Biscayne National Park is, hands down, one of the most tantalizing and extraordinary national parks in America. While it’s not filled with dirt trails and lush forests, this park still woos travelers with its spectacular underwater treasures.

As a matter of fact, 95% of this national park sits under Florida’s sparkling, crystal clear turquoise water. With its colorful coral reefs, exhilarating outdoor pursuits, and shipwrecks, Biscayne National Park is a veritable ocean playground.

What’s more, this 270-square-mile aquatic paradise has a diverse ecosystem full of uniquely shaped corals and multi-colored fish. Did we mention that it’s home to photogenic lighthouses and miles of beautiful wavy seagrass and mangrove channels?

Brief History of Biscayne Bay

In 1513, Juan Ponce de Leon became the first European to discover the Florida Keys. After the arrival of the other Spanish conquistadors and explorers later in the 1500s, the Florida area came under the Spanish rule.

From the 1500s to the 20th century, Spanish fleets sailed regularly past the keys and were usually caught in massive hurricanes. There were at least  two 18th-century ships from Spain wrecked in the national park area.

In the 1890, as modern communities expanded, developers looked into Key Biscayne’s undeveloped areas for new projects. A bustling industrial seaport was then, in 1962, proposed for Biscayne Bay’s mainland shores.

Thankfully, there were conservationists who succeeded in fighting to preserve the bay. In 1968, the bay was designated a national monument. A few years later, in 1974, Biscayne Bay was redesignated as a national park.

How to get to biscayne national park.

The Dante Fascell Visitor Center, situated in Homestead, is the main access to the national park. From Downtown Miami, you can reach this gateway in 90 minutes or less. Just hit Exit 6/Speedway Boulevard and drive left on Southwest 328th Street.

You may also use Google Maps or any other navigational apps to reach the visitor center.

Besides the Dante Fascell Visitor Center, there are other gateways and marinas to the park, including Crandon and Homestead Bayfront.

Nearby Marinas and Boat Launches

Even though it has a paddleboard, canoe, and kayak launch, there are no boat ramps or marinas at the Dante Fascell Visitor Center.

However, you may launch boats from a number of nearby access points flowing into the bay, including:

Best Time to Visit Biscayne National Park

The best time to visit Biscayne National Park is summer when the weather is normally warmer. Furthermore, the seas are calm during these months, meaning it’s ideal for diving and snorkeling.

Still, visitors should be ready for thunderstorms and mosquitoes when visiting the park in summer.

How to Get Around Biscayne National Park

The best way to explore the park is by boat, especially since it’s mostly made up of water. If you have your own boat or vessel, you may explore the park on your own.

We recommend consulting with a ranger first before you venture into this exquisite natural wonder. That way, you’ll know where to go in Biscayne National Park, and ensure that your skills and knowledge are up to the challenge.

Alternatively, you may book a tour through Biscayne National Park Institute , which provides a variety of excursions within the park.

We booked the full-day sailing trip that departs from the Dante Fascell Visitors Center and with favorable weather and wind, were able to visit Boca Chita Key. The trip is very exclusive with only 6 visitors per trip.

How Much Does it Cost to Visit Biscayne National Park?

There’s no admission fee for this national park. There are, however, fees for certain activities and tours within the park. Camping, for one, costs a few bucks per night for each tent on Boca Chita Key and Elliott Key.

Campers with boats that need to be docked will have to pay an overnight fee of $20. Additionally, group camping is available for $30 a night.

While the park itself doesn’t charge admission, you’ll need to book a tour or charter a boat to see the actual park. So actual costs will vary depending on your choices for exploring.

There’s never a dull moment in Biscayne National Park. With an open mind and an adventurous soul, you can experience a world of adventures both in water and on land in this park.

Snorkeling in Biscayne National Park

One of the most popular and top activities is to go snorkeling in Biscayne National Park. With the park being located at the starting point of the Great Florida Barrier Reef, there is no mystery about this favored activity.

You can expect to see healthy coral, plenty of fish species, and plenty of other marine critters when you hop in the protected waters of Biscayne Bay.

While the reefs here don’t compare to the ones we’ve seen in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, there is something special about experiencing the marine life that abounds in the only living reef off the coast of the USA.

