Other novels to feature the characters and setting of the Stargazer include:

  • Reunion (their first appearance)
  • The Valiant (essentially a "pilot" leading into the series proper)
  • The First Virtue

Three short stories have been published which involve Stargazer characters:

  • "What Dreams May Come" from the anthology Tales of the Dominion War (2004)
  • "Darkness" from the anthology Tales from the Captain's Table (2005)
  • "The Traitor" from the anthology ''Shards and Shadows'' (2009)

The Stargazer crew consists of:

  • Captain Jean Luc Picard: Not yet the elderly statesmen of TNG but the youngest captain in Starfleet at 28.
  • Commander Gilaad Ben Zoma: A black and Jewish man that was promoted from the Stargazer's chief of security to first officer. Eventually becomes captain of the U.S.S. Lexington.
  • Lieutenant Commander Elizabeth Wu: A Bothering by the Book rules lawyer. She eventually retires from Starfleet despite Picard's best efforts.
  • Lieutenant Jack Crusher: The future science officer on the ship, husband of Beverly, father of Wesley, and Doomed by Canon . Does not appear in Stargazer proper but does in flashbacks during post-series appearances.
  • Lieutenant Nol Kastiigan: The current science officer who is a Death Seeker from a Proud Warrior Race that just so happens to be an enormous nerd.
  • Lieutenant Vigo was a male Pandrilite who served as weapons officer.
  • Chief Engineer Phigus Simenon: An enormous Lizard Folk Jerk with a Heart of Gold .
  • Chief of Security Peter Joseph: A underperforming security officer who eventually becomes an alcoholic after he abandons Jack Crusher.
  • Ensign Andreas Nikolas: A Russian security operative who falls in love with a woman from the Mirror Universe .
  • Gerda Asmund: The ship's navigator and part of a pair of human-raised-by-Klingon Always Identical Twins . Is a Posthumous Character as her death kicked off the events of Reunion.
  • Idun Asmund: The ship's flight controller. She survives her sister's death and is forced to live under a cloud of suspicion due to its circumstances.
  • Carter Greyhouse: The Chief Medical Officer of the Stargazer who also has a background in engineering. Goes insane after the death of Gerda Asmund and tries to kill the rest of the crew.
  • Morgen: The hereditary ruler of a Blood Knight race that hates the Klingons. He eventually becomes a Starfleet captain.
  • Jiterica: A Starfish Alien who is literally a cloud in a containment suit. Her people want to join the Federation despite their extreme biological differences.
  • Cole Paris: The uncle of Tom Paris who eventually begins a relationship with Jiterica.
  • Obal: A alien who resembles a large turkey in a uniform.
  • Tricia Cadwallader: A communications officer who begins a short relationship with Riker.

This series contains examples of:

