LUXURY TENTED LODGE NEAR KRUGER PARK

About the lodge.

Ideally situated in the Mpumalanga Lowveld region of South Africa, the Ndhula Lodge is giving incredible views over the mountains, the bushveld and the surrounding valleys. This stunning view, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, as well as a wonderful array of “plains” game species that graze close by give this place a “Serengeti” type ambience.

The name “Ndhula” is the short and modified form of Indlulamithi, which means “Giraffe” in the local Zulu language. When the founder of the Lodge first visited this property, a bunch of Giraffes crossed their way. That was the sign to name the Lodge after this graceful animal.

NEW ADDITION: Our own Spa! Get spoilt in a peaceful surrounding.

THE PERFECT LOCATION

Ndhula is situated between the small artistic town of White River (10 minutes drive to the north), and the larger city of Nelspruit/Mbombela (30 minutes drive to the south). You can reach the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) within a 10 minutes drive, and it takes 4 hours from OR Tambo International Airport to get to the Lodge. The “Numbi” Kruger Park entrance is just a 50 minutes drive away. This unique location is perfect to relax and to explore some of Southern Africa’s most precious natural attractions like the world-renowned Kruger National Park, the Blyde River Canyon and the scenic Panorama Route.

Mpumalanga Game Lodges & Bush Camps

Mpumalanga boasts an incredible terrain that includes parts of the Kruger National Park and the Drakensberg Mountain Range, as well as afro-montane forests and the Lebombo Mountains. This alone lends it a natural splendour and profusion that is quite unrivalled.

The game lodges, safari lodges, bush camps, and suites of the local game reserves provide the ideal comfort from which to revel in the tranquillity and see the beauty all around. These lodges are comfortable, inviting and many have the added bonus of being luxurious too. From here, safaris and game drives are conducted through the reserves, unveiling the fauna and flora in all of their loveliness. Many reserves are home to the Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino), as well as an array of antelope and birds, insects and rodents. Mpumalanga is a hotspot for nature-lovers and outdoorsy folk that want to experience South Africa in a very real, memorable way.

About our home in Mjejane Private Nature Reserve

Mjejane Private Nature Reserve is a slice of heaven. The reserve is situated on the boundaries of the legendary Kruger National Park, forming a part of the Greater Kruger, a specific concession area that is made up of various pieces of land which have, over the years, become a part of the Kruger conservation effort. This specific area is especially beautiful not only because it is a more exclusive area of the park, but also because a part of the Crocodile River runs through it. Game lodges of all kinds have been built along the banks of the river, including our own, which has become one of the most sought after accommodation facilities given its location and its stylish comfort. The location of the Mjejane Game Reserve makes it a game viewing paradise. Because it is so close to the Crocodile River, guests are treated to the most bountiful wildlife sightings. Within the thick riverine forest, a habitat which grows abundantly along the river banks, bird and animal life flourish. This habitat is home to green pigeons, which flutter amongst the leafy trees in search of wild fruits, and purple-crested louries, whose calls are soothing and inviting. In the midday heat, when the Fish Eagles, which nest in the trees, take flight they unleash a cacophony of calls, which are so distinctly African. But this part of the Greater Kruger is not just a wonderful place for birding. Guests who choose to make Mjejane their holiday destination of choice, can also look forward to spotting a variety of wildlife. On the banks of the Crocodile River, the early mornings and late evenings are the perfect time for a safari, even if your safari is from the lodge stoep. Leopards and elephants frequent the area and they are often spotted wondering the banks in search of water. The grunting sounds of hippo pods can also often be heard from the lodge. The river attracts a wide variety of plains game, such as antelope, wildebeest and buffalo. And wherever these animals roam, predators are never too far behind. We chose to make our home here because we have a deep connection to this beautiful place. We have found a purpose here, and it is to welcome our guests to this most amazing piece of South Africa. Our lodge has been built to accommodate only a select number of guests at a time, ensuring utter peace and privacy, away from tourist crowds. This exclusivity also means that wildlife sightings are experiences unique to those who see them. You don’t have to share the sighting with a horde of tourists, which, while it’s not necessarily a bad thing to have others around you, means you can savour the moment and really take in the magic.