Explore the Maritime Heritage Trail

The Maritime Heritage Trail is, no doubt, the national park’s undisputed crown jewel. Ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling, this underwater paradise is home to some of the numerous shipwrecks in Biscayne National Park.

There are five wrecks that span almost a century and a wide range of vessel types and sizes along this trail.

Take a Reef Cruise

Enjoying a reef cruise is one of the best and most fascinating ways to visit this national park. On this cruise, you’ll come in contact with over 320 kinds of fish, spiny lobsters, crabs, and shrimp.

Plus, you’ll spot tons of birds as you take this cruise, including cormorants and herons.

Boats depart from Convoy Point, and you’ll get an insightful orientation to the extraordinary fauna and flora of the bay before leaving.

There’s also a glass-bottom boat tour that lets you get a peek into the underwater world without ever getting wet.

Visit the Jones Family Historic District and Lagoon

Want to add a hint of history to your nature trip in Biscayne National Park? Then don’t forget to experience a kayaking escape on the Jones Family Historic District and Lagoon.

The area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it an amazing pit stop for history buffs. The area is made up of Totten Key and Porgy Key, in which the Jones family grew key limes and pineapples in the 19th century.

Stop by the Dante Fascell Visitor Center

Spend a few hours at this visitors’ center, and watch a short film that will take you on an eye-opening virtual journey through the national park. Afterward, appreciate the interpretive exhibits displayed inside the visitors’ center.

Before leaving the area, pause at Dante Fascell Gallery, and watch a variety of striking contemporary art.

Explore Boca Chita Key

No list of the best things to do in Biscayne National Park is complete without a tour of Boca Chita. Led by a park naturalist, this three-hour boat tour lets you climb the historic lighthouse of the island.

On a clear day, you’ll see the striking skyline of Miami from this lighthouse. While it has never been a working lighthouse, this man-made attraction is still a sight to behold.

You’ll learn more about the history of this lighthouse and island through the knowledgeable park rangers.

Kayaking in Biscayne National Park

Paddlers will have ample opportunities to explore and see the mangrove shoreline along Biscayne mainland. You can rent a kayak or canoe by the national park concessioner. Don’t forget to drop by the visitor center for suggested routes and weather conditions.

That said, kayaking from the mainland to either Elliot Key or Boca Chita Key should not be attempted. If you wish to kayak around these islands, you’ll need to book a tour that visits them with a kayaking option.

Enjoy a SUP Adventure

If you’ve booked a sailing or boat trip out to either Boca Chita Key or Elliot Key, then you’ll likely have the opportunity to hop on a SUP board. This is a great way to see the reef and get up close to the mangroves in protected waters.

We find using SUP boards to be more intimate than a kayak and you can also snorkel from them! Just be sure to hang onto the tether while swimming so your board doesn’t blow away.

Hiking the Trails

Even with its limited land area, the park does have a few trails for those who want to stretch their legs. Hiking trails within the park include the Jetty Trail, Adams Key Loop, Elliott Key Loop, Spite Highway Trail, and Boca Chita Key Loop.

You’re not going to put serious miles under you on any of these trails, so don’t expect that. However, it’s a great way to explore the islands looking for interesting flora and fauna while seeking unique vantage points.

Where to Stay in Biscayne National Park

Biscayne National Park has a couple of excellent campgrounds. One is located on Boca Chita, a popular island destination for day trips. The other sits on the park’s largest island, Elliot Key.

You’ll have to shell out $25 a night on any of the park’s campgrounds. The fee includes boat docking and camping. Both campgrounds are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Although it has restrooms, there’s no shower or sink in Boca Chita Key’s campground. Also, there’s no drinking water available on this island. So, make sure to bring plenty of drinking water on your camping trip.

On the bright side, the campground is equipped with picnic tables and grills. But you’ll need to bring all of your own food and supplies to the island. With that in mind, be sure to pack out every single thing you pack in. Including your garbage. Leave nothing behind.

Meanwhile, Elliot Key’s campground has scores of convenient amenities. Not only does it offer drinking water, but it also has cold water showers, grills, picnic tables, and restrooms.

Where to Stay Near the National Park

Not fond of camping? Guess what? There are plenty of non-tented accommodation options near the park, ranging from upscale hotels to budget-friendly inns.

