Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS Review

Range-topping spec

Before the Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS arrived, I didn’t know which trim level it was. I assumed a more midrange, journeyman spec, but when the 9.9 arrived, I was floored at the spec. XX1 AXS wireless shifting, top-range components and a beautiful Carbon Red Smoke/Trek Black Project One color fade. Calling this bike a “looker” doesn’t do it justice. No, it’s a no-holds-barred head-turner and it’s built to ride fast.

Two years ago, I rode and loved the Trek Supercaliber 9.8 and it still holds every climbing PR I ride. With the Top Fuel 9.9 coming in three pounds heavier and a more all-mountain vibe, the Trek marketing team said “you just might get some descending PR’s to go along with the climbing ones on the Supercaliber!” Well… I would definitely have to give it a good shot.

Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS - ABP Suspension

I’m a fan of SRAM AXS for road and gravel and did enjoy testing the GX Eagle AXS Upgrade Kit last year, but is electronic shifting all it’s cracked up to be for mountain bikes? There’s something to be said for the crisp, mechanical shifting you can get on SRAM XX1 Eagle, but pushing a button and getting instant shifts without all the wires is a slam dunk. Of course, the RockShox Reverb AXS dropper makes sense with wireless shifting, so I’m glad to have both. Icing on top is the complete suspension gamut of the RockShox SID Ultimate and Deluxe Ultimate RCT. But, let’s not forget the Bontrager Line Pro 30 carbon wheels and the RSL Integrated Bar/Stem while we’re at it. Those two items put the exclamation point on the entire package.

Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS - RSL Bar/Stem

The Line Pro 30 wheels offer 29mm internal width for proper tire support and are honestly a little heavier than a set of pure XC Wheels at 1760 grams, but that’s a sacrifice I’ll take. After having ridden and damaged the lighter Fulcrum Red Zone 3’s , I appreciate the durability and confidence of Bontrager’s Carbon Care lifetime warranty. I ride low pressures (22/24 psi.) and have sustained some impacts, but the Line Pro 30’s don’t know the wiser.

As mentioned, the full bike comes in just under 27 lbs., which isn’t the lightest 120mm bike, but still a pound lighter than the Santa Cruz Tallboy CC 4 X01 . For comparison, the Cannondale Scalpel SE LTD is just a touch lighter and the Specialized S-Works Epic EVO is over 4 lbs. lighter than the Top Fuel. It’s a competitive space out there, but I’d say the Top Fuel certainly isn’t bogged down by its weight.

Trek Store Fit Profile System

Setup, fit and more

On paper, I felt like the large should be my jam and I was set on that. As availability of M/L’s became more of a reality, I swung down to the local Trek Bicycle American Fork store to check one out. I was fresh off a morning road ride, and still in my kit when my new friend Grant swooped in to the rescue. He walked me over to Trek’s in-store, electronic sizing system to determine my measurements and sizing. As it turns out, I’m actually a M/L in Trek mountain bikes. Problem solved. Technology for the win!

Bontrager RSL Integrated MTB Bar/Stem

With successive generations of bike models, the trend is always to make the bike longer, lower and slacker. That recipe was applied to the 2022 Top Fuel. Frames now offer 10mm more reach, a 66-degree head angle (1.5 degrees slacker), 70-degree seat tube angle (2-degrees steeper) and ~40mm longer wheelbase throughout the lineup. Those changes are not minimal and comfortably take the Top Fuel into trail bike territory. As I discovered, with the Mino Link in low mode and grabby XR4 tires, there’s little that the Top Fuel can’t handle. Then, in high mode, with faster tires, the Top Fuel can double as an XC ripper while still rocking any downhill.

Bontrager Arvada 138mm Saddle

Initially, the Bontrager RSL Integrated handlebar/stem seemed short to me (it still kinda does), but the modest 27.5mm rise and ultra-wide 820mm width delivers a confident feel with added comfort. Effectively, it’s a 45mm stem length and I wished for just a little more reach, but that’s as much reach as you can get with this cockpit. The Bontrager Arvada 138mm saddle has been delightful throughout my testing with zero discomfort. I did swap out the grips for a set of Ergon GE1 Evo’s , but everything else remained stock — until I changed the tires out for a set of XR3’s near the end of my test miles.

As a friendly PSA , be sure to check your rebound settings before heading out for the first time. Typically, bikes arrive with rebound in the middle. I didn’t think much of it and after the RockShox SID Ultimate was found to be in the middle, I assumed the SID Luxe was set up the same. But… I was wrong. After a head-scratching ride with disappointing suspension performance, I checked the rebound and found it to be all the way in (slowest setting). Doh! That explained everything I was experiencing. I then put it one click in from the middle setting and have enjoyed the plush and responsive suspension feel I assumed I would get.

To dial in the suspension, I used Trek’s awesome suspension calculator , which suggested 93 psi. front and 170 psi. rear. I went with 85 psi. up front and 170 psi in the rear for my 173 lb. rider weight. To me, that feels great.

Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS Review - Rolling Fast

You can take the low mode, but I’ll take the high mode

As mentioned, the reversible Mino Links can change the characteristics of the Top Fuel. Yes, it’s noticeable and yes, it’s worth testing out on the terrain you typically ride. My rides consist of twisty and fast singletrack with interspersed rock gardens or other obstacles. At this stage, I’m not taking huge drops, nor am I charging full-steam into World Cup downhill courses. I ride fast on the downhill and love nothing more than flying down sinuous singletrack with bermed-out corners. But, the real truth is, I love to climb. Nothing is more rewarding to me than spanking an intense, long effort completely out of breath. And, as it turns out, the Top Fuel accommodates both desires quite well.

I’ll start with performance in the default, low setting. This is how the bike arrives and makes good use of the meaty Bontrager XR4 Team Issue tires. I spent about half of the 200 test miles in this setting and all the downcountry hype is real. Atop any descent, I felt confident rolling over and through just about anything. Not quite as plush as the Santa Cruz Tallboy, but it holds a line well and dances around or through obstacles as needed. You’ll still want to pick your lines, but rest assured that this playful descender can handle it.

Climbing in low mode, you’ll find that it’s certainly capable and able to ascend anything. Handling remains straight and it does well enough for most riders. But, as you’ll see below, high mode is preferred for extensive climbing.

Mino Link Swapped to High Mode

It took me a whole 5 minutes to change to high mode. With slightly-steeper head and seat tube angles, it doesn’t feel twitchy at all. And, in fact, a 66.4-degree head angle is still among the most slack bikes in the 120mm travel bike category. It didn’t take long to realize that the high setting suits my riding style and terrain best. I’m climbing faster while actually descending faster at the same time. My guess is the faster handling is allowing me to take tighter lines on descents while being more efficient on the climbs.

Here are a couple of Strava segments showing just how well the Top Fuel performs for me in high settings. The first one is dominated by the Supercaliber, but the Top Fuel is the next fastest.

Insert Saddle Into Colon Strava PR's

Everything feels balanced and capable on even the steepest climbs. I can pick my lines and the front end doesn’t wander even a little. I can sit on the nose of the Arvada and just power on up anything. When it comes to switchback climbs, the Top Fuel maintains momentum and swoops around corners at speed. Engagement with the Bontrager Line Pro 30’s is fast and responsive. I’ve got nothing but good things to say about the durability, comfort and speed of these wheels. Tubeless setup is a dream too.

To further capitalize on the high shock setting, I also swapped out the knobby XR4’s for a set of 2.4″ Bontrager XR3’s. If your idea of a good time is busting your lungs on endless climbs, I 100% recommend going in the high setting and getting faster treads. I’ve been analyzing my best times in each setting and while there is a clear winner on long climbs (high setting), it’s about even on the descents. With that, I have no reason to switch back — low mode is dead to me.

Trek Top Fuel 9.8 XX1 AXS Review

Playing with the terrain on descents, it’s apparent just how balanced and responsive the ABP Suspension is. There is a solid pedaling platform with a smooth progression throughout the travel. And, for my purposes, it feels bottomless on drops and then compresses and rebounds with an uncanny ability to propel me forward. Air time is natural and fun and manuals are easy to do. I really enjoy how much pop the balanced suspension provides — especially compared to the myriad of virtual pivot designs on the market.

Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS - Climbing

On long rides, I did wish I could carry a larger bottle. The largest one I could fit was the Elite Fly 750ml bottle , which is great for rides up to 2 hours. Two bottles or at least room enough for an even larger one would be nice for a bike like the Top Fuel.

Performance of the SRAM XX1 AXS drivetrain has remained outstanding. I’m sold on electronic shifting on the road and gravel and do love it for mountain biking. But, as nice as it is, I’m just fine with mechanical shifting. But, the clean routing and the responsiveness of the RockShox Reverb AXS makes wireless a clear winner if you have the available funds. I really love the overall lack of handlebar clutter.

Trek Top Fuel Frame Storage

The RockShox SID Ultimate is an astounding fork. I haven’t noticed any lateral flex and the smooth travel makes quick work of rough terrain. No, it’s not as smooth as a PIKE, but it pairs perfectly with this bike. While I did fiddle with lockouts and stuff with the Supercaliber, I’ve just left everything open all the time on the Top Fuel. It has enough of a pedaling platform that I didn’t worry about any loss of power and it’s nice not to worry about switches or levers. Simplicity is always the best form of sophistication, right? Just air it up and ride.

  • Full SRAM AXS wireless shifting looks clean and is instantaneous
  • RockShox Reverb AXS is the pinnacle of responsive droppers
  • Fuss-free suspension setup and performance
  • RockShox SID is ultralight, stiff and responsive
  • Downtube storage is a nice touch
  • Mino Links allow for two different bike flavors
  • Water bottle location is easily-reached and shielded from debris
  • RSL Integrated handlebar/stem offers awesome handling and bike feel
  • In low mode, it descends like a champ
  • In high mode, it climbs really well (and still descends confidently)
  • Blendr mount needed to install a bike computer
  • Wished the “stem” was 55mm long for a little more reach
  • XR4 tires are a little slow for my tastes (I preferred the XR3’s)
  • XX1 AXS shifter can sometimes feel less intuitive than mechanical
  • Can only fit one, regular-sized water bottle

The Bottom Line: Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS

The 2022 Top Fuel is a capable all-rounder that handles rugged terrain while also being an ultra-efficient climber. It’s been interesting having the Top Fuel in the garage for so long now. Every time I swing a leg over it, I think I’ll just take it easy today and not push myself. But, all it takes is one pedal stroke and the game is afoot. I just can’t help myself from pushing the limits on every ride. Note that the 2023 models are arriving now and may feature minor spec changes.

