Is there any classic New York type of design? Perhaps not, as the city itself can’t help but thrum with a diversity of styles layered through boroughs, space, and time. And that’s the beauty of it—a classic uptown residence can feel just as quintessentially New York as a minimalist SoHo pad. Below, we roundup up six of our favorite web exclusive home tours that are set in the Big Apple. So sit back, relax, and get ready to feast your eyes.

One Prospect Park South house with a dining room ping pong table

“Prospect Park South is that unique neighborhood where all of a sudden you have these large whimsical houses, considerable pieces of property, and grassy medians in the middle of the street,” designer Ryan Mahoney , a partner at Workstead , describes the historic neighborhood. “It’s another world.”

Five years ago, Mahoney and his Workstead team were invited to explore it after a repeat client purchased the 6,500-square-foot 1901-built residence. Time had taken its toll on the original clapboard structure, which had at some point been covered over in asphalt shingles, and its rooms revealed more than just gentle wear and tear. Nonetheless, Mahoney was in awe. “You’re greeted by these huge yew trees that frame the symmetrical entrance,” he says. He adds that beyond the picturesque portico he discovered stained glass windows, fireplaces in seemingly every room, and a bright twisting staircase crowned by a laylight. In other words, character—and plenty of it.

A fashionable Park Slope home with plenty of light pink

Sometimes it’s the mood that matters most. A few steps into a first-level Brooklyn apartment in the historic Park Slope neighborhood, and any thoughts of being inside a 19th-century brownstone dissipate. From the soft pink walls to the sculptural sofa reminiscent of a reclining odalisque and the evocative painting by French artist Philippine de Richemont, one is instantly transported to a chic, glamorous reverie. The home is fit for a style-conscious couple moving in together for the first time.

The element of theater is intentional, says Darren Jett , a New York–based interior architect. He was more than happy to oblige the homeowners’ request for a dramatic reimagining of the former rental unit. Having worked on hotels, high-end residences, and retail concept stores in his previous jobs, Jett has a finely tuned intuition for defining a space’s narrative arc. For this project, it was about “seduction, romance, and glamour,” he explains.

A modernist apartment that’s all about Brazilian design

When Bonobos founder Andy Dunn and his wife Manuela Zoninsein purchased their three-bedroom New York City apartment on the historic Great Jones Street, they knew that creating an open floor plan—designed by BKSK Architects—was paramount. After all, they both have big families (hers Brazilian and his American, Indian, and Scandinavian) and love to play host. Plus, after welcoming their first child, Izzo, in October of 2020, moving into a bigger home with fewer walls made sense. The couple gave their trusted friend Becky Shea —a New York interior designer—a call and, suffice to say, she delivered. “I created the layout with the sole purpose of entertaining in mind,” Shea explains. She also outfitted the pair’s previous apartment in Greenwich Village. “What was fun about working with Becky on our last home and again on this one is that she has a good sense of our aesthetic,” Zoninsein says. That aesthetic includes a deep appreciation for Brazilian modernism , which is undoubtedly evident in this second abode.

The Brooklyn town house of designer Fawn Galli

Although interior designer Fawn Galli typically designs for others, she found that the process of creating her family’s Brooklyn town house was an exercise in self-discovery. What is more, for Galli , decorating the house brought her closer to her “ultimate conquest of life,” which is “to live [my] life as closely to who [I am] as possible.” The resulting space is a melange of her varied aesthetic interests.

Inside the home, Galli juxtaposes glamorous and bohemian elements to create an interior that intentionally incorporates clashes. It was informed by her design philosophy, which she explains is based on five core elements: Nature, eclecticism, a no-rules attitude, and a resounding love of both surrealism and disco. More specifically, she drew inspiration from architect Eileen Gray , Salvador Dalí, and “odd assemblages of items that make you question where you are.”

Steve Gold’s sun-drenched SoHo loft

After touring a potential client’s penthouse loft in SoHo to discuss bringing it on the market in late 2019, Steve Gold—celebrity real estate agent and star of Bravo’s *Million Dollar Listing New York—*eventually cut to the chase. “As I left, I ended up saying, ‘I’m happy to sell it for you, but I’ll also buy it from you,’” he recalls.

The would-be client, as it turned out, was New York City gallerist Sean Kelly , who’d lived in the top-floor property for over two decades. “My girlfriend Luiza and I were pregnant with our daughter, Rose, and I was living in a really cool development in Chelsea, but had been thinking about getting a bigger space,” Gold says. “I see a lot of places—all the time—and this had incredible bones and proportions, and I saw the potential.” As penthouse lofts stack up, this particular property clocking in at around 3,400 square feet has three exposures instead of the usual two, including a nearly 50-foot wall with south-facing windows overlooking the quaint cobblestones below.

A sophisticated Upper East Side town house

Mexican architect Carlos Garciavelez and New York designer David Lawrence share a Lhasa Apso named Lolo, a background in luxury fashion, and a knack for creating unexpected and opulent spaces. And although they soft-launched their New York–based design firm Carlos David three years ago, the couple managed to keep most of their projects under wraps—that is until now.

They gut-renovated their client Nancy McCormick’s fifth-floor primary suite down to the studs, moving the bedroom to the south side of the 18-foot-wide home, cloaking the bathroom in blue-quartzite panels inspired by the garden court of the Frick Collection , and devising a show-stopping dressing room—complete with a gleaming silver leaf ceiling. The stairways and corridors of the 8,500-square-foot home were changed from a “margarine yellow” to a glamorously lacquered black-and-pearl white, a nod to Coco Chanel’s original Parisian store. Garciavelez and Lawrence reimagined the dining room as a gilded forest, papering the walls with de Gournay’s handmade chinoiserie blossoms and nesting treelike candelabra atop two 1950s Maison Jansen writing desks cleverly repurposed as dining tables. “They just fit the bill in the most magical way,” Lawrence says. He explains that the desks can be separated for intimate supping or pressed together for grand entertaining—a moveable feast.

New York Home Tours: Remarkably Diverse & Unforgettable Designs!

In this stylish volume, author and photographer Simon Upton opens with humble gratitude and writes,

“New York would never have kept me so faithful for so long were it not for the wonderful people I have met along the way.”

New York Interiors (Vendome, 2021) by Simon Upton - book cover. #newyorkinteriors

Unique New York Homes Celebrate Diversity

It’s doubtful you’ll see interiors spotlighted here reminding you of your own home! Whether located in the city or countryside, all were dreamed into existence from decidedly personal and bold points of view.

Nothing close to ordinary appears on these striking pages. Consider how Miles Redd describes the process of assembling the bath in his New York townhouse:

“My bathroom I discovered in a salvage warehouse. It came from the Lester Armour House, designed by David Adler, in Lake Bluff…It is by far the biggest room and, from time to time, doubles as a dining room.”

Bathroom as flex room? The largest room? A dining room! See what I mean about letting go of your preconceived notion of design laws!?!

John Steinbeck New York quote on Hello Lovely Studio. #newyorkquotes

Don’t look for floorplan inspiration or resources for your own schemes. Rather, you’ll discover interiors that are a testament to freedom from rules.

Artful & Soulful Interior Design Without Rules

Playful scale, odd pairings, traditional-yet-modern gestures. Eclectic collections, quirky architecture, and artful objects become backdrops for daily living. It’s a treat to tour such private abodes that elevate the everyday and are so very cherished.

I am smitten with this New York kitchen!

Classic sophisticated kitchen by Will Kopelman in an Upper East Side Manhattan apartment in NEW YORK INTERIORS. #newyorkkitchens #traditionalkitchens

As you might imagine, the photography is exquisite as Upton captures poignancy in the homes of friends, not strangers. Magic tends to happen when simpatico, hospitality, and a reverence for artful living inform the dynamic.

