Park your cynicism! Michael McIntyre is a super-relatable well-oiled joke machine
The everyman standup delivers substantial comic payloads by itemising the oddity of human behaviour. A successful formula his new tour continues to exploit
A ll the countries of the world have their own bread, runs one of Michael McIntyre’s routines in his new show Macnificent. But what does Britain have? The boring old loaf. And all the countries have their own cheese too, runs the follow-up. And which one is ours? Mild cheddar. That’s we Brits, according to our host: aren’t we all just so lovably, incorrigibly bland?
Well, speak for yourself, you may wish to respond: there are traffic islands that have spent less time than McIntyre in the middle of the road. But resistance is futile – or at least, self-defeating. You can sit there thinking of all the strong cheeses and characterful breads Britain produces, or you can be seduced by McIntyre’s entertaining generalisations (OK, maybe we are bland!) into having as much fun as many, many other people in his audience. Don’t overthink things. Park your cynicism. There’s fun to be had here.
And there has been for a remarkably long time. The 47-year-old screens a montage at the start of his show, of significant gigs since he first stepped on to the Comedy Store stage 24 years ago. It reminded me: this guy has been huge for ages. (He barely seems to have aged either, damn him.) This is a comic who struck, fairly early, on a formula that would yield colossal commercial success, and who has stuck with it since. Reader, let me reassure – or disappoint – you: that formula changes not one jot with Macnificent, McIntyre’s first standup tour since 2018 .
It includes, as ever, fantastic jokes and routines on almost parodically relatable subjects. You want 10 tight minutes on middle-aged wine-drinking? McIntyre is your man. Interested in a riff on yawning? McIntyre is here for you, itemising the oddity of this universal human behaviour, the comedy of failing to suppress it when in conversation, the incongruity of its seeming contagiousness. (“How do you catch tiredness?!”) Not for the first time, you marvel that such an ostensibly banal observation can feel so fresh, and deliver – in McIntyre’s expert hands – such a substantial comic payload.
But it does, as does a fine nugget of physical comedy about McIntyre and wife in the marital bed, regretting the purchase of a mattress that’s firm on one half and soft on the other. And a delightful routine about youth football, casting our host as a concerned dad on the sidelines while his angelic son is aggressed by overdeveloped 15-year-olds with abundant facial hair and testosterone to spare.
What you don’t get is any sense of the real McIntyre, the man behind the joke machine. McIntyre watchers will know he’s suffered a setback in recent months, with the prompt cancellation of the US edition of his gameshow The Wheel . If this is significant to him, if he has dreams of breaking America, how he feels about being a primetime superstar – you’ll find the answers to none of this in his stage act, which casts him as an everyman whose concerns are indistinguishable from yours and mine.
Isn’t that stretching things? The man’s (I’m guessing) a multimillionaire. But part of McIntyre’s genius is how his act neutralises class in this most class-conscious of countries. Most major mass-appeal comics are proudly working class ( Mo Gilligan , John Bishop, Micky Flanagan , Sarah Millican). Those who aren’t – such as Jack Whitehall – have to burlesque their own poshness for popular approval. But McIntyre seldom exaggerates or apologises for his privilege; indeed he rarely affords it the slightest significance. It’s there if you’re looking for it, but rendered irrelevant by the man’s superpower relatability, a personality so democratic as to completely override this or that mention of having a gardener or dining on gnocchi.
And so McIntyre’s Covid experiences, according to Macnificent at least, are the same as all our Covid experiences: cutting his family’s hair, cultivating an Amazon dependency. But even audiences developing an immunity by now to coronavirus comedy (myself among them) will be tickled by McIntyre’s novel take – in which a birthday party for his wife transmogrifies, via a Covid diagnosis for McIntyre himself, into a mortal threat to his whole family.
There are lesser routines in the show. The rude wordplay that ends act one is a bit effortful, and the section on his dieting hacks when on a trip to the US requires a greater measure of contrivance than the best of his work. Sometimes it’s too obvious that McIntyre isn’t just delivering a comedy routine, he’s drilling a new catchphrase for the merch. One of the least convincing gags of the evening, meanwhile, finds our host panicking, on the release of tickets for this tour, that he’s gone out of fashion and no one’s going to come. Give over, Michael! I wouldn’t bet against another 24 years of adulation: Macnificent finds the McIntyre machine as well-oiled as ever.

