on your toes, you will always have a great time at Slim's. Saturday night was no exception. A much anticipated crowd was well primed by the end of Lullwater's set. PeteRg opened the show with a great set. Mixing up their broad range of sound and style. They had the crowd's attention by the time they finished. Lullwater came out and literally rocked the house. The crowd was jumpin and singing along with the band. Lullwater's guitar playing and harmonies were exceptional.

Candlebox held nothing back. Kevin and the boys left it all on the stage. It is so nice and fun to see a person that is so passionate about what he does. Kevin definitely is. The man has dedicated his life to his music. It really shows in his performance and the bands style. Candlebox is and will be an exceptional draw to any venue. If you haven't seen them yet... Get a ticket, and buy this new album. It won't disappoint.

Washington outfit Candlebox are intent on keeping the grunge movement alive with their mournful rock sounds. Forming in the 90s, they enjoyed large attention placed upon the genre as their peers including Nirvana and Soundgarden all broke out at similar times.

The group has shared stages with icons including Aerosmith, Radiohead and The Offspring so have had a variety of influences and these are present in the live show. The gloom has been dismissed and there is now an anthemic quality to older tracks such as 'Blossom' which sound brilliant when supported by a choir of fans chanting back the chorus. Kevin Martin thanks them for the continuous support and their reaction to new material played from 'Love Stories & Other Musings' which has not been as popular as the former releases yet the crowds still cheer and applaud with great energy. He thanks them by returning to a classic to close, 'Far Behind' is the highlight of the show by quite some distance due to its grunge tendencies and unassuming anthem quality.

I have been following Candlebox since the beginning roughly 25 years. I discovered them while living in Spokane and then Seattle. I was hooked instantly. Kevin Martin has a voice that is unmatchable to any other artist I've heard. I've seen countless rock shows and most recently their accoustic shows. Everything they do is amazing. They don't have a bad album. Their newest release Dissapearing In Airports is fantastic, I recommend it to everyone. WJRR Earthday Birthday Festival, was fantastic and even though a short set the energy and feel of the crowd was awesome. These guys truly love their fans as much as we love them. I love seeing the newer generation of Candlebox lovers, it proves to me that great music never grows old. Thank you Candlebox for all that you do! Hope to see you again soon!

I just love seeing this band. I have been to many of their concerts and they never disappoint. This time was no exception. They did all my favorite songs and this new album is just as amazing. Kevin has a voice of an angel! The rest of the band is awesome as well. Research these guys and/or follow them on Facebook. I say that because I have heard some of their music that I have never heard before. They know how to put the music together. So so good. I am not a person that takes time to write review but these guys deserve it! A True fan that will see them again in a few months when they come back to Arizona. I can't wait! Thank you song kick for always letting me know when they will be here :)

I'm a huge fan & I've seen Candlebox 3 times, they are ALWAYS GREAT. Last night tho at Ace of Spades in Sacramento CA they were absolutely amazing.

I didn't think they could get better but for whatever reason they were. They rocked the place and probably everyone outside too. Kevin Martin never ceases to amaze me with his powerful volcals and ability to engage the audience. His voice never waivers even after putting everything into each song.

I couldn't be happier with the decision to come see them again and if possible if there's a next time I'll be at that concert too.

Thank You Candlebox for one of the best nights of music I've ever been privileged to attend. You ROCK!!!

These guys put a lot of heart and soul into these shows. I hope my sister and I will get to see them again. We were lucky enough to share some drinks with the guys before the show and they are very humble, kind, gracious and freaken cool! I was so happy my cheeks hurt from smiling so much lol. They are the real deal, and if you are lucky enough to meet them, you will feel like family. Great guys! Kevin thanks for the drinks!

Absolutely amazing show!

