ABBA Voyage 2022 tour: Dates, tickets and presale information

ABBA have reunited and announced they will be hosting a “revolutionary” concert residency from May 2022.

To accompany their newly revealed album, Voyage , which will be released 5 November , the band will embark on a four-year residency from May 2022 – but with a twist.

Instead of original members Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha and Anni-Frid embarking on a world tour, they will instead send digital avatars of themselves to perform to millions of fans around the globe.

The first lot of tickets will go on sale at 10am this morning (5 September) to those who pre-ordered the new album before midday on Saturday (4 September).

The remaining presale tickets will go on sale here at 10am on Monday (6 September) – in order to gain access, you must register here before midday today.

General sale for tickets will begin on Tuesday (7 September) at 10am.

Created with George Lucas’ studio Industrial Light & Magic, which is used for the digital effects in Star Wars , animated versions of the band will be going around the world from 2022 to 2026.

The group began working on the digital concert before getting back in the studio together to create new material.

The residency will take place at the purpose built ABBA Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London and has capacity for 3000 fans.

Mamma Mia! ABBA Is Back After Nearly 40 Years

Mandalit del Barco (square - 2015)

Mandalit del Barco

abba concert tour dates 2022

ABBA members Björn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson. Baillie Walsh/Universal Music Group hide caption

ABBA members Björn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson.

Nearly 40 years since they last made music together, the members of ABBA are back. The Swedish pop group has announced an upcoming "hologram" concert in London and its first studio album in four decades.

"We took a break in the spring of 1982, and now we've decided it's time to end it," the band announced in a news release. "They say it's foolhardy to wait more than 40 years between albums, so we've recorded a follow-up to The Visitors ."

ABBA is the acronym from the first name of singers Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad and instrumentalists-songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. They began in 1970 as a cabaret act. Four years later, they won the Eurovision competition with "Waterloo." They became stars with songs like "Dancing Queen" and "Fernando." Another hit, "Mamma Mia," inspired a Broadway musical and a movie (and its sequel) starring Meryl Streep (and Cher).

ABBA's last album, The Visitors , released in 1981, featured a more sophisticated sound than the group's previous light pop music. By then, one of the band's two married couples had divorced, and the other was about to.

The members are now all in their 70s and have released numerous solo projects. For several years now, ABBA has been teasing about a reunion.

Its new album, Voyage , will be released on Nov. 5. It includes singles "I Still Have Faith in You" and "Don't Shut Me Down," recorded at Andersson's Riksmixningsverket studio in Stockholm.

In the announcement, ABBA says its inspiration to record again comes from having created "the strangest and most spectacular concert you could ever dream of." Next May, the group will perform digitally with a live band in a specially built arena at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, employing likenesses created by a team from George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic.

"We're going to be able to sit back in an audience and watch our digital selves perform our songs on a stage in a custom-built arena in London next spring," reads the announcement. Tickets for the event go on sale Sept. 5.

"We're truly sailing in uncharted waters," the statement continues. "With the help of our younger selves, we travel into the future. It's not easy to explain, but then it hasn't been done before."

ABBA Voyage release date, songs, tour and everything you need to know

By Steve O'Brien | October 25, 2021

ABBA Voyage

Yes, ABBA Voyage is actually happening! After four decades apart, Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad have reunited for a new album and virtual tour.

https://twitter.com/ABBAVoyage/status/1435166024857489408

The new ABBA album: When’s it out?

The 10-track  Voyage  will be released on 5 November, 40 years after their last LP,  The Visitors ( read our feature on The Vistors here ). The band also revealed details of a “revolutionary” set of concerts where virtual avatars will perform many of the group’s classic songs.

abba concert tour dates 2022

ABBA Voyage: When is the tour?

The live show, ABBA Voyage, will open on 27 May 2022 at the ABBA Arena, a state-of-the-art 3,000 capacity arena located at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. Tickets for the concerts are available  here .

