Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray have combined for six Grand Slam titles and have met 22 times in their ATP Head2Head series. But on Wednesday, they battled on the intimate clay courts of the ATP Challenger Tour 175 event in Bordeaux, France.

The 38-year-old Wawrinka displayed vintage play from the baseline, firing hefty forehands to earn a commanding 6-3, 6-0 second-round victory against the Scot at the BNP Paribas Primrose.

In the opening set, Wawrinka earned an early break and had five set points at 5-2 in a marathon return game that featured seven deuce points. The Swiss then held his nerve to close the set on his own serve.

The World No. 84 Wawrinka, who has been as high as No. 3, won 22 of 27 first-serve points and forced second-seeded Murray to cover all corners of the court as the Swiss stayed aggressive, often working his way forward to win the one-hour, 15-minute contest. It was a frustrating day for Murray, who was aiming to follow his title run at the Aix-en-Provence Challenger, where he defeated World No. 17 Tommy Paul in the final to claim his first title at any level since 2019.

Wawrinka will next meet Ugo Humbert in the quarter-finals. The 24-year-old Humbert defeated qualifier Gauthier Onclin 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-5. Despite having a match point in the second-set tie-break, Humbert was forced to a decider to close Tuesday's order of play.

In other Bordeaux action, home favourite Richard Gasquet rallied past Thanasi Kokkinakis 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 in a three-hour, four-minute thriller.

In the final set, Gasquet earned a decisive break in dramatic fashion. After Kokkinakis lobbed Gasquet, who was at the net, the Frenchman brought the crowd to its feet by hitting a backhand skyhook winner to seal a break at 5-5, 30/40. The 36-year-old proceeded to close the marathon match and book his ticket to the last eight.

Corentin Moutet’s variety helped lift him past Dominic Thiem 7-6(5), 6-1. The Austrian served for the opening set at 5-4 before Moutet fought back and gave up just two games the remainder of the match. The Frenchman Moutet incorporated underarm serves and troubled Thiem from the baseline by using hefty slice forehands.

Moutet will next face top seed Jan-Lennard Struff, who cruised past qualifier Kyrian Jacquet 6-3, 6-3. Seventh seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry survived wild card Arthur Cazaux 7-6(0), 7-5 and Albert Ramos-Vinolas escaped Adrian Mannarino 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 after three hours, 30 minutes. World No. 52 Mikael Ymer also advanced after defeating #NextGenATP star Luca Van Assche 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Turin The top two seeds, Sebastian Baez and Daniel Elahi Galan, cruised to victories in the second round of the Piemonte Open Intesa Sanpaolo.

Baez downed Italian Riccardo Bonadio 6-4, 6-2 after fending off nine of 10 break points faced and winning 74 per cent of first-serve points. The Argentine, who is World No. 40 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, awaits the winner of Thiago Seyboth Wild and fifth seed Taro Daniel.

World No. 94 Galan also secured a commanding victory Wednesday at the Challenger 175 event, where the Colombian cruised past qualifier Stefano Napolitano 6-2, 6-1 in just 63 minutes.

German Dominik Koepfer upset third seed Juan Pablo Varillas 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 to maintain his strong form at the Challenger level. The 29-year-old has competed in three Challenger finals this year, including his triumph at the Mexico City Challenger in April.

Koepfer will clash against wild card Edoardo Lavagno in the quarter-finals after the Italian moved past countryman and qualifier Salvatore Caruso 6-4, 6-1.

Far from the Grand Slam stages on which both have starred, Stan Wawrinka beat Andy Murray 6-3, 6-0 on Wednesday in what is believed to be the first ATP Challenger Tour matchup between two past major champions in more than 40 years.

Each man has won three Grand Slam titles — Wawrinka at the 2014 Australian Open, 2015 French Open and 2016 U.S. Open; Murray at the 2012 U.S. Open and Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016. Each has needed multiple operations in more recent times — Wawrinka to his left knee and left foot; Murray to his hip, including the insertion of a metal implant. Each is older than 35: Wawrinka is 38; Murray turned 36 on Monday.

Wawrinka once was ranked as high as No. 3 and is currently 84th. Murray once went all the way up at No. 1 and is now 42nd.