  • A God Am I : Brakmaktin.
  • Actually, I Am Him : Admiral McAteer is strolling the Starfleet Academy grounds, and starts thinking about Boothby, whom he admires. At least, he's heard good things about the man. He encounters an elderly groundskeeper whose general attitude annoys him (and who has the gall to tell him off). Eventually, he demands the groundskeeper's name. Upon being told he's talking to Boothby, McAteer walks off spluttering.
  • Alien Arts Are Appreciated : Nol Kastiigan, of the Kandilkari race, greatly enjoyed Romeo and Juliet . He particularly liked the ending, in which the lovers perish. See Death Seeker , below.
  • Alternate Universe : In Three .
  • And I Must Scream : Picard's torture by Brakmaktin in Maker .
  • Berserk Button : In Binderian culture, the society in which Obal originates, an assault upon a friend who comes to your aid cannot be tolerated. A Binderian responds with immediate - and highly uncharacteristic - violence if their supporter is threatened. invoked
  • Bothering by the Book : Elizabeth Wu is the living personification of the trope, stalking the halls of the Stargazer and writing up everyone from Captain Picard to the lowest junior officer for minor infractions. She gets better later on, though, after Ben Zoma engages in his own bothering to show her how ridiculous she's been.
  • Broad Strokes : The relationship of this series to the modern continuity. Events, characters and locations from Star Trek: Stargazer are frequently mentioned or featured elsewhere, but not every little detail adds up.
  • Broken Bird : Guinan begins as one in Oblivion , her spirit shattered by the loss of most of her people to the Borg and her experiences in the Nexus, until she meets Picard for the ‘first time’ (from his perspective) and witnesses his courage and compassion even for a relative stranger like her.
  • On several occasions Dr Grayhorse complains that he's not qualified to deal with psychiatric problems, and the ship really needs a trained counselor .
  • In Progenitor , a teenager on a trading vessel is fascinated by Ensign Jitercia being an organic lifeform who directly interfaces with a machine (her containment suit). He turns out to be Magnus Hansen, whose interest in such beings will eventually lead to him, his wife, and his daughter Annika being assimilated by the Borg.
  • When Picard shaves his head as a disguise in Oblivion , he says it's "only a temporary condition", to Guinan's amusement.
  • Character Witness : Picard tells Werber he'll put in a good word for him at the court-martial after Werber helps them expose a major plot. Werber is surprised, considering that he's in the brig for trying to mutiny against Picard.
  • Cross-Cultural Handshake : The Gnalish greet others with a ritualistic movement of the hands; extending them outward, palms down.
  • Elizabeth Wu makes everyone's life hell by constantly citing every regulation and preventing them from doing their jobs due to Bothering by the Book . It means the crew members have no recourse since what she says is technically true. Picard and Ben Zoma solve the issue by simply ordering her to stop.
  • Picard is given a crew of oddballs and questionably talented officers. However, as the ship's captain, he deals with the issues of the ones who can be salvaged and cashiers the ones who are hopeless or ethically compromised.
  • Dark and Troubled Past : Obviously the reader is already aware that Guinan has lost her family to the Borg and spent a brief time in the Nexus, but Oblivion expands on that to reveal that the family Guinan lost included her youngest daughter, the child most like Guinan who she gave birth to after all her other children had grown up and moved on.
  • Death Seeker : Nol Kastiigan. It's actually played for laughs; Kastiigan is eager to be placed in peril, so as to just maybe die heroically and earn his family honor. He's not psychologically ill, it's just Blue-and-Orange Morality . Kandilkari culture holds that a heroic death is to be sought out at all costs. He has a habit of sidling up to Captain Picard or another command officer in times of danger, hinting that if a single crewman is needed for a perilous solo mission... well, he's your man. He's usually told, "no thank you, back to work". Unfortunately for Kastiigan, he's a science officer, so his talents simply aren't what's usually called for in such missions.
  • The Ubarrak Primacy may be a powerful rival to the Federation and Cardassians here (at least in one particular sector) but their lack of appearance in Star Trek: The Next Generation or Star Trek: Deep Space Nine means they can't actually become the major power they're aiming to be.
  • Jack Crusher is inevitably going to die before the events of TNG.
  • Gerda Asmund will also die due to her death being the triggering event of "Reunion."
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him : Vigo, despite being a major character in Three , dies off-camera during the Battle of Maxia in The Buried Age.
  • Enemy Mine : Commander Dojjaron of the Nuyyad teams up with the Stargazer crew to take down Brakmaktin.
  • Evil Is Petty : Admiral McAteer spends a good deal of his time trying to wreck Picard's career for no other reason than he was appointed by his predecessor as well as being the youngest captain in Starfleet (and even that he's hypocritical on).
  • In The Valiant , Starfleet displays a huge amount of this to the human descendants of the titular ship's crew due to the fact that they have Gary Mitchell's silver eyes as well as powers.
  • In Gauntlet , Joesph Caber displays a 'massive' amount of this to Obal until finally triggering his Berserk Button .
  • Fantastic Caste System : The Balduk, with their High Order, Middle Order, and Low Order militaries. Also the Pandrilites, whose elevated and lower castes are supposedly now united by their adherence to the Three Virtues. Pandrilite protagonist Vigo has come to question this, though; an old mentor became involved with a radical sect insisting oppression of the lower castes is ongoing, and Vigo's faith in his people was shaken. Vigo takes a leave of absence in the final book so that he can return to Pandril and find out of his mentor was right, thinking that if so, a famous upper-caste member like himself would be harder for the government to ignore.
  • Follow in My Footsteps : Cole Paris, son of Iron Mike Paris , and brother of Owen Paris complains that there was never any question that not only would he join Starfleet, he'd be one of the greatest Starfleet officers ever. When he arrives on the Stargazer , he suffers panic attacks when attempting anything that might bring shame on the Paris name if he gets it wrong.
  • Heel–Face Turn : Played with twice. In Enigma , Obstructive Bureaucrat Admiral McAteer seems to defrost into a Jerk with a Heart of Gold . After a dangerous mission alongside Commander Gilaad ben Zoma, he appears to make a peace offering and reveal a more understanding side to his character. However, it transpires he was merely trying to manipulate ben Zoma. In Maker , murderous super-powered alien Brakmaktin also appears to be reconsidering his former conduct and having an epiphany. It turns out it was just him screwing with his captive. He's a jerk, is Brakmaktin.
  • Hypocrite : Admiral McAteer's primary objection to Picard is the idea that he's too young to captain a starship. Yet one of his attempts to get Picard removed involves offering command of the Stargazer to Gilaad ben Zoma...who's a year younger than Picard.
  • Inadequate Inheritor : Most of Starfleet assumes Picard will be this to his predecessor due to his age. Obviously, we know better.
  • Interspecies Romance : A truly odd example with Cole Paris and Jiterica, a non-Humanoid being whose natural form is essentially a cloud of mist.
  • Admiral McAteer is a stupendous example of such, being an Obstructive Bureaucrat Smug Snake carrying out a wholly unjustified vendetta against Picard.