We had a wonderful time and enjoyed some drinks with the guys before the show. My sister and I also got to watch from side stage during the show. As always the crew was very kind and attentive. They are a great group of people who do their best to give an epic show. If you ever get a chance to see them please do. Oh, also we had a special treat with the drummer from Godsmack playing on the song 10,000 horses. Also, such a nice guy to kick it with. So yes please go see them! It's called rock and roll...look it up :)

I have been wanting to see Candlebox for over 20 years, ever since I heard their first album, is to find out they were playing local to me I was very happy. And they did not disappoint. Performing some of their classic hits and songs from the excellent new album, they were amazing. How the lead singer is able to hit the notes he does after all these years is incredible.

We were also very lucky to chat tot he guys before their gig as they were watching the support act. Very nice guys.

Watch them and you will not regret it.

CANDLEBOX Announces Final Album 'The Long Goodbye'

CANDLEBOX will release its final studio album, "The Long Goodbye" , on August 25. The LP was produced by Don Miggs and will be made available via Round Hill Records .

"The Long Goodbye" was officially announced two days ahead of the launch of CANDLEBOX 's 30th-anniversary celebration and farewell tour. "The Long Goodbye Tour 2023" , which kicks off June 10 and runs through September 23, will feature a career retrospective of the band's extensive eight-studio album catalogue.

CANDLEBOX frontman Kevin Martin said in a statement: " Adam [ Kury ], BJ [ Kerwin ], Brian [ Quinn ], Island [ Styles ] and I are all super excited for everyone to hear this record. We pushed ourselves creatively as far as our hearts and souls would let us and created something that we're incredibly excited about and very proud of. We can't wait for the world to hear 'The Long Goodbye' , the final chapter in a long and illustrious career for CANDLEBOX . One last album on one last tour to wrap up 30 years of rock 'n' roll with a nice little bow."

The farewell tour dates, alongside CANDLEBOX 's support dates with 3 DOORS DOWN on their "Away From The Sun Anniversary Tour" , will hit amphitheaters in major markets across the U.S.

To celebrate, CANDLEBOX will offer VIP meet-and-greet packages at each 3 DOORS DOWN date, including a ticket, early entry, photo with the band, and merchandise.

Tickets for "The Long Goodbye Tour 2023" are available at www.candleboxrocks.com/tickets .

Additionally, a feature-length documentary, "Far Behind: The Candlebox Story" , is in the works for the group. Executive produced by Guy Oseary and Amy Decker and co-produced by Warner Music Entertainment ( WME ),the television and film division of Warner Music Group , and Highway West Entertainment , the film will explore the beginnings of what the world would come to know as the grunge scene, following CANDLEBOX on their rise to fame.

CANDLEBOX first formed in 1991 and helped lay the groundwork for the grunge genre, alongside notable bands such as PEARL JAM , SOUNDGARDEN , NIRVANA , and others.

CANDLEBOX has sold over seven million albums worldwide, scoring the megahits "Far Behind" and "You" , which have garnered over 100 million streams, decades after their initial release. The band's latest album, "Wolves" , had been in the top 10 on two Billboard charts (Hard Music Albums and Alternative Albums).

In May 2022, Martin announced plans to retire after the 30th anniversary of the release of the band's debut album in 2023. "I am retiring after next summer — yes, I am retiring," the CANDLEBOX frontman told the 94.3 The Shark radio station.

Noting that CANDLEBOX would celebrate its 31st birthday in October 2022, Martin said: "I don't know if I would have ever thought that CANDLEBOX would be around this long. I wanted it, of course; I think every kid wants to have that opportunity and a career that lasts decades, and I'm very grateful that it has. But there comes a time where my responsibilities as a husband and a father supersede my responsibilities to the music that I make. And that's kind of where I'm at. I enjoy it, but it's not the love of my life anymore. And that's, I think, when you as an artist you kind of have to recognize that and step away from it. And if it means that five years after that I decide that I wanna go out and do some shows, I'll do it; if two years after that I decide I'm going to do some shows… But I won't be doing the full-band tours for two, three, four months. I don't wanna do that. It's really, really hard. And I miss my family. And physically, it's very taxing. The way I sing, it's acrobatic, so it's not something that I wanna be performing and not have my voice work. So I'd rather go out on top, I think, is the term."

