The last light of the day shining within the windows of the pre-Roman palace in Iraq Al Amir © Sunny Fitzgerald / Lonely Planet

Jordan’s capital city of Amman is a destination in its own right, worthy of at least 48 hours of your time . It also makes an excellent base to explore a number of nearby attractions. Castles, rock climbing, cooking lessons, Roman ruins, hiking trails, handicraft workshops, and more are all within reach (and most within an hour or less!). Here’s some inspiration for a day’s escape from Amman.

A woman sits in one of two huge open window spaces in an ancient ruin; the blocks that make up the wall are massive, each dwarfing the woman.

1. Iraq Al Amir

Why go: With an ancient palace, caves and a women’s cooperative, this extra special day trip could easily be extended to an overnight.

What to see:  Iraq Al Amir translates to “Caves of the Prince,” so the series of 15 caves carved into the cliff across from the Iraq Al Amir Women’s Cooperative are a great place to start. Explore this cave system (accessible by a stone staircase from the paved road) that dates back to the Copper Age, and then return to the Women’s Co-op for a hands-on ceramics, weaving, paper making, or soap making workshop taught by local craftswomen . In the afternoon, take a stroll down to Qasr Al Abad and watch the light peek and play through the ruins of the pre-Roman palace.

Where to eat and drink:  The women of the Iraq Al Amir Women’s Cooperative prepare tasty, home-cooked, traditional meals upon request and can also arrange cooking lessons if you’d like to dine and learn.

How to get there:  Iraq Al Amir is just 30 minutes west of the centre of Amman by car, via Zahran St and Iraq Al Amir St.

Travel time: 30 minutes or so.

A woman in a green dress and straw hat stands on some ruins and looks over a vast and barren landscape of rolling hills.

Why go:  Spiritual sites, mosaic masterpieces and sweeping views are on the agenda for a day spent in and around Madaba .

What to see:  Visit Jordan Jewel Art & Mosaic en route to witness the work that goes into creating mosaics and support local artists with disabilities. Then stop by Mt Nebo , stand in the spot said to be where Moses saw the Promised Land, and admire the mosaics inside the hilltop basilica. Continue on to see a massive mosaic and the oldest map of Palestine on the floor of the St George Church in Madaba. If you’re up for a longer drive, take the scenic route along the King’s Highway from Madaba to the C astle of Herod the Grea t in Mukawir and trek up in time to catch sunset over the Dead Sea before returning to Amman.

Read more: Eight unmissable adventures in Jordan

A lovely mosaic with braided border that features people, trees and various animals, such as zebras, ostriches, camels, donkeys and lions.

Where to eat and drink:  For a quick and cheap bite, grab falafel and hummus at Abu Yousef . Enjoy Jordanian hospitality, authentic Arab cuisine and locally made St George wines in an old Ottoman house at Haret Jdoudna . Or sit down to a true Jordanian feast at Hikayet Sitti – you'll feel like family as the chef-owner and her children explain each dish to you while you dine in the traditional Madaba home of her grandmother.

How to get there: Mt Nebo is about 50 minutes southwest of Amman by car. Madaba is 15-20 minutes east of Mt Nebo. If you’re going directly to Madaba by skipping Mt Nebo, you can reach Madaba via Rte 35 in about 40 minutes.

Travel time: 40-65 minutes, depending on route.

A decorative glass cup (half-full of tea) with handle sits on a rust-coloured rock overlooking the Dead Sea.

3. Dead Sea

Why go:  The Dead Sea is a place to rest and recharge with natural spa treatments. While you’re in the area, you might also consider checking out some community-based tourism activities and try canyoning in Wadi Mujib .

What to see:  Purchase a day pass from one of the Dead Sea hotels and gain access to their private pools and beaches (for example, Dead Sea Marriott Resort and Spa offers a day pass for JD60 which includes JD25 to be used for food and drink). Lather on mineral-rich mud before taking a float in the healing waters here at the lowest point on Earth. Splurge on a spa treatment at the Kempinski Hotel Ishtar .

Those looking for adventure will find it at Wadi Mujib where abseiling is available in the river canyon from April through October. You can also join a more leisurely hike and cycle with NGO Al Numeira Environmental Association or learn to make local handicrafts, harvest vegetables, and cook shrak bread and other local dishes through the Zikra Initiative. Before you head back to Amman, catch the sunset – from the beach, the Panoramic Complex , or one of the lookout points along the highway.

A woman in a black bathing suit stands on some white rocks at the shore of the Dead Sea; her arms are spread wide and her legs are crossed, while her legs, arms and face is covered in black mud.

Where to eat and drink:  Al Numeira’s quaint café in the Ghor community serves up local flavors in a lovely patio setting, and the proceeds are funnelled back into the community to support environmental and cultural programming (so you can eat well and do good, too). Rover’s Return is the place for burgers, seafood, and beer in a pub atmosphere.

How to get there:  The Dead Sea is about 45 minutes to one hour from Amman by car, along the Dead Sea Rd.

Travel time: Between 45 and 60 minutes.

Taken from a spring-flower-filled hill, this image looks over a semi-circular set of pillars that are part of Roman ruins.

Why go:  The slower pace of the northern city of Jerash provides the perfect escape from Amman. And the impressive archaeological site at the city centre is believed to be one of the best-preserved Roman towns in the world.

What to see:  The Roman ruins are a must. Walk the colonnaded streets of the archaeological site and explore the temples and theatres with views over the city. You can visit year-round, but springtime is extra sweet with colourful wildflowers popping up amidst the storied stones.

A shot looking down a table at plates filled with a rice and lentil dish; the plate nearest the camera is in focus, while all the others are blurred (along with various people's arms extending over the table at the far end).

Where to eat and drink:  Well-loved for its Lebanese mezze (small plates of hot and cold appetisers including pickles, olives, salads and hummus) and open-air terrace, Lebanese House (known to locals as “Um Khalil”) is a longtime favorite – albeit a pricey one by local standards. Artemis Restaurant is an affordable alternative and also offers local flavours and views from the hilltop terrace. Both restaurants also have a selection of shisha, beer and wine. For a truly local  experience, opt instead for a Jordanian meal at a local family home  .

How to get there:  Jerash is about one hour north of Amman by car, via Al-Urdon St and Rte 35.

Travel time:  Approximately 60 minutes.

Read more: Taste of Rainbow Street: a stroll along Amman's famous road

Three people hike along a rocky path towards a forest within some rolling hills.

Why go:  A castle, forested hiking trails and local craft lessons await in this sleepy northern village.

What to see: Climb to the top of Ajloun Castle for a view over the olive groves and surrounding countryside. Hike a section of the Jordan Trail or one of the Ajloun Forest Reserve trails before paying a visit to the three themed houses here:  Soap House , where you can learn to make olive oil soap from local women and purchase some eco-friendly souvenirs; the Biscuit House , where you can snack on locally-made treats; and the House of Calligraphy ,  where you can practice the art of writing your name in Arabic script.

Where to eat and drink: Take in the idyllic, panoramic views of Ajloun Forest Reserve from their on-site restaurant (be sure to call ahead as meals are on request). Or book a local lunch or cooking lesson with Engaging Cultures for the chance to break bread with a local family in Orjan Village.

How to get there: Ajloun is about 1.5 hours from Amman by car, via Al-Urdon St, Rte 35, and Rte 20. As it’s about 30 minutes beyond Jerash, you could combine the two and spend the morning in Jerash and the afternoon in Ajloun.

Travel time: Around 90 minutes.

Why go:  Get off the tourist trail for a day of rock climbing and craft beer (in that order, of course).

What to see:  Spend the day scaling rocks in Fuheis with family-run outdoor adventure and gear company Treks . Then watch the sunset from the outdoor terrace at Carakale Brewing Company , Jordan’s only brewery.

Where to eat and drink:  Relax with a good cup of coffee and a grilled panini or pizza in the cosy atmosphere of El Housh Café & Gallery . BnB Beer and Burger is a popular local spot for pub fare and local and international beers as well as wine and craft cocktails. Carakale has a selection of brews made on site and a barbecue grill, but they do not have a full kitchen or food menu. So come prepared with picnic eats and your own meats and other items for grilling. Zuwwadeh Restaurant is a bit pricier but the authentic Arab dishes, comfortable dining (indoor and outdoor tables are available) and the sweet sounds provided by the oud player make it well worth the cost.

How to get there:  Fuheis is reachable in about 40 minutes by minibus from Abdali station, but you’ll still need to book a car or taxi back to Amman so consider booking a driver or renting a car.

Travel time:  Around 40 minutes.

1 Week Jordan Itinerary

Jordan, Amman, Umbrella Street

My 1 week Jordan itinerary is designed for those who only have a short trip planned.

7 days is going to give you just enough time to see the top highlights of this fabulous country, which you can definitely visit independently, or with guided tours, if you like.

Day 1: Amman

Start your time in Jordan’s capital Amman – this is likely to be where you’ll enter the country and makes for the perfect introduction.

Indeed this super relaxed capital honestly feels more like a town than a city and is the perfect place to stroll around in order to get acquainted with this friendly and welcoming country.

From falafel tastings to mosque visits, roman ruins to bustling souks, there’s loads of great things to see and do in Amman that will keep you more than entertained for at least one day.

Learn more in my list of the top 13 things to do in Amman and when it comes to good value accommodation in the capital, highly recommended is Jordan Towers , which boasts an amazing location in downtown Amman, some of the best free breakfasts I’ve ever tasted and super fast, free wifi.

With a roof terrace, as well as spotlessly clean dorms and private rooms, it’s a great place to base yourself in the capital.

Day 2: Jerash

One of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world, there’s absolutely no question that Jerash is a total must on any travel itinerary of Jordan.

Easily accessible from the capital Amman, I’d actually just recommend taking a day trip to Jerash and then returning to the capital to spend the night.

Not only is this less stressful, but the level and price of accommodation is better in Amman compared to Jerash too.

That said, you will need to allow a good few hours to see and experience everything at Jerash, because this place is seriously huge.

I’d certainly recommend an early start for your day trip, not least because the public minivans that run there can take a while to fill up and start moving!

Welcome to the Middle East!

Once you do get to Jerash, you don’t need to take a guide, because wandering around the ruins here with your Jordan Lonely Planet will totally suffice when it comes to marvelling at this huge and ancient city.

And don’t be put off by the awful souvenir shops at the entrance either… it gets better I promise!

Honestly, once you get into the city itself and start wandering this beautifully preserved and tout-free Roman town, you’ll forget all about them!

Remember to take a hat, sunscreen and water for your Jerash adventure and when you’re finished, it’s an easy minivan ride back to Amman.

For day trips to Jerash, look no further than these great offerings , which have some of the best prices around.

Day 3: Dead Sea

On Day 3 in Jordan, it’s time for another day trip out of the capital, this time to the incredible floating water world of the Dead Sea.

Honestly, I had no idea just how cool the sensation of being totally buoyant was going to be, so let me point out to you now that it’s actually way more fun than it sounds!

The downside about the Dead Sea in Jordan is the very limited public transport that goes there, but you can avoid taxi fees if you’re on a budget by taking one of Jordan Towers’ excellent backpacker-style tours.

These tours tend to run daily and generally bring 4 travellers together so that the cost of a driver and vehicle are shared.

In addition to the Dead Sea, the trip also includes panoramic lookouts, the Madaba Mosaics (which just happen to include the earliest map of Palestine ever found) and Mount Nebo – where Moses is supposed to have spotted the Promised Land.

A full day itinerary with a local driver who, although not an official guide, will be able to offer you a great insight into life in Jordan, I highly recommend Jordan Towers trip to the Dead Sea, especially if you’re a solo traveller looking to meet other adventurers like I was.

Day 4: Kings Highway Tour

After returning to spend the night in Amman following your Dead Sea trip, it’s up early to begin your journey to Petra, Jordan’s star attraction.

While you can travel straight to Petra from Amman either via local minibus or the slightly more luxurious Jett Bus, Jordan Towers actually offer another top day trip to Petra, which allows you to see some stunning sights on the way, which are otherwise totally impossible to get to without your own transport.

These include the Roman ruins of Umm ar-Rasas, the Mujib Valley, Karak Castle, the Dana Valley and Shobak Castle, all of which sit along the Kings Highway – a road that provides some of Jordan’s most stunning scenery too.

Because of how much you see (and how fab the views are), I highly recommend taking a day to experience the King’s Highway Tour – it makes for a far more exciting, scenic and interesting journey to Petra than the main road.

As a full day trip however, it does mean you won’t arrive into Wadi Musa – the town nearest to Petra – until about 6pm, so it’s a good idea to already have your accommodation here booked.

In my opinion, the great-value spot of Petra Gate Hoste l is hard to beat.

Day 5 & 6: Petra

And then enter the piece de resistance, Petra is absolutely worth 2 days of your Jordan itinerary.

The Red Rose City is far bigger and grander than every picture you’ve ever seen lets on, and from its walking trails to its monasteries, tombs, theatres and caves, you really will need a couple of days to get your head around the place… and you’ll need at least one empty memory card for your camera too!

An easy downhill walk from Petra Gate Hostel in Wadi Musa, the visitor centre at Petra is a great place to pick up a free map and plan your time in this ancient desert city too.

Must-sees at Petra include the famous Siq and Treasury, as well as the Theatre, Royal Tombs, the Monastery and you don’t miss the trail of the High Place of Sacrifice either!

Learn more about how to see Petra for less with this helpful article I wrote all about visiting this ancient city on the cheap!

Day 7: Wadi Rum

And with one last day in Jordan, there’s no question a night in the desert of Wadi Rum is the perfect way to end a jam-packed week in this country.

Easily accessible via public bus from Wadi Musa, Wadi Rum is a stunning desert landscape populated by the Bedouin People who offer incredible safari tours and camping under the stars in this remote and stark landscape.

I actually booked my Wadi Rum tour (because you have to take a tour) through Petra Gate Hostel and scored an excellent deal that included transport to and from Wadi Rum village, a full day safari jeep tour, a night in a beautiful Bedouin camp, plus breakfast, lunch and dinner.

