Porto, Aveiro,Lisbon

8 days − self guided, 3 & 4* hotels & country inns.

Ride alongside the Portuguese northern coast to arrive in Lisbon!

This self-guided bike tour is a beautiful journey down the Portuguese shoreline and visiting many cultural and historic sites. It links two of the main cities in Portugal, Porto, and its vibrant capital, Lisbon and many seaside places like Figueira da Foz and Óbidos, the walled town.

Enjoy Porto, a Unesco World Heritage City in Western Europe and learn about its famous wine and gastronomy, experience Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal, and arrive in Lisbon, a city that has served as inspiration for many artists, writers, photographers and filmmakers through the ages.

Admire its brightly coloured buildings straddling the slopes, striking ochre roofs, tile-covered building facades and narrow twisting alleys of the medieval districts.  It is one of Europe’s finest capital cities and a great achievement to cycle to!

porto to lisbon bike tour

This was our second bike tour with Cycling Country and Portugal did not disappoint. Thank you again.”

Birmingham, England

Day 1. PORTO ARRIVAL

Arrive into Porto  and to your hotel in this historic and fascinating city. Creating a bit of a buzz for itself, Porto has become a popular cultural place and you will enjoy your day exploring the Ribeira , the medieval centre and its many interesting buildings, cafes, galleries and shops. Gof for a walk riverside, seeing the Eiffel bridge or over to the Port Wine lodges on the southern bank, but be careful on your way home! Don’t over enjoy those lodges. A UNESCO Heritage city, you will be spoiled for choice here for what to do and that is true especially so for dinner, as the city has many fine Portuguese spots to dine.

Day 2. PORTO TO FURADOURO

Ride: 42 km | Elevation Gain: 77 m It is always nice to get out of the big city and your cycle today is a nice flat one, in which you will just fly along. Via many small towns hugging the coast with Umbrella fir trees and sandy beaches it is a pleasant ride. Heading towards Furadouro , surrounded by pine forests, you will enjoy this quiet ride and the town itself is a good base for the night.

Day 3. FURADOURO TO AVEIRO

Ride: 40 km | Elevation Gain: 40 m Another great day of flat cycling and through the nice Natural Reserve of Sao Jacinto with a small boat transfer. Aveiro is a popular day trip from Porto and it known as the Portuguese Venice with so many inlets and canals with brightly hand painted colourful boats called Moliceiro , used for collecting seaweed bobbing in the marinas. A thriving port through the Middle Ages due to vast sea salt pans which supplied the entire country, you still can visit these salt dunes today and soak in these medicinal properties. Very handsome pastel coloured homes line the streets and the old town is pretty around the fish market. Homes there are attractively tiled in those famous Portuguese Azulejos and there are some very nice examples of Art Nouveau in the town. You might want to try (or not!!) the town’s specialty of eels which are from the town’s lagoon.

Day 4. AVEIRO TO FIGEIRA DA FOZ

Ride: 35 km | Elevation Gain: 124 m A little bit harder cycling day today on your way to Lisbon with a small climb near the end of the day, but a lovely cycle nevertheless. You leave along the canal and reach the town of Mira and its quaint beachside fishing village. The fishing boats are very pretty with their curved bows, reminders of a Phoenician past and the villages along this coast was only settled in the 19th century due to piracy threats onwards from the Vikings.. The coast is long and impressive and stretches for miles here and you can have some marvellous seafood whilst you wait for your transfer to Figueira da Foz . Based on the Rio Mondego, it is a popular place for tourists due to its huge beach and has a lively atmosphere with its many outdoor plazas of cafes and restaurants.

Day 5. TO NAZARÉ

Ride: 81 km | Elevation Gain: 533 m This is a wonderful ride today (although your biggest day yet) along the sparkling Atlantic coast, and via what was the Pinhal de Leira pine forest . This  “Royal Pine Forest” track was originally built in the 14th century by King Dinis, known as the farmer king, in order to build a barrier to the encroaching beach sands. It is a nice area of wildlife and an air infused with pine and sea saltiness.  It is growing back after forest fires of years past but still a pleasant area to cycle. Today’s rolling route follows the Atlantic Road, designated cycling route, past the sentinel lighthouses through the Costa da Prata (Silver coast) to Nazaré , Portugal’s famous fishing town but one now most known for the massive waves that International surfers make their names on. Incredible views of the goliaths that come storming in, is from the upper part of town at the lighthouse overlooking the Atlantic. Try a fish dinner tonight, as it won’t come fresher than those served here.

Day 6. TO ÓBIDOS

Ride: 48 km | Elevation Gain: 460 m This is an exciting day of cycling starting along the Atlantic coast with a more touristic bent included. There is some climbing to do today but it is a charming route with beautiful vistas. You continue inland to medieval Óbidos , with a most enchanting blue and white tiled entrance, the Porta da Vila, through its solid fortified walls. The narrow winding cobbled streets lead up to the beautiful castle with its lovely rounded turrets. The village itself is delightful with flower pots spilling out of windows and bright colours on white-washed walls. In medieval times this place was so loved by the wife of King Dinis, that he gifted it to her. We hope you will feel the same way!

Day 7. LISBOA!

Get up early to wander this atmospheric place of Óbidos before your 11am transfer into the Capital city of Lisbon which rests on the Tagus river. One of Europe’s most vibrant and exciting places appealing to all with its romantic Alfama hillside district where the houses rest on top of each other in a most photogenic way and the modern day “medieval” castle tops it. The sights are many in this lovely city of World War II intrigue, medieval legends, art galleries galore and museums for everyone and without doubt, some world class food opportunities. Catch a tram over to the district of Belem and enjoy the stupendous UNESCO Heritage sites of the Jeronimos Monastery and 16th century Belem Tower the launch marker from which many Portuguese explorers left. Wander over and get a delicious Pastel de nata, cream tart, a real Portuguese favourite and perhaps visit the botanical gardens or even intriguing Carriage museum. This full day doesn’t even factor in, enjoying late night Fado music , a true cultural treat of this city!

Day 8. LISBON TO LISBON AIRPORT

We hate to say goodbye, and so will you for leaving this place really is a heartbreak. Or don’t stop and join us on our guided tour of the beautiful and traditional Alentejo area or keep self guiding all the way down the Blue Coast to the Algarve ! The choices are endless. Boa Viagem and we hope you enjoyed your trip down the West Coast!

