Virgin Voyages fleet

Brilliant lady, resilient lady, valiant lady, scarlet lady, review of virgin voyages.

Virgin Voyages (formerly "Virgin Cruises", VirginVoyages.com) is a new cruise line company headquartered in Plantation (Florida USA). Virgin Voyages was created as a joint venture between Virgin Group Ltd (British multinational holding company) and Bain Capital LP (multi-asset investment company), with the latter having a majority (51%) shareholding. The establishment of Virgin Cruises was announced by Virgin Group on December 4, 2014. The new cruise line is scheduled to start operations in 2020.

Company History

Bain Capital (1984-founded) is based in Boston (Massachusetts USA) and specializes in private equity, venture capital, credit, public equity, life sciences and real estate, with assets (under management in FY2018) ~USD 105 billion. Virgin Group Ltd (1970-founded by Richard Branson and Nik Powell) is based in London (England UK) and specializes in global investments and branding through numerous fully- or partially-owned subsidiary companies in businesses like travel (cruises, hotels, tours, airlines, trains), hospitality, health, banking, retail, communications, entertainment, publishing, charity.

Virgin Group's best-known brands are Virgin Holidays, Virgin Voyages, Virgin Megastores, Virgin Hotels, Virgin Care, Virgin Trains USA (Brightline), and Virgin Airlines (Australia, Atlantic, Connect, and Galactic/spaceflights).

Virgin Voyages operates a fleet of four fully-owned cruise vessels constructed by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri SpA (at Sestri Ponente shipyard/ Genoa ).

In FY2018, Fincantieri reported revenue of EUR 5,4 billion. Currently ranked Europe's largest shipbuilding company, Fincantieri has 8 shipyards (all in Italy), in 2013 acquired VARD (Norway-based company with 9 shipyards) and in 2018 purchased 50% of STX France (Chantiers de l'Atlantique Shipyard in St Nazaire ). Fincantieri builds both commercial and naval ships.

In 2020, Virgin Cruises officially started operations (from Miami Florida USA ) with the 2800-passenger Scarlet Lady . Three more sisterships were inaugurated in the following years - Valiant Lady (2021), Resilient Lady (2022) and Brilliant Lady (2024).

The announcement (initially for 3 ships) was made on June 23, 2015, in Miami, during a press conference (media event "making waves") for Virgin Group's new cruise travel brand. For the event, Richard Branson arrived on a helicopter, landing near Miami's Museum Park. He announced that the total building cost for the 3 ships is USD 2,13 billion (US$710M per unit). The announcement for the 4th ship was made on October 31, 2018, with order value ~EUR 700 million.

The company's current President and CEO is Nirmal Saverimuttu (1979-born in Zambian, raised in Australia), who in September 2023 succeeded Thomas Michael McAlpin (1959-born American). McAlpin joined DCL-Disney Cruise Line in 1995 (as VP of Finance, Business Development & Shore Travel Operations) overseeing the construction of the first Disney ships ( Magic /1998 and Wonder /1999) and the development of Walt Disney's private Bahamian island Castaway Cay . In 2004, he became DCL's President. Prior to heading Virgin Cruises, McAlpin served as CEO of The World Residences at Sea (in the period 2009-2014). Following his retirement from CEO and President, Tom McAlpin continued to serve Virgin Voyages as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Earlier in 2016, Virgin settled US$300M lawsuits filed by Colin Veitch (former NCL-Norwegian CEO), who claimed Virgin had stolen his ideas and moved on with the cruise line concept without him.

Tom McAlpin commented that the company is not to be considered a big player in the cruising industry, but rather "a small boutique line that will offer different experiences". McAlpin and Branson hinted that those experiences might take some cues from other successful Virgin ventures, like Virgin Hotels. The hotel chain is popular for offering free WiFi, minibar drinks at street prices, privacy doors allowing guests to go on about their business while room service brings requests, pet-friendly amenities with no weight or size restrictions.

In October 2016, "Virgin Cruises" was rebranded as "Virgin Voyages". At the time it was first announced, the company's founder Branson said his goal was to create a brand cruising experience that is more likely to appeal to millennials and other people who don't normally take cruise ship vacations.

In regard to onboard gratuities, the company has "No Tipping" policy, which means all gratuities are included in the base cruise fares. Also included in basic fares are beverages, all eateries, group fitness classes. The company also doesn't charge penalties or change fees. Customers are able to hold staterooms for 24 hours with no money down once they've placed a 20% non-refundable deposit. They also have a 7-day grace period allowing them to change bookings for any reason. Cruise departure date and names on bookings can be changed without fees or penalties. Shortly before opening the bookings on Scarlet Lady (Feb 14, 2019), Virgin announced all-inclusive deal policy by which cruises are sold "by cabin price". Fares are also inclusive of dining (shipwide / 20 options, some 24-hour), unlimited WiFi, all fitness classes. Cabin pricing only varies by the number of occupants. For 5-day itineraries, fares start from ~USD 250 pp per day (excluding taxes-fees).

Virgin Cruises' "non-commissionable policy" allows travel agents to earn across customer's entire transaction, including on add-ons (hotels, flights, travel insurance, spa treatments, tours/excursions, premium packages, onboard credits, taxes, fees). Travel agents receive 16% base commission on the transaction (increased from 10% by the expanded "Brilliant To Do Business With" program). "Red Hot Bonus" program additionally offers annually paid revenue up to 6% (in case certain production thresholds are met) in addition to 10% commission on everything sold prior the cruise (excepting taxes and fees).

Company changes 2019 (pre-inauguration)

In early-April 2019, Virgin Voyages signed an exclusive 7-year partnership deal with OSW (OneSpaWorld Holdings Ltd) - a provider of health-and-wellness services and products on cruise vessels and in destination resorts worldwide. OSW provides all the wellness staff, services and products onboard Virgin ships, including yoga and gym trainers, massages, medispa treatments, salon (manicure-pedicure-hairdresser) services. Each ship has a 29-person OSW-employed professional staff. The served facilities include Crow's Nest (outdoor yoga studio), Redemption Spa, Dry-Dock (blowout bar), B-Complex (Fitness Center).

In April 2019, Virgin and Intelligentsia Coffee signed a deal to provide Intelligentsia coffee (Virgin Voyages Blend) and made-to-order beverages at all venues, including the specialty coffee bars ("Ministry of Ground" and "Ministry of Ground Too") served by expert baristas.

The new station serves high-speed trains and connects PortMiami directly with the USA's intercity railway system and Orlando International Airport.

On November 12, 2019, Richard Branson announced that the second Virgin ship ( Valiant Lady ) will be seasonally homeported in Sydney (NSW Australia) . Branson was in Sydney to launch a partnership between Virgin Australia Airlines and Virgin Voyages and promote affordable Australian and Caribbean fly-cruise deals on Scarlet Lady.

On December 13, 2019, was officially released the "Ship No. 1" perfume (aka "the fragrance of Scarlet Lady"). The sea lavender-based perfume was created by Air Aroma - a company specializing in scent marketing and fragrance systems (diffusers, Aropromo sale scenting devices). Virgin's Ship No. 1 is infused throughout Scarlet Lady. The perfume can be also purchased (only online - via ItSmellsLikeShip.com) for USD 50 per bottle. All net proceeds from these sales go to Ocean Unite (non-profit foundation of 30+ political leaders and business tycoons).

On December 19, 2019, was announced the "Sailor Loot" (OBC/onboard credit) program. These promotions offer OBC (per cabin) for shipboard spending during the current voyage. The OBC is based on the stateroom category and ranges from US$ 100 (interior and oceanview) to US$200 (balcony) and up to US$ 400 (suites).

Now each Virgin cruise ship offers 50+ activities and events. The onboard programming features live performances (by the company's Hapenings Cast) and is managed by Richard Kilman (Virgin's VP of Entertainment).

Company changes 2024

In February Steven Worling (Senior Director of Infrastructure & Security) announced that Virgin Voyages would roll out fleetwide an improved connectivity (Internet/Wi-Fi package) with SES Cruise mPOWERED + Starlink PRO (satellite service), with onboard connectivity 1,5 Gbps (max per ship). The Internet is provided via MEO and LEO satellites (Medium Earth Orbit and Low Earth Orbit). Shipboard Wi-Fi access is unlimited and for multiple devices per guest.

Company changes 2023

In February, Virgin replaced Harding UK (Bristol-based global travel retail business) with Starboard Cruise Services (Doral Florida-based company). As of 2023, Starboard was contracted by 11 cruise lines and operated on 90+ ships worldwide.

In March was announced an expansion of onboard entertainment fleetwide. The announcement mentioned new cabaret and game shows, new parties (80s Party, We Fancy), and more live music (by the hosted in The Red Room and The Manor program Festival Stage Acts/comedy shows rotating every 2 to 4 weeks). The list of new productions includes three fleetwide game shows (Duel Reality, Untitled DanceShowPartyThing, Miss Behave), the cabaret show Lola’s Library (fleetwide), as well as 3 new productions debuting on Resilient Lady (Persephone, Mind Mangler, Another Rose/Supper Club Series).

In April Virgin signed a partnership deal with WPT/World Poker Tour (2002-founded, internationally televised gaming and entertainment brand). The premium poker experience is offered on Scarlet Lady during all 4-5-night Caribbean itineraries. The ship's new WPT at Sea Poker Room is fitted with 8 poker tables and served by professional dealers. The new gaming venue hosts beginner training sessions, as well as cash games and WPT Prize Package poker tournaments with buy-ins between US$80-320. The US$320 buy-in WPT Prize tournament is held once per cruise. The prize (US$5000) can be used on any future voyage or WPT tournament.

In September, Nirmal Saverimuttu succeeded Michael McAlpin as the company's President and CEO. Along with the new appointment was announced a capital raise of USD 550 million (~EUR 512M/~GBP 440M) with funds managed by Ares Management's Private Equity Group. As of 2023, Ares had ~US$49,2 billion of AUM/assets under management.

In October 2023, Michelle Bentubo was appointed COO/Chief Operating Officer. In 2016-2023 she served the company as VP of Technology & Operations. Previously, she has held executive positions at Walt Disney World (Director of Experience Development), DCL-Disney Cruise Line (Director of Disney's Magical Express) and Bank of America (SVP Technology/2013-16).

In November 2023, Peter Hunt was appointed CFO/Chief Financial Officer. He previously served as CFO for Service King Collision Repair (1976-founded automotive company) and before that was in the leadership team of Virgin America Inc (2004-founded/2018-merged with Alaska Airlines).

Company changes 2022

In March 2022 was announced a partnership with Jennifer Lynn Lopez (1969-born American actress and singer) via her brand company "JLo Beauty and Lifestyle LLC". Jennifer Lopez joined Virgin Voyages as an investor and chief of entertainment/advisor/lifestyle officer. As part of the partnership, fleetwide was introduced "JLo Beauty" (onboard shop) selling the superstar's products at sea for the first time. In June 2023, she was appointed as Virgin's Chief Celebrations Officer.

In September 2022 debuted Virgin's loyalty program "The Sailing Club" by which repeat customers are provided with two main complimentary perks - "Deep Blue Extras" (premium WiFi, invitations to onboard cocktail parties, laundry services) and "Red Hot Booking Bonus Months" (discounted booking with additional OBC/onboard credit).

In September 2022 Virgin partnered with RSB/Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (an independent global membership organization). Virgin also signed long-term agreements with three providers of waste-based sustainable fuels (Argent Energy, GoodFuels, Twelve) to supply the fleet's bunker fuels.

Company changes 2021

In mid-November 2021 was announced an investment in Virgin Voyages by Patricof & Co (1969-founded by Alan Patricof, specializing in venture capital investments). The company is part of Apax Partners LLP (London UK-based equity firm) that also includes Multinational Management Group (1972-founded) and Saunders Karp & Megrue (1988-founded).

In December 2021 was announced the partnership with the House Spirits Distillery () for the fleetwide presence of the brand "Aviation American Gin" (aka Aviation Gin/alcohol volume 42%, produced in Portland Oregon since 2006). Signature cocktails (based on the Aviation Gin) available for ordering at each Virgin ship include "The Double Agent at SIP", "Razzle Dazzle's Electric Fizz", "Stella's Groove at The Manor", "Gunbae's French 75".