A Word about the Mjejane

Africans hold a special place in their hearts for the wilderness and the wildlife that characterise our home. We all feel a special connection to this place and a definite desire to preserve every part of it. This wide stretch of land was set aside by Chief Lugedlane with the intention of preserving the land and its wildlife for future generations to enjoy. His vision was to create an inheritance in a way that is so distinctly African. Our inheritance is the wildlife that we are here to look after and it is because of the visions of people like Chief Lugedlane that Africa’s wildlife lives on, untouched, in the very habitat that once belonged to their ancestors. The land still belongs to the Mjejane community, and those who have built their self-catering game lodges here understand the importance of honouring the commitment to preserving the land.

Wildlife of the Mjejane Private Nature Reserve

Since the Mjejane Private Nature Reserve is situated on the Southern Boundary of the Kruger National Park, those who stay here can spot just about every animal the area has to offer. The Southern Kruger is famous for its rich wildlife population and guests can see all of the Big 5 as well as all sorts of other interesting animals. Wildlife migrate throughout the year. Before the areas around the Kruger became a part of the park, wildlife were stopped by the fences which meant that their natural migratory patterns were completely changed. In some cases, this halt resulted in wildlife having to change feeding habits as well as certain other natural instincts that once filled with the urge to make the move. With the fences coming down, and more land being incorporated into the Kruger area, wildlife could once more move freely, according to their ancient patterns. This movement is equally beneficial for those visiting the Mjejane, as it gives guests a unique view of how the wildlife move. The animals that you will see while staying at Mjejane Private Nature Reserve are not just those that migrate. The reserve is full of all sorts of wildlife as well as a colourful array of some of the most spectacular birds. Given the size of the nature reserve, the animals you can see while visiting the Mjejane can include just about every type that this part of the world is well known for.

The Big 5 of the Mjejane

With so many hunters flocking to Africa, it didn’t take long for the white rhino population in the Lowveld to be hunted to extinction. In 1961, 337 rhinos were reintroduced to the area and since then the populations have more or less flourished, although the ever present danger of poachers has resulted in the Kruger and surrounding nature reserves having to improve their security efforts. The rhino of Mjejane have crossed the river to make a home for themselves in the reserve. The reserve is also home to a few black rhino, although they are rather shy.

Some guests staying at Jacana River Lodge have had the luck of spotting elephants from the lodge swimming pool, while others will normally see elephants while out on a safari. Before the Mjejane was a part of the Kruger National Park, it was primarily used as agricultural land, which means the elephant herds not only have a reliable food source, but they also have a large area of land to spread out across. When the elephants moved in, the land took a bit of a beating, with trees and other vegetation destroyed, but the land has since recovered. The elephants of the Mjejane live in matriarchal societies and the herds are often spotted at the Crocodile River, where they can each drink up to 17 litres of water upon each visit.

Like the other grazing animals seeking greener pastures, the Mjejane buffalo herds crossed into the game reserve in search of food and territory. They have proven to be a valuable asset to the conservation area as they keep the grasslands maintained which in turn opens the area to smaller antelope. The buffalos live in large herds, but guests do often see the lone buffalo, generally an older male now separated from the herd and living a bachelor lifestyle. Buffalo have always had a bit of a reputation for being aggressive, especially when feeling threatened, and guests are encouraged to enjoy any buffalo sighting from a safe distance.

The mighty Kings and Queens of the Kruger savannah have also made their way into Mjejane, lured by the appealing scent of prey. Working in prides, the lions are often spotted taking down prey along the Crocodile River, and they are also occasionally spotted with their cubs, which generally appear between February and April each year. Spotting a lion while in the Mjejane is an unbelievable experience as they can come quite close to the lodge, giving guests a once in a lifetime sighting.

The leopard is at the top of many a wildlife sighting list, and yet for many guests it remains an elusive creature. With the thick riverine forest, a natural habitat for leopards, and the fact that the reserve is a lot smaller than the Kruger, guests visiting the Mjejane have a better opportunity to spot these quiet big cats. The best way to see a leopard is by spending some time close to the Crocodile River, where leopard populations are impressively big.