Engage With These Design Images & Stories From the Heart

Does the sentiment expressed with neon in this modern bedroom (below) move you to melancholia? Or does it evoke a vulnerable longing that is difficult to name with language?

It’s that sort of mix and synthesis which transcends language that I personally find intriguing and mysteriously lovely about interior design.

Neon art in bedroom designed by Timothy Haynes & Kevin Roberts. #newyorkbedroom #modernart #modernbedrooms

You’ll discover plenty of depth and intimacy within NEW YORK INTERIORS. I wonder how this book will inspire you to adjust your lens. Will you see your own nest with fresh eyes as you consider the spaciousness creative freedom affords?

The Energy of New York Inspires Wonder

Perhaps you’ll find yourself awakened by the level of restraint in some of these designs. By the celebration of abundance in others. I wonder if your senses will fill with wonder as mine have. There is just so much beauty in the breadth of how humans express their passions and imagine spaces they call home.

Stephen Sills designed country house interior in NEW YORK INTERIORS by Simon Upton. #interiordesign #newyorkhomes

It rings dramatic, but journeying through NEW YORK INTERIORS feels like self-care for my creative self (um…is creative self-care a thing?). Who can say what fruits will come?

The thing is, designing types connect in deep ways with their shelters. For example, Aerin Lauder discusses the most important element within a space:

“For me, light is the most important element in any space. It brings warmth and life, while the play of shadows, as the light moves around a room, introduces a constantly changing energy.”

Be Surprised by This Stunning Collection of Interior Images

Also, I found myself repeatedly surprised and stirred by the heartfelt reflections shared by these New Yorkers. Owner of one wildly over-the-top Hudson Valley country house filled with art, Simon Lince writes:

“Our most treasured piece of art is actually a letter from our niece, Katie, who lives in England with her family. She sent us the note when she was learning to write, and it is such a sweet, unabashed expression of love–the perfect emblem for our country home.”

Agatha Christie New York quote on Hello Lovely Studio. #newyorkquotes

Similarly, this book is a love letter to New York.

I LOVE posts like this where you highlight such unique interiors (I LOVE the unexpected… the non-cookie cutter home) & throw in an amazing home tour as the cherry on top!!! 🤗I tend toward the more sparse layouts but love looking @ the busy ones also. Somehow looking @ such beautiful creative design does feed my soul. I guess because God is creative and we are made in His image so it’s just such a part of who we are. I digress…ha! Athena Calderone’s home…Oh. My. Goodness. So MUCH to love there…can’t wait to rewatch that tour again!!

' src=

YES! I’m so glad you loved this post and totally feel what I’m feeling: there is a spaciousness and freedom we can tap into, and design is but one aspect of it. When I go to the canvas with paint, I also encounter this freedom. When I give myself to contemplative prayer, I open to it. Yet there are messages of scarcity and fear everywhere. Interior design is one way we can practice artful living. Athena Calderone’s kitchen!!! Oh my Lord, she makes me think I could live with black, and you can just feel how passionate she is about each decision thoughtfully made. Thanks for reading, Amy! xox

' src=

Ok…speaking of going to the canvas!! I bought a 60”x48” canvas pic @ a thrift store for $25 that I’m gonna paint over like you suggested with the shades of white I used in my house…white dove, shoji white, & edgecomb gray & see what happens! I’ve been anticipating this for a long time & today is the day I’m gonna get started! Wish me luck! Haha! You inspired me to do this!!

That is heartwarming, Amy. I hope it is relaxing. Just keep layering, and even if it takes a little while, eventually the build-up of those layers will add interest and texture. Do you have a place in mind to hang it?

' src=

All interesting and out of the ordinary! Not really my cup of tea, but I can certainly see the potential for those who love that aesthetic. I do, however, love, love, love Will Kopelman’s kitchen!

Hahaha – it’s so refreshing to peek inside the homes of a diverse group of creative people! And that kitchen! Yes!

The Home Alone 2 Guide To Navigating NYC

So you don't get lost in New York.

Human,

Should you find yourself wandering aimlessly through New York City this holiday season , check off some of the hotspots below in our Home Alone 2 tour guide . Bonus points if you wear a similar red, white, and blue winter hat and take pictures to replicate these scenes:

Radio City Music Hall

People, Snapshot, Glasses, Human, Headgear, Temple, Photography, Eyewear, Neck, Cap,

Central Park

Snow, Winter, Freezing, Photography, Jacket, Child,

Yes,there are even more pigeons in NYC IRL than you see in the movie. The scene where Marv and Harry are being attacked by them is, quite frankly, any sane New Yorker's worst nightmare.

The Plaza Hotel

Religious institute, Rite, Event, Temple,

VISIT Yes, Donald Trump does make an appearance in the film. But let's not take our eyes off the prize, alright? Even this small glimpse of The Plaza Hotel is enough to take your breath away. Around the holidays, the iconic hotel is a sight to behold.

Empire Diner

Pedestrian, Mode of transport, Street, Vehicle,

VISIT As Eric P. says on Yelp, "It is easy to be a member of the clean plate club at the Empire Diner!" So you kind of have to stop by...Plus, it was good enough to make it into Home Alone 2 .

World Trade Center

Handrail, Guard rail, Reinforced concrete, Construction, Stairs, Architecture, Roof, Steel, Composite material, Building,

VISIT You know, just a kid casually hanging out on the rooftop of the World Trade Center. Though visiting One World Trade Center is very different from what it was when Kevin went in 1992, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum is certainly worth the trip.

Rockefeller Center

Photograph, Light, Christmas, Snapshot, Lighting, Christmas lights, Tree, Christmas ornament, Human, Darkness,

VISIT Be sure to walk through Rockefeller Center to see the Christmas tree and watch the ice skaters glide (and sometimes fall) at the rink. This photo of Kevin is the exact reaction you'll have when seeing it for the first time—or even the hundredth. It's magical!

Times Square

Metropolitan area, Metropolis, Urban area, City, Night, Downtown, Electronic signage, Landmark, Human settlement, Traffic,

VISIT Though I would certainly not add Times Square to the list of places to visit this time of year for people who have been, if you've never been to NYC, it's definitely a site to see. One note: it's not the most festive, so if your time here is limited, choose wisely!

HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NY FILMING LOCATIONS

nyc home tour

In a dash through the airport, Kevin finds himself separated from his family during the holiday season! Not to worry because he’s got the AMEX and he’s ready to make New York’s most famous sites his playground. But robbers Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci & Daniel Stern) are at it again, determined to thwart Christmas and Kevin’s fun. See sites from Home Alone 2 on the NYC TV & Movie Tour , the Holiday Lights & Movie Sites Tour , and the Central Park TV & Movie Sites Walking Tour .

NYC Filming Locations in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

The Plaza Hotel: Kevin’s first stop on his New York adventure is the famous Plaza Hotel. The only hotel Kevin knows the name of is one of the cities most recognizable landmarks, and also one of the most expensive. What’s bad for dad’s credit is good for Kevin though, who quickly adapts to the “suite life” (Get it!?). The Plaza has been featured in many other movies including Barefoot in the Park, Big Business, Almost Famous, American Hustle. Located across from Central Park and Grand Army Plaza this is the perfect spot for their troubles to ensue!

FAO Schwarz : Lucky for Kevin Duncan’s Toy Chest, based on the famous toy store featured in Home Alone 2  FAO Schwarz (now closed), was just across Fifth Avenue from The Plaza. This was the oldest toy store in America and this larger-than-life shop certainly upheld its reputation. Many celebrities, including Katie Holmes, Cindy Crawford and Angelina Jolie, shopped there to enjoy the finest toys in town. But in Home Alone 2 , “Duncan’s” is under threat from Marv and Harry. They hatch an evil plan to rob the store on Christmas Eve, and it’s up to Kevin to stop them.