Michael McIntyre's surgery explained after sudden hospitalisation
The wheel presenter has cancelled several dates on his current tour.
Michael McIntyre worried fans last week when he pulled out of a tour date in Plymouth. The comedian, who also presents The Wheel , said his cancellation was due to "illness", causing fans to speculate on what was wrong with the star.
Their questions were answered on Sunday evening, when Michael's official X account shared that he was cancelling more upcoming dates, explaining that he is in hospital following surgery.
Announcing that his Monday show in Southampton is also cancelled, the note read: "We regret to inform customers that Michael McIntyre will be unable to perform on Mondy 4 March. Unfortunately Michael has had an operation to remove kidney stones."
The note continued that fans will receive a new date to attend or a refund, but many of Michael's followers wondered if he would be fit for other upcoming gigs.
Luckily for them, and for Michael, recovery from kidney stone removals generally only takes a few days, with the National Kidney Foundation confirming that many people can fully resume daily activities within one to two days.

Some kidney stones can be passed naturally, by drinking lots of fluids, but if they’re too big, which seems to be the case for Michael, surgery can be required.
What surgery has Michael McIntyre had?
Treatments for kidney stones range from shock wave lithotripsy, which sends high-frequency sound waves to pinpoint where the kidney stone is. This breaks it into smaller pieces so it can be passed in your urine.
Another option is ureteroscopy. More invasive than the former, this sees a long, thin telescope inserted into your body, either to try and remove the stone, or a laser is also inserted to break it down.

This procedure is performed under general anaesthetic.
The final option is percutaneous nephrolithotomy, also carried out under general anaesthetic. This sees a small cut made into the back and the stone is either pulled out, or broken down by a laser.
HELLO! spoke to consultant urological surgeon Hamid Abboudi about Michael's surgery, with the doctor explaining: "Considering the sudden and unexpected nature of Michaels's announcement, and the wording used to describe the treatment as an ‘operation’ it is likely that he had a stone in the kidney which dropped down and got stuck in the ureter.
"The most common operation used to remove such stones is the ureteroscopy and laser stone fragmentation."
We hope Michael recovers swiftly from his ordeal!

Stand-Up Comedian Rushed to Hospital for Surgery, Forced to Cancel Gig
Michael McIntyre is recovering after his team says the comedian had an operation to remove kidney stones.
By Allison Schonter - March 5, 2024 09:44 am EST
Comedian Michael McIntyre has pulled out of yet another performance on his Macnificent World Tour after he was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery. Days after the stand-up comedian, 48, was forced to pull out of playing Plymouth Pavilions on Thursday, Feb. 20 due to an unspecified "illness," McIntyre's Monday, March 4 show at Southhampton's Mayflower Theatre has been canceled after McIntyre underwent surgery to remove kidney stones.
"We regret to inform customers that Michael McIntyre will be unable to perform on Monday 4 March at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton," a statement shared by the comedy star's team read. "Unfortunately, Michael has had an operation to remove kidney stones. The show will be rescheduled to a later date which will be announced shortly."
News of the Michael McIntyre's Big Show host's hospitalization sparked a flurry of well wishes from fans. Replying to the announcement, one person lamented , "Kidney stones – argh the pain! So sorry to hear you've been suffering." Another person said they were "wishing you a speedy recovery," before quipping, "I hope you had a proper hospital gown to protect your modesty during your visit sir." Somebody else wrote , "Very sorry to hear you are poorly. Nasty business – get well soon."
The cancellation comes after McIntyre's shoe at Plymouth Pavilions on Feb. 20 was canceled. A statement at the time explained that "due to illness Michael is sadly unable to perform tonight's show." The comedian's team said the show would be "rescheduled to a later date to be announced soon." At the time, no further information about McIntyre's "illness" was shared.
Rescheduled dates for both the Plymouth Pavilions and Mayflower Theatre performances have not yet been announced. The comedian's team said when announcing the most recent cancellation Sunday that "tickets will remain valid for the new date," and those unable to make the rescheduled performance can receive a refund. McIntyre is next set to perform for three nights at Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena from Friday to Sunday, with performances scheduled later in March in Newcastle and Manchester. He also has performances scheduled in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Belfast later this spring. It is unclear if any further shows will be impacted by the comedian's recovery.

Michael McIntyre cancels show on a tour that's coming to Birmingham
M ichael McIntyre fans were disappointed when the comedian was forced to cancel a gig in Devon just hours before the show was due to start. Illness struck on the final night of a seven-day stint at Plymouth Pavilions.
Last night (Thursday February 29), a statement was issued on the Plymouth Pavilions Facebook page at 5.35pm confirming that the gig had been cancelled. According to a PlymouthLive report , Pavilions bosses said they notified people as soon as they found out.
This is part of a UK tour which includes a date in Birmingham. It would appear that this was a one-off cancellation due to ill health and he should hopefully still be fine to perform at Utilita Arena in May 2024. You can book tickets via the Ticket Factory website here .