Fury Water Adventures does not operate in unsafe weather conditions, but a light rain shower is not a deterrent. The Captain will assess the weather and should the Captain determine that the conditions are unsafe to run the tour, the tour may be postponed or it will be canceled. If a trip is canceled by Fury Water Adventures for any reason, every effort will be made to reschedule the trip during your stay in Key West. If you are unable to reschedule, you will have the option of receiving a voucher for a future trip or receiving a full refund. Every effort will be made to run tours, as advertised. Should Fury have to amend or alter your tour due to extraneous circumstances, tickets remain non-refundable on tours taken.

All cancellations must be made at least 24 hours prior to your trip’s scheduled departure time. To place a cancellation, please call 1-888-976-0899 or email [email protected] and refer to the confirmation number at the top of your confirmation document. Failure to place a cancellation at least 24 hours in advance will result in your credit card being charged the full amount of the reserved. No refunds will be issued for reservations cancelled within 24 hours of departure, unless reservation refund protection was purchased. Please note that failure to show for the reserved trip  without cancellation will result in no refund. If a trip is cancelled by Fury Water Adventures® for any reason, every effort will be made to reschedule the trip during your stay in Key West. If you are unable to reschedule, you will have the option of receiving a voucher for a future trip or receiving a refund.

Fury has a 24 hour notice cancellation policy to receive a refund. Guests can purchase Reservation Refund Protection for a 10% fee to be eligible to cancel or transfer tickets up to 1 hour prior to their scheduled departure. All you have to do is email a request to [email protected] no later than 1 hour in advance of your reservation time.

Reservation refund protection fees are 100% non-refundable in the event of any cancellation or reservation change.

No, we do not provide parking at any of our check in locations, but you can use street parking, pay to park lots or parking garages.

Most Fury tours will require the minor guest’s  natural parent be present at check in to sign them in. Please call 888-976-0899 for specific policy details for your preferred tour.

Fury allows service animals only. A service animal is any dog that has been trained to perform tasks to benefit an individual.  The work performed must be directly related to the individuals disability.  According the ADA service animals for emotional support, therapy, comfort or companionship are not considered service animals.

The guest requiring the service animal must be in possession of the animal at all times. Due to the nature of Fury tours,  guest and service animal  may  be required to remain on the boat for the entirety of the tour . This is to ensure the guest’s safety as well as that of the service animal, Key West wildlife, other guests, captain and crew.

Overall rating

We had to visit Biscayne National Park while in Miami. If you don't have your own boat, this non-profit is your only way to see the park (unless you just stay on the coastline, but that sounds boring). This is one of the best tours we've ever done. We did the Sail, Paddle, and Snorkel tour which was all day (from 10-4). Our tour guide Jesse was awesome. He had so many facts and stories about the park and the history of the land. I was a little nervous doing a group tour during Covid-19 (we were there in December), but they are doing a great job. Masks are required at all times unless you're snorkeling. Our group only had 4 other people in it. Plus you're outside with lots of wind. Paddling and snorkeling through the mangroves was so much fun. We even got to see a baby blacktip shark in the lagoon. I didn't have high expectations for this national park, but it ended up being an amazing day. They have several tour options so there's something for everyone!

Biscayne has been on my NP bucketlist for awhile because it is one of only 4 NPs that are technically underwater! Sadly, on this visit at least, I didn't get to do much underwater exploration, but I did get to go on a 3hr tour (yes Gilligan's Island style w/o the being marooned on a desert island portion) out to Boca Chita. I did the 1:30pm tour and sadly we didn't see very much wildlife (probably way too hot, so I rec doing one of the earlier tours). The 3hrs is basically 1hr to get to Boca Chita and hour on Boca Chita and an hour back. We had a great guide on the boat to give us a great history of the Park, fun facts about the marine life and geographical features, and a brief history of the little isle of Boca Chita & its famous lighthouse. You can go up to the lighthouse and get some fantastic panoramic views and even see the downtown Miami skyline on a clear day. There is a little swimming beach, but it is super shallow and there is a strong current when the tide is coming in. Also, bring lots and lots and lots of bug repellant because they are FIERCE here! The hour on the island goes fast so I recommend doing the lighthouse first and then chilling out in the water. With tax the boat tour comes out to about $40. The visitor center is worth exploring as they have some neat wreck artifacts and you can just vegge on the rocking chairs on the upper deck before/after your tour. This was an excellent tour by the local Park Ranger Gary Bremen, as well as the captain of the boat. The Ranger knew his stuff and shared alot of information with us! I could tell that he really enjoyed his job and has the passion for it. Probably the best park ranger I have ever met. The captain of the boat was great as well and made us feel like part of his family. The only complaint I have is that I wish we had more time on the island to really get to explore the area. Overall one of our better experiences on this vacation!