Although Martin plans on retiring from the road, he hasn't closed the door on making more music.

"I know that I've got another record I have to do," he told the 94.3 The Shark . "And people are saying, 'Well, if you do another record, you've gotta tour on it.' Well, that's not necessarily true. I would certainly want to and have people hear it, but I think that the case is that it's probably best for me to just accept that the mindset that I'm in and what I've decided for myself is what I need to do. As much as I may wanna keep singing and doing this and putting myself in the music the way I do, I have to recognize that I'm not in love with it the way I [once] was."

Kevin went on to say that "a lot of people" are telling him that he can't retire. "And a lot of those people are my bandmembers and my management," he revealed. "They're, like, 'You can't retire. People love you, and they love your music.' But like I said, man, I have got to put myself first emotionally in everything I do. And that's kind of where I'm at. I don't want to stop singing a song like 'Sometimes' that means the world to me, or 'It's Alright' or 'Far Behind' or 'You' , because I love them, but I just know that it's the decision I have to make."

Candlebox will support the run, which kicks off on June 14th in Baltimore and runs all the way through September 23rd in Sugar Land, Texas. Following the tour, Candlebox will also join 3 Doors Down for the latter’s 18th annual “The Better Life Foundation Concert” taking place at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort in Cherokee, North Carolina, on October 21st.

A Live Nation pre-sale starts Wednesday (March 22nd) at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster using the code OPENER , while a general on-sale begins Friday (March 24th) at 10 a.m. local time. Alternatively, you can look for deals or pick up tickets to sold-out shows via StubHub , where your purchase is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s Fan Protect program.

3 Doors Down released Away from the Sun in November 2002, and it has subsequently sold 8 million copies worldwide. The LP reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of hit singles like “Here Without You” and “When I’m Gone.”

“ Away from the Sun has always been a personal favorite of mine because of how much it resonated with our country’s [military] service members,” remarked 3 Doors Down singer Brad Arnold in a press release. “We are so blessed to be able to celebrate these significant milestones because we were very young making these albums, and we still have so much more life to give our fans.”

He continued: “The show we are planning will be next level this year. It’s going to be incredible to have Candlebox on tour with us. I’ve been a fan of theirs since I was a teenager.”

Candlebox Frontman Kevin Martin Explains Decision to End Group’s 30-Year Run

High costs and lack of support point to a music industry that is "completely f***ed," the rock frontman tells Billboa rd.

Kevin Martin knew there was a chance he might come off ungrateful detailing his many qualms with the music business on the 30th anniversary of Candlebox ‘s debut album and its monster single “Far Behind.”

But he did it anyway.

“The industry is completely f***ed,” the 54-year founder and sole original member of the American rock group explained, laying out a litany of indignities and double-standards ruining rock and irritating him as he makes his final trek across the U.S. for Candlebox’s Long Goodbye Tour.

Martin then clarifies that he is genuinely grateful to his core fans who have long supported the band, his wife and adult son who he spends months away from each year, and the guys in his band who recorded Candlebox’s seventh and final album, also named The Long Goodbye , which Martin believes is some of the group’s best work.

“I want it to be the defining moment of the band’s career, whatever the f*** that means,” Martin says.

“I don’t know what legacy means in this band’s whole realm because Candlebox has seen so many different incarnations and been pulled in so many different directions.”

Martin grew up in San Antonio and moved to Seattle in 1983 at the age of 14, eventually meeting Scott Mercado and then later guitarist Peter Klett and bassist Bardi Martin . Candlebox was signed by Guy Oseary to Madonna’s Maverick records in 1992 and released their self-titled debut album in 1993, eventually going quadruple platinum, selling more than 4 million albums thanks to heavy radio and MTV play for megahits “Cover Me,” “You” and “Far Behind.”

