transylvania halloween tour

Really enjoyed the Sighisoara party over the Bran castle party on which we participated last year. Great guide, fun trip, great food! Sighisoara hotel was great, but the one at Bran castle was very dated and in need of updates. Overall would give it a 5 rating from 5 possible, loved our trip!

transylvania halloween tour

Best Halloween I’ve ever had During the Halloween tour we had 3 different parties in 3 different locations across Transylvania. I highly recommend this tour if you want to learn more about Dracula. Best Halloween ever, and I think the people that I met made it even greater!

transylvania halloween tour

I honestly could not have imagined how amazing studying Dracula in Romania would be. Of course, I knew a lot about the literary Dracula and I loved being immersed in the world of the novel. But I had no idea how much I would enjoy the history behind Vlad the Impaler. That was really fascinating for me. I loved going to all the different cities and being immersed in the culture, and it definitely made me much more interested in and open to the information and the stories Stefan was telling us. My favorite part was eating in the house where Dracula was born and Stefan telling us the stories of Vlad the Impaler’s deeds in that room. We did so much in so short a time, and I loved it. Also, Stefan was absolutely amazing and we all adored him. He really made the trip more than we could have ever asked for and he went above and beyond for us at every turn. We’re really thankful to both of you for making this experience so fantastic.

Advice for US citizens traveling in Romania

Before you go write down contact details for the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate to carry with you in case of emergency while traveling. US Embassy in Romania 4-6, Dr. Liviu Librescu Blvd. District 1, Bucharest 015118 Romania Telephone: (+40) 21 200-3300 https://ro.usembassy.gov/

Notify your bank and credit card companies of your travel, and check exchange rates. Some banks are blocking your credit card payment when a transaction occur from abroad.

Safeguard Your Documents!

Make two copies of all your travel documents in case of emergency. Leave one copy with a trusted friend or relative at home and carry the other separately from your original documents. To help prevent theft, do not carry your passport in your back pocket, and keep it separate from your money.

Passport Validity Three months beyond departure date. We recommend a minimum of six months validity after entry date

• Children’s passports: Passports issued for children under age 16 are valid for only five years, not 10 years like adult passports. Check passport expiration dates carefully and renew early.

Visas Not required for stays under 90 days

Consent for Travel with Minors  If you are traveling alone with children, foreign border officials may require custody documents or notarized written consent from the other parent. Health Insurance: Many foreign medical facilities and providers require cash payment up front and do not accept U.S. insurance plans. Medicare does not provide coverage outside of the United States. Check your U.S. health care policy to see if it will cover you overseas. If not, consider buying supplemental insurance. Make sure the insurance you purchase covers any special medical needs or risks you anticipate on your trip.

Currency restrictions Entry: Amounts over 10,000 Euros or equivalent must be declared For exit:  Amounts over 10,000 Euros or equivalent must be declared

Safety There were no terrorist acts in Romania. However credible information indicates terrorist groups continue plotting attacks in Europe. All European countries remain potentially vulnerable to attacks from transnational terrorist organizations.

The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules [with regards to best practices and safety inspections] are regularly enforced, though some tourism-related activities (such as rock climbing and extreme sports) are less regulated than in the U.S. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available in near major cities.

Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. Medical treatment in Romania is not up to western standards. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance

Reported types of crime include: • Robbery, pick pocketing, internet scams, and credit card fraud are the most commonly reported crimes. • Organized groups of criminals, sometimes including minors, operate in train stations, trains, subways, and busses. • Money exchange schemes often involve individuals posing as plainclothes policemen who approach you, flash a badge, and ask for your passport and wallet. Insist on the presence of a uniformed police officer and request that any issues be resolved at the police station. • If traveling on an overnight train, travel with a companion and in the highest class available. • Do not leave your personal belongings unattended; stow them securely out of sight. • Use ATMs located inside banks. You should check ATM machines for any evidence of tampering before use. • Be extra cautious of your surroundings if using an internet café. • Use cash wherever possible in lieu of credit cards.

Laws Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. Special Circumstances: • Romania is situated in a seismically active region and has a history of devastating earthquakes, with the greatest risk occurring in Bucharest. • Mountainous areas of the country can be subject to torrential rains and flash floods, especially in the spring and summer months. • Streets and sidewalks are often icy and hazardous during winter. • Avoid contact with stray dogs. • Travelers’ checks are of limited use, but ATMs (“bancomats” in Romanian) are widely available.

LGBT Travelers  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Romania. However, the annual gay pride parades in Bucharest have been the scene of violent protests in past years.

Health Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas.