Basically, the glass bottom boat tours by the park rangers will let you observe coral beds and fishes near the coast line as well as potential dolphins. We were lucky and were able to spot a few dolphins. Overall, this was a great tour and our ranger gave a great talk.

Biscayne National Park is an absolutely incredible place. Not only is it one of the more unique areas in Florida, but it’s also one of our most unique National Parks.

Biscayne is 95% underwater, meaning you may wish to go below the surface to truly experience it. Even if you want to stay dry, head out on a boat into the Bay for a wonderful trip.

In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about visiting Biscayne National Park . This includes maps, trails, things to do, camping, where to stay, what to pack, and more.

Fun Facts About Biscayne National Park

• The park protects 172,971 acres. About 95% of that is water.
• Biscayne National Park was established on June 28, 1980. First, it became Biscayne National Monument on October 18, 1968.
• The shore near the Dante Fascell Visitor Center includes wild mangrove trees. This stretch is the longest on the Eastern United States coast.
• Elliott Key, the park’s largest island, is the northmost island in the Florida Keys. The Keys are formed from fossilized coral reefs rather than traditional islands of sand and coral, making them stand out as their own group of islands.

Why is Biscayne a National Park?

According to the Foundation document, the purpose of Biscayne National Park is:

“…to preserve and protect for the education, inspiration, recreation, and enjoyment of present and future generations a rare combination of terrestrial, marine, and amphibious life in a tropical setting of great natural beauty…”

When to Visit Biscayne National Park

The best time to visit Biscayne National Park is winter or spring (November to May) to avoid hurricane season. It also rains less this time of year.

Visiting Biscayne National Park in the Winter

From December to February, you’ll find the best weather in Biscayne National Park. You’ll find the park to be busy, but not as busy as the spring. The weather is perfectly mild with little precipitation.

Visiting Biscayne National Park in the Spring

While warmer than winter, spring is still pleasant and not nearly as hot as the Florida summer. Rain is a bit more common than in the winter. Spring is also the busiest in terms of tourism, so plan ahead. You’ll want to reserve any tours and hotel rooms in advance to ensure you’re able to enjoy the area.

Visiting Biscayne National Park in the Summer

June through August is my least favorite time to be in Florida. In fact, I haven’t returned to Florida (where I grew up) in the summer since I moved away in 2014. This time of year, you’ll experience the warmest weather, the most precipitation, and the highest humidity. This is also prime hurricane season. With all of that in mind, lodging costs are lower this time of year, so consider that if you’re traveling on a budget.

Drink lots of water on days with a high heat index.

Visiting Biscayne National Park in the Fall

Similar to the summer months, September through November is hot, humid, and damp. You can expect warm temperatures and quite a lot of rain. Therefore, crowds are light and accommodation prices may be cheaper.

Getting There and Getting Around

How to Get to Biscayne National Park

The main access to Biscayne National Park is located at the Dante Fascell Visitor Center in Homestead. The address for the visitor center is 9700 SW 328th Street, Sir Lancelot Jones Way, Homestead, FL 33033. Some other access points include various marinas such as Homestead Bayfront or Crandon, among others.

While the visitor center and the surrounding Convoy Point area close ( check here for hours ), the park waters are open 24/7.

Getting Around

Since the park is mostly water, the best way to access it is via boat. You can book tours through various concessionaires and park partners. I highly recommend the Biscayne Institute.

Furthermore, if you have your own vessel you can explore on your own. I’d recommend speaking with a park ranger first to decide where to go and ensure your knowledge and skills are up to the challenge.

To reach the visitor center from Miami, I highly recommend renting a car. There is no public transportation.

