Culture and customs.

There are many annual events marking important dates in religious and cultural calendars across Israel and the Palestinian territories. Jerusalem, also known as the Holy Land, is touted as the historical and religious center of the Western world, with followers of Christianity, Judaism and Islam all holding the city sacred.

As you would expect from such a destination, there are daily displays of devotion and pilgrimage that happen on the streets and in public arenas, as well as a wide range of things to see. Take note of any traditions or events that occur which might affect your travel plans.

Shabbat , or the Sabbath, is a weekly day of rest recognized by the religious and non-religious Jewish populations, as well as some others across the region. The resting period lasts from 20-30 minutes before sundown on Friday to an hour after sundown on Saturday night, and depending on which part of the country you are in, you will notice different levels of impact on public transport and businesses.

In Tel Aviv, for example, Friday night is one of the city’s busiest nights, so you shouldn’t be too affected. In Jerusalem, however, many restaurants close until Saturday night, and your hotel front desk may close for Friday evening and the next day as workers may be observing Shabbat. If you find yourself in Jerusalem and parts of Galilee during Shabbat, ensure that you have researched places to eat and things to see that will be open and available over this time. In other parts of the country, like the North Coast, Negev Desert, Dead Sea and Tel Aviv, your stay should be mainly unaffected; however, it’s best to have a back-up plan just in case your preferences aren’t open.

It is important to understand how Shabbat could affect your visit, as you may find yourself without many restaurant or cafe options, or having to walk or take an expensive taxi (if you can find one) to get around.

During the ninth and holiest month in the Islamic calendar (the Gregorian, or ‘Western’, calendar equivalent dates of which change each year) Ramadan is observed by Muslims across the world as a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset – refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. The period of Eid marks the end of fasting with three days of feasting and celebration. For the duration of Ramadan, expect almost all restaurants and some other establishments in Muslim areas to be closed during daylight hours, with the exception of hotels.

History and government

Ancient history.

The roots of Israel extend back thousands of years, and many stories of origin stem from the Hebrew Bible and trace back to Abraham, who is considered both the father of Judaism (through his son Isaac) and Islam (through his son Ishmael). Descendants of Abraham are said to have been held captive in Egypt for centuries before settling in Canaan, located where some of Israel and the Palestinian Territories’ contested regions are today. These sites, and especially Jerusalem, have been besieged and ruled by many empires over the centuries of their history – Babylonian, Persian, Greek Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman, among others.

20th century

Fast-forward to the 20th century, when Great Britain supported an establishment of a permanent Jewish state in the region then recognized as Palestine. British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour stated intentions to set up a ‘national home’ in Palestine for Jewish populations under the Balfour Declaration. In late 1947, the United Nations approved a plan for the partition of Palestine. On 14 May 1948, Israel proclaimed its independence under the rule of the head of the Jewish Agency, David Ben-Gurion. For Palestinian Arabs, this meant a mass exodus from what was to become Israel.

Since then, as over many points during the region’s history, there has been a series of conflicts regarding control in the territories. Currently, parts of Israel and the Palestinian Territories are still contested, and complex political relationships exist in the country to navigate administration over certain regions, whether the responsibility of Israel, Palestine, or a combination of both. Israel has peace agreements with Jordan and Egypt , but not some other Middle Eastern neighbors, so border crossing can be complicated.

Eating and drinking

These regions are full of delightful things to taste. Whether you’re fine-dining in Tel Aviv or having a street-side snack at Machane Yehuda market in Jerusalem, there's no shortage of Middle Eastern cuisine to keep your mouth watering.

Found in food stands on street corners and in markets all around the country, falafel is touted as Israel’s national dish and, despite competing stories of where they were invented, these snacks are now a staple in Israeli cuisine. Made from fava beans, chickpeas or a combination of both, enjoy them as either part of a Middle Eastern mezze, or stuffed into a pita with hummus, tahini, pickles and salad.

Shakshuka accurately translates as ‘a mixture’, describing a dish of eggs baked in a spiced tomato, chili, pepper and garlic sauce and served in a traditional pan. Every street food vendor or shakshuka master believes they’ve got the best recipe, so it’s a good idea to taste a broad sample in order to decide for yourself!

Can anything be more perfect? This silky chickpea dip is a pita’s best friend, and can be lathered on nearly anything and everything, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. To take things up a notch, order a hummus masabacha (topped with chickpeas, paprika, lemon and tahini) or hummus kawarma (topped with lamb mince, onions and parsley).

The Greeks have got souvlaki, the Turkish have got doner, but in these parts, it’s called shawarma. This type of local kebab is all about the traditional spices used and the ingredients that get stuffed inside – think hummus, salad, pickled turnips and tahini. An easy on-the-go lunch.

Obviously, many Middle Eastern classic dishes are hard to trace back their origin; however, sabich is one that definitely finds its roots as Jewish Israeli. Brought here in the 1950s by Jewish immigrants from Iraq, this pita stuffed with fried eggplant, hard boiled eggs, salad, hummus and tahini is now one of the country’s most popular street food dishes. Sabich is often topped off with a drizzle of amba – a spicy sweet mango chutney.

Lechem bread

If you haven’t realized already, Israeli cuisine is big on bread. In particular, lechem bread plays not only an important role in the country’s diet, but is also of religious significance in Jewish cultures – often breaking two loaves of this bread signifies the start of a meal during Shabbat.

A sweet dessert found all around the Middle East, knafeh is a cheese pastry soaked in sugar syrup, often flavored with rosewater or orange blossom. Perfect for an after-dinner snack, or an afternoon pick-me-up.

This part of the world is also known for growing wine grapes. The biggest wine-growing region, the Sharon Plain near the Mount Carmel range, boasts perfect conditions – a temperate climate and sediment-rich soils on slopes that face the Mediterranean Sea. Visit Zichron Yaakov, a town in this region, on an Intrepid Real Food Adventure for a day of wine tasting.

Geography and environment

With beaches and chalk cliffs on the Mediterranean coastline, parched desert in the north, mountains (and more desert!) in the south and fertile valleys in the center, Israel and the Palestinian Territories boast an astounding amount of diverse landscapes to travel through in a small area, meaning you can bounce from one geographic wonder to another with minimal travel time.   Sharing borders and cultures with Egypt , Jordan , Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank and Gaza Strip, you can find modern cities, like Tel Aviv and remote villages in the mountains.

