What is Anastasia about?

Orphaned at a young age and unable to remember her parents or family, feisty street sweeper Anya falls in with charismatic conmen Vlad and Dmitry who, seeing an opportunity they can't miss, train her in the ways of the aristocracy, in a style similar to Eliza in My Fair Lady. They have their sights set on Paris, where the Dowager Empress resides. Mother of the overthrown Tsar Nicholas II and one of the only surviving Romanovs after the Russian Revolution, the Dowager Empress holds out hope that her long-lost granddaughter Anastasia survived the terrible revolt.

Vlad and Dmitry, realising Anya is the spitting image of Anastasia, convince her to sneak out of Russia with them to meet the Empress and claim their reward. Yet along with their grand adventure, a budding romance blossoms between our heroine and the dashing young Dmitry, while the mystery of her birth unravels...

Review: ANASTASIA at the National Arts Centre

Although there is nothing earth shattering about Anastasia, the scenery, costumes, and cast performances are all excellent reasons to see the show during its national tour stop in Ottawa.

Broadway Across Canada's presentation of Anastasia , the musical inspired by the 1997 animated film of the same name, has finally arrived in Ottawa after a Covid-related postponement last April. The crowd was visibly excited on opening night, especially the children in the audience. Anastasia starts out dark; it is a turbulent time in history, after all. After the Romanov family is assassinated - this is implied, rather than directly shown, but may still be scary for the littlest viewers - the story jumps ahead to 1927.

Review: ANASTASIA at the National Arts Centre

We meet Anya ( Veronica Stern ), now a young woman, suffering from amnesia and longing to find her family. Through hazy dreams, she has come to believe her grandmother lives in Paris. Meanwhile, there is a rumour on the streets of Saint Petersburg that Anastasia Romanov has survived the assassination. Dmitry (Willem Butler), a con artist, and Vlad ( Bryan Seastrom ), a fake ex-aristocrat, convince Anya to help conduct a scheme that will lead the trio out of poverty-stricken Russia to Paris, where the Dowager Empress ( Gerri Weagraff ) now lives. The plan is that, once Dmitry and Vlad present Anya to the Dowager as her long-lost Anastasia, Anya will live happily ever after, and her cohorts will reap the reward money. As she is educated on the Romanov family history and noble mannerisms, Anya begins to believe that she may, in truth, be Anastasia. Complicating matters, Anya comes to the attention of the Russian army and Gleb ( Ben Edquist ), a Bolshevik soldier, is instructed to pursue her and either bring her back to Russia or kill her.

Review: ANASTASIA at the National Arts Centre

Stern, making her National Tour debut, is one of BroadwayWorld's "People to Watch in 2022" and it is easy to see why. She gave a compelling performance as Anya, bringing her character's attributes to the forefront - insecurity, fear, strength, and resilience. Edquist gave an impressive performance as the conflicted soldier, sworn to do his duty but unsure that he can carry out the orders.

Seastrom, together with Madeline Raube as Countess Lily, were mainly used as comic relief, but played it up to the audience, who enjoyed every moment. I loved watching Raube use her body to convey her character, something that I was perhaps more aware of than the average viewer, thanks to our pre-show discussion . Act II's "Land of Yesterday" enabled Raube to really showcase her skills and was a highlight of the show for me.

A supporting character that really stood out to me was Amin Fuson as the ill-fated Count Ipolitov. His rendition of "Stay, I Pray You" was heartfelt and allowed him to shine. Anastasia is Fuson's professional debut and, if his performance here is anything to judge by, he should have a long and successful career ahead.

Review: ANASTASIA at the National Arts Centre

The Swan Lake ballet performance was wonderfully executed. Some of the ensemble have extensive ballet training and they were able to put their talent on full display. I loved that they were able to take their bows after the ballet number and bask in the well-deserved applause from the audience.

Anastasia has liberally borrowed ideas from some of the best-known and loved musicals. For example, Dmitry and Vlad's grooming of Anya to pass her off as nobility is heavily reminiscent of My Fair Lady . Gleb's character bears many similarities to that of Les Misérables' Javert but is, regretfully, not nearly as flushed out. The music box as a connection to the past, playing an instrumental version of the recurring theme song is a subtle nod to The Phantom of the Opera . Although it shares elements with some of those great musicals, Anastasia doesn't feel like it has quite the same staying power as its inspiration.

