Modern family: the family's vacations, ranked from lamest to coolest.

On Modern Family, Phil, Claire, Gloria, and co. loved to travel together, but some vacations were definitely better than others on the popular sitcom.

The fun-loving characters on  Modern Family stay close to home throughout the series but every so often, work or leisure drives the Dunphys, Tucker-Pritchetts, and Delgado-Pritchetts outside of their four walls and into a new environment.

Over 11 seasons, the family-oriented group headed to the Midwest, their own state of California, and abroad. During each excursion, the large family learned something about themselves and learned from their past mistakes. Regardless of where in the world these families are, they're always together and bonding on different levels.

But each getaway isn't created equal. Some vacations go horribly wrong but have a sweet ending, or some are just plain stressful. So, which vacation came out on top?

Palm Springs, California

In the fourth season, the entire family traveled two hours to Palm Springs for a little getaway for New Year's Eve. Jay claimed this specific hotel was the best of the best and he had fond memories of being there in the past.

But when the group showed up, things had changed. The hotel wasn't what Jay remembered it and no one was impressed. Each couple wanted to do something else instead of watching the ball drop at a dinner table. Because of the disagreements and rundown hotel, this getaway wasn't their best trip.

To be fair to the Dunphy family, heading down to Florida was anything but a vacation; they were there for Phil's mom's funeral. While the Dunphys were grieving, everyone else was just happy to get out of California for a short while.

Mitchell was excited to get away from his job and help Gloria in the Florida courtroom, Cam enjoyed meeting senior citizens who loved to gossip as much as he did, and the kids were content being outside lounging in the Florida sun. While it was a somber affair, everyone came together to support Phil and Frank and had a special time.

The Mountains (Somewhere In California)

In "White Christmas," Gloria wanted the family to have a white Christmas, so she planned a holiday getaway in the mountains. The entire clan made the trip, including little Joe's "manny," Andy. Gloria warned everyone that it was going to be cold and snowy but when they got there, she realized she read the temperature in Celsius — it was the opposite of cold and snowy.

The Christmas getaway ended up being a dramatic yet loving affair. Everyone found out that Haley was sleeping with Andy, Jay announced he was retiring and giving the company to Claire, and Alex realized she wasn't the nicest person to her family. It was an endearing episode and a quaint getaway.

Disneyland, Anaheim, California

In the third season, the entire family heads to Disneyland for a day of fun. Alex and Haley are excited to have a handsome guest join them, Cam and Mitch are embarrassed at having Lily on a leash, and Gloria tries getting Manny to act like a kid. The day was especially fun for Luke and Phil, who went on as many rides as they could.

While Disneyland isn't far from their homes near Los Angeles, it's still a day-cation that got everyone out of their comfort zone.

New York City, New York

In "A Tale of Three Cities," the Dunphys are wrapping up a summer getaway in New York City. When Claire and Phil decide to take a road trip back home , the Dunphy kids secretly stay in New York a little longer without their parents knowing. This episode was sweet because it showed the siblings actually getting along and enjoying their time on the East Coast. Funny enough, Phil and Claire also decided to stay behind in New York City. The couple and their children almost ran into each other a handful of times but dodged each other.

Las Vegas, Nevada

In season 5, all of the adults went to Las Vegas for a weekend of fun. As usual, motives got twisted and white lies were told, which made this weekend getaway chaotic instead of fun.

Mitchell ran into his ex-boyfriend, which stirred the pot between him and Cam , Phil was trying to impress a secret world of magicians, and Claire spent the whole day trying to make money back that she borrowed from their savings. At the end of the trip, it seemed like everyone enjoyed their time but the drama that followed their lies was par for the course in Las Vegas.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

"Dude Ranch" had the family traveling to Wyoming for a vacation unlike the others. Instead of going to a popular city where shopping and eating are at the forefront, the entire family went for a Western experience in Jackson Hole.

Cameron felt completely at home surrounded by rolling hills and horses but everyone else was a little out of their element. Phil was upset that Jay didn't respect him, and Jay was upset that their host was flirting with Gloria . To add more flames to the fire, Dylan joined the Dunphys. He proposed to Haley at a campfire , which caused quite a stir between Claire and Haley. As always, the family became closer after the trip but a lot went down.

Paris, France

When Jay was won a big-time award for the closet industry, most of the family traveled to Paris to support him during the ceremony. Phil surprised Claire on the trip, Cam had the opportunity to be a street-performing clown, and Claire ran into an older lover. However, when Jay found out he didn't actually win the award, the trip took a turn for the worse.