From the ultra-modern shopping malls of Tel Aviv to the laneway markets of Jerusalem’s Old City, there’s no shortage of shopping spots in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. In Tel Aviv and some parts of Jerusalem, expect to see some big global brands, as well as local favorites, such as Hamashbir and Castro.

During your time here, you’ll have opportunities to walk around and shop at local markets. For purchases under roughly USD 8 (ISL 30), it's best to carry small denominations of currency, as stallholders or retailers likely won’t accept credit cards as payment.

Outside of markets and Jerusalem’s Old City, bartering is usually not accepted, and most stores have fixed prices for their products. If you do have any questions about shopping at markets or stores during your time in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, ask your group leader who’ll be able to let you in on the dos and don’ts.

Israel and the Palestinian Territories travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Israel and the Palestinian Territories?

Israel and the Palestinian Territories grant on-arrival visas to tourists of most nationalities. If you have evidence in your passport of visits to certain Islamic countries, Israeli border officials will scrutinize you regarding the purpose of your visit to Israel. The delay can be difficult and lengthy; however, patience and a friendly demeanor are advised when dealing with officials. Instead of an entry stamp, you will receive a loose entry card on arrival. Keep this in your passport until you leave, as this is evidence of your legal entry into Israel and the Palestinian Territories.

It is important to be aware that many Arab and Islamic countries deny entry to any person that has evidence of a visit to Israel. Syria, Iran, Libya and several other countries are included in this list. If you wish to travel to other countries in the region after Israel, please note that you may be refused entry if your passport, luggage or possessions indicate you have been to Israel.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of your tour itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in Israel and the Palestinian Territories?

Tipping 10-15% for good service is standard practice in restaurants, bars and cafes, as well as on tours. Taxi drivers and other service workers like hotel staff generally don't expect tips. Tipping is not compulsory in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, but if you are satisfied with the services provided, a tip is appropriate.

What is the internet access like in Israel and the Palestinian Territories?

Internet access is widespread in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, so accessing the internet via wi-fi hot spots is easy in Israel's cities. Rural areas will have less internet connectivity, so beware of this when traveling through remote regions of the country.

Most accommodation and some eateries offer wi-fi networks, which are usually free to use with an access code. If you wish to stay connected for the majority of your trip, it may be wise to purchase a prepaid SIM card with a data package or a wi-fi hotspot.

Can I use my mobile/cellphone while in Israel and the Palestinian Territories?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in Israel and the Palestinian Territories’ major cities and built-up areas. Expect limited to no phone coverage in more isolated areas like the Negev Desert.

Global roaming can also be activated when traveling through Israel and the Palestinian Territories; however, be sure to check with your service provider to find out about any fees you may incur when using this option, as sometimes this can be expensive.

What are the toilets like in Israel and the Palestinian Territories?

Most toilets in Israel and the Palestinian Territories are of the modern, flushable variety, but if you’re traveling in remote areas, you may still find squat toilets in use.

  • Can of soft drink = USD 1.70–2.30
  • One hour in an internet cafe = USD 4.50
  • Takeaway snack or light lunch = USD 7–8.50
  • Simple dinner at a cafe or restaurant = USD 17–29

Can I drink the water in Israel and the Palestinian Territories?

Tap water is considered safe to drink in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, unless marked otherwise. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Israel and the Palestinian Territories?

The vast majority of large hotels, restaurants and shops will accept credit cards. For smaller purchases, such as bus and taxi fares, markets and paying for something less than roughly USD 8 (ISL 30), it is advised to have cash on you to cover these costs.

What is ATM access like in Israel and the Palestinian Territories?

ATMs are easily found in Israel and the Palestinian Territories' cities and major towns. They’re less common in rural areas, so prepare accordingly before traveling out of urban centers. In general, ATMs in Israel offer a more competitive exchange rate for local currency than buying Israeli shekels outside of the country.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

When is the best time to travel to Israel and the Palestinian Territories?

Israel and the Palestinian territories offer diverse experiences throughout the year, so there’s really no one ‘best’ time to visit. The shoulder seasons of April–May and September–October are ideal in terms of weather – pleasantly mild temperatures and little to no rainfall. However, many people choose to travel to the area over Christmas to experience winter festivities in Bethlehem, or in summer when coastal hubs like Tel Aviv and Haifa come alive at beach resorts and with outdoor nightlife. There’s a range of things to do in any weather, from skiing in the highlands to enjoying the sun near the Red Sea, so no matter what time you choose to go, it's a great place to take a vacation year-round.

Above all, it's important to note that travel will be affected during religious holidays, with the majority of shops, businesses and public transport shutting down for major public holidays and events. Be sure to consider how Jewish or other religious holidays, like Ramadan, may affect your stay.

What is the weather like in Israel and the Palestinian Territories?

Israel and the Palestinian Territories generally share a Mediterranean climate, with the summer months providing loads of sunshine and scorching temperatures that can reach upwards of 100°F. June to August usually sees the highest temperatures, with milder weather prevailing during autumn (September–October) and spring (April–May). Winter (around November–March) means cooler temperatures and light rain. Snowfall can sometimes occur in the highlands and even in Jerusalem

Are Israel and the Palestinian Territories safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Compared to many of its Middle East neighbors, Israel is quite progressive when it comes to a stance on LGBTQIA+ rights. Homosexuality is legal and some protections are in place regarding gender identity discrimination. Although same-sex marriages are not performed here, they recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere. Since 2015, the Israeli Health Ministry has allowed transgender people to change their registered gender legally without sex reassignment surgery.

Tel Aviv has a thriving gay scene, with many of the bars and nightlife geared towards this. Tel Aviv also hosts a Gay Pride Parade each year in the second week of June, which attracts over 250,000 attendees from across the world.

In the Occupied Palestinian Territories the law does not provide any explicit protections for LGBTQIA+ persons, but there are no formal laws against same-sex sexual activities. Officially, same-sex relations are not illegal but social and cultural attitudes towards homosexuality can be conservative and laws against ‘indecency’ are sometimes used, on an irregular and unpredictable basis, to criminalize same-sex acts.

