Portishead (formed in 1991) is an English trip-hop, electronica, and experimental rock group, fronted by the talents of singer Beth Gibbons, hailing from Bristol, England.

Prior to Portishead’s formation in 1991, member Geoff Barrow worked at Coach House studio, where he met the dance-orientated trip-hop group Massive Attack, and rapper Tricky. Barrow subsequently collaborated with Nenah Cherry on her album “Homebrew”, before making a name for himself as a remix producer, mixing tracks for the likes of Primal Scream, Paul Weller and Depeche Mode. In 1991 Barrow met Beth Gibbons and the two began wiring and performing music together, along with jazz guitarist Adrian Utley. In 1994 Barrow and Gibbons acted in and provided the soundtrack to the neo-noir spy film “To Kill a Dead Man”.

The group subsequently signed with Go! Records, who issued Portishead’s debut album “Dummy” in August 1994. Despite Barrow’s and Gibbons’ reluctance to indulge the media, “Dummy” went from strength to strength, earning critical acclaim in the both the UK and the U.S. Spawned the singles “Numb” and “Sour Times”, both of which were accompanied by mysterious music videos, the album won the Mercury Music Prize for Album of the Year over Blur, Suede, Oasis, and Pulp. The record did wonders for the trip-hop genre, already popularised by Massive Attack and Tricky, and is considered one of the greatest trip-hop albums ever made.

After a three year hiatus Portishead returned with a self-titled release in 1997. Once again the album earned overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and charted at No. 21 on the Billboard 200, No. 1 on the New Zealand Album chart, and No. 2 on the UK Album Chart. Featuring a much darker, dirtier and deadlier aesthetic than its predecessor the album spawned the singles “All Mine”, “Over”, and “Only You”. A live album, recorded at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City, was subsequently released in 1997, after which the group collaborated with Tom Jones on the song “Motherless Child”.

The band’s third full-length album, aptly titled “Third”, was released in April 2008. Prior to the release Portishead curated the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in Minehead, England, embarked on a European tour, and headlined Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2008. Upon its release “Third” surprised some fans and critics for being far removed from the Portishead sound they’d come to expect, as Barrow and Gibbons made efforts not to use instruments they had previously. Producing the singles “Machine Gun”, “The Rip”, and “Magic Door”, the album earned enviable reviews, and charted at No. 2 in the UK and No. 7 on the Billboard 200.

Live reviews

Quality over quantity seems to be a reoccurring theme in Portishead's career. They have put out three albums since the 20 plus years they've been together and it seems as though they have played only a handful of shows over the past few years (certainly comparative to other touring acts). However the albums they have released are simply some of the best of their time. Dummy has often been credited as the album that put the trip-hop genre on the map and their 2008 album Third saw Portishead take a whole new direction, trading their downtempo beats and smooth jazz vibes for jarring samples, disjointed drum patterns and overall harsher electronic sounds. Their performances are simply unrivaled. Their Roseland ballroom performance in 1997 is still being discussed today. Taking into account the 11 year gap between their "self titled" album and "Third" it is a wonder how well their songs fit together in a live setting, especially considering the opposing nature of their early and present career. The sweet warm tones which were so ubiquitous on their first album are perfectly preserved for their live offerings. The juxtaposition of their new and old renderings deepen the definitions of the dichotic nature of their music, making their tracks from "Third" seem more static and dislocating.

While their early recordings in a sense have a soothing quality lacking on "Third" there is still an underlying nagging disturbance presiding on each of their albums. This dark affinity is what seems to be enforcing the cohesive nature of their performance. On songs such as "Silence" a teasing synth pulse is backed by, krautrock inspired drumming and jagged guitar strikes. On their current tour you can expect to hear two drummers. One is sometimes equipped with mallets rather than the traditional drumsticks enhancing the primal brood heard on songs like "Nylon Smile". It seems as though all of Portishead's tracks are encapsulated in a foreboding intensity, whether it be sonic as heard on the audio assaulting "Machine Gun" or emotional such as the hauntingly beautiful "The Rip", which seemed as though it was lifted straight from Emily Dickinson's diary. Beth Gibbons vocal performance is reason alone to see the show . Channeling the fractured but devastatingly deep vocalization of Billie Holiday, both her delivery and poetic lyrics fit perfectly with the blend of industrialized electronica and downbeat jazz freak outs.

The brilliant and mysterious Portishead have always been one of my favourite acts, but as an entity that rarely seem to play shows I had never had the chance to see their live spectacle in all its glory –they didn’t perform a single full live show between 1997 and 2007. At Glastonbury 2013, however, I got my chance, when they headlined the Other Stage. Massive Attack may have been credited with founding trip-hop, but fellow Bristolians Portishead took the genre into deeper, more soulful territory, largely thanks to singer Beth Gibbons’ haunting vocals. Their two records in the ‘90s – Dummy (1994) and Portishead (1997) – were landmark releases, but when they surprised the world with their comeback album, Third, in 2008, they had come armed with a body of work that surpassed the high standards they had previously set. Third featured darker, more experimental songs and many of these were showcased at Glastonbury – tracks like ‘Silence’, ‘We Carry On’ and the erratic ‘Machine Gun’ sounded heavy and industrial live, with the band members shrouded in darkness and backed by hypnotic visuals. Naturally, the highlights – especially for someone who never got a chance to see them in the ‘90s – were seeing and hearing their early classics brought to life, such as ‘Glory Box’, ‘Cowboys’ and a beautiful version of ‘Sour Times’. Gibbons’ voice remains one of the most captivating in UK alternative music; if only we got to hear it more often.