A definite highlight of my time in Jordan, Wadi Rum will give you a very different, but still dazzling side of Jordan.

Learn more about what you should pack if you want to explore this desert region in my full guide about what to wear in Jordan .

10 Day Jordan Itinerary

Jordan, Petra, Treasury

If you’re lucky enough to have 10 days for your Jordan itinerary, then I’d highly recommend following the 7 day itinerary above, but giving yourself an extra night in Amman either at the start or end of your trip.

This will give you time to explore what is known as the country’s Desert Castles, which lie to the east of the capital, near the town of Azraq.

Again, although they can be difficult to see without your own transport, Jordan Towers offers day trips for budget travellers to see around 5 of these castles by pairing you with other backpackers, a driver and a vehicle.

For history buffs, this is a must-do trip that takes you through the desert towards the Iraqi border.

With 8 days of your Jordan itinerary then planned out, why not spend the remaining 2 days relaxing on the country’s coastline?

Aqaba is Jordan’s famous Red Sea resort and where the locals go to let their hair down.

From diving to partying, relaxing to snorkelling, there’s plenty to do here, almost all of which revolves around the sand, sea and sun.

As such, I’d actually avoid staying in the town of Aqaba itself, and instead book 2 nights at one of the many South Beach accommodation options instead.

Top of the list is Darna Village Beach Hostel , which continues to get rave reviews from travellers thanks to its top facilities, great location and friendly staff.

2 Week Jordan Itinerary

Jordan, Amman, Citadel Views

For your 2 week Jordan Itinerary, I’d highly suggest following the 10 day programme above and then combining this with an extra day in Petra.

With 3 full days in this ancient city you’re likely to be able to see it from every angle, as well as enjoy some very early morning and evening views after the crowds have dissipated.

Staying at the Infinity Lodge in Petra will also give you an extra special experience!

The best and cheapest way to access Petra for 3 days is to invest in the Jordan Expert Pass . Learn more about this by checking out my article everything you need to know about travelling in Jordan .

And then finally, with 3 days of your 2 week Jordan itinerary still remaining, some incredible opportunities for hiking in the Dana or Mujib Reserves await you.

The best way to get off the beaten track in Jordan, heading to one of these protected areas of natural beauty will provide you with some of Jordan’s best scenery and ecotourism experiences.

From the numerous trails you can explore with guides, to the hidden accommodation options that deliver solitude and seclusion, this is a Jordan experience you certainly won’t forget in a hurry.

Jordan Mini Travel Guide

When to Visit Jordan?

Jordan, Kings Highway, Me

No question in my mind that you should definitely visit Jordan during the spring and autumn seasons i.e. from April to May and September to October.

This will allow you to get the most from the country’s lovely historical and natural sites without being either too hot or too cold!

How to Get There?

Jordan, Petra, Flag

Most people access Jordan by flying into the international airport in the capital Amman.

As always, I use Skyscanner to find the best prices.

If you are crossing into Amman overland from Jerusalem, check out this post that details all the ins and outs of crossing this border.

Top 5 Packing Items for Jordan

Jordan, Petra, Me

#1 Good Camera – You will be pretty much snapping non-stop during your time in Jordan and will need a good camera to do this gorgeous country justice. I highly recommend the Sony A6000 , which I use for all my travels and love, not least because it’s light, compact and robust!

#2 Good Walking Shoes – There will be a lot of sightseeing in Jordan, it’s as simple as that! Make sure your feet are comfortable therefore with a pair of New Balance Trainers . I love mine!

#3 Head Lamp – Great for taking into Roman ruins to get an even better look at the amazing engravings and for any power cuts you may experience in Jordan, I love my Black Diamond Storm , which served me super well in this country.

#4 Sun Hat – Trips to Roman ruins, crusader castles and Petra will mean many hours in the hot sun of Jordan. Do yourself a favour and bring a wide-brimmed hat to protect you. I love this Hello Sunshine design.

#5 Long Thin Trousers – While Jordan isn’t a super strict Muslim country, you’re unlikely to feel comfortable walking around in anything too short. As such a pair of long, thin cotton or linen trousers provides the perfect attire for this hot country.

Hi there, including prices would help out a bunch!!!

jordan day trips

Hi Tien, thanks for your great suggestion – unfortunately prices change regularly and this makes it hard to keep posts accurate if I list amounts – especially as I blog about many different countries. Latest prices can always be found by going direct to the websites of the products I mention such as the Jordan pass, Jordan Visa, Accommodation Websites and Petra Visitor Website. If there is any prices you want in particular, please drop me a line and I will try my best to get the latest info for you. Thanks, Steph

jordan day trips

Hi, roughly how much did that package of Wadi Rum cost?

Oh gosh Caroline, I’m not sure I can remember, but I’m guessing around $50 USD? Are you thinking of heading to Jordan soon?

jordan day trips

Hi There. Planning to spend a week or so in amman. Very informative blog you have here! Helped me gain quick knowledge about so many things. I am an avid traveller too – always travel with my wife. Done america and europe and some more and now planning jordan and israel on separate trips. amman accommodation baffles me. The jordan hostel for a basic double ensuite room costs about INR 2500 plus 26 % taxes/charges. We are Seniors and do not wish to use shared baths. For similar amount I am getting a 3 star hotel in the city. But I want to use the hostel package tours which you say are cheap. So what do you recommend we do? Also can you tell me about the breakfast timings and what they serve at the hostel?

Hi there, thanks for your question and delighted to hear you are heading to the Middle East soon. If a 3 star hotel in the city suits you best, do that and then go to the hostel to book one of their tours. As far as I know, the tours are open to people not staying there too. Breakfast at Jordan Towers is amazing – I think it runs from 7am – 10am is a Middle Eastern feast – so hummus, olives, tomato and cucumber, plus eggs, tea / coffee, bread and normally some sort of cake too! There’s also ham and cheese on offer for those who eat it.

Hi Steph. You are a rockstar, a Robinhood of Travel Maniacs. 🙂 We are a couple travelling to Jordan and Egypt from 23 Dec 18-04 Jan 19, with a 10 year old daughter. Is it advisable to stay at Dead Sea and Wadi Rum Camps in the winters, or the day trips would be better? Also, will the weather allow us to do water sports at Red Sea? if yes, what is recommended, Aqaba or Dahab???

Ha ha brilliant! This comment made me smile and laugh from ear to ear! Having not travelled Egypt this time of year, I can’t talk about the Dead Sea and Wadi Rum camps with full certainty, but I do know December holidays are a busy time in this part of the world, so you would likely be ok to stay overnight there – probably just a few extra layers needed! I’d have to research more to be 100% certain however. Also staying overnight in Wadi Rum really is the highlight when all those stars come out and you get to camp in peace and the wilderness. When it comes to the Red Sea, I’d advise Dahab over Aqaba every time. Again, not been here this time of year and I know the sun disappears early, like Europe, as the shortest day of the year is just before your arrival, but I’m sure many do still visit at Christmas time. In terms of dive conditions, I’d recommend emailing a dive school there and asking. Not sure how warm the water would is the other concern!

I am glad I could make the diva smile. I meant every bit of it. Coming back to misery, how can one save on money with the guides in Amman, Jerash and Petra, considering visit to historical monuments without them would be meaningless.

I didn’t take guides in any of those places to be honest and found them all worthwhile even without it. Otherwise, probably haggling with guides in each specific location would get you the best deal. Still smiling! 🙂

The Jordan Less Traveled: 5 Great (and Unexpected) Day Trips from Amman, Jordan

Although compact in size, Jordan boasts of a number of historical and geographical wonders. Of these, the mystical ruins of Petra, the otherworldly landscape of Wadi Rum and the mind-boggling Dead Sea get the most eyeballs.

But for those looking for more, there are smaller archaeological finds, cultural sites and glorious outdoor attractions to be uncovered.

Make time in your itinerary for these lesser-known wonders of Jordan that are equally as magnificent and delightful to discover and experience as their more-crowded counterparts. And they’re all within perfect day trip distance of Amman.

As always, check for travel guidelines and closures before planning your trip.

Continuously inhabited for the last 6,500 years, Jerash is known for its remarkably well-preserved Greco-Roman ruins. One of the 10 Hellenistic cities that made up the Decapolis League during Roman rule, Jerash begs for slow exploration.

From the imposing Hadrian’s Arch, built around A.D. 129, walk to the magnificent oval plaza, or forum, ringed with 56 Ionic columns. Then pass through the colonnaded street via a paved walkway dotted with wildflowers to the nymphaeum, a fountain dedicated to nymphs, lined with ornate Corinthian columns.

If you think you have seen it all by this point, you’ll be pleased to find more. Continue walking to the immaculately preserved north theater and then on to the huge south theater, big enough to seat nearly 3,000 spectators.

Moses Memorial Church, Mount Nebo, Jordan.

There’s a palpable feeling of serenity and divinity at Mount Nebo, about 21 miles (33 kilometers) southeast of Amman. On a clear day, from the mountaintop, you can see all the way to the Jordan River, Dead Sea and beyond to Jerusalem.

Legend goes that it was from here that Moses had his first sighting of the Promised Land, which he was barred from entering. He’s believed to have lived on Mount Nebo until his death, and some believe he’s buried nearby, although there’s no clear evidence of this.

The fourth-century Moses Memorial Church on Mount Nebo has a fabulous collection of Byzantine mosaics representing wildlife and hunting scenes.

Be on the lookout for the towering Brazen Serpent sculpture by Italian artist Gian Paolo Fantoni, a serpentine cross that references the biblical stories of both Moses and Jesus.

a city view of Madaba, Jordan

You know you have arrived in Madaba, about 20 miles from Amman, when you start seeing shops selling mosaics in all shapes and sizes.

Inside the small and peaceful Greek Orthodox St. George’s Church lies the town’s biggest draw: an exquisitely detailed sixth-century mosaic of the region, thought to be the oldest mosaic floor map in existence.

What remains of the map, originally made with millions of colored pieces of stone, displays an astonishing amount of detail, capturing the area from Lebanon stretching all the way down to the Nile River delta.

If you haven’t had your fill of mosaics, head to the nearby Archaeological Park, an open-air museum, to peruse Roman ruins and Byzantine mosaics.

The sixth-century Church of the Virgin Mary inside the park has an impressive mosaic with intricate geometric designs that was hidden for years beneath a private home until its excavation in 1887.

Umm Qais

Located on a hilltop looking down over the Jordan Valley and far out to the Sea of Galilee, Umm Qais is known both for its fantastic views as well as its impressive ruins.

Roughly two hours by road from Amman, it’s a perfect day trip to explore the remnants of a well-laid-out ancient Roman city, Gadara, which like Jerash was part of the Decapolis League.

Meander along a still-paved central road with imposing columns and visit a well-preserved ancient theater. Also, look out for an abandoned Ottoman-era village that was occupied as recently as the 1980s.

In Umm Qais, picked in 2022 as one of the Best Tourism Villages by the United Nations World Tourism Organization, culture fiends can look forward to partaking in a variety of activities that offer deeper insights into local life and customs.

There are plenty of options through local tour operators, from olive picking to beekeeping and cooking lessons.

Aljoun Castle Jordan

Leave Amman’s urban sprawl for Aljoun’s verdant slopes and pleasant weather, just over an hour away. Covering 5 square miles (13 square kilometers), the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature’s (RSCN) Aljoun Forest Reserve is home to evergreen oak, pine, carob, pistachio and wild strawberry trees.

The best way to explore this magical corner of Jordan is through its many hiking trails. The nearby Aljoun Castle is an imposing 12th-century fortress built on a hilltop that offers spectacular views of Jordan Valley and beyond.

A small on-site museum has on display a collection of mosaics, medieval weaponry and other artifacts.

In the village of Orjan, visit the Soap House, part of the RSCN’s community development initiatives, where local women craft handmade soap from olive oil.

At the Biscuit House, sample a variety of edible goodies made using the finest of naturally sourced ingredients from the region.

A short walk away, in the nearby village of Rasun, visit the House of Calligraphy to watch a demonstration of Arabic calligraphy. Those who are interested can also learn the basics through guided workshops.

Culture and customs.

As a Muslim country, Jordan’s culture is quite conservative, although not as conservative as some other Middle Eastern countries. Western influences (particularly in Amman and other large cities) have infiltrated Jordanian society so Jordan now possesses a mix of Arabian customs amid modern ways of life. Due to immigration, Jordan now has a significant Palestinian and Iraqi population, adding to the cultural diversity of the country.

Despite the outside influences, Islamic traditions are strong in Jordan with spectacular mosques signaling the call to prayer five times a day, Ramadan being observed each year and some segregation of the sexes occurring.

The desert-dwelling Bedouin have a distinct culture of their own, drawing on traditions that have been passed down for centuries. Living a largely nomadic lifestyle, the Bedouin rely on the herding of animals and the creation of handicrafts in the absence of a fertile environment to farm. With a strong musical heritage, traditional instruments are played and time-honored traditions are continued.

Hospitality is a crucial element of Jordanian culture. Most visitors will be humbled by the kindness, sincerity and genuine care showed by Jordanians. Being welcomed into peoples’ homes is common, and can probably be attributed to the custom of welcoming strangers and sharing food when traveling in the unforgiving desert.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Featuring typical Middle Eastern ingredients like lamb, chickpeas, garlic and a range of aromatic herbs and spices, Jordanian cuisine is delicious.

Things to try in Jordan

Like many other Middle Eastern countries, a plate of shared breads and dips is a great way to begin a feast.

This traditional Bedouin dish of lamb and yogurt is usually served with rice and bread. This is the national dish of Jordan, so definitely try it before you leave.

These small, sweet pastries made with honey and nuts will have you going back for more.

The coffee in Jordan is strong. Often spiced with a hint of cardamom, coffee is strongly linked to the famed Jordanian hospitality, so drink up – it would be rude not to!

Geography and environment

Jordan is made up of a staggeringly diverse range of natural environments. From stark deserts to towering mountains, fertile wetlands, coastal reefs and urban cities, journeying through Jordan provides changing scenery and varying conditions.