The Facebook statement said: "TONIGHTS SHOW POSTPONED. Due to illness Michael McIntyre is unable to perform tonight's show, Thursday, February 29, at Plymouth Pavilions. The show will be postponed and rescheduled to a later date which will be announced soon.
"Tickets will remain valid for the new date. If you are unable to make the new date you will be entitled to a refund. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused."
Fans were gutted by the news. One said: “Gutted. Already on our way on the train to see him!! Hope he is feeling better soon tho and will look forward to seeing him at a later date.”
Another added: “That’s a shame, literally here ready to go! But I do hope Michael feels better soon! See you on the new date.”
Some fans were upset by the late notice. One said: “Nothing like late notice. Already on route surely they knew before 20 minutes ago he was unwell?.” Another added: “I understand that people can't plan being ill, but surely you knew this before 5.30 roughly when this was posted? Half an hour before the doors open?”
It has been five years since the comic star's last tour. The new show is all about what's been happening in the last half-decade. In previous tours, Michael has broken box office records, selling over four million tickets around the world. The show, presented by Off The Kerb Productions, is called Macnificent.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Michael McIntyre fans share fresh concerns as he cancels gig to undergo surgery
Share this with
Michael McIntyre fans have expressed their concern after the comic was forced to cancel a gig over needing surgery.
It was announced over the weekend that Michael would be unable to perform in Southampton on March 4 due to an operation to remove kidney stone, an extremely painful condition which sees stones form in the kidneys and block the ureter.
The 48-year-old ’s agents Off The Kerb took to social media with the news, apologising for ‘any inconvenience’ as they wrote: ‘We regret to inform customers that Michael McIntyre will be unable to perform on Monday 4 March at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton.
‘Unfortunately, Michael has had an operation to remove kidney stones.
‘The show will be rescheduled to a later date which will be announced shortly. Tickets will remain valid for the new date.If you are unable to make the new date you will be entitled to a refund.’
Fans have wished Michael well as he recovers from the operation, however others worried about his planned upcoming gig and whether it too could be affected.
Southampton marked Michael’s second rescheduled show of his Macnificent World Tour, after missing Plymouth last month due to illness.
And with the planned Nottingham gigs just days away on March 8, 9 and 10, fans are eagerly waiting for confirmation – one way or another.
Taking to X, user Alex Hird asked if Michael’s surgery means ‘future shows will be cancelled to allow for a full recovery? If so, can that period of recovery be announced ASAP rather than leave it to a day or two before cancelling?’
Dan Gabriel wished the comic a ‘speedy recovery’ and asked if it is ‘likely to effect Nottingham next weekend? Due to be there on Saturday (sic).’
pic.twitter.com/EBUFNRCcLo — Michael McIntyre (@McInTweet) March 3, 2024
Paul Dunham shared a similar sentiment, first urging Michael to feel better soon, and then asking if Nottingham will take place on March 9 – ‘need to know if to cancel hotel etc, sorry for asking’.
Plenty of others simply wished Michael the best in his recovery, many recalling their own painful memories of suffering with kidney stones.
The NHS says kidney stones are quite common, with one in 10 people affected. They can be ‘extremely painful’ and can lead to kidney infections and problems with the organs if left untreated.
They occur when waste products in the blood form crystals that collect inside the kidneys and over time these can build up to form a hard stone-like lump.
While most kidney stones are small enough to pass through while urinating, larger ones may need to be ‘broken up or removed with surgery’, according to the NHS.
After the planned Nottingham gigs, Michael is due to travel to Newcastle on March 15.
The much-loved comedian is also back on our screens with his BBC Big Show programme, providing many laughs and celebrity shenanigans.
When he’s not on tour or on TV, Michael is with his wife, Kitty, whom he married in 2003. She works as an aromatherapist in London.
Michael and Kitty have two sons, Lucas and Oscar, who are frequently mentioned in their dad’s routines.
In a famous skit about the struggles of putting his young sons to bed, the comedian once joked: ‘You never love your children more than when they’re unconscious, but still breathing.’
In another joke about his kids, he said: ‘My son’s got two words: car and map, that’s all he can say. “Car, car, map, car!”
‘I’m fairly worried he’s trying to escape. So if the next word is passport, we’re in serious trouble.’

We really enjoyed our tour around Moscow with Anna. This tour takes you to all the main sights. I highly recommend this tour . Anna also took us inside a fantastic traditional Russian store and showed us traditional Russian delicacies. Highly recommend the tour! We loved our day!
I had only one day to tour Moscow. After researching many tours, I chose the Discover Moscow walking tour. Despite the cold weather, the tour was fantastic. Tanya was my guide and was great. She is a walking encyclopedia of history and facts and was able to answer every question I threw at her plus some. Thanks for a great day! PS – opted for the optional professional photos which I highly recommend as well. Well done to all of you at Moscow tours
3 out of 5 of our party had never before been to Russia so had no idea what to expect, so the private tours with guide were essential.