Seeing Portishead deliver a triumphant set at last year’s Glastonbury Festival was probably the highlight of the entire weekend; whilst The Rolling Stones were delivering a set of tracks that were predominantly about forty years old, one of the most beguiling bands in Britain were proving that you can do things entirely on your own terms and still reap the rewards. They’ve still only got the three records to their name, but there was more than enough to choose from that night - and besides, Portishead shows are less about the setlist, and more about the cultivation of genuine atmosphere. In fact, there’s something fitting about the fact that they formed so close by to a festival intrinsically tied to mysticism, because the trio are such an oddly complementary outfit that you wouldn’t be surprised if there was something of the supernatural to the way in which they came together. Geoff Barrow is responsible for the group’s trip hop stylings, bringing an obvious urban sensibility to their sound, and Adrian Utley sounds for all the world like a jazz drummer, with an uncommonly broad understanding of groove. Tying everything together, though, is Beth Gibbons’ voice; it’s the most potent tool in the Portishead arsenal, both on record and on stage, and it’s her mere presence that’s vital in making their live shows so arresting.

Portishead is one of the most timeless groups I have ever heard. I could listen to it always! Beth Gibbons seems to smoke, but yet keep that strong beautiful voice. This is truly an amazingly gifted group.

“We haven’t been to Australia for a very long while,” he tells me, “and the idea of playing a big, corporate festival wasn’t really appealing to us, you know what I mean? These days, most things are sponsored by massive phone companies, to the point where you go to a gig and feel like you’re prey. That is pretty much the complete opposite of what festivals are supposed to be about. The Harvest festival, with the lineup it has, and the place it’s going to be held, seems to have a very specific thing in mind, and that suits us. I don’t want to seem elitist,” he continues, with a wry chuckle, “but would you rather be sharing a stage with Bruno Mars or The Flaming Lips? Of course you’d rather it be The Flaming Lips. You want to be playing to people who know what you’re doing.”

For many years, Portishead simply did not like to play live, but the recording of their third album helped turn that around. “On our first two records, we would play something live, then loop it and treat it and put it onto vinyl, then fuck up the vinyl and sample it for the recording,” he says. “After the second album, though, I started to find that whole process mind-numbingly boring – things needed to change.” Finding inspiration in bands like Can and Kraftwerk, the band fundamentally altered their approach for their third album, leading to a sound less intricate and vastly more immediate. “The music became about tuning and timing,” he tells me. “On our first two records, we were exploring blues through the lens of European soundtrack music, but Third was embedded in psychedelic music and Krautrock.”

Like a good many of the group’s Australian fans, Harvest will be the first chance I get to actually witness Portishead live; I’m very curious, therefore, to know what we can actually expect from the show. “It’s a bit of a machine,” Barrow says. “It’s pretty pounding, but not in a dance kind of way. We can’t just turn up and play a show on any kind of stage and with any kind of sound rig. It’s a very specific set-up. We’ve got to have two PAs – one for Beth and one for us. There’s loads of processing, but it’s all natural and organic. I mean, our show is not us opening up a computer and hitting a button marked Dance Effect 35. It’s all really old gear.”

Barrow and his band-made Adrian Utley treasure their vintage gear, but it can be difficult to keep so many old synths, mixers and pedals in line – that’s where Hugh comes in. “We’ve very lucky, in that we have a Hugh,” Barrow tells me with a laugh. “Hugh is a guy who tours with us who is able to fix absolutely anything in record time, and he spends most of the show with a torch on his head and a soldering iron. There is only one Hugh in the world, and he’s spectacular. He’s very important. I mean, if we arrived somewhere without him and something didn’t work, we’d have to send it away to a shop, and it would be a nightmare. We can’t live without him. Our gear is very temperamental as is – we have to take backups of everything in case it breaks down.”

I have trouble imaging a singer as fragile as Beth holding up in front of a festival crowd, but Barrow assures me that she has it down to a fine art. “Beth’s good,” he tells me. “She’s an incredible singer and songwriter. When it comes to playing live, she has to work really hard to remember where her cues are, but she’s always been like that, and we’ve got it down to a fine art at this point. It’s a bit difficult for all of us,” he continues. “I mean, it still feels somewhat ridiculous being up on stage in front of an audience of 30,000. We’re up there playing our old gear, putting together a 5,000-piece jigsaw puzzle every night, and it can be incredibly stressful, because more than anything, we really want to get it right.”