There are still many conservative regions around Israel and the Palestinian Territories, so be aware of the situation you find yourself in when you are traveling. In these areas, public displays of affection are not encouraged.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex – Israel and  Palestine – or ILGA before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Are Israel and the Palestinian Territories accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Visitors to Israel and the Palestinian Territories with mobility issues will find most areas accessible and easy to get around, with modern infrastructure, despite the old architecture and ancient sites.

Many of Tel Aviv’s beaches can be accessed by ramps, and some hotel beaches have beach wheelchairs available for use. In Jerusalem, the Old City has an accessible trail for those requiring a wheelchair, and many of the sites are wheelchair-friendly.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

Heritage of the Holy Land Tour

Heritage of the Holy Land

Thoroughly recommend this tour. The itinerary covered everything we wanted to see. All the arrangements worked ike clockwork, our guide was absolutely fantastic! Only criticism would be the choice of hotels, the food was buffet style, never hot and finished by 7.30 to 8 so very early nights. Not really 4 star. But that’s only a minor point, overall it was one of the best holidays I have had. Thank you Tourrader!

Discover Israel Tour

Discover Israel

Informative and interesting historical and biblical sites. Accommodations and food were very good and guides and drivers were friendly. Only real glitch was pairing English speaking and Spanish speaking tourists together. Lead tour guide had to repeat everything in both languages. Both sets of tourists were frustrated as it slowed things down. Queue line control at the church of the holy sepulcher was lousy, allowing people to cut lines; and at one point the line didn’t move at all from 3:00 until 4:15. By 5:00, they rushed everyone through — if they maintained flow speed throughout the day instead of just at the end and had more queue line discipline, people could get through faster and suffer less frustration. Jordan river— site near Jericho had putrid looking water; should use a site closer to the Sea of Galilee where the water is cleaner. Dead Sea was disappointing— staff would not allow people to swim or float — only wading.

Heritage & Holy Land - 8 days

The tour, Heritage and Holy Places was terrific!.We packed an enormous amount into the 8 days, and saw Christian, Jewish, Roman and Byzantine places of great interest. Also the borders of Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. Our tour guide gave us history, commentary and much insight into the history and current situation in Israel, as well as the Abrahamic religions. The hotels were very comfortable and our other travellers became a close group who were lots of fun. My only problem was the weather - I would not recommend travelling in Israel in high summer when the temperature can reach 45C. Thank you for facilitating our tour. Trenna Bridge

The Story of the Israeli State - 10 Days Tour

The Story of the Israeli State - 10 Days

My husband and I had never been to Israel and booked this tour as a “bucket-list” event. Our tour guide, Efraim Native, was the best - he was a history professor, knew philosophy, religion, politics, economics, abd engineering - answering every question we had. He was friendly, helpful and made excellent food recommendations. Our tour covered Tel Aviv (our new favorite city), Haifa, the Golan (do not miss the Hula Nature Preserve), and Jerusalem (Old and New). We added the Masada/Dead Sea tour at the end. Finally, we chose the 5-Star hotel option and stayed in true luxurious accommodations). We will use Tour Radar and Click Tours again!

Jewish Israel Luxury Tour 10 days Tour

Jewish Israel Luxury Tour 10 days

We booked a 10-day Luxury Private tour of Israel. Overall, we enjoyed the trip, but there were some disappointments and several surprises that were not clear in the offering materials. The best part was that the guides were quite good. Our guide on the second day seemed to be willing to stay with us until 7 pm, but we had not energy for that. Perhaps he was paid by the hour! The connections to and from the airports were flawless. One flaw was that none of the guides offered us a map of the country or locations we were visiting. We had to get our bearings on our own. On the first three days, our guides (Gil and Eli) charged us for parking fees and entry fees. Thankfully, you have refunded these fees. We wonder if these two guides were reimbursed by the tour company as well as collecting from us. Our fourth guide (Sarah) paid for all fees. On the last day, Moti also paid for all fees. Our guide on the third day, Gil, skipped the visit to the Dead Sea Scrolls. Instead, he just summarized it verbally while driving past it on the highway. When we said that the visit was on our itinerary, he replied: “It’s optional.” Ha Ha! He evidently wanted to get home early that day, as he dropped us off at our hotel at the Dead Sea at about 2:30 pm. Thus, we did not get the full-day tour for which we paid. Gil had incorrect information about which was our hotel at the Dead Sea, but it was cleared up by phone calls just prior to our arrival. We did not understand that we would have no continuity of service from Bookings. Tour guides picked us up in the morning and returned us to our hotel at the end of the day. We did not have the names of our guides in advance, and were not provided with a telephone number to reach them. As a private tour we were to have some discretion over sites visited. Some guides understood this while others did not. The itinerary in the offering materials for the days in the Galilee made little sense, but our guide (Moti) was able to construct tours that worked. Our major complaint is that you promoted this as a luxury tour, yet there was little luxurious about it. Our Jerusalem and Dead Sea hotels were good. Our Tel Aviv hotel was less than good. Our 3-day kibbutz stay was not good. At the kibbutz, the room was not properly cleaned when we arrived. The TV was tiny and barely functional. We were nowhere near places to eat the evening meal and transportation to/from dinner was not easy. We tipped someone to drive us to and from dinner one night. However, the kibbutz breakfast was excellent. We think you owe us a partial refund for the three nights we spent at the kibbutz. In the evenings, we wanted to watch the French Open tennis at the hotels, but the hotel in Tel Aviv did not offer that channel. Also, at that hotel, I asked at the desk clerk if they could change a 100 NIS bill. The answer: “No.” Also, in that hotel, the thermostat was set to a temperature that was too cold for us, but it COULD NOT be changed. The hotel desk clerk advised with a smile: “You could turn it off.” Though the location was good, the breakfast at that hotel was plentiful but not the best. We added a day trip to Petra, expecting it to be of the same quality as the rest of our trip. Far from it! We traveled on 40-person buses and toured with the same large group. The walking tour was long, and we had to pay $50 for a return golf-cart ride.

Really enjoyed this tour which showed the highlights of Israel from an historical point of view. It had a great varied itinerary with religious sites, history, culture and scenery. We were fortunate that our driver Henry suggested altering the itinerary to climb Masada first thing in the morning when it was cooler. The views were amazing! Really enjoyed the walking tour of Old Jerusalem. Our guide seemed less knowledgeable than other guides that we have had on past Intrepid tours but our driver helped fill in the gaps.