Eventually, the whole family came together to bring Jay's spirits back to where they belonged. Oddly enough, this episode didn't have Haley, Lily, or Joe in it. And Alex and Luke only made brief cameos.

Maui, Hawaii

"Hawaii" was a fun episode for Modern Family because Gloria planned a surprise trip to Maui without Jay knowing it. She invited the entire family and even paid for most of their tickets. When the family arrived, Phil tried turning the vacation into a makeshift honeymoon for him and Claire, and Jay was shocked when he realized how old he was getting. It was also in this episode that Haley got drunk for the first time , which oddly brought her and Claire closer together.

The end of the episode was the best because Phil planned a surprise wedding for him and Claire. They eloped years ago and never got the chance to get married in front of their family.

Sydney, Australia

Traveling to Sydney Australia is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of trip because of how far away it is from North America. The fact that everyone was able to make the trip was very special for Phil. It was because of his mom's passing that the family traveled to Sydney in the first place. He wanted to feel connected to his mom and planned an entire trip surrounded by family.

As always, plans went awry and things became dramatic in the best kind of way. Phil felt like Australia hated him, Mitch and Cam realized their Australian friend was actually a celebrity, and Haley and Alex taught Lily about boys. It was fun to see everyone's favorite modern family down under.

Hey, Modern Family , you just won the top comedy prizes at the Screen Actors Guild and Producers Guild awards! Where are you going next? Las Vegas and Australia! First up, it's an adults-only trip for a wild Sin City weekend. "Jay's [ Ed O'Neill ] client returns a favor by comping a few Mandalay Bay adjoining suites that share a butler," says executive producer Christopher Lloyd of the ABC comedy. "Claire [ Julie Bowen ] turns out to be a manic gambler who discovers Gloria [ Sofia Vergara ] is her good-luck charm at the tables and won't let her go."

Mitchell ( Jesse Tyler Ferguson ) and Cameron ( Eric Stonestreet ) are invited to a wild bachelor party for Mitch's old beau Langham ( Fred Armisen ), and Patton Oswalt plays the head of a secret society of magicians that Phil ( Ty Burrell ) aspires to join. "The episode becomes a big sex farce with slamming doors and monkeys," Lloyd says. "There's a scene with Gloria wearing something skimpy. It makes The Wolf of Wall Street look like Sesame Street !"

Later this month, the whole cast is set to fly to Sydney for a spring storyline in which Phil learns he was conceived Down Under. "Phil wants to be Australian, but the country is very rough on him," Burrell says. "Luckily, I don't have to be good at the accent."

Some characters are expected to climb the iconic Harbour Bridge, Lloyd says. Cam and Mitch end up on a tandem motorcycle, and Manny ( Rico Rodriguez ) and Luke ( Nolan Gould ) hunt for a nude beach. Gould is already excited for that scene, though not without some hesitation. "I'm only 15, so it's a little weird," he says. "There are certain strangers I definitely wouldn't want to see nude!"

Modern Family : "Las Vegas"

“Las Vegas” is the first episode of Modern Family ’s fifth season that I had especially high hopes for, because… y’know, Las Vegas. Vegas is an error-proof backdrop for comedy, because it permits flexibility with the characters. The city flaunts its reputation as a quasi-deity that demands you sacrifice your judgment and conscience in tribute to its garden of grubby delights. With that as the baseline, there are endless directions to take these characters.

That said, “Las Vegas” surpassed my expectations. I presumed I’d like it, but I thought I would like it about as much as I’ve liked the rest of this season’s episodes just because I’m so fond of the setting. But this is the second episode of the season (the first was “The Old Man And The Tree” ) that I’d feel comfortable putting up against anything in this show’s first two seasons. It clips along at an incredible pace, and it swells to a satisfying crescendo.

The satisfying crescendo was once Modern Family ’s bread-and-butter, but the most recent examples haven’t worked as well as they once did. That is, until “Las Vegas,” which boasts a third act that is like a master class in controlled chaos. The episode starts out a little slowly, but reveals itself to be so marvelously constructed that its blemishes become hard to notice.

“Las Vegas” is an interesting episode for a variety of reasons, one being the less-is-more aspect of an adults-only episode. The challenge Modern Family presents is how to combine its characters in ways that feel fresh and make sense for the story. That’s hard enough for a sitcom about sexy 20-something singles working an office job together, but for a show about a multi-generational, multi-racial family, it’s especially difficult. The writers can’t randomly draw character names out of a hat and watch the story write itself.

I can’t help but wonder if Modern Family ’s slow march into lethargy has less to do with recent, individual choices and more to do with the show’s basic premise, which is not self-limiting, but it’s certainly restricting. Part of what made “Las Vegas” so much fun was that it felt like the show had taken off the parking brake just by giving the kids a week off. You can’t really make a show about parenting without the kids, but having them out of sight was surprisingly energizing.