Medical Insurance  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription. • Basic medical supplies are limited in Romania, especially outside of major cities. • Hospitals often lack nursing care and assistance for the elderly. • Most prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications are available in Romania but are often sold under different names. • Response times for emergency services vary widely depending on the region of the country and nature of emergency. It is strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Road Conditions and Safety  Though Romanian traffic laws are very strict, road accidents are a real and dangerous threat for U.S. citizens visiting Romania. According to the European Union Road Federation, Romania has the highest per-vehicle rate of road fatalities of any country in the EU, a rate similar with USA.

If you chose to drive in Romania, practice defensive driving techniques. While major streets in larger cities and major inter-city roads are generally in fair to good condition, many secondary roads are in poor repair, unpaved, poorly lit, narrow, and lacking marked lanes. • Mountain roads are particularly dangerous when wet or covered with snow or ice. Winter snow removal is intermittent. • It is common for pedestrians, animals, cyclists, and horse-drawn carts to share a road with motor vehicles, especially in rural areas. • Parked vehicles often block sidewalks, forcing pedestrians to walk in the streets. • Cross only at crosswalks and exercise vigilance as crosswalks are generally poorly marked. • Local drivers often ignore traffic lights and crosswalk signs. Maintain vigilance when driving to avoid hitting pedestrians in the streets. Traffic Laws: Romanian traffic laws are very strict. • The traffic police can confiscate any form of a driver's license or permit for 1-3 months and request payment of fines at the time of the infraction. • Police are required to give all drivers involved in an accident a breathalyzer test on the scene. • Refusal to take a breathalyzer test may result in criminal penalties regardless of whether or not alcohol was involved. • Wearing a seat belt is mandatory. • Children under 12 years of age may not be transported in the front seat. • Use of mobile phones while driving is banned, with exception of hands free systems.

U.S. citizens arriving in Romania for stays up to 90 days may use their U.S. state drivers’ licenses (DL) along with an International Driving Permit. The U.S. Department of State has authorized two organizations to issue international permits to those who hold valid U.S. driver’s licenses: the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance.

If entering Romania by vehicle you need to purchase a road tax badge known as “rovinieta” at the border crossing point. Proof of insurance and a car registration document are required when purchasing the "rovinieta." Drivers of vehicles registered abroad who are not in possession of a valid international insurance document must buy short-term insurance at the border.

Roadside help, vehicle assistance, towing services: Dial 9271 Ambulance, fire brigade, police: Dial 112 .

transylvania halloween tour

Grasa Victoria – January 18, 2019 :

This was the best Halloween I’ve ever had! Romania is beautiful especially the views of Transylvania. We visited important places of Vlad Tepes history and our guide was very knowledgeable. During Halloween we had 3 different parties in 3 different locations across Transylvania and each was different from the other. Our group was under 20 people which made it easy to make new friends during the trip. I highly recommend this tour if you want to learn more about Dracula

AMAZING EXPERIENCE – This trip has to be on everyone’s bucket list!!! We booked the 7 day Halloween in Transylvania and added on the 2 day Halloween at Bran Castle. Our main reason for booking was the Halloween parties. We traveled with another couple and booked direct with Transylvania Live via the internet. Initially we were skeptical at doing this but Hertha and her team were so helpful and patiently answered all of our questions and emails promptly and our trip went smoothly and exactly to plan. Our small group of 16 was the perfect size – it gave us an intimate, personalized tour experience with some great memories and we made lots of new friends! Our guide was professional, very knowledgeable and always eager to answer our questions. We learned through him that there was so much more to Romania than Bram Stokers’ Dracula. We came away from our trip not only thoroughly enjoying the 3 Halloween parties we attended but also thoroughly enjoying visiting the beautiful towns and historical places related to Vlad the Impaler and learning about the history and culture of Romania and its people. I would highly recommend Transylvania Live and their tours to anyone. I don’t think this will be our only trip to Romania – we will be back!!

Leonard K. Eaton – January 18, 2019 :

Katherine Kan – January 18, 2019 :

My husband and I did the 7 day Halloween Tour with the 2 day Add-on trip. The company was very helpful and timely in their email communications during the planning process and leading up to the trip. We received detailed itinerary information and found the trip to be a great value for everything included and very easy to plan. The experience itself was AMAZING! We had a wonderful small group with a great driver and knowledgeable tour guide. The parties were a ton of fun, but we also loved seeing the castles, churches, fortresses, villages, towns, cities, forests and countryside. Our hotels had lots of character. They all included breakfast, and we also enjoyed the meals included in the tour. Keep in mind, changing hotels every night and carrying luggage up and down stairs when you pack. We aren’t sure how we will ever top this experience! Thank you, Transylvania Live!