What more can I say, other than this bike is an absolute blast. There are more efficient XC race bikes and there are more capable all-mountain bikes, but the latest Top Fuel confidently fills that gap. Of course, I'd like something a little lighter, but there's no shaking a stick at how well this bike climbs and then how fun it is to snake in/out of every turn on a long descent. (Note: The XX1 AXS model tested here is an example of the ultimate build, but you don't have to spend nearly that much to get almost the same performance.)

Very complete review. I’ve had several FS XC rigs over the years…and have they evolved. My 2023 is schedule to ship by mid October 2022. Stoked. Got the 9.9 AXS….will for sure run in high for all the proper reasons [style, terrain, etc]….likely to run a 2.2 ish tire more near the 630g range as well. Let the road trip planning commence.

You’ll love it. Such a fun downcountry rig. Testing it head-to-head against the Canyon Lux Trail and the Top Fuel is much more comfortable and capable on technical/flowy terrain.

Awesome! Again great/complete review.

Do you think this bike is marathon racing worth or did it shift a tad too far (and heavy) to the trail realm?! (Lighter tires would certainly help)

In high mode with fast-rolling tires, this one would be great. There are faster climbers, but overall, it still tends to beat out other bikes (like the Canyon Lux Trail) when considering both uphill and downhill routes.

Nice- thanks for the reply! look forward to a comparison on the lux trail vs. top fuel- both bikes i’ve considered!

Clifford, I am very curious to see how you like your 2023 with the pike 130 mm fork. On the website the only thing available are 2022 models and I am considering swapping the 120 mm Sid for a 130 mm pike.

Michael… I don’t have the 2023 model, but it is interesting that they are going with a 130mm fork on it now. Definitely makes me wonder when a new Supercaliber might be coming. That will definitely make it more inline with the other downcountry bikes on the market — Yeti SB120, Santa Cruz Tallboy, Ibis Ripley, etc.

Fantastic review. I have 2 questions. You did fit a size M/L better than a size L. How tall are you.? Have you tried the new Yeti SB 120? Regards Jens

I’m hopeful to get on the new SB20 next year. I’m 5’11” (180cm) and have a 31″ inseam.

Hi! On this review, did you have the back shock full open or in the middle trail mode? Thanks! Adam Sanchez

I kept it on trail mode and found it to be just right for everything. I may have opened it up a time or two on long descents is all.

MBUK’s Trail Bike of the Year 2022

“It’s easy to look at the bike from afar and assume this is just another downcountry rig... It wasn’t until I’d fired it over some jumps, nosed it down the odd steep chute and slung it through my test loops’ berms that I realised the Top Fuel is, simply put, a bloody brilliant trail bike.”

"Enduro’s Best Downcountry Bike of 2022"

"Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS earned top honors in Enduro’s round-up of best downcountry rippers, thanks to the bike’s clean look, practical details, and progressive suspension."

"This is a really, really good bike"

"The Top Fuel is a very capable descender, but its well-proportioned geometry is just half the story. It manages to strike a great balance between grip, tracking, and precision. The whole bike seems to just will you on to hit things faster and with more precision."

"This thing rips"

"The new Top Fuel is also much more composed on rough and fast descents. Thanks to the longer reach and slacker head angle, the overall wheelbase length has grown by almost 40mm. That’s huge, and it offers a vastly more planted feel at speed. Along with the big tyres and active suspension, this really is a solid little trail bike."

When it comes to being a better trail rider, practice makes perfect. Get seven tips from Pinkbike’s Christina Chappetta that will have you setting PR's and riding with more confidence in no time.

How to pack for any trail ride

Everything you need (and nothing you don’t).

Product features

Quick and in control.

120mm of rear travel combined with progressive trail geometry gives you a fast, responsive ride that helps you keep your cool when the trail turns rowdy.

Hassle-free routing

Guided internal cable routing keeps Top Fuel quiet on the trail and maintenance a breeze.

Will my bike have a curved top tube?

Smaller frames (XS and S) have a curved top tube. This design makes for a lower standover height, which allows shorter riders to straddle the bike more easily. Larger frames (M and up) have a straight top tube because taller riders with longer legs typically don't have the same issues with standover height.

Complete Tubeless System

Tubeless Ready rims and tires make it easy to ditch the tubes so you get better traction, fewer flats, and less weight. You're ready to roll right out of the box with the included TLR rim strips, valves, and sealant.

Suspension Calculator

This suspension calculator will help you optimize your suspension settings for your riding weight. Simply follow the steps to find your best set up.

Carbon Care Wheel Loyalty Program

Every set of Bontrager carbon wheels is backed by the Carbon Care Wheel Loyalty Program. In the unlikely event that you damage your Bontrager carbon wheels within the first two years of ownership, we’ll repair or replace them for free.

Oversized 34.9mm dropper post

Bigger is better. The oversized seat tube diameter gives more support and strength for longer travel droppers, and allows for more robust, durable internals that work faster.

Threaded bottom bracket

More robust than pressfit, threaded BBs hold up in nasty conditions and make servicing easier.

ISCG mounts

International Standard Chain Guide mounts offer easy chain guide installation and adjustment.