Sharing borders with Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Jordan mixes modern architecture with heritage-filled buildings, well-manicured streets with historic alleyways and impressive mansions with simple homes.

Modern, developed cities like Amman and Aqaba feature unique architecture, spectacular mosques, five-star hotels and resorts. Small villages with rustic housing populate the less-built-up rural areas and Bedouin tents made of goat hair can be found in desert areas.

History and government

Early history.

The country now known as Jordan was originally inhabited by the Nabataeans thousands of years ago. Over the centuries, Jordan has been a place conquered and inhabited by many different people including the Romans, Greeks, Assyrians, Ottoman Turks, Egyptians and Mamluks (people of Kurdish origins). All these influences can still be seen today in Jordan's ancient ruins, architecture, crafts and arts. Many battles were fought in Ancient Jordan, including the Christian crusaders who clashed with Islamic Forces in Jordan during the 11th and 12th centuries. The first Muslim Dynasty began with the Umayyad Empire in 661.

Recent history

In 1950, Jordan was renamed the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and in 1951, King Abdullah I was assassinated while visiting a mosque. His eldest son became king but was removed from his duties in 1952 due to mental illness. In 1953, his teenage son Hussein Ibn Talal became king, and continued to rule for over 40 years. In the 1960s, Jordan saw many immigrants arrive and settle – mainly Palestinians escaping the conflict in their homeland.

In 1999, King Abdullah II succeeded his father King Hussein and continues to rule Jordan now. His reign has been characterized by liberal policies, economic reforms and technological advances. His wife, Queen Rania of Jordan, has a visible public profile, is active in many social causes and is regarded internationally as a highly influential woman.

Do you need a visa for Jordan?

Visas are required by all visitors entering Jordan.

It can be significantly more expensive to acquire your visa from the embassy in your home country.

If you require a stay longer than 14 days, visas obtained from the embassy in your home country will be valid for two months.

When is the best time to visit Jordan?

The weather in Jordan can get quite extreme. Overall, it tends to be hot during the day and cold at night (in desert areas, expect it to be extremely hot during the day and freezing at night). Yet during winter it can get bitterly cold, with snowfall occurring in some parts of the country.

Traveling during the summer months (June, July and August) can be challenging for those not accustomed to the heat, so visiting Jordan during spring and autumn is recommended for those who wish to escape the hotter temperatures.

Is tipping customary in Jordan?

Tipping is up to the individual in Jordan. Hotels and up-market restaurants typically add a surcharge that is included in bills, which is usually 10%. Rounding up bills and leaving spare change is a good idea when dining in smaller restaurants and when using taxis.

What is the internet access like in Jordan?

Internet access is growing rapidly in Jordan. Internet can usually be accessed from hotels and internet cafes in major cities. Expect little to no access in small towns, villages and other rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Jordan?

Cell phone coverage is good in Jordan’s major cities and built-up areas like Amman and Aqaba. Expect limited to no phone coverage in more isolated areas like the desert. Ensure you have global roaming activated on your phone before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Jordan?

Western-style toilets are common in modern hotels, malls and at popular tourist areas. Squat toilets are the standard throughout the rest of the country. Sometimes, you may need to pay and bring your own toilet paper when visiting public rest rooms.

What will it cost for a…?

Street snack = 3 JOD Can of soft drink = 1 JOD Dinner at a restaurant = 10 JOD Embroidered shawl = 20-30 JOD

Can I drink the water in Jordan?

Drinking water from taps in Jordan can be safe, depending on where you are. It's considered safe to drink water from modern hotels that have filtered water but perhaps not so from smaller establishments and in rural areas. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Peel fruit before eating and avoid ice in drinks.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Jordan?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by stores in Jordan. Smaller cafes and shops may not accept credit cards so ensure you carry enough cash to cover small purchases.

What is ATM access like in Jordan?

ATMs are common in Jordan’s main cities so finding one won't be a problem. Rural and remote areas typically will have less ATMs so be sure to carry enough cash for purchases when away from the city.

Is Jordan LGBTQIA+ friendly?

As a Muslim country, Jordan’s culture is quite conservative, although not as conservative as some other Middle Eastern countries. Homosexuality has been decriminalized in Jordan since 1951, and while Jordanians who identify as having an LGBTQIA+ identity will not be criminalized, many people continue to hide their sexuality or identity from their families, and there is still a deep social stigma. As long as LGBTQIA+ travelers display some discretion and respect for local culture, particularly when visiting places outside of the major cities and tourist areas, they will have no problem visiting Jordan.

What to wear in Jordan?

Although Jordan is known as one of the more progressive countries in the   Middle East , it's still a mostly Muslim country and conservative clothing is the norm. You don't need to cover yourself from head to toe, but the dress code is on the stricter side when compared to Western countries like those in   Europe   and the   United States .

Jordan Encounters

This was a great tour! I really lucked out because I had other travel plans fall through and came to Jordan with only about 24 hours notice and less than a week before this tour started (fortunately another group had already booked one in my available time frame and I was able to tag along) Food was great (note: I'm not a vegetarian), sites were amazing, and Amer was a fantastic guide. Had great insights to the culture and advice on maximizing time at the sites. Petra, of course, was great, but I thought Jaresh and Wadi Rum were even better. Dead Sea and Mount Nebo also were high lights. Amman was very accessible... Take an extra day to see the Jordan Museum and wander Rainbow Street.

Jordan Experience (Classic, Summer, Dead Sea Extension, 9 Days)

It's an experience not to be missed - a true "bucket-list" destination! It was wonderful stepping back in time and visiting places I had heard about growing up. Walking down the siq (in Petra) and seeing my first glimpse of the iconic Treasury building gave me goose bumps. It is something that will stay with me forever. as will floating in the Dead Sea which was another amazing experience. Insight took care of everything with a representative meeting us as we walked off the plane, rushed us through the VIP immigration station and on to our luggage collection & hotel. All our hotels were first class and we were well looked after by our guide and driver stopping at local Jordanian cafes and restaurants for lunch & snacks. I would thoroughly recommend the trip! But be prepared to walk, especially in Petra.

Unforgettable Jordan and Cairo

The tour guides and concierges were Excellent! However, the tour company, Europamundo often took too long to reply to questions in the lead up to my departure. I really don't think I should have been receiving pertinent information like the country portal entry requirements when I was literally in the cab on the way to the airport. Furthermore, it turned out that my party of 2, were the only ones on the particular tour (Unforgettable Jordan & Cairo), so I really don't understand why there was such delay. We submitted l required documents and payments on time. Let me once a reiterate that our tour guides in Jordan and Cairo were OUTSTANDING, patient, knowledgeable, punctual and very professional.

Jordan has great scenery, great people and great things to see. This was a very enjoyable and interesting tour. I’d recommend you add a free day in Amman at the start, as the Roman Theatre and the Citadel are certainly worth s visit and can easily and cheaply got to by taxi. The accommodation at Sun City in Wadi Rum was a big disappointment.
I loved the trip so much. From the first class hotels to the tour guides, driver and all the sites visited. It was truly an amazing experience and I wouldn't have changed a thing. Thank you

Renting a car for your jordan road trip (or not), don’t forget your jordan pass, the perfect 5 days in jordan itinerary, if you have 6 days in jordan…, if you have 7 days in jordan…, the best time to road trip jordan, what to pack for a week in jordan, 5-7 day jordan itinerary map.

We designed this 5-7 day Jordan itinerary as a loop beginning and ending in Amman.

It is primarily intended as a road trip–and yes, you can absolutely road trip Jordan with relative ease!

However, if you don’t want to drive, through a combination of organized tours, public transportation, and/or private transfers, you can easily spend a week in Jordan without a car, as well.

This itinerary is intended for travelers enjoying their first trip to Jordan who are hoping to hit up the country’s biggest highlights in a very limited time.

And, since Jordan is such a small and easy-to-navigate country, that is quite doable!

If you drove this route straight through without detours, it would include a little over 12 hours of driving in the whole loop.

Taking a road trip in Jordan is an absolute delight, and this itinerary is perfect for doing so!

Jordan’s roads are well-marked and (outside of Amman), fairly simple to navigate.

When renting a car in Jordan, we recommend shopping for your rental car through  Discover Cars , which will allow you to sift through all your options and choose the right car for you based on price, the reputation of the company that is renting it, and the terms of the rental contract.

Prefer not to drive?

You can still have a fantastic time in Jordan!

While navigating this itinerary via public transportation alone would be cumbersome, guided tours can offer excellent value for money and keep your trip planning simple.

Basing yourself primarily in Amman and booking a multi-day tour like this to see Petra and Wadi Rum, and then supplementing with day trips like this to places like Jerash, is absolutely a valid way to have a fantastic Jordan vacation.

For virtually all travelers planning a trip to Jordan based on this itinerary, the Jordan Pass is a must-buy before you go!

The pass is organized by the Jordanian government and includes entrance fees to more than 40 of the top attractions in Jordan, including Petra, Wadi Rum, Jerash, and many more.

It also covers the cost of your visa on arrival!

The pricing of the pass is structured in such a way that once you account for the cost of your visa and entrance to Petra, the pass has already paid for itself, making it an easy win.

However, make sure that you purchase and download your pass before flying into Amman!

When we went through immigration, the family next to us in line ended up having to purchase a separate visa because they only screenshotted their pass confirmation and didn’t download it before arriving.

Day 1 in Jordan: Explore the ruins of Jerash and float in the Dead Sea.

If you’re trying to see Jordan in 5 days, you’ll want to hit the ground running as soon as you land in the country!

After getting your rental car in Amman, drive north to explore one of the best-preserved Roman cities outside of Italy.

Explore the Roman city of Jerash.

Stepping foot inside Jerash is an incredible experience, and it reminded me immediately of exploring Pompeii in Italy (but in Jordan, we got to start our visit with a freshly squeezed pomegranate juice in hand).

Don’t miss the magnificent South Theater (climb to the top for the full effect–the acoustics are incredible), Oval Plaza, or Cardo Maximus column-lined street.

You’ll also find beautiful temples, including ones dedicated to Zeus and Artemis, in Jerash.

kate storm at the top of the south theater jordan jerash

Head to the Dead Sea to float your worries away.

Once you wrap up at Jerash, make your way to the Dead Sea, where you can float your worries away in one of the most unique landscapes on Earth!

Jordan’s side of the Dead Sea lends itself to luxurious resorts with private beaches that are more affordable than you might think.

… And, since the Dead Sea is shrinking every year, it’s worth a bit of a splurge.

This is one of those “experience-it-while-you-can” attractions!

Plus, floating in the Dead Sea, while iconic, doesn’t take very long, making it easy to fit into a 5 day Jordan itinerary.

Due to the salt content in the water, it’s recommended to only stay in the water for 15 minutes or so per visit.

We loved our stay at the gorgeous Dead Sea Marriot Resort and would be thrilled to stay again!

Check rates & book your stay at the Dead Sea Marriot Resort!

Day 2 in Jordan: Spend the night camping in Wadi Rum.

After waking up at the Dead Sea, enjoying the gigantic breakfast spread at the Dead Sea Marriot Resort , and possibly going for a morning float, it’s time to head south!

The final destination of your second day in Jordan is the otherworldly Wadi Rum, but consider making a quick detour before you go!

Wander through Kerak Castle.

Kerak Castle (often also written as Alkarak Castle) is one of the largest and best-preserved Crusader Castles in Jordan.

Dating to the 1100s, everything from the castle’s structures to the views here are incredible, and it’s a fascinating side stop during your road trip in Jordan.

Drive to the incredible Wadi Rum Protected Area.

After seeing the castle, make your way to Wadi Rum for one of the most memorable nights of your life!

The Wadi Rum Protected Area is, more or less, a desert landscape that looks like Mars crossed with Utah .

It’s the traditional home of Bedouin people, who host guests like us in their special landscape today.

It’s also a popular filming location (see: Lawrence of Arabia, Star Wars, Dune, and many more).

kate storm and jeremy storm on a jeep tour wadi rum camping

Wadi Rum is a magnificent destination and hands down one of the best places to visit in Jordan.

We’ve written an entire guide to Wadi Rum to help you plan your trip in detail, but here’s the short version: this afternoon, take either a camel or Jeep tour, and then spend the night at a Bedouin Camp.

Camps range from extremely basic to the famous and luxurious Bubble Luxotel .

We opted for the middle-of-the-road Candles Camp and had a fantastic time!

Check rates & book your stay in Wadi Rum today!

Day 3 in Jordan: Adventure across Wadi Rum and drive to Petra.

We go over this in more detail in our Wadi Rum guide , but essentially, your time in Wadi Rum should absolutely include both a Jeep tour and a camel ride!

The Jeep tour takes much longer and is a great option for this morning (however, you can also do a sunset Jeep tour and sunrise camel tour instead–it all depends on your exact schedule).

Once you wrap up exploring the majestic beauty of Wadi Rum, it’s time to drive to Petra!

The drive to Petra (or more specifically, Wadi Musa, the modern village outside of Petra) from Wadi Rum takes a couple of hours, give or take.

In other words, you can take your time enjoying Wadi Rum and plan to arrive in Wadi Musa to settle in for the next day, which will arguably be the busiest of your trip!

kate storm riding a camel wadi rum jordan

Day 4 in Jordan: Marvel at the Lost City of Petra.

The crown jewel of any trip to Jordan, the Lost City of Petra more than lived up to our sky-high expectations!

While the famous Treasury is just as incredible as described, the full experience of visiting Petra, from the Monastery to the Siq slot canyon to the lesser-known highlights like the Royal Tombs, is beyond words.

Like other incredible ruin sites around the world such as Pompeii , Angkor Wat , Becan , and more, part of the incredible appeal of Petra lies not just in its photogenic attractions but in the fact that you can truly feel the layout of the city as you explore.

While it would be very easy to spend several days exploring all that Petra has to offer, with only 5 days in Jordan to work with, it’s realistic to plan for one.

