Our environmental commitment is second to none. We run our tours the same way we run our company, with an eye on the triple bottom line: People, Profit & Planet. At Escape Adventures, we elected to pursue a more comprehensive approach to actually reduce our carbon footprint, rather than just offset it. We overhauled our entire operation — from our vehicles, to our buildings, to our procedures — to become an outdoor industry leader in the charge to help our people and our planet.

Exceptional Service and Exceptional Guides

Leading tours naturally followed from our passion of exploring our favorite places with our friends. Our support staff includes our reservation team who is there to answer your questions about the tours, our service team who prepares your bike and gear for the tour, and our guide team – the ones who take you into the great outdoors. The Best Support Vehicles

Having custom-made vehicles allows us to take you to places few other outfitters can, or will go. Every Escape Adventures tour is accompanied by at least one support vehicle, trailer, and in some cases a second and third transfer van. After purchase, we custom engineer our trucks, vans, and trailers by our on-staff mechanic to meet the unique needs of different tours. For example, certain vehicles are specifically designed for the Canyonlands region of Utah, while others are designed for The Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Each of our Trip Leaders is required to be trained in safe vehicle operation, 4X4 driving, and basic maintenance. Our experienced Trip Leaders make it look easy, transporting you and up to 12 guests, along with their bikes, fresh food, gear and plenty of drinking water to any location.

The Best Bicycles and Gear

Make your trip as comfortable as possible on the body, as simple as possible for traveling, and hassle-free on tour. By choosing to rent a bike from us, we will fit you with the newest, highest quality gear in the industry. Escape Adventures provides only high-end bicycles from Specialized. We replace our rental fleet each season to ensure all our rentals meet our high standards. All of our bikes are equipped carbon fiber frames and disc brakes designed for a smooth, comfortable ride. For those who are touring with a companion who may not be as fit or need a little help up the hills, we now have ebikes (electric pedal assist) available on select tours.

Scheduled Departure Dates

These tours leave daily from our Las Vegas based Escape Adventures Tour Center, which shares space alongside our award-winning bike shop–Las Vegas Cyclery.

We love JHMG – we have climbed with them twice already. We could not have done this without our wonderful guides who helped us with the reservations and logistics. On both occasions, we had a unique, both challenging and fun experience. More importantly, it was very safe. So worth it!

I would highly recommend taking the time to rock climb in Red Rock Canyon with JHMG service. It will be a trip to Vegas you won’t forget. The guides at JHMG are knowledgeable, experienced and will show you the best of what Red Rock has to offer.

Awesome experience: great guide, fantastic routes, perfect location and nice weather. What more could you possibly wish for?

Wow! What can I say? Thank you! I never thought I’d climb again and you guys gave me the confidence and encouragement to do it again. Today’s hike was long, but the view well worth it. Thanks for sharing a part of your life with me. Thanks again.

We also expect clients to respect local regulations and take measures to protect themselves, guides and the communities they’re travelling to. For more information on COVID-19 measures in Red Rock Canyon, NV, please refer to the Nevada Health Response webpage.

  • Duration: 8 hours
  • Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off at the Strip
  • Departure Time: 6 am
  • Includes: Air-conditioned vehicle, snacks

Are you looking for a tour where you spend even more time venturing out in the desert? If so, then check out the Valley of Fire and Seven Magic Mountains Day Tour from Las Vegas !

This 8-hour tour takes you through some of the most impressive natural and man-made beauty the Mohave Desert has to offer! This 8-hour journey starts off with a pickup at 6 in the morning at your hotel located either on the Strip or downtown Las Vegas.

It may be early, but this is so you can enjoy the entire day before the sun sets. First, you’ll stop at the Valley of Fire State Park, which covers over a massive 46,000 acres!

Named after the red Aztec Sandstone formations that have been around for over 100 million years, they look like they’re on fire when it’s particularly sunny out (which is almost always!).

Here, you’ll learn all about the area, where Native Americans once lived and left petroglyphs! You’ll have plenty of time to walk around, get in a bit of exercise, and take some photos!

Next, you’ll get back in the shuttle and head over to Seven Magic Mountains. This is a pretty cool art exhibit that was created by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone consisting of 7 painted boulder totems up to 35 feet tall.

As is typical of the artist’s sculptures, Seven Magic Mountains are painted in bright, neon colors that certainly contrast with the natural landscape in a fascinating way. This place is a hot Instagram location too!