“Las Vegas” is also interesting because of its more -is-more aspect: an inspired trio of guest stars in Fred Armisen, Patton Oswalt and Stephen Merchant. All three earned their paychecks, but the gold star has to go to Merchant, whose weirdly enthusiastic butler Leslie Higgins is among the finest guest performances the show has seen. Higgins is a character that could have easily come across more like an inventory of qualities than like an actual human being. But Merchant lent Higgins some weight.

The Higgins character is indicative of the absurdity that makes “Las Vegas” such a delight. The script, penned by a trio of long-time ModFam staffers Paul Corrigan, Brad Walsh and Bill Wrubel, is one of the weirdest in the show’s history. In addition to the creepy omnipresence of Higgins, the episode features Rebarka, Barkley the Dog Butler’s female counterpart, a Scottish-themed male revue called The Kilty Pleasures and Phil’s induction into a secret society of sad magicians. Oh, and Jay’s Kafkaesque ordeal with the multi-tiered Excelsior loyalty program.

There’s so much to pack in, “Las Vegas” dispenses with the “Hey guys, how about a weekend getaway?” drum-rolling and gets right down to business, with the Dunphy-Pritchett couples in the Mandalay Bay staying in a connected suite of rooms courtesy of Jay’s closet client. The beginning of the episode feels a little bumpy, especially with Gloria trying to prevent Jay from buying Rebarka, which feels immediately tiresome.

But it proved worth it when the stories collided in the suite in a third act that was as sharp and confident as anything Modern Family has done. This is the type of experimentation that will buy Modern Family as much creative adoration as commercial success, even as it ages.

Stray observations:

  • Higgins, on the luxury bath choices: “Our Pharoah’s Fantasy does take a dash longer, as our Nubian lives off-site.” I want a Higgins spin-off.
  • Mitchell’s wistful riff on “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” was pretty hysterical.
  • “Las Vegas, you have a gambling problem. And her name is Claire.”
  • I complain about the show’s reliance on gay puns, but I enjoyed the Kilty Pleasures.
  • Ty Burrell’s commitment to Phil’s line rifling off the names of the magic legends is yet another example of why he’s this show’s greatest weapon.

  • Trivia The Elwood Grill (as identified by exterior shots) where several pairs of characters eat throughout the night, is actually located in Detroit, MI. It was built in 1936, and was relocated in 1997 for the construction of Comerica Park. It is now located adjacent to the stadium, behind left field. The footage used in this episode is stock footage: while the exterior remained essentially the same (though restored) after the move, the surroundings are now very different. There is a fenced in outdoor seating area, and views from the same angle as in the footage now include a large parking structure right next door.

15 family-friendly hotels in Las Vegas for a winning vacation

Tarah Chieffi

Editor's Note

You may not immediately think of Las Vegas as a family-friendly destination , but Vegas has more for families than meets the eye. Not only are attractions on and off the Strip geared toward families, but many Las Vegas hotels are also specifically designed to include features and amenities that appeal to families.

Even if they aren't part of a major hotel loyalty program , many Las Vegas hotels participate in their own rewards programs . Quite a few properties included on this list are part of MGM Rewards , for example, which can help you earn points on your hotel stay while taking advantage of exclusive discounts.

What does Las Vegas offer for families?

So, what exactly makes Las Vegas so family-friendly ? One of the main draws is the destination's affordability — visitors don't need to break the bank during a trip to Vegas thanks to a huge range of hotel types, many of which are budget-friendly. Plus, it's very easy to find hotels that offer suite-style accommodations or connecting rooms, which are ideal for family travel.

There are also plenty of free activities for families to enjoy around Vegas, from fountain shows (like the one at the Bellagio) to epic playgrounds and even a free aquarium at the Silverton Casino Lodge. With dozens of kid-friendly attractions, live shows, family-friendly resorts and delicious restaurants, Vegas has everything a family needs for a memorable getaway.

If a visit to Las Vegas is in your family's future, here are 15 Las Vegas hotels with pools, entertainment, arcades and more offerings that kids will love.

Mandalay Bay 's 43-story-high tower is located at the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip and overlooks the resort's massive pool complex — a major selling point for families visiting Sin City. The 11-acre complex has a wave pool, lazy river, lagoon-style pool, a sandy beach and more.

Families can also visit the on-site Shark Reef Aquarium ($29 for adults, $24 for kids between 5 and 12, free for kids 4 and younger), dine at the resort's more than 20 restaurants and take in a live Cirque du Soleil show.