Dome of the Rock:

This structure dominates the old city. It is the shrine for Islam’s third most holy site. It covers a black stone in the mountain where Muhammad is said to have ascended to heaven. It was the first dome shrine to be built and is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture. It’s made of wood with marble slabs inside and covered with Persian tiles on the outside.

Known in the bible as Sea of the Arabah or Salt Sea, it gets its name from the high mineral content preventing anything from living in it. The lowest point of dry land on earth is the shoreline of the Dead Sea. Nearly 7 million tons of water evaporate from it every day, but the minerals remain.

Israel ms3

Dead Sea Scrolls:

The first seven of many Dead Sea Scrolls were found by 3 brothers while gathering their goats high in the mountains. The brothers were not aware of what they found and sold the scripts. Years later, all scripts made their way to one location where the full content was finally revealed. See the Shrine of the Book at the Israel Museum to view the scrolls on display.

This is the birth place of Jesus. Christians all over the world consider this a holy site, but it is also significant to Jews because it is the burial place of the matriarch Rachel and birth place of King David. Manger Square is the main focus during Christmas celebrations three times a year.

Destination Must-Do's

Israel md1

Explore Jerusalem:

This historic location plays a major part in the 3 monotheistic religions. The heart of Jerusalem is in the Old City. This section is surrounded by a wall divided into 4 quarters: Armenian, Christian, Jewish and Muslim. Inside are important holy sites of the 3 major religions. Jerusalem also has a New City as well that still captures the original charm of the city.

Israel md3

Sea of Galilee:

This is a mountainous region in Israel’s north that is divided into two parts. It is densely populated and has the largest variety of ethnic communities in Israel. Its natural beauty and landscapes make it a main tourist destination. However, it is also popular for its national antiquities parks, farming communities, nature reserves, Jewish holy sites, Christian holy sites, and the Jordan River. One of the best ways to experience Galilee is to take a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee.

Israel md2

Visit the Western Wall:

Located in Jerusalem's Old City, the Western Wall is one of the holiest Jewish sites in Israel. Also known as the Wailing Wall or the Kotel, this sacred place is visited by millions of pilgrims each year so that they may pray and reflect. It is the only intact remnants of the Second Temple of Jerusalem and dates back to 2nd century BCE.

Israel md4

Enjoy Tel Aviv:

Tel Aviv is Israel’s economic and cultural center and it’s referred to as the “city that never stops.” It is the country’s first modern Jewish city in Israel, but it still holds quite a bit of history. Visitors can find several important Christian sites there, but it’s also teeming with restaurants, shops, old courtyards, fishing ports and night clubs that attract tourists from all over.

Olive wood carvings are extremely popular here. For those who love beautiful jewels and jewelry, Israel is one of the world's leading diamond manufacturing and trading centers.

Israel Tours & Travel Guide

Israel Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Israel is a tiny country – with just a bit more land than the U.S. state of Massachusetts – but is holy land to three major world religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. While much of it is desert, Biblical sites abound and its capital, Jerusalem, is one of the world’s great cities. Rich in history, culture, and religious tradition, Israel is often controversial -- but always memorable.

Israel – sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims – is a must-see destination for anyone interested in the religious history of those three faiths. Biblical names like Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth , and the Sea of Galilee come alive as you tour this fascinating and controversial nation.

No matter where you stand on the political issues here, there’s no denying the emotional impact of seeing sites you’ve heard about all your life in church, synagogue, mosque, or on the nightly news.

Since its founding in 1948 as a Jewish state in the heart of the Arabic Middle East, Israel’s borders have expanded and contracted several times over the decades, following a number of wars, skirmishes and negotiated agreements with their neighbors. It remains remarkably small for such an oversized battleground; at some points, the country is just a few miles wide.

As you travel through Israel , you’ll find that most of its citizens are fiercely proud of their country, and also fiercely defensive about its right to exist. Your guide may be an outspoken advocate for or, alternatively, a harsh critic of government policies. But no matter which, chances are he or she will be very open to discussion – and rigorous debate – about Israel and its future. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or state your viewpoints; it’s expected.

Israel is a more diverse country than many would imagine. Among the largely Jewish population, you’ll find secular Jews as well as the Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox , many of whom are at odds with each other. Jews have emigrated to Israel from Eastern Europe, Russia, the U.S., and many other parts of the world. More than 1,600,000-- about a fifth of Israel’s population – are Arabs.

Here are some of the highlights you can expect to see as you travel in Israel:

Until 1967 and the Arab-Israeli six-day war, Jerusalem – considered the holiest city for Jews, Christians, and Muslims -- was a divided city. The modern west side was under Israeli control and the east side – including the historic old city -- under Jordanian control. East Jerusalem is still largely Palestinian, and tensions between the two sides remain high.

The old city makes up just one percent of present-day Jerusalem (population 800,000), but contains most of its must-see sights. You can enter the old walled city through seven different gates, and gain an overview of the old city by walking atop its ramparts if you wish. Walking through the old city itself is like a return to Biblical times: crowded, sometimes chaotic, with narrow streets winding past ancient monuments, both historic and revered.

The Jewish Quarter is home to the Western Wall (often mistakenly called the Wailing Wall), which dates from the era of King Herod and the Romans. The wall forms the western boundary of the Temple Mount , considered the holiest place in Judaism -- but is topped by the golden Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque , which are holy to Islam.

Beyond is the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Sepulchre, said to be the site of Jesus’ tomb where Christ rose from the dead three days after his crucifixion. You can walk the Via Dolorosa in the traditional footsteps of Jesus, where signs mark the 14 stages of the cross that Jesus had to carry.

Across a valley lies the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives , where Jesus is said to have hidden after the Last Supper with his disciples. From here, beside 2,000-year-old olive trees , you can get the classic panoramic view of the old city .

Five miles south of Jerusalem lies the city of Bethlehem, the Biblical birthplace of Jesus.  Now run by the Palestinian Authority, it’s home to the ancient Church of the Nativity, built by the Emperor Constantine on the traditional site of Jesus’ manger. You can descend into the church to join the pilgrims who come to worship from around the world.