3. Red Rock Canyon Hiking Tour

  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Departure:  The Mirage, 3400 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas
  • Departure Time: TBD
  • Includes:  2-2.5-hour guided hike, professional guide, bottled water, round-trip transportation by air-conditioned coach

If you don’t already have blisters from walking up and down the Strip or are a bit tired of working out in your hotel gym, we have just the alternative for you!

The Red Rock Canyon Hiking Tour lets you select from 3 different trail options, depending on your skill level and specific interests.

This is a great way to see a different part of Nevada, all while getting in some exercise and learning about this interesting desert landscape! Your tour will start off with you meeting the rest of your group at The Mirage, to be picked up.

The 4-hour tour (including round-trip transport) does have different pickup times, but we recommend going as early as possible to avoid the hot, hot heat and having more time throughout the day to do other activities.

If you are bringing younger children along, just make sure that they’re going to be able to keep up with the rest of the group as it is a hiking tour and the guides are on a schedule. Otherwise, it is great for just about any age of hiking experience level.

This hike is so much more than just walking through a beautiful desert landscape. You’ll get to learn all about the history of the area, and depending on the specific route you and your group take, you’ll even get to see some manmade pieces of history!

We loved each level, though the more difficult route gets you up high above the starting point, where you can even see views of Las Vegas!

4. Scooter Tours of Red Rock Canyon

  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off (selected hotels only)
  • Includes:  National Park fees, bottled water, professional guide, use of helmet

Ever thought of how fun it would be to get out of the traffic and zoom around freely over the Nevada desert? If so, then check out the Scooter Tours of Red Rock Canyon ! With a ton of different tour options, there really is something for everyone here!

You’ll start out by being picked up from your hotel in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. We found the staff to be incredibly friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. They keep your safety at the forefront, and make sure that everyone is comfortable the entire time.

Just know that if you’d like to drive the scooter by yourself, you have to be 18 with a parent and 21 with a valid driver’s license. Once you arrive at Red Rock Canyon, your guides will give you a brief lesson and tell you how to operate the scooters.

By the time you really set out on your 13-mile loop, you’ll already feel confident in how to use them. With a 25mph speed limit, it’s a great way to see the stunning rock formations and also learn about the area.

The guides are very well-informed and will teach you about the geology, history, wildlife, flora and fauna, and more. This is a place with a very rich Native American history, and will really give you a different perspective on Las Vegas and its surrounding landscape.

The guides will stop various times throughout the tour to let you take photos and show you particularly interesting sites. There are also plenty of restroom stops around, which we appreciated.

5. Red Rock Canyon Self-Guided Electric Bike Tour

  • Duration:  4 hours
  • Departure:  Hotel drop-off and pickup available
  • Includes:  All necessary equipment, bottled water, snack

This next tour is a fantastic way to get in some fresh air and exercise! Go at your own pace with the Red Rock Canyon Self-Guided Electric Bike Tour . As it is a self-guided tour, you get to make your own rules and don’t have to worry about going too fast or slow for the rest of your group.

Roundtrip pickup and drop-off from your Vegas hotel is included, so all you have to do is bring some comfortable cycling clothes, some sunscreen, and sunglasses!

Helmets are provided, along with your e-bike, bottled water, and a snack. Essentially, they’ll provide you with all necessary equipment. You get the choice of booking a sunrise ride at 9 am, or at 1 pm. This way, it’s easier to fit into a busy schedule! However, if you do have a bit of flexibility, we recommend the sunrise ride!

Not only do you get to see the electric red sunrise coming up over the mountains, but it’s also much less hot and sunny!

The electric bikes that are included do come with pedal assist, so if you’re not used to pedaling around hills and trails, you don’t have to worry. It’s great for the vast majority of physical fitness levels and are quite powerful. I

f you’re able to ride a “regular” bike on flat roads, then you can absolutely ride one of these. You’ll follow your map, traveling through Pine Creek Canyon Trail and Turtlehead Peak Trail.

If you like the idea of gliding down hills with the wind in your hair and amazing views in the distance, then this is the tour for you!

6. Las Vegas Red Rock Canyon Helicopter Tour

  • Duration:  30 minutes
  • Departure: 5596 Haven St, 5596 Haven St, Las Vegas
  • Departure Time:  TBD
  • Includes:  Air-conditioned vehicle

For this tour, we’re going to switch things up a bit (in a good way)! If you’re looking for a tour that’s shorter and easier to fit into a busier schedule, or really want to get the adrenaline pumping, we have just the ticket!