James Olson – January 18, 2019 :

My sister Adrienne and I would like to sum up our experience in Transylvania in a word: very “worthwhile.” Our guide Claudiu was knowledgeable, responsible, courteous, and a great driver throughout Transylvania. All the sights and sounds of Transylvania were very interesting, educational and descriptive of life in Romania. We had fun with the younger set of travelers during the two Halloween festivities, in Sighisoara and Bran. We were very happy with the courteous and friendly treatment at Boutique Hotel Moxa; keep on using it. Romania is a very interesting country with lots of history to entice others to visit. We will share our experiences with others, happily.

Angela Perricone – January 18, 2019 :

We had a wonderful holiday in Romania thank you. The Itinerary was very full and we enjoyed the accommodation and all of the visits. We now have much better idea about the history, geography, politics and social aspects of your amazing country. The included meals gave us a taste of your local cuisine, and the hotels were all very good and central to each location. It was so enjoyable to meet you all at Turda. It was a very personal touch. We particularly liked the hotel there. We liked our stay in Sibiu and would like to go back there. Thank you so much for arranging such a memorable holiday and we will certainly recommend you to our friends. We enjoyed our 3 nights in Bucharest at the end of the tour, particularly the Free Walking Tour and the Tour of the Parliament building [unbelievably grandiose] Thank you again to all of the Transylvania Live team

What is the voltage of the electric power system in Romania?

In Romania electric power in use is of 220 voltages, AC, usually 2 pronged.

What’s the climate like in Romania, what clothes should I wear?

Romania enjoys warm summers and cold winters. In summer, cool cottons are best and in the winter a warm jacket or alike is recommended. Autumn is dry and cool, with fields and trees producing beautifully colored foliage. The weather in October-November is very unpredictable, with daytime temperatures between 6°-17° Celsius (42.80 - 62.60 Fahrenheit), and night time temperatures between 3° - 10°Celsius (37.40 - 50 Fahrenheit); but it is very much possible that you will see some snowfall especially in the mountain areas.

What is the time zone for Romania?

Romanian time is EET (Eastern European Time, two hours ahead of GMT, seven hours ahead of New York and ten hours ahead of Los Angeles. Check right now what time is in Bucharest, the capital city of Romania: https://time.is/Bucharest

What clothes should we pack? Will we be OK with jeans for the tour? How should we plan to dress for dinner? What is the dress code? Could we shop for clothes?

The dress code in Romania is the same as all over Europe (think France, Germany, UK or Italy). Wearing jeans, t-shirts/sweatshirts and athletic shoes is standard casual in Romanian. Plenty of designers’ shops are to be found in major cities: Bucharest, Cluj, Brasov, Sibiu, where people are a bit too pretentious when it comes to their outfits. Dorobanti Boulevard in Bucharest can easily be compared to Chaps Elysees in Paris when it comes to “fashionists” (costs are similar too). The malls are well supplied with designers’ clothes and with respect to the prices, a great deal of our clients found the Romanian costs to be more acceptable then the ones in US. With regards to the restaurants’ dress code, something casual is sufficient. You can wear whatever you would wear at home. To satisfy dress codes for churches and monasteries, men and women are requested to cover their arms and legs (no shorts above the knees or sleeveless garments).

Do you want to celebrate Halloween in Transylvania, Romania? Fearlessly revel in the footsteps of an old legend? Have a Halloween party in the real Dracula Castle? Now you can.

Romania is the place to be for Halloween in Europe. Nothing beats the seven-day exclusive Halloween in Transylvania trip with G Adventures that promises ghosts, ghouls and frightful fun. This was the biggest and best Halloween party I’ve ever attended, and if you are going to get involved in such a well-known cultural festival, you might as well do it on a large scale at least once in your lifetime.

This seven-day trip begins in Romania’s capital, Bucharest, before taking you through highlights of the region, some of which keep to the theme. The travel-packed Halloween in Romania tour includes visiting Sighisoara – the birthplace of the real Dracula, Vlad “The Impaler” Tepes, a medieval prince with a thirst for blood.

After a cultural city-hop, you’ll be lured to the mysterious dwelling of one of horror legend’s most fearful figures as you embark on a spooky spectacular tour of Dracula’s castle, where you hold the best Halloween party tickets in town. No other traveller groups party here on 31 st October – Bran Castle is exclusive to G Adventures on this evening.

Romanian castles can be found in abundance, but Bran Castle in Transylvania is one of Romania’s best-known landmarks – a 14th-century fortress sitting atop a hillside in the Carpathian Mountains.