“It’s been a while since we made music together,” the band said in a statement. “We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we’ve decided it’s time to end it. They say it’s foolhardy to wait more than 40 years between albums, so we’ve recorded a follow-up to  The Visitors .

“To tell the truth, the main inspiration to record again comes from our involvement in creating the strangest and most spectacular concert you could ever dream of. We’re going to be able to sit back in an audience and watch our digital selves perform our songs on a stage in a custom-built arena in London next spring. Weird and wonderful!”

What are ABBAtars?

ABBA won’t be performing as themselves, instead the new and old songs will be sung by what they’re calling ABBAtars, digital, de-aged versions of the four members.

Industrial Light & Magic – the team behind  Star Wars ’ special effects – are responsible for reviving ABBA in their 70s pomp using motion-capture suits.

Commenting on the hours ABBA spent creating the new footage Agnetha said: “None of us really knew what to expect, but we’ve worked with it a lot now, so you grow into it eventually. We stand there, doing these songs, with – I don’t know how many cameras and people. Then somehow it was technologically transferred, in some way that we don’t understand. It felt great to do because it was so different. Also, there was a vibe, one felt that maybe it’s the last thing we do. Same thing with this album.”

Using motion capture technology, Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid spent weeks digitising their performances to create the avatars you will see on stage at #ABBAVoyage next year. Find out more about the concert at https://t.co/erjJHNB72i pic.twitter.com/J3G4WbFlmO — ABBA Voyage (@ABBAVoyage) October 13, 2021

Björn was the driving force behind the live show.

“What attracted me, personally, in the beginning, was that I have a kind of scientific curiosity,” he explained to Apple Music . “I had a vision of, ‘What if I, as in my 1979 self, could speak to any audience and I could watch that sitting in the audience, watching myself do that? And if we create that, what can we do next, and next?’ There‘s vision upon vision of strange and weird and wonderful things you can do. And knowing that we’re the first to do it is also a factor why we were so attracted to the idea.

“This is a new frontier in live entertainment, I think, with these avatars together and the audience not knowing what is what, in the end, and being uncertain where the screen starts and where it ends. It’s going to be a wonderful concert experience, but something people have never seen before.”

abba concert tour dates 2022

What songs are on Voyage?

The band have only shared three tracks so far, Don’t Shut Me Down,   I Still Have Faith In You and Just A Notion , a song originally recorded for their sixth album,  Voulez-Vous , but left off the finished record.

“When Benny played the melody, I just knew it had to be about us,” said Ulvaeus, explaining origins of I Still Have Faith In You . “It’s about realising that it’s inconceivable to be where we are. No imagination could dream up that, to release an album after 40 years and still be the best of friends, and still be enjoying each other’s company, and have a total loyalty. Who has experienced that? Nobody.”

Recalling stepping back into the studio, Agnetha Fältskog says: “It’s very much the ABBA sound. It becomes very ABBA when Frida and I get together. It’s almost like a marriage between our voices, and almost hard to tell them apart at times.”

Björn agrees: “Everything came rushing back, like it was yesterday. I looked into Agnetha’s and Frida’s eyes and there was the same kind of feeling, the warmth, the friendship and the bonds.”

The full tracklisting for ABBA’s ninth album is:

  • I Still Have Faith In You
  • When You Danced With Me
  • Little Things
  • Dont Shut Me Down
  • Just A Notion
  • I Can Be That Woman
  • Keep An Eye On Dan
  • No Doubt About It
  • Ode To Freedom

ABBA Reunite for First Time in 40 Years, Announce New Album and Digital Concert

By Angie Martoccio

Angie Martoccio

After years of delay and teasing on social media, ABBA have officially reunited, announcing the new album Voyage out November 6th.

Although the Swedish pop group sang “Me and I” at a private gala in 2016 — their first time performing since 1986 — this marks their first time officially reuniting in 40 years. Ahead of the release, they dropped the reflective ballad “I Still Have Faith In You” and the disco gem “Don’t Shut Me Down.”