The Las Vegas Red Rock Canyon Helicopter Tour checks both of those boxes and a lot more! Las Vegas and the surrounding desert landscape is definitely captivating from the ground.

However, taking it in from aerial views is just something else. There are all different kinds of flight times available, so it’s really easy to fit into any schedule you may have planned for the day. We highly recommend the sunset flight slot!

Once you have your time selected, you’ll meet up with your guide just opposite the Mandalay Bay and Four Seasons Hotels. Free parking is also available for guests, so they really make it as convenient as possible!

At the Las Vegas terminal, you’ll be greeted by your pilot and escorted to the stunning helicopter! You and anyone else in your group will hop on board, and the pilot will answer any questions you may have and provide a short safety briefing.

Once you’re up in the air, it’s truly phenomenal! The pilot offers incredible insight into Vegas’ history, as well as the geology and history of the Red Rock Canyon State Park. The canyon looks completely different from up above, with its various colors and shades, unique rock formations, and more.

You’ll even pass over the Vegas Strip, including some of the most breathtaking downtown Las Vegas views, along with Caesars Palace, the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay Resort, Raiders Stadium, and more!

  • Duration: 4.5 hours
  • Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off offered on Strip
  • Departure Time: Variety Available
  • Includes:  3.5-hour scooter car tour, bottle water, guide

The Scooter Car Tour of Red Rock Canyon with Transport from Las Vegas is some of the most fun you can have! You’ll take the excitement of Vegas and bring it out to the desert on this tour! Zoom around the beautiful desert landscapes, take photos, and learn all about its history without having to worry about breaking a sweat!

This 4.5-hour tour does include roundtrip transportation from your Vegas hotel, making it one of the most convenient ways to see the area.

You don’t have to deal with proper walking shoes, or worrying that you’re not experienced enough to keep up with the rest of your group. These scooter car tours offer full 360-degree views that allow you to see the canyon like few other tours offer.

Once you arrive to Red Rock Canyon, your guide will provide you with your scooter car and offer a safety briefing. If you don’t feel like driving, you can always sit with a partner and take the passenger seat! Once everyone feels comfortable, you’ll start by following your guide out onto the road!

The canyon’s flora and fauna are rich, along with the Native American history. The Paiute used to live here, and it’s a great opportunity to learn more about how ingenious they were.

You’ll then get an up-close-and-personal look at the park, following your guide on a scenic loop. On this loop, you’ll see all kinds of magnificent rock formations, and perhaps even some wildlife like burros, jackrabbits, and tortoises!

If you’d like to come back for hiking or rock climbing, your guide can also make some recommendations for you. There are periodic stops along the way so you can switch drivers or take some photos.

Visiting Red Rock Canyon from Las Vegas: Scenic Drive, hikes, tours (2024)

Affiliate Disclosure for Destination Checkoff

Just a stone’s throw away from the neon lights of Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon offers a breathtaking escape to nature lovers.

We took a break from the Vegas Strip and drove to Red Rock Canyon on our most recent Vegas vacation with family .

I loved Red Rock’s stunning landscape, marked by dramatic red sandstone peaks and panoramic canyons, and the beautiful scenic drive through the park.

Whether you’re an avid hiker, a photographer in search of the perfect shot, or simply looking to soak in the serene beauty of the Mojave Desert, Red Rock Canyon is a must-visit destination.

In a hurry, and looking for a tour recommendation to Red Rock from Vegas?

➡ Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive Tour – 4-hour morning tour to explore the Red Rock Canyon scenic drive and stops. Great for photos!

How far is Red Rock Canyon from Las Vegas?

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is conveniently located about 17 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip, making it an easy and quick getaway for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

scenic drive from Las Vegas to Red Rock Canyon with mountains in the background

It took us around 20 minutes on an early Sunday morning as there was barely any traffic; most of the Vegas Strip was sleeping, I guess, after partying Saturday night! The drive was scenic, with colored mountains, as we neared the Red Rock Canyon.

Red Rock Canyon is one of the closest excursions from Las Vegas !

Ways to travel from Las Vegas to Red Rock Canyon

Drive yourself – The most flexible option is driving yourself. It allows you to explore at your own pace and make stops along the way. We had a rental car for our Vegas trip, so we drove to Red Rock park ourselves.

Take a Red Rock Canyon tour from Las Vegas – If you are not planning to rent a car, the next best option is to take a tour from Vegas. There are several tour options, which I will explore in the tours section below.