Cycling In Portugal, Aveiro Hotel

“The end of our trip was great. We especially liked Obidos and our hotel. Our bikes worked well and were dependable. We really did enjoy the trip and we will return to Portugal in the future.” J. Palo – Oregon, USA – October 2023
“The trip was very good. The hotels and staff were all helpful. The hybrids were excellent. Pick up of goods/us all went smoothly. Good choice of hotels and a very interesting trip. Just too short! PS: The first day I discovered I had left my laptop in Porto. We had biked for about 45 minutes towards the next stop, but I turned around to go back to the hotel to get it. So my first day was not quite as relaxed as I’d hoped! Anyway at least it was a beautiful ride despite my memory loss… Thanks again for your help Maria. We’d like to do something like this again.” B. Jones – British Columbia, Canada – March 2023
“My wife and I really enjoyed our Porto to Lisbon bike tour- a great way to see Portugal’s coast and explore some great cities like Aveiro. Well organized, good equipment, and lovely hotels. We had good weather in mid-October.” T. Gainer – Portland, OR, USA – October 2021
“Amazing experience! My husband and I are back from our biking trip in Portugal with a suitcase full of wonderful memories. I would like to thank Cycling Country for the amazing organization that they provided to make our trip go as smoothly as it did. The bikes were very comfortable and in great condition (thank you for the special Dutch-style bikes – they were great!) and well equipped with emergency tools. They really thought of everything we might need along the road. The “Ride with GPS” navigation was very easy to follow and had lots of interesting tips and useful information. Also the hotels were all very nice and in great locations. In addition, the support we received before and during the trip was first class. Above all, the scenery was fantastic and the trails very varied along the coast, through beautiful parks and interesting places. I highly recommend both the trip and Cycling Country as the organizers.” E. Brager – Bethesda, MA, USA – September 2021
“Self-guided Porto to Lisbon tour – Great experience and very well organized! The selection of cities/towns and routes through Portugal’s central coast is varied and interesting. The route was not very challenging (mostly flat) and great for those who want a laid back ride, and kept us off main roads ( love not having to negotiate much car traffic!). Cycling Country was reliable, friendly and accommodating with good attention to detail. Hotels were solid, with some nice touches, like a few with spa amenities. We were especially grateful for their help with finding places for Covid tests for our return flight to the US. Our flight got canceled and they graciously made accommodations for us, much appreciated!” T. Eggers – Piedmont, CA, USA – July 2021

Colourful fishermen's houses in Costa Nova

About 250 kilometers of cycling await you on this journey, divided into six daily stages. After exploring Porto on the arrival day, you'll head towards the Atlantic coast and Furadouro, crossing the Douro River. On Day 2, you'll first cycle through the São Jacinto Nature Reserve before taking a ferry to the lagoon city of Aveiro.

Ahead of you await expansive beaches, picturesque coves, and breathtaking cliffs. As you journey through Praia de Mira and Figueira da Foz, you'll arrive at the architecturally enchanting Sintra, your penultimate overnight stop in Cascais. The waterfront promenade and the historic old town of this charming fishing village beckon you to leisurely wander and explore. On the last leg of your journey, you'll pass by the Belem Tower before reaching your destination in Lisbon.

  • The lagoon city of Aveiro:  The university city is often referred to as the Venice of Portugal. It's no wonder! Situated amidst a lagoon, Aveiro is crisscrossed by numerous canals, offering the opportunity to take a ride on a Moliceiros boat. In addition to a thriving trade, salt harvesting is also part of the city's history – be sure to look out for the salt pans in the surrounding area.
  • The charm of the Portuguese Atlantic coast:  Portugal is considered one of the sunniest corners of Europe, ensuring a rewarding vacation, almost all year round. Along your route, you'll discover numerous fishing villages that have a unique charm. The picturesque Cabo Mondego lighthouse is just one of the many attractions along the coast.
  • Tradition and the contemporary in Lisbon:  The city on the Tagus River with the widely visible reddish suspension bridge will enchant you in no time. Lisbon was built on seven hills, so you'll have to tackle some slopes – or use the city's elevators (Ascensores). You'll have a magnificent view from Castelo de São Jorge and Miradouro da Graça. Be sure to take a ride on tram line 28, as it passes by numerous points of interest.

When planning our routes, our team of experts places a strong emphasis on using well-marked bike paths or less-traveled secondary roads. The individual stages are designed to be of manageable length, typically spanning from 35 to 45 kilometers, and you may encounter occasional hilly terrain. So, saddle up, and let us handle the rest for you. Your hosts will be present every day to take care of your luggage, which we will transport on your behalf. You will receive a comprehensive information package that includes everything from travel documents to GPS data. And in case you ever require assistance, your dedicated point of contact is just a phone call away.

Whether on the mainland or on the flower island of Madeira , the mild climate is ideal for cycling holidays in Portugal . Explore the destination and start planning your next tour in your mind.

Accommodation, Hotel 4 stars: Moliceiro Hotel or Hotel 5 stars: MS Collection Aveiro - Palacete de Valdemouro (included in premium option)

On this route of 40km, you shall know the city of Ílhavo, famous for the manufacture of porcelain, Vista Alegre. With over 200 years of tradition as well, you can observe the fantastic scenery of the famous Costa Nova do Prado, where the beaches are intertwined with the rural, creating a unique environment where there is the opportunity to view the famous haystack houses on the waterfront, easily recognizable by the paintings on vertical colored bands. Hotel 4 * Maçarico Hotel or upgrade to superior room in "Premium" option

You will be pleased to meet the hidden and beautiful barrinha lagoon, also "fed" by the Ria de Aveiro. The adventure follows the famous pine forest inserted in the dunes, where the aroma of the trees combines with the sea breeze, sea area that is quite exploited by sailing boats and windsurfing. Coming finally to the "Queen of the Silver Coast," Figueira da Foz, famous for its long beaches, where the beautiful River Mondego flows. Accommodation, Hotel 4 stars: Sweet Atlantic Hotel or upgrade to superior room in "Premium" option

This amazing cycling trip starts alongside the Atlantic Ocean in Figueira da Foz, a city in the center of Portugal, located in the district of Coimbra. Here you can enjoy one of the best beaches in Portugal since this city is known as the "Queen of the Portuguese beaches". In the middle of your journey you will get to Pedrogão. The citizens of this region have always been dedicated to agriculture and fishing, implementing traditional means known as "Xávega", a brand image that still persists. You will eventually get to your final destination São Pedro de Moel, surrounded by extensive areas of pine forests. This little town offers various points of leisure and communion with nature. A particular note is the famous "Volta dos Sete": a course of approximately 7 km, which combines sea, woods and beach, with pure forest, parks, fountains and streams. The typical dishes that stand out are the: "Vidreiro" soup, Cod soup and Rabbit stew. Accommodations Hotel 4 * Hotel Mar e Sol or upgrade to superior room in "Premium" option