Tel Aviv and Jaffa

Mostly modern Tel Aviv, previously the Israeli capital, has about half the population of Jerusalem and features a very pleasant setting along the Mediterranean Sea. You can walk along the promenade to visit ancient Jaffa, site of the Biblical story of Jonah and the Whale , passing through the millennia as waves lap the beaches.

The Galilee and Nazareth

The Sea of Galilee in northern Israel is actually a lake that divides the north and south portions of the River Jordan, which is long and surprisingly narrow (the river runs north to Syria and south to the Dead Sea).

Looking across the sea from the town of Tiberias, you can view the Golan Heights, once part of Syria, as well as war-torn Syria in the distance. You can also visit the spot on the River Jordan where Jesus is said to have been baptized by John the Baptist.

On the road from the Sea of Galilee to Nazareth, you’ll pass through Cana, where, according to the New Testament, Jesus performed his first miracle, turning water into wine. Nazareth, where Jesus grew up , is heavily Arabic but thrives on Christian tourism. You can view two contending locations said to be the site of the Annunciation , where angels reputedly told the Virgin Mary of her Immaculate Conception.

Masada and The Dead Sea

Around 70 AD, 960 Jewish zealots held out atop Masada, a 1,300-foot-high mountain fortress, to battle a three-year-long Roman siege. When the Romans finally neared victory, the Jews committed mass suicide. It was the last stand of the Jewish people in the Holy Land before beginning their nearly 2,000-year-long exile.

You can ride a cable car to the top of the mountain, which is now the single most visited site in Israel. From there, you have an overview of the Dead Sea, the world’s lowest point and saltiest body of water , where it’s virtually impossible to sink.

The Negev Desert and Eilat

The triangular southern third of Israel, which borders Egypt’s Sinai Desert, is filled by the Negev Desert. While it’s mostly a hot, dry, dusty patch of land with few residents, you can visit the ruins of old caravan towns as well as the huge Ramon crater . At Israel’s southern tip is the resort town of Eilat on the northern end of the Red Sea, where there are beaches and other amenities. From Eilat, many tours lead to one- or two-day visits to Petra, Jordan’s ancient red-rock city , and Wadi Rum, a spectacular area of desert gorges, cliffs, and caverns.

"Every place we visited was breathtakingly beautiful, with stunning landscapes and rich historical and cultural heritage. We highly recommend visiting Israel to anyone who wants to experience an unforgettable journey. We had a life-changing time there and are already planning to return." Simon L. and Beatriz G. – Tour to Israel/Egypt/Jordan February 2024 "I had a wonderful time in Israel. I felt while I was there the precautions that were taken for our safety were well in hand. I still got to experience many holy sites and be blessed by walking the path that Jesus walked. Every day was started in prayer, singing, or scripture reading which also extended the blessing of the trip." Quincie L. – Tour to Israel/Egypt/Jordan February 2024

Featured Sites in Israel

The city of Jerusalem offers a unique convergence of Judaism, Christianity and the Muslim faith. For Christians who visit Jerusalem, you will learn about many stories of the Bible while walking her streets. Many actors in the Bible such as Abraham, King David, King Solomon, the twelve disciples and Jesus all lived, visited, or spent time there. The Passion week of Christ will be highlighted during our stay as we visit the Mount of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Western Wall, the Way of Suffering and the Garden Tomb.

Sea of Galilee

Nowhere in Israel does the Bible come to life more than along the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Pilgrims who visit the Galilee region will have opportunity to imagine what life was like 2,000 years ago and what Jesus and the twelve disciples experienced while fishing on the Sea of Galilee. The peaceful setting and the natural wonders of the Golan Heights to the east and Mt. Arbel to the west make for a great way to start your morning in quiet reflection. During our tour, we will explore the Biblical towns of Capernaum, Magdala, Nazareth and take a meaningful cruise on the Sea of Galilee.

The Dead Sea is not only the lowest & most lifeless lake in the world, but also nearly 10% saltier than the ocean. Travelers will enjoy the beautiful colors of the blue water and the red mountains of Jordan to the east. Take time to enjoy a once in a lifetime Dead Sea “float” either in the sea itself or at one of the warm salt water pools at our hotel. The Dead Sea experience is truly a bucket list visit you won’t want to miss!

Garden Tomb

Our visit to the Garden Tomb and its surrounding gardens is normally one of the highlights of our tour to Israel. The Garden Tomb is a rock-cut tomb in Jerusalem that was unearthed in 1867 and is considered, by some Protestants, to be the site of the burial and resurrection of Jesus. Our visit offers a unique time of prayer, reflection, communion, and praise which will be a special life-long memory for many travelers.

Jordan River Baptism Site

The Jordan River Baptist Site or “Yardenit” is a baptism site located along the Jordan River just south of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel. This site is frequented by Christian Pilgrims who enjoy imagining the setting of the baptism of Jesus. For anyone who would like to be baptized in the Jordan River, Yardenit has been developed to be a peaceful setting with beautiful gardens, clean colored water, changing facilities, showers and a nice souvenir shop.

Caesarea Philippi

To many Pilgrim travelers, Caesarea Philippi is a special surprise while on their tour. Located along the rushing springs of Mt. Hermon, the beautiful and natural setting is where Jesus asked his disciples “Who do men say that I am?” He asked this question while observing the pagan worship of the god Pan as worshipers offered their sacrifice at the “Gates of Hell”. Our time at Caesarea Philippi is one of many opportunities throughout our tour to see the lessons and message of the Bible come to light in a special way.

Just returned from "Roots of your Faith" tour run by America Israel Tours and had an awesome time! Our Guide, Yair, was the greatest, our driver, Avi, was superb, and we enjoyed all seven days we were in Israel. Masada, The Garden Tomb, and the Sea of Galilee were special moments that will stay with us forever".

I have traveled throughout Europe and Central America with many different tour guides. Tamar, with America Israel Tours, is my favorite. Her knowledge of the Bible and its history brought it to life. And added with her extensive knowledge was her wit and humor. Best tour guide I've ever had by far. America Israel Tours personally were great in setting up our trip and taking great care of us".

Israel Tours

With its immense historical significance and sacred sites, Israel is one of the most fascinating countries in the world. Its capital Jerusalem is steeped in history and home to three of the world’s holiest religious sites: the Temple Mount, the Wailing Wall and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, attracting Muslim, Jewish and Christian pilgrims from across the globe. Walk the streets of modern Tel Aviv and you’ll see grand synagogues beside humble churches and reflective high-rises, interspersed with trendy cafes.

