How You Can Cruise With Rock Legend Melissa Etheridge By DeMarco Williams

January 29, 2020

melissa etheridge cruise

Melissa Etheridge has been taking her unforgettable husky voice and guitar on the road since her self-titled debut stormed onto the rock charts in 1988. So, preparing for a lengthy spring 2020 tour for her 15th effort, The Medicine Show , isn’t a big deal. Four or five quality outfits? Check. Workout shoes? Of course. Rice cooker? Long story, keep reading.

We’re not exactly sure what the Grammy and Oscar winner has planned on packing for The Melissa Etheridge Cruise on October 20 to 26, but whatever it is, you can bet it won’t be stuffy. No, this voyage, with stops to places like Key West and Ocho Rios , Jamaica, on the itinerary, promises to be informal, funny and filled with good music.

But before hopping onto to the proud Kansas native’s website to reserve your own ocean-view cabin aboard the Norwegian Pearl , read below as Etheridge discusses cruise details, career highlights, packing tips and the Forbes Travel Guide-rated restaurant she can’t get enough of.

melissa etheridge cruise

I’ve been on my share of cruises, but I haven’t been on a Melissa Etheridge cruise.

This is a special cruise; it really is. I resisted for a long time the cruise thing. I was like, “No, no. That’s not rock ’n’ roll.” I just didn’t want to. And then, finally, I was convinced that I could do it my way. I had said, “Look, if I could do it my way, if I could have all the things I want, then maybe I’ll go.”

We’ve done it three times now, and it’s just gotten better and better. Obviously, the crowd is largely made up of women, but men are completely welcome. And they’re of all types: there’re gay, straight, everything in between. It’s not separated at all. It is very much welcome to everyone. And that is one thing that I want to very much emphasize. Yes, of course, there will be a lot of lesbians, but that’s the way we roll. But if you’ve ever been around a lot of lesbians, [you know that] we’re a lot of fun. It’s like swimming with dolphins — it’s quite a lot of fun!

And the music is the focus. Last year we had kind of a ’90s [feel with] Joan Osborne, Paula Cole and Shawn Colvin. This year, we kind of have a little younger, hipper thing with [indie band] Tegan and Sara and [comedian] Tig Notaro. I just love inviting fans and groups that I see in my travels, and artists that I really think would be fun to watch live. That’s what it’s about — the live music.

I’ll do different songs than I normally do because you know when I come to your town that might be the only time that you’re going to see me. So yeah, I’m going to do all the hits at every show I do. But on a boat full of people who are going to see at least two shows, if not more, on the boat, I’m going to do songs that I haven’t done in years.

We do a lot of fun things on the boat and, you know, the things that matter to me, like health. I went through breast cancer 15 years ago, and I am 15 years cancer-free now. It’s important to me that people know that there are things you can do to help your chances of not being sick. So, we really kind of sprinkle that in all the things [on the cruise].

And the one thing I’m so proud of is that people have said that they just feel good on the boat, that it’s welcoming.

Between shows, are you off by yourself or are you interacting with the guests?

My time is really scheduled, but I consider the whole seven days that I’m on the boat work. If I’m not doing a show, I’m introducing other artists. There’s [also] a meet-and-greet, where I meet everyone and take a picture with them. That’s a lot. That’s several hours.

We do schedule time off that my wife and I can sit on the deck and just chill. But I am a part of the cruise. I don’t hide. After a while, people get used to seeing me. The production company that does this [cruise] is called Sixthman. They know how to do a show like this really well. It’s a lot of work but we really do hyperserve the fans. It’s a lot of fun.

melissa etheridge cruise

You’ve put in the work for decades to get to the point where you can headline a cruise. What are some of the things that you’ve done in your career that put the biggest smiles on your face?

When I look at being able to do a cruise, I know it’s because I put, first and foremost, my priority of being known as a live-entertainment act, to be known as someone that [makes fans say], “Oh, I have to see this before…” or “Oh, I’ve heard so much about how good this show is that I want to go see it.”

I’ve been able to survive what the music industry has gone through. No matter which record companies come and go, I can still go to a town, put on a show, touch people and they want to come back and see me. People see me multiple times. And that’s priceless to me.