The monument became home to the world’s most notorious vampire, Count Dracula, made famous by Bram Stoker’s 1987 novel about the curse of the undead. Count Dracula is based on Vlad “The Impaler” Tepes, who was allegedly imprisoned here for a few months.

So, if you are tempted to relive a story that’s over 120 years old, Halloween in Transylvania is something you’ll want to sink your teeth into.

How Did Halloween Start? Halloween Around the World

The Halloween date of 31st October is a firm fixture on the calendar of many nations of Christian influence, who try to catch up with the scale of celebration and costume our American neighbours put on. Yet, contrary to popular belief, Halloween didn’t start in the USA. So how did Halloween come about?

I only recently found out myself that the origin of Halloween began in Ireland and that the Irish took the celebration to the US, where it was made into something much bigger. Halloween originates from the festival of Samhain, an ancient Celtic harvest festival about casting out the old and welcoming the new on 1 st November. The harvest season was at an end, and it was a time when departed souls were seen to return to their former homes. An Irish Halloween tradition was to light bonfires to ward off evil spirits, and families would carve Jack-o-Lanterns from turnips to carry on their journey home. When the Irish emigrated to America, they continued this tradition using the native pumpkin instead.

The Romans gave Halloween a Christian spin, with the 31st of October marking All Hallows’ Eve – the night before All Saints Day (also known as All Hallows Day) on the 1st of November and All Souls’ Day on the 2nd of November. From All Hallows’ Eve came the term Halloween which we affectionately use today.

Halloween in Romania

Even before the Dracula novel brought about Halloween in Romania, the region of Transylvania has for centuries had its legends about the undead (called Strigoi) that still exist today. The Halloween party inside Bran Castle, as it beams in its yellow glow, is a fitting end to the trip in a destination already filled with folklore.

It’s essential to pack your costume Halloween-ready for Europe’s biggest All Hallows’ Eve celebration, where the scary soirée at Hotel Transylvania kicks off with a blood-pumping gathering with 1,000 fearless, fun-seekers from around the globe.

The last time I got dressed up for a cultural carnival was at the Medieval Days Festival in San Marino . This time was much more flamboyant. We dressed up as scary monk vampire slayers, a pirate, a Handmaid, a zebra and a mermaid, joining others who embraced cyborgs, Star Trek, slaying queens, and well-known horror figure alter-egos. It is quite a unique site watching this Transylvania castle fill up with spooky characters as Vlad the Impaler welcomed us before we ventured across the six floors for a Bran Castle tour.

Bran Castle is more than just a famous Transylvanian Castle. It’s gone from a fortress to a castle used in 1438–1442 in defence against the Ottoman Empire, to a royal residence for the last Queen of Romania (Queen Marie) and a communist holding. Today, Bran Castle is a museum.

Bran Castle today – a museum and a legacy

Constructed in 1382, its original purpose-built was to protect the border between Transylvania and Walachia but is now better known as Dracula Castle in Romania, home to the legend and host to Europe’s best Halloween celebration.

Currently, no one lives inside Bran Castle, but Dominic Habsburg, the grandson of Queen Marie, owns it.

Rumours abound that Bran Castle is haunted, with the most well-known spirits said to be Vlad the Impaler and Queen Mary, whose heart is buried within the castle grounds.

Halloween in Transylvania, Romania Tour Itinerary

Arrive in Romania’s capital and explore the city. In the evening you will meet their Chief Experience Officer (CEO) for a briefing before transferring to Sibiu in the morning.

A white spiked memorial statue known as 'brain on stick' in Bucharest, Romania

Not only do you get a chance to get to know your fellow partygoers better on the road, you will also visit the ruins of Dracula’s Poenari Castle and the stunning Curtea de Arges Monastery en route to Sibiu. There is the option to join an orientation walk upon arrival or you can spend your own time exploring, with highlights including the art-focused Brukenthal Museum. Overnight in Sibiu

A new day marks a new location as you head to Sighisoara with time to look around on arrival. Sighisoara is the birthplace of Vlad “The Impaler” Tepes, also known as Dracula, who is said to have been born here around 1430.

On the journey to Bran, you will stop for a visit at Rupea citadel, a 14th-century fortress, and have time to wander around the city. There is also time to take a short taxi ride into nearby Braşov. Wander its cobble-stoned streets, visit the gothic-style Black Church, explore the Brasov History Museum, or indulge in nature with a short one-hour hike up the Tampa mountain for the best views of the city marked by a Hollywood-style sign.

Groups of people enjoying al freso dining in Brasov city main square in Romania. The pastel hued building with red rooftops are backed by high hills.