How Much Does Biscayne National Park Cost?

There is no fee for visiting Biscayne National Park. However, that doesn’t mean everything in the park is free. If you’re interested in tours, you will have to pay.

All boat trips in Biscayne National Park are offered by their non-profit partner, the Biscayne National Park Institute . Trips include snorkeling, diving, paddle-boarding, history tours, and so much more.

America the Beautiful Passes

If you’re visiting other national parks in the area, the smartest thing to do is  purchase an America the Beautiful Pass . Annual passes cost $80 and will admit everyone in the vehicle at most national parks around the country . If you’re currently serving in the United States military, have volunteered for a national park, are in fourth grade, or have a permanent disability, you may be eligible for one of the free passes issued by the National Park Service. Lastly, there is an annual pass for seniors 62 and older for $20. Seniors are also able to purchase a lifetime pass for $80.

Other national parks in Florida that charge an entrance fee include Canaveral National Seashore, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, Dry Tortugas National Park , Everglades National Park , and Gulf Islands National Seashore.

How Much Time Should I Spend Visiting Biscayne National Park?

One Day in Biscayne National Park

Some highlights of Biscayne National Park can easily be seen in one day thanks to a variety of tours offered. That being said, there is plenty to see if you’re interested in spending more time in the area.

For our one day in Biscayne, we decided to take a tour that encompassed three of the park’s best activities: snorkeling, boating, and kayaking. We took a leisurely sailboat ride to Adams Key, one of the park’s day-use areas, about five miles from the visitor center.

Once we arrived, we had lunch (which we packed ourselves) before kayaking through the surrounding mangroves. Stand-up paddleboards were also available. While kayaking, we got to see sharks and a little crab swim by our boat.

Finally, our guide found good locations for snorkeling and allowed us to hop in the water and look around before we took the sailboat back to the mainland. If this tour sounds interesting to you, check it out here .

Another popular option if you only have one day is a trip to Boca Chita Key. This is one of the most popular day trips in Biscayne National Park. You’ll take a speed boat to the key, check out the unique lighthouse, and hike the trail. For information on this tour, click here .

Multiple Days in Biscayne National Park

If you have more time, you can spend multiple days visiting Biscayne National Park. There’s a campground on Elliott Key if you love a remote camping experience.

You could also fit in multiple tours, such as the Boca Chita Key tour above along with the sailboat tour or perhaps an all-day snorkeling excursion.

Furthermore, glass-bottom boat tours are offered as well. If you’re in Miami and want to venture south into the park, there are also companies offering tours of the famous Stiltsville.

Camping While Visiting Biscayne National Park

Biscayne National Park is home to two campgrounds. One is on Elliott Key, the largest island in the park. The other is on Boca Chita, one of the most popular islands for day trips.

Both campgrounds charge $25 per night. This includes camping and boat docking. There is a kiosk upon arrival where you can pay (cash only). If you choose to camp in the summer (May 1 to September 30), the fee is waived. Both campgrounds operate on a first-come, first-served basis and no reservations are accepted.

The Elliott Key Campground includes restrooms with sinks (cold water only), picnic tables, grills, cold water showers, and drinking water. It’s recommended to bring your own drinking water in case something goes wrong with the water system on the island.

Boca Chita Key Campground also has restrooms, but there are no sinks or showers. Furthermore, you won’t find any drinking water on the island. It is very important that you bring your own. The campground is also equipped with grills and picnic tables.

Biscayne National Park Hikes

Because the park is 95% water, there are only a few hiking trails.

Jetty Trail

You’ll begin on a boardwalk in front of the visitor center. After walking in front of the marina, you’ll walk the final portion of the trail on a sandy unpaved path. This stretch goes along a thin jetty, providing a great view of the bay and the downtown Miami skyline. It ends at the Colonial Bird Protection Area.

This is the only trail in Biscayne National Park that is located on the mainland. The other four trails are located on the islands.

Difficulty : Easy

Start : In front of the Dante Fascell Visitor Center

Distance (roundtrip) : 1 mile / 1.6 km

Adams Key Loop

This overgrown trail takes you through one of Florida’s hammock habitats. It’s very wooded and can be buggy at any time of year. You won’t get good views of the water due to all of the trees.