  • Joesph Caber proves to be a Fantastic Racism suffering bully despite initially seeming to be a nice guy.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold : Phigus Simenon has a tough personality but is always working for his crew.
  • Lizard Folk : The Gnalish, who are members of the United Federation of Planets , and represented in the main cast by Phigus Simenon. They are split between three subspecies; one is strong and powerful, the second swift and lithe, the third particularly smart. Simenon is of the third group.
  • Carter Greyhorse is obsessed with Gerda Asmund and her death drives him to plot the murder of the rest of the crew in "Reunion."
  • Nikolas suffers a catastrophic breakdown in his ability to do his job after having his heart broken by the Mirror Universe Gerda Asmund.
  • Martyrdom Culture : Nol Kastiigan's culture, the Kandilkari. Dying heroically is their greatest purpose, apparently.
  • Mind Rape : Brakmaktin pulls off a few in Maker .
  • Mirror Universe : The Gerda Asmund that shows up in Three claims she's not from one. She's lying.
  • Misaimed Fandom : invoked Admiral McAteer's total Jerkass status is confirmed when he watches Macbeth and starts wondering what William Shakespeare had against people with ambition.
  • Multicultural Alien Planet : The Gnalish, of which chief engineer Phigus Simenon is a member, have three separate subspecies, although they'are able to interbreed (or, at least, fertilize the same eggs). Simenon's subspecies, being either weaker or slower than the others, have learned to be highly resourceful and wily, which helps when you're Picard's chief engineer.
  • The Mutiny : Lieutenant Werber tries to pull one shortly after Picard ends up in command, but Vigo overheard the plot and tipped Picard and Ben Zoma off.
  • New Neighbours as the Plot Demands : The series has a habit of inventing new, supposedly powerful spacefaring cultures that are rarely if ever mentioned in other Trek novels. The Ubarrak Primacy is the most prominant of these; apparently a major local power, it's only been mentioned (offhand) in one non-Stargazer novel. Then there's the Nuyyad, the Aristaani... at least the Balduk were canonically established. The Nuyyad at least have the excuse of living on the other side of the Galactic Barrier.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat : Admiral McAteer gives Picard assignments he deliberately hopes will cause him to fail and/or humiliate him. He also assigns him a Ragtag Bunch of Misfits in hopes it will undermine him. Picard is mystified why the man has it out for him.
  • Proud Warrior Race : The Daa’Vit. Bonus points for their ongoing Blood Feud with Trek’s most famous Proud Warrior Race , the Klingons.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits : Admiral McInteer assigns a bunch of underperforming officers to Picard in hopes of making the Stargazer into this. Picard just trains the one who can be trained and removes the ones who prove inadequate, as is his right.
  • Raised by Natives : After their parent's death, the Asmund sisters were raised by Klingons.
  • Red Baron : The "White Wolf" is an infamous pirate who turns out to just be defending a pre-warp culture from exploitation.
  • Red Herring : The reader is obviously supposed to think the female bartender that Picard meets on Oblivion is Guinan. Nope, she's just a random bartender. Guinan is an unemployed drifter at this time.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor : A rare in-universe one. Juanita Valderrama was given a chance to repair her underperforming reputation and gives a suggestion that saves the day in "Gauntlet." This backfires as it turns out she stole credit for someone else's idea and doing so caused Picard to order her off his ship.
  • Scary Dogmatic Aliens : The Balduk, the Ubarrak, the Nuyyad... the series likes this one. Of course, there are far more aliens who aren't of the "scary dogmatic" type, but most of the villains seem to fit the trope.
  • The Schizophrenia Conspiracy : Played with - at one point Lieutenant Ulelo is misdiagnosed as a schizophrenic who believes he is sending classified information to mysterious alien masters for unknown reasons.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections! : Ensign Caber tells Picard that his father, a high-ranking Admiral, will not be pleased when he finds out Picard booted his son off the Stargazer . But subverted when Admiral Caber admits his son is a brat that has only gotten by because his other commanders were afraid to discipline him due to his family name.
  • Smug Snake : Admiral McAteer is incompetent as well as utterly full of himself. His feud with Picard is also seemingly motivated solely by the fact he was appointed by his predecessor.
  • Space Station : Oblivion , or rather Obl'viaan in the original Ubarrak. It's an enormous construction in orbit of a lifeless planet, consisting of hundreds (if not thousands) of ships and stations welded together. In fact, it's not so much a space station as a space city. It is definitely of a Wretched Hive variety. It's also the place where Picard first meets Guinan, although she's a little upset he doesn't know who she is.
  • Stalking is Love : Carter Greyhorse devotes himself to winning Gerda Asmund by challenging her to constant practice battles as well as following her around like a puppy. He even mentions that he'd have recommended therapy to himself if somehow he'd found himself as a patient. It is not played as romantic but creepy.
  • Starfish Aliens : Nizhrak'a. Native to a gas giant, they are basically sapient clouds of mist. In their usual state, they can grow to the size of a starship. Their representative in Starfleet, Jiterica, compresses herself down to humanoid size, and squeezes into an environmental suit. It's rather uncomfortable.
  • Stock Ness Monster : Apparently, the trope isn't just confined to Earth. The Kandilkari have "The Lake Dweller That Roars", though it's unclear as to whether it's real or not. Nol Kastiigan seems to think so, but it's not certain.
  • This Is Unforgivable! : Simenon tells Werber that their friendship is over - not just because Werber attempted to start a mutiny, but also because Simenon stood up for him and Werber abused that trust.
  • Twin Threesome Fantasy : The Asmund twins were raised by Klingons and are not very familiar with human sexuality. One of the sisters notices a crewman ogling them and asks her sister why he's doing that. The sister, being a little more versed in the subject, explains that he's probably imagining what it'd be like to sleep with both of them. The first sister is confused, as Klingon sex is extremely violent, and a threesome would be deadly. Also, she thinks that the man should want to have sex with two women who look different, for a little variety.
  • Water Source Tampering : In The First Virtue , a fanatical Cordracite poisons her city's water supply in order to escalate a conflict with another race, assuming they'll be blamed.
  • We Will Not Use Stage Makeup In The Future : Averted. Guinan disguises herself and Picard as Cataxxans by shaving their scalps and dying their skin purple.
  • You Are in Command Now : In The Valiant , Captain Daithan Ruhalter and First Officer Stephen Leach of the Stargazer are killed and critically injured, respectively, suddenly forcing Picard into the position of temporary CO. He doesn't exactly have an easy time of it, but he eventually gets a two-grade jump to Captain. Subsequent novels reveal that not everybody was happy about the promotion. Specifically, Admiral Arlen McAteer has his own vision of Starfleet, and it doesn't include young upstart captains like Picard. While McAteer can't demote Picard himself, as Picard reports to Admiral Mehdi, he can set tasks for him that would reveal Picard's incompetence or lack of experience, forcing Mehdi to reverse his decision.
  • You Have Failed Me : The Cardassians apparently have a saying; "Those who fail the Union are not demoted; they are eliminated ".