Elevated views of Brasov after hiking Tampa Mountain

You then get to explore the town and, more importantly, the spooky sites of Bran castle, where historians will be waiting for you on each floor to tell you everything from its history to its ghost stories within the narrow winding stairways and 60 old timbered rooms, underground passages, secret tunnels, and collections of furniture, weapons and armour dating from the 14th to the 19th centuries.

By evening, it’s time to showcase your best costume for an unforgettable Halloween in Transylvania!

The party might be over, but the travel isn’t. Travel back to Bucharest via Snagov Monastery, then spend the remainder of the day enjoying Bucharest. If you have the energy, enjoy the nightlife in the capital after a day of sightseeing.

Depart at any time. Stay on in Bucharest. Or embark on more travel in Romania. The choice is yours.

The seven-day Halloween in Transylvania, Romania trip is priced from £999 per person travelling in a loop to and from Bucharest, giving you a chance to see the highlights of the region outside of the capital and the national monument of Bran castle. Aside from its reputation as the stronghold of Dracula, Romania ranks as one of Europe’s lesser-explored regions, beguiling visitors with its stunning Gothic architecture surrounded by a blanket of rugged forests and mountains. As idyllic as it is by day, the real fun happens at night – particularly Halloween, when you get treated to a costume party in an authentic castle. These are Halloween party tickets that you don’t want to miss out on.

You know what I’ve realized while reading your article? No place could outmatch Transylvania for Halloween celebration. And also there’s no better time than Halloween season if you want to visit Transylvania. I’ve already booked my trip to Romania. This will be October to remember.

I think once you’ve been in Translyvania for Halloween, you’ve done Halloween on the best scale.

Hey Becky, thanks for such a detailed insight into travel in Myanmar, just planning a trip there for Feb. Would two weeks allow enough time to travel from Mandalay..Bagan.. a few days at coastal beaches and ending in Yangon.

Halloween in Transylvania is a great idea, considering that this is the region associated with Dracula. For those who have the time, the town of Sighisoara should also be included on the itinerary, because that’s where Dracula’s house can be visited – granted it’s now a restaurant and an inn.

The castle’s stony corridors and grand rooms are bathed in a spectral glow, courtesy of carefully placed lighting that accentuates its gothic architecture. Bran Castle in Autumn; Dracula's Castle, Halloween in Transylvania

The Haunting History of Dracula’s Castle in Transylvania

Bran Castle, perched majestically atop a 200-foot rock, serves as an emblematic testament to Transylvania’s rich and tumultuous history . Yet, as the world knows it, the castle’s fame doesn’t stem solely from its historic and architectural significance; it’s entwined with tales of bloodthirsty vampires, thanks to Bram Stoker’s iconic novel “Dracula.”

Long before the castle became synonymous with the world of vampires , it stood as a fortress. Commissioned in 1377 by the Hungarian King Louis I of Anjou, its primary purpose was to defend the strategically crucial mountain pass from invading forces and to protect the region of Transylvania from potential attacks.

Over the years, Bran Castle had its share of royal residents and esteemed guests, but none as infamous as Vlad the Impaler. Often mistaken for a bloodsucking vampire, Vlad Tepes was, in reality, a 15th-century prince known for his penchant for impaling his enemies. Brutal? Yes. Vampire? Not quite.

Bram Stoker, an Irish writer, never actually visited Transylvania. Yet, his 1897 novel “Dracula” painted such a vivid picture of the region and its infamous count that it forever linked Bran Castle to the legend of the undead. While Stoker’s Dracula is a fictitious character, many believe the writer drew inspiration from Vlad the Impaler’s brutal reputation and tales of ancient Romanian folklore.

It’s essential to distinguish between the two, however. Vlad, for all his ruthlessness, was still a human leader, albeit with a flair for dramatic and terror-inducing punishments. Dracula, on the other hand, is a supernatural being, a nocturnal creature thirsting for blood.

Every corner of Bran Castle brims with tales, some true and others embellished by time. Ghostly apparitions, unexplained noises, and mysterious happenings are reported by many visitors, adding a layer of intrigue to this already fascinating place.

Local legends speak of the “strigoi,” Romanian spirits of the deceased rising from the grave. Some tales tell of these spirits turning into animals, while others whisper of them draining the vitality of the living. Sounds familiar? The strigoi legend is undeniably a precursor to the modern vampire myth.

Did You Know? The castle’s design, with its hidden passages and labyrinthine layout, wasn’t just for defense against invaders. Such designs were believed to confuse and trap malevolent spirits.

Visiting Bran Castle today is an experience that balances history with the allure of the supernatural. While guides will regale you with genuine historical facts, there’s no escaping the nods to its Dracula association. Thematic tours, dedicated exhibitions, and even some staff dressed in period costumes bring the legend of Count Dracula to life, offering tourists a delightful blend of fact and fiction.