Rockefeller Center : It wouldn’t be Christmas in New York without the infamous decorations and magnificent Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. In this Christmas wonderland, Kevin is reunited with his mother after thwarting Harry and Marv’s plan. The underground concourse features retail shops, great food, and an ice rink.

Central Park

Never let the cold, (or heat) discourage you from enjoying Central Park the way Kevin does. Like all New Yorkers Kevin needs his R & R and escapes to the largest oasis of nature in Manhattan. Full of interesting folks to have a chat with, it doesn’t take Kevin long to befriend a pigeon lady. Lucky for Kev she knows her way around and takes him to see a show atop Lincoln Center. Meanwhile across the park at Wollman Ice Skating Rink Marv steals a scarf and Harry plots their next crime.

Empire Diner: Only in New York, and possibly the circus, does Santa walk down the street on stilts. It’s down here on 10th Ave and West 22nd St in front of the Empire Diner where Mr. McCallister meets Mr. Claus. This famous diner would look familiar to any movie buff, as it’s also been featured in Men In Black II ,  Manhattan , and TV shows such as Rescue Me , and  Law and Order .

Battery Park

Located at the southern tip of Manhattan Island this land was previously a fortress for protecting the city. Luckily in Home Alone 2 New Yorkers can rely on Kevin McAllister to thwart those looking to do harm. It’s down here that Kev looks out at Lady Liberty and soaks in the awesomeness of his city adventure.

Best Historic House Museums in New York City To Visit

The opulent mansions of Westchester and the Hudson Valley filled with refurbished period art, architecture, expansive grounds, and resident spectres, right? Well … you’re not wrong, because that is my mental image as well.

Alas, even though New York City does not boast of these grand old homes, she does have historic houses that pack a punch in colonial, Revolutionary, and Civil War history, and yes, the occasional haunting as well. I mean, you don’t expect houses as old as four centuries to be free of spirits now, do you? These houses have since been turned into museums, some under the care of NYC Parks, and some on the National Register of Historic Places.

Let’s delve into some historic museums in New York City, some of which I’ve experienced, and some I hope to do soon.

Merchant’s House Museum: Historic House Museums in New York City

Article Contents

One solid piece of architectural history left in NYC as a throwback to a bygone era is Merchant’s House , built in 1831 and bought in 1835 by Seabury Tredwell, a wealthy merchant from Long Island. Seabury and his family lived and died here until his last child, Gertrude, died in the house at the age of 93 in 1933. Gertrude is said to still be wandering Merchant’s House… 👻

Merchant’s House is unique in that it still houses the 19th century art, furnishings, and possessions of the Tredwell family and those furnishings that have decayed over the decades have been refurbished to their original state. The parlour has Rococo Revival furniture, a pianoforte, gilt marble mirror, a detailed ceiling, and massive chandeliers, all of which were very opulent by NYC standards of the day. All these furnishings were indicative of family wealth in the era, and the Tredwell’s were rolling in it by all accounts.

This piece of NYC architectural history in NoHo is full of NYC stories and interesting family life of the 19th century era. For example, do you know that Victorian men did the food shopping? Yes. Men. Bucking gender roles in the 1800s. Furthermore, experience a wee bit of Victorian fashion by trying on a massive hoop skirt for giggles. I do so and wonder how women managed to sit in those things let alone pee!

Merchant’s House also mentions the female Irish immigrants, some as young as 14, that emigrated to the U.S. to be domestic servants in grand homes. There were so many of them in domestic service that it was seen as a stigma and as such, American women refused to do domestic work and saw it as beneath them. Ring a bell?

Take a socially distanced self-guided tour through Merchant’s House or stay cooped up with historic virtual tours from food of the day to life of an Irish servant girl .

Lefferts Historic Home: Historic House Museums in New York City

This simple homestead bungalow is in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, and is the home of the Lefferts family of the Netherlands. They were Dutch settlers that arrived in the 1630s to New Amsterdam – New York City’s first name – originally a Dutch colony before the Brits took over. The house was built in the 1780s and is currently owned by the NYC Parks Department.

Lefferts Home is an 18th century living museum exhibiting colonial Dutch life with a working garden, chopped wood, and historic remnants of colonial life. Tours are available – pandemic has scuttered that now – to show family life and the lives of the enslaved Africans that catered to their every desire and lived on the property with them.

The Lefferts family is one of the most popular Kings County (families) and descendants married into prominent colonial Dutch families of the day like Vanderbilts and Bergen, names of which are popular in NYC and on its landmarks.  There are many remnants of colonial Dutch history in Brooklyn and Lefferts Home is one of the few remaining historic house museums in New York City in which to experience this.

Lefferts Historic Home is currently closed for restoration.

Fraunces Tavern Museum: Historic Houses in New York City

Ever been to a tavern that doubles as a historic house museum? No? Then, hello Fraunces Tavern in downtown New York City!

Knock back a few as you learn about the history of 54 Pearl Street from its initial grant to Stephanus Van Cortlandt in 1686, its journey through the Revolutionary War – change of ownership, business designation, serving War generals – to its designation as a Historic District in 1977.

Little is known about the original tavern owner, Samuel Fraunces, and his portrait at the tavern is being disputed by a German historian who believes that the gentleman in the portrait was one of the intimate friends of Frederick the Great. Verily, the plot thickens!

Fraunces Tavern is famous for George Washington dining in and ordering take-out – like a regular human – after the British were routed out of New York City, the last U.S. city there were still in. In fact, November 23, 1783, is Evacuation Day in New York City where the Continental Army marched from the  Bowery to Wall St.

In its heyday, the tavern has been a boarding house, grocery, events place, dance hall, leased to the government’s War Office and Foreign Affairs Office… and of course, a political meeting place where Burr and Hamilton attended a Society of Cincinnati meeting before their duel.

*With NYC opening indoor dining at 25% occupancy, Fraunces Tavern is open for dining.

Historic Hunterfly Road Houses (Weeksville): Historic Houses in New York City

In 1838, James purchased a part of the Lefferts estate to create a landowning community, in conjunction with other African-American investors of the day. It is a historic site and cultural centre dedicated to preserving and documenting the history of Weeksville in pre-Civil War U.S.

The historic Hunterfly houses are on an old Native American trail with houses from the 1860s through 1930s still standing. They are single to two-story, wood-framed houses with backyard fences, containing historic artifacts reflective of the period the families lived in them, and are one of the well preserved African-American historic house museums in New York City.

Weeksville holds exhibits on diaspora art and oral histories of the former inhabitants of the community and is a wonderful experience for anyone wanting to learn about African-American communities in NYC of that era. Not much is known or told about these Black communities in NYC so Weeksville/Hunterfly Houses are the ideal historic homes to learn of them.

*In-house events and exhibits are on pause due to the pandemic but walk-in tours still available.

Smallpox Hospital: Historic Houses in New York City

This is more a historic ruin than a historic house museum, but it was once a complete property until the 1900s.

The Smallpox Hospital – located on the narrow  strip of land that is Roosevelt Island – was once the primary healthcare facility in the 1800s to receive and quarantine smallpox patients in New York City.

Anyway, once a viable smallpox vaccine was created in late 1800s and inoculations began, affliction rates rapidly dropped, and the number of patients dwindled at the hospital, thus forcing its inevitable closure. The empty structure was pilfered and roof collapse came next thus leaving only the walls standing for nature to take over… which she has done very well.

Presently, it is overgrown with ivy and is a home to nestling birds, ducks, and other species, with a new park is under construction around it. Smallpox Hospital is one of the highly recommended free things to do on Roosevelt Island on a cheap day trip from NYC .