Knock Block

Knock Block has your frame's back when things go wrong. It prevents your handlebars from spinning all the way around in a crash, so your hoses won't get yanked, and your controls won't hit the top tube.

Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS Bike Review

Words by Spencer Astra | Photos by Chris Grundberg

After reviewing a slew of big bikes this summer—each seemingly heftier and slower uphill than the last—it was refreshing to hop on the Trek Top Fuel, a spry 5-inch bike, and start enjoying climbs again.

The Trek Top Fuel is a bike with cross-country origins now redesigned to cater to a more aggressive subset of riders. The revamped geometry makes for a longer package overall with a 480-millimeter reach in the low setting on a size large and a 435-millimeter chainstay. This new length, paired with a slightly slacker 66-degree headtube angle, gives the Top Fuel a surprisingly capable feeling at speed, even down steeper trails that the traditional cross-country bikes of yesteryear would balk at.

The Top Fuel is an outright rocket ship on the climbs. With 120 millimeters of rear travel, the Fuel retains its pedaling efficiency while seated or hammering out of the saddle—not once did I notice any pedal bob. The updated geometry also helps during steep climbs as the 76-degree seat tube angle pushes your center of mass forward while the long reach provides plenty of real estate. The Top Fuel feels like a new age enduro bike on a weight loss program.

Geometry & Specs:

Wheel Size: 29" Rear Travel: 120mm Fork: 120mm Wheelbase: 1215mm Chainstay: 435mm Reach: 480mm Head Tube Angle: 66°

trek top fuel 9.9 axs 2021

I had, dare I say it, fun, climbing aboard the Top Fuel, which is why I was shocked to find this Trek to be even more exciting on descents. I noticed that I felt fresher when transitioning from going up to heading down, a nod to the very real energy savings the Top Fuel offers in comparison to heavier enduro bikes. Riding in full downhill attack mode felt comfortable right away and the longer wheelbase adds a ride quality more commonly found on bikes with way more travel. I assumed the 66-degree headtube angle would feel a bit twitchy at high speeds, but pushing my limit came naturally on each ride. During my time with the Top Fuel, I rode black trails as well as double blacks and steep trails with drops and other technical features. And, while I knew I wasn’t on a full on enduro rig, I was still able to ride hard and enjoy myself. What you lose in terms of minimal suspension, you make up for with agility. The RockShox Deluxe Ultimate RCT shock dove deep into its travel and swallowed big compressions but ramped up fast enough so that I never once felt the harsh clank of a bottom out. Even the little RockShox SID fork punched way above its weight class. It should be noted that, for the purpose of this review, we received the top-tier 9.9 XX1 AXS build ($11,050), but Trek offers both carbon and aluminum Top Fuel models with the most wallet-friendly option coming in at a sensible $2,630.

The Top Fuel is a case study in what’s possible for a bike that’s light on overall travel, but heavy on modern geometry and suspension technology. Enduro rigs keep getting chunkier and slower uphill and this polychromatic, peppy Trek seems to have arrived to show us just how capable a featherweight package can be. While I think the average beginner rider would be happier on a more forgiving, longer travel bike, experienced riders seeking a next-level degree of efficiency and precision should take a serious look at the Top Fuel line.

From Cross Country to Trail Bike

While the 2019 Top Fuel featured 100mm of travel in the front and back, the new Top Fuel now has 120mm of front suspension and 115mm of rear suspension. They’ve also done away with the floating mount that compressed the shock from both ends. Instead, the lower eyelet is fixed to the downtube, a change that reduces weight and improves stiffness.

Tires are also trending wider across the industry, and the same proves true here. Instead of light and skinny race tires, the new model comes with 29x2.40-inch Bontrager XR3 Team Issue tires designed for a variety of riding conditions. The new Top Fuel 9.9 also has armor to protect the downtube against rock strikes and Trek's Knock Block headset which prevents the bars and fork from twisting backward and damaging the frame.

Trek Top Fuel

As for geometry, the new model is slacker and longer than the last, and it has a shorter stem and wider bars than the previous generation. One of the most notable changes, however, is the updated front suspension offset. Trek was arguably the first to get behind an increased offset—specifically 51mm—for their 29ers.

Other brands eventually followed and soon most 29ers were using 51mm offset forks. But the current trend of longer front centers and slacker head angles has reversed this tide, and the offsets are shrinking. Even Trek couldn't fight the reduced-offset trend: the new Top Fuel uses a 44mm offset fork.

Text, Font, Line, Pattern,

All the Bells and Whistles

As a top-of-the-line 9.9 model, our review bike comes with everything you’d ever want on an endurance bike and then some. Last year’s Top Fuel family didn’t feature a single dropper post, but now, every model comes with one. The small starts with a 100mm dropper and from there dropper sizes run all the way up to 170mm on the largest sizes.

The left handlebar grip features a TwistLoc remote that lets you lock out both front and rear suspension with one simple twist. Unlocking it is even easier, you just push a small button with your thumb. I was warned about it prior to riding, to prevent me from accidentally triggering it, but I didn’t find that to be a problem at all. Maybe it’s my small hands, but I think you really have to activate it intentionally. However, near the end of the review period the fork's lockout mechanism began to stick and sometimes wouldn't open.