I’m so blessed, so, so blessed — from performing with Bruce Springsteen, my idol, to [participating in] Woodstock ’94 to performing for the past four presidents. I haven’t performed for…well, actually, before [Donald Trump] was president, I performed for him, but I didn’t know he was in the audience. So, you know, just the opportunity to walk my life and make my choices and be the true person I am and still have a career, I’m just blessed.

The Medicine Show tour is coming up. What is the toughest part about being on the road?

The travel can be wearing, but that’s the challenge. My wife and I have gotten really good at cutting it down to me wearing four things. We’ve really gotten our clothing set.

Health becomes super important so we have a routine. We have workouts that we do. It’s a very scheduled routine thing, which we end up enjoying and we do very well.

We do love seeing new places. On days off, we’ll go to restaurants. We are quite foodies and we love to check out the female chefs in different cities and check out their food. We enjoy that.

melissa etheridge cruise

Speaking of food, it appears that the tour is making a lot of stops on the East Coast and the South. Which cities stand out with really good restaurants?

[This tour] is a lot of New York City , Boston and New Jersey, and then we go South. Gosh, I’m trying to think. We’re big Tom Colicchio fans. When we’re in [Manhattan], Gramercy Tavern is probably our favorite restaurant in the city… Oh, I’m blanking. Just like when people ask me who I’m listening to, I can’t ever remember anything!

Do you bring a lot of healthy things with you on the road to eat or do you seek out restaurants with healthy menu items on them?

On my workdays, the routine sees us working out in the morning and then we have amenities riders at the hotels that ask for lemons, oat milk and avocados. We carry a little rice cooker that we make oatmeal in. We go through a couple [rice cookers] a tour because it’s a rough road.

So, every morning we have oatmeal with oat milk and probably have a little raw honey. That’s routine. Then we go to the gig and we have our catering there. But on our days off, we will do the oatmeal in the morning, but we love to find food in every town.

When you’re touring or on vacation, what are some things you pack — well, besides a rice cooker?

I learned to be very light with my carry-on. So, my carry-on is going to have my iPad, my headphones, a hat and scarf. Our bags are going to have clothes in one and then there’s another one that has the rice cooker, my workout shoes and [this workout tool] called a Hydrovolt. It’s a massager. It’s like a thumper massager.

melissa etheridge cruise

You use that on your legs and back, right?

Yeah, yeah, yeah! That’s a big saver. Especially when you fly and stuff, [the sitting] can really mess up your hips and stuff. It’s about stretching all the time. And we have a roller.

What else do we bring? Oh, we also have a thing called a NormaTec, which are compression boots. I’m actually in one right now because we just worked out. It’s really, really good. I saw Lady Gaga tweet a picture of her in the boots and arm sleeves. It’s just this wonderful compression thing that, if you’re a traveler, I would highly recommend it. It’s a wonderful invention.

When you have some downtime, what do you like doing?

I love taking walks. I love going into the towns. I love finding your local stores, either your local coffeehouses or your local art areas [of town]. You know, every town sort of has one, especially these deep Midwestern towns like Omaha, Nebraska.

Omaha has a beautiful arts scene happening there. They’re really coming alive from the inside. Cleveland, Ohio , is really amazing. [We like] places that you would think, “Oh, who wants to go there?” I really try to get into a town, get to know people and just check out the flavor.

ABOUT MELISSA ETHERIDGE:  Melissa Etheridge stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, which led to an appearance on the 1989 Grammy Awards show. For several years, her popularity grew around such memorable originals as “Bring Me Some Water,” “No Souvenirs” and “Ain’t It Heavy,” for which she won a Grammy ®  in 1992. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes I Am (1993). The collection featured the massive hits, “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second Grammy ®  Award for Best Female Rock Performance. In 1995, Etheridge issued her highest charting album, Your Little Secret, which was distinguished by the hit single, “I Want to Come Over.” Her astounding success that year led to Etheridge receiving the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996.

Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Etheridge has remained one of America’s favorite female singer-songwriters for more than two decades. In February 2007, Melissa Etheridge celebrated a career milestone with a victory in the “Best Song” category at the Academy ®  Awards for “I Need to Wake Up,” written for the Al Gore documentary on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth. As a performer and songwriter, Etheridge has shown herself to be an artist who has never allowed “inconvenient truths” to keep her down. Earlier in her recording career, Etheridge acknowledged her sexual orientation when it was considered less than prudent to do so. In October 2004, Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer, a health battle that, with her typical tenacity, she won. Despite losing her hair from chemotherapy, Etheridge appeared on the 2005 Grammy ®  telecast to sing “Piece of My Heart” in tribute to Janis Joplin. By doing so she gave hope to many women afflicted with the disease.