10 Jean-Luc Picard Books You Need to Read Right Now

Make it so.

Star Trek: Picard Books

StarTrek.com

When Jean-Luc Picard took command of the U.S.S. Enterprise at the beginning of Star Trek: The Next Generation , he confessed to his new first officer, William Riker, that he was uncomfortable around children. Despite this unease, Starfleet saw fit to give him a ship with families and children numbering among the vessel’s complement.

It took a while, but Picard soon relaxed — ever so slightly — when in the presence of the youngsters running around the Enterprise . It soon became an annual event for the children to celebrate “Captain Picard Day.” The festivities included an art contest in which entries were judged by the good captain himself. Though Picard was never happy with the idea of being at the center of such activities, he understood his position as a role model for these impressionable young minds. For the sake of crew morale, he put on his game face and gritted his teeth while accepting with grace the attentions lavished upon him.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

We find out in the first season of Star Trek: Picard that thirty years after the first such observance was held aboard the Enterprise , the good captain held onto one of the colorful banners used to signify the day. Of course he’s a sentimental softy; we all knew it.

Here in the real world, “Captain Picard Day” has been celebrated by Star Trek fans dating back to 2007. How June 16th came to the be “official” day depends on whether you believe Star Trek ’s stardates can easily be converted to actual calendar dates. Some intrepid fan did the math and arrived at that date, so here we are.

Since his introduction in 1987, Jean-Luc Picard has been the face of Star Trek: The Next Generation . A man of many talents and interests and possessed of tremendous convictions, we grew to love him over the course of the television series and subsequent motion pictures, and now fans get to enjoy him in all new stories with Star Trek: Picard . Elsewhere, he’s been at the center of numerous tales told within the pages of novels and comics spanning more than thirty years and continuing to this day.

While certainly not intended as an exhaustive list, here are just a few stories which have explored the inimitable character of Jean-Luc Picard.

Vendetta by Peter David (May 1991)

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Vendetta

The Borg have become one of Star Trek ’s greatest adversaries, appearing in several episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager and even once on Star Trek: Enterprise . After the events of Picard’s kidnapping by the Borg in “The Best of Both Worlds” but before the discovery of Hugh in “I, Borg,” author Peter David brings the Borg back to try their hand at invading the Federation once again. This time, however, the Collective faces a threat capable of annihilating them.

Reunion by Michael Jan Friedman (November 1991)

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Reunion

This was the first novel to explore Picard’s past as captain of the U.S.S. Stargazer , which he commanded for 22 years. Friedman introduces us to several of Picard’s old friends and shipmates who helped Picard become the formidable, experienced leader he is by the time we meet him on Star Trek: The Next Generation . This book ended up spawning its own series of novels, Star Trek: Stargazer , all written by Friedman.