Trek Top Fuel

The bike also comes with Trek’s Mino Link, which is located on the front of the rocker, making it easier to access and change than on previous versions. In the high position, the 9.9 has a quicker-steering vibe. If you want a more stable feel, flipping it to the low position will drop the bottom bracket 8mm, and relax the head angle from 68 to 67.5 degrees.

Right now the Top Fuel 9.9 comes in two color options: All black matte (for those minimalists) or an eye-catching black and teal hybrid with neon green lettering seen here. If you’re thinking of getting the Top Fuel and really want to go all out then you might want to wait until July 25, when the new Top Fuel joins Trek's ProjectOne customizable paint and build program.

You get all of these features, and the bike still only weighs 24 pounds (size small). The only thing the Top Fuel 9.9 doesn’t come with is electronic shifting. For that you’ll want the $10,000 Top Fuel 9.9 AXS with SRAM's Eagle AXS wireless group .

Frame: Carbon Wheel Size: 29-inch Travel: 115mm Shock: Fox Factory Float Fork: Fox Factory 34 Step-Cast, 120mm Drivetrain: 1x12 Crankset: SRAM XX1 Eagle Carbon, 32t Rear Derailleur: SRAM XX1 Eagle Cassette: SRAM XG-1295 Eagle, 10-50 Brakes: SRAM Level Ultimate hydraulic disc, 180mm front/160mm rear rotors Seatpost: Bontrager Line Elite dropper, 100-170mm travel Rims: Bontrager Kovee Pro 30 carbon, tubeless ready Tires: Bontrager XR3 Team Issue 2.4 in., tubeless ready Sizes: S, M, M/L, L, XL

The Top Fuel Family

If this $9,000 9.9 falls outside of your budget, there are three other bikes in the Top Fuel family that you can get for less.

The family starts with the Top Fuel 8 at $3,300. It’s the only aluminum bike in the line-up, and it weighs almost 30.5 pounds (size medium, claimed). It comes with the same amount of travel, a SRAM NX Eagle drivetrain, and you’ll even get the TwistLoc remote. For $4,000, you can get the Top Fuel 9.7. You’ll get roughly the same set up as the 8 but with a full carbon frame.

Trek Top Fuel

The Top Fuel 9.8 comes in at just over 26 pounds (claimed) for $5,500. You’ll get better components like SRAM GX Eagle, the Bontrager Line Elite Dropper (like the 9.9), and a Fox Performance 34 fork and Bontrager Kovee Elite 30 wheels with carbon rims.

The the 9.9 and the 9.9 AXS get Bontrager Kovee Pro 30 wheels with 108-tooth Rapid Drive hubs, for near-instant engagement. At $10,000, the biggest differences between the 9.9 and the 9.9 AXS are the wireless SRAM Eagle AXS shifters and the wireless RockShox Reverb AXS dropper.

Reshuffling the Trek Full-Suspension Family

Trek has a number of world-class cross country racers on its mountain bike teams. With the Top Fuel no longer a race bike, those riders will need a new XC bike. And it appears one is coming soon. Trek's racers are aboard a new bike with a sock on the top tube covering up a new full suspension design.

Trek Top Fuel

With its new trail orientation, the Top Fuel has serious overlap with Trek's current Fuel EX, a 130/130mm trail bike. We expect that will be rectified with a new version of the Fuel EX that will launch later this year. It will likely have more travel than the current Fuel EX, as well as longer geometry, slacker headtube angle, steeper seat angle, a shorter offset fork, a stiffer frame, and will be built with heartier parts.

How It Rides

I took the new Top Fuel to the trails I'd been riding on my personal Trek Fuel EX 5 — a heavier and longer travel bike than this Top Fuel 9.9. The trails I rode during the initial test ride were flowy, with a few technical spots and long climbs.

The biggest thing I noticed? Climbing wasn't nearly as difficult as it was on my personal bike. I wouldn't call it effortless, but the difference was significant. Riding in the "cross country" setup, with the Mino Link set high and the stem flipped in the downward position, the Top Fuel is a quicker steering and faster feeling trail bike. In this form, the bike truly would be great for endurance races like the Breck Epic and BC Bike race.

In the low mode, the bike feels mellower, but still a fast and agile bike. On paper, it has a lot in common with the Yeti SB100 and Santa Cruz Tallboy, which puts the new Top Fuel in very good company.

Trek Top Fuel

Taking it on some rocky trails, the Top Fuel tackled them just as well. While it might not have as much suspension as other trail bikes, it can just as easily rip down most technical trails. The 29er wheels and wider tires help the bike roll over obstacles with ease, without taking away from the bike's superb climbing ability.

The new Top Fuel might not be a pure XC-race bike anymore, but it's still precise and very fast. Its new trail orientation makes it a great choice for a rider who wants a fast and light bike with most of the the efficiency of a cross-country race bike, but with bit more versatility and playfulness.

Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS – In our 2022 downcountry group test

trek top fuel 9.9 axs 2021

The Trek Top Fuel is a true XC classic – but that’s about to change! The Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS 2022 drifts into the new season with more travel, a more aggressive geometry and robust components. Does this make it the perfect downcountry bike?