Standard rooms have two queen-size beds and sleep up to four guests. They have large bathrooms with a separate shower and tub and twin vanities, so everyone has space to get ready. Rooms with views of the Las Vegas Strip are also available.

Rates at Mandalay Bay for a family of four start at $229 per night, plus taxes and fees.

The Mirage has as much fun for families on the outside as it does on the inside. Outside, kids will love the daily eruptions from the hotel's iconic volcano and swimming in the large resort-style pool with cascading waterfalls. Inside, they can explore the tropical gardens in the large glass atrium and observe the 450 fish that live in the 20,000-gallon saltwater aquarium in the lobby.

Families will also appreciate the variety of kid-friendly dining options, including pizza, burgers and frozen yogurt, and family-friendly entertainment like Cirque du Soleil and magic shows.

Standard rooms have either one king or two queen beds and upgraded views of the Strip or the volcano for an additional fee. "Stay Well" rooms with air and water purifiers, aromatherapy and memory foam mattresses are also available.

Kids will fall in love with the Circus Circus Hotel & Casino from the moment they step through the hotel's big top tent-themed entrance. In the late '90s, Circus Circus was one of the few hotels on the Strip that welcomed families, which remains a priority today.

With midway games, free circus acts and rides, including the world's only indoor double-looping, double-corkscrew coaster, Circus Circus encourages families to play just as much as it encourages adults to try and win big at the casino.

On the property, there are multiple restaurants to choose from, including quick-dining spots your kids will probably recognize, like Krispy Kreme and Dairy Queen, as well as a buffet with something for everyone. The hotel's pool complex has a 50-foot waterslide tower with multiple slides, a splash pad for younger kids and two large pools.

To avoid the casino crowd, book a room in the West Tower or the Skyrise Tower. Both have rooms with one king bed or two queen beds. For an additional fee of $25 each, you can request a crib or minifridge for your room.

Rates at Circus Circus Hotel & Casino for a family of four start at $25 per night, plus taxes and fees.

The New York-New York Hotel & Casino brings all the excitement of the Big Apple to the Las Vegas Strip. The exterior is a replica of the New York City skyline, complete with a torch-bearing Statue of Liberty. The hotel even has its own yellow taxi ride, though this yellow taxi is actually a roller coaster that loops around the hotel's exterior.

The aptly named Big Apple Coaster ($19 per person) is the highlight of the hotel's Big Apple Arcade, where you can also play Skee-Ball, air hockey and video games. You can also soak up the sun at the hotel pool, visit the pop-up Hello Kitty Cafe, stroll by the restaurants at an indoor replica of Greenwich Village and more.

Guest rooms have an industrial style and bold colors that lend a New York flair, and rooms with views of the Strip are available.

Kids will feel like true royalty when they step across the drawbridge and into the sprawling medieval castle that is the Excalibur Hotel & Casino. The royal theming continues inside the hotel with suits of armor, stained glass windows, coat of arms decorative touches in the guest rooms and a "Tournament of Kings" jousting and dinner show (tickets start at $42 per person).

The hotel also has a dungeon-themed arcade with video games, midway games and fun prizes and a large pool area with four pools, three Jacuzzis, waterfalls and a winding waterslide. You can dine by the pool or at one of the hotel's many restaurants.

If you choose a guest room in the Royal Tower, you'll be treated to views of the castle's colorful turrets outside your window.

Rates at the Excalibur Hotel & Casino for a family of four start at $95 per night, plus taxes and fees.

The Bellagio Resort & Casino is one of the best hotels in Las Vegas. This "something for everyone" resort has just under 4,000 guest rooms in two large towers, some with views of the Bellagio's iconic fountain show. The majestic fountains outside the hotel shoot as high as 460 feet into the air during daily shows set to music.

The Bellagio is also home to one of Cirque du Soleil's most unusual shows, "O," which features a large 16-foot-deep pool where performers dive, dance on floating platforms and perform aquatic acrobatic feats.

You can also pay a visit to the 14,000-square-foot themed botanical garden, which is updated seasonally, and the Mediterranean-themed pool area.

Rooms at this upscale Las Vegas hotel embrace a calming water theme that offers a welcome contrast to the excitement outside your room.

Rates at the Bellagio Resort & Casino for a family of four start at $261 per night, plus taxes and fees.

The resort is home to more than 40 dining outlets with cuisine from across the globe, a theater that hosts big-name musical acts and a 5 1/2-acre pool complex with multiple pools and Jacuzzis, including a shallow splash pool for children. One pool is reserved exclusively for guests of Crockfords.