Accommodation in the Mjejane Private Nature Reserve

The Mjejane is a magical place and it has the power of weaving its way into the hearts and minds of those who visit. With its more exclusive appeal, the Mjejane is home to some of the most luxurious and private self-catering game lodges in Mpumalanga . Guests looking for a quiet escape, and who don’t want to visit a tourist packed place like the Kruger National, will find solace right here, in the peaceful African bush. Guests who are staying at any of the self-catering game lodges wake up to the sounds of elephants and other wildlife close to their bedroom windows and they fall asleep listening to the thrilling roar of lions, the cackling of hyenas and the haunting calls of owls, all of whom stay close to the reserve’s various accommodation facilities. And Jacana is no exception. At our peaceful lodge, guests will be staying close to nature, so close in fact that they will feel as though they are once again a part of the natural cycle. Our self-catering accommodation in the Mjejane Private Game Reserve is the perfect place for a family getaway and with our full-time domestic worker, Esther, available to help clean up, you can sit back and fully enjoy a well-deserved break away from your day to day life. The Jacana River Lodge accommodates a maximum of 10 guests at a time, and you can book your stay for a full week, or just for a weekend. Given the exclusivity of the lodge, you will never have to worry about sharing your space with strangers or having your African bushveld break spoiled by unexpected loud music or neighbours.

What Makes Jacana one of the Best Game Lodges in Mpumalanga?

For anyone planning a holiday at a game reserve in Mpumalanga, being greeted with an array of stunning accommodation options can make the choice of game lodge a little more daunting than it should need to be.

Mpumalanga is a picturesque place, and while it is possibly best known for its lush rolling green landscapes and its incredible mountains, there is another side of the province that has possibly made it even more popular. And that is the various game reserves that have over the years come to dominate a wide part of the province.

Some game reserves in Mpumalanga are completely private establishments, while others have grown onto the Kruger National Park, becoming a small part of this legendary conservation park, while still holding onto some of its independence. These parks, with their shared borders, are a popular place to stay as the wildlife from the Kruger is able to move freely between the two parks. This means there is much more to see, but without the ever present Kruger crowds.

Over the years, Jacana River Lodge has become one of the best game lodges in Mpumalanga, and for a variety of reasons. Our lodge, situated on the banks of the Crocodile River, it is secluded, big enough for the whole family, and more than capable of meeting your luxury expectations, even though it is self-catered.

If you’ve not yet made your choice for a place to stay during your Mpumalanga holiday, there are many reasons why Jacana is one of the best game lodges in Mpumalanga, and one lodge that should make your list.

1. Jacana is an affordable place to stay

Considering the size of the lodge and its ability to sleep a big family, and also taking into consideration the fact that the lodge is certainly one of the higher end accommodation options, when you are thinking about Jacana River Lodge as your preferred place to stay, you can budget for it.

2. Jacana is the perfect lodge for a lengthy safari

When you are booking our lodge for your holiday, especially if you are sharing the expenses, you can afford to extend your time in the game reserve, and have a much longer holiday. Ideally, the general advice for a Mjejane holiday is to spend far more than 2 days in the game reserve. The more time you spend in the reserve, the more chance you will have of seeing all sorts of wildlife that you might have otherwise missed had you not been staying in the area little longer.

Given the fact that Jacana is built in the midst of a bustling wildlife habitat, you don’t even have to travel too far from the lodge in order to see all sorts of animals. This makes us one of the best places to stay, as you won’t often find other lodges that can bring you this close to nature.

3. Jacana has a personality

Our guests are always entranced by our lodge when they first arrive. From the absolutely exquisite views of the Crocodile River that can be enjoyed from the lodge, to open plan living areas that embody that full African aesthetic, guests can’t help but feel as though they have left behind their city life for something completely otherworldly.

Jacana has been built for that holiday vibe that so many guests seek from their stay with us. When you stay at our lodge, you will understand why we are considered one of the best game lodges in Mpumalanga.

4. Jacana offers the best game viewing

Jacana is home to the Big 5 and so much more. When you come to our lodge for a holiday, you can look forward to the best game viewing the areas has to offer. Whether you head out on a self-drive safari or if you plan to just lay on the deck and watch the wildlife go by, you are certain to have all sorts of animals cross your path.