Company changes 2020

On April 1, 2020, the company launched its "Jet Transfers Direct to Ship" service. The exclusive "fly-cruise" deal is for RockStar Suite passengers only, allowing them to arrive and depart the boat via chartered or private aircraft. The planes land at The Runway - a top-deck open space (Deck 17 aft) surrounded by a raised Jogging Track.

Virgin cruise ships

On June 23, 2015, Virgin announced it had signed a Letter of Intent with Fincantieri (shipbuilder based in Trieste Italy ) for the construction of 3 ships scheduled for deliveries in 2020-2021-2022 (entering service in 15-month increments).

The shipbuilding order was officially finalized on December 21, 2016. The boats are of the so-called "Lady-class", mid-sized (volume 110000 GT-tons), max passenger capacity 2860 (1410 cabins/90% with balconies), 1150 crew-staff.

The shipbuilding contract was valued at ~EUR 2 billion. The first unit's construction (Scarlet Lady) started with the steel-cutting on March 22, 2017. For the vessel design and construction, Virgin contracted the marine architecture and naval design companies "Roman and Williams" (NYC), Concrete Amsterdam, Tom Dixon's Design Research Studio (London UK), Gem Srl (Italy), Softroom (London UK), WORKac (NYC), Knibb Design, HL Studio (UK), HKS Architects (Dallas USA), PearsonLloyd (London UK).

The first ship's ( Scarlet Lady ) keel-laying ceremony was held on October 31, 2017, and attended by Sir Richard Branson, Tom McAlpin, and Boy George (UK singer, songwriter, fashion designer) who performed as superstar DJ. During the ceremony were also revealed the ship design and hull art of the future Virgin "Lady Ships".

The next image shows the ship's stern (aft) and the signature funnel shape - designed to be a major part of its exterior design. The aft of the superstructure also shows the Promenade Deck and 7 decks of cabin balconies towering above.

Virgin Voyages cruise ship

Each boat has 86% balcony staterooms and 93% oceanview (outside) cabins. These newbuilds greatly differ from other passenger liners (as design) and target younger and more adventurous travellers (called "sailors").

Virgin's ships are adults-only (passengers under 18 yo/teenagers and kids are not allowed) and Bahamas- flagged (registered in Nassau ).

Dining on Virgin Voyages ships is ticket price-inclusive - no extra charges are applied to any of the 20-plus onboard dining options. The cruise company doesn't believe in "paying more for great food", so it ditched traditional surcharges levied in specialty restaurants. All eateries offer "exceptional made-to-order eats" - complimentary.

As part of the company's sustainable travel policy, Virgin banned single-use plastics and there is no buffet food on the ships. All shipboard food is made-to-order - to reduce waste and lower energy consumption and emissions. Savings are reinvested into fresh (locally sourced) top-quality products, exotic ingredients, highly trained staff, and clean technologies. In April 2019 was signed a partnership with Emerald Brand to supply the fleet with "Tree-Free" (disposable) paper products, including facial-bath tissues, paper towels, napkins, hot cups. Those are made from 60-100% Tree-Free materials via technologies that use by-products of agricultural crops usually wasted or burned.

The company doesn't follow any traditional cruise dining concepts. Virgin ships don't have a main dining room, buffet restaurant, dress code (formal wear policy), assigned dining times or seating. All these concepts were replaced with intimate (boutique hotel-type) eateries offering 20+ dining options - all of which are included in cruise fares.

At night, the wellness complex transforms into a dancing lounge with live DJ music.
  • Razzle Dazzle is the vegan-vegetarian restaurant. Part of Razzle Dazzle is Red Bar - juice bar for fresh-squeezed juices and tonics, as well as crafted cocktails from a menu that varies every night. In two days per voyage, at Razzle Dazzle are hosted Drag Brunches featuring live entertainment by "sassy drag queens".

Via the Sailor App (when your phone is shaken), a secret Champagne button allows you to order Moet-Chandon Champagne (Brut Imperial, 750 ml bottle) delivered in an ice bucket and with two glasses. The service is called "Shake for Champagne" and provided anywhere on the ship. The premium wine can be also enjoyed at The Sip - the ship's wine lounge (Virgin's champagne house).- where also is available traditional British Afternoon Tea service.

Virgin cruise passengers are offered complimentary water (filtered and sparkling) at all onboard bars and restaurants. Throughout the ship, there are also complimentary water stations.

Virgin ships' hull art designs are Mermaid-themed (by different artists) and Inspired by traditional figureheads mounted on the bows of historic wooden ships. The designs symbolize the vessels' feminine spirit.

Ship technology

One of the cruise ships' features is the advanced clean energy system provided by the Swedish company Climeon Ocean. The new technology allows reducing CO2 emissions by converting the generated by diesel engines' heat into electricity for shipboard use. Each of the newbuilds has 6 such Climeon units, saving ~5400 tons of carbon dioxide annually. The ship's waste processing system is provided by Scanship.

On April 30, 2018, Virgin Voyages signed with Wartsila (marine technologies Finnish corporation / former shipbuilder) a 10-year "Optimised Maintenance Agreement" giving the corporation extensive and exclusive responsibility of the fleet's technical maintenance. Wartsila's "Dynamic Maintenance Planning" system allows maintenance works to be scheduled based on remotely (real-time) monitored and analyzed vessel performance data. This allows extending service intervals (when onboard equipment doesn't require maintenance).

The Virgin-Wartsila deal includes Remote Operational Support Services, Specific Fuel Oil Consumption, spare parts, engines technical advisory services, comprehensive technical support, personnel training. Wartsila-made ship equipment includes 46F diesel engines, Hybrid Scrubber System, SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction/exhaust gas cleaning) and NACOS Platinum series (navigation and automation control systems).

  • Each Virgin ship is powered by two 8-cylinder plus two 12-cylinder "Wartsila 46F" marine diesel engines. Wartsila's Hybrid Scrubber System operates in both open and closed-loop and uses seawater to remove SOx from the ship's exhaust. It also significantly reduces NOx emissions.
  • Propulsion is based on ABB Azipod XO system (electric drive motors with off-hull submerged azimuth thrusters / 360--degree rotating propellers). These units provide best maneuverability (allowing in-port navigation without tug assistance) and minimal vibrations/noise. By placing the propulsion units outside the hull, the Azipod system frees up space for more lower-deck staterooms.
  • ABB Ability technology is based on a network using real-time data transferred to remote centres monitoring and analyzing the propulsion system data and also offering remote technical support.
  • In July 2017, was announced that Wartsila (marine technologies Finnish corporation / former shipbuilder) is the provider of vessels' power plants. Among Wartsila's core products are large diesel engines for cruise ships and ferries .

In April 2019 was contracted V-Ships Leisure USA (ship management company) which is part of V-Group Ltd (vessel management and support services provider, industry's first with a dedicated cruise ship division). V-Ships Leisure is responsible for Virgin ships' technical support/management and crew sourcing.

Virgin cruise line's staff and crew uniforms were designed by Gareth Pugh and manufactured by Cintas Corporation (via the "Design Collective by Cintas" division).

  • Cintas Corporation (1929-founded, based in Cincinnati, Ohio USA) specializes in businesses products (both for rental and direct purchase) and services, including uniforms, mats, water coolers, cleaning/restroom supplies (chemicals, mops, microfiber towels, disinfectant sprays, hand sanitizers), first aid/safety products, fire extinguishers (also testing and repairs), employee courses (safety, training, compliance). In 2020, Cintas had 40,000+ employees and total revenue USD 7,09 billion (~EUR 6,12B / ~GBP 5,21B).
  • Virgin Voyages Crew apparel collection is based on sustainable fabrics and garments specifically designed according to job functions, body types and climates. Unlike the traditional cruise ship uniforms, Virgin's lack the officers' epaulettes (ornamental shoulder pieces that designate his/her rank), as well as ties and waistcoats.

The project was led by Gareth Pugh (British fashion designer) and supervised by Dee Cooper (Virgin Voyages' SVP Design and Customer Experience).

The Band is activated upon boarding the ship and used for onboard purchases and payments (beverages, Casino gaming), booking tours, cabin access (room key), room service ordering (points guest's current location), VIP pass (for Richard's Rooftop).

Virgin's private island resort "Bimini Beach Club" (Bahamas)

The liner Scarlet Lady is the first cruise ship to stop at "Bimini Beach Club" (Virgin Group's private island resort in Bimini Bahamas ). The exclusive destination allows Virgin's Sailors to enjoy world-class entertainment from a rotating cast of DJs led by Mark Ronson. Virgin's Bimini Beach Club offers premium food with locally sourced ingredients and traditional Bahamian favourites like banana leaf-wrapped queen snapper, conch and mango salad, Bahamian rum cake. Virgin's private resort is located on North Bimini Island and at a short bus transfer from the docking pier. It was built via partnership with Resorts World Bimini. This is a 750-acres (3 km2 / 1,2 mi2) beachfront resort-casino-marina-hotel complex operated by Genting Group (Malaysia-based multinational corporation). North Bimini is approx 68 km (42 mi) east of Miami .

Resort's building cost is USD 220 million. Virgin's Bimini Beach Club overlooks the sea and features a large lagoon-style swimming pool. The "resort experience" also features morning open-air exercises (yoga and meditation), afternoon DJ poolside parties, night beach bonfires and live musical performances.

(Coronavirus crisis) passenger shipping pause 2020-2021

Due to the COVID pandemic, Virgin Voyages postponed the cruise brand's in March 2020 inauguration (Scarlet Lady ship's Showcase Tour / media event in PortMiami) for July 15th (4-day "Richard's Birthday Bash"), with the maiden voyage departing on August 7th from Miami. The ship's originally planned inauguration was for March 29th, 2020 (3-day "Sneak-A-Peek Cruise").

All the scheduled between March 26-August 7th (a total of 29) departures were canceled. In mid-May 2020 were canceled 15 additional departures (through October 15). The 4-night "Richard Branson's 70th Birthday Cruise" (originally planned for July 15, 2020) was rescheduled for July 14, 2021. In late-September 2020 were canceled all Scarlet Lady's November itineraries, and in late-October - the remaining (December 2020) departures. The brand's inauguration was rescheduled for 2021 (January 3, then for May 9). In mid-December were cancelled more itineraries.

The brand's inauguration was rescheduled for August 6, 2021 (Scarlet Lady's Maiden Voyage from Portsmouth England). Valiant Lady's inaugural cruise program was also postponed (Maiden Voyage rescheduled from Nov 14, 2021, to March 18, 2022) and revised.

All affected bookings were provided with the option to cancel with a 125% refund (100% monetary refund) plus 25% in FCC (future cruise credit) or rebook with 200% refund in FCC. As a promo offer, all bookings made by June 30, 2020, received up to USD 500 per person in OBC (onboard credit). A full (100%) monetary refund was optional for cancellations made between May 21-December 31, 2020.

All rebookings made with the 200% FCC were fully refunded (200%) and additionally received 25% in FCC (to be used on another booking). Virgin Voyages also introduced the "Smooth Sailing Program" which allows for itineraries in 2020 (through December 16) the final payment dates to be moved to 60 days (previously 120 days) prior departure. Smooth Sailing also allows cancellations up to 48 hours (prior departure) with receiving a full (100%) refund in FCC.

Itinerary of Virgin Voyages

In 2016, Virgin cruise line's itinerary program was not detailed yet, but Branson mentioned one destination that was on the list - the Caribbean. When asked about Cuba being a potential port destination, he immediately replied "Yes!". This also meant roundtrip departures from a Florida port.

In 2017 was announced that the first Virgin cruise ship ( Scarlet Lady ) will be initially homeported in PortMiami for 7-day Caribbean itineraries departing on Sundays. During the inaugural season 2020-2021, the liner was scheduled to visit Cuba. The company's decision was influenced by conducted customer and travel agency research in the UK and North America. All Virgin cruises to Cuba had to offer an overnight stay in Havana , allowing passengers ("sailors") to explore the country's capital and its unique nightlife.

  • 5-day "Mayan Sol" itinerary visits Havana (overnight) and Costa Maya (Mexico) . In Mexico, shore excursions include scuba diving (coral reefs) and Mayan ruins.
  • 5-day "Dominican Daze" itinerary visits Havana (overnight) and Puerto Plata (Dominicana) where shore tours include trekking, surfing, shopping.