“As an artist I was at top of my game in the nineties and Maverick was killing it for Candlebox,” Martin said. But drug and alcohol abuse by bandmates “very quickly snuffed out our career” and after recording two more albums – 1995’s Lucy and 1998’s Happy Pills , the band decided to break up. Thanks to a key man clause in Martin’s contract that required him to turn in a fourth album, Martin became trapped in a legal battle for his band and a larger fight between Warner and Maverick. Martin today owns the band and makes decent money collecting royalties but says it took him 13 years to repay Warner Music to recoup a $250,000 advance.

Inside Linkin Park’s ‘Meteora’ Return & How It Spawned the Year’s Most Unlikely Rock Smash

Today, most Candlebox revenue comes from the $2.5 million per year the band generates on tour, playing headline shows and opening for bands like Three Doors Down, who’s support of former President Donald Trump is a frequent punchline on Martin’s bus.

Between the cost of his bus, the wages he pays to his band members and crew, and the non-stop nickel-and-diming he says he faces on a daily basis, he estimates his take home will be between $125,000 to $175,000.

“That’s a pretty shitty return,” he says. “I can’t take it anymore, missing my wife and my son, for this?”

He adds that he finds rock radio to be “pretty vanilla” noting, “You want to know why rock radio sucks? Because every f***ing band on it sucks.” As for labels like Round Hill where Candlebox found a new home, Martin comments that “they’re fine but no one does actual A&R work these days.”

Martin says he doesn’t plan to stop writing music and says the songs on Candlebox’s final album The Long Goodbye , like the track “Cell Phone Jesus,” are a preview of what’s ahead.

LIVE REVIEW: 3 Doors Down “Away From The Sun” Anniversary Tour with Candlebox

Pnc bank arts center in holmdel, nj on june 28th.

The summer is heating up and we are getting busy trekking around amphitheaters to catch all the big names in rock music touring. For some it is also the walk down memory lane. 3 Doors Down released Away from the Sun in November 2002, and it has subsequently sold 8 million copies worldwide. The LP reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of hit singles like “Here Without You” and “When I’m Gone.” Now 21 years later band embarked in the tour to relive those days. On June 28 th 3 Doors Down with Candlebox came to New Jersey’s PNC Arts Center in Holmdel.

Written by Andris Jansons

As 3 Doors Down vocalist and founder Brad Arnold said that Candlebox has been his favorite band since his teenage years. What a moment it has to be for him to be touring with them. Candlebox comes from Seattle, Washington and was formed in 1990. While considered as hard rock band it has that grunge influence, from Seattle grunge scene in the beginning of 90’s that was bustling with likes as Soundgarden, Nirvana and more. For the Candlebox this tour marks 30-year anniversary of the self-titled debut album released in July of 1993. It went to be multi-Platinum certified.

Bands set was filled with songs from that album, including – Change, Blossom, Cover Me. Candlebox also finished off the set with the probably biggest hit from it – You. It was preceded by another fan favorite Far Behind, the song that bands vocalist Kevin Martin dedicated to all fellow musicians that are no longer with us to name just a few he mentioned – Scott Weiland and Chris Cornell.

Kevin also shared touching story of the Vietnam Vet that he used to see and played the song dedicated to him He Calls Home.

For the bands rhythm guitar player Island Styles it was a homecoming as he is New Jersey native.

For me it was the second time seeing 3 Doors Down live, and it is amazing experience. The atmosphere and the connection to the fans is truly unmatched.

Band opened the set with Pop Song which was a bonus track on special edition from Away From The Sun, but never made as part of the album and as Brad Arnold said “What a great way to open the set with a song that nobody knows!”, and promptly followed with the hit song When I’m Gone and title song along with The Road I’m On and Ticket To Heaven. Then they took a step back and played Let Me Go from their third studio album Seventeen Days, before lunging back into Away From The Sun songs.