Heading towards Nazaré, a beautiful and quiet seaside town, with a breathtaking view from the top of a big cliff, the ride today will be of shorter distance. Nowadays, the great attraction of this city are the waves and the surfing. This happens due to a submarine geomorphological phenomenon, "Cannon of Nazaré", that allows the formation of giant and perfect waves. It is the largest submerged gorge in Europe, with about 170 kilometres along the coast, which is 5000 meters deep. The Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara gave it worldwide visibility when, in 2011, he surfed the world's biggest wave. Hotel 4 *: Hotel Praia or upgrade to superior room in "Premium" option

Leaving Nazaré the next village is Óbidos. Without doubt this town is one of Portugal's most classic walled settlements and visitors can also enjoy amazing views of windmills, vineyards and surrounding farmlands. In the residential area below, narrow cobblestone streets are lined with whitewashed houses, supporting terracotta roofs. Every year the city organizes two important events, the first one is a traditional 'Medieval Market', where the castle and the surrounding town recreate the spirit of medieval Europe. The second one is the Chocolate Festival. This one also attracts great interest from tourists, amazed by the real-life chocolate sculptures. São Martinho do Porto is the city of passage today. This region constituted by the "Serra da Pescaria" and by the "Bouro" mountain. In previous geological times they formed a single island. When it was divided it gave rise to the bay of São Martinho do Porto. São Martinho do Porto was even considered the best beach to go with the family in the guide of 2015 beaches of eDreams. Hotel 4 stars: Josefa de Óbidos or Hotel 4 *: Hotel real de Óbidos (included in premium option)

Returning to the coastal area, you will ride towards the city of Peniche. The city was built on a rocky peninsula which is considered by geologists, a unique example of the Toarcian turnover during the worldwide Early Jurassic extinction. Peniche is known for its long beaches, which are popular for recreational activities and sports such as surfing, windsurfing, body boarding and kite surfing. These beaches are consistently windy, which allows for good surfing, with decent waves and supertubes. Berlengas islands, about 10 kilometres (6 mi) offshore from the peninsula, are part of the municipality. They form one of the world's first nature reserves. You will also be able to make a stop at "Lagoa de Óbidos", which is a lagoon that extends between the municipalities of Óbidos and Caldas da Rainha. It is a natural barrier that separate the Atlantic Ocean and marine biome from the river ecosystem of "Foz do Arelho" formed by lateral dunes. Hotel 3 *: Star Inn Peniche or Hotel 4 *: MH Peniche (included in premium option)

Leaving Peniche but continuing along the coast the next destination is Ericeira. Ericeira is a civil parish and seaside resort/fishing community on the western coast of Portugal, in the municipality of Mafra, about 35 kilometres (22 mi) northwest of the capital, Lisbon. Ericeira was a popular summer retreat for many of Lisbon's families in the 1940s and 1950s. Today, it is a popular destination for local and visiting tourists, as well as surfers from around the world. Ericeira is also keen on its musical culture. The local philharmonic, currently named Filarmónica Cultural Ericeira, has existed since 1849 and pursues a path of success in this villages's musical heritage with a permanent free musical school for all who love this type of culture. The beach of Santa Cruz it´s the place of passage during this day, and it is a place that is conducive to a large part of wave sports. Every year there is the "Ocean Spirit" festival of wave sports where international competitions of various kinds are held. Hotel 4 *: Vila Galé Ericeira or upgrade to superior room in "Premium" option

On this day, the route leaves the coast and goes to the city of Sintra. This place is known for its many XIXth-century Romantic architectural monuments, which has resulted in Sintra's classification by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It has become a major tourist center, visited by many one day-travellers who travel from the capital Lisbon. In addition to the Sintra Mountains and Sintra-Cascais Nature Park, the parishes of the town of Sintra are places with royal retreats, estates, castles and other buildings, including the medievil Castelo dos Mouros, the Pena National Palace and the Sintra National Palace. Hotel 4 *: Sintra Boutique Hotel Hotel 5 stars: Tivoli Palácio de Seteais Sintra Hotel - The Leading Hotels of the World (included in premium option)

Continuing through the center, this cycling tour ends at the coastal city of Cascais. Situated west of Lisbon it is a cosmopolitan suburb of the Portuguese capital and one of the richest municipalities in Portugal. The former fishing village gained fame as a resort for Portugal's royal family in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Nowadays, it is a popular vacation spot for both Portuguese and foreign tourists. Cascais is surrounded by popular beaches such as "Praia do Guincho" to the west, and the lush Sintra mountains to the north. Some of its shoreline has cliffs, attracting tourists who come for the panoramic views of the sea and other natural sights. It is also becoming a popular golf destination, with over 10 golf courses nearby. The Sintra – Cascais Natural Park it´s a mandatory place to visit and admire, because it is one of the 13 Natural Parks of Portugal, it includes the "Serra de Sintra" and extends all the way to the coast. Hotel 4 stars: Pestana Cascais or Hotel 5 *: Hotel Cidadela Cascais (included in premium option)