The second Virgin ship ( Valiant Lady ) is homeported in Miami during 2022-2023 winter season.

On November 28, 2018, Richard Branson and Tom McAlpin announced in Miami the company's plans to build a new (Virgin-exclusive) cruise terminal in PortMiami. "Virgin Voyages Terminal" is sized 100,000 ft2 (9300 m2) and is on the seaport's northwest side.

Virgin Voyages passengers benefit from an impressive variety of cruises to choose from in the inaugural 2020 season of the line's new build . The 4- or 5-night "Havana After Dark" itineraries allow Sailors to explore the Cuban culture and include an overnight stay in Cuba's capital city.

  • The 5-night "Mayan Sol" itinerary visits Costa Maya Mexico . The Mayan ruins are just a short distance from the port and colorful coral reefs lie just off-shore. Virgin Voyages partnered with ITM Group for the land tours.
  • The 5-night "Dominican Daze" itinerary visits Puerto Plata . On the island are offered trekking, surfing and handicraft shopping tours.

All Virgin Caribbean cruises depart from homeport Miami Florida . Virgin ships are also seasonally deployed in Europe (via Transatlantic crossings), with planned visits to several major Mediterranean and UK ports (including Dover and Liverpool ).

However, following the 2019s (June 5 issued) US Government restrictions on USA to Cuba travel, Virgin Voyages revised all scheduled itineraries to exclude Havana . The new itineraries offer late-night call port departures (including a midnight departure) on all revised Caribbean voyages.

  • 5-night "Riviera Maya" itinerary visits Playa Del Carmen (across Cozumel Island), with opportunities to explore archaeological and ecological sites or touring the neighbouring Tulum (walled Mayan city).
  • 4-night "Fire and Sunset Soirees" (short-breaks) visit Key West Florida (sunset departure) and Bimini Bahamas (with a late-night beach bonfire party and midnight departure). The line's sailors can experience the cultural paradise of Key West, paired with an exclusive late-night beach bonfire soiree. The artistic fire installation draws inspiration from the fireball sculptures on Branson's Necker Island.
  • 7-night itineraries (for 2020 Xmas holidays) include the themed cruises "Holidaze and Nights" and "New Year's Ahoy" visiting Puerto Plata Dominicana with Bimini Bahamas and San Juan Puerto Rico.

All Virgin Caribbean cruises visit Bimini Bahamas as a private island destination.

In April 2022 was announced that in winter 2023-2024, Resilient Lady will be deployed in Australia and New Zealand (Virgin brand's debut in the region). With homeporting in Melbourne , the roundtrip itineraries ranged between 2-14 nights. Some voyages also visited ports in Tasmania (Hobart, Burnie).

Valiant Lady's inaugural cruises 2022

Virgin's second ship ( Valiant Lady ) starts its inaugural season (2022/Maiden Voyage departs March 18th) with roundtrips leaving from Portsmouth England .

  • 3-night "Long Weekender" to Zeebrugge Belgium
  • 11-night "Coast the Canary Islands, Spain and Portugal"/UK to Iberia
  • 12-night "Late Nights in Portugal and Spain"/UK to Iberia

Follows a Western Mediterranean deployment (May thru October 2022) based on homeporting in Barcelona and 7-day roundtrips (Sunday departures) visiting large port cities in France, Italy and Spain. Valiant Lady's Caribbean program is based on homeporting in Miami Florida USA and includes 2-week Transatlantic crossings on repositioning between Europe and USA (RepositionCruises.com).

  • 8-night Eastern Caribbean itineraries (Miami roundtrips) are priced from USD 188 per night and visit Puerto Plata (Dominicana) , San Juan (Puerto Rico) , St Croix Island (USVI) and Bimini (Bahamas) .
  • 6-night Western Caribbean itineraries (roundtrips from Miami) visit Roatan Island (Honduras) , Costa Maya (Mexico) and Bimini. Fares start at USD 192 per night.
  • Special ( Christmas and New Year's ) itineraries and Atlantic Ocean crossings/relocation voyages are priced from USD 102 per night.

In the Caribbean, Virgin boats are homeported in Miami and all itineraries visit Bimini Bahamas as a private island destination.

Resilient Lady's inaugural cruises 2022

Virgin's third ship ( Resilient Lady ) starts its inaugural season (2022/Maiden Voyage departs August 14th) with roundtrips leaving from Piraeus-Athens (Greece) .

  • The 7-day roundtrip "Greek Island Glow" itinerary visits the Greek islands Santorini, Rhodes, Crete (Chania) and Mykonos.
  • The 7-day roundtrip "Adriatic Sea and Greek Gems" itinerary visits Croatia (Dubrovnik), Montenegro (Kotor), and Greece (Kerkyra/Corfu Island, and Argostoli/Kefalonia Island).
  • The "Greek Isles" program (scheduled between August 14 - October 23) ends with the 11-day Transatlantic crossing from Europe to the Caribbean (from Lisbon to San Juan/departure November 1st).

The inaugural Caribbean season 2022-2023 (Nov 12 - April 15) is based on homeporting in San Juan Puerto Rico and 7-day roundtrips.

  • The "Southeastern Caribbean Isles" itinerary visits Tortola Island BVI (Road Town), Guadeloupe (Pointe-a-Pitre), Barbados (Bridgetown), St Lucia (Castries) and Antigua (St Johns).
  • The "Sunsets In The Lesser Antilles" itinerary visits St Kitts (Basseterre), Martinique (Fort-de-France), Curacao (Willemstad) and Aruba (Oranjestad).

In 2023-2024 (December-March), Resilient Lady was deployed in Australia. The program included three relocation itineraries from Europe to Asia and Australia (RepositionCruises.com) - 14-day from Athens to Dubai (Oct 22), 15-day from Dubai to Singapore (Nov 5) and 15-day from Singapore to Sydney NSW (Nov 20).

Itineraries 2024-2025

Virgin's 2024-2025 (April) schedule lists 19 maiden/new ports and 27 different itineraries in the UK, Australia/NZ, and the Caribbean. Among these are the "Seachange Series" (ship relocation voyages) providing extended sea travel opportunities.

Resilient Lady is homeported in Piraeus-Athens Greece (May through July 2024) for Aegean and Adriatic itineraries. In the summer (August through September 2024) Resilient Lady visits Bordeaux ,  La Coruna , and  Bilbao on the relocation voyage to England.

On February 26, 2024, Virgin Voyages canceled Resilient Lady's 2024-2025 Australian program, citing security concerns (due to the Red Sea war crisis) impacting the ship's scheduled repositioning voyages through the Suez Canal (between Europe and Australia/RepositionCruises.com). Virgin also announced that Resilient Lady (after completing the Mediterranean season on October 20th/2024) will be deployed in the Caribbean and homeported in San Juan (Puerto Rico) offering 7-8-10-11-night roundtrips to St Maarten, St Vincent, Colombia, and Dominica.

Valiant Lady (from  PortMiami  and  San Juan Puerto Rico ) offers Caribbean roundtrips (winter 2023-2024) and in April 2024.

Scarlet Lady in summer 2024 is deployed in the Mediterranean and has scheduled two repositioning voyages - from Barcelona to Civitavecchia-Rome, and a Transatlantic crossing to Miami for a new Caribbean deployement.

Virgin Voyages Tips | 10 Things to Know Before Your First Cruise

By: Author Emily

Posted on Last updated: January 2, 2024

If you’re sailing with Virgin Voyages, you should be prepared for sun-soaked days, fun-filled nights and flavor-packed meals. But you should also be prepared to do a bit of prep in advance if you want to take your cruise to the next level. In this post, we’ll share our 10 best Virgin Voyages tips to help you get the most out of your cruise.

I recently returned from a 5-day Virgin Voyages Dominican Daze Cruise on the Scarlet Lady . Before this trip, I had only cruised with Disney Cruise Line, and the Virgin Voyages experience was very different. (If you’re interested in how those two cruise lines compare, be sure to check out our post on Disney Cruise Line vs Virgin Voyages .) I learned so many things from my first Virgin Voyages cruise, and I’m sharing it all here.

Follow these tips and you can be sure that you won’t miss out on any of the fun (or food) onboard. The best part about these tips is that most of them can be done before your trip, so by the time you board you can sit back and relax.

5 day virgin cruise

Disclaimer: My Virgin Voyages cruise was graciously gifted by our trusted travel advisor, Lauren Quirk, from  Travel With Character . This post is not sponsored by Virgin Voyages or Travel With Character, and I do not receive any compensation in exchange for this post. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.

1. Complete the “Before You Sail” tasks ASAP.

As soon as you book your Virgin Voyages cruise (or as early as 120 days out), download the Virgin Voyages mobile app and complete the “Before you Sail” tasks. You’ll need the app for a few different things before and during your cruise, so you might as well get it now.

The “Before You Sail” task list has seven steps and takes about ten minutes. It includes things like confirming your passport information, taking a security photo and linking a credit card to use onboard. Most importantly though, this is where you can schedule your embarkation time. (Aka the time you can board the ship.)

It’s important to book your embarkation as soon as possible, because the best boarding times can book up quickly. What are the best embarkation times for Virgin Voyages? The earliest ones, which leads us to …

5 day virgin cruise

2. Schedule the earliest embarkation time.

I’d strongly recommend booking the earliest possible embarkation time for your Virgin Voyages cruise. On my cruise, this is 2 PM.

Early boarding has many benefits. Most obviously, you will have more time on the ship, plus shorter queues in the terminal. Most importantly though, early boarding means earlier access to registration for onboard activities. (We’ll talk more about that in tip #6.)

The embarkation experience will vary based on the port you’re sailing from. If you’re sailing from Miami, Virgin Voyages’ Terminal V is very well organized and boarding is quick and orderly. We were scheduled for earliest boarding group, and we were on the ship 20 minutes after we arrived at the terminal.

Boarding times are pretty strictly enforced. There are queues outside the terminal for each boarding time. If you arrive early, you’ll have to wait with your group for your time. You will not be able to board early if you arrive early.

3. Book dining reservations as soon as they open.

Meals are included on all Virgin Voyages cruises. That includes food from all quick service and table service restaurants onboard, as well room service. While all of the food onboard is pretty good, the very best, chef-curated meals can be found at the table service restaurants.

These high-end dining establishments are one of the selling points on Virgin Voyages, but actually getting a table at them takes a little bit of effort.

Virgin Voyages does not automatically schedule any meals for you. That means you’re not guaranteed a chance to dine at every (or any) table service restaurant onboard. You need to proactively make a reservation if you want eat at these table service restaurants.

5 day virgin cruise

Dining reservations open up 45 days before your sailing date. The exact time reservations open up reportedly varies, but it is typically around midnight in the departing port’s timezone. For example, if you are scheduled to sail on December 16, 2023 from Miami, your dining would open just after midnight ET the morning of November 1. You could potentially start checking the website in the late evening hours of October 31, around 11:30 PM, because sometimes they open early.

That said, the reservations don’t book up instantly. Unless you have a large party and are really set on a specific restaurant on a specific date and time, you probably don’t need to stay up till midnight to book your reservation. You should definitely plan to book in the morning of the day reservations open, though, for the best selection.

If you happen to miss the reservation window, don’t give up hope. All of the restaurants do have limited space for walk-ups and same-day reservations. This will just take more time and effort. There is also quick service dining available at all times.

4. See if you qualify for Deep Blue Extras.

Virgin Voyages is a relatively new cruise line, so they don’t have an established frequent sailor program just yet. While they build that up, they’re offering a collection of perks to seasoned sailors called Deep Blue Extras through the end of 2024.

Deep Blue Extras are pretty good, too. The perks include a $100 onboard drink credit, $10 per day specialty coffee credit, some complimentary laundry services and a free upgrade to premium wifi. You’ll also have access to a dedicated Sailor Services rep onboard, expedited boarding and a special happy hour.

Anyone who sailed with Virgin Voyages in 2021 (Sea-Blazers) or has sailed twice in 2022 and 2023 (Sea-Rovers) will receive Deep Blue Extras. If you qualify, these rewards will automatically be applied to your next sailing through 2024.

