Glen Canyon Dam Tours

Glen Canyon Damn located just outside of Page is one of the largest and most important dams in the United States. The 710-foot (220 m) high dam was built by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) from 1956 to 1966 and forms Lake Powell, one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the U.S. with a capacity of 27 million acre-feet (33 km3). The dam is named for Glen Canyon, a series of deep sandstone gorges now flooded by the reservoir. The dam helps ensure an equitable distribution of water between the states of the Upper Colorado River Basin (Colorado, Wyoming, and most of New Mexico and Utah) and the Lower Basin (California, Nevada, and most of Arizona).

During years of drought, Glen Canyon guarantees water delivery to the Lower Basin states, without the need for rationing in the Upper Basin. Glen Canyon Dam has been a focus of environmental controversy for nearly 100 years. Between the environmental impacts of flooding Glen Canyon (now Lake Powell), the environmental changes to the Grand Canyon, and the increased demand for this water in growing cities and states, Glen Canyon Dam and its overall benefit continues to be under scrutiny. This dam has a long and complicated history with unforeseen effects and demands. Experience Horseshoe Bend Like Never Before

Check in at our River Headquarters in Page. Enjoy a one-hour drive through the Colorado Plateau. Upon arrival walk to your river raft to meet your friendly guide who will help you aboard our roomy 37-foot raft. Then sit back and relax as you take in the sights and stories of the Colorado River in Glen Canyon including the rich natural and human history of the region. Can you say panoramic? Of course you can, and of course you live for that sort of thing — that’s why you’re visiting the lovely  Lake Powell . But can you say “panoramic” in five languages? While on one of the many Lake Powell boat tours offered from Wahweap Marina in Page, Arizona, (near  Horseshoe Bend  on the Colorado River and  Antelope Canyon ) you’ll have the option to hear an audio tour, with the included audio set, in one of five languages: English, German, French, Italian, and Japanese. So you might learn a thing or two (It’s “panoramica” in Italian, by the way).

Why hire a tour? Take in the high contrast of Lake Powell's placid, cool blue waters and colorful warm shores without worrying about maps or logistics. It's for boat lovers, lake lovers, sightseers and tourists from all over the world; it's for people who want to get on the water but don’t want to take all day for a boat tour and folks who don’t want to deal with the logistics or cost of renting their own boat. You’ll board a vessel with folks from all over the world to see the sites that the lake has to offer. The Panoramic Lake Powell Tour offered by ARAMARK at the Wahweap Marina is an excellent option, and heads across the state line to visit some of Utah’s majestic buttes only seen from the water.

A Grand and Relaxing Evening Tour

The Panoramic Lake Powell Tour takes you by a double-decker boat out to Gunsight Bay and back. This is an excellent option for those who don’t want to deal with the logistics of renting their own boat (or they can’t, for whatever reason) and would prefer to sit back and relax, and take in some views.

As you head out of the marina, you approach Castle Rock (get your cameras ready) and pass east through the Castle Rock Cut, which grants you quicker access to Utah and beyond. The audio set provides historical information about the Native Americans who once called this area home, about the first explorers of the Colorado River — like John Wesley Powell (the lake’s namesake) — and the eventual damming of the river that created this massive body of water and reservoir for the West. Enjoy some refreshments and a nice cool breeze as you coast across the water. While this tour doesn’t stop to let you out of the boat (some of the longer Lake Powell boat tours do), you will venture far and be able get close to the awe-inspiring natural wonders of canyon country. Note the “bathtub ring” which marks the lake’s high point at one time, and take panoramic photos once you reach Gunsight Bay. The boat then turns around, and you can take it all in again. This tour departs at 5 p.m. and returns at 7 p.m.; the two-hour duration is an ideal amount of time to get a softer sun and long, beautiful shadows from the area’s rock formations for your excellent pictures. It's also a good fit for road trips through the region with a  base camp to adventure  in Kanab, Utah.

Rainbow Bridge Tour

Let us take you on a truly one-of-a-kind excursion. Enjoy cruising 50 miles of unique Lake Powell shoreline to Rainbow Bridge National Monument, one of the largest known natural bridges in the world.  The bridge extends 290' into the sky and 275' across Bridge Canyon. Witness firsthand the power of wind and water in their role that sculpted this remarkable landscape.

Navajo, Southern Paiute, San Juan, Ute, Kaibab Paiute, White Mesa Ute, and Hopi peoples traditionally used the land comprising Rainbow Bridge National Monument. Prior to these tribes, Ancestral Puebloans and earlier indigenous people lived in and used the Rainbow Bridge  area.

Tour Highlights:

• Padre Bay - Experience picturesque Padre Bay, the largest bay on Lake Powell.
• Rainbow Bridge National Monument - Walk to and explore Rainbow Bridge National Monument, one of the world's largest known natural bridges.

Due to current projected lake levels, for optimum viewing a walk/hike is required both to and from Rainbow Bridge National Monument, which is a total walking distance of 2 miles.

Boxed lunch, snacks, water, coffee, and lemonade are included.  Sandwich Offerings: Roast Beef, Turkey & Veggie Wrap based on availability on board

Due to the meal prep deadline, reservations made less than 24 hours before departure must bring their own lunches.

• All boat tours depart from Lake Powell Resort near Page, AZ.
• Domesticated Animals are not allowed in Rainbow Bridge National Monument in accordance with 36 CFR 1.5(a) this site is culturally sensitive. Therefore service animals are not permitted on the dock or trail at Rainbow Bridge National Monument.

Be sure to arrive in the lobby of Lake Powell Resorts 30 minutes prior to departure. Boarding begins 15 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.

Tour Rates:

NOTE: There is a $30 Glen Canyon park fee that admits one single, private, non-commercial vehicle and all its passengers and is valid for 7 consecutive days. The funds collected from entrance fees stay within the park and are used to enhance the experience of visiting the lake. To learn more about the park fee visit the National Park Service website .

Rainbow Bridge Tour Schedule

NOTE: This tour lasts approximately 7 hours. Due to fluctuating water levels, this tour may take longer than planned. The winter tours will run if there is a minimum of 20 passengers booked on the trip 48 hours prior to departure. Please call 928.645.2433 within 48 hours prior to your scheduled departure to check on the trip status.

Tour seats must be cancelled 24 hours prior to tour departure in order to receive a full refund. Cancelling within 24 hours of tour departure will forfeit the value of the tickets. All cruises are subject to cancellation or consolidation by management at 24 hours prior. To confirm your departure please call 24 hours in advance of your booking.