For an overview of the test fleet head to the group test: The best downcountry bike of 2022 – 6 models in review

trek top fuel 9.9 axs 2021

Same DNA, same key elements, different focus. For 2022, Trek redesigned the Top Fuel from the ground up, clearly shifting the focus from XC to trail riding and downcountry. The latest incarnation of Trek’s XC-classic retains all the well-proven features of its predecessor and combines them with some exciting new ones. While the € 12,099 Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS still rolls on 29″ wheels, Trek have bumped up the travel of the rear suspension from 115 to 120 mm and paired it with 120 mm at the front. Moreover, Trek have finally gifted their timeless classic with a storage compartment in the down tube, which can be found on many of their gravity-oriented bikes – now you can leave your backpack or hip-pack at home and store all your trail essentials in the small bag under the bottle cage. The new Top Fuel also features Trek’s proprietary Knock Block in the headset, which limits the steering angle and prevents the fork from damaging the frame during a crash. On the trail, the system doesn’t affect the handling in any way. A large TPU plate protects the down tube against stray rocks and a reasonably sized and well-positioned chainstay protector prevents chain slap and paint chips. The few remaining cables are neatly routed inside the frame, ensuring a clean look while the unused cable ports are sealed with rubber plugs.

trek top fuel 9.9 axs 2021

The spec of the Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS

For the spec of the Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS, Trek rely on a mix of components from SRAM and their own component brand Bontrager. Let’s start from the RockShox Ultimate suspension: the SID Ultimate fork features RockShox’s new Charger RaceDay damper with a lockout lever on the top of the right leg, while Trek’s ABP (Active Braking Pivot) rear suspension is controlled by a Deluxe Ultimate shock, also with a lockout lever. Together with the Specialized, the Top Fuel is the only bike in this test without a bar-mounted lockout remote, which, in combination with the wireless AXS components, ensures a super-tidy look. Thanks to its wireless components, the Top Fuel has only two cables: the brake lines of the SRAM G2 Ultimate four-piston brakes – we’re waiting impatiently for some wireless brakes ;). The G2 Ultimate model is the top-of-the-line version of SRAM’s trail-specific stoppers, which deliver the same excellent performance as the RSC model and save a few extra grams thanks to their carbon lever blades and titanium bolts. Trek combine a 180 mm rotor at the front and a smaller 160 mm one at the rear.

trek top fuel 9.9 axs 2021

An electronic SRAM XX1 AXS drivetrain ensures smooth and precise shifting while the UDH mech hanger is easy to find and quick to replace. Even the 150 mm Reverb AXS dropper post doesn’t require a cable, ensuring super-fast and precise operation. That’s a must with downcountry bikes because you’re constantly swapping between climbs and descents. The one-piece Bontrager RSL carbon cockpit also contributes to the clean look of the Top Fuel, with the handlebars and stem joined together in a single carbon piece. That being said, the 820 mm handlebars are extremely wide and the one-piece design doesn’t allow for fine-tuning, except for the stem height that can be changed using spacers. We recommend cutting down the handlebars, although this will result in a stiffer cockpit. Trek also rely on their in-house components for the wheels, pairing Bontrager Line Pro 30 carbon rims with 2.4″ Bontrager XR4 Team Issue tires. The aggressive tread pattern and soft rubber compound ensure excellent traction while rolling resistance is only marginally higher than with a shallow-profiled XC tire and noticeable only on hardpack terrain. That being said, we’d choose more grip over lower rolling resistance all day long! While at 12.2 kg, the Top Fuel is the heaviest bike in the entire test field, it can easily keep up with the competition uphill. This is also made possible by the spec, which at the same time adds to the excellent trail performance of the Top Fuel.

The geometry of the Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS

With five available sizes, S to XL, there should be a suitable Top Fuel for everyone measuring between 153 and 196 cm. Our test bike in the intermediate size M/L has 465 mm reach, 600 mm stack height and a short 435 mm seat tube, which, together with the generous insertion depth, allows you to insert the dropper post all the way into the frame. Not only does this ensure excellent freedom of movement on the bike, but also lets you choose the frame size based on your desired reach. A flip chip in the shock mount allows you to switch between the high and low settings and adapt the geometry of the bike to your needs and preferences. In the high setting, the head and seat tube angle are 0.4° steeper, the chainstays 1 mm shorter and the bottom bracket 5 mm higher. Needless to say, the changes also alter the reach, stack height and wheelbase of the Top Fuel. As usual, we rode the bike mostly in the low setting, which is your best option for trail riding.

The Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS on the trail

Together with the Specialized Epic EVO, the Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS is the only bike in this test without a bar-mounted lockout remote – and actually the only one that doesn’t need one! Already after the first few meters, it becomes clear that the suspension is stiff and, above all, extremely efficient, even in fully open mode. Moreover, the pedalling position is very comfortable, with the weight evenly distributed between the hands and saddle, making the Trek suitable for long rides. Going uphill, the rear suspension generates sufficient traction, even on loose trail sections with slippery roots and with the shock in open mode. While your mates are still fiddling around with the climb switch, you’re already blasting up the side of the mountain onboard the Trek Top Fuel! However, tall and long-legged riders should push the saddle all the way forward to prevent the front wheel from lifting on steep climbs.

The Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS does not need a lockout at all and convinces in both uphill and downhill with a progressive yet traction-strong rear end.

trek top fuel 9.9 axs 2021

Downhill, the ultra-wide handlebars have their pros and cons, on the one hand, inspiring lots of confidence and providing additional stability in fast trail sections, on the other, requiring great precision to squeeze through narrow trees. Like the Specialized, the Trek is intuitive and easy to ride, with the weight evenly distributed between the front and rear wheel. Downhill, the rear suspension generates plenty of traction and provides excellent mid-stroke support while offering sufficient reserves for rowdy trail sessions. Too often we caught ourselves ploughing through nasty root carpets and tall berms at Mach 10, but here the precise and intuitive handling inspires huge amounts of confidence and ensures top riding fun.

Tuning tips: tall and long-legged riders should push the saddle all the way forward | cut off the handlebars or swap the cockpit for a narrower one

Riding Characteristics

Value for money, intended use.

Not only does the Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS 2022 impress with its clean look, clever details and harmonious spec, but also delivers an impressive performance on the trail. The drive-neutral, rear suspension is incredibly efficient and generates plenty of traction, even with the shock in fully open mode. At the same time, the intuitive handling and progressive rear suspension put a huge smile on your face. Whether it’s an agonising lactate battle, quick post-work spin or epic singletrack adventure, the Top Fuel delivers! As a result, the Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS 2022 secures Best in Test in our 2022 downcountry group test.

trek top fuel 9.9 axs 2021

This scale indicates how efficiently the bike climbs. It refers to both simple and technical climbs. Along with the suspension, the riding position and the weight of the bike all play a crucial role. ↩

How does the bike ride and descend? How spritely is the bike, how agile is it through corners, how much fun is it in tight sections and how quickly can it change direction? ↩

Is the bike stable at high speeds? Is it easy to stay in control in demanding terrain? How composed is it on rough trails? Stability is a combination of balanced geometry, good suspension and the right spec. ↩

This is all about how balanced the bike is and particularly about how well it corners. Balanced bikes require little physical effort from the rider and are very predictable. If a bike is unbalanced, the rider has to work hard to weight the front wheel to generate enough grip. However, experienced riders can have a lot of fun even with unbalanced bikes. ↩

How sensitive is the suspension over small bumps? Can it absorb hard impacts and does it soak up repeated hits? Plush suspension not only provides comfort and makes a bike more capable, but it also generates traction. The rating includes the fork and the rear suspension. ↩

This aspect mainly comes down to the suspension. How much pop does it have, does it suck up the rider’s input or is it supportive, and how agile and direct is the bike? ↩

We don’t calculate value for money in an excel spreadsheet or based on how high-end a bike is specced. We are more concerned with how a bike performs on the trail and how the bike benefits the rider. What good are the best components if the bike doesn’t perform well on the trail? Expensive bikes with a lower-end spec can offer very good value for money – provided they excel where it matters. Just as supposedly cheap bikes with good components can get a bad rating if they don’t deliver on the trail. ↩

No, it’s not about racing, it’s about efficiency. Fast, fleet-footed and efficient – those who want to speed along flowy singletrack and gravel roads need a defined and spritely bike that accelerates with ease and efficiency. Nevertheless, reliable components are important too. We interpret XC more like the Americans do: big back-country rides instead of a marathon or XC World Cup with the ultimate in lightweight construction! Uphill-downhill ratio: 80:30 (not everything has to be 100%!) ↩

...also known as mountain biking. Classic singletrack with roots, rocks and ledges – sometimes flowy, sometimes rough. For this, you need a bike with good all-round qualities, whether climbing or descending. Uphill-downhill ratio: 50:50 ↩

Even more extreme and challenging compared to Trail riding, riddled with every kind of obstacle: jumps, gaps, nasty rock gardens, ruts and roots. For this, you need (race)proven equipment that forgives mistakes and wouldn’t look out of place on a stage of the Enduro World Series. Climbing is just a means to an end. Uphill-downhill ratio: 30:70 ↩

Strictly speaking, a 200 mm travel downhill bike is the best choice for merciless tracks with big jumps, drops and the roughest terrain. Those would be the black or double-black-diamond tracks in a bike park. But as some of the EWS pros (including Sam Hill) have proven, it’s the riding skills and not the bike that define what you can ride with it. Climbing? On foot or with a shuttle, please! Uphill-downhill ratio: 10:90 ↩

The idea of creative force and power of Soviet people, its remarkable victories in the Great Patriotic War found realization in architectural design of station. 2. General information about Moscow metro

Metro working hours, navigation, wi-fi.

The Moscow Metro is open from about 5:30 am until 1:00 am. The precise opening time varies at different stations according to the arrival of the first train, but all stations simultaneously close their entrances and transitions to other lines at 01:00 am for maintenance. The minimum interval between trains is 90 seconds during the morning and evening rush hours. Each line is identified according to an alphanumeric index (usually consisting of a number), a name and a color. Voice announcements in Russian refer to the lines by name and by numbers in English. A male voice announces the next station when traveling towards the center of the city or the clockwise direction on the circle line, and a female voice – when going away from the center or the counter-clockwise direction at the circle. The lines are also assigned specific colors for maps and signs.

Free Wi-Fi is called MT_FREE and available on all 14 lines (inside the trains).

Using Metro services is frequently the fastest and the most efficient way to get from one part of the city to another. But during daytime Moscow Metro stations are usually overcrowded so if you want to just enjoy the beauty of the underground, it’s better to visit it late in the evening.