Rideshare services like Uber/Lyft – The least recommended option is to take a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft. It will be easy to get a ride from the Strip to Red Rock but hard to get the return ride.

Red Rock Canyon Entry Reservations

If you are traveling to Red Rock between October 1st and May 31st, you will need a reservation to enter the Red Rock Canyon scenic drive area. You can purchase a reservation online from the official Red Rock Canyon website .

We visited Red Rock in January 2024 and made a reservation. I was able to purchase it online just a day before, and it cost $22. The cost is per vehicle.

Screenshot of timed entry reservation ticket

While making your reservation, you have to pick a 1-hour entry timeslot. Once you enter, you can stay inside the scenic drive area for the entire day.

Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive

The two most popular activities at Red Rock Canyon are exploring the 13-mile scenic drive and hiking the numerous trails here. Rock climbing is also popular here.

Unfortunately, the day we went, the winds were very strong at around 45 miles per hour, and it was impossible to do any hiking in those strong winds. So we chose to do the scenic drive and explore all its stops.

windy road through Red Rock Canyon scenic drive with red, cream and grey mountains around it.

The scenic drive through Red Rock was a beautiful, windy road with fun dips and climbs that we enjoyed at a slow pace. There are pullouts to let vehicles behind you pass.

All of the parking lots for the various vista points and trailheads are on this one-way road.

Remember, the scenic drive is one-way throughout, so if you miss a stop, you cannot go backward to explore it later, so take your time.

Once you exit the drive, you cannot go back in if your 1-hour entry time is over. It will mostly be over as the scenic drive took us around an hour. It will be more if you do any hiking.

We saw a herd of burros (donkeys) in the meadow, but they were too far away to get a good picture.

A paved observation area to view the red colored Calico Hills with benches and information boards.

My favorite stops in the scenic drive were Calico Hills, High Point Overlook, Pine Creek Canyon, and Red Rock Overlook.

Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive is one of the best things to do with kids in Vegas !

Calico Hills

As soon we entered the scenic drive and passed the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center, we were greeted by striking red rock formations in the Calico Hills area.

These vibrant hills, colored by iron oxide, provide stunning photo opportunities, especially during sunrise and sunset when they glow intensely.

Red Rock formations at Calico Hills with an information board in the front

There are three stops here, each with its own parking lot – Calico I, Calico II, and Sandstone Quarry.

Calico Hills offers trails for all levels, from easy walks to challenging hikes. Calico Tanks is one of the most popular hiking trails here.

Hikers on the Calico Hills trail with red rock hills in the background

Even though the entire area is called Red Rock Canyon, I was surprised to see that red rock formations were only present in the Calico Hills area. The rest of the park did not have any red rock formations.

We had visited Valley of Fire from Vegas just a couple of days before, and between Red Rock and Valley of Fire , I think Valley of Fire had more impressive red rock scenery.

Anu’s Pro-tip: If visiting Valley of Fire, make sure to hike the Fire Wave , which is Valley of Fire’s best hike!

High Point Overlook

At High Point Overlook, we were treated to panoramic views of the entire Red Rock Canyon National Area, and the Calico Hills.

Views of Calico Hills and the desert landscape in the front from High Point Overlook

This is the most iconic vista point at Red Rock Canyon, as it is located at a higher elevation along the scenic drive. There is a parking lot here, as well as benches to admire the view.

Pine Creek Canyon

Nestled within the heart of Red Rock Canyon, Pine Creek Canyon offers a more secluded and lush environment compared to the desert landscape that dominates much of the area.

View of Pine Creek Canyon hills from the overlook

The moderate Pine Creek Canyon trail leads past an old homestead, towering canyon walls, and a meadow surrounded by pine trees.

Red Rock Overlook

Red Rock Overlook is right after we exit the scenic drive and provides accessible, stunning views of the Red Rock Canyon with minimal effort.

Views of Calico Hills from Red Rock Overlook. Red, cream and grey hills with desert landscape in the front.

There is a huge parking lot here, and we enjoyed sweeping views of Calico Hills and the rest of the Red Rock park right from the parking lot.

This wheelchair-accessible spot is perfect for quick stops, picnics, and enjoying unforgettable sunsets.

Red Rock Canyon Hiking

Apart from the scenic drive, hiking is one of the most popular things to do at Red Rock Canyon. Unfortunately, the day we visited, we faced very strong winds (45 miles per hour, no kidding!) and couldn’t explore much hiking.