5. Jacana offers exclusivity

If you are looking to escape the crowds and have a completely private stay, then Jacana is the place to be because here you will find exclusivity. You won’t bump into random guests at the lodge, because you and your family will be the only ones here throughout your stay.

Buffelshoek Tented Camp

9.3 Superb 458 reviews

Great lodge in the middle of Manyeleti game reserve. Not a luxury accomodation, but very cozy and it has everything you need. The camp has no fences, so wild animals might stroll around, which makes it extra special. Our guide for the game drives was amazing and funny. We saw 4 of the Big 5 even though the weather was quite bad. The jeep has no roof, which is an advantage compared to other lodges, when it comes to game sighting and safari feeling. The food was delicious too. To sum it up, great camp!

10 Best Mpumalanga Lodges with waterfalls

  • Post author: Louis
  • Post published: 13th June 2023
  • Post category: Schoemanskloof

The landscape, flora, and fauna will all be noticeably different as you travel from your Johannesburg hotel to the spectacular Mpumalanga province. From Gauteng, the landscape changes from brick to grass, and then to a cascade of green leaves. This impressive vista is just as astonishing as you arrive from another country.

The pure air and verdant mountains here have so much to offer, and this water-rich region of South Africa is particularly famous for its cascading waterfalls. In this post, we explore the 1 0 best Mpumalanga lodges that feature waterfalls for their guests to enjoy a truly unique African experience.

1. Wolwekrans Eco Lodge

wolwekrans eco lodge - Schoemanskloof - home

Recently chosen as one of South Africa’s top 16 mountain retreats, and located on the spectacular Schoemanskloof escarpment, Wolwekrans has awe-inspiring 240-degree panoramic views of the Lowveld valley and the Drakensberg mountains, earning it the nickname “Jewel of Mpumalanga.”

Wolwekrans is a beautiful guest farm covering an area of 120 acres. This is the ideal vacation for couples and families. A private boma, deck, and space are included with each chalet. Wolwekrans was designed with privacy in mind.

Wolwekrans has exciting and scenic hiking trails, one of which leads to a cascading waterfall on the property.

The Wolwekrans Eco Lodge is 100% off the grid, ensconced by high mountains with majestic views. Accommodation consists of stunning chalets with 240 degree panoramic views of the terrain that is rich with unfenced roaming wild game.

On-site activities also include heavenly stargazing, MTB rugged cycling, horse riding, bird watching, and more.

The N4 Schoemanskloof route winds through stunning natural woods and subtropical scenery, complete with flowing waterfalls. Most visitors make a point of stopping at the Joubert & Sons farm booth to stock up on the region’s world-famous citrus and avocados. After that, they will go on to their ultimate destination.

A wide variety of plants, trees, and orchids call this environment home. On the grassy slopes of the mountains, you can find the endangered cycads Encephalartos humilus and Laevifolius. The kloof is a haven for birdwatchers due to the abundance of birdlife there.

The crowned eagle, a common sight and sound, is a vervet monkey predator. Purple-crested Loeries and narina trogons can also be spotted in the region. Red and common duiker, steenbok, mountain reedbuck, and bushbuck are just few of the fascinating small game species that continue to inhabit this region.

2. Mogodi Lodge

With a breath-taking panorama of the Mpumalanga Lowveld, Mogodi Lodge is ideally located just fifty metres from the Graskop Gorge Falls. This presents an excellent spot from which to take in the area’s stunning scenery.

From Mogodi Lodge, guests can explore the surrounding forest on foot, climb a berg, or take a drive along the unforgettable Panorama Route.

The Malaria-free area at Mogodi Lodge is about 1 km from Graskop, and it’s only 49 kilometres from the Kruger National Park.

Mogodi Lodge provides both hotel rooms that are available on a bed and breakfast basis and self-catering chalets for individuals who prefer to prepare their own meals.

Not only does this lodge have a restaurant, pool, and wedding chapel, but it also features the world-famous “Big Swing” above the canyon.

3. Thaba Tsweni Lodge and Safaris

This relaxed lodge is set on a green property in a rural setting, just a mile from R532 and an 11-minute walk from Berlin Falls and a 5-kilometer drive from Lisbon Falls.