How to Structure Your Day in Petra, Jordan

In order to make the most of your one day in Petra, we highly recommend taking advantage of Petra’s lesser-used “back door”.

By using the back door, you’ll first hike to the Monastery (or Ad Dier) at the back of the park, and then walk to the main entrance in Wadi Musa throughout the day, passing by all of Petra’s highlights and saving the Treasury for the grand finale.

You’ll also be able to reverse the 800+ step climb to the Monastery and go down the steps instead!

This is an official entrance, though barely used compared to the crowded front gate.

monastery peeking out of the rocks from petra back door hike

We absolutely adored using this method and felt that we were able to make the most of our time in Petra without feeling rushed, since we knew we didn’t have to turn around and hike back out.

Your hotel can help you arrange transport to the back door–we stayed at Petra Aretas Hotel and they were great about arranging a ride for us, with a mini-tour on the way!

Petra Aretas Hotel also served a great breakfast and is located within walking distance of the main entrance of Petra.

We loved our stay and would be happy to check in again.

Check rates & book your stay at Petra Aretas Hotel!

Day 5 in Jordan: Make your way back to Amman (with sightseeing stops).

On the final day of your 5 day Jordan itinerary, it’s time to make your way back to Amman.

Assuming you have most of a day to work with, though, you’ll find plenty of incredible sightseeing opportunities as you road trip from Wadi Musa back to Amman!

Here are just a few sights to consider adding to your list of things to do in Jordan.

view of busy street in downtown amman jordan

To appreciate a different side of Jordan’s impressive history, enjoy a quick stop in the charming city of Madaba.

While there are a handful of interesting sights and a shopping street to peruse, without a doubt Madaba’s top attraction is the intricate 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land, found on the floor of the Church of Saint George.

Known as the Madaba Map, this striking mosaic is considered to be the oldest surviving map of the Holy Land.

The Baptismal Site of Jesus Christ

Just north of the Dead Sea in Jordan, you’ll find the reported Baptism Site of Jesus Christ, which for thousands of years has been considered the location where John the Baptist baptized Jesus.

While the site is very popular (you can even be baptized there if you choose), it’s also highly managed and a bit–dare I say it–commercialized.

If you’d like to visit, you’ll need to join a group tour, and admission is not included in most Jordan Passes.

Mount Nebo is a highly significant site in the Abrahamic religions and is believed to be the place where Moses glimpsed the Holy Land before he died.

Today, you’ll find sweeping views, beautiful memorials, and art from several cultures on top of the mountain–and on a clear day, you can even see all the way to Jerusalem!

The Moses Memorial Church is a striking blend of extremely old (the church originally dates to the 4th century), and the extremely new, with a 21st-century building surrounding historic mosaics.

King’s Highway Viewpoints

There are two essential roads in Jordan that you’ll hear a lot about when planning a Jordan road trip: the Desert Highway (fast, efficient, but a bit dull), and the King’s Highway (which takes longer, but is also more scenic).

For this 5-7 day Jordan itinerary, we recommend driving part of the Desert Highway on your way to Wadi Rum (when your schedule is more packed) and then taking the King’s Highway all the way up as you head north.

You’ll come across plenty of striking viewpoints as you travel, so be sure to safely pull over and snap photos at a few!

We personally found the northern section of the King’s Highway more scenic than the southern section.

Where to Stay For Your Final Night in Jordan

If your experience is like ours (and for many of your guys flying back out of the region, it will be), your flight out of Jordan will leave very, very early in the morning.

To make life a little easier on ourselves, we checked into this peaceful hotel near the airport for the “night” (our wakeup call to head to the airport was at 1:00 AM).

The rooms were comfortable and the service excellent.

They were even able to call us a taxi and ensure that we were picked up on time, making our bleary-eyed final few hours in Jordan much less stressful.

Check rates & book your stay at The Opal Hotel!

Add a day in Amman.

With 6 days in Jordan, you should absolutely add a day in Amman!

Jordan’s lively capital city offers a chance to see a completely different side of the country than the wild country landscapes and archaeological sites do.

Tour the famous Amman Citadel (and soak in its incredible views), explore the Roman Theater (that is still used for performances!), and visit Rainbow Street.

kate storm at amman citadel overlooking amman jordan

The King Abdullah I Mosque is one of the only mosques in Jordan that non-Muslims can enter, and is also worth seeing.

If it fits into your schedule, the Jordan Museum is also well worth a visit–some of the Dead Sea Scrolls are on display there!

For cheap and delicious eats, don’t miss the famous falafel and hummus at Hashem Restaurant, or the delicious kunefe located just up the road at Habibah.

Slow down or add a day in Aqaba.

Our number one itinerary suggestion if you have a full week in Jordan to work with is simply to slow down!

This suggested route is incredibly packed, and while that’s sustainable for 5-6 days in order to pack in Jordan’s best sights with very limited time, you can’t keep it up forever.

A second day spent in Petra, Wadi Rum, or even the Dead Sea area can add a lot of depth to your trip without having to find yet another hotel to stay in.

kate storm and jeremy storm standing on a sand dune when camping wadi rum jordan

If you’re feeling energized, though, a 7 day Jordan itinerary could also be expanded to include a day of scuba diving and/or snorkeling in Aqaba.

Other options include a hike in a slot canyon like Wadi Mujib, time spent in the Dana Biosphere Reserve, or a soak in the Ma’in Hot Springs.

For something more history-focused, visiting another one of Jordan’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Quesir Amra or Um er-Rasas are also very interesting options.

ma'in hot springs resort with waterfall in center

While you can absolutely enjoy a week in Jordan year-round, spring and fall are considered the optimal times to visit in order to balance crowds and weather.

Summer can be searing hot, however, it’s also the best time to go scuba diving down in Aqaba–if you’re a diver, you may choose to brave the heat inland in order to optimize your time at the Red Sea!

If you plan a winter trip to Jordan, don’t assume you’ll stay warm!

Winters in Jordan can definitely get cold, and you may even experience snow in Amman.

We took our Jordan road trip in March and enjoyed excellent, mild weather throughout our trip.

Here are a few essentials that you should definitely add to your packing list as you prepare for 5 days in Jordan (or more!).

Travel Insurance  — We don’t ever suggest traveling without travel insurance–anything can happen, and a fast-paced road trip is definitely a case of better safe than sorry.

We use and recommend  Safety Wing  for trips to Jordan.

camels in petra jordan, as seen on a itinerary for jordan road trip

Travel Adaptors for Jordan — Unfortunately, Jordan uses several different kinds of plugs (we saw at least 3 kinds during our trip).

To cover most of your bases, you’ll definitely want both European-style adaptors and UK-style adaptors with you.

Many hotels will also supply adaptors in Jordan, as the situation is confusing, but not all do!

Pacsafe  — We can’t recommend our Pacsafe enough!

This travel safe is affordable, sturdy, easy to pack, and will help keep your valuables safe in your hotel room (not that you should need to worry much about theft in Jordan, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!).

dead sea jordan as seen from kings highway on a jordan road trip

Hands-Free Phone Mount  — This is especially important if you don’t have a reliable co-pilot: the last thing you want to do is be fumbling with the GPS on your phone during your road trip in Andalucia.

Pack a cell phone holder to attach to the car and you’ll be able to drive much more safely!

Jordan Pass — I already mentioned this above, but it bears repeating!

With this itinerary for Jordan, you will absolutely benefit from pre-purchasing a Jordan Pass.

Additional Car Insurance  — Whether you purchase a policy that covers car rental (only some do, so double-check!), purchase a policy through the rental car company, or something else, be sure you have coverage: it’s worth the peace of mind.

view of amman from top of the citadel, as seen on a itinerary for jordan in 6 days

Portable USB Charger — Don’t stress about your phone dying when sightseeing or camping!

Our USB charger was a lifesaver during our night camping in Wadi Rum, as the plugs at our camp weren’t compatible with our devices.

Camera  — We absolutely adore our  Sony a7R III , but whatever camera you’re comfortable with works.

Just make sure you have something with you to preserve your memories!

Lovely!! Very much interested on the trip. Please email me the itinerary with details. I am interested visiting August 5 2023. Thank you Mercedes

Hi Mercedes,

So glad you found our itinerary helpful! 🙂

We’re not tour guides or travel agents, so we can’t plan or book tours for you. We do have some well-reviewed guided tours linked in the post under the section where I talk about options if you don’t want to drive in Jordan.

Hope you have a wonderful trip to Jordan!

My husband and I are planning to visit Jordan for 7 nights early March 2024. Our preferred stay would be 2 nights in Amman on arrival. 2 nights Petra / 1 night Dead Sea / 1 night Wadi Rum / Last night in Amman again. Would be grateful if you could please suggest an iterinary – not necessary the same sequence mentioned above (except Amman).

Thanks a ton.

Essentially with those stops, you’ll either want to make your way south slowly and then have your “long” driving day (not that the drive is too long in Jordan!) at the end of your trip, or vice versa–take the longest drive at the beginning of your trip and then slowly work your way back north.

With the first option, you’d want to go Amman – Dead Sea – Petra – Wadi Rum – Amman, the second option would be to reverse it: Amman – Wadi Rum – Petra – Dead Sea – Amman.

Personally, since you’re spending a couple nights in Amman to start, I’d tend to recommend the second option. That way, you’ll be doing the most active traveling earlier in your trip, and end with a final relaxing stop at the Dead Sea. 🙂

Our flight arrive at Amman airport is late at night about 10pm, and departure time is early about 10am. Do you know if any car rental company would still be open for car pickup late at night , and car drop off early in the morning? Thanks

Not offhand, but I’d check the locations at the airport–they’ll likely have the most extended hours. Alternatively, if you’re spending the night in Amman, you could take a taxi into the city for your first night and then pickup a rental car at an in-town location the next morning (just make sure to confirm you want to drop off at the airport when you leave).

Have a great time in Jordan!

We had a great time on our 4-day tour of Jordan. Our driver, Mohammed, was wonderful – very kind and welcoming, knowledgeable, and he went out of his way to make sure we had a great trip. The Dead Sea was beautiful and relaxing, Petra was stunning, Wadi Rum was an amazing experience, and Aqaba City was a fun place to explore. Overall, it was a fantastic trip and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Jordan.

10-day Jordan itinerary: An unforgettable Jordan road trip

jordan day trips

My trip to Jordan, the land of mysterious ruins, red deserts and ancient history, completely exceeded my expectations. The country is often considered one of the best destinations to visit in the Middle East and after spending 10 days in Jordan, I can easily understand what all the hype is about!

In this post, I’m sharing my 10-day Jordan itinerary that takes you across this beautiful country – from the history-packed capital Amman in the north all the way to the Red Sea coast in the south. Along the way, you’ll get to explore amazing UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Petra and Wadi Rum, visit the lowest point on Earth and discover natural wonders both on land and in the sea.

I’ve also included my tips on where to stay on each of the days and my Jordan itinerary map which gives you an overview of where everything is located. At the end of the post, you can also find my recommendations for what to do if you have more than 10 days in Jordan.

Taking a Jordan road trip or a guided tour

This itinerary is designed to be a self-drive itinerary, so I recommend getting a rental car and embarking on a Jordan road trip. Since some of Jordan’s top attractions (like the Dead Sea or Wadi Rum) are located in relatively remote areas that are difficult to reach by public transport, the best way to travel around is by car.

Driving in Jordan was a lot easier than I expected. The roads are in pretty good condition, easy to navigate and uncrowded (outside of Amman).

Read my detailed guide to driving in Jordan for everything you need to know for a safe and fun driving experience.

A woman standing on a beach covered in salt crystals at Dead Sea, one of the best places to visit on this 10-day Jordan itinerary

Alternatively, if you don’t feel like driving yourself, you can still have a wonderful time in Jordan by taking guided tours. Most tours depart from Amman (the capital) or Aqaba (a city on the Red Sea coast).

Here are some tours that allow you to just sit back, relax and let somebody else do all the driving for you:

  • A 9-day tour from Amman that takes you all around Jordan and covers all the destinations I’ve included in this post (except for the Wadi Mujib canyon)
  • A 3-day tour from Amman covering Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea and Aqaba

Tip: Before traveling to Jordan, buy yourself the Jordan Pass . It’s an official ‘ticket’ intended for tourists and covers both your Jordan visa fee and entry tickets to all the top attractions (e.g. Petra and Wadi Rum).

10-day Jordan itinerary: The perfect Jordan road trip route

Day 1: arrive in amman.

Most people arrive in Jordan by flying into Queen Alia International Airport near Amman. Therefore, this will be the starting point of this 10-day Jordan itinerary. Alternatively, you could also fly to Aqaba and simply follow the itinerary in reverse.

You can either rent a car at the airport right away or do it the next morning in Amman. To get from the airport to the city, which is about 30 km (19 mi) away, you’ll have the option to take a bus, taxi or a private transfer .

On the first day, I recommend taking it easy. Take your time to recover from jet lag, withdraw some local currency and buy a local sim card so you can have mobile data throughout your Jordan trip. You’ll have more time to explore all the best attractions of Amman at the end of your trip.

For dinner, head to the buzzing Rainbow Street in downtown Amman. Here you’ll find a variety of cool coffee shops, bars and restaurants. I recommend checking out Cozy Casa, Cantaloupe Gastro Pub and Mijana.

Accommodation

MID-RANGE: Hotel Philosophy A fabulous boutique hotel with vibrant artsy design and a great restaurant, located just a short walk from Rainbow Street.

LUXURY: Hilton Amman A brand new 5-star hotel that opened in October 2022. The hotel offers stylish rooms with contemporary design, a gym and a luxurious spa perfect for pampering yourself after the long flight.

Day 2: Visit the Dead Sea

On day 2, pick up your rental car and kick off your Jordan road trip by driving to the Dead Sea, which is just an hour’s drive from Amman.

The Dead Sea is a saltwater lake situated on the border between Israel (West Bank) and Jordan. What’s so special about this lake is that it sits 430m (1410 ft) below sea level and is therefore the lowest land point on Earth.