The country’s modest size encourages exploration, allowing travellers to feast on a breakfast of coffee and shakshuka (baked eggs) in the coastal town of Eilat, stop for a dip in the Dead Sea and make it to the Mediterranean city of Haifa by sunset. Along the way, watch as deserts dotted with ruins roll into valleys and bustling cities. Israel is one destination you’ll never forget.

Israel - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Jaffa, Israel's ancient port city

Holidays in Israel will show you an amalgamation of an ancient homeland and a modern world. From deserts to snow covered mountains, this Middle Eastern oasis will lead you to revelations that no newspaper or online article could ever express. A trip to Israel will leave you transformed because it will challenge every misconception you have ever heard.

Tour Highlights

  • Travel to Israel’s north, and visit Mount Hermon; if you’re there at the right time, you might see some snow in this desert country.
  • Sleep under the stars with the Bedouins in the Negev desert; enjoy a meal and tea, maybe even ride a camel.
  • Visit the modern city of Tel Aviv, and experience the nightlife and the modernity of an otherwise ancient land.
  • Smell, taste, and touch all of the food and drink Israel has to offer in outdoor markets, called shuks.
  • Float in the Dead Sea; known for its magic mineral mud, this is the lowest place in Israel, and because of all of the salt, you are buoyant in the water.
  • If you’re in Tel Aviv, go to the Olympic museum and learn of Israel’s checkered past with the Olympics.

Travel Tips

  • If you’re in the shuk heckling and bargaining is welcomed and encouraged.
  • Taxis and cars are a safe bet for transportation; the only thing to be aware of is the driving.
  • When visiting Holy sites, like the Western Wall or the City of David, make sure to cover up; women in long skirts.
  • Do not go to the shuks on Friday; people are dashing around trying to get their last licks in before Shabbat.
  • Remember that from Friday night to Saturday night, Jerusalem and other cities shut down because of Shabbat; make sure you have everything you need before then.

Israel has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Israel before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Israel, do check out our Israel Travel Guide for more information.

Israel Discovery Guided Tour

Experience Jerusalem & the Dead Sea During a 9-Day Guided Tour of Israel

See some of the world's most sacred sites during this 9-day guided tour of Israel. Travel to Tel Aviv, where you’ll see the Habima National Theater, Rabin Square and Carmel Market. Walk through the ancient coastal city of Caesarea and the ruins of a once-raucous Roman amphitheater. Drive seaside roads to Tiberias and break challah during traditional multi-course dinner celebrating Shabbat, a day of rest. See Mount Beatitude, where Jesus is said to have preached the Sermon on the Mount — then journey to the Jordan Valley, where you can float in the buoyant waters of the salty Dead Sea. Traverse the cobbled alleyways of Jerusalem to the city’s most sacred monument, the Wailing Wall, and visit a Holocaust memorial honoring those who died in World War II.

Stop by the Red Sea on a Eliat vacation

Eliat is a historic town on the coast of the Red Sea that offers luxury resorts and outdoor adventure. The most popular attraction here is the diving opportunities in the sea, though the beaches alone are worthwhile, too. This town is also close to the desert, so you can add some sandy adventures to your itinerary, with tours readily available.

An image of jerusalem

Dive into history with Jerusalem vacation packages

Jerusalem is one of the most important cities in all the Abrahamic faiths, and that history runs deep. You'll find incredible historic structures and monuments within the city, with some dating back thousands of years. Of course, you'll still find modern attractions as well, along with some amazing food unique to the region. The local natural features are particularly impressive as well.

An image of tel aviv

Visit a coastal city with Tel Aviv vacation packages

Tel Aviv is a modern metropolis that offers a fascinating look into modern Israel. The skyline is packed full of towering skyscrapers, and you can enjoy museums, restaurants, and activities just as easily as you can enjoy the beach here. Keep an eye out for premier examples of modernist architecture, as this city has some of the best in the world.

Are airlines returning to Israel, despite the war on Gaza?

The number of airlines flying into the country has crawled back up to 45, from a low of just seven in December.

El Al Israel Airlines planes are seen on the tarmac at Ben Gurion International airport in Lod, near Tel Aviv

Almost as soon as Israel’s war on Gaza broke out on October 7, many airlines suspended or cancelled their flights to Israel.

Last week, Yossi Fattal, director general of Israel’s Chamber of Inbound Tourism Organisers, complained that Israel had become isolated – “like North Korea” – as dozens of airlines remained reluctant to fly there.

Which airlines paused or cancelled flights to israel after hamas attacks, iran says israel behind attacks on gas pipelines, gaza journalists flee from israeli fire, what’s troubling brazil-israel ties unpacking a love-hate relationship.

The war has significantly affected Israeli tourism and flights. Yet, things are beginning to change.

Which airlines have resumed flights to Israel?

United Airlines announced on Wednesday last week that it will begin flights to Israel again from March, becoming the first United States carrier to resume flights after suspensions at the start of the war.

United plans initial flights to Tel Aviv from New York and New Jersey in the US on March 2 and 4, with a goal of having daily non-stop service restored from March 6. The carrier said in a news release that it had undertaken a detailed safety analysis before making this decision.

British Airways, which used to operate two flights between the United Kingdom and Israel daily, will resume operations on April 1, operating one flight daily for four days a week.

German airline Lufthansa, Switzerland’s flag carrier Swiss and Austrian flag carrier Austrian Airlines resumed flights to Tel Aviv on January 8. Meanwhile, Spanish airline Air Europa resumed flights to Tel Aviv on February 19. The Greek and French flag carriers, Aegean and Air France, both restarted flights to Tel Aviv in January.

Italy’s ITA Airways will resume flights between Tel Aviv and Rome from March 1, starting with three return trips weekly.

Brussels Airlines, the Belgian carrier, also announced on Wednesday last week that it will resume flights from March 24, with three flights per week from Brussels to Tel Aviv.

The Israel Airports Authority (IAA) also announced that the US-based Delta Air Lines will resume flights to Israel in May. Delta has not officially confirmed this yet, but the last update from the carrier said that flights will be suspended between New York and Israel until April 30.

Still, that’s only a fraction of the flights Israel used to attract before the war.