The Drakensberg Mountains and the Blyde River Canyon are home to Thaba Tsweni, which translates to “Mountain of the Baboon” in Bapedi.

There are just six luxury self-catering chalets at Thaba Tsweni Lodge, so guests may relax in the quiet of the surrounding mountains.

If you give advance notice, their team can set up full South African breakfasts in their dining room and/or meals in the restaurant next to the Lodge.

Graskop, the nearest town to the lodge, also has a great selection of restaurants. The Blyde River Canyon environment is tranquil, and the chalets may accommodate two, four, or six people.

The South African National Monument Berlin Waterfalls is within walking distance of Thaba Tsweni Lodge, as is the adjacent Garden Shed Restaurant.

4. The Elements Guesthouse

The Elements provides rooms in Graskop with a garden, free WiFi, and free private parking, within 16.1 kilometres of Mac-Mac Falls and 29 kilometres of Sabi Country Club.

Guests will be about 38.6 kilometres from the Sabi River and 40.2 kilometres from the Kruger Park Lodge Golf Club when staying at this location. There is a barbecue and a view of the garden from the guesthouse.

The inn’s guest rooms all provide seating areas. There’s a fridge and an electric tea kettle in each room, and some of them even have kitchenettes. All rooms at The Elements come with towels and sheets.

The hotel serves a complimentary continental breakfast to its guests. Views of cliffs and lush greenery may be seen from Mac Mac Falls, which is located on the Sabi Waterfalls Route.

There are two waterfalls, each plunging roughly 70 metres into a gorge. Several rock pools at the base of the waterfall make for a refreshing swim. BBQ grills and picnic tables are available as well.

5. Two Falls View

It takes about 5 minutes to travel to the heart of Sabi from where Two Falls View is located. There are mountain vistas and two waterfalls across the valley from the property.

Two Falls View’s spacious apartments provide full kitchens, private outside space (balcony or patio), and ensuite bathrooms with showers. A garden and grills are available to guests at Two Falls View. Parking is free of charge at the venue.

The Two Falls View guesthouse is close to Lone Creek Falls, also a National Monument due to its stunning beauty, with a drop of 68 metres, which is less than Mac Mac Falls’ 73 metres.

It’s a short trek into the forest and another 200 metres to reach this waterfall, despite the fact that it’s bordered on all sides by native woodland. Picnic tables can be found in the area.

6. Merry Pebbles Resort

Sabie Falls and the Komatiland Forestry Museum are both within easy driving distance of Merry Pebbles Resort & Caravan Park, which is situated on a river in Sabi.

The 70-meter plunge of Bridal Veil Falls is comparable to that of Mac Mac Falls. The hike is not long, but the landscape along the way is magnificent.

The Berlin Falls are within driving distance of Zur Alten Mine Guest Farm B&B, which offers spacious, self-catering accommodations surrounded by natural beauty.

The Berlin Falls thunder down crimson cliffs and into a jade-green pool below. The greenish hue of the waterfall, caused by the red cliffs, is a favourite subject for photographers.

The waterfall has an 80-meter plunge and is located near other tourist hotspots including Kruger National Park and Blyde River Canyon.

The waterfall was given its name by European gold prospectors who flocked to South Africa during the gold rush and renamed several of the local waterfalls after their hometowns back in Europe.

8. Mackers Riverbend Cottages

The Lisbon Falls are a worthwhile 20-kilometer journey from Mackers Riverbend Cottages. There are cottages and glamping sites to choose from. Cottages are equipped with nothing that would distract guests from fully disconnecting, thus there is no television, air conditioning, or swimming pool.

I went on a budget and a luxury safari in Africa. Here's how they compare — and the one thing you really need to look for when booking.

  • I have been on two glamping safari trips in Africa on two very different budgets.
  • My all-inclusive stay was great but my cheaper glamping experience was fine, too.
  • Private game reserves are actually the most important thing to splurge on, not accommodations.

I've been on two African safari trips . Both involved glamping but on completely different budgets.

My first more affordable trip, a lodge in South Africa with separate safari excursions, cost me about $1,100. My second, an all-inclusive lodge in Tanzania, cost me about $4,000 after a 50% off deal.

Here's how the two compare and what I think you should look for before you plan an African safari .