A woman sitting on a Dead Sea beach covered with white salt formations

With almost 10 times higher salinity than the oceans, the water in the Dead Sea makes you float effortlessly. It’s such a unique sensation! To bathe in the Dead Sea, you can visit a free public beach or a private beach at one of the 5-star resorts by the sea. I recommend doing both.

First, head to a public beach just south of Wadi Mujib (I’ve marked the exact location on the map at the end of this post). Here the entire shoreline of the beach is covered with shimmering white salt crystals. If you plan to go into the water, bring water shoes because the crystals are sharp. Also, bring a bottle of water to rinse yourself after floating in the Dead Sea because you’ll have a layer of salt on your skin.

Then check into one of the resorts by the Dead Sea and enjoy their private sandy beaches. The resorts offer their guests free Dead Sea mud, which is known for its many benefits for the skin. So lather yourself up and give your body a healing treatment.

A woman floating in the Dead Sea in Jordan at sunset

There’s only a handful of accommodation options by the Dead Sea and almost all of them are 5-star hotels. I highly recommend splurging on this one night and staying by the Dead Sea!

LUXURY: Hilton Dead Sea Resort This is where we stayed. From the fantastic pool areas and the sunset views over the Dead Sea to the amazing restaurants and incredibly kind staff, everything about our stay here was wonderful!

LUXURY: Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea The most famous resort in the area. With its Babylon-inspired design, 9 different pools, upscale amenities and world-class service, this hotel offers an exceptional level of luxury.

Day 3: Explore Wadi Mujib & drive to Wadi Musa

Start the third day of your Jordan itinerary by heading to the Wadi Mujib Adventure Center and getting ready for an epic canyoning experience.

Canyoning in the Wadi Mujib river gorge was one of the things I was looking forward to the most on my Jordan trip. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the visitor center, we found out the gorge was closed due to some collapsed rocks, so I never got to do it. (The problem with the fallen rocks has been resolved and the gorge is open for visitors again.)

Orange sandstone cliffs at the Wadi Mujib river canyon

There are several trails to choose from at Wadi Mujib but the most popular one is the Siq Trail, which meanders along the river bed between towering sandstone cliffs. The trek through the gorge is an exhilarating experience that involves hiking, swimming through pools of water and pulling yourself up rocks using ropes. At the end of the trail, you’ll be rewarded with a view of a waterfall.

Since this is a highly popular attraction, arrive early in the morning. Otherwise, the site might reach its capacity limits and you might not get in.

After visiting Wadi Mujib, continue your Jordan road trip by driving along the scenic King’s Highway (road 35) to Wadi Musa. This is the gateway town to the world-famous Lost City of Petra, which you will be exploring over the next two days.

Spend the next three nights in Wadi Musa.

MID-RANGE: Petra Plaza Hotel A small cozy hotel with exceptionally friendly staff and fantastic breakfast, located in the center of Wadi Musa.

LUXURY: Mövenpick Resort Petra A fabulous 5-star hotel situated just a few steps from Petra Visitor Center. It features an outdoor pool, a fitness room and a rooftop garden terrace with views over the hills of Petra.

Day 4 & 5: Discover the wonders of Petra

No trip to Jordan is complete without visiting the ancient city of Petra, the most famous landmark in the country. This fascinating archaeological site is located right next to the town of Wadi Musa and the entrance ticket is included in the Jordan Pass.

Even if you don’t plan to rent a car for your Jordan trip, you can still easily and conveniently visit Petra, since there are many different tour options available from Amman.

A woman sitting on a cliff overlooking the Treasury in Petra, a mandatory stop in every 10-day Jordan itinerary

Not only is Petra a UNESCO World Heritage Site but it has also been chosen as one of the 7 New Wonders of the World, so including it in this 10 day Jordan itinerary was a no-brainer. It is hands down one of the coolest archaeological sites I’ve ever been to and is worth all the hype!

From the majestic awe-inspiring ruins carved into the rocks to the incredible slot canyon ‘Siq’ and the colorful sandstone cliffs, this ancient Nabataean city has a lot to offer. With its beautiful views and an abundance of cool photo spots, it’s easily one of the most Instagrammable places in Jordan .

Most people come to Petra for just one day but I highly recommend spending two days here since the site is massive. We walked around 25 km (15 mi) on each of the days in Petra – there’s just so much to see! Two days gives you enough time to explore both the famous monuments like the Treasury and the Monastery but also discover some hidden gems, like the Al Khubtha trail.

The Royal Tombs of Petra, mausoleums carved out of rose red sandstone by Nabataeans

Every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evening, you can attend the Petra by Night event. There you can see the Treasury illuminated by hundreds of candles and listen to live music played by locals.

I had mixed feelings about Petra by Night though. While the candlelit ruins looked magical, the ‘performance’ was very underwhelming. However, some people claim that Petra by Night was the highlight of their Jordan vacation, so perhaps we just got unlucky.

The Treasury of Petra illuminated by candles during the Petra by Night event

Spend another two nights at Petra Plaza Hotel or Mövenpick Resort Petra (see Day 3 for more details).

Day 6: Explore the Wadi Rum desert

After two days in Petra, it’s time to move on to visit another one of Jordan’s top attractions – the magnificent desert of Wadi Rum.

With its giant red sand dunes, sandstone mountains and rock formations, this place looks like it’s from another planet. It’s easy to see why it was chosen as the filming location for many famous movies such as The Martian, Dune and Star Wars, to name a few.

The red sand dunes and rugged mountains of Wadi Rum should be a part of every 10-day Jordan itinerary

The most common way to experience the magic of Wadi Rum is to take a jeep tour and spend a night in a Bedouin-style desert camp. The jeep tour, which can usually be arranged by your camp, takes you to all the main attractions, such as rock arches, viewpoints, ancient petroglyphs and large dunes where you can try sandboarding.

Make sure to also find a good spot to watch the sunset and enjoy the spectacular view as the sun turns the desert vivid orange.

For more tips on visiting Wadi Rum and a map with all the main attractions in the desert, check out my detailed post on the 10 best things to do in Wadi Rum .

The Wadi Rum desert camps range from ultra-cheap ones with very simple tents to upscale camps with luxurious glamping domes.

MID-RANGE: Sand Star Camp This is where we stayed and it was really good value for money. Our tent was clean, warm and comfy, the food was delicious and the location of the camp was great. The only downside was that the guide on our jeep tour didn’t explain much about the places we visited.

LUXURY: Memories Aicha Luxury Camp This is the most famous and the most luxurious place to stay in Wadi Rum. Their lavish panoramic domes, the lounge area and the entire campsite look absolutely breathtaking. It’s like a Mars colony!

Day 7 & 8: Relax in Aqaba by the Red Sea

Continue your Jordan itinerary by driving to Aqaba, which is about an hour away. Located on the coast of the Red Sea, this city is known for its beach resorts and is a fantastic destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.

It is not recommended to wear a bikini on public beaches in Aqaba. Therefore, if you want to bask in the sun, I suggest you stay in a resort that has a private beach or buy a day pass to one of the beach clubs.

We visited Berenice Beach Club, which is a great and affordable place to spend a relaxing day by the sea. Besides their own private beach area, they have several pools, sun beds, a restaurant and snorkeling gear for rent.

On our second day in Aqaba, we went scuba diving with Deep Blue Dive Center and had the most amazing time exploring the underwater world of the Red Sea. During our two dives, we saw beautiful coral pinnacles and lots of colorful marine life such as an octopus, a moray eel, a boxfish, lionfish etc. as well as a sunken tank, a sunken plane and a large shipwreck!

It was definitely one of the highlights of this 10-day Jordan itinerary. They also offer snorkeling tours if you’re not into scuba diving.

Those that don’t want to get in the water but still want to see the wonderful marine life have the opportunity to take this 2-hour glass-bottom boat tour instead.

Spend the next two nights in Aqaba.

MID-RANGE: Laverda Hotel This little boutique hotel offers cozy, tastefully decorated rooms with sea views and is situated in the center of the city, near all the shops and restaurants.

LUXURY: Kempinski Hotel Aqaba A modern 5-star beachfront resort with an outdoor pool, wellness center, a private sandy beach and a central location in Aqaba.

Day 9: Return to Amman

On the 9th day of your Jordan road trip, drive all the way back to Amman. It’s a 330 km (205 mi) journey and should take a little over 4 hours. If you start driving early enough, you’ll have plenty of time to do some sightseeing in Amman.

The most famous attraction in the city is Amman Citadel. This archaeological site is home to various ancient ruins and the entry is included in the Jordan Pass. It sits on the highest hill in Amman and offers panoramic views of the city around it. Come here at sunset for the best views.

A woman standing between ancient tall columns at Amman Citadel during sunset

Other sights you might want to visit are King Abdullah I Mosque and the Roman Amphitheater.

For lunch or dinner, head to the highly popular restaurant Hashem. It’s a super affordable local eatery selling authentic Middle Eastern cuisine such as falafels, hummus, fava bean dip, mint tea and more.

Multiple plates with Middle Eastern food such as falafels, hummus and foul mudammas at Hashem restaurant

Spend your last night in the same place as the first night – in Hotel Philosophy or Hilton Amman (see Day 1 for more details).

Day 10: Fly out

It’s time to wrap up your Jordan trip. Depending on when your flight departs, you might be able to squeeze in a few more activities. You could visit some attractions in Amman that you didn’t have time for the day before or you could take a day trip to Jerash , a sprawling complex of ancient Roman ruins.

Jerash is an hour’s drive from Amman and features well-preserved colonnaded streets, amphitheaters, temples and monumental arches. The entrance ticket is included in the Jordan Pass.

Have more than 10 days in Jordan?

If you’re lucky to have more than 10 days in Jordan and want to add more activities to your itinerary, take a look at the following places to visit and things to do:

  • Visit Dana Biosphere Reserve – the largest nature reserve in Jordan and an area known for its hiking trails and wildlife
  • Take a Desert Castles tour – get off the beaten path on this 6-hour tour to eastern Jordan and the ancient Umayyad desert castles
  • Relax at Ma’In Hot Springs – enjoy the gorgeous thermal waterfall and natural hot springs at the 5-star Ma’In Hot Springs resort
  • Visit Mount Nebo – a mountain with a religious significance; it’s said to be the place where Moses saw the Promised Land before he died
  • Explore Little Petra – a site similar to Petra but way smaller and less crowded

Jordan 7 Day Itinerary: The Perfect Week Trip (2023 Guide)

Some links in this post contain affiliate links. I receive a small commission if you use the links at no extra cost to you! Happy reading 😀

Wondering how to spend a week in Jordan? I’ve got you covered. This is the perfect Jordan 7-day itinerary for anyone visiting the country for the first time (or second, third or fourth!)

Jordan is located in the Middle East in Asia , and is a predominantly Muslim country. It has a population of around 10 million, and offers hot and sunny weather all year round. A country full of culture and tradition, there’s something rather special about visiting Jordan for the first time and spending a week there.

From Petra, one of the Wonders of the World, to historical landmarks, sandy beaches, busy cities, a desert, crystal clear waters and the lowest sea on earth – the Dead Sea, it’s a wonderful country to travel to (and can easily be done on a backpacker’s budget).

Jordan 7 day I tinerary: A Summary

This 7-day Jordan itinerary includes all of the highlights of Jordan.  Below I’ve broken it down into a quick list (if you don’t have time to read the whole blog post), but I’ve also given more detail in the sections below.

There is also a FAQ section about this Jordan 7-day itinerary for any questions you may have.

🚗 NOTE: This itinerary is designed for travellers hiring a car.  🚗 Jordan has very little public transport. It can be done with a private driver, but this will cost a lot more than renting a car yourself.

Wifi isn’t always widely available in Jordan, although it is improving. I recommend either buying a local SIM card or buying an eSIM . ESIMs are easy to download and ready to use within a few minutes of purchasing. You can check out Jordan eSIMs here!

The perfect Jordan 7-day itinerary and route

  • Day 1: Fly into Amman and explore the city
  • Day 2: Wake up early and visit Jerash , then drive to the Dead Sea. Stay either near the Dead Sea or continue driving to Petra for the evening.
  • Day 3: Petra and Petra by night (if you’re there on a Monday, Wednesday or Thursday)
  • Day 4: Petra during the day, driving to Wadi Rum late afternoon/evening.
  • Day 5: Wadi Rum 4×4 through the desert tour.
  • Day 6: Drive to Aqaba .
  • Day 7: Either fly out of Aqaba or drive back to Amman .

This 7-day Jordan itinerary can be changed to suit you and how much time you want in each area. However, this plan is just a good starting point and includes all of the major things to do in Jordan!

This itinerary also includes a lot of driving . Your longest drive will be Aqaba > Amman, which can take around 4 hours. You might want to consider this when booking flights!

Getting around Jordan

Hiring a car is the best way to get around Jordan. Public transport in Jordan isn’t reliable or regular, and even the buses that do run only go into the big cities. Travelling to places like Wadi Rum and Petra will be easier if you have your own car.

If you’re not sure about driving in Jordan yourself, be sure to check out my post: Driving in Jordan: The Ultimate Car Hire Guide .

Alternatively, if you’d rather leave the driving to someone else, you can hire a private driver . You can hire a driver either for the day or a few days, and pay the price and a tip at the end. This will of course be more expensive, but it still gives you the choice to drive to where you want to.

➡ Check out private driver options here!

Do I need a car to travel around Jordan?

Driving in Jordan is safe and straightforward. Some of the main attractions are a distance away from each other, so to maximise your time in the country, you may want to hire a car .

what to do in Wadi Rum

Day 1: Amman

🌌 Number of nights: 2-3

🛌 Where to stay : Nomads Hostel

🚗 Driving time from Amman airport: 30 minutes

Amman is the capital city of Jordan and home to the international Queen Alia airport, so it’s likely you will begin your trip here. Situated in the north of the country, Amman is one of the most liberal and Westernised Arab cities in the Middle East. There’s no strict dress code, but I still felt the need to cover up and go by my Jordan dress code .