5 day virgin cruise

4.5 (Bonus tip!). Don’t tighten your Deep Blue Extras bracelet.

If you do qualify for Deep Blue Extras, you’ll get a special bracelet when you check in at the terminal. This one is a ribbon style bracelet with a one-way clasp — meaning you can tighten it but not loosen it.

If you put this bracelet on, make sure that you keep it loose enough to slide on and off. You don’t actually need this bracelet for anything, and all the perks are connected to your other NFC band. I think this is literally just to demonstrate your status on board.

I slipped mine off right away and just kept it in my purse, but I didn’t actually need it.

5 day virgin cruise

5. Use a hair tie for The Band.

When you check in at the terminal, they will give you a bracelet to use during your cruise. The Band is a contactless device that you need to use for pretty much everything on board. It serves as your room key, ID and credit card onboard, and you are required to tap it every time you get on and off the ship.

The NFC device itself is plastic with two attached loops. It is on a rope bracelet that wraps around your wrist twice and attaches with a small metal anchor. As you would expect from that description, the bracelet broke immediately.

5 day virgin cruise

Since the tap device is so important for your cruise, I’d recommend bringing a backup bracelet for it. A hair tie is the perfect solution. Slip the hair tie through one of the loops on The Band, and then pull one side of the hair tie through the other side of the hair tie to create a loop knot. Then you can wear the hair tie around your wrist and The Band won’t go anywhere.

Also, any small bracelet that can fit through these loops will do the trick.

5 day virgin cruise

6. Sign up for activities in the app as soon as you board.

As soon as you board, connect to the ship’s wifi and open the Virgin Voyages app. At this point, you will be able to see the full itinerary for your cruise and begin signing up for activities. To sign up for an activity, click “Add to Agenda.” (Hearting an activity doesn’t officially sign you up for it.)

Some events are “ticketed,” meaning that there is a cap on how many people can participate. Some ticketed activities have an additional fee (like cocktail classes or coffee tastings), while others are free (like yoga, spin classes and select stage shows). For ticketed events, you’ll need to tap your bracelet in order to enter.

You should sign up for all of your ticketed events as soon as you board, because some ticketed events fill up quickly. If any of these activities are important to you, be sure to check the itinerary and sign up quickly or you may miss out.

5 day virgin cruise

Other activities on board (like fitness classes, bingo and parties) are not ticketed. There is no formal cap on who can attend and they don’t check to see if you’ve registered before they let you participate. For these activities, adding them to your agenda is just to keep you organized.

Unfortunately, the Virgin App isn’t great and it’s even worse when everyone is using it at the same time. We experienced the app crashing, spinning and logging us out numerous times on both the basic and premium wifi. So I’d recommend heading to a bar and grabbing a drink for this process so it feels less annoying.

5 day virgin cruise

6.5 (Bonus Tip!). Link your party in advance.

Passengers staying in the same room should automatically be connected with each other in the app. That means that anyone in your cabin can register anyone else in your cabin for activities.

However, if you are traveling with friends or family in other cabins, you will need to manually connect them. You can complete this step at anytime, but ideally you should do it before you board. That way, anyone in your party can start booking for the entire party right away.

7. Plan for any in-person registrations.

While most things onboard can be booked in the app, there are a handful of sign-ups that have to be done in person on the ship. These are things with individual time slots, like tattoo and spa appointments and private karaoke registration, and they will be noted as such in the app. If you are set on any of these services/activities, do some research in advance and plan your first day accordingly.

For example, the tattoo parlor opens after the ship has left port and reaches international waters, often around 6 PM. The line for tattoo appointments forms early and gets long very quickly. Appointments on the last cruise day usually book up first, but they’re usually fully booked within a couple hours. If a tattoo is a priority, plan to be there about an hour before it’s scheduled to open for bookings.

Spa appointments book up less quickly, and karaoke spots usually open up daily. There might be other in-person registrations, but these are the three I know about. This is just something else you’ll want to take care of early for the best choice in times.

5 day virgin cruise

8. Skip luggage service when you board.

Most Virgin Voyages cruises have a luggage service available at embarkation and debarkation. The exact details vary based on your port, but here’s how it works at Terminal V in Miami.

There is a luggage check location outside the terminal. You can leave your bags here and then they will be delivered to your cabin that evening. The timing can vary, but on my cruise they were scheduled to be delivered by 6 PM.

This service can make it easier to navigate the terminal and board the ship without having to deal with your bags. This can also make security a bit easier. If you do use this service, just make sure you keep everything with you that you’ll need before 6 PM (including swimsuits, make up, meds, etc.)

It’s a good service, but I would actually recommend you skip luggage check when you board.

5 day virgin cruise

The main reason for that is because rooms are typically ready as soon as you board. On other cruise lines, that’s not the case, so you want to check your bags so you can enjoy the ship without lugging them around. But on Virgin Voyages, you can usually drop your bags in your room right away. This is easier than having to pack a day bag and then waiting for your bags to be delivered.

The Miami terminal is also easy to pull your bags through. The entire route is accessible by elevator, escalator, and/or ramp, so you won’t have issues with stairs. You do have to go through security, but you don’t have to remove anything from your bags like at the airport. If you have an early boarding time, this process can take less than 20 minutes.

8.5 (Bonus Tip!). Do use luggage service if you have a late debarkation time.

Similarly, Virgin Voyages also offers luggage check service on your debarkation day. You can leave your bags outside your door the night before you disembark, and then pick them up just before you exit the terminal. There is a cutoff time, but it’s usually around midnight.

This service does actually make sense if you have a late debarkation time. Most itineraries allow you to stay on the ship as late as 10:30 AM. However, access to the rooms is usually cut off before that. That means you have to keep your luggage with you.

If you plan to leave the ship late and want to have a relaxing morning, you don’t want to be lugging your bags. In this case, it’s a good idea to take advantage of the baggage service.

5 day virgin cruise

9. Pack the essentials.

This is not a complete packing list, but there are a few things you should be sure to pack for your Virgin Voyages cruise.

  • Passport. There are some ways around this, depending on your itinerary, but it’s best to have it on you when cruising.
  • Scarlet outfit. There are a few cruise parties and events, some of which vary by season, but the highlight of every Virgin Voyages cruise is Scarlet Night. Everyone wears red and there are a few events around the ship. It’s really fun and everyone gets into it, so this is the one onboard event you should definitely plan for.
  • Sunblock and aloe. I’m usually pretty firmly in the buy-it-there camp, but that’s not always possible on a cruise ship. The stores onboard are only open when the ship is at sea and they are closed when the ship is at port. You might not always be able to buy these important items onboard when you need them.
  • Portable charger . Virgin Voyages offers free wifi for everyone, so you might be on your phone more than you think. Plus, you’ll probably be using the app a lot to check the day’s schedules. A portable charger is nice to have in your bag. There are also many outlets around the ship, so you can also just bring an extra cord to keep with you.

5 day virgin cruise

10. Plan your flights properly.

If you are flying on either side of your cruise, selecting the right flight times is a delicate art.

Regardless of what port your sailing from, I would recommend flying in at least one day before you sail. Even if you don’t board until late in the afternoon or evening, I still wouldn’t recommend flying in the same day as your cruise departure. There’s always a chance that your flight gets delayed, you get rerouted, your bags get delayed, etc. You don’t want one bad travel day to cost you your entire cruise if you don’t make it there in time.

That same rule of thumb does not necessarily apply to your departure flight. It’s rare (but not impossible) that your cruise disembarkation will be drastically delayed. You can usually plan to fly out the same day that your cruise is scheduled to arrive. This of course varies based on your specific itinerary and port.

If you’re sailing from Miami, Virgin Voyages officially recommends booking a flight no earlier than noon on your arrival day.

Based on my recent personal experience, though, I would say that you could make a domestic flight as early as 10 AM. My disembarkation was scheduled for 8 AM, but I went down at 7:30 AM and walked right off the ship. There were no lines in the terminal, and I was at the Uber pick-up area by 7:42 AM. I arrived at the Miami airport at 8:02 AM and was through PreCheck security by 8:17 AM.

Everything might not always go that smoothly. However, I just wanted to share an actual timeline to help give you an idea.

5 day virgin cruise

Final Bonus Tip: Work with a travel advisor.

As I mentioned before, this trip was graciously gifted by our travel advisor at Travel With Character . We always work with them to book our Disney vacations , but this was my first time working with them on a cruise. I got to experience first hand what it was like to have a dedicated travel advisor help with my cruise vacation, and it was a dream.

They stayed on top of all of the timelines I mention throughout this post, and sent out reminders for each task to make sure nothing slipped through the cracks. Not only did they make the cruise planning a breeze, but they also helped plan my hotel and activities in Miami before the cruise, and they quickly found a third-party tour provider when our cruise itinerary changed last minute.

If you want your travel planning to be as stress-free as the cruise itself, I’d highly recommend reaching out to Travel With Character. (And no, they’re not paying me to say that.)

As with any cruise, your Virgin Voyages packing list will vary slightly depending on the route, time of year, sailing length, and weather. But in this ultimate Virgin Voyages packing list, you’ll find the essentials you can’t forget on any cruise, whether you’re sailing on the iconic Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady, or Brilliant Lady.

Virgin Voyages Packing List Essentials

1. something red.

The Virgin Voyages Scarlet Night is one of the most iconic events on board . While you’re not required to wear red, its more fun if you do. Since there isn’t a dress code on board Virgin Voyages boats, you can wear anything from an old red tee shirt to a floor-length dress.

Scarlet Night Outfit

My Scarlet Night outfit doubled as a port day outfit while exploring San Juan, Puerto Rico

If you’re like me and you don’t own anything red, head to a thrift store or quickly order something online ( peruse red outfits on Amazon here ). Personally, I grabbed a red crop top at a thrift store in Miami and paired it with a black denim skirt and my favorite travel sandals ( these ones ). My goofy husband wore a red satin button-down shirt (several sizes too small) that he found at the same thrift shop. We expected more people to be wearing silly outfits, but he was the only one outside of the crew.

2. Pajamas

Another event on board is the Virgin Voyages Pajama Party. You’ll want to have some pajamas to wear—whether they’re your actual pajamas, or something you buy ahead of time specifically for the cruise ( check Amazon options here ). As with Scarlet Night, the Virgin Voyages dress code is casual and varied. You’ll see couples in brand-new matching pajamas sets ( like these ), as well as plenty of people in regular clothing. If you want to go all out, figure out your pajama outfit ahead of time. But if you don’t care to dress in pajamas, you won’t be the only one.

PS: I have several pajama recommendations in my Virgin Voyages Dress Code article.

3. Travel insurance

While something red and pajamas are optional, travel insurance is something you absolutely need. Although you can expect things to go smoothly when you’re on your cruise, you never know when you might have an unexpected flight delay on your way, lost luggage in the airport, or an emergency while exploring a port city.

SafetyWing is my go-to insurance whether I’m living abroad or just spending a week or two on vacation. Their policies covers travel delays, lost checked luggage, natural disasters, personal liability, and dozens of adventure sports. Planning to rent a scooter on Cozumel or go canyoneering in the Dominican Republic? Make sure you choose a travel insurance policy like SafetyWing. It’s a small price to pay for a stress-free and enjoyable cruise.

4. Digital necessities

Unlike most other cruise lines, Virgin Voyages has free wifi (woohoo!). However, if you want to stream or download music or videos, you have to pay extra. Because of this, I highly recommend downloading music and shows ahead of time. You’ll thank yourself later!

Before you leave for your cruise, you should also figure out if you’ll need cell phone coverage in the port cities you’re visiting. Some phone plans include international coverage, and others don’t. If your plan doesn’t include the countries you’re visiting, you have three options: (1) upgrade your plan with your current carrier, (2) purchase a temporary eSIM through Airalo , or (3) plan to explore without phone coverage.

Whichever option you choose, I recommend downloading the local map on the Google Maps app, and downloading the local language on the Google Translate app if you don’t speak the language. If you download these two things correctly, you will be able to access the local map and Google Translate without data or wifi.

Virgin Voyages Packing List Essentials

Beautiful balcony views on the Valiant Lady (perfect spot to read a book!)