The first time I went on a safari, I went to Kruger National Park in South Africa. My affordable safari experience was at Jackalberry Ridge, where some tents cost $80 a night.

The first time I went on a safari, I went to Kruger National Park in South Africa. I didn't book a tour package, instead opting to stay at affordable lodging and book safari day trips to the park.

I stayed five nights near Kruger and one night in Johannesburg before my flight home. I spent around $1,100 for lodging, safari tours, a rental car, and food (not including flights).

After landing in Johannesburg, I rented a car ($130 for five days) to drive to my lodging in Marloth Park, a town bordering the edge of Kruger National Park.

I was staying at Jackalberry Ridge , a self-catering accommodation with no on-site restaurant, no room service, and limited housekeeping.

The one-bedroom tents at Jackalberry Ridge go for as low as $80 a night, and two-bedroom tents go for $135.

When I checked in late, there was no one at the reception desk — just an envelope with my name on it containing my keys and a map.

I had booked a two-bedroom unit (two tents), but my friend couldn't come at the last minute. Since I couldn't change the reservation, I still stayed in the two-bedroom unit and my friend paid her share.

The campsite came with a small pool to dip in, but it was covered as the weather was pretty cold.

Each unit had a private bathroom and kitchen in a building separate from the tents, so I needed to leave my tent to use the bathroom at night.

My main tent felt pretty spacious, with a king bed and a living-room area.

This is glamping, so I had access to running water and a flushing toilet. I had hot water, but I found it went from scalding hot to cold in a few seconds.

I ended up taking quick showers and just washing my hair with cold water, which wasn't ideal since it was a little chilly in the morning.

It's also worth noting that Jackalberry Ridge was renovated recently, so the issue I had with hot water may have been fixed now.

The bathroom was standard, with a tub, shower, and toilet.

The kitchen was well-equipped with things like pots, a microwave, and a sink, so I could cook meals or heat up leftovers.

I also had access to a kitchen in the same building as the bathroom.

The kitchen was well-equipped with things like pots, a microwave, and a sink, so I could cook meals or heat up leftovers.

Although I had a rental car and could've done a self-drive safari around Kruger, I didn't trust myself to spot animals while focusing on the roads.

Instead, I signed up for a couple of day safaris and one night safari. The safari tour prices often don't include the park entrance fee (about $25 per person per day), which I paid when I got to the entrance.

My three safari trips and park fees came to around $280.

I signed up for a couple of day safaris and did one at night.

I saw a lot on the safari, including zebras, impalas, kudus, and giraffes. I saw lions and a leopard, although only from afar with binoculars. I even got a glimpse of the elusive rhinoceros.

I also spent one day taking another popular day trip in the area, the Panorama Route. For my next safari trip, I leveled up.

I saw a Travelzoo deal for an all-inclusive safari at Taasa Lodge , a five-star luxury safari in Tanzania.

The deal was $6,000 for two people for a whole week — the lodge is usually $12,950 for two for seven nights. It was still a splurge, but I'd be saving more than 50% on a bucket-list experience.

The package came with seven nights of lodging, two safari activities a day, three daily meals, and drinks.

Still, we spent more than the original advertised price. There are obligatory "daily government park fees" and "daily concession fees" that added about $893 per person to our bill.

We also had to take a regional flight to get to Taasa, which was more expensive than my rental car in South Africa.

To redeem the Travelzoo deal, we had to complete our booking through a specific travel agency.

We ended up opting for an all-inclusive add-on package which includes the $893 fees above, domestic airfares from Arusha to Taasa (which would already cost around $600), and our agency arranging our Tanzanian tourist visa and airport transfers. The add-on also included extra activities at the resort (more on that later).

Overall, we paid $1,715 per person on top of the $3,000 each for the lodge stay.

I hadn't anticipated paying so many extras, but it was nice to have someone take care of the logistics of getting to the resort.

When I arrived at the lodge, the staff greeted me with a glass of juice and a wet towel to refresh myself.

My tent was quite spacious. My tent was luxurious and equipped with a comfortable king bed and a large living room.

When I arrived at the lodge, the staff greeted me with a glass of juice and a wet towel to refresh myself.