Morris-Jumel Mansion: Historic Houses in New York City

The mansion is completed in 1765 as a Harlem summer home for British Colonel, Roger Morris and his wife, Mary Philipse – of the family for which Philipse Manor in Westchester is named for. I would’ve chosen anywhere with sun and sea as a summer retreat, but given the situation of the day – Revolutionary War – the mansion was built atop the highest point in Manhattan with surrounding views of the NY harbour, Jersey and Connecticut. It was also a working farm so you can be sure there were enslaved people here.

1776 rolls in and the Morris’ abandon the mansion, which Washington and his army quickly occupy for its vantage point and space. It changes hands several times until 1810 when Eliza and Stephen Jumel purchase the property and its farmlands. Eliza is much smarter than her husband and it is she who manages their real estate holdings even after her husband’s death. She passes in 1865 and the property is contested for over a decade!

The mansion goes through the Harlem Renaissance as the area draws in Black artists and writers of high calibre – Duke Ellington, Paul Robeson, and their peers. Paul Robeson even mentions Morris-Jumel as where an enslaved ancestor of his – he later buys his freedom –  offers his baking services to feed Washington and his troops.

Wander remotely through a virtual house tour of the mansion’s grand rooms and its furnishings and listen to the history behind them.

Old Stone House: Historic Houses in New York City

Old Stone House is one of the oldest farmhouses in New York City erected in 1699 by Dutchman, Hendrick Vechte. The property changed ownership from the Vechtes to the Cortelyous and then to Edwin Litchfield, the latter two names Brooklynites recognize. In fact, Litchfield Villa in Prospect Park is the site of spectre sightings since 1864 till present, where gargoyles and spirits are said to roam from a seance that released them into this world. Interesting…

Old Stone House is the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Revolutionary War – the Battle of Brooklyn – where the “Maryland 400” were slaughtered by the British. 400 Maryland soldiers were sent against 2,000 British troops and even though they fought valiantly, it was a losing battle as many Maryland soldiers perished.

After this battle, a Maryland Major commented that, “ the killed, wounded, and missing amount to two hundred and fifty-nine .” Until this day, it is unknown where these bodies are, buuuttt …

… it is presumed that they were buried across the street in the area that is now Staples on 348 4th Ave . In fact, this area is known to be one of the spookiest spots in Brooklyn .

Historic Richmond Town: Historic Houses in New York City

This is one of my favourite historic house museums in New York City for its living museum qualities and historical re-enactments.

Historic Richmond Town on Staten Island is a community of buildings once inhabited by colonial Dutch families and their English in-laws from the 1700s to 1890s. In the 1930s, an opportunity was seen for historic preservation of the area by the Staten Island Historical Society after the community had been abandoned in the late 1890s.

There are a number of areas that make up the larger Richmond Town community, such as:

  • Main Village
  • Decker Farm
  • Billiou-Stillwell-Perrine House

Over the decades, the community of historic houses and their untold histories have been brought to life by re-enactments from expert historians and craftspeople who have spent decades learning historic trades of carpentry, hearth-cooking, tin smithing, forgery, just like colonial craftspeople of the community.

Other interesting historical sights to see at Richmond Town are:

  • A brightly coloured printing shop in Main Village with 1800s era circulars seen in windows;
  • 18th century menus visible in windows of what seems to be a community kitchen,
  • A homestead generational graveyard of the Rezeau-Van Pelt Family
  • Historical Museum – once the County Clerk’s and Surrogate’s Office

This is definitely one of the more underrated historic house museums in New York City and is part of beautiful and safe places to travel in New York State this pandemic period.

Historic Richmond Town is open and offers capped weekend guided tours as well as online and limited in-person workshops & exhibits .

Fantastic post Kemi! I’ve never heard of any of these historic house museums, and want to see some the next time we’re back. You can definitely see the colonial influence in the white mansion!

Thanks Lisa! Definitely, the colonial architecture is evident in Morris-Jumel.

I love historic houses. I can’t believe that the Morris-Jumel Mansion is the only one on your list that I have visited. Especially the smallpox hospital looks super interesting!

Lol you’ll love Roosevelt Island where the Smallpox Hospital is. There’s a lighthouse and a converted asylum there. lol

This is cool and fun. Most people think of crowded Manhattan and Times Square as what typifies NYC but these historic places need more visitation.

I’ll have you know that I do the grocery shopping very regularly. A man of distinction like those 19th century gentlemen. I enjoy houses like this, but somehow I’m more enticed by ruins like the Smallpox museum. They are definitely more haunting.

“A man of distinction…” lol. I love that, John! I’m also enticed by ruins too and I’ll be looking out for more in NYS.

Love this collection of historic house museums. They’re all so diverse! Wouldn’t like to meet Gertrude though haha.

I haven’t been to NYC yet but will definitely try to visit some of these historic houses when I do. What a great list. I think Morris-Jumel Mansion would be top of my list and the smallpox hospital sounds intriguing.

These all sound like such fun places to visit! I love exploring the city I live in, and would definitely love to go to places like this if I was ever able to stay long term in NYC. I’ll have to see if there’s anything like this in the city I live in. There’s got to be, right!?!

I’m sure Australia has tons regardless of city lol

' src=

I never knew NYC has ruins! Interesting to know! Hopefully I can visit again and see them! Been a long time since my last.

' src=

Wow this seems like a such a great collection of historic places in New York City. As a fan of historic houses I’d definitely love to visit one day!

' src=

There is something about history that fascinates me when I visit a location in real life. I always disliked sitting in a classroom to study history as it is just too boring but give me a fascinating story about the people and places in real life or in a video in small chunks and I am golden.

I agree, Alvern! I love experiencing people and culture in real time.

' src=

what a list! totally makes me want to travel again. NYC is so wonderful, brings back very sweet memories

Very cool collection of museums that you have over in New york City. Always fun to learn about history for sure x

' src=

Wow! I did not realize that there are a lot of historic house museums in NYC. Too bad we never had a chance to visit during our last trip. I have a huge fascination with stone houses and would love to visit the old stone house in the future.

You’d love our plethora of historic homes here!

Great post, Kemi. Can’t believe I haven’t even heard of any of these. In most cases when I look at the pictures I find it hard to believe that this is New York City. Will aim to check out some of these on my next visit to town.

Our 1st day we concentrated on the many iconic sights of Midtown Manhattan, including inside the Empire State Building, NY City Library, Grand Central, Rockefeller Center, and many more including hidden gems along the way – all fantastic!!!

Amazing tour! We were fascinated the entire time. We ran into another of their guides while we were out and about – equally kind and gracious. We will definitely schedule some of their other tours next time we are in NYC.

Highly recommend the Gilded Age tour. Learned so much about a neighborhood I thought I knew so well. A great way to rediscover a city you love.

I gave my husband a private Gilded Age tour as a Christmas gift and we went on our anniversary in mid-January.  Quite honestly the tour was so interesting, that the weather didn’t distract us. We’ve both lived and worked in New York City so are very familiar with the city, but we learned so much!

This list of celebrities in NYC just the beginning, ya’ll. There are so many in New York City, Manhattan specifically. You know what to expect from Velvet Ropes’ celebrity maps, and the same is true for our upcoming NYC celebrity map. But until it’s launched, here’s a breakdown of a few highlights!

Celebrities in NYC Map : Map of the Stars NYC

Olivia Wilde & Jason Sudeikis

Actress Olivia Wilde lives in the Brooklyn area of New York. She and her husband Jason Sudeikis previously sold their home in the meatpacking district for a huge $3.8 million. They moved to Brooklyn from there and upgraded to a massive 6,300 square foot home in the Clinton Hill neighborhood. The home is truly beautiful, and in a great location for the couple and their son. The mansion recently went under renovation in which 100 new windows were fitted, as well as a state of the art air conditioning system and an upgrade to their private garden. It features a library, six fireplaces, a large living area with a hidden projector screen to transform the room into a cinema, high ceilings and a beautiful kitchen.