5. Kindle or book

Very few things are as idyllic as the experience of immersing yourself in a book while soaking in the sun on vacation. Whether you’re a frequently reader at home or not, a cruise is a great time to start (and finish) a new book. I recently invested in a Kindle and its changed the game for me. No more carrying around heavy books or squinting to see in dim light. Plus, you can switch between numerous books without adding any weight to your suitcase. Make sure you download your books before boarding the cruise, unless you want to pay extra for a wifi upgrade.

6. headphones

Headphones are a must for me, for both exercise and lounging. Certain areas of the ship can get loud, and if you want to block out the noise, you can pop in some noise-cancelling AirPods and play some of your downloaded songs. Also, if you want to take advantage of the ship’s stunning upper deck track or gym, you’ll probably want to listen to your own music.

7. Tote bag or Backpack

You need some sort of bag to carry your belongings around the ship (and of course on port days). I prefer a simple tote bag to bring my Kindle, phone, headphones, and water bottle with me around the ship, but a small backpack works as well.

7. Sunglasses (plus extras!)

Sunglasses are a must have item for almost any cruise. I always bring two pairs, just in case a lose one. Plus, it can be fun to have several pairs to choose from!

My favorite sunglasses are SOJOS . They’re affordable (usually under $20), fairly good quality, cute, and always fit my small face surprisingly well (and my husband’s face too). I always have a pair of their vintage round frames , plus a second pair .

9. Clothing

The amount of clothing you bring on your cruise depends on the length of your sailing, and your own personal preference. For this article, I’m going to assume you’re heading on an 8-day cruise, but this list would also work for a shorter cruise if you want plenty of clothing options. I’m also assuming you’re headed somewhere warm, since most of Virgin’s current routes sail through warmer climates.

What is the Virgin Voyages Dress code?

Short answer: Virgin Voyages does not have a dress code. But read my full article on the topic for more info about what to wear!

Don’t forget shoes! From fancy dinners and sea days by the pool to adventurous excursions and foot tours of foreign cities, you’ll want to a variety of footwear without overpacking. I only brought three pairs of shoes on my Virgin Voyages cruise, and it was perfect for me.

Virgin Voyages Cruise Shoe Packing List for Women

These are the exact shoes I brought on my Virgin Voyages cruise. I would 100% bring these three again.

1 — Arizona Essentials Plastic Birkenstock Sandals : These comfy plastic Birks have replaced my flip flops! Since they’re plastic, they work well for days by the pool and at the beach, but are also comfortable enough to walk in all day. ( Buy here ).

2 — Glenda Platform Birkenstock Sandals : Another comfy pair of Birkenstocks that can easily be dressed up for a fancy dinner, worn around the ship, or in a port city. I love how comfy, cute, and versatile these shoes are! ( Buy here ).

3 — Trail Runners/Tennis Shoes : If you plan on going on any hikes or adventures on shore, or working out on the ship, be sure bring some comfy sneakers. Altra Lone Peak trail runners are my go-to shoes since they’re compact, comfortable, and great for hiking.

Other comfy and cute shoes for your cruise: Reef Water Vista Waterproof Sandals , Mayari Birkenstock Sandals , Plastic Thong Birkenstock Sandals , and Classic Arizona Birkenstock Sandals . (Can you tell I’m a fan of Birks?)

Virgin Voyages Cruise Shoe Packing List for Men

My husband wishes he just packed two pairs of shoes. Here is his ideal cruise packing list for shoes:

1 — Mens Arizona Essentials Plastic Sandals : These shoes are so versatile and comfy! They are perfect for exploring a port city, spending a day at the beach, wandering around the ship, or even wearing to dinner. ( Buy here ).

2 — Running Shoes : Versatile running shoes for a morning run around the beautiful top-deck track, or for exploring a rainy port city. He also loves his Altra Lone Peak trail runners .

11. Toiletries

All Virgin Voyages cabins have soap, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. I’m happy to use the provided body wash and hand soap, but always pack my own shampoo and conditioner. My recommended toiletry packing list for Virgin Voyages cruises includes:

Toiletry Basics

Shampoo Bar & Container : Solid shampoo bars help cut down on liquids and space when traveling. I love Bambu shampoo bars and use both them at home and while traveling. They’re the only shampoo bars I’ve found that don’t leave my hair feeling thick and full of buildup. ( Buy Bambu shampoo bar four pack , buy Bambu shampoo bar single bar ). Bonus: I always keep my shampoo bar in this handy container !

Face Wash Bar : After having such a good experience with shampoo bars, I recently started using a face wash bar. Like shampoo bars, face bars cut down on extra liquid and space in your bag. Plus, they’re more cost effective than regular face wash in my experience. ( Buy natural vegan shampoo bar ).

Toothbrush, Toothpaste & Floss: Don’t forget your dental essentials! Since I travel full time, I bring my normal toothbrush, which is a Burst electric toothbrush in lavender . My husband has a Burst brush in Black , so we just bring one charger when we travel to save space in our bags.

Deodorant : My favorite cost-effective natural deodorant is Arm & Hammer Essentials (unscented) .

Sunscreen : Make sure to pack your favorite sunscreen. I use Innisfree face sunscreen and a body sunscreen.

Dramamine or other sea sickness medicine : Since Virgin Voyages boats are so new, you may not need dramamine , but its better to pack it just in case.

12. My personal Essentials

Besides the other essentials on this list, I have a few items I won’t travel without, including:

1 — Jewelry organizer : I finally found the perfect travel jewelry organizer and I can’t go anywhere without it now! It keeps my necklaces from tangling and fits plenty of earrings, rings, and bracelets. Plus, it takes up very little room in my bag. ( Buy here ).

2 — Mirrorless camera : I used to travel with a DSLR but it was so heavy! I recently switched to a mirrorless Sony A7 III and I’ll never go back. I also bring a Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 lens , which is light and versatile, making it perfect for travel.

13. Optional: two bottles of wine

You can’t bring food or drinks on board, but you can bring two bottles of wine to store in your room. If you like wine and want to save a little on drinks during your cruise, take advantage of this rule!

Virgin Voyages Port Day Essentials

Reusable water bottle.

A reusable water bottle is a must for port days, and can be useful on board as well. Lots of people like HydroFlasks , but my personal preference is a Miir Narrow Mouth Bottle because they are easier to drink from, a little lighter, and less expensive.

If you plan to do any sort of adventure activities during your port days—like snorkeling or canyoneering or scuba diving—I highly recommend investing in a GoPro. I have the GoPro Hero 11 and I love it.

It’s always a good idea to have some cash, no matter where you go. I always bring a few twenty dollar bills regardless of what country I’m in (it’s really come in handy a few times!) If I’m spending more than a day in a different country, I always bring local currency as well. But since cruise port days are so short, I typically just bring U.S. dollars and if I need to, I get some local currency out at an ATM.

A good day pack is a must for cruise port days. I prefer to bring a large fanny pack like this one from Cotopaxi. It fits my phone, wallet, chapstick, snacks and even a small water bottle. If I need more supplies, I’ll bring a small backpack.

Prohibited Items and Things to Leave at Home

There are a few things that you should not bring on a Virgin Voyages cruise. Make sure to leave these unnecessary and/or prohibited items at home.

★ Food and drinks (besides two wine bottles) : Other than two wine bottles, you can’t bring any food or drinks on board a Virgin Voyages cruise. Unfortunately, this means that you can’t bring your own snacks. It also means that you technically can’t buy something edible (like chocolate) in a port city and bring it on board. However, I did end up buying chocolate in the Dominican Republic and no one took it from me when I boarded the boat. Thankfully, all Virgin Voyages cruises are all-inclusive (and vegan-friendly ), so you’ll have all the food and snacks you’ll need on board.

★ Curling irons : You can’t bring curling irons on board, but you can bring straighteners.

★ Laptop : Laptops are allowed on board, but I would recommend leaving yours at home. My husband and I typically travel with a laptop in case we want to watch shows, but you have to pay extra to stream shows. Plus, Virgin Voyages’ cabins have TVs with plenty of free movies and shows preloaded.

Essential Cruise Travel Resources

Have a cruise coming up soon? There are a lot of travel companies out there, but some are better than others. After traveling to dozens of countries and living abroad on several continents, here are some of my favorite websites and resources for planning unforgettable trips.

💪 Travel Insurance : Travel insurance is an essential for any trip—cruise or not! I use SafetyWing , which has affordable rates and coverage for many adventure sports.

🚠 Tours + Activities : Viator (owned by Trip Advisor) is my go-to site for comparing and booking experiences with local tour operators on cruise port days.

📱 Easy phone plans abroad : Use this company to get an eSIM for phone coverage while cruising—without getting a SIM card or canceling your existing plan (unless you want to!)

🎒 Essentials always in my bag : Check out my ‘ in my bag ‘ page for the items I always have in my luggage.

🚗 Car Rentals : Use DiscoverCars , a highly-rated platform for comparing and booking rental cars around the world.

Cruising with Virgin

The brainchild of British entrepreneur Richard Branson, Virgin Voyages is a hip, adults-only cruise line that aims to be a bit different from the other options on the cruising market. And according to recent cruisers, it succeeds; many rave that a Virgin Voyages sailing is unlike any cruise experience they've had before (in a good way). Virgin Voyages' ships stand out with their superyacht-inspired atmosphere, upscale dining outlets, free Wi-Fi access, design-forward staterooms and wellness activities. There are four ships in the fleet (the newest ship debuts in 2024):  Scarlet Lady ,  Valiant Lady , Resilient Lady and Brilliant Lady (scheduled to debut in 2024). The line sails to a variety of destinations around the globe, including popular spots in the Caribbean, Europe and the South Pacific. Virgin's ships have departed from ports in  Miami ;  San Juan, Puerto Rico ;  Barcelona , Spain;  Athens, Greece ;  Dubai, United Arab Emirates ;  Singapore ;  Melbourne, Australia ; and  Auckland, New Zealand  so far, and Virgin continues to switch up itineraries to sail from destinations around the world. Itineraries typically last anywhere from two to 15 nights.

Cruisers can enjoy numerous amenities on Virgin's ships, including swanky pools with plenty of lounge seating, group workout classes, unique evening performances and more. Meanwhile, foodies will appreciate the ships' 20-plus dining venues and specialty bars, and the fact that sodas, drip coffee and other "essential drinks" are included in the cruise fare. Shore excursion options (called “Shore Things” by the cruise line) range from snorkeling and exploring Mayan ruins in Mexico to cultural tours and beach club relaxation in the  Bahamas  to scenic bike rides and food tastings in  Corfu, Greece . Keep in mind that Virgin Voyages excursions are subject to change based on the time of year, weather, availability and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  One detail to note about Virgin Voyages is the line’s four ships are nearly identical and feature the same layout. This means you can focus on finding a cruise with the dates and itinerary you want without having to compare ships or unique amenities. –  Holly Johnson, Contributor

Before You Book

  • Note: To see Virgin Voyages' flexible deposit, cancellation and rebooking policies, visit its website .
  • Virgin Voyages requires a deposit of 20% of the cruise fare to confirm a booking. A reservation can be held for 24 hours without a deposit up to 45 days prior to sailing; bookings made within 44 days of the sailing (or less) require full payment at the time of booking.
  • Final payment is due 120 days before the trip departure date.
  • The cancellation policy varies depending on when you decide to cancel your cruise and how much of it you've paid. Depending on the timing, you may be eligible for a full refund of the deposit and any payments, a refund of any payments (but not the deposit) or a future cruise credit. If you cancel 44 days or less before your cruise, you are not eligible for any refund or credit. For more information, see the Cancellation Policies section on the Virgin Voyages terms and conditions page .
  • The cruise line allows only adults ages 18 or older on its cruises.
  • If you are pregnant, you must be less than 24 weeks by the end of the sailing to book a trip with Virgin Voyages.
  • At the time of booking, guests are asked to notify the cruise line of any special requirements or accommodation needed, including wheelchair access and service animal requests. Cruisers requiring a service animal must notify the cruise line no later than 21 days prior to departure. You also can call Virgin Voyages directly at 1-954-488-2955 to request assistance with these matters.