porto to lisbon bike tour

What People Are Saying

My wife and I did the 7 day self guided Porto to Lisbon reduced route with Top Bike Tours Portugal the first week of Ocrtober 2022. I must give Sergio and his team a ten out of ten on all aspects of our trip. The orientation in Porto on day 1 was thorough, the equipment excellent and we were treated to a guided walk through Porto followed by a complimentary Port wine tour/tasting. At the start of our trip Miguel guided us out of Porto and ensured that we were familar with the GPS and tour literature that was provided. It was so nice to be led out of the busy city and start our self guided trip on a lovely seaside path on the south side of the Douro river. The whole trip was outstanding. The coast was beautiful and most of our biking was on excellent bike paths or quiet backroads. About 10% of the trip was on busier roads with good shoulders, never a problem. The hotels that they booked us into were all excellent, four star or boutique. Breakfasts were very good and our baggage was always waiting at our evening destination. Every night Sergio checked in to ensure that all was going well. We were fortunate that the weather was perfect for the whole trip. On our last day we were picked up in Obidos and transported to the hotel that we had booked in Lisbon. We booked with Top Bike Tours because they are a local Portuguese based company and I am so happy that we did so. They are very professional, so helpful and proud to share the beauty of their country to us. All of their team are avid bikers and such nice people. You cannot go wrong with this outfit. ... I did a week long solo bike ride in northern Portugal and then a 10 day solo bike ride from Porto to Lisbon. The company provided excellent support. They texted often to make sure things were going OK. When I had questions (sent via WhatsApp), they provided short videos to show me what to do. The tools they provided me were used to fix two flat tires. The GPSes and phone app were used each day (it took me a couple of days to figure out the GPS). The paper maps were not used as they were not needed. The luggage transport worked just fine. I would use this company again. But, next time, I will look for cheaper trips as I do not need 4 and 5 star hotels. Portugal has way too many streets with cobblestones (hard on my knees). The routes had more turns than I wanted, so spent lots of time looking at the GPS (to keep on the route) instead of at the scenery. The route visited more beaches than I needed. ... Agency prepared for us 11 days self-guided bicycle tour from Porto to Cascais. Communication with Sergio was before and during the tour prompt and problems solving. Selection and preparation of e-bikes was very good and according to our wishes. Chosen hotels were suitable, sometimes out of center, sometimes without proper bike storage. Some parts of the routes were uncomfortable and too challenging for us. In genreal it was an excellent journey, with remarkable landscape and very pleasant local people. ... The Porto to Lisbon biking holiday is a delightful tour linking the two main cities in Portugal and visiting several main cultural spots while cycling through the countryside and along scenic coastal trails. On the right bank of the broad Tagus River estuary, the capital of Portugal graciously reclines over rolling hills. Exceptional natural light that has inspired artists, writers, photographers and filmmakers through the ag es, brightly coloured buildings straddling the slopes, striking ochre roofs, tile-covered building facades and narrow twisting alleys of the medieval districts, all endow Lisbon with the unique atmosphere of a city perched somewhere on the line that marks the differences between the cultures of the European north and the Mediterranean south.

Day 8: Departure or Extension

All distances are approximate. Due to circumstances beyond control, weather conditions or provisions issued by local authorities, the itinerary may be subject to some changes before and/or during your holiday. For example, along the way you may find temporary deviations/detours caused by roadwork. In this case, please follow the directions posted on site.

Day 1: Porto | UNESCO World Heritage city, world-famous for Port Wine You will be met upon arrival at Porto airport and taken to your hotel in the centre of Porto from where you can explore the city. Walk down to the riverside, into the medieval quarter of the Ribeira. Porto is a World Heritage city, a historic jewel with more than 150 listed monuments. Cycle leisurely along the riverbank, past the famous Eiffel bridge and across to the Port Wine lodges that rise uphill from the southern bank of the river Douro. That evening, we suggest you enjoy dinner in one of the many fine restaurants for whichPorto is famous.

Day 3: Furadouro to Aveiro | Art Nouveau and colorful Moliceiro boats at the Portuguese “Venice” If you have time, take a trip on a Moliceiro, the brightly coloured hand painted wooden boats used for gathering seaweed, along the canals for which Aveiro is named Portuguese Venice. Ashore, tickle your taste buds and join a workshop to make a typical Aveiro pastry. Do not fail to visit the salt pans and enjoy the wonderfully soothing properties of sea salt as you soak your feet in small tubs. YYour bike tour for today is a pleasant ride along the Aveiro Ria

Day 4: Aveiro to Figueira da Foz | A unique blend between the cosmopolitanism inherited from the Belle Époque and extensive beaches of soft white sand Leave enchanting Aveiro for Figueira da Foz, cycling along the canal and through green fields until you reach Mira where you will be dazzled by the golden effect of the sunshine on the sand, the sea, the vegetation, and the brightly contrasting colors of the landscape. Visit Praia de Mira fishing village with the typical colourful wooden houses they call palheiros. Treat yourself to one of the fresh fish gastronomic specialties for which Mira is famous. At this point, a shared transfer is included to Figueira da Foz, the ideal place to stop for the night.

Day 5: Figueira da Foz to São Pedro de Moel | Picturesque village and a small sea resort This stage takes you along the Portuguese silver coast and through the Pinhal de Leiria, the great pine forest planted in the 15th century to supply the wood for the caravels on which the Portuguese discoverers sailed the seven seas. The trail follows a cycling path alongside the Estrada Atlântica (Atlantic Road) to São Pedro de Moel, an elegant beach resort that nestles in a forest clearing. Famous for surfing, the splendid beach is bordered to the north by steep rocks and to the south by a small stream. Try fishing off the rocks near the lighthouse where the cliffs attract several species of tasty fish, especially sea bass and bream.

Day 6:São Pedro de Moel to Óbidos | Charming, small, fortified town with narrow streets and white-washed houses Today takes you to two towns beloved by visitors to Portugal – Nazaré and Óbidos. Nazaré, possibly the most famous fishing town in Portugal, also famous for its beautiful beach, is unique in many ways. Its atmosphere of times gone by, contentment and long-standing traditions make it a special place to visit. The narrow, gaily painted wooden fishing boats with their high, curved bows, are reminiscent of the Phoenecians who first visited the area. Another unique tradition are the seven-layered skirts that the fisherwomen still wear, their wooden clogs and predominantly black headscarves. At the top of the high cliff overlooking the beach, a small village marks the birthplace of Nazaré and the legend of a knight saved by the Virgin Mary. The view out to sea is breathtaking. Óbidos, your destination of the day, is a charming, small, fortified town that makes one think of a medieval film set. The town has been carefully preserved and its inhabitants take pride in maintaining the architectural style from ages past, its monuments, narrow winding streets and white-washed houses with windows and terraces full of flowers. The walls covered with 18th century blue tiles inside the southern gate that acts as the main entrance are especially impressive

Day 7: Lisbon | The stunning capital city of Portugal, and one of the most charismatic and vibrant cities of Europe After checking out from your hotel in Óbidos, return your bikes at the hotel. A transfer will take you to your hotel in Lisbon where, after checking in, you will have plenty of free time to explore the city. Lisbon is a romantic city open to the sea that has always shaped its destiny. Start with two landmark monuments near each other on banks of the Tagus: the Belem Tower and the Jeronimos Monastery. Both World Heritage Sites are noted for the beauty of the Manueline architecture. Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest quarter, is not to be missed. Sprawling over the southeastern slope of the hill crowned by São Jorge Castle, the picturesque neighborhood is composed of a maze of narrow streets, winding alleyways, and steep flights of steps. Bairro Alto, a picturesque working-class quarter dating from the 16th century, has traditionally been the bohemian haunt of artists and writers. Its streets are quiet during the day but at night they are transformed by the city’s vibrant nightlife. Behind the colorful and graffiti-covered façades you will find a variety of traditional and international restaurants, tourist-packed Fado Houses, and a multitude of bars and shops that stay open until late at night

"This is a fabulous trip!"