In the end, whether you’re a history buff, a lover of legends, or just someone in search of a spooky thrill, Bran Castle delivers on all fronts. As you walk its halls, you’re not just exploring a castle; you’re delving into a world where the line between myth and reality is tantalizingly, thrillingly blurred.

Halloween Specials 2023: What’s Brewing at Bran?

This year, on October 28th, 2023, the castle has prepared an assortment of dark delights for visitors:

Tailored especially for the Count’s youngest guests, this tour runs from 09:00 to 16:00. Priced at 70 lei for adults and 30 lei for children, this experience offers a toned-down version of the usual Halloween haunts. Expect special effects, interactive actors, and an atmospheric setting with dim lights and intriguing dark corners, all adjusted for a younger audience.

For 100 lei (adults) and 50 lei (children), wander the castle’s shadowy corridors from 09:00 to midnight. Expect special effects, actors ready to give you goosebumps, and the allure of dark corners and dim lighting. This isn’t your usual castle tour.

This 250 lei ticket is an adults-only pass, granting holders the double pleasure of the Halloween Special Tour and an entry to the Halloween Party. The party, taking place under a grand 600 sqm gala tent in the Royal Park, promises a night of music with a live DJ, light shows, and a bar. The party will go on from 21:00 to 04:00.

Insider Tip: If you plan to attend this party, book your tickets well in advance. This event sells out quickly due to its immense popularity.

For those looking to dine like royalty, a 600 lei ticket ensures a sumptuous four-course dinner, complemented with a glass of wine or sparkling wine. With two slots available at 18:30 and 21:00, it’s a culinary treat not to be missed.

For the truly adventurous, an 800 lei ticket gives you access to the Halloween Dinner, Halloween Special Tour, and the Halloween Party. A full package for the full experience!

Tickets are available for purchase both online at Bran Castle’s ticket portal and on location on the event night. It’s worth noting that there are only 160 seats available for the Halloween Dinner (80 per slot) and 1,000 Combo tickets, so be sure to grab yours soon!

An Enhanced Sensory Adventure

This isn’t just any Halloween celebration. Bran Castle promises an immersive experience with horror music, eerie sounds, fantastical characters, film props, and candies for the little ones. The ambience is further heightened with the dim lights, creaky floors, and the occasional serving of blood-red Romanian wine .

For those looking to extend the thrills, the Time Tunnel hosts a special show at the modest price of 40 lei. But a word to the wise – this might not be for the faint of heart or those sensitive to loud noises and intermittent lights. If you suffer from claustrophobia or are carrying little ones, proceed with caution.

A Night with Count Dracula: Tips for the Ultimate Transylvania Halloween Experience

Whether you’re a die-hard Dracula fan or someone seeking a unique Halloween adventure, spending a night in Transylvania promises a memorable experience. However, to make the most of your Transylvanian escapade, a bit of planning and some local tips can go a long way.

While attending any of the grand Halloween balls or parties, a costume is a must! Drawing inspiration from Bram Stoker’s novel can never go wrong. From dressing as the Count himself to channeling Mina or Jonathan Harker, the choices are endless. Of course, adding a Transylvanian twist to any classic Halloween costume can also be a hit.

No visit to Transylvania is complete without indulging in local Romanian cuisine . Look out for treats like mămăligă (cornmeal porridge), sarmale (cabbage rolls), and mucenici (traditional pastries). And during Halloween, many local eateries offer special spooky versions of these dishes. Remember, Transylvania isn’t just about vampire lore – it’s a feast for the palate too!

Bran Castle and its surroundings see a surge in visitors during the Halloween season. Ensure you book your accommodations well in advance. For a truly immersive experience, consider staying in one of the many historical inns or guest houses that dot the region.

While Count Dracula takes center stage, Transylvania is home to a plethora of myths and legends. Engaging with local storytellers or hiring a local guide can provide insights into tales lesser-known but equally enthralling.

Autumn in Transylvania can be chilly, especially during the evenings. Packing warm clothing and comfortable footwear is essential, especially if you plan to explore the cobbled streets or venture into the forests.

It’s easy to get carried away in the spirit of Halloween in Transylvania and the tales of Count Dracula. However, remember that for many locals, some legends and stories have deep cultural and spiritual significance. Always approach such tales and any related sites or rituals with respect.

While nighttime brings its own set of spooky adventures, Transylvania during the day offers a range of activities. Explore the scenic beauty, visit local markets, take part in craft workshops, or simply bask in the rich history that surrounds you.