Requiem by Michael Jan Friedman and Kevin Ryan (October 1994)

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Requiem

When Picard is thrown back in time after encountering a mysterious alien object, he awakens to find himself at a pivotal point in history: one hundred years in the past, on the Federation colony planet Cestus III. He knows the colonists will be annihilated by a Gorn vessel, resulting in first contact with this heretofore unknown race and an epic confrontation between the Gorn ship’s commander and the legendary Captain James T. Kirk. Trapped a century removed from his own ship and crew, Picard must navigate the coming events without doing anything which may alter history as he knows it.

Perchance to Dream by Keith R.A. DeCandido, illustrated by Peter Pachoumis and Lucian Rizzo (February – May 2000)

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Perchance to Dream

An extremist faction on an alien world is using a “telepathic virus” as a weapon to influence dreams to a point where the victims begin experiencing dangerous hallucinations. When the Enterprise crew falls victim to the attack, Picard fights back using the other personalities which are now a part of his identity: Sarek via his mind meld with the Vulcan ambassador, Kamin, the man whose life Picard lived in “The Inner Life,” and Locutus, his Borg persona.

The Buried Age by Christopher L. Bennett (July 2007)

Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Buried Age

This novel offers a study of Picard’s life before the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation : the nine years between the loss of the Stargazer and his taking command of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D . Think you know the story? Think again!

Destiny trilogy by David Mack (September-November 2008)

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Destiny

Set just two years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis , this epic trilogy sees the Borg determined to conquer their most formidable adversary once and for all. The stakes are high and the costs very real as the Borg drive through Federation space, destroying worlds and wiping out billions of people. More than a decade after its initial publication, the ramifications of this storyline continue to resonate within the Star Trek novels’ “expanded universe.”

Hive by Brannon Braga, Terry Matalas, and Travis Fickett; illustrated by Joe Corroney (September-January 2013)

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Hive

Star Trek comics chart different storytelling paths from the novels, and Braga, Matalas, and Fickett use the format to bring readers a tale stretching from a point soon after Star Trek: Nemesis to a far future where Picard is still Locutus and part of the Borg. To defeat them this time, Picard needs help from someone else who’s escaped the Collective: Seven of Nine.

The Autobiography of Jean-Luc Picard by David A. Goodman (October 2017)

The Autobiography of Jean-Luc Picard

Published by Titan Books, this examination of the famous captain’s life and career is not compatible with the novels from Simon & Schuster. However, it is in synch with what we know of Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation and the subsequent films and is therefore a fun read for fans who’ve not already plunged headlong into the novel continuity.

Picard: Countdown by Kirsten Beyer & Mike Johnson, illustrated by Angel Hernandez (November 2019 – January 2020)

Star Trek: Picard - Countdown

Set fifteen years before the events of Star Trek: Picard ’s first season, this 3-part comics miniseries by Picard co-creator Kirsten Beyer and IDW Star Trek comics veteran Mike Johnson gives readers a glimpse at one of the several missions Admiral Picard undertook during his mission to relocate Romulan citizens before their sun goes supernova. It also introduces us to Zhaban and Laris, the two Romulan Tal Shiar agents who will forsake their careers to assist Picard.

The Last Best Hope by Una McCormack (February 2020)

Star Trek: Picard - The Last Best Hope

This epic, years-spanning tale reveals the full scope of the massive undertaking Jean-Luc Picard led on behalf of the Romulan people, beginning with his promotion to admiral and transfer of command to the U.S.S. Verity , where he gains a new first officer and friend, Raffi Musiker. McCormack charts the obstacles Picard and Musiker chart while attempting to carry out their vital mission even as resistance to the effort mounts from all sides. This culminates in the tragic events on Mars in 2385 and setting the stage for Star Trek: Picard ’s first season.

Star Trek is a series of episodes initially divided into three seasons and produced by America based producer Gene Roddenberry which was an experiment of its own kind and later set the legend for many people. Star Trek is highly appraised by many people around the world for its futuristic thinking as per the time and era it was created in. There are huge crowds at its big conventions where people can meet their favorite stars and discuss episodes and theories with other people. The genre of science fiction got a new meaning through this show and the ideas used in each episode. While initially this show was not quite famous and accepted widely it stopped producing once CBS cancelled it in 1969 after which the show got quite famous through a process known as syndicate broadcasting where a channel can buy the original rights of a television show to broadcast it as per their timings. Soon it grew famous and remained a legacy throughout the 70’s becoming a huge hit and a cult classic with people known as trekkies devoted to each and every aspect of the show and having great knowledge about it. Such people regularly attend the meetings and events of Star Trek and maintain an amazing fan base for the series at all times.