My tent was quite spacious. I especially liked that it had a desk and plenty of outlets I could use to charge my electronics. Our bathroom was behind our bed, and I was glad it was inside the tent this time.

We also got a butler who kept track of our schedules and made sure we had what we needed.

The shower's hot water was great and we had double sinks we could get ready at.

Another perk of the lodge is that we could have staff do our laundry every day, which meant we could pack less clothing.

The bathroom felt spacious, with two sinks and a shower.

The shower's hot water was great and we had double sinks we could get ready at.

Another perk of the lodge is that we could have staff do our laundry every day, which meant we could pack less clothing.

We got breakfast at the buffet in the main lodge unless we were going on a morning safari.

Most people ate dinner in the dining room, but we could've requested to have food brought to our tent.

There's a main lodge with a communal living room, dining area, and bar.

We got breakfast at the buffet in the main lodge unless we were going on a morning safari.

Most people ate dinner in the dining room, but we could've requested to have food brought to our tent.

The pool was on the small side, but certainly had great views.

I didn't end up using it as my afternoons were filled with safari, and the mornings and evenings were chilly.

We also passed a small pool next to the main lodge.

The pool was on the small side, but certainly had great views.

I didn't end up using it as my afternoons were filled with safari, and the mornings and evenings were chilly.

Safari breakfasts consisted of hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, doughnuts, bacon and sausage, fruits, and orange juice. Staff also made French-press coffee, which we could spike with cream liqueur.

Our Land Cruiser had a cooler of beers and sodas in the back, too.

On the mornings with an early safari, we had a simple breakfast next to our Land Cruiser.

Taasa is located inside a private game reserve, which means staff can pretty much drive anywhere within it. This was a huge leg up from my day trips in Kruger National Park on my last safari.

Inside national parks like Kruger or Serengeti, you're only allowed to drive on designated roads for safety reasons (both for the tourists and the animals).

But in a private reserve, guides can drive offroad. At the private game reserve, we got pretty close to wildlife.

Plus, the guides communicate with each other when they find something special.

We also left the reserve to spend a couple of days going into Serengeti National Park, as there were things you could only find there instead of within the private reserve.

For example, I'd planned my trip to take place during the Great Migration, and I wanted to see wildebeests crossing the Mara River.

We also went to Serengeti to find rhinoceros and hippopotamus.

We saw a bunch of animals in the private reserve and Serengeti.

The main course was usually some type of Western food, and there was always a vegetarian option.

It would've been nice to be offered more typical Tanzanian dishes, though. For me, part of the fun of traveling is learning about different countries' cuisines.

I also had access to an open bar in the main lodge. Staff could make simple cocktails, and there was lots of beer and wine. The drinks were all included with the price of the stay (except for fancy Champagnes and select wines).

Every dinner at the resort consisted of three courses: soup, an entrée, and a dessert.

On one day of the trip, we had a special bush breakfast. It was one of the extra activities we got with that special add-on package.

Instead of our usual safari breakfast, we had freshly prepared omelets in the wild.

When you're offroading looking for wild animals, you can end up pretty far from a proper toilet.

On most safari days, the car stops (when guides think it's safe), and people go behind the car to do their business.

This was the only time we had this portable toilet while out on a safari. On my budget safari day trips at Kruger, we'd have to wait until we reached a rest-stop facility.

Again, we spent a lot of time watching lions.

After breakfast, we were back in safari mode.

We found a family of lions, and as we were in the private reserve, we were able to stay and watch the cubs play for quite a while.

At Kruger, when lions are spotted, traffic starts backing up on the road as all the safari cruisers stop to look, so you can't stay too long.

Here, we knew no one else would be coming.

On a different morning, our guide got a tip that another car had found a leopard sleeping.

The communication between guides in the private reserve paid off when one spotted a sleeping leopard.

When our group arrived, the leopard was napping on the tree next to his catch. Eventually, it came down, and we got a better look.

Our trip ended with a great happy hour and outdoor dinner.

Other activities that were part of our add-on package included a visit to a Maasai village in Kenya and a special happy hour and barbecue dinner.

And, for our journey home, the travel agency took care of everything, including transfers, until we boarded our international flight.

My big takeaway is that it's really worth paying to be inside a private reserve.