Before letting Barrow go, I would be remiss if I didn’t ask about the possibility of a new Portishead album sometime in the near future. “I’m going to go back into the studio in January,” he tells me. “What that will mean, I don’t know. I’m not sure whether Beth or Adrian will be up for it at that point, and it’s not like I would try and come up with Portishead stuff without them, but I’ve got to get myself into a place again where I can start writing. I plan to switch everything else in my brain off at that point and focus only on Portishead.”

Portishead announce 25th anniversary vinyl and CD reissue of classic ‘Roseland NYC Live’

The reissue will drop on April 26 and includes the original recordings of 'Sour Times' and 'Roads', which previously were substituted with recordings from other gigs

Beth Gibbons of Portishead in 1997

Portishead are reissuing their classic live album ‘Roseland NYC Live’ on CD and vinyl for its 25th anniversary.

  • READ MORE:  The Roots Of… Portishead

‘Roseland NYC Live 25’, a remastered version of the live album recorded in New York City’s Roseland Ballroom on November 1998, will arrive on April 26. It will have an expanded tracklisting to include ‘Undenied’ and ‘Numb’ from the accompanying concert film, as well as the full-length performance of ‘Western Eyes’, a snippet of which played over the credits of the film.

Meanwhile, the reissue includes the original versions of ‘Sour Times’ and ‘Roads’, which had been previously substituted on the album release with recordings from other gigs.

Portishead’s Adrian Utley, who oversaw the full production of the reissue, said: “I’ve always held the memory of this show which we played before our second album was released. This was the first time an audience had heard the new tunes and it was put together to launch that album.

“Great care was taken over the orchestrations and look of the filming. It preceded a year long World tour for us. Recorded and Filmed in the legendary Roseland Ballroom in New York which unfortunately doesn’t exist any more. This reissue has 3 tracks that were not released before and we’ve re-mastered all of them.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Portishead (@portisheadofficial)

The anniversary edition of the live album hit streaming services on the actual day of the record’s anniversary, November 2. The physical release consists of a limited edition double-LP set on solid red vinyl with gatefold sleeve, a double-sided fold out poster and a recreation of the guest ‘backstage’ sticky pass used at the concert. The CD also includes  the venue guest ‘backstage’ sticky pass and 12-page booklet.

In addition, to coincide with the physical reissue’s release on April 26, Watershed Cinema in Bristol will be showing the Roseland NYC Live in full with an introduction from Adrian Utley – you can buy your tickets here.

The news follows the announcement earlier this month that Portishead frontwoman Beth Gibbons will be releasing her debut solo album ‘Lives Outgrown’ in May .

The album features songs recorded over a period of 10 years, and its lead single ‘Floating On A Moment’ is available to stream now.

According to a press release, ‘Lives Outgrown’ is set to be Gibbons’ most personal work to date, and sees her reflect on the changes she has been through in her personal life, and create a more optimistic outlook.

“I realised what life was like with no hope, and that was a sadness I’d never felt. Before, I had the ability to change my future, but when you’re up against your body, you can’t make it do something it doesn’t want to do,” she said of the inspiration behind the album.

“When you’re young, you never know the endings, you don’t know how it’s going to pan out. You think: we’re going to get beyond this. It’s going to get better. Some endings are hard to digest,” she added, going on to say she has now “come out of the other end” and wants to inspire others to “be brave” with the album.

One of the most renowned and acclaimed live albums of all time, Portishead’s   Roseland NYC Live will receive an anniversary reissue, 25 years after its original release in November 1998.

To be released on April 26, this newly remastered version has an expanded tracklisting to include “Undenied” and “Numb” from the concert film, as well as the full length performance of “Western Eyes,” which played in part over the credits of the film. “Sour Times” and “Roads” are also now the original Roseland versions (previously substituted on the album release with recordings from other performances).

This anniversary edition was originally released on streaming services on the actual day of the records anniversary (November 2). It is now being made available as a limited edition double-LP set on solid red vinyl with gatefold sleeve, a double-sided fold out poster, and a re-creation of the guest “backstage” sticky pass used at the concert. There will also be a digipak CD including the venue guest “backstage” sticky pass and 12-page booklet. All iterations of this release contain the same track list.

‘extras’: how the music of the jam spread into the 1990s.

Portishead’s Adrian Utley, who has overseen the full production of this reissue, said: “I’ve always held the memory of this show which we played before our second album was released. This was the first time an audience had heard the new tunes and it was put together to launch that album. Great care was taken over the orchestrations and look of the filming. It preceded a year long World tour for us. Recorded and Filmed in the legendary Roseland Ballroom in New York which unfortunately doesn’t exist any more. This reissue has three tracks that were not released before and we’ve re-mastered all of them.”

Roseland NYC Live was originally recorded and filmed at New York’s Roseland Ballroom with a 28-piece orchestra in 1997. A live album and concert film combined, it has sold over one million copies to date.