El Al

Which airlines do not plan to resume flights to Israel any time soon?

American Airlines has halted flights until October 28. Emirates, Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines have also suspended flights to Israel until further notice.

TAP Air Portugal has suspended flights to and from Tel Aviv indefinitely, while Finland’s flag carrier, Finnair, announced it had cancelled its flights to Tel Aviv until October 29. Icelandair has cancelled flights to Tel Aviv, without any further update on its website.

Bulgaria Air cancelled all flights to and from Tel Aviv, also without providing details about a timeline to restart operations.

How has the war affected air travel in Israel?

The number of international travellers arriving in Israel by air rose from 19.2 million in 2022 to 21.1 million in 2023, the IAA reported on January 21.

In November 2023, however, the number of aircraft arriving at Ben Gurion International Airport was 68 percent lower than the same month the year before.

INTERACTIVE-ben_gurion

Fattal said that while 250 airlines had been operating in and out of Israel before October 7, the number dipped to just seven last December. It has since crawled back up to 45.

In the three-month period from October 7, 900,000 tourists had been expected to visit Israel. However, the Israeli daily Calcalist reported that only 190,000 people had actually visited.

Prior to October 7, more than 300,000 people visited Israel every month. In November 2023, that figure reportedly dropped to 39,000.

The number of travellers using Ben Gurion airport in November 2023 was 78 percent lower than in November 2022.

INTERACTIVE-ben_gurion-passengers

The tourism industry in Israel accounted for 2.6 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, before falling to 1.1 percent in 2021. Both foreign and domestic tourism in Israel have flatlined since the start of the war.

Which airlines have continued to fly to Israel throughout the war?

In December, when only seven carriers were flying to Israel, around 80 percent of passengers were carried by Israel’s national carrier, El Al, followed by smaller Israeli carrier Israir at 10 percent and FlyDubai at 3.2 percent.

With almost all airlines suspending and cancelling flights after October 7, El Al saw a 32.5 percent rise in passenger numbers to 5.5 million for 2023 at Ben Gurion airport, which has continued to operate throughout the war.

As Hungry Gazans Crowd an Aid Convoy, a Crush of Bodies, Israeli Gunshots and a Deadly Toll

Palestinian and Israeli officials offered differing accounts of a deadly scene in northern Gaza, in which local health officials said more than 100 people were killed.

By Hiba Yazbek and Aaron Boxerman

Israeli forces opened fire on Thursday as a crowd gathered near a convoy of aid trucks in Gaza City in a chaotic scene in which scores were killed and injured, according to Gazan officials and the Israeli military, which attributed most of the deaths to a stampede.

Although officials from both sides offered differing accounts, the deaths of so many people who were surrounding a convoy carrying food in a part of Gaza where starvation is rampant reflected the desperation and spiraling lawlessness in the territory following Israel’s ground invasion and threatened to derail ongoing cease-fire talks.

The Gazan health ministry said in a statement that Israeli forces had killed more than 100 people and had injured 700 others in a “massacre,” as they waited for food from the convoy.

The latest bloodshed came as Gaza’s health officials reported that the death toll from the war had risen above 30,000, a grim milestone that intensified pressure on Israel to end its military offensive.

I.D.F. Videos Add to Confusion Over Gazans Killed at Aid Site

The israeli military released a heavily edited video to deflect blame, but the footage did little to clear up what led to mass casualties as people crowded around food aid trucks in northern gaza..

Thousands of desperately hungry civilians in northern Gaza gathered on the street before dawn on Thursday, hoping to find food on a humanitarian convoy. Instead, hundreds were killed and injured trying to get aid from the trucks, according to Gazan health officials. Local hospital staff said scores were killed or wounded by gunfire. The Israel Defense Forces claim that most of the victims were trampled or run over by vehicles, and that their soldiers only fired at a group of people who were threatening their forces. Israeli officials declined to provide unedited footage of the incident. The fragments of drone footage they released only add to the confusion around the series of events that killed and wounded so many Gazans. I.D.F. footage shows hundreds of civilians surrounding aid trucks on the coastal Al-Rashid Road in Gaza City. Throngs of people crowd around each truck, hoping to catch bags of food as they are tossed off the back. At one point, people in the crowd suddenly appear to panic and run in multiple directions. The I.D.F. says that this footage shows a mass stampede where Gazans are trampled, but the quality and short length of the clips makes it difficult to confirm these claims. Another clip in the I.D.F. footage shows two Israeli tanks a quarter-mile down the road and at least a dozen bodies lying nearby. The video doesn’t show the events that caused the casualties, but several people can be seen crawling and ducking for cover. Other video, filmed from a side street by an Al Jazeera camera crew, helps fill in some of the gaps about what unfolded on the ground. It captures shots fired as crowds of people scatter and take cover. It is not clear when this footage was filmed in relation to the I.D.F. drone video, but what is clearly visible is tracer ammunition, a specialized type of projectile that ignites to illuminate its path, which helps troops fine-tune their targeting. The source of the fire is not captured in the footage, but the trajectory shows it’s coming from the direction where Israeli military vehicles are positioned, just a half-mile away.

An Israeli military spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said that Israeli soldiers fired warning shots in the air before firing “only in face of danger when the mob moved in a manner which endangered them.”

“We did not fire on those seeking aid, despite the accusations,” he said in a televised briefing. “We did not fire on the humanitarian convoy, either from the air or the land. We secured it so it could reach northern Gaza.”

Gazans, especially in the north, have become increasingly desperate for food as the United Nations and other relief groups have struggled to deliver supplies amid ongoing hostilities and widespread destruction, the Israeli military’s refusal to facilitate many aid deliveries and the breakdown of order inside Gaza. The health ministry in Gaza said on Thursday that 700,000 people in the north were suffering from starvation.

Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza City received the bodies of 12 gunshot victims, and around 100 people with gunshot wounds were brought there for treatment, according to its director, Hussam Abu Safiya.

The Gazan health ministry said that the death toll was expected to rise as wounded Palestinians also arrived at Al-Shifa Hospital, where medical workers were “unable to deal with the volume and type of injuries” amid a lack of supplies and staff.

A doctor who went to the scene, Yehia Al Masri, said he saw dozens of people with gunshot wounds, including to the head, neck and groin, as well as sacks of flour soaked in blood. He said he also saw the bodies of people who appeared to have died in a stampede or to have been hit by aid trucks.