Start : Near the two NPS-staff housing units (you can’t miss them).

Distance (roundtrip) : 0.5 mile / 0.8 km

Elliott Key Loop

On this scenic trail, you’ll walk from the Biscayne Bay side of the island over to the Atlantic Ocean side. You’ll see a few informative trail signs along the way to help you learn more about the area.

About halfway, the trail intersects with the Spite Highway Trail. The trail is mostly sandy and flat with a boardwalk on the side by the Atlantic Ocean. Bring bug spray!

Start : This U-shaped trail begins on either side of the harbor.

Distance (one-way) : 1.1 miles / 1.8 km

Spite Highway Trail

While the other four trails in the park are short nature trails, this trail is more of a hiking trail than anything else you’ll find in Biscayne.

The trail stretches the entire length of Elliott Key, the largest island in Biscayne National Park. It’s located about halfway inland and goes through a hardwood forest.

There is no shuttle or boat service to bring you from each end to the other, so you will need to walk the trail twice. It’s mostly flat with sand and dirt along the path.

Start : Walk a portion of the Elliott Key Loop and you’ll see the connection to the Spite Trail about halfway.

Distance (one-way) : 7 miles / 11.2 km

Boca Chita Key Loop

This short nature trail circles a wooded area on Boca Chita Key. Along the way, you’ll find a few interpretive signs. The official trail remains in the wooded area, but there are several informal trails that lead to the water. Most of the trail is flat with a mix of sand and gravel as the terrain.

Start : This U-shaped trail begins on either side of the harbor. Follow the retaining wall to find the most obvious trailhead.

Distance (roundtrip) : 0.6 miles / 1 km

What to Pack for Visiting Biscayne National Park

Packing for a trip to Biscayne can be tricky. Depending on the time of year, temperatures can range from over 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day to 50 degrees once the sun goes down. If you’re visiting in the summer, it may rain every day. Here’s a list of things you may need, with some items varying based on the season you decide to visit.

When visiting someplace new, it’s always fun to read the guidebooks and become more acquainted with the area. Maps are handy, too. I also love to read more about its history. One of my favorites for Biscayne is this book:  Paddling Biscayne and Everglades National Parks . It includes the best areas to travel via kayak or canoe.

General Packing List

• A reusable water bottle
• Moisture-wicking Layers: You’ll want  short-  and  long-sleeve  shirts to wear underneath your jacket. In the summer, you may also want a  tank top . Choose polyester over cotton.
• Jacket: I always have a  packable down  with me on trips. I also love  this new jacket I got a few months ago, as it’s very light yet warm. Synthetic  is a good alternative to down if you’re worried about rain or snow.
• Hiking Pants or Shorts: My favorite hiking pants can be found  here . As a taller woman, I also love  Columbia’s pants  because they offer long sizes.
• Hat: Depending on the season, you’ll need a  winter hat  or  summer hat .
• Gloves or Mittens: Gloves  are critical if you’re visiting in the winter.
• Wool Socks: Smartwool  is my favorite brand for wool socks. Make sure to get wool so your feet stay warm and dry.
• Camera: I had my trusty  Canon Rebel T5i , my  Canon Powershot SX620 , and a  GoPro with me on my most recent trip to the Everglades.
• Tripod: If you’re hoping to take decent photos of sunsets or wildlife, I’d strongly recommend carrying a tripod  with you.
• Hiking Boots and Sandals: I love my  Keens , and will never choose another brand for my everyday boots. I always camp in Crocs because they’re comfortable and lightweight.
• Backpack: I recommend this simple North Face pack , but you may also want this water-resistant Patagonia pack if you’ll be doing a lot of water-based activities. Check out my post on the best daypacks for women for more options.