As with any popular tourist destination, it’s essential to be mindful of your surroundings. Stick to well-lit areas at night, be aware of local advisories, and always let someone know of your whereabouts if venturing far from your accommodation.

Transylvania boasts a rich tradition of crafts. From intricately carved wooden artifacts to handwoven textiles, there’s a treasure trove of souvenirs waiting for you. These items not only serve as a memento of your trip but also support local artisans.

Lastly, come with an open heart and mind. Transylvania’s charm lies in its blend of myths and reality. Let yourself be immersed, listen to the tales, enjoy the chills, but also appreciate the authentic culture and warmth of its people.

To spend Halloween in Transylvania is to experience a blend of thrill, mystery, and cultural richness. As the moonlight bathes the land and the silhouette of Bran Castle looms in the distance, remember: the magic of Transylvania isn’t just in its tales of the undead but in its living traditions, its history, and its welcoming inhabitants. Prepare well, and you’re in for a Halloween that you’ll reminisce about for years to come

Romania’s Transylvania: Beyond Dracula’s Castle

Often depicted as a land of darkness and mystery, Transylvania encapsulates much more than just the legend of Count Dracula. A region rich in culture, history, and breathtaking landscapes, Transylvania provides a unique backdrop that seamlessly melds the supernatural with the mundane. As the fog-laden forests give way to picturesque towns and sweeping mountain ranges, the story of Transylvania unfolds – a narrative far more intricate than its association with a single vampire count.

A Cultural Mosaic: Transylvania’s Rich Tapestry

While tales of the undead might dominate popular culture, Transylvania is home to a diverse array of ethnic groups, each contributing to the region’s vibrant cultural mosaic. From traditional Romanian festivals to the Hungarian-speaking Székely community’s unique customs, there’s a kaleidoscope of traditions waiting to be explored.

Transylvanian towns, like Brașov, Sibiu, and Cluj-Napoca, are living museums. Their cobblestoned streets, Gothic churches, and colorful baroque buildings echo tales of medieval guilds, Saxon settlers, and Ottoman invasions.

Nestled in the heart of Transylvania, the medieval town of Sighișoara is a gem that offers a captivating glimpse into the region’s rich history. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Sighișoara is renowned for its well-preserved walled old town, colorful burgher houses, and cobbled streets.

One of the town’s most notable claims to fame is that it’s believed to be the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the historical figure who inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Visitors can explore the very house where he was born, which now serves as a restaurant and museum.

Did You Know?: The town’s German cemetery is a poignant reminder of the Saxons of Transylvania. Originating from the German-speaking regions of Europe, these settlers played a crucial role in the region’s history, especially in establishing and fortifying towns like Sighișoara. It’s a spooky option for Halloween in Transylvania.

Beyond the vampiric allure, Transylvania harbors ancient traditions that can give anyone goosebumps. The age-old custom of “Mărțișor” heralds spring’s arrival, where Romanians exchange red and white trinkets symbolizing renewal and health. During winter, locals don masks and furs to perform the “Bear Dance,” a pagan ritual to ward off evil spirits and ensure a prosperous new year.

With its dark legends and atmospheric settings, it’s no wonder Transylvania has embraced Halloween with open arms. Local towns and villages hold their own Halloween festivities, drawing from both the Western concept of Halloween and the area’s native myths.

Sighișoara, the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, hosts its own annual Medieval Festival , where history and legend coalesce. Streets come alive with medieval workshops, parades, and performances, giving a taste of life during Vlad’s reign.

Romania’s tourism has witnessed a renaissance of sorts, courtesy of its Dracula legacy, coupled with its low cost relative to other countries. However, local initiatives ensure visitors leave with a well-rounded understanding of the region. Museums, cultural centers, and local guides offer insights into Transylvania’s multifaceted identity, ensuring the Dracula legend doesn’t overshadow its genuine historical and cultural treasures.

For those wanting a break from the myths and legends, the Carpathian Mountains offer pristine landscapes and a rich biodiversity. Hikers and nature enthusiasts can explore the Retezat National Park or the Apuseni Natural Park . Hiking in Transylvania is teeming with wildlife, serene lakes, and verdant forests. These areas, untouched by the hands of time, provide a peaceful counterpoint to the bustling tales of vampiric counts and haunted castles.

Halloween in Transylvania (Northbound)

7 days | spend your spookiest halloween ever in haunting romania.

Sighisoara, Transylvania, Romania with it's famous medieval fortified city

Even without its bloodcurdling myths of Dracula, werewolves, haunted castles and gypsy curses, Romania is an atmospheric destination. And no more so on the spooky holiday of Halloween. Let us introduce you to the beauty of ancient Bucharest, the haunting beauty and mythology of Sighisoara, and spooky Bran Castle (aka Dracula’s castle) in Brasov. For a spine-tingling adventure this Halloween, don’t look past this adventure in Transylvania. Mwahahaha.