Where Anastasia really excels is in its lavish costumes ( Linda Cho ) and scenery ( Alexander Dodge ). The scenic design was superbly done, incorporating screens in an unobtrusive, seamless way so that, at times, it was difficult to discern what was on the screens and what was an actual stage prop. It was also used to extend the stage and even brought the audience to the top of the Eiffel Tower. In the first act, the screens were also used brilliantly to show the army descending on the palace. My favourite part of the show incorporated all the best elements of the musical. In "Once Upon a December", the costumes, set and stage design come together with the cast's vocals, led by Stern, to create a beautifully poignant, haunting, and magical scene.

Review: ANASTASIA at the National Arts Centre

Although there may be nothing earth shattering about Anastasia , the scenery, costumes, and cast performances are all excellent reasons to see the show during its national tour stop in Ottawa. Its overarching themes of the importance of family and finding oneself are relatable and appealing to all ages and the musical is visually stunning. You can be part of the journey to the past with Anastasia at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa through September 4, 2022. Click here for more information or to purchase tickets.

ON ANASTASIA, AMNESIA, AND ANESTHESIA

First came the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, who was murdered in 1918 just after the Bolshevik Revolution, most likely by Vladimir Lenin’s secret police. Then came the rumors that she was still alive. Then came the imposters, keeping alive one of the most popular historical mysteries of the 20th century. Although it has been proven through DNA testing of bodies discovered in a mass grave that Anastasia was indeed killed, the story of What if she did survive? remains a popular notion in books and films.

national tour of anastasia

In 1997, a very decent movie — 20th Century Fox’s first animated film — came along retelling the story of Anastasia, beginning with her childhood in 1916 Russia. In the musical film, Rasputin curses the Romanovs, and little Anastasia is separated from her grandmother, the Dowager Empress. After growing up in an orphanage, she emerges as a young woman called Anya. The amnesiac Anya, heir to the Romanov fortune, encounters entrepreneurs who seek an Anastasia look-alike in hopes of collecting a reward in Paris from the aged Dowager Empress. Despite demonic interference from Rasputin, the three travel to Paris where another problem awaits: the Dowager Empress is now skeptical of the parade of impostors.

When the composing team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens took some of their whimsical tunes to Broadway, they brought on their Ragtime co-creator Terrence McNally to adapt the screenplay. He kept the story about the same, including the dashing rapscallion love interest, Dmitry, but dropped the sneering villain, his sorcery and the animal sidekick, a talking bat. He even added some moments that steer this family-oriented musical into some grisly territory (the new villain, Gleb, is a general for the Bolsheviks who receives orders to kill Anya), but the National Tour of the Broadway production (which closed last March 31 after 808 performances) proves that they’re mere stabs at maturity because everything else is so broadly convivial, and, well, cartoonish. And yet — and this is a big “yet” — even this so-so musical outshines nearly all of the crap parading as the Best of Broadway. It’s clear that this kind of anesthesia is just swell to patrons who are sick of the nightly news.

national tour of anastasia

Ahrens and Flaherty have kept the good earworm songs from the film: “Once Upon a December” and “Journey to the Past” (which is now the big Act I closer), and added some fairly good ones: The anthem “The Neva Flows” and a mournful last goodbye to the motherland, “Stay, I Pray You” (which made me miss “Anatevka” from Fiddler on the Roof more than said motherland). The rest is fairly forgettable filler.

national tour of anastasia

One of the musical’s redeeming qualities is a comical couple with a past: con man Vlad (Dmitry’s partner-in-crime) and Countess Lily, who looks after the Dowager Empress in Paris. The physical comedy and their raunchy duet, “The Countess and the Common Man,” easily receives the biggest laughs and applause of the night. The problem is that their joviality is incongruous with the period drama (McNally is far more successful with comedy than drama anyway).

national tour of anastasia

Director Darko Tresnjak seems to have gotten what he wanted out of the material, which lies in a sort of limbo between source material and alterations, and between broad comedy and historical drama. In theory, the musical has every element of a successful show: A talented and abundant cast of more than two dozen actors; Linda Cho’s gorgeous Tony-winning period costumes, Peggy Hickey’s choreography, neatly shifting gears from elegant ballroom dancing to the Swan Lake ballet to excessively slapstick maneuvers; Aaron Rhyne’s brilliantly beautiful projections (which, situated behind the 3-D proscenium set nonetheless look like wallpaper on my laptop); and a pre-existing property with a built-in audience.

national tour of anastasia

In execution, however, the book’s odd tonal shifts and shoulder-shrugging score keep this from being a great musical. It’s not a flop but I didn’t flip. (Which doesn’t mean it won’t be stopping in some grand palace near you for years.) But it will always suffer from an identity crisis, just like all of those Anastasia impostors.