Storyline of the books: The story of the episodes of the Star Trek book series originally released are adventures of the starship which travels through a part of the milky way galaxy and is known as the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701). The crew members aboard the space ship are the leading captain of the crew James T. Kirk whose role is played by William Shatner who became quite famous for his acting through the show along with other cast once the show gained popularity. Other members of the crew are First officer and science officer Spock played by Leonard Nimoy and is often compared with the crew’s captain Kirk, another crew member is the chief medical officer Leonard McCoy who is played by DeForest Kelly.

The storyline of the show is based about the year 2260’s and the time is measured in startime in the series. The initial series got the name after its fame as Star Trek: The Original Series so that it always stands out amongst the massive fan along with media franchise. Captain Kirk often states the purpose of the series in the beginning of the episodes in the world renowned series by introducing the show as voyages of the Starship Enterprise and its mission for five years is to go on an exploratory mission on different planets in order to find and research them and seek out new life and civilizations primarily by going where no human has gone previously.

Creation of Star Trek: Gene Roddenberry, finished drafting a short plot for a series based on science fiction on March 11th 1964, which he referred to as Star Trek and was set aboard a spaceship on the 23rd century. While his influences to the idea of Star Trek as accepted by Roddenberry himself include the stories featuring spaceship Space Beagle written by A. E. van Vogt along with Marathon which is a series of stories written by Eric Brand Russell along with the film Forbidden Planet launched in 1956.

While the works of Roddenberry are one of their kind and imprinted in history people have been seen debating his television series similar to a television series Rocky Jones, Space Ranger launched in 1956 which has similar elements to that of Star Trek along with a few technologies displayed on the show as well. While Roddenberry accepts deriving elements for his show from the Horatio Hornblower novels which depict a daring sea captain who goes on a journey for a noble purpose and overcomes various feats using his authority and daring and Roddenberry sometimes refers Captain Kirk by referring to him as Horatio Hornblower in Space.

Roddenberry had a good share of experience in writing successfully crafted television series which depicted his fine artistic skills through their popularity in the decades following 1960 and 1950. Except Star Trek: Deep Space Nine all the later movies based on Star Trek are based around the idea originally used by Roddenberry in the original series which depicted each episode as having a separate storyline contained within a single episode through a different adventure. In short the script was drafted such that each episode is a new adventure of the ship at a new location while their main motive remains carrying on at a slower pace. Thus, any person can view an episode as each episode has its own different story and is quite independent of others.

Books published in Star Trek: James Blish was the first person to write Star Trek books through short stories for each episode into one book. He wrote total 11 books based on the three seasons of original Star Trek episodes. The books were quite famous once the show gained popularity and Bantam Books republished Blish’s books in three volumes one for each season. There was an acknowledgement stating that after Star Trek 7 or Star Trek 8 the credit for writing Star Trek novels goes to his wife and mother J. A. Lawrence who ghost wrote the books for him. A short story written by Blish’s wife known as Mudd’s Angels was published with the book. The Star Trek books were published from 1967 to 1975 based on rough initial drafts for the show and initially they were not referenced to the show since James Blish was based in United Kingdom and the show had not yet been aired there.

With time the fans have grown for the show and books and people and experts often state the phenomenon of Star Trek as ever growing with time and people are found in huge crowds at the premiering of new episodes, movies, comics, books, graphic novels etc. at the Star Trek conventions. There are new experiments done by a variety of writer and a number of franchised shows for Star Trek have been released along with books over time. Many of the Star Trek books and comics along with shows cover the original show in an enhanced or detailed manner there are also a vivid variety of cases where people have based the book on a show or with their unique inputs. Some famous fan or company based books have also become the plotline of famous Star Trek movies or stories while some comics and book series of star trek are genuinely famous for their writing style and regular updates. Many of these franchised books do not relate to the original series in many aspects along with the plotline and there is a huge variety to choose from.

What to Choose: While there are a number of options available to the readers beginning with the initial novels of Blish are the best idea as it gives the starting plot of the story thought by the creator at that point. There are also a huge number of famous and appraised novels created by fans and other companies along with a wide array of books which grow in number each week and many of these books are quite impressive.

Service history [ ]

The Stargazer entered service in 2326 , on stardate 38197.5. ( TNG : " The Battle " dedication plaque (X) ; PIC : " The Star Gazer " commemorative plaque (X) )

In 2333 , Jean-Luc Picard served as a bridge officer on this vessel. He later described the Stargazer as an " overworked, underpowered vessel, always on the verge of flying apart at the seams . " ( TNG : " Relics ")

When the ship's captain was killed, Picard took command of the situation and the vessel. ( TNG : " Tapestry ")

Starfleet Command looked so favorably on Picard's actions, that they appointed him as the vessel's new commanding officer , a post he held for twenty-two years. Picard's crew included Jack R. Crusher , a weapons officer named Vigo , as well as physician Moritz Benayoun . ( TNG : " The Battle "; PIC : " Maps and Legends ")

At one point, the Stargazer was involved in a secret mission to the fireforest of Calyx . ( PIC : " Maps and Legends ")

The Stargazer saw action in the Cardassian Wars . The ship was involved in a truce offering by the Federation in sector 21503 .