Before You Board

  • Cruisers will need a current passport that's valid for six months past the end of the voyage date.
  • Check-in for Virgin Voyages cruises takes place entirely on the line's mobile app. This means you don’t have to print cruise tickets or bring other printed documentation along.
  • Boarding is typically around 2 p.m. and disembarkation times vary by cruise. Virgin Voyages instructs travelers to refer to their booking confirmation for additional information on timing and notes the departure time listed means the exact time the ship leaves the dock, so cruisers should plan accordingly to arrive well in advance.
  • There are no specific luggage restrictions, but Virgin recommends limiting the number of bags you bring on board. If you are arriving at your departure destination by plane, be sure to consult airline luggage policies before your trip.
  • Cruisers can book shore excursions – which Virgin calls "Shore Things" – in the Sailor App at least 120 days prior to sailing. Travelers booked in RockStar Quarters will be able to book shore excursions 135 days ahead of sailing. Payment is due at the time of booking.
  • Passengers can secure dining reservations and entertainment starting 45 days before departure through the Sailor App or via a travel agent. Those booked in higher-level accommodations (Mega RockStar and RockStar Quarters) receive early access to reservations: 60 days prior to departure. Reservations for spa and wellness experiences can only be made on board.

Disclaimers about ship ratings: A ship’s Health Rating is based on vessel inspection scores published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If a ship did not receive a CDC score within 22 months prior to the calculation of its Overall Rating, its Health Rating appears as N/A; in such a case, the ship’s Overall Rating is calculated using the average Health Rating of all CDC-rated ships within the cruise line. All ship Traveler Ratings are based on ratings provided under license by Cruiseline.com.

Too hip or just right? Here's what it was really like sailing on Virgin Voyages for the first time

Summer Hull

With a nighttime show called "Never Sleep Alone" that awards golden condoms to participants, an onboard tattoo parlor and in-room music and lighting settings with options like "get it on" and "hangover mode," adults-only Virgin Voyages clearly caters to a kid-free crowd. Still, I had no idea what to expect as I stepped onto Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady .

Leading up to its maiden voyage in 2021, Virgin Voyages marketed itself as the cruise line for vacationers who otherwise weren't interested in traditional cruising. It aimed to appeal to those who were young and hip, wanted to party and craved an atmosphere without little kids running around.

Up until recently, I'd only ever sailed with Disney Cruise Line — and with my kids in tow. However, the Virgin Voyages concept has intrigued me since it launched.

Could Richard Branson's edgy Virgin Voyages truly be a perfect match for trips without kids? Or, would I feel completely out of place and overwhelmed by the rock star attitude featured throughout the cruise line's ships?

5 day virgin cruise

There was only one way to satisfy my curiosity — I booked a sailing on Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady.

Would the four-night cruise from Miami , with stops in both Key West, Florida, and Bimini, Bahamas, impress me enough to consider Virgin Voyages for future trips? Here's what I took away from the experience — and whether I'd cruise with Virgin Voyages again.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

There's a surprisingly diverse crowd on board

Like many people, I went into my cruise expecting most passengers (or "sailors," as the line calls them) to be millennials based on the flashy marketing I've seen from the line. Much to my surprise, though, there was a fair mix of people on my sailing.

Sure, there were millennials in their late 20s, 30s and even early 40s — including me, as I fall within the oldest bracket for that generation — but for every 27-year-old on board, there was also someone close to 70 years old like the cruise line's founder, Richard Branson.

5 day virgin cruise

Last year, Tom McAlpin, the president and CEO of Virgin Voyages, told TPG's resident cruise expert Gene Sloan that on early sailings of Scarlet Lady, the average passenger age was in the 50s, with plenty on board in their 60s and 70s. Based on my trip, I'd say that is still a pretty accurate representation.

After a few days on board, it became clear that what passengers had in common wasn't the age listed in their passports but rather the shared desire to have a good time. For the most part, my fellow cruisers were a diverse, inclusive and vibrant group of vacationers who were all eager to strike up conversations with others, regardless of age.

The adult-oriented persona isn't as extreme as you might expect

While there is a "Scarlet Night" celebration featuring lots of red lights and sailors donning their best scarlet-colored attire, the atmosphere on board is far from what you'll find in Amsterdam's Red Light District.

The entertainment we experienced fell somewhere between PG-13 and R, though we admittedly headed to bed by 11 p.m., so perhaps offerings leaned more X-rated as the night went on.

There were a couple of shows that I wouldn't want to see with, say, my parents, such as the previously mentioned "Never Sleep Alone." During that event, participants were awarded golden condoms that granted access to a post-show VIP party. However, those adult activities were easy to spot on the agenda, so you could easily skip them if you wanted a more tame cruise experience.

5 day virgin cruise

Beyond the evening entertainment, the vibe was similar to what you'd find in Las Vegas . The pools, restaurants, spa, casino and exercise classes all featured plenty of skimpy outfits and adult-oriented jokes and innuendos, though you could avoid anything that was too outside your comfort zone.

Dining options are plentiful (albeit hit or miss)

As far as I'm concerned, cruises are for eating — and Virgin Voyages offers numerous places to dine on Scarlet Lady.

In addition to featuring more than 20 grab-and-go spots and traditional sit-down eateries, there's the large Galley venue with various vendors arranged in a way similar to what you'd find in a food court or buffet.

Given all the options available, there were more places than we could try on our first Virgin Voyages cruise. Still, we sought to sample as much as possible during our four-night sailing.

5 day virgin cruise

If you're looking for a traditional sit-down experience, six onboard restaurants accept reservations for dinner: The Wake (which serves steaks and seafood), Razzle Dazzle Restaurant (a contemporary venue with vegetarian and American fare), The Test Kitchen (a laboratory-style eatery), Pink Agave (where gourmet Mexican cuisine is on the menu), Extra Virgin (an Italian-inspired venue) and Gunbae (which specializes in Korean barbecue).

5 day virgin cruise

Your cruise price covers dining at all of these spots, plus the quick bite options on the ship. However, some restaurants offer buy-up options labeled as "treat yourself" dishes that cost extra. For example, a half-dozen oysters at The Wake are going to set you back an additional $20, but the steak and clam chowder are 100% included.

5 day virgin cruise

Besides the main restaurants, there's the previously mentioned Galley, where you can savor everything from sushi roll bento boxes to 24-hour diner food. It is a hybrid of a grab-and-go and dine-in experience, meaning how you order will vary depending on which station you visit.

Additionally, you'll find casual spots that serve ice cream, pizza, poke bowls and more. You can also order room service; the food is complimentary, but there's a $5 delivery fee.

5 day virgin cruise

While I appreciated the array of options at our disposal, I found the quality of the food and service to be hit or miss. Some restaurants I loved so much that I went back a second time; at others, I took a solitary bite of food before deciding to move on.

For example, the tuna poke bowl I excitedly tried at the Sun Club Cafe was patently awful, and the sushi rolls at The Galley were disappointing, reminding me of what I'd find in my Texas grocery store.

5 day virgin cruise

Similarly, The Wake was lackluster, to say the least. While some fellow cruisers we met enjoyed the restaurant, it was extremely underwhelming during our visit, serving the worst shrimp and grits I've ever had. Not to mention, the service was slow and seafood options were surprisingly limited for a restaurant that claims to specialize in steak and seafood.

5 day virgin cruise

It wasn't all mediocre, though.

Gunbae's Korean fare was not only delicious but served in a setting that was an absolute blast to experience. It really captured how Virgin markets itself by offering staff-led drinking games and communal seating that encourages socializing. We had such a great time there that when we walked into a quiet and sparsely populated restaurant on our last night, we turned around and went back to Gunbae for a repeat experience that was just as memorable as our first visit.

5 day virgin cruise

Pink Agave was another standout restaurant. It didn't offer as much of a party vibe as Gunbae, but it still felt lively and served a solid selection of Mexican dishes.

The cabins are decent but could be improved

Unless you splurge on a pricy RockStar suite , you'll be placed in a cabin that looks modern but otherwise seems fairly standard, other than the fancy mood lighting.

5 day virgin cruise

Our Sea Terrace cabin was spotless and stayed true to the modern theme featured throughout the ship, but it wasn't the most comfortable spot on the whole.

While we enjoyed the red outdoor hammock that was shockingly comfortable and not merely a cute, Instagram-worthy gimmick, as well as the selection of in-room movies, which ranged from the original "Top Gun" to newer releases like "Elvis," the rest of the cabin left a lot to be desired.

5 day virgin cruise

The bathroom was quite small, to the point where it bordered on being a claustrophobic experience.

5 day virgin cruise

The bed was also rather hard and uncomfortable for my personal tastes, so much so that by the last night of our trip, I was ready to return to my more inviting setup at home.

Additionally, unlike Disney Cruise Line, where cabin attendants make it a point to get to know you and your preferences, Virgin Voyages lacked the same personalized service. I never interacted with a person in charge of our cabin, as it would be serviced while we were out (after pushing a button that sent the request to the crew) by a person that, to us, remained nameless and faceless.

The private beach club is top-notch

While other ports of call vary based on the sailing, a constant for Scarlet Lady is a stop at its private beach club in the Bahamas.

Situated on the island of Bimini, this spot was, in a word, fabulous.

5 day virgin cruise

Although it's not quite a private island like Royal Caribbean's CocoCay and Disney Cruise Line's Castaway Cay, that doesn't really matter. You'll feel like you're in an exclusive setting after taking the open-air tram from the ship's dock to the modern, beautiful beach club.

5 day virgin cruise

The club offers a couple of large pools, ample lounge chairs and towels, plenty of bars and a picture-perfect beach. A swim-up bar would have been nice, but that's being picky.

5 day virgin cruise

During your visit to the club, any drinks you order are charged to the ship, so bar tab credits you have during your cruise will work here, too. The food, which ranged from snapper steamed in a banana leaf to a salad featuring Bahamian mango and macadamia, is included, though some dishes were better than others. I loved mixing the curry, rice and snapper I ordered all together to create a pretty tasty bowl.

On-island entertainment is available as well, though I can't speak to what happened as the afternoon wore on, as we hit our sun quota by midday. However, rumor has it there was a pool float party that occurred after our departure.

You won't find the usual cruise experience on board

Virgin Voyages does not simply give its amenities and activities quirky names — like "Lick Me Til Ice Cream" for the onboard ice cream shop. The overall experience is a bit different than what you'll come across on traditional cruise lines.

To start, there are no drink packages — and that was a big complaint I heard on the ship from folks who were used to sailing with other lines that offer unlimited drink inclusion options . Instead, Virgin Voyages offers a bar tab that you can load before you sail. Sometimes bar tab credit is also included with the sailing as part of a promotion.

Blessedly, there are no keycards and associated lanyards to keep up with but rather adjustable bracelets that look like friendship bracelets from middle school. Unlike the ones from your childhood, these have built-in technology that opens your cabin door, allows you to charge things to your account and more.

There are also no set dining times, restaurant rotations or dress codes, though you can — and should — make dinner reservations. As a result, you can dine at whichever restaurant you prefer at a time that works for you.

Other than the cabin cleanings, the crew was more noticeable, too. We saw crew members on the basketball courts, eating in The Galley and just generally out and about around the ship even when they didn't appear to be on the clock, which helped create a more relaxed atmosphere.

Additionally, we didn't have to worry about extra tips, taxes or fees. Tips for the crew, spa services and more are factored into your cruise price, so what you see on the menu really is what you can expect to pay.

Another noticeable (and welcome) difference was how laid-back the line was with announcements and disembarking. Outside of a welcome announcement from the captain on the first day, we didn't hear another peep. On the last day, you just had to be off the ship by a respectable 10:45 a.m., so you could still go to a workout class, play some air hockey and have brunch without feeling rushed to depart.

Bottom line

Despite some underwhelming aspects here and there, such as some design choices we didn't love and a very crowded pool area, we had a great time.

5 day virgin cruise

The late-night spicy ramen, social atmosphere and fun ports more than made up for any hiccups. For us, it was like a four-day long party without the hangover.

In fact, we had such a great time that before disembarking Scarlet Lady, we put a $300 deposit down on a future Virgin Voyages sailing so we could receive $900 in discounts and credits the next time around.

It's safe to say that overall, the cruise was absolutely worth it — and one we can't wait to do all over again.

a cruise ship in the water

If you’d quite literally like to sail away from it all, then Virgin Voyages has a pretty great deal you should check out!