Trish Dooley

"Great trip with various views, nature and experiences. Very nice Portuguese people."

Ela Rodenburg

"I really appreciated the care and attention from staff, and the decent equipment. For the most part, hotels were good to excellent..very welcome after a day in the saddle."

Helen Edwards-davis

"A super well-organised self-guided cycle trip along the Silver Coast, which incorporated some great scenery inland of forests and lakes as well as some stunning coastal scenery."

Colin Summers

"Friendly, very helpful, and willing to do that bit extra to ensure that we had a great holiday. Miguel, who gave us our briefing, was superb, and the girls in the office were very helpful when we realised that we had left our own cycle helmet behind. Thank you!"

Peter Larkin

"We really enjoyed this trip and it exceeded all our expectations.  Will certainly go on another A2Z cycling trip."

Karen Barratt

"We had a fantastic week in Portugal well organized by A2Z. Starting and ending with a night in Porto we enjoyed a self-guided tour from Porto to Óbidos. During this tour we got the opportunity to see the countryside, in "slow motion", to go for a swim at some of the beaches when we felt for it and to enjoy a lot of good food. The accommodations were all very nice."

Stein Ingebrigtsen | Norway

"A fantastic experience. We got to visit both large coastal towns, but also got to experience small uncommercial villages where you could appreciate Portuguese traditions. People were friendly and helpful, and the cycle paths were great. The coastline is amazing!"

Vanessa Rivers | UK

"A2Z planned a wonderful cycling trip for a group of 5 of us from Porto to Óbidos and altered the route to include an extra day in Aveiro.  All accommodations were great and our stay at Casas do Colmeal was a wonderful surprise. Having our route on Ride with GPS worked so well since we could hear turn by turn directions as we road.  We especially appreciated the extra help from A2Z when problems arose. The bicycles were in excellent shape but we needed one changed as it was a bit too large, a wheel changed that was bent in a fall, and extra help when one person was unfortunately hit by a car and unable to ride for the rest of our trip. A2Z helped with medical arrangements and transfers for that person for the rest of the trip.  Absolutely fabulous people to work with."

Pam Cissik | USA

"Perfect organization, beautiful views, I sincerely recommend it."

Ratajczak Marek | Poland

"Que es la empresa y la gente que tienen que contratar si quieren recorrer portugal y estar tranquilos que todo va a salir bien."

Carlos Maizlisz | Argentina

"A2Z delivers! We will be back."

José Ribas | USA

"Well organised and efficient from start to finish."

Peter Maltz | UK

""This was a great holiday with beautiful scenery and thanks to the app we could cycle and stop to swim or eat and drink whenever it suited us knowing exactly what lay ahead."

Simon Barker | UK

"Well organized, fine lodging overall and helpful representatives.  The Porto to Lisbon itinerary is great filled with wonderful landscapes and towns.  Ride with GPS made it easy."

Bruno Orsini | Canada

"Excellent itinerary, accommodation and support throughout the whole trip - highly recommended."

Kevin Power | UK

"That A2Z provide a truly bespoke service and are there for you when unplanned things happen and you need a fast response and a flexible approach."

Simon Forrester | UK

"An enjoyable ride with good equipment, a range of very good hotels but be prepared for some hill climbs."

Jenny and Steve Fuge | Australia

"This trip is hard work but worth it! If you are doubt about being fit enough, consider the E-bike option!"

Camilla Newton | UK

"A2Z gave us a good biking experience in Portugal on their rout Porto-Lisboa! The tour was well organized from A2Z’s side!"

Anton Gjørven | Norway

"We rode the Hybrid bikes from Porto to Óbidos with a2z travel in October. For the price you could not get a better tour. Breakfast, accommodation, bike rental,gps, panniers, cell phone and bike computers were all included. Most of the hotels and breakfasts were great and the bike route was very interesting along the ocean, through pine forests and fishing villages. The problems we had were dealt with promptly in particular assistance due to forest fires was outstanding! We would highly recommend this tour!"

Vivian Vandenhazel

"We enjoyed a self guided road bike tour from Porto to Obidos, into the direction of Lisbon with A2Z. Perfectly organized, on good Trek Carbon bikes we easily made 60 -100 km per day - because of the wind from the back and no mountains - spectacular views, comfortable hotels and very friendly support. Recommended!"

Bike Tour from Porto to Lisbon - Silver Coast of Portugal

Daily distance, daily altimetry.

We will meet you in our Porto bike shop to provide you with a detailed briefing for your tour, hand you over the GPS with preloaded tracks, detailed routebook and all the gear and support.

After the private briefing and bike fit, you can start riding south on the same day or the next day. The following days you will be riding south to Espinho, Aveiro, Figueira da Foz, Óbidos, Peniche and Sintra, arriving in Lisbon, where you'll drop off your bikes at our Lisbon warehouse and end your adventure with a high note on Portugal's capital.

llr santiago 20 1920x1080[1]

Day 0: Meeting at our warehouse in Porto

Private briefing, bike fit and delivery of bikes and gear for the tour at our Porto bike station;

Day 1: Porto - Espinho (30km)

Your ride will start right after you cross the D. Luis I metal bridge to the Douro south bank, where you will have amazing views over Porto and the Ribeira area. Soon you will reach Afurada, a fishermen’s village between Douro and the Atlantic. From here you will cycle mostly through bike lanes along the coast and heading south. At Miramar you can see the impressive Senhor da Pedra chapel built on the ocean rocks. Near Espinho we suggest a 1 km walk over a wooden footbridge. Do NOT cycle here, walk for 15 minutes and appreciate the sand dunes, a small brook and the Atlantic Ocean.

Night in three star hotel in Espinho;

Day 2: Espinho - Aveiro (63km);

Exiting Espinho and heading south along the coast you will cycle on a footbridge (this one you can cycle) and pass by an abandoned military air base. Near Esmoriz you will cross the urban park, Buçaquinho, and then continue along the Pine Tree Forest, always on a bike lane until Furadouro beach. Further, using bike lanes and macadame trails, you will reach Torreira beach, and then the seven old docks where you can spot the traditional boats, called “Moliceiros”, painted in their typical lively colours. Back on the road you will cross a bridge and reach Torreira where the only alternative is to ride on the shared national road to São Jacinto. Once in São Jacinto you will have to take the  ferry boat to Forte da Barra and from there ride to your hotel for the night in the city of Aveiro.