As the resort is part of the Hilton family, guests can earn or redeem Hilton Honors points at all three Resorts World hotels and enjoy the perks of elite status .

With nearly 5,000 guest rooms across 6.6 acres, the MGM Grand is the largest stand-alone hotel in the U.S. That means there are endless opportunities for family fun without ever leaving the hotel, though when you do leave, there are convenient walkways and a monorail station to help you easily get around town.

Families can watch the popular Jabbawockeez dance troupe perform on select nights, visit a "Hunger Games" exhibition and watch world-class magician David Copperfield at the hotel's event space (all experiences require a ticket purchase), or enjoy the pools and lazy river at the MGM Grand's pool complex.

In addition to sit-down dining, there is a large food court with options like Nathan's hot dogs and Haagen-Dazs ice cream.

Guest rooms range from standard-yet-stylish rooms to VIP Skylofts with 24/7 butler service, floor-to-ceiling views of the Strip and spacious accommodations.

Rates at the MGM Grand for a family of four start at $130 per night, plus taxes and fees.

You don't have to stay on the Strip to experience the best attractions in Las Vegas . The Tahiti Village Resort & Spa is less than 2 miles from Las Vegas' most popular casino resorts and offers a complimentary shuttle to make it easy to get back and forth.

Of course, the all-suite hotel has a lengthy list of its own activities and amenities, including tiki-themed dining, a summertime luau, an arcade and a pool area with a lazy river and a sandy beach.

Accommodations have kitchens, large living areas and one or two bedrooms that sleep up to eight guests. Some rooms also have private outdoor balconies and Jacuzzi tubs.

The Hilton Vacation Club Cancun Resort Las Vegas is far enough off the Strip to offer a respite from the lights and sounds of the city but close enough to reach the action in about 10 minutes.

The resort has two pools with four waterslides and a poolside bar and restaurant. At the center of the two pools stands a Mayan-inspired pyramid with a cascading waterfall that conceals a secluded Jacuzzi.

Guest rooms at this all-suite property have either one or two bedrooms and sleep up to six guests. Each room has a full kitchen, two bathrooms and a living area. The deluxe pool-view suites also have a two-person Jacuzzi on the balcony.

Rates at Hilton Vacation Club Cancun Resort Las Vegas for a family of four start at $146 per night, plus taxes and fees.

The Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas is a luxury retreat on the five upper floors of Mandalay Bay. Guests of the Four Seasons have access to the restaurants and other amenities at Mandalay Bay, but the hotel also has its own full-service spa, fine dining restaurant, cocktail bars and exclusive pool area. What you won't find is a casino, making it a great choice for families who aren't visiting Vegas for slot machines and table games.

Through the hotel's much-loved Family for All Seasons program, kids receive a special welcome amenity and complimentary use of games and books. Children's toiletries, childproofing items, cribs, kids menus and complimentary baby items are also available.

Standard rooms, studios and suites are available, each with art deco-inspired furnishings and expansive views of the city below.

Eligible American Express cardholders can book through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts for additional perks like daily breakfast for two, a $100 spa or dining credit and guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout.

modern family vegas trip

Before diving into more details, let’s first discuss why a Las Vegas trip can prove to be a perfect family destination. Las Vegas is a major resort city in the country and is known for its casinos, gambling, dining, and nightlife.

Located in South Eastern Nevada, the city is the country’s largest economic center. The city is packed with millions of lightbulb marks and the popular Las Vegas strip known as the ‘City Without Clocks.’ You might consider the following reasons before visiting Las Vegas with your Kids:

Affordability

Surprised, aren’t you? You might have always considered Las Vegas a city heavy on wallets. But the good news is the city is more affordable than other popular tourist destinations. It is easy to get there, and the accommodation is cheap too. If you compare the accommodation prices with New York’s, you’ll find a major difference in costs, where New York is more expensive than Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas Strip

The Las Vegas strip is packed with high-end hotels and casinos, but you can have a lot more fun here if you’re with family. There are Bellagio Botanical Gardens, Iconic fountains, the pyramid and sphinx at Luxor, and the shark reef aquarium to keep your family entertained. You can also soak in the sun at the stunning Mandalay Bay beach.

Dozens of Fun Museums

There are lots of fun museums in Las Vegas, which include the Discovery Children’s Museum, Nevada State Museum, The Neon Museum Las Vegas, and the Museum of Selfies Las Vegas. There are more than 30 amazing museums in the city that feature stunning exhibitions and provide a good experience for family visitors. Your kids will love visiting the Las Vegas Natural History Museum, where they will explore the prehistoric era, dinosaurs, and more.