After making contact with a Cardassian warship , Captain Picard lowered the ship's shields as a gesture of good will, but as he later put it, " the Cardassians were not impressed. " They managed to take out most of the Stargazer 's weapons and damaged its impulse engines . The Stargazer managed to regroup and flee. ( TNG : " The Wounded ")

In 2353 , Jack R. Crusher was killed on an away mission, forcing Picard to present Crusher's remains to his widow, Beverly . ( TNG : " Tapestry ", " Violations ", " Encounter at Farpoint ")

In 2354 , the Stargazer visited the planet Chalna . ( TNG : " Allegiance ")

Battle of Maxia [ ]

Picard on the bridge of the Stargazer

In 2355 , the Stargazer was attacked and severely damaged by an unknown vessel in the Maxia Zeta system . Picard was able to destroy the attacking vessel, using what would later be named the Picard Maneuver . The Stargazer was overcome by fire and severe damage during the battle and had to be abandoned. The event was called the " Battle of Maxia " by the Ferengi . ( TNG : " The Battle ")

As the loss of a starship was a court martial offense, Picard was court-martialed for the loss of the Stargazer , zealously prosecuted by Phillipa Louvois . In the end, he was absolved of all charges. ( TNG : " The Battle ", " The Measure Of A Man ")

Recovery [ ]

In 2364 , the wreck of the Stargazer was found adrift and salvaged by the Ferengi. The Ferengi DaiMon Bok desired revenge against Picard, as his son had died commanding the attacking vessel at the "Battle of Maxia". He falsified the logs of the Stargazer to indicate that it was the Stargazer that committed an unprovoked attack against the Ferengi vessel. Through the use of an illegal " thought maker ", Bok caused Captain Picard to relive the day of the battle in hallucinations , supposedly as a mental breakdown after the real truth had come out. When the devices were discovered, William T. Riker was able to convince the captain to destroy the "thought maker" causing his hallucinations. The Stargazer was towed to Xendi Starbase 9 . ( TNG : " The Battle ")

The Stargazer was later sent to the Fleet Museum at Athan Prime , where it was restored and put on display in 2402 . ( PIC : " The Star Gazer " commemorative plaque ; PIC : " The Bounty ", " Vox ", " The Last Generation ")

This incident was mentioned, as an example of Jean-Luc Picard's supposed incompetence, by Lieutenant Commander Dexter Remmick when questioning Deanna Troi . Remmick alleged that, according to Picard's own logs , he had suffered from a mental lapse. Although Troi protested that he had been under the control of a Ferengi thought maker , Remmick wasn't swayed in his opinion. ( TNG : " Coming of Age ")

In 2365 , when speaking with Guinan about her origins, Wesley Crusher said that he had heard from some of the crew that she had met Picard when he was the commanding officer of the Stargazer . Guinan replied that she didn't know the captain until she came aboard the USS Enterprise -D . ( TNG : " The Child ")

USS Stargazer model

Picard's model of the Stargazer

In 2369 , Picard would look back fondly on his time commanding the Stargazer and once confided to Montgomery Scott that, even after several years of commanding the far superior USS Enterprise -D, there were still times he would give almost anything to command the Stargazer again. ( TNG : " Relics ")

A model of the Stargazer was stored in Picard's section of the quantum archive at the Starfleet Archive Museum . ( PIC : " Remembrance ")

Ensigns Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler had a model of the Stargazer at their Starfleet recruitment booth on Tulgana IV in 2381 . Mariner threw the model at a pair of conspiracy truthers who were heckling them, causing Boimler to exclaim, " Not the 'Gazer ! " ( LD : " Reflections ")

In 2399 , Dr. Benayoun was called to Picard's home , and commented on his realization that the purpose was not to reminisce about the Stargazer . ( PIC : " Maps and Legends ")

Later that year, Picard corrected Dr. Agnes Jurati that the Picard Maneuver had originated aboard the Stargazer rather than the Enterprise . ( PIC : " Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2 ")

By 2401 , a commemorative plaque honored the Stargazer at Starfleet Academy for its role in two historic battles. Additionally, a new USS Stargazer (NCC-82893) was commissioned to carry on the Stargazer legacy. ( PIC : " The Star Gazer ")

The Stargazer was kept at the Fleet Museum over Athan Prime . ( PIC : " The Bounty ") In 2402 , the rebuilt USS Enterprise -D was returned to the Fleet Museum and given a place of honor between the USS Enterprise -A and the Stargazer . ( PIC : " The Last Generation ")

Background information [ ]

The name Stargazer first appears in notes by Gene Roddenberry in 1986, in which he writes of the captain of the new USS Enterprise , then tentatively named William T. English (but which would later become Picard), " He is excited by the adventure of human intelligence challenged by the mysteries of the stars. At the Starfleet Academy, his (affectionate) nickname was 'Stargazer.' " [1]

A gold-painted model of the Constellation -class NCC-7100 served as regular set dressing in the set of Captain Picard's USS Enterprise -D ready room. This model was often mistakenly assumed to be of the Stargazer . This mistake was perpetuated by the Star Trek Encyclopedia  (3rd ed., p. 469). As noted in other sources, however, the idea of the Stargazer was conceived after that gold model had been created, though it was eventually used to create the filming model for this ship.