In addition, ABBA will also perform a digital concert on May 27th, 2022 — which they first announced in 2016. Made through George Lucas’ Industry Light & Magic, Abba Voyage will take place at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park’s arena in London. General tickets are available on September 7th.

“It’s been a while since we made music together,” the band said in a statement. “Almost 40 years, actually. We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we’ve decided it’s time to end it. They say it’s foolhardy to wait more than 40 years between albums, so we’ve recorded a follow-up to The Visitors . We simply call it Voyage and we’re truly sailing in uncharted waters.”

“It’s hard to say what’s been the most joyful thing for me with this project,” Andersson said. “If it’s the involvement in creating the concert together with everyone or being back in the studio together again after 40 years. I think hearing Frida and Agnetha singing again is hard to beat.” Added Anni-Frid Lyngstad: “Those first sessions back in 2018 were such fun, and when Benny called and asked if I’d consider singing some more I jumped at it!”

ABBA revealed the first look at their 2022 Voyage concert series. The 20-second trailer shows the digital avatars of the Swedish pop quartet of Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, and Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid (Frida) Lyngstad, dancing to their 1978 song “Summer Night City,” donned in futuristic garb in a digitized setting with neon pyramids and other vivid imagery. The trailer comes days before ABBA releases their new album, and first in 40 years, Voyage (Universal Music Group), on Nov. 5.

The group first revealed their reunion in September along with a new website, upcoming concerts beginning spring 2022, and new singles “I Still Have Faith in You,” “Don’t Shut Me Down” and a recent third “ Just a Notion ,” a song the group originally recorded in 1978 for their sixth album  Voulez-Vous  in 1979 that never made the cut.

“We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we’ve decided it’s time to end it,” said ABBA said in a statement in September.

Along with the release of Voyage, ABBA’s concert series kicks off in London on May 27, 2022, and features the foursome in their avatar forms, or “ABBAtars” (circa 1979), along with a 10-piece live band, at the custom-built “ABBA Arena” at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Producer Ludvig Andersson (Benny’s son) recently explained how the avatars “came to life.”

“Agnetha, Frida, Benny, and Björn got on a stage in front of 160 cameras and almost as many VFX geniuses and they performed every song in this show to perfection over five weeks, capturing every mannerism, every emotion,” said Andersson. “When you see this show it is not a ‘version of’, or a ‘copy of’, it is actually them.”

8:00pm - 10:00pm, with intermission

ABBA MANIA formed in 1999 and the show has been selling out theaters and concert halls internationally ever since.

This show has toured the world in its quest to bring the music of the Swedish ‘Supergroup’ to their millions of fans, old and new!

Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny and Anni-Frid, collectively known as ABBA, dominated the charts for nearly ten years and enjoyed nine UK number 1 hits. At their height they became Sweden’s highest export earners, amazingly, outselling Volvo cars. Sadly, in the early eighties, they decided to go their separate ways, but their music lives on. "ABBA Gold" was continuously in the Album Charts throughout the nineties and is one of the biggest selling albums ever.

ABBA’s timeless songs were written to be enjoyed live and ABBA MANIA gives you exactly that. Two hours of uplifting, dance inducing and sometimes heart-breaking songs fully live with fantastic staging, lighting and effects. The show recreates ABBA’s sound not only perfectly, but respectfully too. ABBA MANIA is not only for life long, die hard ABBA fans but the new generation of fans, who never had the opportunity to see ‘ABBA’ live. Hits include "DancingQueen", "Waterloo", "Mamma Mia", "The Winner Takes it All", "Super Trouper", "Fernando", "Take A Chance On Me" and many more that continue to fill dance floors worldwide.

Abba’s Waterloo album to be reissued for 50th anniversary special

Abba’s hit album Waterloo will be reissued alongside a limited edition box set in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

The LP’s title track is the song that won the Swedish pop group the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974, held at The Dome in Brighton.

A reissued version of the album will be released on April 5 and will comprise a half-speed mastered 45rpm 2LP vinyl along with a limited edition box set of the three vinyl singles originally released in 1974.