Stunning Theme Parks

Las Vegas has multiple theme and amusement parks, so we consider it a perfect family vacation destination. The city features Big Apple Coaster, Park MGM, Downtown container park, botanical gardens, Roy’s secret garden, and others. The amusement parks that are the most popular among kids are We ‘n’ Wild Las Vegas, High Roller at The Linq, and VR Adventures.

A Treat for Adrenaline Junkies

If you have thrillseekers in your family, they’ll love being in Las Vegas. Whether it’s the SlotZilla zipline, The Strat Tower Thrill Rides, or the gaming fun in Fremont Street, your mini-dare devils will never have a dull moment here. You can also take your family to the Adventuredome to have fun at the indoor roller coasters and enjoy the arcade games and mini-bowling programs.

Since Las Vegas is located in a desert, the temperature reaches triple digits during the daytime in summer. Thus, summers are unsuitable for visiting the city as most outdoor activities will be affected due to scorching heat. Despite being very hot during the summers, Las Vegas attracts millions of visitors yearly. August is the hottest and cheapest time to visit the city.

The best time to visit Vegas with kids is spring and fall . That is, from March to May and from September to November . These are the months when the city has moderate weather and is not overly crowded. Winter is the most expensive season and is too crowded in December and January. So, March to May and September to November is the best season from the weather and crowd point of view. Besides this, you must consider the days too; you’ll get lower rates between Tuesday and Thursday.

Las Vegas is the largest city in Nevada and is located in the Mojave desert. The Mojave desert is the westernmost desert of America. The weather in Las Vegas is mostly hot and dry across the year. The average high temperature throughout the year is 80F, and the average low is 56F. July is the hottest month, and January is the coldest month. The average daily temperature is 68F which is pleasant throughout the year.

Winters in Las Vegas are mild, but nights are cold. On the other hand, the weather is quite hot in summer. Rainfall is not common, and the average yearly rainfall is 105 millimeters. Rains are more common in winter than in summer, but when it rains in summer, it’s in the form of showers. Summer is from June to August, and Winter is from December to February.

Spring is mostly sunny and a little warm; thus, it’s a perfect time. During this season, days are a bit warm, and nights are a little cold. Spring in Las Vegas is from March to May. The fall season is from September to November, starting as a warm season during September but gradually becoming colder. During November, the nights are cold and pleasant.

modern family vegas trip

So, now that you’ve decided to explore Las Vegas with your family, you must decide on the length of time you must spend there. The perfect time to spend in Las Vegas is 3 to 4 days. However, first-timers must spend at least 6 to 7 days in the city.

To be honest, there is no upper limit to the length of time you’ll spend in Vegas. A perfect weekend in Vegas plan should be to fly to the city on Friday and depart on Sunday night. The following is a perfect one-week itinerary in Las Vegas:

Day 1: High Roller Observation Wheel, LINQ Promenade, Madame Tussauds

Day 2: Grand Canyon Day Trip,  Big Apple Coaster, Marvel Avengers Station

Day 3: Mandalay Bay Aquarium, Children’s Discovery Museum

Day 4: Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, Bellagio Fountains

Day 5: Neon museum, Mojave National Preserve, Hoover Dam

Day 6: The Fremont Street, Death Valley National Park

Day 7: Seven Magic Mountains, Downtown Container Park, Shopping

You might have heard about more adult-focused activities in Las Vegas because that’s what it’s known for. Las Vegas with Kids Travel Tips

  • Las Vegas with kids can get expensive, so make sure to take advantage of the many free kid friendly attractions that the city has to offer. Schedule in a free attraction here and there and your day will be packed with fun without spending too much.
  • Avoid the busiest times of the year which include holidays and major events – conventions (International CES, SEMA Show, NAB Show, Rodeo Finals) – that pack the strip and drive up the prices.
  • If you vacation during the hottest times of the year in Las Vegas, make sure to drink plenty of water, avoid too many outdoor activities on the same day and plan some family time at a kid friendly pool. See our list of the Best Family Pools in Las Vegas .
  • Staying at a resort on the Las Vegas Strip puts your family in the heart of the action, but many hotels outside of the strip might offer more family friendly amenities (bowling, movie theaters and arcades), better room rates, rooms with kitchens or multiple bedrooms, a calmer atmosphere and less traffic.
  • Venture off the Las Vegas Strip once in a while to experience all the family friendly activities, shopping and restaurants that Las Vegas has to offer. Some of our favorite activities and restaurants are not on the strip.
  • With the large number of attractions, sights and entertainment choices available for families, it can be easy to schedule in too much each day. Make sure not to pack your itinerary with so many activities that the kids will be worn out by the afternoon.