Depending on your flight arrival time to Jordan, or what sort of things you like to do in cities, there are a few parts of Amman you don’t want to miss. We stayed at Nomads Hostel in a private room for under £30 a night . It was within walking distance of one of the most popular roads in the city, Rainbow Street.

Even if you’re not staying close to Rainbow Street, I advise checking it out for its hippy-vibe bars and fun restaurants! Thursday nights are when it’s the most lively, as that’s when Jordanians officially start their weekend.

If you’re into your history, check out the Temple of Hercules , and the 2000+ years old Roman Theatre. The venue is still used for concerts and events from time to time and can seat up to 6000 people. Entry is free, so it’s a great idea for budget backpackers.

Dress appropriately and visit the King Abdullah Mosque, which is located in the city centre. It’s easily recognisable with its blue-domed roof and gigantic size.

If I could change anything about my trip to Jordan, it would be to plan a bit longer in Amman. Reading other travel blogs I realise just how much we missed. Although it does mean I can now convince Tom to make another trip back to Jordan!

Where to stay in Amman

Day 2: Jerash and the Dead Sea

🛌 Where to stay : The Crowne Plaza

🚗 Driving time from Amman: 50 minutes

If you already have your car, I suggest waking up early to start your second day in Jordan. Start your drive by heading 50 minutes north to the ancient ruins of Jerash. The ruins date back to over 2000 years ago , and Jerash is known as the most well-preserved Roman city site outside of Italy.

Spend your morning taking photos and learning about the history of Jordan before driving 90 minutes to the Dead Sea.

The Dead Sea

The second activity of your day will be driving to the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west. The lake’s surface is 430 metres below sea level, making it the lowest lake in the world.

Due to the amount of salt in the water, you’re able to float effortlessly. Before entering the water, be sure to cover your skin in the Dead Sea mud, which lays on the shores by the coastline. The Dead Sea mud is known to enhance skin elasticity and wrinkes, as well as skin conditions like eczema and acne. It’s a bit messy, but it’s an experience!

It’s not recommended to spend longer than 20 minutes at a time in the Dead Sea, due to the high salt concentration. We found we still had time to read a book and relax before becoming quite thirsty and needing to exit the water.

One of the best and easiest ways to visit the Dead Sea is by paying for access via a hotel. As the lake is a lot lower than the road, it can take some time to find the best public beach, and they can be tricky to get to.

If you have the budget, you can pay one of the hotels for an unlimited buffet lunch and access to their beachfront on the Dead Sea. When we visited in 2022, we paid £30 each for beach access and a meal at the Crowne Plaza.

Where to stay near the Dead Sea

NOTE: If you do not want to stay near the Dead Sea or Jerash, you can stay in Amman and complete these as day trips. Then, from Amman, you can travel to Petra, which is next on the list. Not sure where to stay in Amman? Check out my detailed area guide for Amman here.

If you do want to stay near the Dead Sea, these are some of the best hotels with private Dead Sea access.

Day 3 + 4: Petra and Petra by Night

🛌 Where to stay :   Petra Moon Hotel .

🚗 Driving time from the Dead Sea: 2.5 hours (188km)

Petra is an ancient lost city and is now known as one of the seven wonders of the world; and also a UNESCO World Heritage site. The buildings are half-built and half-carved into the rock, surrounded by mountains and full of narrow passageways and gorges.

Due to Petra being such a unique tourist attraction, it is one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites, and can get extremely busy.

I recommend budgeting at least 5-8 hours whilst visiting Petra by day. The site in itself is over a hundred square miles ; which is four times the size of Manhattan, New York!

When visiting, you don’t need to walk to every corner of the site, but you will be given a map to see which rock-carved buildings and sites interest you the most.

The most famous is The Treasury, which is around a 30-minute walk from Petra’s entrance. This is where you’ll have your Instagram photos and climb to high rock faces to see the Treasury from different angles.

Petra is busy at any time of day, but we found the quietest time to be around 3pm in the afternoon. Most of the tourist buses and coaches arrive early in the morning and have left by this time.

➡ Need more information about Petra? Check out my full Petra guide here.

jordan day trips

Optional extra: Petra by Night

Petra by Night is slightly different to visiting Petra during the day. It’s a different ticket, and you’ll need to exit before returning to Petra at Night. It also is not included in your Jordan pass.

Petra by Night takes place on a Monday, Wednesday or Thursday (at the time of writing this in October 2022). Tickets cost around £20, and the event lasts around 2 hours in total.

As you arrive at Petra, there will be a large line to re-enter and walk by candlelight down to the Treasury. When you arrive at the Treasury, you will sit on traditional Jordanian mats and watch a short performance by some locals playing instruments and storytelling.

Sadly, Petra by Night is an incredibly popular activity, which means it may be hard to even see the performers. If you want to experience it for yourself, my best advice is to arrive early to snag a seat at the front.

My unpopular opinion? If you’re tired from Petra by day, or haven’t got the budget for Petra by night, don’t worry about it. It’s a beautiful experience but it’s not something I would change my itinerary around for, and we much preferred Petra by day.

Note that Petra is located in the town of Wadi Musa. It’s easy to get around Wadi Musa by car or taxi, so don’t worry about staying too close to the actual Petra site if you’re on a tight budget.

Day 4 + 5: Wadi Rum

🛌 Where to stay: UFO Luxotel Bubble Camp

🚗 Driving time from Petra : 2 hours (114km)

Next, head to Wadi Rum, the largest desert in Jordan. Wadi Rum covers around 183,352 acres of land and is one of the most unique and incredible landscapes we have ever seen.

As you enter Wadi Rum, it becomes clear why so many space movies are shot here. Famously known as being the set of the Matt Damon movie; The Martian, it’s not hard to see why! Most of the sand is a bright shade of red, with jagged, unique rocks and boulders across the landscape.

There are many things to do in Wadi Rum, including staying in a unique bubble tent that allows you to star gaze from underneath your duvet. Even on a backpacker’s budget, you can book a tour to drive in a 4×4 over sand dunes and to some of the historical sites, as tours can be as cheap as £20/$25 per person from your hotel!

One of the best experiences and things to do in Wadi Rum is to meet and talk with the local Bedouins. We found them to be warm and welcoming people who enjoy telling you stories of their past and culture, with an invite to join their tent for tea and a night of dancing. We also took part in a stargazing trip organised by our hotel , which was one of the best things we did during our trip to Wadi Rum.

Day 6: Aqaba

🌌 Number of nights: 1-2

🛌 Where to stay: Lacosta Hotel

🚗 Driving time from Wadi Rum: 1 hour 10 minutes (80km)

The final part of your 7 day road trip around Jordan is visiting Aqaba. Aqaba is the only coastal city in Jordan . It borders both the Red Sea and Israel, and on a clear day, you can see directly into the Israeli city opposite!

Aqaba is around an hour’s drive south of Wadi Rum . It’s one of the best places in Jordan to scuba dive and snorkel, because of the colourful corals and crystal-clear waters. Even if you don’t want to swim, Aqaba is an interesting and vibrant city with lots to explore. It is also home to Jordan’s second international airport, King Hussein Int’l.

We felt safe throughout our stay in Aqaba, and even felt safe walking around at night. In fact, we found the nighttime markets to be when Aqaba really came alive!

Where to stay in Aqaba

If you need a night or two’s accommodation in Aqaba, I recommend the following places to stay.

💸 For budget backpackers: check out Hakaia Home . It’s one of the best hostels in Aqaba and is only a seven-minute walk from the JETT bus station. ➡ BOOK THIS HOSTEL NOW!

🇯🇴 For couples: check out Lacosta Hotel . It’s a 4* hotel in a central location and has its own area of private beach. ➡ BOOK THIS HOTEL NOW!

Day 7: Onward travel from Aqaba or Amman

Aqaba is home to King Hussein International Airport , so you can either book your onward flight from here or drive back to Amman .

The drive back to Amman will take around 4 hours. It is a direct route via Desert Highway or the coastal road. Both are incredibly safe and easy to follow, but if you are unsure about driving in Jordan, be sure to check out my detailed driving tips for Jordan here.

Jordan 7 day itinerary: FAQs

1) what is the jordan pass and do i need to buy one.

If you want to save money whilst visiting Jordan, the Jordan Pass is worth it.  As it covers both your visa entry fees and gives you access to most of the main attractions, the Jordan Pass is worth buying.

The Jordan Pass also includes queue jumps at the airport and at some locations. As Jordan is becoming increasingly popular, this can save you a lot of time. If we were to break whether having a Jordan Pass is worth it down or not, we would see that:

💰  A tourist visa on arrival is £45 ($50) and a day trip to Petra  (without a Jordan Pass) is £100 ($110). This totals £145 ($150) already.

🪪  The total price for a Jordan Pass is £80 ($100)  if you are only visiting Petra for one day. This alone makes the Jordan Pass worth it.

So, in summary,  yes – buying a Jordan Pass is worth it!

➡ Need more information? Check out my detailed Jordan Pass post here.

2) What time of year should you visit Jordan?

☀️ I f you visit Jordan during the summer months (June to August),  expect high temperatures and stifling, hot weather. Days in Jordan in the summer are exceptionally sunny and dry.

🌸 🍁  Autumn and spring are the best times to visit Jordan.  Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) have cooler temperatures and evenings.

3) What to wear and pack for Jordan

Jordan is a predominantly Muslim country  (with over 95% of all Jordanians practising the Islamic faith).  This means most women will be wearing some sort of covering, with hijabs, al-amiras and khimars being the most common.

You do not need to wear a face covering, hijab, al-amira or khimar in Jordan if you are a tourist.  If you aren’t religious and  don’t normally wear a covering,   this is not expected of you.

Wear what you feel comfortable wearing in Jordan, as long as your shoulders and legs (down to your knees) are covered. It’s more about respect for their culture and religion than a ‘hard and fast’ rule.  No one’s going to ‘tell you off’,  but you’re going to feel uncomfortable showing excess skin or your cleavage.

It’s also a level of respect that you can show the Jordanian locals , plus not causing too much-unwanted attention.

what to wear in jordan

4) Are 7 days enough for Jordan?

If it’s your first time in Jordan, I recommend at least seven days. This gives you enough time to see the major sites in the country without rushing. It also gives you more time for long drives and leeway if something doesn’t go to plan.

5) Is Jordan cheap to travel?

Jordan is one of the most budget-friendly destinations in the Middle East , but it still isn’t ‘cheap’. Buying the Jordan Pass will help you save money on activities and your visa, and it is recommended that all tourists buy the Jordan Pass before entering the country.

As mid-range backpackers, we were able to travel around Jordan comfortably. The most expensive restaurants were around the tourist sites like Petra, which we avoided. Seek out the smaller, more local places to eat to save money, and avoid eating near any of the main attractions.

6)  What tours should I do in Jordan?

Looking to book a tour in Jordan?  Tours  are one of the best ways to see the  hidden gems of the country you are visiting.  If you’re travelling during peak season, I highly recommend pre-booking your tours to ensure you don’t miss out!

When travelling, we use   this company to book our tours .  Tours include skip-the-line tickets to the world’s most iconic attractions, walking tours by top local experts, immersive food and beverage tours, cooking and craft classes, bucket list experiences, and niche offerings you won’t find anywhere else!

  • Scuba diving in the Red Sea ➡  BOOK NOW!
  • Private Petra tour with transfers ➡  BOOK NOW!
  • Day trip to the Dead Sea from Amman ➡  BOOK NOW!

7)  Do I need a SIM card to travel around Jordan?

Yes, it’s worth   downloading an eSIM  on your phone to ensure you can use it for directions and avoid roaming charges as soon as you arrive.

ESIMs  are easy to download and ready to use within a few minutes of purchasing, so there’s no longer a need to hunt down free Wifi! ➡  You can check out the prices and packages for  eSIMs here!

I had only one day to tour Moscow. After researching many tours, I chose the Discover Moscow walking tour. Despite the cold weather, the tour was fantastic. Tanya was my guide and was great. She is a walking encyclopedia of history and facts and was able to answer every question I threw at her plus some. Thanks for a great day! PS – opted for the optional professional photos which I highly recommend as well. Well done to all of you at Moscow tours

Opinion | How a tenacious reporter revealed Sen. Katie Britt’s SOTU response to be ‘beyond misleading’

Britt tied an anecdote about a woman who survived sex trafficking to biden’s border policies. but it happened during the george w. bush admin..

jordan day trips

Last Thursday was President Joe Biden’s big State of the Union address.

Most agree that Biden had a good night, showing the vim and vigor that certainly threw cold water on the narrative that he is this doddering old man incapable of running the country. He was so energetic that Fox News’ Jesse Watters ridiculously said , “This guy is on speed or something.”

But who knew that it would be the Republican response to the State of the Union, usually an afterthought that is quickly forgotten, that would leave a lasting impression.

Alabama junior Sen. Katie Britt, considered a rising star in the party and maybe even a dark horse to be Donald Trump’s running mate, delivered one of the most memorable State of the Union responses of all time.

That isn’t meant as a compliment.

It was a speech that has been widely panned and mocked, including by some in her own party and conservative media. It also turns out that one of the major points in Britt’s speech was misleading — as discovered by one tenacious reporter.

Her speech could easily have been dismissed for being overly dramatic to the point of humor, but there was something more to be picked apart. Britt also was called out for a story she told during her response. Britt told the tale of going to the border and meeting a woman who survived being sex trafficked. Britt relayed meeting the woman and said, “We wouldn’t be OK with this happening in a Third World country. This is the United States of America, and it is past time, in my opinion, that we start acting like it. President Biden’s border policies are a disgrace.”

Britt never gave an exact timeline, but her words seemed to imply this happened during Biden’s time as president.

But former Associated Press reporter Jonathan Katz put out a video on social media, saying Britt was “beyond misleading.” ( Here’s Katz’s TikTok video.) The woman Britt appeared to be talking about is Karla Jacinto Romero, who testified before Congress about being the victim of sex trafficking by Mexican cartels years ago when she was 12. She was at a roundtable discussion at the border last year with Britt and two other senators.