The Stargazer was originally intended to be a Constitution -class vessel, the same as Captain Kirk 's USS Enterprise . In fact, in the first draft script of "The Battle", the Stargazer was identified as not only being of that class but also from the "late 23rd century." The latter notion wasn't included in the episode's final draft script, which nonetheless still contained multiple references to the Stargazer as a Constitution -class ship. [2] Additionally, the yellow NCC-7100 model was replaced with a silver Constitution -class model in Picard's ready room for "The Battle". When the Stargazer filming model was eventually designed, it was decided that a new model, derisively referred to as the "pie dish", should be used. Since LeVar Burton had already recorded a line of dialogue identifying the ship as Constitution -class, the name of the new ship's class had to be similar to "Constitution" to make it easy to overdub; the production crew settled on "Constellation".

In 1994 , Galoob produced a toy model of the Stargazer as part of their Micromachines line. The coloring on the model was completely wrong and was actually based on the coloring of the NCC-7100 model seen in Picard's office.

In a Starfleet Technical Database article ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 1, Issue 2 ) written by Rick Sternbach , it was stated that, after the Stargazer was towed back to Xendi Starbase 9, it was repaired, and returned to limited active duty for eight years (from 2366 to 2374 ), after which it was mothballed as a museum ship at the Copernicus Yard Museum, Luna, alongside the USS Valkyrie (NCC-2590). Kept in a nitrogen - oxygen atmosphere for tours and academic study, the Stargazer was kept in a semi-operational state, to be re-activated for duty when circumstances dictated such an action.

The bridge of the Stargazer was previously seen as the battle bridge of the Enterprise -D in " Encounter at Farpoint ". Before The Next Generation , the set was used as the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Motion Picture . ( Creating the Next Generation )

The Starfleet orders giving Picard command of the Stargazer were preserved in the Picard family album . ( Star Trek Encyclopedia  (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 143))

The model of the Stargazer was one of the props displayed at Comic Con's exhibit Jean-Luc Picard: The First Duty in the summer of 2019. It is stated in a sign that the ship was decomissioned at the end of 2364. [3]

Dialogue in PIC : " The Star Gazer " was slightly ambiguous about whether the USS Stargazer captained by Cristóbal Rios was a completely new ship or a refit of Picard's Stargazer . In an interview with TrekMovie.com, Star Trek: Picard showrunner Terry Matalas was asked to clarify this question. He said:

The observation lounge on Rios' Stargazer contained models of three ships: the Radiant -class USS Stargazer , Picard's Constellation -class Stargazer , and Rios' Sagan -class ship.

Apocrypha [ ]

The crew of the Stargazer had been featured in many novels by Michael Jan Friedman . First appearing in Pocket TNG : Reunion , a novel published by Pocket Books , it had spun off the Star Trek: Stargazer series, during which the ship had a brief encounter with the mirror universe , as well as detailing Picard's first meeting with Guinan during a confrontation with Enabran Tain . The full circumstances of the Battle of Maxia, and Picard's history between the loss of the Stargazer and becoming captain of the Enterprise -D, are covered in the novel The Buried Age .

The Stargazer was also included as a playable ship in the video game Star Trek: Legacy . During the story, it was revealed that the ship's captain, Daithan Ruhalter ( β ), is killed on the bridge and the ship severely damaged from a shock wave resulting from renegade Vulcan T'Uerell ( β ) destroying a planet in the Neutral Zone. Picard took command of the ship and attempted to stop stellar debris from destroying other planets in a Federation system. The player can control the Stargazer with Picard in command during this mission in the game.

The Stargazer prevented an interplanetary war in the Double Helix novel #6, The First Virtue .

USS Stargazer (NCC-2893-A) in Star Trek Online

In Star Trek Online , a new USS Stargazer ( β ) (NCC-2893-A) was built in the years after Star Trek Nemesis , as the first of a new class of heavy cruiser .

The Stargazer -class ( β ) was one of the available design choices (along with the Cheyenne -class and Dakota -class ( β )) for the Heavy Cruiser ship available to Federation characters at the rank of Commander. Additionally, the original Constellation -class, with a console that allows the ship to perform the Picard Maneuver, can be purchased from the in-game store.