We hope our Las Vegas with Kids travel guide and travel tips helps you plan a perfect getaway for you and the kids. As you can see there is plenty to see and do in Las Vegas, so check back here as we will keep all our family friendly lists up to date with all that Vegas has to offer. I visited Vegas in January 2014 for 10 days with my husband and two children 16 and 14 at the time. We stayed at the MGM and found this a beautiful and very convenient place to stay on the strip with everything in reach. We will be visiting Vegas again in September 2017 but this time with another couple who have children. So there will be a 20 year old, 18, 15 and 11 year old travelling with us. We would like to try another hotel to sample something different but are unsure whether the MGM is the better choice or is there something else we can try that is just as nice.

If you want to stay on the Las Vegas Strip at a hotel that is kid friendly and in a great location, I would recommend staying at the Mirage Hotel and Casino. The Mirage has a beautiful pool that is open and heated all year long, a 20,000-gallon saltwater aquarium, a beautiful indoor atrium, the amazing volcano eruptions, and The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil show. In addition to all the Mirage has to offer on its property, its great location puts you in walking distance to attractions like the Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden & Dolphin Habitat, the Fashion Show Mall, the Venetian gondola rides, Madame Tussauds, the High Roller observation wheel, the Forum Shops at Caesars and the Flamingo Hotel’s Wildlife Habitat. Dining in the area is plentiful as well and you could walk to some great family restaurants like the Bacchanal Buffet, Bouchon, Hash House A Go Go and Grimaldi’s Pizzeria among many others. I hope this helps and feel free to ask any other questions.

What hotel do you recommend for a stay in Las Vegas in late March for about 4 nights with children age 10 and 16?

If you are okay with being off the strip, I would go with the Tahiti Village Resort or the South Point Hotel. Tahiti Village is closer to the strip, has one and two bedroom options and has fantastic pools. The South Point is further away from the strip, but offers a bowling center, an arcade, a 16 screen movie complex and a nice kid friendly pool.

If you want to stay on the Las Vegas Strip and be in the heart of the action, The Mirage is a great choice. The hotel is beautiful and has a volcano show out front, a saltwater aquarium, a rainforest atrium, tropical pools and one of our favorite Cirque du Soleil shows. With so many attractions, restaurants and sights to see close by, the hotel is a good choice for a family that wants to wander around Las Vegas.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask any other questions if you need help planning you family vacation.

If we stay at the Tahiti Village, do we need a car to get to the main part of the strip? Is there a quick & easy bus, etc? Also, any other places with condo/bedroom style rooms?

Yes, from Tahiti Village you would need a car or take a bus to get to the main part of the Las Vegas Strip. They do have two buses – The Strip & Downtown Express (SDX) that runs from 9 a.m. to midnight and The Deuce on the Strip that runs 24-hours a day that run from the south part of the strip all the way up to the Fremont Street Experience in Downtown Las Vegas. The Deuce on the Strip has more stops, but won’t get you all the way south near the hotel, so use the Strip & Downtown Express (SDX). The Deuce bus is better once you get on the strip and want to jump around as it makes more stops than the SDX bus. There will be walk of about 10 minutes from your hotel to the bus stop. You can get a 24 hour bus pass for $8. If you want to rent a car, please keep in mind that the hotels on the strip are now charging for parking, which makes it very difficult to hop around the strip without paying a big price or walking everywhere. As far as other places with condo/bedroom style rooms, the Wyndham Grand Desert has 1 and 2 bedroom rooms and is only a 15 minute walk from the strip. Hope this helps.

Do Hotels allow you to use their pool even though your not a guest? My child is 20 months.

Most of the hotels do not allow you to use their pool if you are not a guest of the hotel. A few places sell pool party passes, but that is not what you would be looking for with kids.

What would be an appropriate hotel for kids bw the ages of 10-15 during the pool party season. Our kids have a cheer competition in May where we have been told that that it’s when the pool parties begin.

If you are okay with staying off the Las Vegas Strip, I would recommend Tahiti Village Resort. It has one of the best kid friendly pools in all of Vegas, is away from all of the partying, is a quick drive to the strip and the rooms are like small apartments with kitchenette/kitchens.

We are thinking of going to Vegas next April (2018). Do you think Vegas is okay for a 7 year old? I have read that there is plenty to do but some people have suggested walking down the strip is not ideal for young children. Also, which hotel would you recommend? I have read that the Mandalay Bay is a good option for kids but I see you have suggested The Mirage to a few people. Thanks.