NYC Celebrity Map: Olivia Wild House

When in NYC, Lady  Gaga lives in a Central Park apartment with fabulous views of the city, and a pretty hefty price tag. The apartment is located at 40 Central Park South and it pretty spacey and luxurious for the star. It spreads across 2000 square feet and comes with an amazing FOUR terraces. It’s also super private, as neither size has neighbors either side. It also comes fitted with a giant marble stairway, a large dining room, a chef’s kitchen and a luscious master bedroom and en-suite bathroom.

Jessica Biel & Justin Timberlake

Actress Jessica Biel and superstar hubby Justin Timberlake have recently moved into the star-studded building in Greenwich, NYC. It is also home to the likes of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds and Jennifer Lawrence. The pair reportedly sold their previous New York pad for $6.65 million and splashed in excess of $20 million on their new penthouse in the building that runs along the Hudson River. It has 4 bedrooms, lots of open space and a beautiful outdoor terrace. The building itself comes with some pretty cool facilities and amenities including wet bars, gyms, a rooftop and an indoor pool that is 75 feet long.

Cameron Diaz

A-lister Cameron Diaz lives in a stunning Manhattan apartment that cost her a fair few pennies. The apartment (which cost around $9 million), is located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan and spreads across 2,400 square feet. Inside the home, the actress has decorated the interior with bold and vibrant pieces, as well as brass decor and bright colors. It really reflects the personality of Diaz. The interior of each room is slightly different, but each is just as magnificent and luxurious as each other. The rooms of the fancy apartment include a large guest bedroom and bathroom, a dining room, a grey and white (and perfectly clean) master bedroom, a bright kitchen, and so much more.

Katie Holmes

After actress Katie Holmes divorced from her ex-husband and fellow actor Tom Cruise, she moved her and her young daughter Suri to a leased apartment in the Chelsea area of Manhattan. The apartment has two bedrooms and two and a half stunning bathrooms and is rented for around $25,000 per month, which is a step up from the previous $12,500 apartment. The building is home to many other celebs, which means it has great privacy and a host of security and staff members. It also has a private laundry and concierge service, as well as a large rooftop, a pool, a gym and even a playroom for any kids that are living in the residence.

Hugh Jackman

Actor Hugh Jackman is the proud owner of a triplex apartment in Greenwich Village. He owns the 8th, 9th and 10th floor of the building, which spans across a huge space of 11,000 square feet in total. The home is very minimalistic and decorated in a simplistic yet luxurious and sophisticated manner. The rooms facing the Hudson River have HUGE floor to ceiling windows, which let in a great amount of natural light to the open space, and offer spectacular views of the city in the distance. Each floor has different facilities that fit the actor’s every need. Floor 8 has 3 bedrooms each with their own private bathroom, as well as a library and music room. Floor 9 has a beautiful living area with a double high ceiling and a dining room which can seat many guests, a kitchen, a wine cellar, and even a gallery. And last but not least, floor 10 has the master bedroom, a gym and sauna, and a private dressing room.

Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts lives with her partner Liev Schreiber and their two sons in an incredible Manhattan apartment. After they purchased the property, it was victim to awful flooding before they were due to move in. After months upon months of grueling renovation, and a whole lot of stress (and money!), the home was finally ready. It is decorated to perfection and is the ideal family home for this superstar clan. Some of its features include a large open space, a walk-in pantry, a large master bedroom, and a grand dining room. When asked about her newly refurbished home, Watts said, “I wanted a place where we could snuggle as a family. I didn’t want to make a showhouse. I wanted to make a true home for us.”

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys lives in a stunning mansion in Englewood, just outside the city of NYC. And with 32 rooms, it certainly is a place fit for a queen. It has 8 bedrooms, 10 full bathrooms, and 4 half bathrooms. Other facilities include an indoor pool, a garage fit for 5 cars and a tennis course, all spread across an incredible 25,000 square feet. It’s also got an entertainment room, a home theatre, a stunning kitchen, and a grand dining area.

NYC Celebrity Map: Alicia Keys House

Superstar A-lister Madonna was never going to do things by halves. And her house is no different. The singer lives in a beautiful NY townhouse on the Upper East Side. The home (which used to be three separate homes) is 57 feet wide and boasts 26 magnificent rooms. 13 of those rooms are bedrooms and a 38-foot wide drawing room. The home has 11 foot high ceilings, 9 fireplaces and a 3,000 square foot backyard, which can be enjoyed in the warmer months. Each room is decorated with a combination of modern and vintage design, which makes for a totally unique home – like the singer herself. Wooden floors, grand bathtubs, and beautiful art make the home very special indeed.

Cyndi Lauper

The True Colors singer Cyndi Lauper had spent 30 years living in Stamford, CT in a beautiful home. The home was spread across three bedrooms and four bathrooms, and a stunning outdoor pool. The house was built in 1976 and is the location in which Lauper wrote the famous Kinky Boots. It takes up around 1 and a half acres and has some incredible features, including a table and bench imported from an old-school Parisian train, her platinum records displayed proudly on the walls and a 19th century English manor house front door. It also has hand painted patterned walls, French tiles in the bathroom and stunning high ceilings. Cyndi and her husband sold the home in early 2018, to move to Manhattan where their son attends college.

Rapper 50 Cent has a huge mansion which sits just outside of Manhattan, in Connecticut. He has been trying to sell the 50,000 square foot property for many years but has been short of luck time and time again. The home is HUGE and has amazing features and fantastic decor, but it was originally put on the market for a staggering $18.5 million. What makes the home worth so much cash? Well, it has 19 bedrooms, a gym, basketball court, an indoor pool, a recording studio and even a small nightclub! It also has a large garage as well as a helipad for helicopters to land. It has grand designs, including marble floors and an opulent staircase in the reception area, a games room, home theatre and even its very own lake. The home is now up for sale for $5 million, and he spends more time in central New York.

NYC Celebrity Map: 50 Cent House

Leonardo DiCaprio

DiCaprio, one of the most well-known actors in Hollywood, is currently renting a penthouse in NYC. The apartment spreads across 3,548 square foot and has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and 1 half bathroom. It is worth $14 million and has three exposures and two outdoor terraces. It has floor to ceiling windows which offer spectacular views for the star to enjoy. The building itself has many fantastic amenities for the residents to use, which includes a spa and steam rooms, a saltwater pool, an outdoor plaza, a fitness studio, and a lounge. What more could you possibly need? Another 2 apartments apparently. Although the actor is currently spending time in this uptown apartment, he does actually own two other apartments, which are adjacent units and are located at 2 River Terrace in Battery Park. Those locations were purchased by DiCaprio in 2008 and 2014.

Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers home, which sold for an incredible $28 million after her sad death in 2015, was a giant penthouse filled with lavish luxuries and grand decor. Located at 1 East 62nd Street, off Fifth Avenue, the home was adjacent to her daughter Melissa, and grandson Edgar. The beautiful penthouse has 11 rooms, 4 of which are bedrooms and 4 of which are bathrooms. It also has 5 fireplaces for the colder winter months and two terraces which offer stunning views of both downtown NY and Central Park. A beautiful location for a beautiful soul! You can enter the elevator which takes you up to a grand ballroom, which also has a music room with 23-foot ceilings attached. This is where Joan hosted a number of celebrity-filled parties and gatherings.