Katz said if Romero is who Britt was talking about, then the horrific events that Romero experienced happened outside of the U.S. during George W. Bush’s administration. A spokesperson for Britt confirmed to The Associated Press’ Emily Wagster Pettus and The Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler that Romero was the person Britt was referring to.

Britt was roundly criticized for her story — from Kessler giving her “four Pinocchios” to “Saturday Night Live” roasting her in a hilarious and scorching cold open.

And yet, Britt was vague during an appearance on Sunday’s “Fox News Sunday.” Moderator Shannon Bream asked, “Did you mean to give the impression that this horrible story happened on President Biden’s watch?”

Britt said, “No. … Look, I very specifically said this is what President Biden did during his first 100 days. Minutes after coming into office, he stopped all deportations. He halted construction of the border wall. And he said, ‘I am going to give amnesty to millions,’ those types of things. Act as a magnet to have more and more people here. I then said in his first 100 days he had 94 executive actions. And those executive actions didn’t just create the crisis. They invited it. I then contrasted it with my first 100 days. Shannon, I went to the border three times in my first 100 days in office, and when I was there, I asked for the real, unvarnished truth. I wanted to sit down. I asked the Border Patrol agents. I asked the people there. I asked the victims, previous victims of drug cartels: ‘Tell me what it’s like. Tell me what we need to do. Tell me what we need to know.’”

But, Bream wouldn’t let that answer sit and, appropriately, pushed some more, asking Britt, “But to be clear, the story that you relate is not something that’s happened under the Biden administration, that particular person?”

Britt danced around some more, never really clarifying her story. But good job by Bream for multiple questions about it.

According to Mediaite’s Joe DePaolo , White House spokesperson Andrew Bates put out a statement that said, “Instead of telling more debunked lies to justify opposing the toughest bipartisan border legislation in modern history, Sen. Britt should stop choosing human smugglers and fentanyl traffickers over our national security and the Border Patrol Union. Like President Biden said in his State of the Union, ‘We have a simple choice: We can fight about fixing the border or we can fix it.’”

Talking to Katz …

Journalist and Flaming Hydra newsletter writer Maria Bustillos had a Q&A with her colleague Katz , who explained how he quickly discovered that Britt’s sex trafficking story was misleading in its attempts to blame Biden.

Katz did a simple Google search and realized Britt was likely talking about Britt’s trip to the border in January 2023, where she was on a roundtable with Romero, who is now 31 years old.

Katz told Bustillos, “I don’t know why nobody else picked up on that, because the big detail that got my attention was that she says that the trafficking had started when this woman was 12, and well, then that can’t — Joe Biden’s only been president for three years, so he can’t — it made no sense. Who’s getting trafficked back and forth across the Rio Grande? Something is just not adding up here.”

Katz also carefully dissected Britt’s anecdote, and he explains how Britt crossed the line in being misleading in tying it to Biden. Check out the entire Q&A.

A red hot cold open

I mentioned above that “Saturday Night Live” came out hot in its cold open in destroying Britt for her over-the-top State of the Union response that came off like a bad soliloquy from a poorly acted junior high school play.

A-list actress Scarlett Johansson, who is married to “SNL” writer and “Weekend Update” anchor Colin Jost, played Britt and absolutely killed it.

Just a week ago in this newsletter, I was pounding “SNL” for its predictable and boring political cold opens. But this one was right on the money.

The Daily Beast’s Jennifer M. Wood wrote that it was “SNL’s” best cold open in months and that Johansson nailed it, adding, “Johansson perfectly captured Britt’s now-viral theatrics, including her jarring changes in tone and sound level and audibly visible dissection of syllables.”

Aside from spoofing Britt’s speech pattern and clownish attempts at being dramatic, the open had two superb detours. At one point, it had Johansson turning the speech into a sales pitch for jewelry on QVC.

And, CNN’s Dan Heching noted it had a “well-placed spoof of Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning racial satire ‘Get Out,’ when Johansson took out a teacup and stirred it, causing Kenan Thompson to freeze with a tear falling down his face.”

That “Get Out” reference was a moment of comedy brilliance on a skit that had already hit it out of the park.

The Atlantic had high praise for Johansson , calling it a “pitch-perfect impression,” with Esther Zuckerman writing, “… this interpretation of Britt was everything a great actor’s impression of a public figure should be. She accurately captured the politician’s intensity, then heightened it just enough to emphasize its absurdity.”

Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo, shown here in 2019. (AP Photo/Andrew Harnik)

Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo used to be a legitimate and respected journalist. What happened to her?

She actually said this Sunday during her “Sunday Morning Futures” program while discussing immigration with Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump: “I had a friend the other day tell me she was standing at a food truck, two gentlemen approached her. One had tattoos all over his face. They looked like illegals, she said, and one had a clipboard and he said to her, “Hello, miss, do you want to sign up to be a Democrat and vote?’”

For starters, I’m not sure I buy Bartiromo’s anecdote. Seems like a lot of times on Fox, on-air hosts have stories about “friends” who just happen to have a story that fits whatever Fox News is trying to sell that day. But let’s say Bartiromo’s story really happened. The question I’d have for her — or, sorry, her friend — is what do “illegals” look like? That’s shameful language.

Photo controversy

Kate, the Princess of Wales, had abdominal surgery two months ago and hasn’t been seen in public since then. In fact, she hasn’t been seen publicly since Christmas Day, leading to wild speculation about her whereabouts and condition.

On Sunday, Kensington Palace issued a photo of Kate with her three children. The photo was supposedly taken early last week in Windsor by her husband, William, Prince of Wales. Along with the photo, Kate put out a statement that said, “Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months. Wishing everyone a Happy Mother’s Day.”

However, the AP has removed the photo. So has Reuters and Agence France-Presse.

The Associated Press’ Brian Melley wrote , “The Associated Press initially published the photo, which was issued by Kensington Palace. But AP later retracted the image because at closer inspection, it appeared the source had manipulated the image in a way that did not meet AP’s photo standards. The photo shows an inconsistency in the alignment of Princess Charlotte’s left hand.”

Here’s a video breakdown from Sky News.

What makes it even more suspicious is that Kensington Palace has declined to comment on the news agencies pulling the photo for claims it was manipulated.

The palace released a statement last month that Kate was “doing well.” The statement said, “Kensington Palace made it clear in January the timelines of the princess’ recovery and we’d only be providing significant updates. That guidance stands.”

15 Fantastic and Easy Day Trips From Moscow

Is the hustle and bustle of Moscow starting to wear you down? No worries. There are multiple great day trips from Moscow that will let you see a different side of Russia that you won’t find in the metropolitan area. Each day trip I’ve listed below can easily be done by train from Moscow, and there are trains every day of the week.

The area surrounding Moscow is rich in cultural attractions and natural beauty. By traveling only a short distance, one feels far away from the crowds, and lines of the sprawling Russian capital. Since Russia is undoubtedly an expansive country it may take from half an hour to two hours to reach some of the landmarks on this list (by train or car) from the Moscow city center.

You can escape to the picturesque Russian countryside, visit war memorials, battlefields, admire onion-domed churches, and get insight into the local way of life. Easy day trips from Moscow include the incomparable white-stone Trinity Cathedral in Sergiyev Posad, the spectacular Cathedral of the Assumption in Dmitrov, and the Russian military aircraft in Monino. For those who love rural tranquility, Suzdal and Vladimir are a must-see. History buffs will appreciate the Patriotic War of 1812 reenactment that took place in Borodino on the first weekend of September.

Without further ado, here are 15 best day trips from Moscow that are well worth your attention.

The Best Day Trips from Moscow

There’s a reason Moscow is one of Europe’s most enigmatic destinations. It’s got culture, class, food, history, and more, but even better, is that it is the country’s main transport hub with so many attractions within a day trip from Moscow. While you can definitely spend days or even weeks in Moscow, it can, of course, be done in just one week. What can you do in Moscow in seven days ? Well, you can do a lot if you know how to plan a trip to a place you know so little about.

If you’re ready to get out of the city a bit and soak up the culture, fresh air, and enchanting architecture, I’ve rounded up my favorite day trips outside of Moscow. I often get asked: What are the best cities to visit in Russia? And these are places that I’ve been and loved.

My Favorite Easy Day Trips from Moscow:

Dmitrov Kolomna Zvenigorod Sergiyev Posad Yaroslavl Arkhangelskoye Estate Vladimir Suzdal Korolev Borodino Patriot Park in Kubinka Melikhovo Gorki Leninskie Kaluga Monino

1. Day Trip to Dmitrov from Moscow

Dmitrov may not be as popular as other cities in Russia, but the fact that the city was founded only 7 years earlier than Moscow makes for a great day trip. This small city some 90 kilometers from Moscow is particularly beautiful in the summer. As you walk the streets you can see sparkling fountains, charming centuries-old buildings, yachts and boats transiting through the canal and, of course, the Museum-Reserve Dmitrov Kremlin.

The Kremlin (castle) is the city’s main draw. The 10m high and about 1km long earthen rampart remained behind the wooden wall and gives an idea of how the castle looked like 400 years ago. The oldest surviving building on the Kremlin grounds is the 16th-century Assumption Cathedral with a unique five-tier iconostasis.

places to visit near moscow by train

Not far from the Kremlin there is a compact 15th-century Borisoglebsky convent. Its main building – the 16th-century Cathedral of Sts. Boris and Gleb is open to the visitors only for services of worship. In the 1930s in the convent housed a labor camp, which contained the builders of the Canal named after Moscow.

Getting There: Dmitrov sits an easy hour and sixteen minutes by train from Savyelovskiy Rail Terminal. This cheap day trip from Moscow is a great chance to soak up the historic charm to be found in Moscow Oblast.

2. Day Trip to Kolomna from Moscow

Situated to the south-east of Moscow, Kolomna is a beautiful port city on the Oka River. This is one of the oldest Russian cities in the region. So you can discover the old history in museums and monasteries. Interestingly, the city was a site for important weapon factories under the Soviet Union. Although it was opened up in 1994 Kolomna is not as popular as other day-trip destinations in the region.

Nevertheless, it is a great place to visit with friends and family where you can explore the 15th-century Kremlin made of red brick, try incredibly sweet traditional pastila (marshmallow), and visit some of the cute little churches and 19th-century mansions.

Getting There: Take the express train (commuter line train) from the Kazansky rail terminal to Golutvin station. The trip lasts one hour and forty minutes.

3. Day Trip to Zvenigorod from Moscow

This one is usually a given due to its proximity to and ease of transport from Moscow. It’s one of the easiest day trips from Moscow by train. You can easily hop on the train from the city and land right in the town of Zvenigorod where you can visit the 14th-century Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and sample the sparkly and refreshing kvass, a Russian specialty beverage that’s enjoyed in the summer months.

Zvenigorod is an adorable little town just under an hour away from the Moscow city and is an amazing place to visit as it will give a relaxing break from the hectic life of Moscow. Check this day trip if you don’t feel like planning.

If you have a sweet tooth, spend some time in the quirky Museum of Russian Desserts, where you can indulge in uniquely delicious treats and explore the intersection of food and culture.

Then you may want to pay the Zvenigorod Museum of History, Architecture, and Art a visit. The museum’s exposition is located on the territory of the Savvino-Storozhevsky monastery, or rather, in the 17th-century Tsaritsyny chambers, built for the wife of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. Stroll through the museum halls to view the permanent exhibitions, which offer insights into various aspects of Russian history. The intricate museum’s building is adorned with a decorative porch, complex patterned elements, and looks very impressive in general.

4. Day Trip to Sergiyev Posad from Moscow

If you’re looking for cheap day trips from Moscow, Sergiyev Posad is a good choice at just a few dollar train ride away. Known as a major center of pilgrimage and home to one of the largest Russian Orthodox Monastery which has been here for hundreds of years, Sergiyev Posad is a fun day trip from Moscow and can be combined with Abramtsevo Museum Estate. As the only town in Moscow Region which is included in the Golden Ring of Russian cities, Sergiyev Posad is an incredible destination for a day trip from Moscow that packs UNESCO-protected Trinity Sergius Lavra, great museums, and gorgeous architecture into one day.

Make sure you see the six-pillared Assumption Cathedral that was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in mid-16th-century and go inside to marvel at the impressive iconostasis that features Simon Ushakov’s masterpiece, the icon of Last Supper. Enjoy a delicious lamb steak with wheat kasha, Ukha fish soup, or hand-made dumplings as you learn a lot about religious and cultural history.

Getting There: Known for its small-town charm and welcoming feel, you can get to Sergiyev Posad by train, by bus, or by car. Trains depart from Yaroslavsky Rail Terminal every thirty minutes, and the trip lasts about an hour and a half. Alternatively, you can hop on a bus at the ‘VDNKh’ metro station. A bus trip to Sergiyev Posad takes two hours on average but can be reached in 90 minutes depending on traffic. If you go by car expect to spend about an hour and a half attempting to traverse the congested Yaroslavskoye highway.

5. Day Trip to Yaroslavl from Moscow

Going from Moscow to Yaroslavl may seem like a really long day trip, but honestly, if you take the comfortable train, it only takes about four hours to reach the city, so making a Yaroslavl day trip is totally doable. Although I do recommend much more than one day in Yaroslavl, especially if it’s your first time.

Cultural tourists visiting Yaroslavl should start their exploration by strolling the historic city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A spacious 100-hectare area enclosed by Sobinova and Republican streets is home to most popular attractions – the 17th-century Church of Elijah the Prophet that survived almost exactly in its original form, and in contrast to it, the white stone Assumption Cathedral, restored in the 2000s.

golden ring russia

If you walk a bit further passing the Holy Trinity sculpture and city’s foundation stone, you will find yourself at Strelka, a park on the cape, which offers panoramic views of the spot at the confluence of Volga and Kotorosl rivers. On the way back, there is a pleasant walk along the picturesque Volga embankment to the Governor’s Garden with shadowy alleys and an open-air Sculpture museum.

Getting There: Yaroslavl is about 280 km (173 miles) northeast of Moscow, so the best way to get there is to take a morning train from Yaroslavskiy Rail Terminal. A tour is also a great way to see the Yaroslavl without having to worry about driving or searching for trains. You can book a tour here.