I do think Las Vegas is okay for a family with a 7 year old, but it all depends on when and where you go during your visit. Walking along the Strip or Fremont Street during the day as opposed to the night is a different experience all together – with the morning to early evening being the most appropriate times to walk the along the Strip. There are spots along the Strip that should not be missed, but most of the Strip is now just to a walkway to get from point A to point B and you wouldn’t want to walk the long strip with younger kids anyway. Pick out the spots of interest that you want to visit along the Las Vegas Strip and plan visits to a few that are in close proximity to each other. Most families with younger kids are usually out and about during the day anyway and that is the best time to go out and explore Vegas with kids. There are plenty of family friendly activities off the strip as well, so take a look at our Ultimate Las Vegas Bucket List that has activities listed by location. Some family activities that I think would be fun to do with younger kids: Hike and Climb At Red Rock Canyon, Hiking In The Valley Of Fire, Wet ‘n’ Wild Las Vegas, Indoor Skydiving, Pinball Hall of Fame, Aquariums (Silverton and Mandalay Bay), Adventuredome theme park, The Bellagio Conservatory, Container Park’s Treehouse Playground and see a family friendly Las Vegas Show .

As far as hotels go, it depends on your wants and needs for lodging. Mandalay Bay and The Mirage are both great hotels to stay at and both have family friendly pools and activities. If you want to be at the heart of the Strip, I would go with the Mirage and if you like a little less activity, Mandalay Bay is at the bottom of the strip and gives you quicker access to off-strip activities. If you are open to staying off the strip, there are a few great family friendly hotels to stay at that will give you a bit more room and amenities. We love the Tahiti Village Resort because of its one and two bedroom rooms with kitchens, its amazing pools and its location that is a short drive to the strip. I hope that helps. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions or need help planning out your Las Vegas vacation.

I saw on TV that families could view a rehearsal of Mystere for free for children. Now I cannot find anything about this. We are going to the strip with two granddaughters that would love this, but are too young for the entire show (which we did last year with their older sisters). Can you provide any information on this? Thank you.

Hi! We’re planning on taking our 4 kids ages 3-6-9-11 Not sure if we should book at MGM OR MANDALAY BAY What do you recommend and what’s your best advice for traveling with so many children? THANKYOU!!!!!!

Staying at the MGM will have you walking distance to a couple of kid friendly activities and restaurants on the Strip. Mandalay Bay is on the south end of the Strip with fewer things within walking distance, but does have a slight advantage when staying put in the hotel. Both resorts have great family friendly pools , but we think Mandalay Bay might get the nod there as well. If hoping in a car or taxi to explore Las Vegas is not a big deal, we think Mandalay Bay might be a better fit for your family.

Taking into account the kids ages, here are a few things we recommend seeing and doing when in town with your kids: Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, Conservatory & Botanical Gardens at the Bellagio, Mirage Hotel’s Volcano Show, Aquarium and Atrium, the Wildlife Habitat at the Flamingo Hotel, Circus Acts and Carnival Midway at Circus Circus, the Bellagio’s fountain show, Adventuredome theme park at Circus Circus, Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage hotel, Container Park’s Treehouse Playground, Silverton Hotel’s Aquarium, get a family picture at the Las Vegas Welcome Sign and Wet ‘n’ Wild water park. These family activities in Las Vegas were pulled from our Things to Do with Kids in Las Vegas article.

Here are some tips for visiting Las Vegas with the kids: With all of the free kid friendly activities the city offers, families can fill up their itinerary for very little out of pocket expenses – so take advantage of those as they are not only free but some of the best fun that can be had in Vegas for family. Make sure to space out your activities so that you don’t exhaust the kids too quickly. Plan your activities in close proximity to each other so you are not running all around town on the same day. There is a lot of fun off the Las Vegas Strip as well.

Yes, Mystère by Cirque du Soleil does offer a free viewing of a 30 minute rehearsal that is open to all ages. It currently takes place on Mondays at 4:00 p.m. at the Mystere Theatre in the Treasure Island Hotel.

I’m heading to Vegas this July with my 12yr old son for a basketball tournament at the convention center. It’s during the week and his first time in Vegas. Any recommendations on where to stay. Looking for pool, shows, access to convention by tram or taxi

Taking in your need to get to the convention center by tram, I would recommend staying at the Mirage or Bellagio resorts. They are both across the street from the Las Vegas Monorail stops that go to the Las Vegas Convention Center, are family friendly hotels and have great locations on the Strip.

Do any of the hotels have game systems like PS4 or XBox in the rooms for kids to use?

I don’t believe that any of the hotel rooms have these gaming consoles in the rooms. The Aria does however have a Game Room featuring gaming stations that are equipped with 50” televisions, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with various games.