Night in three star hotel in Aveiro;

Day 3: Aveiro - Praia de Mira (40km)

Today you'll ride inland, parallel to the Aveiro Lagoon and going south to Costa Nova using the recently built bike lane. After Praia da Vagueira it is best to cycle along the macadam trail and passing Praia do Areão you will be back on a bike lane along a Pine Tree forest. First in asphalt, then in gravel, then in asphalt again until you reach Lagoa de Mira, a beautiful and well preserved lagoon surrounded by a forested area.  Further ahead you will reach Praia de Mira, your final destination. Relax, go to the beach or just take a funny tour at the inside lake with a rented pedal boat.

Night in three star hotel in Praia de Mira;

Day 4: Praia de Mira - Figueira da Foz (58km);

Today's ride leads you through a long section of forest road with little or no traffic almost all the way, this will definitely be an introspective ride surrounded by pine trees and sand for a few kilometers. After visiting Praia da Tocha you will pass near two beautiful lagoons, one of them hidden behind the endemic vegetation. After coming down to the ocean again and visit Praia de Quiaios, you will pedal the hardest climb of the day: a hilly gravel road (650 meters long) that will take you through an abandoned quarry of cement stone extraction. This is an amazing natural open air museum, showing you several rock types and geological formations from the Miocene age. After the lighthouse, you will start to see the city Figueira-da-Foz, your final destination for the day.

Night in three star hotel in Figueira da Foz;

Day 5: Figueira da Foz - São Pedro de Moel (62km)

Start your day riding along the Mondego River and its rice fields, with a visit to Montemor-o-Velho’s ancient castle. Crossing the Mondego River and heading south, you will ride through farming areas always using backroads. Right before the only big climb of the day, the route will take you near the abandoned Seiça Monastery. After Marinha das Ondas you will pass beneath the N109 road and enter on the Leiria National Pine Tree forest where there's you'll ride the longest bike lane in Portugal, 70 km long, which today will take you to Lagoa de Ervedeira, an ancient  lagoon surrounded by forest, and finally to Praia do Pedrogão. The next suggested stop will be Praia da Vieira and then São Pedro de Moel, a traditional summer village where your hotel is located. Enjoy here the relaxed atmosphere, the typical architecture of the coastal homes and the public seaside pool of the 1930's to 1960's and the beach.

Night in three star hotel in São Pedro de Moel;

Day 6: São Pedro de Moel - Óbidos (67km);

Leaving São Pedro de Moel you will ride the cycle path heading south to Sitio da Nazaré and passing the entrances to the beaches of Pedra do Ouro, Vale de Paredes, Vale Furado and Praia do Norte, the famous beach where in 2012 the Hawaiian Garrett McNamara broke the world record for the biggest wave ever surfed, with 30 meters height. When you reach Sítio da Nazaré, a village perched on top of the cliffs that sit on the northern edge of the Nazaré beach and that has an amazing view over Nazaré, the beach and the ocean. This section will take you along the top edge of two small sierras giving you great perspectives over the Atlantic Ocean. After exiting Nazaré you will have to face 2 hilly sections. This first will take up from the rice fields and along the the ocean to the old windmill. After going down you will pass by the amazing and sui generis São Martinho do Porto bay, an ocean lagoon cloistered by cliffs. Then, the second hill which is not as high as the first one, will lead you to Foz do Arelho beach and amazing Óbidos lagoon, where you will cycle along the trails that surround it. From the Lagoon you'll have to head up to the medieval village of Óbidos where your hotel is located and where you can enjoy the medieval atmosphere of this beautifully preserved fortified village.

Night in three star hotel in Óbidos;

Day 7: Óbidos - Peniche (52km);

Leaving Óbidos you will cycle along the lagoon gravel trails. Enjoy this flat ride with low traffic along this beautiful lagoon that will take you to Bom Sucesso beach. Afterwards you will have to pedal the only hilly road of this section, going past a stone quarry and then leading you to Praia d’El Rei beach resort. After that you will ride on a gravel trail along the farming areas close to the ocean before reaching Baleal beach and its little and unique islet. Your destination is Peniche, where your hotel is locate and we suggest you to take some free time to enjoy the city and fort, not forgetting to try the fresh fish and seafood of this coast.

Night in three star hotel in Peniche;

Day 8: Peniche - Ericeira (73km);

Leaving Peniche you will ride along the south coast parallel to the ocean in most probably your toughest day on the bike. You will go past many beaches such as Praia da Consolação, Praia do Paimogo with its old fortress and the famous Areia Branca beach. You will quickly realize that this area is most infamous by its successive up and downhill sections taking you across the existing valleys and beaches of this part of the coast. In Praia de Porto Dinheiro take time to enjoy the dinosaurs tracks and history. Climbing from that beach you will reach the next point, the famous thermal village of Vimeiro. From here you will pedal along a private road parallel to the Alcabrichel River. Next, from Praia de Porto Novo there is a bike lane that takes you to Santa Cruz. From Santa Cruz enjoy the cliffside roads taking you to Praia Azul. At this point, this track takes you inland as there are no Atlantic roads or just too much traffic at N247. This way you can enjoy the backroads small sierras and valley villages on your way to Praia de São Lourenço, a river mouth and cliffy beach. Right before Ericeira you will spot Ribeira d’ilhas, a well known beach for surf competitions. From here there is a bike lane towards Ericeira, where your hotel is located. After the ride take some time to walk around the village

Night in three star hotel in Ericeira;

Day 9: Ericeira - Sintra (43km);

As the previous day, today will be quite a hilly ride thanks to the many valleys and rivers of the coast, often forcing you to go up and down to the beaches. Fortunately they are all worth to visit. Right after exiting Ericeira you will pass by the Lizandro’s river mouth and beach. Then you will take N247, a busy road, to tackle the first climb of the day. Reaching the village of Baleia, you will turn right towards the beautiful São Julião beach and its cliffs. Prepare for the steep climb as you exit São Julião and head towards Magoito beach, a long sandy beach below the high cliffs and with a great view over the Roca Cape, the westernmost point of continental Europe. Cross the beach trail that will lead you to the top of the cliff and enjoy the trails and roads that will take you to Praia da Aguda and then to Azenhas do Mar, an old and traditional village built on the rocky cliffs, and one of the landmarks of the Sintra region. From here you will head into the historical village of Sintra, that will be the last climbing section of the tour. When you reach the charming village centre of Sintra, your hotel is just a few meters away from it. Take the rest of the day to visit and explore the village history and it’s landmarks, it's well worth it!