6. Day Trip to Arkhangelskoye Estate from Moscow

Situated on the outskirts of Moscow and dates back to the late 18th-century, Arkhangelskoye Estate was the domain of the nobility for over a century until the Russian Revolution swept people who owned the estate out of the country. The estate was turned into a museum, which it remains today.

cities close to moscow worth visiting

The Arkhangelskoye Estate Museum holds the largest rare-book collection. The exhibition also includes old manuscripts, historical documents, photos from the past, a vast collection of sculpture, paintings, engravings, and exceptional examples of decorative art. These art objects once belonged to Prince Nikolai Yusupov, the former owner of the estate.

train trips from moscow

Arkhangelskoye Estate is often referred to as the Russian version of Versailles because of the intricately manicured garden and beautiful 18th-century park. Famous Russian writers and poets such as Pushkin, Herzen, Mayakovsky loved to spend their free time here making long excursions in the surrounding area. Arkhangelskoye is a perfect place to appreciate the terraces decorated by delightful statues, exquisite vases, and busts.

Visitors can take tours, which introduce them to vibrant examples of Russian art and culture.

Getting There: To reach the estate it’s best to take a bus or a privately-owned minibus that departs from Tushinskaya metro station.

7. Day Trip to Vladimir from Moscow

Situated only two hours east of Moscow, Vladimir is absolutely one of the best places to visit near Moscow for a day trip. This splendid city dates back to the 12th century and has a very rich history. If magnificent Orthodox cathedrals and traditional white-stone architecture entice you, then this place is perfect for a day trip with your significant other.

First things first, you need to see the Golden Gate, which indicates the entrance into the old town. This 12th-century medieval masterpiece of military architecture is associated not only with Vladimir but with the Golden Ring tourist route itself. At the top of the gate, where once was the Church of the Deposition of the Robe, there is the Museum of Weapons. Great looking arrowheads and spear points date back to the Grand Principality of Vladimir, while the exhibition in an impressively majestic setting features a number of Batu-Khan related artifacts.

There’s a variety of attractions to put on your must-see list: the Old Believers Trinity Church right behind it, the Cathedral of St Demetrius, and Dormition (Uspensky) Cathedral. If you plan on shopping for souvenirs like birch-bark masterpieces of Kunov’s masters, drawings, carving, embossing, figures of people and animals, stop by the Lacquer Miniature, the Museum of Crystal, and the Gingerbread Museum. Many of the local attractions were added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites.

Getting There: The best way to visit this area is to catch an early train from Moscow and book a full-day tour of Vladimir in advance. This one includes the town of Suzdal as well.

8. Day Trip to Suzdal from Moscow

This gem of a little medieval town perched on a hill just a 30-minute ride from Vladimir is one of those places I’ve visited and could move there permanently and be happy! It’s a charming little piece of history that also has a Kremlin and visiting it feels like stepping back in time. if you’re a culture enthusiast you’ll be glad to know there are numerous churches, five monasteries, including Spaso-Yevfimiev Monastery in Suzdal. Check them out if you want to get a real taste of the country!

cheap day trips from moscow

pend some time shopping at the Torgovaya ploshchad (Market Square), where you can buy baskets made of birch bark, ceramic handmade plates, honey or souvenirs and, of course, grab some afternoon tea!

Getting There: Trains leave regularly from Moscow’s Kurskiy Rail Terminal to Vladimir where you can hop on a bus to Suzdal. You can also take a bus from Moscow. In this case, it might take longer and you’ll probably encounter infamous traffic jams. If you go by express train the trip takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes. There are slower trains of course, but I’d recommend going with the fast one and save a lot of time!

9. Day Trip to Korolev from Moscow

Located some 30 kilometers northeast of Moscow, Korolev has become arguably the most important space research center with skilled workers from across the Soviet Union who came here to expand the space program.

It became a leading institute dedicated to aerospace research in the country. Today, that tendency can still be clearly seen on the streets and in the buildings. When the Soviet Union collapsed, the city retained its status as the headquarters of Russia’s space surveillance network and now it hosts the Russian Mission Control Center, an analogue of the American Mission Control Center at NASA’s Space Center in Houston.

If you want to learn more about Mission Control Center and the former Russian Mir space station, book a tour with a knowledgeable guide who can clearly tell the history of this place.

If you’re not into space exploration there is also a Memorial Apartment Museum of Marina Tsvetaeva in Bolshevo. With a picturesque park next to the museum, it’s a great place for walking in the fresh air. The highlight of the park is memorial stones with quotes from Tsvetaeva’s poems.

Getting There: I’d recommend going by train. Catch one at Yaroslavskiy Rail Terminal that departs every 30 minutes to reach Bolshevo station.

10. Day Trip to Borodino from Moscow

The historic Battle of Borodino on September 7, 1812, took place just outside the small village of Borodino, about 140 km west of Moscow, and about 15 km from the nearest town of Mozhaysk. Although the French won the Battle of Borodino and went to capture Moscow, it was one of the bloodiest battles of the pre-twentieth-century that is also predetermined Napoleon’s defeat.

While it was a battlefield back then, not much remains today. It’s mostly a green and grassy field now with a few monuments of military honor, architectural objects dated back to 19th and 20th century, and fortification facilities scattered throughout the area. The largest of these is the 27-meter high obelisk located right at the heart of the former battlefield.

Every year the military and patriotic festival and theatrical performance take place in Borodino. Early September is considered to be the best for visiting. But if you just want to feel the spirit of the battle, it’s better to go at any other time of the year.

Getting there: Hop on a train from the Belorussky rail terminal, disembark in Mozhaysk, and then take a bus to the museum. The whole travel time is about 2 hours.

11. Day Trip to Patriot Park in Kubinka from Moscow

Once a Red Army tank training ground, now it’s a military Disneyland with history, structure, guns, and armored vehicles! The tank museum originally housed one of the world’s largest and rarest collections of tanks. In 2016 they combined the training grounds with the newly-created Patriot Park. Since then, some of the notable and rare items have been moved to the Patriot Park site, so you may want to combine both sites into one tour (only about 20 minutes apart).

best places to travel from moscow

The exhibition grounds include some very rare specimens that are must-see for any military enthusiasts out there. The staff is friendly, helpful and kind, while the museum has a small shop. As this site is part of an operating military base, they may ask you to show your passport, or provide them with a photocopy of the front pages. There are vending machines for snacks and drinks, and there are bathroom facilities. There’s plenty to see, so I recommend setting aside an entire day!

Getting there: Situated halfway between Borodino and Moscow, the best way to reach Patriot Park in Kubinka is by car. Alternatively, if you don’t want to rent one, consider car-sharing apps like Gett or UBER. The price of ride-sharing services is cheap enough to make them a viable proposition for choosing them.

12. Day Trip to Melikhovo from Moscow

Located some 80 km from Moscow, Melikhovo is one of the most important museums dedicated to Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. This renowned Russian writer and playwright acquired Melikhovo in 1892. He lived there with his parents and close relatives for 7 years before moving to the Crimea in 1899. Melikhovo is where he wrote his plays “The Man in the Case” and “The Seagull”.

The estate faded into oblivion right after the Revolution but in 1939 Anton Chekhov’s sister Maria and his nephew established a museum based on Chekhov’s place of living. The museum opened its doors to the public in 1941.

Today museum’s exhibition reveals the legacy of a celebrated writer and shows his path not only as a writer but as a doctor and public figure as well. The collection also features some of the best-known paintings by famous artists like Isaac Levitan and Vasily Polenov, who were Chekhov’s friends. When it comes to fun and educational day trips from Moscow, Melikhovo is a nice place for learning more about Chekov’s life and work.

Getting There: You can reach Melikhovo by train from Kurskiy rail Terminal. Disembark in the town of Chekhov and hop on a minibus that will get to the estate. Alternatively, hop on a bus that departs from the Yuzhnaya metro station.

13. Day Trip to Gorki Leninskie from Moscow

Once the realm of Russian nobles, Gorki Leninskie was turned into Lenin’s museum some 25 years after his death. The estate sits some 30-minute bus ride from the Domodedovskaya metro station and houses Soviet-era memorabilia and Lenin’s memorial flat recently transferred from the Kremlin, as well as his vintage Rolls-Royce.

Most people only associate this place with the name of the first communist leader. In fact, the name of the estate was first mentioned in documents dating back to the 16th-century. Throughout its history, the estate was owned by a number of prominent figures. It’s in fact one of the best museums that holds the country’s finest collection 19th-century furnishings and a unique collection of domestic items owned by nobles. Plus, ancient Vyatichi native tribe or East Slavs who inhabited a part of the Oka basin’s burial mounds and a few notable sculptures are hidden behind the avenues of lime trees in the park.

Getting There: You could, of course, hop on a bus from Domodedovskaya metro station. But it would be much easier just to use UBER or Gett. The estate isn’t that far from the Moscow Circle Road but going there by bus may involve some navigating.

14. Day Trip to Kaluga from Moscow

If you’re looking for an educational day trip from Moscow, look no farther than Kaluga! This beautiful city could really entertain you for more than just a day, but to get a taste of science, be sure to visit the Tsiolkovsky State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics. Or in other words, the Space Museum.

Visitors to the museum will learn more about the history of space exploration. In fact, this is one of the largest Space Museums in Russia, which opened its doors in Kaluga in 1967. Here you can see a prototype of the iconic MIR space station and a duplicate of the Voskhod rocket. The very same rocket that took the first man to space. There’s also a planetarium, which from the outside resembles a spaceship.

Kaluga is a totally walkable city. Make sure to spend some time strolling Teatralnaya street with the authentic 19th-century pavement that now marks the Kilometer Zero. Then walk across the 18th-century Kamenniy Most (the Stone Bridge) that somewhat resembles a Roman aqueduct. If you’re an architecture buff marvel at the Church of St. Cosmas and Damian.

It is assumed that the church was erected by one of the followers of Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli in 1794. The church resembles the Smolny Convent in St. Petersburg. With five church towers directed upward and six tiers of oblong windows give the exterior a sense of lightness and airiness.

Getting There: Trains from Kiyevsky Rail Terminal to Kaluga leave every 90 minutes. The trip takes about 2 hours and 35 minutes.

15. Day Trip to Monino from Moscow

Are you looking for great family & kid-friendly day trips from Moscow? If so, consider visiting the Central Museum of the Air Forces at Monino. This unique military open-air museum is home to over 180 Russian aircraft and 100 aircraft engines and the perfect place to go when your crowd is looking for a break from hectic city life. Check this tour if you don’t feel like planning.

things to do outside of moscow

This site was formerly an operational airbase from 1932 till 1956 and many of the Russian aviation Design bureaus have made a contribution to the operation and maintenance of the museum. Along with aircraft from the Second World War, there are the TU-95 Bear four-engine turboprop-powered strategic bomber and the TU-144 Charger a Soviet supersonic passenger airliner (which resembled the Concorde). The museum also has exhibits related to military aviation history such as the uniform of captured U2 pilot Gary Powers.

Getting There: This museum is located at Monino Town, about 30 km from Moscow. It is open on all days from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except Mondays and Tuesdays. To get there take a train departing from Yaroslavskiy Rail Terminal and disembark at Monino station. Alternatively, hop on a bus from Schelkovskaya or Partizanskaya metro station.

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

The Stone Flower Fountain was also built in 1954 and is worth checking out. The centerpiece of this large fountain is a flower carved from stones from the Ural Mountains! Along the side of the fountain are various bronze sculptures.

You will find many people zipping around on rollerblades and bicycles across the large area that the venue covers. It’s also home to amusement rides and carousels, making it the perfect place to stop with kids on your Moscow itinerary! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and allow a few hours to explore all the areas that interest you!

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Bolshoi Theater

  • Why it’s awesome: The Bolshoi Theater is a historic venue that hosts world-class ballet and opera performances!
  • Cost: Prices vary largely between USD $2.00 –  USD $228.00 based on seat location.
  • Food nearby: Head to the Russian restaurant, Bolshoi for high-quality food and drinks and excellent service!

The Bolshoi Theater is among the oldest and most renowned ballet and opera companies in the world! It also boasts the world’s biggest ballet company, with more than 200 dancers!

The theater has been rebuilt and renovated several times during its long history. In 2011 it finished its most recent renovation after an extensive six-year restoration that started in 2005. The renovation included an improvement in acoustics and the restoration of the original Imperial decor.

The Bolshoi Theater has put on many of the world’s most famous ballet acts! Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake premiered at the theater in 1877 and other notable performances of the Bolshoi repertoire include Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker!

Bolshoi Theater

Today, when you visit the theater, you can expect a magical performance from skilled singers, dancers, and musicians with the highest level of technique!

If you don’t have time to see a show, the theater also provides guided tours on select days of the week. Tours are given in both Russian and English and will provide visitors with a more intimate look at the different areas of the theater!

The stage of this iconic Russian theater has seen many outstanding performances. If you’re a fan of the performing arts, the Bolshoi Theater is one of the greatest and oldest ballet and opera companies in the world, making it a must-see attraction on your Moscow itinerary!

Godzillas Hostel

Godzillas Hostel is located in the center of Moscow, just a short walk from all the major tourist attractions and the metro station.

  • Towels Included

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Germany's Scholz heads to Israel and Jordan on two-day Mideast trip

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz heads to Israel and Jordan on Saturday on a two-day trip to the Middle East.

Scholz will first visit Jordan and then travel on to Israel, government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said in Berlin on Friday.

This is the chancellor's second trip to the region since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th last year.

Hebestreit said Scholz's itinerary is still being finalized.

A meeting between Scholz and Jordan's King Abdullah II is planned first.

Scholz will travel to Israel on Sunday where a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is planned.

The chancellor will also meet Israel's President Isaac Herzog.

A meeting with representatives of the Palestinian Authority has not yet been planned.

Topics of discussion include the current developments in the Gaza Strip, the airlift for the suffering population and the general situation in the crisis area, government spokesman Hebestreit said.