I had checked with the park rangers at the Red Rock Visitor Center about the most popular hike here and was told it is the Calico Tanks trail. A reason to visit again for hiking the incredible trails here!

Hikers at the trailhead of Calico Tanks trail at Red Rock Canyon

Below are the most popular hikes at Red Rock Canyon –

  • Calico Tanks – Moderate 2.5-mile hike with 450-foot elevation gain. Starts at Sandstone Quarry. As per the ranger, you can see views of the Las Vegas Valley from the end point of this trail.
  • Petroglyph Wall Trail – Easy hike with less than a quarter mile of almost flat walk from the Willow Spring Picnic Area to see the Petroglyph Wall.
  • Turtlehead Peak – Difficult 5-mile hike with 2000 feet of elevation gain. The trailhead starts at Sandstone Quarry.

Below are some travel tips based on my experience visiting the Red Rock Canyon –

  • Go slow on the one-way scenic drive and take your time at the stops, as you cannot go back.
  • The turnaround time at parking lots was quick, and we never had to wait too long.

Because of its close proximity to Vegas, it’s very convenient to stay on the Las Vegas Strip and do a half-day trip or tour to Red Rock Canyon.

As you begin your journey through First Creek Canyon, you’ll be met with stunning views of sandstone cliffs and rocky ridges. Along your path, you may spot lizards scurrying away or some wildflowers if it’s been raining recently.

Once you reach the waterfall, you can take a break under one of the cottonwood trees and relax by its cascading waters. Even when there isn’t much water flowing over it, this area makes for an incredibly peaceful place to escape from everyday life for a while!

Looking for an easy yet rewarding exploration of the great outdoors? Look no further than the Moenkopi Loop at Red Rock Canyon! This 2-mile loop is the right distance to enjoy nature’s most beautiful desert views. The best part?

You can get a good overview of this mesmerizing area in only 1.5 hours. Keep reading to learn more about what you can expect from this incredible outing!

Begin your journey at the Visitor Center, and take in all of the beauty that Red Rock Canyon has to offer. As you traverse around this limestone ridge, keep your eyes open for various desert flora and even Triassic fossils!

If you’re up for a bit more exploring, there are connecting trails leading off from the Moenkopi Loop, which will take you into the Calico Hills area (2-mile loop). No matter where you venture off to, prepare yourself for panoramic views of the Wilson Cliffs – a sight that will truly take your breath away.

The terrain is mostly flat with little elevation change and is considered easy by experienced hikers. Plenty of overlooks and benches are scattered along the way, so you can take breaks if needed.

Calico Hills

This trail runs along the base of the Calico Rocks from Calico Basin to Sandstone Quarry. Depending on where you access it, the distance can range from 2-6 miles and generally takes 1.5-3.5 hours to complete. While this trail is considered moderate in difficulty, it’s worth it for the breathtaking views and fun challenge!

The trails along Calico Hill offer great views and some fun obstacles. As you make your way up and down hills and around rockslides, you will get a fantastic view of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and distant mountain ranges, including Mount Charleston and Griffith Peak.

Along with incredible scenery, hikers should also expect some technical terrain, such as boulder fields and sandstone ledges, that add an extra challenge for experienced hikers looking for more than just a leisurely stroll through nature’s beauty.

The easiest way to access this trail is from either of two parking lots—one near Sandstone Quarry or one in Calico Basin. Alternatively, if you don’t want to commit to an entire loop hike but still want to enjoy part of the scenery, there’s also a side trail that runs from the fee booth parking lot that connects with this main loop (2–6 miles).

Whichever route you choose, rest assured that all routes offer spectacular vistas!

Turtlehead Peak

Looking for a challenging hike with an incredible view? Look no further than Turtlehead Peak in Red Rock Canyon. This 4.6-mile hike takes an average of 3.5-4.5 hours to complete, and it is rated as strenuous due to its elevation gain and technical terrain.

But the payoff at the summit is worth every step—you’ll be treated to one of the most stunning panoramic views of Red Rock Canyon! Read on for more details about this amazing hike.

Turtlehead Peak is located in the Mojave Desert outside Las Vegas, Nevada, in the famous Red Rock Canyon Recreation Area. At 8,037 feet above sea level, it requires some serious effort to reach the summit—but those who make it will be rewarded with sweeping views of Red Rock Canyon below them.