NYC Celebrity Map: Joan Rivers Penthouse

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway and her hubby Adam Shulman recently moved from a $4.25 million loft in NYC, to a $2.55 million penthouse on the Upper West Side. Although a $2 million NYC penthouse sounds like a dream home for many of us non-celebs, for Anne and Adam, it was actually a downsize, but just as luxurious all the same. The 1,200 home has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a beautiful high ceilinged kitchen complete with a skylight to make it nice and fresh. It also has a wine storage area, a patio terrace, and a cozy living space. It is decorated in a modern manner, with greys and whites being the main theme consistent throughout the home.

Howard Stern

Howard Stern has spent an incredible $15 million on two apartments that are located on the 53rd floor of Manhattan’s Millennium Tower. The two apartments total 2,546 square foot and they sit just below his OTHER home, a penthouse which spreads across 4,149 on the 54th floor. Aside from his property in Manhattan, he also rents a large home in Southampton in The Hamptons in New York, whilst he waits for his Hamptons mansion to be finished being built.

Beyonce and husband Jay-Z bought what is known as the Pond House in The Hamptons in fall of 2017. And they splashed out a huge $26 million for the mansion. The home sits across 12,000 square foot and has 7 bedrooms and 7 and a half bathrooms. And of course, Queen Bee wouldn’t do things by halves. She has had marble imported from Verona, Italy for her bathrooms and hand-milled wood-work throughout the home. If the 12,000 isn’t enough, the property also features a 1,200 square foot guest house, complete with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, and living room. The living room in the main house has 30 foot high ceilings, which overlooks the pond and allows for beautiful sunset watching.

“As a first timer to New York, this is a great tour to give you a high-level understanding of 4 of the 5 boroughs.” Jack, Viator

With skyscrapers aplenty, Manhattan steals the spotlight. But in reality, it’s only one of five boroughs that make up New York City, and each boasts its own energy, landmarks and fantastic attractions.

On the Amigo Tours USA Boroughs Tour, you’ll get to discover Harlem , the birthplace of jazz and hip hop, Queens , home to the most diverse population in the world, the Bronx , renowned for its eccentric street art and Brooklyn , the NYC hipster capital.

Where modern skyscrapers contrast centuries-old churches and taverns; where the oldest immigration hub meets Wall Street; where the sobering 9/11 Memorial stands, the Financial District is so much more than finance.

This tour highlights the district’s most iconic landmarks — think the New York Stock Exchange, Trinity Church, Federal Hall and the Freedom Tower. Like you would on Wall Street tours , you’ll wander through the story-filled streets, hearing all about the city’s rich history, its status as the nation’s economic heart, and the impact of major events like the 9/11.

The best part? It’s totally free, making the Guru Walk one of the best cheap things to do in New York City .

  • free walking tours in NYC

Informative, entertaining, and totally free! What’s not to love? Besides being experts in local history and culture, Omar, William and the Guru Walk team are also happy to give recommendations on what to do later on. If you’re on a budget, we couldn’t speak any higher of this tour.

22 – New York City: The Ride Interactive Bus Tour

New York City The Ride Interactive Bus Tour

Rating: ⭐️ 4.3/5 ( 210 reviews )

“The Ride experience totally made our trip to NYC. The reviews and photos on line do not do it true justice. (…) I would recommend this to all ages and guarantee a great time. I would do it again tomorrow.” Clare, Getyourguide

Part city tour, part Broadway musical, and collectively a whole lot of fun!

Combining sightseeing with music and theater, The Ride is an interactive 75-minute bus tour that whisks you through the characteristic streets of Manhattan while entertaining and educating you with live performances.

Unlike typical bus tours, you actually face sideways, with the streets becoming the stage. That means one moment you’ll be serenaded in front of Grand Central, and the next you could be seeing a live ballet show at Bryant Park or a freestyle rap performance at Columbus Circle!

With 3 rows of stadium-style seats, unlike your typical Broadway theater, there’s no bad seat in the house.

Embodying the essence of New York, The Ride is one of the best ways to experience the city’s deep-rooted musical theater culture. It combines the best of both worlds – Broadway talent and landmark sightseeing – to show off the city in a way you’ve never seen before.

It’s one of our top picks for NYC city tours!

23 – NYC: Speakeasy Drinks and Prohibition History Tour

NYC Speakeasy Drinks and Prohibition History Tour

Rating: ⭐️ 4.7/5 ( 297 reviews )

“The speakeasy tour was a highlight of our trip for sure! Our guide Jack was awesome and had great drink recommendations. The three bars we went to had great atmosphere and delicious drinks and weren’t places we would have found on our own. Highly recommend!” Brianne, Getyourguide

These days, NYC is chock-full of craft breweries and lavish cocktail bars. But it wasn’t always this way. In the 1920s, Prohibition forced New Yorkers to drink in hiding.

On this NiteTables Experiences walk down memory lane, you’ll travel back in time to experience the roaring ’20s, popping into 3 historical watering holes around Midtown Manhattan.

Unlike most pub crawls in New York City , this one’s heavily educational; Cocktails in hand, you’ll learn about infamous bootleggers, notorious gangsters and the women of the Gilded Age. Overall, not only is it one of the best New York City night tours , it’s one of the best NYC city tours, period.

The perfect combination of fun and educational, this thirst-quenching tour makes a point to venture away from the cliché tourist spots.

Since drinks aren’t included you have the freedom to order whatever libations take your fancy too. Thanks to Jack, Ariel and the guides being so welcoming and insightful, this tour is an excellent option.

When the annual festive season rolls around, the Big Apple lights up like no other city. But there’s one quiet Brooklyn neighborhood that puts the rest to shame: Dyker Heights.

But you’re not just stuck on the bus – on foot, you’ll wander through the neighborhood and get to witness the dazzling, often music-synced houses up close.

The view of the lit-up Brooklyn Bridge at tour’s end is the cherry on top.

Chelsea Market

Eager to see some of New York City’s hidden gems and experience one of the city’s best neighborhoods like a local, I signed up for the three-hour Chelsea Market, High Line, and Hudson Yards Food & History Tour .

Our small group of five included a young couple from Romania, a local couple from Queens, and myself. We met each other and our guide, Chris Goodrich, outside the Chelsea Market . Chris, a baker, was knowledgeable and entertaining. He began our tour by telling us about the history of Chelsea Market.

The market was built in the 1890s and was the original site of the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco – the company that invented Oreos!)  It takes up a full city block in the edgy Meatpacking District, a famous area in New York known for its food and shops. The market has a cool, factory look with metal pipes, big steel doors, and red brick walls.

Chelsea Market is pretty busy, and one thing I loved about taking a food tour was that you get to skip the lines. You also don’t need to buy anything as all your tastings are included.

Chris led us to our first of many food stops: Zack & Zoe Sweet Bee Farm . At the stylish food cart, we tasted twelve tempting varieties of pure, raw honey displayed in glass jars on a marble counter.

Zack & Zoe Sweet Bee Farm

Five years ago, Zack & Zoe’s owners wanted to find a natural cure for their little one’s allergies. They discovered the benefits of raw honey and decided to begin beekeeping. When they realized how helpful the raw honey was, they began to sell the honey from their beehives.

Some honey flavors we tasted at Zack & Zoe Sweet Bee Farm:

  • Wildflower Honey with Blueberry
  • Wildflower Honey with Matcha
  • Buckwheat Honey
  • Creamed Wildflower Honey

My top pick was the Creamed Wildflower Honey for its unusual texture.

On our way to our next stop, Chris pointed out Li-Lac Chocolates, who had their 100th anniversary last year, and still makes their chocolates by hand in small batches.

Joey Bats Café

I had just come back from Lisbon and thought there was no way the Pasteis de Nata in America could match the ones from Portugal. But I was totally surprised!