Night in three star hotel in Sintra;

Day 10: Sintra - Lisbon (67km);

Option to take our transfer to Lisbon or ride to our Lisbon warehouse. The latter option is only advisable for experienced cyclists that are at ease with riding in busy shared roads. If you choose to ride to Lisbon, you'll start your day by riding down to Colares along the tram line that takes beachgoers to Praia das Maças. This road takes you along the Sintra Natural Park first to Colares and then up a 5km climb to Aldeia da Serra and the detour to Roca Cape. From here you'll have a long downhill section with the most beautiful views of the coast and Guincho Beach. From Guincho you'll be oceanside all the way to Lisbon. This 40km ocean road connects Guincho, goes through the urban costal towns of Cascais, Estoril and Oeiras, entering Lisbon in the monuments area of Belém, where you can admire the Tower and the Jerónimo's Monastery. You'll then ride past the central riverside area of Cais do Sodré and Baixa with great views of the city and the Tagus River. Once you're past the central area it's just a short ride to the new area of Parque das Nações where you'll drop your bikes at our warehouse.

Porto to Lisbon Bike Tour

Hotel & bike • 7 nights, visiting: portugal, why we love this tour.

Vibrant cities of Porto and Lisbon

Sandy beaches, delightful towns and spectacular cliffs

Moderate cycling through rolling hills with a few steeper ascents

Cycle through rolling hills along the west coast of Portugal between two of Europe's most amazing cities on our Porto to Lisbon Bike Tour. Pedalling south from beautiful Porto, you’ll follow the shoreline on scenic coastal trails beside pristine beaches. You'll stop to take in views of spectacular cliffs, explore delightful towns or simply bask under the warm sun on the beach.

Along the way, you'll discover the pretty canals and vast saltpans of Aveiro, spend time bird-watching at São Jacinto Dunes Natural Reserve and explore the restaurants, decorative alleys and cafes of the coastal city of Figueira da Foz.

Your tour ends in Lisbon, one of the most charming European capitals, with its sloped streets, winding alleyways and buildings with brightly painted facades. Exploring the city during the golden hour is a visually mesmerising experience - we recommend making your way to one of the classic miradouros (viewpoints) as the sun sets.

We also offer an 11 night version of this tour - speak to our team to find out more.

The EuroVelo 1 – Porto to Lisbon is a bike tour inspired by the EuroVelo Atlantic Coast. It is a scenic and challenging route that covers approximately 495 km and offers dazzling views of the Atlantic Ocean, the countryside, and some of the most iconic cities in Portugal.

Before we dive into the tour, let’s understand what is EuroVelo…

The EuroVelo Atlantic Coast

The EuroVelo Atlantic Coast Route is a long-distance cycling route that runs along the Atlantic coast of Europe, including Portugal. This route, also known as EV1, runs for over 4,500 kilometers, beginning in the north of Scotland and ending in Caminha, Portugal.

In Portugal, the route runs from north to south, starting at the Spanish border near Vila Nova de Cerveira and ending in Vila Real Santo Antonio in the Algarve region. It passes through several historic towns and villages, including Porto, Aveiro, and Lisbon, as well as beautiful natural landscapes such as the Ria Formosa Natural Park, the Serra de Sintra, Arrabida Natural Park, and the Costa Vicentina Natural Park.

The route is primarily on dedicated bike paths and quiet roads and is suitable for experienced and adventurous cyclists. It offers a unique opportunity to explore the history, culture, and natural beauty of each country.

The EuroVelo Atlantic Coast Route is part of the EuroVelo network of long-distance cycling routes, which covers the whole of Europe and is promoted by the European Cyclists’ Federation.

The EuroVelo 1 – Porto to Lisbon

The EuroVelo 1 – Porto to Lisbon is a unique and unforgettable experience that combines challenging cycling, beautiful scenery, and cultural discovery. Inspired by The EuroVelo Atlantic Coast Route, it offers varied terrains including hilly sections, flat sections along the coastline, and some mountainous areas.

This tour is suitable for experienced cyclists and requires good physical fitness. It is recommended that you bring proper equipment and supplies, such as a reliable bicycle, helmet, water, and some snacks to maintain the tour.

Although the course is well-signposted, it is essential to research the route, check weather conditions, and be aware of local regulations and road safety rules before embarking on the tour.

During the tour, you will experience the rich cultural heritage of Porto, which is also the starting point of this EuroVelo 1 – Porto to Lisbon tour. Then, you will cycle through the famous Ria de Aveiro, exploring the stunning beaches of Figueira da Foz, Nazare, and Peniche, visiting the medieval town of Obidos, and finally, ending the trip in the vibrant city of Lisbon.

How to get there

The EuroVelo 1 – Porto to Lisbon is not a loop tour. Yet, it can be done perfectly in a reverse way. However, southward is recommended than the other way around as the strong wind mostly comes from the north.

Getting to the starting point of this trip is quite simple. The easiest way from Lisbon or Porto is by train. Check  here  for more about the rules for the transport of bikes on trains in Portugal.

Nevertheless, it also depends on where you are coming from. If you come by bus, bear in mind, the rule to bring a bicycle on a bus varies, depending on each company.

If you desire an extended adventure, The EuroVelo 1 – Northern Portugal or The EuroVelo 1 – Costa Vicentina tour are the best options. Combine it with The EuroVelo 1 – Porto to Lisbon tour, you can plan more than two weeks of exploration.

The sections we mentioned below are our suggestions. The tour is adaptable, depending on your needs: timetable, interest, and fitness level. For instance, we would do it easily in two weeks as Luís would like to sketch each region with time.

Porto to Aveiro

The route from Porto to Aveiro follows the coastline for most of the way, offering scenic views of the Atlantic Ocean and passing through charming towns and villages along the way. There are some sections with gentle hills, but overall the terrain is not very challenging. The route is mostly on dedicated bike paths or quiet roads, making it a safe and enjoyable ride.

If you are lucky with the weather, you will see the stunning Capela do Senhor da Pedra, the oceanfront chapel built on rocks offering picturesque views of the beach, water & sunsets at the end of Vila Nova de Gaia hub.

As you roll to Cortegaça village, seize a little detour to admire its unique architectural style and rich cultural heritage, Santa Marinha of Cortegaça Church.