On October 7, 2016, Melissa Etheridge released  Memphis Rock & Soul , her first album since 2014’s critically lauded  This Is M.E.  Recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis, the album has received stellar reviews from the likes of Entertainment Weekly, Parade, Rolling Stone, American Songwriter and more. Guitar World raved “the album is a triumphant application of Etheridge’s signature rasp and substantial guitar chops to this classic genre,” while Edge Media Network declared Melissa “is a singer who can fire it up like Janis Joplin, touch the heart like Elvis Presley and steam up the windows like her musical hero, Otis Redding.” The 12- track album features original material as well as interpretations of classic songs from the legendary Stax catalog, celebrating its artists and legacy and spotlighting the vital role Stax Records played in the Civil Rights Movement. Engineered by Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell, son of famed music producer Willie Mitchell, the album and tour includes a number of top Memphis musicians, including the Hodges Brothers.

Melissa Etheridge and Jewel to Coheadline 2021 Cruise

Melissa Etheridge and Jewel

The lesbian rockstar promises duets and a female-empowered lineup, and tells Out Traveler  why Jewel is the perfect cohost.

Initially, Melissa Etheridge admits she wa s lukewarm to the idea of hosting a cruise. “I said no for years to a cruise,” she recalls. “In the late ’90s management and folks started talking to me about cruises. And I said 'No, no, no way! Trapped on a boat with my fans?'”

Etheridge had cause to be nervous. In the 1990s, the lesbian singer-songwriter was topping charts and racking up awards. Her first Grammy came in 1992. The following year, her fourth album, Yes I Am featured the megahits “I'm the Only One” and “Come to My Window” (which brought Etheridge her second Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Performance). In 1995, Etheridge issued her highest charting album, Your Little Secre t, featuring the hit single, “I Want to Come Over,” which earned her a Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996. In those days, the fans were fervent.

I recall a friend having women's panties delivered to venues where Etheridge performing .

“Yes, they were definitely like that back in the ’80s and ’90s!” Ethridge laughs. “Nowadays we’ve all slowed down a little bit. They don’t throw the panties much anymore – the bras, I get one once, twice a year maybe. It’s rock and roll and it’s all in good fun. I don’t think anyone would ever want to hurt me.”

And, as time passed, Etheridge started to warm to the idea of hosting a cruise for her fans. So, in 2016 she took the plunge. And the singer was surprised by what she got out of  it. “It was actually more of an experience for me — I think my fans had a great time  —  but just being there, realizing that there’s actually 3,500 people that really want to spend a week with you on a boat. And how freeing it was just to do all the songs I wanted. I could just do anything I wanted.” That gave Etheridge an opportunity to have unique interactions with her fans that she wouldn’t have when performing predetermined sets at a stadium concert. And it’s what’s brought her back for what will be her 4 th cruise.

"I can’t believe we've been cruising for four years now” Etheridge shared in a statement to the press earlier this week. “Every year it gets better and better....the music, the roundtables, the food, the excursions, and especially the fans! I'm so excited about the incredible line up of musicians and speakers we have this year. I can't wait to set sail!

“The thing that really flows through everyone is this sense of kindness, love of music, these great artists,” Etheridge muses. “Knowing that they’re expecting kindness, so knowing that that’s the expectation that this is a kind, joyful boat.”

Ethridge says one aspect of that is the cruise’s inclusivity. Although she acknowledges, “Yes the majority is lesbians and they are the majority of the women,” Etheridge makes it clear, “There are men on the boat — not a whole lot of them — but there are husbands, there are boyfriends and brothers…and kids. There are some [trans] men and some gay men. It’s beautiful!”

Etheridge tells  Out Traveler , “My favorite thing is that I get to go on a boat and know that every show I do I can do completely different because these fans know so much of my catalog. They’re there to hear the music. And I really love connecting with the fans so much. Probably my favorite thing is connecting with the other artists. When the day is done and we’re all hanging out, that might be my favorite, just really getting to know these great artists.”

It’s the music that draws and connects those who sign up for the Etheridge cruise, which is produced by Sixthman and this time sails aboard the Norwegian Jewel November 12-18, 2021 traveling from Miami to Great Stirrup Cay, Ocho Rios, and Nassau.