Chris popped over to Joey Bats Café  and came back to our group with a box of warm, creamy tarts that melted in my mouth with a hint of cinnamon. It was like biting into a warm crème brulee with a flaky croissant. Delicious!

These pastries were invented in Lisbon in the early 1800s and have a light, flaky shell filled with rich, creamy egg custard. The custard is baked to a brown sweetness. Joey Bats Café serves them warm and dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar.

Filaga Pizzeria

Next, we went to  Filaga Pizzeria , named after a small village near Palermo, Sicily.

We followed Chris outside, taking shelter from the rain at heated, covered tables, and he gave us options on which type of pizza we wanted. The fact that Like a Local Tours gave us options was an aspect of this tour that I really enjoyed.

Here, we chose between two types of traditional Italian pizza. Sicilian Puttanesca, which features olives and capers, or a slice of New York-style pizza with Margarita topping. I opted for the latter and enjoyed every crispy bite.

Filaga makes the pizza fresh every day with special ingredients from Italy. The crust is light and tastes amazing.

Takumi Taco

Chris went to Takumi Taco  to order our next tasting, and I chatted with the other people in our group. It was fun finding out why they each chose to take this tour.

Then Chris returned with our next tasting – Japanese-style curry tacos with cotija cheese and Napa cabbage slaw tucked inside a crispy gyoza shell. Delicious!  I made a note to come back for more of these.

So far all of the tastings had been generous-sized portions, and I’d added each to my list of places I wanted to return to. The portions were full-sized, so I was glad I hadn’t eaten before the tour.

The Doughnuttery

Chris handed us a menu from the Doughnuttery , and together we chose our favorite flavors from their exotic collection: Green Tea Buzz, Salted Caramel, Cookies and Cream, Flower Power, and PBCP (Peanut butter, Cayenne and Pretzel.)

Some of the other unusual flavors the Doughnuttery offers are equally exotic – Pumpkin Pie Brulee, Fruity Cereal, and Purple Pig, which is made from bacon, maple, and purple potato.

After eating a big box of these colorful small donuts, we went inside to watch the Doughnut Robot, a donut-making machine that’s entertaining to see.

Time to explore Chelsea Market

The delicious food we’d had was filling, so Chris gave us about forty-five minutes to explore Chelsea Market on our own. With so many cool shops and eateries, it was difficult to choose where to go first.

There are shops selling handmade cheese, delicious deserts, and fresh produce, It’s the best food court I’ve seen in Manhattan.

The Market is a fun, bright place with twinkling lights, cool art on the walls, and lots of people talking and laughing. I enjoyed people-watching as well as exploring the many hip shops and eateries.

I suggest checking out a map online in advance so you don’t waste time looking for your favorite shops.

Next, we walked to Market 57  on the Hudson River. Pier 57 was built in 1907 as a shipping terminal. Market 57 opened there in April of 2023, and is home to more than a dozen eateries, two of which we were about to visit for tastings.

First Chris took us to the rooftop, though, for an amazing view of lower Manhattan!

At Nom Wah  we tried pan-fried dumplings. Both varieties were delicious. We had chicken with cabbage and pork with shrimp. The original Nom Wah restaurant in Manhattan dates back to 1920. It’s called Nom Wah Tea Parlor and is a bakery that also serves dim sum.

Here at Market 57, Nom Wah doesn’t have a “tea parlor” in its name like the original store does, but their dumplings are delightful.

For our final tasting, we visited Malai  for ice cream. This wasn’t just any ice cream, though, it was ice cream with a twist. Malai draws its flavor ideas from exotic spices around the world. So you can choose flavors such as Confetti Sweet Milk, or Lemon Cardamom, or Star Anise.

The High Line Park

After leaving the bustling Market 57, we headed to the High Line  Park, a stark contrast with its quiet greenery and art displays. It felt great to walk off all that food. The High  Line is a public park built on an elevated historic freight rail line.

Chris pointed out the park’s history and the unique windows shaped like lanterns that allow more light into the apartment buildings we passed. While most of the plants are better appreciated in warmer seasons, the street art is fun to look at all year long.

Next, and last on the tour, would have been Hudson Yards, a shopping complex with a huge building called the Vessel that has 154 flights of stairs. But because it was raining, our group decided to end the tour early at the High Line Hotel , a beautiful mid-1800s building in the Chelsea neighborhood.

It was a great tour, with a lot of food, and I enjoyed every delicious bite.

Parting Thoughts

As our tour came to a close, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for the adventure I’d just experienced. Wandering through the vibrant streets of New York with Chris and our small, diverse group, I felt like I was seeing the city with fresh eyes.

This wasn’t just a tour; it was a reminder of the beauty of exploration and the joy of sharing those discoveries with others. I left not just with a full stomach, but with a full heart, eager to explore more of what New York City has to offer next time I go sightseeing in Manhattan.

Accommodations

Chelsea Market, High Line, and Hudson Yards Food & History Tour  was possibly the best food tour in New York City I’d ever taken. Here are some nearby places to stay in the Big Apple:

Hyatt Place New York City / Times Square

The Hyatt Place New York City , located at  350 W 39th Street in Manhattan, has a great location and their breakfast is delicious.

The Pod Times Square

The Pod Times Square , also in a great location at 400 W 42nd St, is a good bet for budget-conscious travelers and has a nice lounge to relax in.

The Marriott Marquis

More upscale is the Marriott Marquis , located at 1535 Broadway, just north of Times Square, right in the heart of New York City’s theater district.

Tips for taking a food tour

  • There is more than enough food on this tour, and it’s great food! Make sure you come with an empty stomach so you can taste everything.
  • Bring some extra cash, as while all the tastings are included, you may want to purchase items to take home with you – there are so many things to try and buy.
  • Dress for the weather. New York can be icy cold in the winter and quite warm in the summer. Don’t forget a jacket and an umbrella, if rain’s in the forecast.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. You don’t have to walk far, but you’ll be standing a lot and walking along the High Line. You’ll do a lot of walking while in New York City anyway, so choose to be comfortable.
  • Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. You’ll be glad you did!
  • Ask questions. The small groups feel like private tours, and you’ll have plenty of the guide’s attention.

Kyle kinane interview: the prolific comedian takes us behind the scenes.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Bearded comedian Kyle Kinane smiles in front of a red curtain.

In just the past year, Kyle Kinane released two soulful, uninhibited and often hilarious stand-up specials.

Yet, for the 47-year-old comic, he sees his exceptional output as just part of the job.

“I have an hour that I present, and when I think it’s at its best, I record it and put it out,” Kinane told the New York Post in an exclusive interview.

“It’s similar to the UK model where you’re like, ‘alright, here’s this year’s offering,’ but while that’s being perfected, the new stuff is in the oven.”

And, true to form, the hardworking Chicago native and current Portland resident is already back on the road after dropping the excellent, expertly constructed special “DirtNap” on Monday, March 4.

As of now, Kinane has dates booked from March all the way up until November on his nationwide ‘It’s Not A Tour, It’s The Job Tour.’

That includes three shows at Albany’s Funny Bone on May 17-18.

“On this run, I’m exploring the idea of fight or flight as a human response to threats,” Kinane explained. “I don’t have that. I always wind up sticking around and not fighting, just being near things that would put me in peril.”

Exploring new concepts is nothing out of the ordinary for Kinane, who sees ample stage time in front of paying audiences as a gift, rather than a burden.

“Every weekend I’m at a club, that’s four or five hours onstage,” he noted. “That’s a lot of time to take an idea and run with it.”

As a result, the bellowing comic — whose gruff voice you may recognize from 2010s-era Comedy Central ads — has seen his act evolve over the years.

“I’m trying to move away from party stories,” he chuckled. “I’m a middle-aged man and those aren’t glamorous.”