Virgin Red just launched a new limited-time promotion and is offering 5-night Virgin Voyages Caribbean cruises for 80,000 Virgin points. In addition, there is also the option to book a 7-night Mediterranean or an 8-night Caribbean cruise for 100,000 Virgin points.

a beach with palm trees and a large round object

Virgin Voyages Promo Details

This deal is valid on sailings from either Miami or Barcelona, and is eligible for all sailings (minus 3 blackout dates) before June 30, 2023. FYI no end date for the promo has been announced, so I would book this hot deal ASAP if you’re interested!

For your 80K or 100K Virgin points, you’ll get balcony accommodations for two people on Virgin Voyages’ Miami-based Scarlet Lady or the Barcelona-based Valiant Lady in a Sea Terrace cabin. That’s a big step up from the ship’s basic Insider cabins, which are tiny, interior rooms with no windows. And it’s also better than a Sea View cabin, which only has a porthole window.

And just like when booking a Virgin Voyages cruise with cash, even with this points deal you’ll get all of your meals included, as well as free Wi-Fi, gratuities, soft drinks, and group fitness classes.

For reference, Sea Terrace cabins on the 8-night sailings out of Miami between now and June start at around $3,250 for two, inclusive of taxes and fees. Some sailings over popular weeks are listed at even higher prices. So this is a nice return and value for only 100,000 Virgin points!

The Itineraries

Virgin Voyages offers some pretty unique ports of call on its itineraries, which makes this offer even that much more exciting!

Itineraries available as part of this deal include:

  • 8-night Eastern Antilles sailings from Miami to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Croix; and the Virgin Voyages Beach Club at Bimini, Bahamas.
  • 7-night The Irresistible Med sailings (from May 2023) from Barcelona to Toulon, France; Carrara, Italy; Ajaccio, Corsica; and Ibiza, Spain.
  • 7-night French Daze & Ibiza Nights sailings (from May 2023) from Barcelona to Marseille, France; Cannes, France; Palma de Mallorca, Spain; and Ibiza, Spain.
  • 5-night Riviera Maya sailings from Miami to Cozumel, Mexico, and the Virgin Voyages Beach Club at Bimini, Bahamas.
  • 5-night Dominican Daze sailings from Miami to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, and the Virgin Voyages Beach Club at Bimini, Bahamas.

Additional Promo Details

There are a few caveats to keep in mind with this promotion though:

  • There are a limited number of cabins available as part of this offer
  • Sailings departing on March 12th, April 14th and May 17th are not available as part of this promotion
  • Passengers will be assigned a Sea Terrace or Limited View Sea Terrace balcony cabin (based on availability)
  • The points price is per cabin, whether there are one or two people traveling
  • All passengers must be over 18 years of age, as Virgin Voyages is an adults-only cruise line
  • Each Virgin Red member can book up to four cabins as part of the offer, but the booking party must all be booked on the same cruise and they must check in at the same time
  • The Virgin Red member responsible for the booking must present their Virgin Red app to verify their eligibility before boarding
  • Cabins booked under the offer cannot be upgraded, unless Virgin Voyages subsequently offers the chance to do so

How to Book

Virgin Atlantic  will always be the crown jewel given its  Upper Class Flights  and  upgrades , but other Virgin Group businesses are starting to get aggressive with their points offers via Virgin Red.

Right now it’s Voyages, but even things like  Virgin Limited Edition and Virgin Hotels  are making moves. Which means there are lots of reasons to take this new currency seriously.

Virgin Red vs. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Virgin has two different rewards programs. One is the legacy Virgin Atlantic Flying Club , and the other is the new Virgin Red program, which offers redemption options for way more than just flight awards.

When joining Virgin Red, you can link your Virgin Atlantic account and then all points will appear together in both programs. In other words, you’ll have equal access to all of your points regardless of whether you log into Virgin Red or Virgin Atlantic.

Don’t have enough Virgin points to take advantage of this offer — or any at all? You can still get in on this deal by transferring points from one of major credit card programs. You can transfer points directly to Virgin Red from Bilt Rewards and Capital One , and you can transfer points to the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program from the  American Express Membership Rewards ,  Chase Ultimate Rewards  and  Citi ThankYou  programs.

If you don’t have a Virgin Red account yet, or haven’t linked your Flying Club account to Virgin Red yet, it’s easy to do. After signing up for a new Virgin Red account, or after signing in to your current Virgin Red account, simply add your Flying Club number in the “Link accounts” section of the app under the “Account” icon.

Redeeming Virgin Points To Lock In This Promo

If you want to book one of these awesome Virgin Voyages cruise deals, you’ll need to fire up the  Virgin Red app  or visit Virgin Red’s website. You’ll find the offer for both the 5 night and 7/8 night cruises, and once you choose your voyage of choice, you’ll tap “Redeem” to secure your spot. This will also deduct the 80K or 100K points from your Virgin Red account.

a large cruise ship in the ocean

Within 72 hours, a member of the Virgin Red team will then email you an “Access Key, which you will then use to book a cabin directly on the Virgin Voyages website.

And luckily, there is an upcoming 30% transfer bonus from Citi to Virgin Atlantic (which starts on 2/19 and runs through 3/18). I’m not sure if I personally would wait that long to book this deal, since it could sell out before then. But, if you’re willing to risk it, or if you don’t have enough Citi point to book this offer, then this could be an option to score a cruise at an even more discounted rate.

It looks like there are about 17 voyages total available for this promo (see screenshots below). And how good of a deal you can score can differ quite a bit depending on the sailing that you choose. But, almost every itinerary seems to yield a return of at least 2 cents per point in value.

Keep in mind that you may still be on the hook for a few hundred dollars — depending on the cruise chosen — since it is not clearly stated in the promotion materials if port taxes and fees are included in this promotional rate.

Final Verdict

This new Virgin Red limited-time promotion is a great deal! To be able to get a balcony stateroom for two people on a 5, 7 or 8 night Virgin Voyages cruises for only 80K or 100K points is a solid return. Plus, for those who have been wanting to check out this new cruise line, this is a killer way to do so with little-to-no, out-of-pocket costs. I’m sure this deal will sell out fast, so I would transfer points ASAP and lock this promo in before it’s too late!

Looking for Xmas and new year cruise with premier economy or business class flight with out side cabin with balcony

I was able to book a 15-night transatlantic cruise starting from Miami to Barcelona on 04/22 with the same access key(100k). I even called to make sure this was valid and they confirmed it. That’s a heck of a deal.

Wow, that’s awesome! Great redemption value!

Our 5-day cruises combine visits to beautiful beaches in ports like Nassau, Bimini, and Cozumel with two serene days at sea, where you’ll have the chance to revel in all of the spectacular venues and amenities available on our award-winning ships. Spend your days exploring tropical islands and festive beach towns. Later, unwind onboard and enjoy world-class dining, unlimited entertainment options, and impeccable service.

Itineraries

Featured ports of call, nassau, bahamas.

Experience a tropical paradise in Nassau, where white-sand beaches and turquoise waters are found at every turn. Spend your day exploring the city’s bright colors, mouthwatering cuisine, and heavenly beaches. Snorkel over coral reefs, surrounded by tropical fish and maybe even sea turtles. Shop for gifts in the famous Straw Market, where artisans sell handmade goods. For an indulgent day, head to the Atlantis Resort, a luxurious complex with glorious beaches and thrilling water slides.

Bimini, Bahamas

Sleepy Bimini is surrounded by pristine beaches, dazzling reefs, and thrilling wrecks. Snorkel around the semi-submerged Sapona shipwreck, teeming with tropical fish. If you’ve developed a taste for conch, a Bahamian specialty, join a conch cruise to see how locals free dive for the shells. Once you’re back on the island, try delicious conch fritters for yourself.

Cozumel, Mexico

You’ll find it easy to relax on the island of Cozumel, an untouched slice of paradise just off the coast of Mexico. Lounge under the sun on pristine beaches with powder-soft sand like Playa Palancar and El Cielo, which fittingly translates to “heaven.” Dive into crystal-clear waters and spot starfish, sea turtles, and dazzling coral reefs. Or embark on an unforgettable day trip to the nearby ruins of Tulum or Chichen Itza, where you’ll walk on the former grounds of an ancient Mayan citadel.

Key West, Florida

Explore quirky Key West, a tiny Florida town that packs a large punch. Key West is known for its laid-back attitude, which is on full display in famous Duval Street, where you can dip in and out of lively restaurants and bars and try a slice of deliciously tangy Key lime pie. Key West is also the former home of Ernest Hemingway, whose Spanish colonial house is now a museum dedicated to the celebrated American writer.

What to Pack for a Virgin Voyages Cruise

Virgin Voyages are the new kids on the block when it comes to cruising and they are doing things very differently.  We loved the freedom and the anything goes attitude on the Virgin ships, so you can literally wear what you want. However, they do have some theme nights which you can join in and are described below.

Virgin Voyages Scarlet Night

Scarlet Night is exactly what you would expect and you are encouraged to wear anything red. Whether it is a red shirt, complete outfit, or scarlet dress or if you just want a flash of red with just a tie or handbag that is fine. As you can see from the photo we just wore a red shirt and I wore a red cardigan. But if you don’t want to take part then that’s fine too!

Paul and I agave scarlet night virgin voyages scarlet lady what to pack

Pjyama Party

Virgin Voyages also have a pyjama party which normally takes place in the Dockhouse. So if you fancy packing your nightwear to party in until the early hours then make sure you do!

Virgin are a fun cruise line, and definitely different from anything else out there. We throughly enjoyed our time on Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady , do visit our Virgin Voyages page to find out what cruising with Virgin Voyages is really like!

Sunday Lunch at the Edgemoor Inn, Gloucestershire

5 day virgin cruise

I went on a luxury cruise for the first time. It was worth the $6,000 price tag for 5 reasons.

  • Last summer, I embarked on my first luxury cruise with the adults-only cruise line Virgin Voyages.
  • I booked a seven-day Mediterranean sailing in a cabin with a balcony for $5,900.
  • The ship's unique design, VIP-worthy cabins, and surprising activities made it worth the price.

Insider Today

I've had my fair share of luxury travel experiences, from staying at celebrity-loved hotels to spending one night on the Orient Express of the 21st century .

If I've learned one thing from these lavish trips, it's that some high-end offerings are worth the cost — and some are not.

In 2023, I took a luxury trip that was completely worth the high price tag — a $5,900, adults-only Mediterranean cruise with Virgin Voyages , a cruise line that's already received multiple awards for everything from cabins to ships after just three years of operations.

I took the seven-day cruise from Barcelona on the Valiant Lady ship , which has a maximum of 2,700 guests. We sailed to ports in Italy, France, and Spain.

Six months after my cruise, I'm still thinking about the luxury details that made it worth the price.

I took a luxury, adults-only cruise with Virgin Voyages last summer.

5 day virgin cruise

It was my second-ever cruise, following a seven-day voyage aboard Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas .

After that first cruise, I wanted to experience an upscale version of the vacation style. And I booked with Virgin Voyages because it's an adults-only cruise line.

From the moment I stepped on board, I marveled at the cohesive, modern design with artistic features.

5 day virgin cruise

The 912-foot-long ship was stacked with 17 decks full of staterooms, venues, restaurants, and activities.

Every room felt thoughtfully decorated with sleek furniture, unique sculptures, and multicolored lights.

I noticed design themes throughout the ship. The brand's signature bold red color was always in sight. Often, it was contrasted with other bold colors, from pinks and greens to blues and purples. Most spaces also featured iridescent panels, adding a rainbow glow that made me feel coated in luxury.

Exploring the ship felt like wandering through a work of art — or being in a movie about the ultrawealthy. There was no shortage of Instagram-worthy photo ops to take selfies while feeling like a true VIP.

Even the cabin was sleek in style and packed with VIP details.

5 day virgin cruise

I booked a mid-tier cabin with a sea terrace that cost $5,910. It was a step above a stateroom with just a window and a step below a suite.

As soon as I stepped into the 225-square-foot room, I was blown away by how spacious it felt. Modern furniture matched the design style of the communal decks, and the cabin was full of space-saving hacks.

A sectional couch transformed into a comfy, queen-sized bed. A closet hidden behind an iridescent curtain revealed drawers and empty storage bins.