MCC and MCD

Since 2016 The Moscow Metro is connected to two new types of rail transport. The first one is MCC – Moscow Central Circle. It has 31 stations around the city with changes to metro stations (most of them require to walk a few minutes via the street). The second one is MCD, Moscow Central Diameters, a system of city train services on existing commuter rail lines in Moscow and Moscow Oblast. MCD has several lines, they’re being marked as D1, D2 etc. Changing to both MCC and MCD from the Metro is free when your journey is within the city. Both MCC and MCD lines exist on all of the Moscow Metro maps.

Interesting facts about Moscow metro

213 people were born in the metro during the World War II, when it was used as a bomb shelter.

There are 76 bronze sculptures of workers, peasants, soldiers, sailors, etc. at Ploshchad Revolyutsii station. There is legend connected with this station. To pass any examination successfully, a student should touch the bronze dog’s nose («the Frontier Guard with a Dog» sculpture). You can easily understand high popularity of this legend by looking at the polished nose of the dog.

It is said that some of the magnificent mosaics at several central stations, for example the «World Peace» mosaic at Novoslobodskaya, were made with the pieces of enamel and smalt, taken from the famous Christ the Savior Cathedral, before it’s destruction.

As any other dungeon the Moscow metro, has its own ghosts. The most famous one is the old lineman. He is not dangerous and usually hides into the wall, when people appear. The ghostly metro train is much more dangerous. It appears after midnight at the Circle Line and consists of old-time carriages. It sometimes stops at the stations and opens its doors, and then goes back into the darkness. It is said that the souls of Stalin’s prisoners, perished during the building of the metro are locked in the train forever.

3. Moscow Metro tickets

1 or 2 trips.

You can buy tickets in ticket offices or in automatic ticket machines. Passes for 1 or 2 trips are the most expensive. They sold only in ATM and cost 55 and 110 rubles (€0.55 and €1.10) respectively.

More than 2 trips

All the other kinds of tickets are available in the ticket offices. Tickets for bigger amount of trips are more profitable.

«90 Minutes» ticket

A ticket «90 minutes» is valid for one trip on the metro and an unlimited number of trips on surface transport within this time. It costs 65 rub (€0.65).

The «Troyka» card

You can also use «Troyka» – refillable card to pay for travelling on all kinds of public transport – metro, buses, trolley-buses, trams, monorail and blue minibuses. With «Troyka» one trip costs 35 rub (€0.35).

Moscow Urban Area Population Graph

Moscow population review.

Moscow is the capital of Russia and the northernmost major city in the world. With 12.5 million people in the urban area, it is also the second most populated city in all of Europe , topped only by Istanbul in Turkey. Beginning in the fourteenth century, the city of Moscow grew around the Moscow Kremlin—the fortified complex in the city center. The city straddles both sides of the Moskva River and has a rich and storied history.

The true population of Moscow is a hotly debated topic; with experts claiming the true number of people living in the city could be as high at 17 million. This is due to the city’s high rates of illegal immigration and the veracity of Russia’s official figures leaving something to be desired.

Death rate outstripping birth rate

While Moscow continues to grow at impressive (though contended) rates, the city’s death rate has actually been higher than birth rate for years now. Without legal and illegal migration into the city, Moscow’s population would have been decreasing for years. Instead, it grew 10.9% from 2002 to 2010, and experts predict it will reach almost 13 million by 2035.

Third busiest metro in the world

Moscow has always been a large city, but in 2012 it doubled in size. The city’s territorial expansion southwest into Moscow Oblast took the Russian capital from 1,000-square kilometers, to 2,511-square kilometers (and also added another 233,000 people to its population). All this room to travel means Muscovite’s need a reliable way to get around. The Moscow metro system is the third busiest in the world and serves more passengers on a daily basis than any other metro system on Earth. In fact, on weekdays the Moscow metro system shuttles up to 6-million people around the city. At peak times, the wait between trains is only 1.5 minutes before another flood of people are embarking and disembarking.

A homogenous population

Out of Moscow’s 12.5 million confirmed residents, only about 10 million have listed ethnicity. But even with those spotty numbers, Moscow is a mostly homogenous city with 91% (or about 9.9 million) of the population identifying as Russian. The second largest demographic is Ukrainian, but that is only a paltry 1.4% of the population. This is the section of the population that holds permanent residency and does not take into account the 1.8 million official “guests” that have visas, or the number of illegal immigrants, the majority of which are from Central Asia .

A record-setting city for tourism

Every year, Moscow breaks its old tourism records. The capital city’s rich history, culture and hospitality continue to draw huge crowds from other cities and countries. In 2015, the city saw 17.2 million tourists visit, and the next year saw 17.5 million. In 2017, there were 21.6 million tourists, which included five million foreigners. In 2018, the city hosted the 2018 FIFA World Cup and this boosted the tourism industry far beyond anything the city had ever seen. Tourism increased by 10% that year, going up to 22.9 million visitors and during the World Cup alone, there were 2.3 million foreigners visiting the city.

The heart of Eastern Orthodox Christianity

While Russia a multi-faith nation, the vast majority of the population practice Orthodox Christianity (75%). Moscow is the capital of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, which has long been a part of the country’s history and is considered the country’s traditional religion. So much so that it was deemed a part of Russian’s historical heritage in 1997. Islam is another religion that many Muscovites follow. Muslims constitute around 1.5 million people in Moscow, about 14% of the population, and there are four mosques in the city.