Experienced hikers should only attempt this hike with a good fitness level due to its length and elevation gain (2,200 feet). It’s also important to note that this area can get extremely hot during summer; if you’re visiting between April and October, you should plan your trip for early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler.

Windy conditions can also occur year-round—so don’t forget your windbreaker!

The trail begins at the Pine Creek Trailhead near mile marker 15 on State Route 159. It follows a well-marked path up Turtlehead Mountain Ridge that winds through desert shrubs and cacti before reaching an open flat area at the top where you’ll find panoramic views across all of Red Rock Canyon.

The hike down will take between 1-2 hours, depending on how fast you walk; keep an eye out for lizards skittering across your path!

Although this strenuous 4.6-mile trek takes around 3.5-4.5 hours roundtrip, it’s worth every step for experienced hikers who are looking for a challenge with an incredible view as their reward!

Ice Box Canyon

This 2.2-mile trail takes hikers through a shady box canyon with seasonal waterfalls from December to April. But be warned, this trail is considered strenuous due to its rugged terrain and the fact that it requires crossing the open desert to get there.

Once you cross the open desert and start on the trail, prepare for an experience like no other. The canyon rarely sees sunlight, making it significantly cooler than the surrounding areas—a welcome reprieve from the desert heat.

As you make your way down into the canyon, you will come across several pools of cool water and will be able to experience natural phenomena such as seasonal waterfalls (December-April). Once at the canyon’s end, enjoy taking in the views before heading back out.

The hike is considered difficult due to parts of it requiring climbing over boulders and loose rocks within the wash. It’s best to wear shoes with good grip for these sections and bring plenty of water and snacks for energy along with sun protection such as hats or umbrellas.

Additionally, when hiking in a remote area like this one, always remember to leave no trace behind by packing out any garbage or food scraps you might have brought.

Ice Box Canyon is an incredible adventure that should be experienced by avid hikers looking for a challenge in one of nature’s most unique settings! Get ready for an unforgettable journey; remember to take all necessary precautions before embarking on your journey and enjoy!

Keystone Thrust

This 2.4-mile hike has an average completion time of 1.5 hours and is moderately difficult.

The trailhead for the Keystone Thrust Hike is situated in the Sandstone Quarry parking lot, located off Highway 160. When you reach the Sandstone Quarry parking lot, park in the designated area or risk a ticket or a tow!

As you go down the trail, keep an eye out for signs pointing toward the Keystone Thrust. You’ll know when you’ve reached it; look up and behold its grandeur!

As mentioned above, on average, this 2.4-mile hike takes around 1.5 hours to complete. However, if you’re looking to take your time and really explore this magical land, it could take much longer!

You can expect an array of stunning sights as you traverse this ancient land – witness limestone layers rolling over sand dunes as they have done since millions of years ago when tectonic plates collided in what was known as ‘the great shove’ – pushing up the Sierra Nevada mountains on one side and creating Red Rock Canyon on the other!

White Rock Willow Springs

This four-mile loop is rated as “moderate” and takes around 2.5 hours to complete. Let’s break down this incredible trail and discover what makes it so special.

The adventure begins at the upper parking lot at White Rock Spring, located in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. You will take the trail on the west side from here until it splits with both directions descending downhill.

To your right, you will find a guzzler—a man-made water hole—while taking the left path will lead you through a wash and then up over a ridge before dropping into the Lost Creek area.

This part of the hike can be particularly enjoyable as it showcases some of Nevada’s most beautiful scenery, including breathtaking rock formations, vast desert landscapes, and vibrant wildflowers during springtime.

After winding your way through the Lost Creek area, you will arrive at Willow Springs, approximately two miles from your starting point at White Rock Spring.

From here, you reverse your steps to make your way back over the ridge, through the wash, and down to where the trail splits once again, bringing you back to White Rock Spring after completing four miles of desert exploration!

With its moderate difficulty level, this four-mile loop is great for hikers of all skill levels, making it perfect for anyone looking for a fun outdoor adventure.

Are you looking for a challenge? Look no further than the Kraft Mountain Loop Hiking Trail, nestled in the Calico Basin of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

This trail is not for the faint of heart; it is a strenuous 3.5-mile loop featuring intense elevation gain and rock scrambling. But with its unique views, colorful wash, and rugged terrain, conquering this trail will be an unforgettable experience.