Their 22 past career meetings on the ATP’s top level (Murray leads, 13-9) include seven head-to-head showdowns at majors (Wawrinka leads 4-3). That featured matches in the semifinals of the French Open in 2016 (won by Murray) and 2017 (won by Wawrinka).

This latest encounter was also on red clay, but in the second round at a club in Bordeaux, near the coast and about 350 miles (560 kilometers) southwest of Roland Garros — with much smaller stakes and a much smaller audience.

Still, the duo did walk out onto the court to a standing ovation. Wawrinka, wearing a lilac polo shirt and black shorts, went up an early break at 3-1, then held five set points while ahead 5-2 as Murray served. Murray, in a pale orange T-shirt and black shorts, fended off those chances and held for 5-3 — but wouldn’t claim another game.

By the end, Wawrinka had saved the only break point he faced, while winning four of Murray’s seven service games.

Wawrinka and Murray both went to Bordeaux after early losses at the Masters 1000 tournament in Rome last week. The French Open starts in Paris on May 28.

The ATP said this was thought to be the first meeting on the ATP Challenger Tour between two men who had won Grand Slam titles since Ilie Nastase beat Jan Kodes in San Remo, Italy, in 1981.

Challengers are a level below the main ATP tour, mostly filled with players trying to move up. Sometimes, players hoping to work their way back from poor results or time off because of injuries will turn to Challengers to seek rankings points and match action.

Murray, for example, went to the Challenger event in Aix-en-Provence and won his first title at that level since 2005 by beating Australian Open semifinalist Tommy Paul in the final on May 7.

Stan Wins Prague ATP Challenger Tour Title

prague-2020-final-wawrinka-trophy1

In his first tournament back since the resumption of professional tennis, Stan Wawrinka beat Aslan Karatsev 7-6(2), 6-4 to capture the title at the I.CLTK Prague Open by Moneta on Saturday. The former World No. 3 claimed his first title since 2017, when he triumphed on home soil at the ATP Tour stop in Geneva.

« I’m really happy, » said Wawrinka. « It was the best match of the week and the level was good. The focus was there, I was serving well and I’m really happy to get the trophy today. It was nice to come back here and play a Challenger at the Prague Open, especially after so many months away. »

Competing in his first ATP Challenger Tour event in more than 10 years, Wawrinka added a seventh title at that level.

« I feel good, but I know I’m not at my best yet, » Wawrinka added. « But that’s the reason why I came here. I wanted to get some matches. Every match I was playing better, and this was the best of the week. I’m happy to keep going next week. »

At No. 17 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, Wawrinka is the highest-ranked player to win on the ATP Challenger Tour since 14th-ranked Ivan Ljubicic in Zagreb in 2005. He is is one of just eight players inside the Top 20 to win on the Challenger circuit since 2000.

Stan Wawrinka rips Premium Tour idea with blunt one-word reaction

Stan Wawrinka rips Premium Tour idea with blunt one-word reaction

  • Tennis News
  • Tennis Stories

Stan Wawrinka made his feelings perfectly clear on the Premium Tour idea with a simple one-word message as the three-time Grand Slam champion reacted with a "LOL (laugh out loud)" to a Premium Tour-related article.

Over the last couple of months, there has been much talk about the four Grand Slams joining forces with the Saudis and creating an elite tour that would feature 16 top tournaments per year. As currently proposed, the Premium Tour would consist of four Grand Slams - 10 Masters events - the season-ending tournament for men and women, as well as one team competition.

But in that scenario, the ATP and WTA tournaments from the 500 and 250 categories would pretty much be wiped away.

Stan Wawrinka

On Wednesday, Sports Illustrated's Jon Wertheim published an interview conducted with USTA CEO Lew Sherr, where they discussed the motives behind the Premium Tour and their goals.

In the interview, Sherr pretty much highlighted that tennis "dilutes its own product" and that having many tournaments has been detrimental to its product. Instead, having a tour that would see a limited number of tournaments with all top players competing in them at the same time would drastically improve the quality and instantly makes tennis easier to sell as a product.

But Wawrinka isn't impressed.

lol — Stanislas Wawrinka (@stanwawrinka) March 21, 2024

Wawrinka not a fan of the Premium Tour idea

In an interview with Sports Illustrated , Sherr stated that "just too many tournaments are not viable."