Every hiker should always carry the ten essentials with them. These include:

• Navigation systems: map , compass , and/or GPS
• Sun protection: sunscreen and/or ballcap
• Insulating layers: synthetic or down jacket, rain jacket , hat , gloves , and leggings
• Illumination ( flashlight or headlamp )
• First-aid kit
• Something to light a fire: lighter , waterproof matches , and/or fire starter
• Repair kits and tools: pocket knife , duct tape, screwdriver, and/or scissors
• Emergency shelter: tent , bivy , tarp, and/or space blanket
• Nutrition: food for both meals and snacks
• Hydration: water bottle , water treatment ( LifeStraw or  SteriPen ), and water

For Camping: The Basics

• Tarp or ground cover
• Sleeping bag
• Sleeping pad
• Camp pillow
• Light source: flashlight , lantern , or headlamp
• Cook set , stove , utensil , and fuel

They made sure we had a great trip. Snorkeled in two spots that were completely different from each other. One bayside in a mangrove area, so much to see. This morning, we got a call informing us that there had been a “computer glitch” and, in fact, there were no spots on a tour available for us at the time we had booked. So, we got bumped from our tour literally while we were packing up to leave for the tour. We were also told that we could reschedule to a different tour this week (while we are still on vacation in the area), but when we tried to reschedule, we were told that every other tour this week is fully booked by now. Our children were so excited for today, and we had to tell them that it wouldn’t happen at all. Even if there were some legitimate reason to not hold our spots as we reserved them, I wish they had told us sooner, so that we could have booked a replacement. Such a waste and a disappointment. Captain Castle was fun, relaxed, and informative and ensured we were actually under sail the maximum amount of time possible. He pointed out many plants and animals we simply would have missed on our own while catering to a large range of experience/skill in kayaking and snorkeling. • samanthasY3229PU 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Gorgeous Views, Memorable Experiences, Amazing People My friends and I did the Snorkel Experience at 9:15am and the Evening Cruise at 6pm with Biscayne National Park Institute in the middle of March. On the snorkeling trip, we saw coral reefs with interesting wildlife and the Mandalay shipwreck. Our naturalist Daniel and captain Andrew were very knowledgeable, entertaining, and made the experience so enjoyable. We rented snorkeling equipment and the pickup was super easy. Later that day we did the Evening Sunset Cruise and went near Soldier Key, the Boca Chita wannabe lighthouse, looked for sponges and wildlife in calm water, and went near Stiltsville where we watched a gorgeous pink sunset. We learned about the history of Biscayne, saw some birds like egrets and pelicans, and had amazing conversations. Captain Jeff and naturalist Emily were incredibly passionate and we thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them. The first was the 6 hour Snorkel and Island visit from Coconut Grove. This was a small group of just 6 of us and it was super fun with Nico as the captain, as he shared stories of his childhood growing up in nearby Key Biscayne. We snorkeled in 2 places and then spent about an hour at Boca Chita Key before returning with a short stop around Stiltsville. We felt like this was an excellent way to see the highlights of the National Park since 95% of it is under water. Ask for Nico if you go! The second was the Evening Cruise - it is nice to have an alternative to many other options of boozy and loud evening cruises available. Thanks to Captain Jeff and Emily who steered us around Stiltsville and shared how the National Park came to exist and also the colorful history of the community of Stiltsville in its heyday. And yes we were lucky to enjoy a beautiful sunset (and no bugs!). Bonus feel good factor: The Institute basically runs the trips into the National Park for the National park, so all profits after paying the crew and ships, etc. go back into maintaining the park's programs (remember: the park does not have entrance fees so no funding from that source). Our wonderful guides and the boat Ocean Rider took us to snorkel at a shipwreck (the Mandelay) and the mangroves at Sand Key. These were two very different and equally enjoyable locations on the same outing. My husband and I booked a family snorkeling trip with our college-age son. It had been years since any of us snorkeled, so for practical purposes, we were beginners. Our guides helped us feel completely safe and competent - they were outstanding and fun instructors. We did two spots -- a shipwreck and the mangroves. Totally different! And I have to say -- I have snorkeled some great places and I was pleased with the two spots. The shipwreck had a number of colorful fish and was a cool spot. The mangrove was very different. Had to hunt around for small fish and lobster in the grasses. Marty was a fantastic guide, super knowledgeable about the park and ecosystem and dropped a ton of knowledge. Paddle boarding through the mangroves was beautiful, saw baby sharks and some sting rays. The reefs were beautiful and full of life, including a nurse shark!!! I do recommend bringing your own wetsuit. They did not have enough suits for us to have the correct size so they weren't of much use. The trip back is cold when you're wet so bring lots of extra warm clothes.