The hike starts at the end of Sandstone Drive within Calico Basin. Follow the trail around Kraft Mountain as it takes you into a colorful wash—where red and orange hues dominate the landscape as far as your eyes can see.

Make sure to take plenty of water and snacks, as this challenging loop can take between 2.5 and 3 hours to complete depending on your speed.

As you make your way up Kraft Mountain, you’ll be surrounded by rocky cliffs that offer stunning views of Las Vegas Valley—and if you’re lucky enough to catch a glimpse of one of Red Rock’s many species of rare birds or wildlife, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to another world entirely.

After making your way down the mountainside again, cross over the creek bed and make your way back to where you started!

Gene’s Trail

This 2.6-mile roundtrip hike is perfect for anyone who wants to explore the natural beauty of Calico Basin and take in the breathtaking views of Las Vegas. The trailhead is easily accessible off SR-159, so it’s perfect for a day trip from the city! Let’s explore this hidden gem in more detail.

Along with these views, keep your eyes peeled for various yucca plants and cacti as you make your way along this trail.

The trail is easy to navigate, with a large black trailhead sign marking its beginning. It eventually merges with Kraft Mountain Loop Trail at the northern end of Calico Basin, which can be used as an alternate route if you choose to make the hike longer than 2.6 miles roundtrip—or even turn it into a full loop! For those looking for a shorter hike, turn around at any point on the trail to head back towards your starting point.

Dale’s

It’s perfect for hikers who want to explore something new and adventurous yet still have time to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Let’s take a look at some of the features that make this trail so special.

This 4-mile route offers something that many other trails in the area don’t—it follows a fairly gentle grade most of the way, but it also has several short, steep sections.

These sections are great for hikers looking for an extra challenge, as they provide an opportunity to test your stamina and strength. Most of the route is relatively flat, however, so there’s plenty of opportunity to explore without having to worry about running out of energy too quickly.

You can take a short hike along the 0.4-mile loop trail into Pine Creek Wash. It’s an easy hike that takes about 1 hour to complete and offers insight into how prescribed burns can help reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires. Read on to learn more!

The Bureau of Land Management performed a prescribed burn in 1992 to clear brush and reduce the chances of a catastrophic wildfire killing off tall ponderosa pines in the wash.

As you walk along this 0.4-mile loop, you’ll be able to see evidence of this effort. Little remains from the fire itself, but it’s clear that their efforts have been successful so far in reducing fire risks for these trees and other vegetation surrounding them.

The Petroglyph Wall Trail is a 0.4-mile out-and-back trail that takes you across a wash and towards a cliff-side featuring thousands of petroglyphs estimated to be 800 years old or more.

The petroglyphs are mostly found on the cliffs in the area, so take your time examining them as you go along. When you come upon the wall, look for symbols such as animals, plants, people, and geometric designs carved into the rock by ancient cultures.

The carvings, created by members of the Paiute and Shoshone tribes, tell stories about life in this area over centuries. Each image has its own meaning; some believed to symbolize fertility, while others depict hunting scenes or human figures with arms raised in prayer or celebration. While deciphering the exact meanings of each design can be tricky (especially given their age), they offer us a fascinating insight into how life was lived in this part of Nevada centuries ago.

Walk Through The Antelope Canyon

Antelope is the most snapped slot canyon in the southwest of the United States because of its wave-like structure, which gives the canyon a distinctive appearance. Summer is the most popular season for exploring the canyon since the weather is milder and there is less possibility of rain. Visitors from all over the world come to see its magnificent red and orange sandstone cliffs, which were eroded over many years by wind and water. Because of the canyon's unusual geometry, the sunlight reflects off its walls in fascinating patterns, producing a constantly shifting light display.

Explore Bryce Canyon And Zion National Park

Bryce Canyon, which is celebrating an entire century of wonder, is most renowned for its hoodoos, which are artistically sculpted rock spires that erosion has left intact. The greatest places to see hoodoos are along our day hiking paths, which provide a close-up and personal view of these unusual rock formations. The Bryce Canyon Amphitheater region is where you'll find the majority of the gorgeous day hikes and trailheads. In contrast, the backcountry paths of Bryce Canyon provide woods and meadows, breathtaking vistas of far-off cliffs, and isolation, but fewer hoodoos. On the other hand, Zion's distinctive collection of flora and animals will amaze you as you take in the past's rich history and the present's exhilarating experiences.

hiking tours red rock canyon

When it comes to outdoors, Mississippi is a diverse place . From the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the northeast to its piney woods of the southern region and more in between, there is a lot of beauty to experience.