The singles will also be available as separate picture discs and there is a unique 10 inch vinyl disc featuring Waterloo in four different languages as well as a new line of anniversary apparel.

To celebrate the album’s anniversary, fans will be able to buy tickets to an event on April 4 which will see them climb the roof of London’s O2 and enjoy the venue’s Abba-themed silent disco.

Waterloo, the band’s second album, was released in March 1974 and the track list includes songs like My Mama Said and Honey, Honey.

This year’s Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Sweden on the 50th anniversary of the band’s 1974 win after singer Loreen won last year’s competition with her single Tattoo.

The band, who have sold more than 400 million albums and singles, were the first competitors from the Nordic country.

Abba member Benny Andersson told BBC Newsnight’s Thursday episode in May 2023 that there is “no way” the group is going to reunite or even walk on stage together during Eurovision.

The songs from Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid “Frida” Lyngstad are also known for featuring in the hit musical Mamma Mia!.

A film version of the musical was released in 2008, starring Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep and others and was followed by a sequel 10 years later.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again saw the A-list actors reprise their roles alongside pop star Cher, who made a cameo.

All four members of Abba reunited in London for the first time since 1982 in 2022 for the opening night of their Voyage live show which features younger “Abba-tars” of the group performing songs from their back catalogue with a live 10-piece band.

The popular quartet parted ways after last performing together in 1982 following a successful 10-year stint.

Humphreys Concerts 2024 season includes Bonnie Raitt, UB40, Brittany Howard, Snarky Puppy, Steve Vai and at least 80 other artists

Humphreys Concerts by the Bay will celebrate its 42nd anniversary this year.

The lineup mixes such rising young acts as Faye Webster, Trey Kennedy and Maoli with such veterans groups and solo artists as The Temptations, Kansas, Clint Black, Chris Isaak and Frankie Valli, Hoodoo Gurus, and more

Change and continuity do not always go hand-in-hand, especially in a business as fickle as the live music industry where success often breeds repetition and duplication.

But change and continuity play equally important roles at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay. Its 42nd season opens April 18 with the venue debut of fast-rising troubadour Faye Webster, 26, and closes Nov. 15 with veteran singer-songwriter Mat Kearny, 45.

The 56 shows in between at the intimate, 1,450-capacity venue on San Diego’s Shelter Island will feature an array of Humphreys mainstays — including Bonnie Raitt, Chris Isaak, The Temptations and The Turtles — along with such newcomers to the venue as Elle King, Maoli, Snarky Puppy, Caloncho and The Movement.

“Our goal is always to bring in artists who have never played for us before, as well as longtime favorites,” said Richard Bartell, the owner of Humphreys. “Music is constantly evolving — and Humphreys is too.”

The venue’s template of change and continuity is underscored by the 13 concerts that will kick off this year’s season.

The first seven shows will feature a total of 10 performers, all making their Humphreys debuts, including headliners Brittany Howard, DannyLux and Trey Kennedy, and opening acts Lindsay James, June McDoom and Upchuck. The next six concerts will feature return performances by Natalie Merchant (who is doing two consecutive nights), Alan Parsons Project Live, Tegan & Sara, Psychedelic Furs and Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey, who previously played at the venue as two-thirds of Peter, Paul & Mary.

Reinvention is imperative

“We have 58 shows booked so far this year and I think we’ll end up with over 70. We’re always looking to reinvent ourselves and bring in a wider demographic,” Bartell said.

He is the chairman of the San Diego Tourism Marketing District and the owner of Bartell Hotels. His company owns and operates eight area hotels. One of them is Humphreys Half Moon Inn and its adjoining marina. The Humphreys concert venue is nestled in between.

A former public defender, Bartell acquired the venue in 1984 when he bought the hotel. While he is an avocational drummer and lifelong music fan, he readily admits to a lack of familiarity with some of the new acts who have performed as part of recent seasons at Humphreys — and some who will be playing there this year.