"So you're the fourth most popular sport in the world, but 70% of those fans are only watching the four events during the year. And the feedback also indicated that events during the season lack consequence," USTA CEO Sherr said.

"Fans have a hard time following the narrative. We dilute our own product. We compete with our own product. You might have six events in a given week. Fans struggle to know where they should be watching. Why is Sinner playing in Rotterdam and Alcaraz is somewhere in South America?

"The solution that came back from all of that fan research? The best way to present the sport to fans was in a format where the best players are playing in a prescribed sort of elite season. At the same time, you're accounting for player health, rest, peaks in performance."

This month, it was also reported that there is a possibility of creating the "PIF Tour" - one that would see the ATP and WTA merge and be directly tied to Saudi Arabia. It remains to be seen whether it will be the Premium Tour or the PIF Tour that will see the daylight.

Stan Wawrinka calls out Indian Wells tournament director Tommy Haas over practice ball gripe

Stan Wawrinka

  • James Richardson
  • March 2, 2024

Stan Wawrinka recently expressed his displeasure with the practice balls available to professionals in advance of the 2024 Indian Wells Masters, which takes place next week.

The 38-year-old hasn’t had the best start to the season after losing three of his first four ATP Tour matches.

He will next compete in the Indian Wells Masters, the first ATP 1000 level tournament of the season.

Wawrinka was not impressed with the Penn balls he received during a practice session, especially given the Masters status of the Palm Springs event.

The three-time Major champion complained about the balls wearing out after only one rally on his X account.

Wawrinka even tagged the Indian Wells Masters Tournament Director Tommy Haas and the ATP Tour in his post.

“Question: Is not normal that in 2024 at @BNPPARIBASOPEN one of biggest tennis tournaments in the world , we have to do are 2nd practice with old balls ?? @atptour @TommyHaas13 Thats 1 rally play with the ball,” Stan Wawrinka wrote on X.

Wawrinka is not the only player to raise the issue of ball inconsitency with the likes of Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev expressing their dissatisfaction.

Last year, Wawrinka had a good season considering his age. The former World No. 3 had an ATP Tour win/loss record of 27–23, with one of his best finishes coming at the 2023 Croatia Open in Umag as the runner-up against World No 38 Alexei Popyrin.

The three-time Major champion was a regular presence in the elite ATP Tour ranks until an early 2021 foot injury.

The 38-year-old was sidelined for a year after undergoing two operations to address the problem, which caused his singles ranking to drop far outside the top 200.

Injury disrupted his preparations for the 2024 season but Wawrinka has been determined to soldier on.

“I didn’t do the work I wanted in the offseason because I got injured in the last tournament,” he said in Melbourne.

In Australia, Wawrinka insisted that he still doesn’t have any plans to retire.

“Hopefully not. Hopefully not. I will see how the year goes. It’s just the beginning of the year,” Wawrinka said after he was knocked out of the Australian Open and was asked if it might be his last visit to Melbourne.

“In general, I’m quite positive with where I am right now. Even after the loss, I think there is some good opportunity for me to keep pushing, keep playing some good result, and hopefully I can come back next year.”

"Why does no one say, 'You are crazy?'" - Stan Wawrinka lashes out at Grand Slams over new Premium Tour proposal

S tan Wawrinka recently took umbrage at the Grand Slam tournaments angling for a new 'Premium Tour', which will see all four Majors merge with the other big events that are held on the ATP Tour annually.

The Swiss recently spoke to L'Equipe, France's leading sports magazine, about tennis officials looking to reform the game. As it is right now, tennis is difficult to follow for a casual fan, leaving a lot to be desired in terms of revenue.

While the four Majors are justified in their efforts to make the sport more marketable as a product, Wawrinka believes that their actions would hurt lower-tier events.

"Their proposals are to have even more power, to make the ATP and the WTA disappear, to keep the Masters 1000, and to kill the 500 and the 250," Stan Wawrinka told L'Equipe. "But why does no one say: 'You are crazy?' Nothing in this project is good for anyone except them."