While partying may no longer appeal to Kinane, there really is no better party in comedy than catching his laugh out loud act live.

And if you want to see the “Fast and the Furious”-loving comic flesh out his new hour live, it isn’t too late to grab tickets for all 61 (!) of his upcoming shows .

Below, we’ve got everything you need to know and more about Kyle Kinane’s 2024 ‘It’s Not A Tour, It’s The Job Tour’ below.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Kyle Kinane 2024 tour schedule

There will be plenty of chances to catch Kinane live this year.

“I’m not taking a break from something else to do standup,” Kinane said, explaining his humorous, meta tour name. “I’m not a TV show person. This is what I do all the time. It’s not going to stop.”

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets to catch the stand-up lifer live can be found here:

How to watch Kyle Kinane comedy specials

Want to catch up with Kinane’s comedy before seeing him live this year?

Here’s how you can find all seven of his specials.

“Death of the Party” (2010) is streaming on YouTube “Whiskey Icarus” (2012) is streaming on YouTube “I Liked His Old Stuff Better” (2015) is streaming on YouTube “Loose in Chicago” (2016) is streaming on YouTube “Trampoline in a Ditch” (2020) is streaming on YouTube “Shocks and Struts” (2023) is streaming on YouTube “DirtNap” (2024) is streaming on 800 Pound Gorilla

Behind the scenes of “Dirtnap”

“Dirtnap,” Kinane’s seventh special, is an impressive feat in that the self-described storyteller crams so many hard punchlines into his 72-minute set that you often forget you’re not just having a conversation with the funnyman about moving to the suburbs, riffing on “The Fast and The Furious” franchise and goofing on his kind, Midwestern parents.

Still, per usual, the comic stays humble about his excellent output.

“I can’t write a lot of jokes, but I can beat the s— out of one joke for about 15 minutes,” he shared. “I can take one premise and not leave any meat on the bone. I’m punch line flush, but premise negative.”

As he did with his last album “Shocks and Struts,” Kinane enlisted a fellow comic to direct the special. Last time around, it was Jonah. This year, Bobcat Goldthwait was behind the camera.

“It’s nice to have someone who knows the technical aspect of directing and is a standup up who can say ‘what if you said this part in this section of the show?’ because it would call back to this,” Kinane said.

He and Goldthwait were also grateful that Minneapolis’ Acme Comedy Company were so gracious.

“Recording a special where I get to do a Thursday night, two shows on a Friday and record on Saturday, makes everyone more comfortable being in there,” Kinane pointed out. “Then, Bobcat can be in there, I can see how this is going to look on camera as opposed to ‘Here’s a new venue you’ve never played and there’s your one or two shots to get this right.'”

Typically, when all is said and done, there’s quite a bit of mixing and matching from different sets. However, Kinane ended up mostly using just one of his hours for the final product.

“We recorded the two Saturday shows and I think the tape is just the late show Saturday that went so well. I was like ‘Just use that whole one.’ There are very, very few edits in it.”

And while Kinane lovingly rags on his parents over the hour — even though they get their comeuppance — he was quick to gush about how wonderful they really are.

“They’re great,” he smiled. “They come to every show I do in Chicago and they go see my friends who are performing. They’re in their 70s and they’ll be like, ‘I saw Shane Torres is at Zanies. Would he care if we got tickets?'”

Finally, for those wondering, yes, Kinane truly does love “The Fast and The Furious” films.

“I see them in theaters,” the now-mustachioed comic deadpanned. “I love it. People can have their ‘Star Wars’ movies. I can have this.”

Kyle Kinane beard

Over the past decade, Kinane has become well-known for his iconic beard.

These days though, he’s rocking the ‘stache.

“I was so busy with moving, working, the holidays and the beard got real out of control,” he told us. “I usually keep it in check. And I didn’t for a long time then I was like, ‘we just gotta harvest this whole thing down and start fresh.’ This is my whittlings right now.”

“The beard will be back,” Kinane added. “Look at this face. There’s nothing to be proud of here.”

Up and coming comedians

Although he’s ascended to headliner level status, Kinane is always quick to pay it forward to those on their way up.

Over the course of our interview, he name checked Sam Tallent , Simon Gibson , Deb DiGiovanni , Shain Brenden , Sean Jordan , Kate Murphy , Adam Pasi , Geoff Asmus and Noah Watson as comics to keep an eye on.

And if they come to your town, Kinane recommends catching them at your local club.

“You really gotta see them live you got to be in the room with them,” he suggested. “There’s an energy that’s hard to capture watching through a screen.”

2000s Chicago comedy scene

Comedy has evolved quite a bit since Kinane’s early days in Chicago.

“The concept of a standup comedian has changed because now you also have to be a social media personality,” Kinane said. “That means smiling and being in the photos but fans like their favorite comics for being curmudgeons on stage, but then they’re mad if they were rude to them afterwards.

It’s like, ‘no, that’s the person.’ They’re being honest.”

Back when he began, it was all just about making people laugh.

“It was a heavily inebriated scene,” Kinane said. “It was people that just wanted to be really good at comedy. You weren’t going to be famous. And comedy was kind of a dead zone at the turn of the century.”

“You had a lot of people that dropped out of Second City because they saw the kind of pyramid scheme that that was,” he continued.

“You also had this really strong poetry and spoken-word scene, but there’s people that were too silly for that. So then they kind of filtered into standup.”

“Also, mentally ill people, outside are artists types.”

While it sounds like this might not have fostered successful comics, many huge names came out of this scene.

Along with Kinane, Hannibal Buress , T.J. Miller , Cameron Esposito, Pete Holmes , Beth Stelling , Matt Braunger and Kumail Nanjiani regularly performed for free in the Windy City way back when.

“It was Monday night at The Lion’s Den,” Kinane recalled. “That was the spot. There were 40 people on the list for the open mic. You’d get booked here and there but mostly you’re excited about that one. And people were excited about new jokes from each other and would help each other.

I might be looking at it with rose colored glasses, but I thought it was a really nurturing scene. A lot of people were legit lunatics also. That made it fun too.”

House Tour | Josh Brolin

The actor gives a tour of his guesthouse and airstream trailer in malibu, calif..

Hey, this is Josh Brolin. Welcome to my home in Malibu. It’s a beautiful day today. Come on in, let me show you around. [MUSIC PLAYING] This is the big room. I like the big room. It holds most of the art that I have. I grew up on a ranch in Paso Robles, California. I’ve always liked the ranch feel, so I think there’s a lot of California influences. I love playing pool. I remember playing in Barney’s Beanery once, and Sean Penn was behind me, and “The Color of Money” had just come out, and I had a big pompadour at the time, and Sean Penn says, “Look, another Tom Cruise wannabe.” [BILLIARD BALL SMACKS] [LAUGHS] To be in a kitchen like this, the only downfall is that I don’t want to cook in it because it’s so nice, but we do. [MUSIC PLAYING] We’re in one of two offices. There’s a lot of books. I’ll do a lot of reading in here. This is Cormac McCarthy’s book, “No Country for Old Men,” which is a film that I did with the Coens. And when Cormac came to the set, he used my fake blood. That’s his fingerprints and his signature. [MUSIC PLAYING] This is my most prized wall of art, for sure. [FOOTSTEPS CRUSHING GRAVEL] Here’s the writer’s room. It’s inspired by Dylan Thomas’s shed. The most important aspect to me is this. [CLICK] It’s the single light. [CLICK] I missed that when I was a kid. The story of this — it was the trailer of one of the characters of a movie I did called “Hail, Caesar!” [MUSIC PLAYING] When people come over, this is where we meet, this is where we talk about business. Ahh, yeah, we could take this on the road if we wanted to. [MUSIC PLAYING]