Guests will be able to partake in various activities, including two exclusive performances by Etheridge, a photo op with the star, and concerts from a supporting cast of musicians that includes Dorothy, Shawn Colvin, Lucy Spraggan, Wendy Moten, Sonia Leigh, and Antigone Rising. This year passengers will get even more music, with the just-announced addition of four-time Grammy Award Nominee and multi-platinum selling singer-songwriter Jewel to the lineup.

Even more special, the two megastars will perform on stage together. “Some artists don’t like to duet, I’ll sing with anybody,” says Etheridge. “I’ve sung with her before so I know she’ll duet with me. If nothing else, we’ll recreate the VH1 Duets of ’95 where we sang ‘You Can Sleep While I Drive.’ Jewel is just perfect. We’re both from that’90s era. We both rode that wave of female singer-songwriters in the ’90s. She’s down to earth, knows how to play, so she’s perfect. And my fans love her music.”

Etheridge remains bullish on cruises, and she has reason to be optimistic. In the past month alone, she says, “we’ve sold 90 cabins so this cruise has such an impact on people that they will buy tickets even in a pandemic. They know we’re going to be beyond careful and safe. And Norwegian cruise line is keeping us updated every month.”

“I don’t think it will be the death of cruising because people like it,” Etheridge adds, thinking about the industry at large after the crushing impact this year has had. “It’s a beautiful way to get around and travel and not have to worry about so many things  —  flying or driving and stuff like that. I think it’s fabulous.”

Looking to the future, she reveals, “We will be getting involved in more destination vacations too not just cruising. We really want to spread out. For those that cruising is not there thing after this cruise we’re going to look into land choices.”

For now, fans can reserve their place on the November 2021 cruise, with various early bird discounts available. Double occupancy rooms on The Melissa Etheridge Cruise IV begin at $1,270 per person, plus taxes and fees. Reserve your space now .

And in the meantime those stuck at home can tune in to Etheridge TV , an independent channel built on the Maestro platform. Launched in June 2020, the streaming platform enables the star to offer her fans live content five days a week, an especially timely option.

Melissa Etheridge stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, which led to an appearance on the 1989 Grammy Awards show. For several years, her popularity grew around such memorable originals as "Bring Me Some Water," "No Souvenirs" and "Ain't It Heavy," for which she won a Grammy® in 1992. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes I Am (1993). The collection featured the massive hits, "I'm the Only One" and "Come to My Window," a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second Grammy® Award for Best Female Rock Performance. In 1995, Etheridge issued her highest charting album, Your Little Secret, which was distinguished by the hit single, "I Want to Come Over." Her astounding success that year led to Etheridge receiving the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996.

Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Etheridge has remained one of America's favorite female singer-songwriters for more than two decades. In February 2007, Melissa Etheridge celebrated a career milestone with a victory in the "Best Song" category at the Academy® Awards for "I Need to Wake Up," written for the Al Gore documentary on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth. As a performer and songwriter, Etheridge has shown herself to be an artist who has never allowed "inconvenient truths" to keep her down. Earlier in her recording career, Etheridge acknowledged her sexual orientation when it was considered less than prudent to do so. In October 2004, Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer, a health battle that, with her typical tenacity, she won. Despite losing her hair from chemotherapy, Etheridge appeared on the 2005 Grammy® telecast to sing "Piece of My Heart" in tribute to Janis Joplin. By doing so she gave hope to many women afflicted with the disease.

On October 7, 2016 Melissa Etheridge released Memphis Rock & Soul, her first album since 2014's critically lauded This Is M.E. Recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis, the album received stellar reviews from the likes of Entertainment Weekly, Parade, Rolling Stone, American Songwriter and more. She followed that up with the release of The Medicine Show in April, 2019. For The Medicine Show, Melissa reunited with celebrated producer John Shanks and sounds as rousing as ever, bringing a new level of artistry to her 15th studio recording. The Medicine Show deals with universal themes of renewal, reconciliation, reckoning, compassion and, most profoundly, healing.

Since 2001, Sixthman has set the stage for moments that make life rock, serving more than 250,000 guests on unforgettable vacations at sea with their favorite bands and brands. These carefully curated, intimate events bring non-stop performances, artist collaborations and a truly immersive experience that celebrates community and changes expectations of what a vacation should be.