The 38-year-old stated that the Grand Slams are solely focused on financial gains, suggesting that they do not prioritize the best interests of the sport.

"The Grand Slams have zero transparency on their accounts," Wawrinka said. "They do not work for the vision of the future of tennis, have no desire to work in the direction of the players and the youngest, to cut part of their cake."

Stan Wawrinka has won one match on the ATP Tour in 2024

Stan Wawrinka is currently in dire need of some form. The three-time Major winner has only won one of his four tour outings this year, which came in the first round of the 2024 Argentina Open against home favorite Pedro Cachin last month.

In his other three matches, the Swiss was edged out by higher-ranked opponents like Adrian Mannarino , Nicolas Jarry and Tomas Machac. Wawrinka, however, can take pride in his resurgence since a foot injury derailed his 2021 and 2022 ATP Tour season.

Stan Wawrinka began last year ranked well outside the men's top 100. He hit a rich vein of form in Indian Wells though, beating World No. 8 Holger Rune in three sets en route to the fourth round, where he lost to Jannik Sinner .

Since then, the former World No. 3 has only gone from strength to strength. The 38-year-old reached his first ATP final in nearly four years at Umag last July, where he dropped a close three-setter to big-hitting Alexei Popyrin. He will be eager to give a good account of himself at the Miami Masters next week.

The 2024 Bucharest Open is a new addition to the calendar, and the ATP 250 tournament has already released its entry list .

Running from April 15th to 21st, 2024, the Bucharest Open, also called the Tiriac Open, has a spot next to other tournaments during the clay-court swing leading up to the Roland Garros.

In 2024, the tournament will be held for the first time as a Tour-level event, and the tournament managed to attract a solid field of players, even though there will be no one from the Top 10 competing at the tournament.

The highest-ranked player on the initial entry is Adrian Mannarino from France. Francisco Cerundolo will play at the tournament as well, with Tallon Griekspoor appearing among potentially seeded players, too.

Sebastian Korda will try to prove that he's one of the most talented American players on the ATP Tour, also signing up for the clay-court tournament in Romania.

“They do not work for the vision of tennis,” ATP veteran Stan Wawrinka brutally critics Grand Slam tournaments with three major titles to his name

The Swiss tennis star is not happy with the upcoming Premium Tour project.

Swiss tennis star Stan Wawrinka who has won three Grand Slam titles in his career so far has raised his objections against the principle the four major tournaments operate on. Wawrinka has claimed that these major tournaments are eyeing to take over the tennis ecosystem and also says that they don’t work for the vision of tennis.

The 38-year-old who had an early exit from the 2024 Indian Wells has talked about the four Grand Slam tournaments trying to build a premium tour. Wawrinka has claimed that if it happens, the ATP 250 and ATP 500 tournaments will eventually die, affecting the lower-ranked players.

Notably, Australian Open director Craig Tiley has proposed a Premium Tour which would see “somewhere between 11 and 14 combined events join the grand slams in a new circuit”. The players have also been briefed about it already and as per reports , the progress is positive.

A Premium Tour will mean that “high-profile events such as Indian Wells, Cincinnati, and Rome would ‘step up’ to the Premium Tour, while their “less prestigious cousins would effectively be downgraded onto a so-called Development Tour.”

Stan Wawrinka not happy with what’s brewing

Amid these developments, Stan Wawrinka has raised his objections. The 38-year-old has claimed that the Grand Slam tournaments are not working for the vision of tennis. Wawrinka is not happy with whatever is brewing among the authorities.

Stan Wawrinka and Craig Tiley

The three-time Grand Slam champion has alleged that they are trying to kill the tournaments that offer lesser ranking points.

The Grand Slams have zero transparency on their accounts. They do not work for the vision of the future of tennis, have no desire to work in the direction of the players and the youngest, to cut part of their cake. Their proposals are to have even more power, to make the ATP and the WTA disappear, to keep the Masters 1000, and to kill the 500 and the 250. Stan Wawrinka said to L’Equipe .

It is worth mentioning that the Premium Tour project is under discussion. While the ATP is hesitant to go that way, the WTA is all-in for the project considering the fact that it would significantly boost their revenue and also their promise to provide equal pay to women’s tennis players will be fulfilled.