“I don’t know who some of them are. But if I made decisions based on what I personally know, I would miss the opportunity to make better decisions,” Bartell said. “There are many things I don’t know, so I rely on information I get from other sources. I would never want it to be about me.

“That applies to our concert series and our hotel business. I have a great team of hoteliers. And I trust our concert team implicitly; they are the ones who have made Humphreys so successful. I work with them every day and see what they do. And, as a team, we make decisions.”

Those sentiments are shared by Humphreys Concerts Vice President Bobbi Brieske, who has been with the series since 1986.

“We’re open to whatever makes sense at Humphreys,” Brieske said.

“It makes no difference who these acts are — we research them and if it looks like they’ll do well, we’re all for it. We certainly can’t limit it to the artists that we know. So, we rely a lot on John Wojas, who is more familiar than Richard and I are with some of these acts, because there are a lot of new artists out there all the time.”

Wojas is the senior vice president of talent for AEG/Goldenvoice, the company that produces the annual Coachella and Stagecoach festivals in Indio. He began exclusively booking Humphreys in 2007, following the retirement of Kenny Weissberg, who had guided and grown the series from 1984 to 2006.

Wojas’ tenure has seen him usher in debut performances at Humphreys by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Diana Ross, Blondie and other legends.

Debbie Harry, center, and Blondie

Coachella connection

Wojas has also booked such newcomers to the venue as Orville Peck, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Heather McDonald and Australia’s King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. A number of them played at Humphreys immediately before or after appearing at the Coachella festival, which draws 20 percent of its annual 750,000 attendance from San Diego County.

Younger demographic

By design, these newer bands and solo artists appeal to a much younger demographic than the baby boomers, for whom attending concerts at Humphreys has been a quintessential San Diego experience for going on five decades. Also, by design, the shows by many of these new acts are general admission, standing-room-only events — not the reserved-seating concerts that are still a norm for a majority of concerts at Humphreys.

“We have to do the newer acts if we want to continue to grow. Otherwise, we’d stall out,” Wojas said. “It helps that Humphreys is an all-ages venue. But I’m not going to book acts just to get a younger audience. We look at the style of music and do research to see if they are a good fit for Humphreys.

“The music of Maoli, who is from Hawaii and is doing two sold-out concerts for us this April, has a breezy, chill vibe that is perfect for this venue. Veteran singer-songwriters, like Jewel and Sara McLachlan, have always done well for us, so we’re also bringing in a new generation of singer-songwriters, like Faye Webster, who is selling out across the country and whose audience is mainly 12-year-old girls.

“I’m not right all the time (in making booking decisions), but I think I’m right more often that not.”

Webster’s season-opening April 18 show at Humphreys sold out the first day tickets went on sale. While a good number of the venue’s other 2024 concerts are being announced today, about two dozen of this season’s shows are already on sale — and some of those, such as Maoli’s two April dates and Bonnie Raitt’s two September dates, are already sold out.

The reason?

In a trend that has grown in recent years, bands and solo artists increasingly are announcing their tours on their social media sites half a year or more in advance — and before Humphreys and other venues have announced their annual seasons.

“It’s a good thing,” Wojas said. “Because everything revolves around social media now. And if we skip the announcement of a tour by an artist to wait until we announce our full season, it really hurts us.”

Regardless of when performances are announced, the balance between new and established performers at Humphreys will continue. So, very likely, will the number of tribute acts, which this year includes The Australian Pink Floyd Show and groups saluting the music of Abba, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, the Grateful Dead, Joy Division, New Order and prog-rock pioneers King Crimson.

“We keep bringing these acts back because they seem to be so popular at Humphreys. Our core audience really loves classic-rock and the tribute bands that do that,” Bartell said.

“I’ll probably get in trouble for saying this, but the tribute bands are often better than the original artists to whom they are paying tribute. These acts really nail the music better than the originals and can recruit the very best musicians. They’re not stuck with the original members, who are nowhere near as good.”

Alabama Shakes alum Brittany Howard will make her Humphreys debut this year.