EuroVelo 1 - Porto to Lisbon

In Ovar, you can choose which way to proceed with your venture:

  • Keep following the coastline and cross by ferry at Sao Jacinto (€3,10/person). Note that you don’t need to pay anything for the bicycle. Check here to see the update.
  • If you decide to save some cash, you can bike inland through occasional stretches of industrial areas until Aveiro.

Aveiro to Praia de Mira

Although Aveiro is located a bit far from the coastline, it is worth the 10 kilometers of detour (depending on where you stay). Firstly, it is known for its picturesque canals, similar to those of Venice in Italy, which offer a unique and charming landscape for cycling along. Secondly, Aveiro is a city rich in history and culture, with numerous museums and cultural centers to explore.

The city also has a lively atmosphere, with plenty of cafes, restaurants, and bars to enjoy. With its combination of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and lively atmosphere, Aveiro is a great place for a memorable and diverse cycling experience.

Whether you skip Aveiro or not, make sure not to miss the colorful houses in Costa Nova. From here, you will continue the journey of The EuroVelo 1 – Porto to Lisbon to Praia de Mira on a bicycle path on a quiet road that is relatively flat and easy to navigate.

Praia de Mira to Figueira de Foz

Praia de Mira is a pleasant overnight spot because of its gorgeous natural beauty and peaceful surroundings. The beach is a long sandy stretch with crystal clear waters and offers a great place to relax after a day of cycling. There are also several accommodation options available in the area, including camping sites and local guesthouses, making it a convenient and affordable place to spend the night.

From here, The The EuroVelo 1 – Porto to Lisbon will lead you to Figueira de Foz through a pretty straightforward. However, as per our local friend, for the first 6 kilometers, the road is pretty damaged. Although the path is flat, due to the potholes make it unpleasant to pedal through. He suggested us to did a bit of detour through a lovely Lake Mira and one of the biggest rice fields in Portugal, Bom Sucesso. Whichever you choose, both ways are flat and calm roads.

As you are pedaling away from Quiaios, the route will guide you back to the coast through a few hilly cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean until the destination of the day, Figueira de Foz.

Figueira de Foz to Nazaré

Figueira da Foz is a great place for a bike tourer to stop overnight because it offers a range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly hostels to luxurious beachfront hotels. Not only that, in contrast with Praia de Mira, Figueira de Foz offers a vibrant nightlife that makes The EuroVelo 1 – Porto to Lisbon tour diverse.

As you proceed with the journey, be aware of the heavy traffic as you leave Figueira de Foz. In the first kilometers of this stretch, the route is relatively flat and runs through sandy beaches and coastal towns. After a while, the path includes more hills and scenic views of the coastline and countryside. The road surface is generally good, with well-maintained bike paths and quiet roads. Some sections may have steep inclines, which could challenge inexperienced cyclists, but there are also gentle slopes and descents to help you to recover.

Nazaré to Peniche

Nazaré is a town famous for the biggest wave on earth. However, the big wave is not happening all the time. So, do not expect you will see it. Nevertheless, it is popular for its stunning beaches and historical significance. For bike tourers, it can be a good place for an overnight stop since it has a variety of accommodations and restaurants or cafe options, ranging from budget-friendly to luxury ones, so there is something for everyone.

From Nazaré to Peniche, the terrain becomes a bit more challenging, with some rolling hills and a few steep climbs. However, the beautiful scenery and stunning ocean views make it all worth it. The route passes by several beautiful beaches, such as Praia do Norte, famous for its massive waves that attract surfers from all over the world. The terrain is generally well-maintained, with some paved roads and some dirt tracks.

In this part of The EuroVelo 1 – Porto to Lisbon you will ride for approximately 83 kilometers through one of the cutest medieval towns in Portugal, Óbidos.

Peniche to Assafora

One of the main attractions in Peniche is the Fort of Peniche, a former prison that was used during the dictatorship of António de Oliveira Salazar. Today, the fort serves as a museum and a cultural center, showcasing the town’s history and heritage.

Another highlight of Peniche is its beautiful beaches, including the Praia do Baleal and Praia da Consolação. These beaches are popular spots for surfing, with waves that attract surfers from all over the world. In addition to its natural beauty, Peniche is also famous for its seafood. The town is home to several excellent seafood restaurants, serving up the freshest catch of the day.

From here to Assafora village, the journey will be more demanding. With fewer kilometers than the previous day, you will climb more hills up to 1000 meters. The route initially follows a flat road along the coast before turning inland and starting to climb through forested hills toward the town of Lourinhã. The climb is gradual but sustained, and there are a few steeper sections. Once in Lourinhã, the route descends to the coast again and then follows a mix of quiet roads and cycle paths through agricultural land and small towns.

As the route approaches the town of Santa Cruz, the terrain becomes more challenging, with some steep climbs and descents as the route follows the cliffs along the coast. This section can be exposed to the wind and requires extra caution. After Santa Cruz, the route becomes flatter again and follows the coast through small towns and beaches until it reaches Assafora.

Overall, this section of the The EuroVelo 1 – Porto to Lisbon tour requires a moderate level of fitness and some cycling experience due to the hills and potentially challenging coastal sections. However, the stunning scenery and beautiful coastal towns make it well worth the effort.

Assafora to Lisbon

Assafora village is relatively untouched by tourism and offers a quiet and laid-back atmosphere, making it a great place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty after a demanding cycling day.

One of the main attractions in Assafora is Praia da Aguda, a stunning sandy beach that is popular with surfers and bodyboarders. The beach is surrounded by cliffs and rock formations, which create a unique and dramatic landscape. There are several other beaches nearby as well, including Praia da Samarra and Praia da Vigia, which are also great for surfing and sunbathing.

As you are here, it also means that you are a day ahead from the finishing line of The EuroVelo 1 – Porto to Lisbon tour! The terrain from Assafora to Lisbon is relatively hilly, with some steeper climbs as you are approaching Sintra – Cascais Natural Park. The route follows the coastline, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, and passes through several small towns and villages.

As the route approaches Lisbon, the terrain becomes flattish, following the banks of the Tagus River and passing by some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, and the The EuroVelo 1 – Porto to Lisbon tour is ending at the Ferry terminal, Cais do Sodre.

While the Caminho Portugués is traditionally walked by pilgrims, it is now possible to enjoy the route by bike. Starting in the historic capital city of Lisbon you will cycle through countryside towns to the lively Coimbra, and then continue on to the romantic Porto, located on the Douro River.