There were also high-end details that made me feel wrapped in luxury from morning to night, like a rainfall shower head and a tablet for controlling mood lighting, curtains, and TV entertainment.

But the best part of the room was the balcony . When booking the cabin, I simply hoped for a wide-open view to stand in front of while feeling the breeze in my face.

It was much more than that.

On the terrace, I found a small table with two chairs and a large, cozy hammock. Spending time in the outdoor space watching sunsets, spotting passing islands, and getting a preview of each port stop before disembarking made the room worth the price to me.

On communal decks, I experienced top-tier relaxation thanks to the lack of children.

5 day virgin cruise

Virgin Voyages cruises are only for guests who are 18 or older. Since I was traveling with a partner — and I don't have kids — I was excited to lounge on quiet, calm pool decks, dine at relaxing restaurants, and have access to a range of activities for grown-ups.

And that's exactly what I got.

The ship's activities geared toward adults were surprising and fun.

5 day virgin cruise

The ship was packed with indoor and outdoor activities for adults. An indoor game room was full of long tables, board games, and puzzles. An arcade had virtual racing and retro machines, igniting a sense of nostalgia.

Outdoors, there was a deck with two large pools as well as several plunge pools.

All of these offerings were delightful yet unsurprising to me.

But on a cruise ship with no kids, I never expected to find a playground for adults .

On one of the ship's top decks, I found grown-up-sized swings and seesaws, a foosball table, a basketball court, and a giant chess set. I had so much fun playing like a kid with no child in sight.

Next to the playground was a slew of 1920s-inspired athletic equipment, from a boxing ring and punching bags to benches and bars for strength training.

While I steered clear of the ship's indoor gym because I don't like working out on vacation , I enjoyed kicking and punching boxing bags. It was so unique to exercise I do at home that I forgot I was working out at all.

Each port stop was unique and memorable.

5 day virgin cruise

Sailing through the Mediterranean, there's a wide range of port stops. We stopped at four — and each had standout features that set it apart from the rest.

Perhaps the most unique stop was Marina di Carrara, Italy. I took an excursion through a marble mountain range to see quarries where artists like Michelangelo traveled for the finest materials.

But the port that surprised me most was the last — Ibiza.

I expected nothing but a nightclub scene from the " party capital of the world ," so I was amazed by the city's vibrant buildings and ocean views while wandering up and down hilly streets. I was mesmerized by Ibiza's old town, where I saw cobblestone streets, Renaissance cathedrals, and 16th-century walls lined with canons.

Standing over the Bastion of Santa Lucia in Ibiza during the final sunset of my trip, I felt like I was in a storybook. As I soaked up the island view, I thought about how special the entire voyage felt — from the destinations to the ship itself.

Looking back, it was totally worth the price tag, and I can't wait to sail with Virgin Voyages again.

Virgin Voyages, Carnival alter itineraries to avoid Red Sea amid continued attacks

More cruise lines are rerouting ships to avoid the Red Sea, amid continued attacks in the area.

Virgin Voyages has scrapped upcoming plans to sail its Resilient Lady ship in Australia. The vessel will offer Caribbean cruises instead.

The line said the "significant and ongoing conflict puts unacceptable risks for safe passage through the region" for guests, crew and the vessel. "As a result, we have been left with no choice but to cancel our 2024/25 voyage season plans for Resilient Lady, impacting the late 2024 and early 2025 repositioning voyages between Europe and Australia and a second sailing season in Australian waters," the line said in an emailed statement.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

After wrapping up its Mediterranean season on Oct. 20, the ship will head to San Juan, Puerto Rico to operate seven, eight, 10 and 11-night voyages. The sailings will visit destinations including St. Maarten, St. Vincent and Dominica.

"We are currently reviewing Resilient Lady’s repositioning routes from Athens to San Juan, and we will share these as soon as they’re ready, but they will feature stunning ports including Catania, Casablanca, and Tenerife," Virgin added.

Passengers booked on impacted itineraries can rebook on a different voyage or get a full refund. Virgin is also "working through options to return to Australia and the Asia Pacific region once regional repositioning opportunities become more tenable." If the line is able to return in 2025, guests with existing bookings will receive priority.

The line previously altered a repositioning cruise on Resilient Lady departing from Sydney, Australia, on March 27, impacting the journey’s three legs. The vessel will now sail from Sydney to Cape Town until April 17; from Cape Town to Barcelona through May 4; and from Barcelona to Athens through May 9.

Resilient Lady was originally scheduled to sail from Sydney to Singapore; from Singapore to Dubai; and from Dubai to Athens (guests could book one or multiple segments of the 43-day voyage).

“The safety of our passengers and crew is our number one priority,” a spokesperson for the line said in an earlier statement. “Like many other cruise brands, we have been watching the current conflict in the Middle East closely, connecting regularly with global security experts to consider the impacts to the repositioning voyages planned for Resilient Lady in 2024. We remain concerned about potential escalations in this part of the world over the next 12 months and the risk that this presents for safe passage through the region.”

Guests booked on the original three legs “will have guaranteed spots on these sailings at no additional cost and a price protection commitment in place,” the spokesperson said. They can also opt for a future cruise credit based on the amount they paid or a full refund.

The Iranian-backed Houthis have launched dozens of attacks on commercial and naval vessels in the Red Sea in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war . The Yemen-based militants have claimed they are showing solidarity with the Palestinians (though experts say their motivations are more complex ).

What other cruise lines have changed itineraries to avoid the Red Sea?

The news comes after Carnival Corp., the parent company of major cruise lines including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Holland America Line, said late last month that it would alter itineraries for a dozen ships set to transit the Red Sea through May.

“The company has not seen an impact on booking trends due to the Red Sea situation and has no other Red Sea transits until November 2024,” Carnival Corp. said in a news release . The changes will impact seven of its brands, but a spokesperson declined to share specifics on which lines and cruises were affected.

Silversea Cruises and MSC Cruises also previously canceled sailings to avoid the area.

A look at Taurus missiles, the weapon at the heart of a leaked audio and Russian-German tensions

FILE -In this photo provided by South Korea Defense Ministry, a Taurus missile flies during a drill off the country’s western coast in South Korea, Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017. The German government on Monday vehemently rejected allegations that Russia’s leak of a conversation by high-ranking German military officers was an indication that Germany was preparing a war against Russia, while at the same time it sought to contain the domestic fallout from the leak and promised a quick investigation into how it was possible that a conversation by top German military personnel could be intercepted and published. BERLIN (AP) — On the day that Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was laid to rest in Moscow, Russian state media leaked an audio recording of German military officers discussing the hypothetical use of Taurus long-range missiles in Ukraine.

The conversation on a sensitive subject was never meant to be public, and the leak embarrassed Germany and raised concerns about the security of its communications.

Furious with Germany, Moscow leveled threats in response.

“If nothing is done, and the German people do not stop this, then there will be dire consequences first and foremost for Germany itself,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Monday.

In her retort, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said, “If Russia had not brutally attacked this country, Ukraine would not have to defend itself,” according to the dpa news agency.

In fact, the German officers discussed sending the Taurus missiles only in theory. Germany has not approved deploying the weapons despite months of pressure from Ukraine.

Here is a look at the fallout from what German media are calling the “wiretapping affair” and the Taurus missiles at the heart of the tensions.

WHAT ARE TAURUS MISSILES AND WHAT CAN THEY DO?

Equipped with stealth technology that makes them less visible to detection, the missiles have a range of up to 500 kilometers (310 miles), which would help Ukraine to put pressure on Russia in the Black Sea and elsewhere.

The German- and Swedish-made missiles would be able to reach targets deep in Russia from Ukrainian soil. (Taurus is shorthand for Target Adaptive Unitary and dispenser Robotic Ubiquity System.) In Latin, taurus means “bull.”

Ukraine has been asking Germany for the missiles to complement the long-range Storm Shadow missiles sent by Britain and France’s nearly identical Scalp cruise missiles.

The U.K. announced last spring that it was sending Storm Shadows, which have a range of more than 250 kilometers (155 miles) and give Ukraine capacity to strike well behind the front lines, including in Russia-occupied Crimea. Ukraine pledged not to use the missiles to attack Russia itself.

France followed Britain by sending its Scalp missiles, giving assurances that they would not be capable of hitting Russian soil. Paris recently announced the delivery of 40 additional Scalp missiles.

WHAT IS GERMANY’S POSITION ON SENDING THE MISSILES TO UKRAINE?

Germany is the second-biggest supplier of military aid to Ukraine after the United States and is further stepping up support this year. But German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has refused to send the Taurus missiles. Last week, he said sending the missiles would pose a risk of his country becoming directly involved in the war .

“German soldiers must at no point and in no place be linked to targets this system reaches,” he said last week.

Some members of the conservative opposition, and even some in his socially liberal three-party coalition, want to send the missiles to Ukraine. But the idea is not popular with the public.

German media have suggested that by not allowing the Taurus weapons to be sent to Ukraine the unpopular chancellor was trying to distinguish himself domestically as “Friedenskanzler” or “peace chancellor” ahead of June elections to the European Parliament.

“Many people are afraid the war could spread. Scholz has long been aware of this sentiment,” the news magazine Der Spiegel wrote Friday. “He wants to show them: I am aware of you and your worries.”

For military strategists, there are other concerns.

Gustav Gressel, a senior policy fellow with the European Council on Foreign Relations, wrote in a note earlier this year that while the U.K. and France are already developing successors to their Storm Shadows and Scalps, Germany does not have yet have a successor to the Taurus.

Germans fear that their stocks of Taurus missiles could be depleted, he argued, and that “Russians would see the missile in operation in Ukraine and gain insights into the missile’s countermeasures and stealth characteristics.”

WHAT’S IN THE LEAKED AUDIO?

The 38-minute recording was published by Margarita Simonyan, chief editor of Russian state-funded television channel RT, on social media Friday, the same day Navalny was laid to rest after his still-unexplained death two weeks earlier in an Arctic penal colony. It surfaced just weeks before Russia’s presidential election.

In the audio, the head of Germany’s air force, Ingo Gerhartz, can be heard discussing deployment scenarios for Taurus missiles in Ukraine with three colleagues ahead of a meeting with Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.

The conversation took place Feb. 19, according to Simonyan.

The four military officers discuss how Taurus missiles could be used by Kyiv against invading Russian forces and how Germany would need to support Ukraine technically.

At the start of the WebEx conversation, there is a lot of small talk. One participant connected from Singapore. “It is quite humid here,” he says.

The four then start preparing a briefing on the Taurus weapon system for Pistorius, seeking to coordinate their messages and agreeing to prepare some slides to better visualize the situation.

“If we ever decide politically to support Ukraine with it (the Taurus missiles), how would all of this work?” one officer asked. “We should not only talk about problems but also about solutions.”

The four then discuss various issues that would need to be taken into consideration, including delivery, training and timing. They go into detail about what Ukraine would theoretically need the system for, such as targeting “a bridge in the east” or an “ammunition depot.”

In the course of the discussion, it becomes clear that they are referring to the Kerch bridge linking Russia and occupied Crimea. One of the officials says that training to target the bridge, which is “as big as an airfield,” would likely take longer.

They also discuss potential red lines for German politicians, including a desire to avoid the military being seen as directly involved.

The officers say the rapid deployment of Taurus missiles would only be possible with the participation of German soldiers — and that training Ukrainian soldiers to deploy the Taurus on their own would be possible, but would take months.

The recording makes clear that the German government has not given its OK for the delivery of the cruise missiles sought by Ukraine.

HOW HAS GERMANY REACTED?

German officials have not claimed that the audio is fabricated, which has widely been taken to mean that the recording is authentic.

For hours after the audio was published Friday by Russian media, German officials did not react at all. Then on Saturday, the Defense Ministry said it was investigating, and Scholz called it a “very serious matter” that required quick clarification.

Defense Minister Pistorius followed up Sunday by denouncing the leak as an act of “information warfare” against the West and said the aim was to sow discord within Germany. He said it was no coincidence that the recording leaked on the day of Navalny’s funeral.

“It is a hybrid attack aimed at disinformation,” Pistorius said. “This is clearly about undermining our unity.”

Gera reported from Warsaw and Liechtenstein from Vienna.