Arguably, there's no better way to experience it than the peace and quiet of hiking and spring is a great time to do just that.

So, here are seven unique places where hikers can take in the views, see wildlife and enjoy what Mississippi's outdoors have to offer.

Wilderness hiking along scenic Black Creek

Black Creek Hiking Trail is located in the DeSoto National Forest near Brooklyn and at 40 miles, it's one of the longer trails in Mississippi.

The trail meanders along Black Creek Wild and Scenic River through the hidden beauty of the piney woods of South Mississippi. The trail can be accessed from the MS 29 Trailhead, Fairley Bridge Landing, CCCCamp, and Big Creek Landing. The trail is for foot traffic only and camping is allowed 150 feet off the trail.

For more information, visit the US Forest Service website or call 601-528-6160.

Your feet will stay dry while hiking through this swamp

Cypress Swamp Trail offers a unique view of an abandoned section of the Pearl River channel at mile marker 122 on the Natchez Trace near Canton. A boardwalk will take you over the shallow water and through cypress trees on this easy, 4/10-mile hike. There's plenty of wildlife to see including alligators.

The Yockanookany Section of the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail is located directly across the Parkway from the Cypress Swamp site. Hikers may hike 14.1 miles to the West Florida Boundary or 8.9 miles to the Yockanookany Trailhead or any distance they choose.

Dogs are welcome but must be leashed.

Cycle or hike on this South MS paved path

The Longleaf Trace is a hiking and biking trail that runs 44 miles from Hattiesburg to Prentiss. It follows the path of an abandoned railway and makes its way through five communities, so you can explore as little or as much of it as you choose.

Restrooms, parking, primitive camping and food and drinks are available along the way. There is also an equestrian trail for horseback riders. In addition to scenic views and wildlife watching, there are fishing opportunities as well.

For more information, call 601-450-5247.

Take a short hike at Mississippi's Grand Canyon

Soil erosion doesn't seem like something that would turn an area into a top destination in Mississippi, but at Red Bluff, that's exactly what's happened. Natural erosion from the Pearl River has formed a canyon and exposed beautiful red and orange soil and created a breathtaking view.

Visitors can take the 30-minute hike through the area and take in the sights, so be sure to have a camera. Hikers can also access the nearby Pearl River.

According to Visit Mississippi, finding Red Bluff can be a little tricky. Red Bluff is situated along MS 587 in Marion County, just northwest of Morgantown. Look for an alcove that is typically used for parking.

Take a hike through a town that is no more

You can't really call it a ghost town because the town is no longer there, but Rocky Springs is a great place to camp, hike and explore.

Located at mile marker 54.8 on the Natchez Trace Parkway between Clinton and Port Gibson, Rocky Springs was once a flourishing town of 2,600 until the Civil War, disease, erosion and other factors led to its demise. The most visible signs of it today are a church and cemetery.

Visitors can take a self-guided tour, hike its 7-mile Rocky Springs Trail or hike 3 miles to Owens Creek Waterfalls. Bathrooms and camping spots are available, but currently there is no potable water onsite.

Find scenic views and therapeutic well-water at Spyglass Hill Trail

Spyglass Hill Trail may not be a place you've heard about, but it's definitely one you'll want to visit.

Overlooking Enid Lake in North Mississippi, it's a 22-mile trail with camping, hiking and horseback riding opportunities as well as a chance to experience history. According to americantrails.org , the trail has views of Enid Lake and wildlife can be encountered there.

The trail takes visitors through Ford's Well, a site that became popular in the late 1800s for its water that was thought to have therapeutic qualities and was bottled as Ford's Mineral water. The campground has 12 campsites with water, electricity, grills and other amenities.

A Mississippi state park that's a jewel

If you've never been to Tishomingo State Park in Northeast Mississippi, spring is a great time to enjoy it and see a unique part of the state.

Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, it has topography unseen in any other part of the state and nearby Woodall Mountain is the highest point in Mississippi. As the name implies, it also has historical significance. The park takes its name from the noted Chickasaw nation chief, Tishomingo, but its Native American roots go back much further. Archeologists have documented the presence of native people in the area as far back as 7,000 BC.

The park has seven nature trails ranging from less than a mile to 3 miles and are considered easy to moderate hikes. They include rock formations found nowhere else in the state.

The park also offers kayaking and camping opportunities as well as fishing and a host of amenities.