Dr. Al Masri said he used ropes, string, pieces of wood and shreds of clothing to bind people’s wounds. Others loaded injured victims into cars or carts and then tried to get flour off the trucks before heading to the hospital.

“The soul is exchanged for a flour sack,” Dr. Al Masri said, adding: “We have reached famine, and the situation is beyond description.”

According to one Israeli military official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, about 30 trucks carrying humanitarian aid had traveled from the Kerem Shalom crossing between southern Israel and Gaza along a coastal road into northern Gaza.

As the trucks neared Gaza City at around 4:45 a.m., thousands of people surrounded the vehicles in an attempt to seize supplies, leading to a stampede in which dozens were injured and killed, the official said. Some were run over by aid trucks as the drivers sought to extricate themselves, said the official, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity to discuss a matter under investigation.

The official said that several hundred yards south — at the tail end of the convoy — dozens of civilians who had rushed trucks in the area then approached Israeli troops and a tank securing the road, prompting them to open fire. He did not elaborate on whether any people were killed or injured in the shooting and declined to provide a precise timeline.

The Israeli military released a drone video, which it edited, that showed hundreds of people crowding around and climbing on top of aid trucks along Al-Rashid Road in southwestern Gaza City. At one point in the footage, people start running, with some crawling behind walls and appearing to take cover.

After a cut in the video, at least a dozen people can be seen on the ground; it is not clear whether they are injured or dead. During the panic, a few people appear to be struck by the aid trucks. Two Israeli military vehicles are also visible at the scene.

President Biden said on Thursday that while he was still learning the details of what had happened, he believed the bloodshed would complicate negotiations aimed at reaching a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.

“I know it will,” he told reporters in Washington, as he backed away from his prediction earlier in the week that an agreement could be in place by Monday. “Probably not by Monday, but I’m hopeful,” he told reporters before departing for Brownsville, Texas.

Gaza has been under an almost complete siege since Hamas and its allies attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing about 1,200 people and taking more than 250 others back to Gaza as hostages, according to Israeli officials.

It was unclear who was overseeing the convoy. Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the main U.N. aid group that serves Palestinians, said that no U.N. agency was involved and the Israeli military said the aid was to be distributed by “private contractors.”

Lawlessness is rampant in many parts of northern and southern Gaza, residents and aid officials say, with no authority emerging to take charge of public order after Israel’s ouster of Hamas forces in those areas.

The World Food Program said last week that it has paused food deliveries to northern Gaza because of the challenges of safely delivering aid there.

Mr. Lazzarini said on Sunday that UNRWA, whose funding has been suspended by several donor nations since the U.N. launched an investigation into about a dozen employees accused of participating in the Oct. 7 attacks, was last able to deliver aid to northern Gaza over a month ago.

In recent weeks, large crowds of Gazans have repeatedly rushed aid convoys, and seized supplies, occasionally while armed. Some Gazan police officers have refused to guard the convoys because they fear their affiliation with the Hamas-run government makes them targets of Israeli troops, Western officials say.

A Hamas official, Izzat Al-Rishq, blamed Israel for the deaths and said that Hamas would not allow negotiations aimed at stopping the war to be used as “a cover for the enemy’s continued crimes against our people in the Gaza Strip.”

The Palestinian Authority, which controls parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, called the deaths a “heinous act” by Israeli forces and demanded that the international community, especially Israel’s chief ally, the United States, intervene to stop Israel’s offensive.

Matthew Miller, a State Department spokesman, said the United States was “urgently seeking additional information on exactly what took place” and had been in touch with the Israeli government since early Thursday about its investigation into the deaths.

“We will be monitoring that investigation closely and pressing for answers,” he said.

International pressure has been mounting on Israel to stop its military invasion. Earlier on Thursday, Volker Türk, the U.N.’s high commissioner for human rights, denounced the Israeli offensive in especially forceful remarks to the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

He said the United Nations estimates that 100,000 Palestinians have been killed, injured or are missing. He also described the unprecedented number of deaths of U.N. employees and journalists and said that some 17,000 Palestinian children had been orphaned or separated from their families.

“There appear to be no bounds to, no words to capture, the horrors that are unfolding before our eyes in Gaza,” Mr. Türk said. “This is carnage.”

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Meirav Eilon Shahar, called Mr. Türk’s remarks “an affront” to the victims of the Oct. 7 attack.

Ms. Eilon Shahar said that the United Nations had ignored Israel’s security concerns for years, and she noted that Mr. Türk’s statement did not mention the hundreds of Israelis killed in attacks before and after Oct. 7.

“Do they not matter?” she asked.

Ms. Eilon Shahar defended Israel’s campaign, saying its approach to dealing with terrorist groups that use civilians as human shields was consistent with international law.

Turning to acknowledge two former hostages behind her, Aviva Siegel and Raz Ben-Ami, whose husbands are still being held in Gaza, she said that Mr. Türk had reduced them to “a mere footnote” in the council’s discourse.

News and Analysis

Harrowing pictures of a 10-year-old boy from his last days at a clinic in the city of Rafah have quickly made him the face of starvation in Gaza . Aid groups have warned that deaths from malnutrition-related causes in the territory have only just begun.

A day after President Biden announced plans  for maritime aid delivery to Gaza , European leaders said they would send aid by ship to the territory . But aid groups and Gaza officials criticized shipments by air or sea as too cumbersome.

A meeting  between Benny Gantz, an Israeli cabinet member and a top political rival of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s, and Britain’s foreign secretary, David Cameron, spoke to the peculiar domestic politics  in the two countries and stressed the frustration of Israel's allies.

Shifting Ties: Israel’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish minority has long lived apart from the nation’s secular mainstream, but the war in Gaza has both widened that divide and in some ways helped to bridge it .

A Winding Path: The U.S. airman who lit himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington to protest the war had left an isolated Christian community for the Air Force before turning to leftist and anarchist activism .

Setting Their Sights on Politics: Inspired by the unity they experienced in the military, thousands of Israeli reservists returning from the front line in Gaza are organizing for political change .

In the West Bank: Right-wing ministers in the Israeli government are agitating to settle more land in the occupied West Bank. Homesh, a re-established settlement, symbolizes their resolve .