One particular song caused quite a lot of excitement. Here Without You always stirs up the crowd’s excitement, and while maybe it is not considered as big of the hits as Kryptonite and When I’m Gone it’s very melodic, sing-along friendly and has that romantic touch for all couples in the audience.

Other notable songs within the set were Duck and Run and Loser, for encore fans were treated with Landing In London and bands biggest hit Kryptonite.

2024 nit field and pairings announced.

The 2024 NIT field and pairings

INDIANAPOLIS---Seton Hall, Indiana State, Villanova and Wake Forest highlight the 32-team National Invitation Tournament field released by the NIT committee today.

A new format for 2024 includes two exempt teams from each of six conferences: Atlantic Coast, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC.

First round play is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 19 and 20, with the second round playing March 23 and 24. Quarterfinals will be held March 26 and 27 with four teams advancing to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis for the semifinals on Tuesday, April 2. The NIT will conclude with the championship game on Thursday, April 4.

First round action on campus sites features number one seeds, Seton Hall, Wake Forest, Indiana State and Villanova facing Saint Joseph’s, App State, SMU, and VCU, respectively.

Other first round games include North Texas at LSU, Boston College at Providence, UNLV at Princeton, Xavier at Georgia, Richmond at Virginia Tech, Cornell at Ohio State, Minnesota at Butler, Loyola Chicago at Bradley, San Francisco at Cincinnati, South Florida at UCF, Kansas State at Iowa, UC Irvine at Utah.

For the third-straight season, the NIT seeded only the top half of the 32-team field. The bottom 16 unseeded teams were placed into the bracket by the NIT Committee as close to their area of natural interest as possible.

Bradley is making its 23rd appearance in the National Invitation Tournament, the most of any school in the 2023 field.

“We’re excited about the field that we were able to put together,” said Tim Duncan, vice president of athletics and recreation at New Orleans and chair of the NIT committee. “There are going to be some great early round matchups and it’s truly exciting to bring the history of the NIT – College Basketball’s Beginning – to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.”

NIT games are being televised by ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN+. Additional NIT information can be found on www.NCAA.com/NIT .

R&B group En Vogue , country up-and-comer Jessie Murph and breakout Milwaukee rappers Certified Trapper and DC The Don are also among the headliners scheduled to play one of the festival’s eight primary stages June 20 to 22, June 27 to 29 and July 4 to 6 at Maier Festival Park on Milwaukee’s lakefront.

Illenium has been added as the eighth headliner for the festival's largest venue, the 23,000-person-capacity American Family Insurance Amphitheater, on June 27. A separate ticket will be required to see the show, but same-day Summerfest general admission is included. Tickets for Illenium's show will go on sale at 10 a.m. March 29 at the box office and summerfest.com, with prices (and opening acts) to be announced.

When does Summerfest 2024 lineup come out?

More headliners — including one more concert at the festival's largest venue, the American Family Insurance Amphitheater, and one final show at the BMO Pavilion — will be announced in the coming weeks. A full schedule featuring around 800 acts, most based in Wisconsin, is expected by late May.

How much are Summerfest 2024 tickets?

Single-day general admission tickets are $28 at summerfest.com. Three-day general admission passes are currently $62, and nine-day passes are currently $130, through Summerfest’s website and box office.

Special promotions, which will include multiple opportunities to get in for free, will be announced later this spring.

Summerfest general admission tickets don’t include reserved seats for headlining shows at the BMO Pavilion or access to the “Level Up” VIP deck for headliners at the Miller Lite Oasis. They also do not include access to any American Family Insurance Amphitheater concerts.

Prices will also range for “Level Up” access for each Miller Lite Oasis headlining show. "Level Up" tickets, at $100, include two beverages (from a list of select Pepsi and Miller Coors products); access to seating, a private bar and private restrooms; and same-day Summerfest general admission.