Trip overview

  • Transylvania conjures up images of haunted castles, gothic churches and vampires. Where better to spend time around Halloween than in the 12th-century town of Sighisoara, the birthplace of Count Dracula? Things are about to get medi-evil
  • Break out your scariest costumes for a spooky Halloween party in Cluj Napoca, the former capital of the historical principality of Transylvania
  • Protect yourself against devils and demons with a visit to the Turda Salt Mines, a fascinating museum showcasing the history of salt in the region complete with an underground amusement park
  • Delve into the communist past and the thriving, artistic present-day vibe of Bucharest, a city often underrated by travellers. The grand architecture of the 1980’s Palace of the Parliament is particularly awe-inspiring
  • A stopover in the traditional Saxon village of Viscri exposes you to Romanian hospitality and some finger-licking home-cooked food
  • Autumn weather in Romania can be cooler than expected, especially at higher altitude. Please consider the time of year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
  • Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together if you'd like to get cosy. Also, please note that many hotels and guesthouses only offer shared bathrooms rather than en-suite facilities.
  • This trip takes place around Halloween in October. If you would like to visit Romania during a different time of year you may want to check out our trip 'Budapest to Bucharest' (trip code WMSB) or the epic 'Eastern Europe Explorer' (trip code WMSEC), which continues further south into Bulgaria.
  • On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15kg / 33lb. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day trips.

Bună Ziua! Welcome to Bucharest. Often called the 'Little Paris of the Balkans', Romania's capital is known for its Belle Epoch architecture, thumping nightlife and communist sites. After the welcome meeting this evening, you might like to get a head start and explore the city by night, or perhaps head out for a group dinner to get a first sample of Romania's unique cuisine.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Bucharest - Bike Tour - EUR25
  • Bucharest - Palace of Parliament Tour - RON60
  • Bucharest - Village Museum - RON30
  • Bucharest - Former Ceauşescu Residence - RON55
  • Bucharest - Romanian Athenaeum - RON10

Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6pm today. Please look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask reception where it will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). If you're going to be late, please inform the hotel reception. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please ensure you have all these details to provide to your leader.

This morning meet your local guide for a private tour of Bucharest. After taking in the recently restored old town of Bucharest, visit some of the more significant sites of the revolution of 1989, which culminated in the ousting and execution of communist leader Ceausescu, and the end of Romania's 42-year communist rule. Bucharest likes big things – the tour will also stop by the huge Piata Unirii, one of Europe's largest squares, and continue on to the ‘Ceausima’, Bucharest's 12-storey Palace of Parliament. The palace is the second largest building in the world (after the Pentagon). The former dictator ordered the construction of this monster, a building of staggering scale and opulence that includes 1,100 rooms and 4,500 chandeliers. In the afternoon, travel by train to the 13th-century Saxon city of Brasov. Also known by its German name of Kronstadt, this town flanked by mountains and city walls was once a major medieval trading centre.

  • Bucharest - Walking Tour with Local Guide

No trip to Romania would be complete without a visit to the famous Bran Castle. The castle was built by the Saxons in 1382 to defend the Bran pass against the invading Turks. With its fairy-tale turrets and whitewashed walls, it's far from menacing and spooky, but is undeniably impressive, perched on a high cliff top and surrounded by pine trees. Afterwards, return to Brasov and enjoy a guided walk around town, checking out the ornate churches, townhouses, old city walls, and squares surrounded by gingerbread-roofed merchants' houses. Visit Brasov's main attraction, the gothic Black Church (Biserica Neagra), which took its name from its blackened appearance after a fire in 1689.

  • Bran Castle - Tour

  • Brasov - The Black Church - RON15
  • Brasov - Cable Car to Mt Tampa - RON25

In the morning, travel by private transport to Viscri, less than 2 hours away (but it’ll feel like you’re entering another world). The small Transylvanian village of Viscri was originally inhabited by Saxons from the Luxembourg area, and the whole scene is picture-postcard rural. This idyllic village of red tiled roofs is a World Heritage site, virtually unchanged for 900 years. You’ll visit the town's fortified church (thought to be the oldest in Transylvania) and learn about the Sock Project, which supports the local Roma community. After a home cooked lunch at the house of a local family continue to the 12th century town of Sighisoara (approximately 1 hour). After a quick orientation walk you have all afternoon to explore the city.

  • Viscri - Fortified Church
  • Viscri - Sock Project Visit
  • Viscri - Local Home Cooked Lunch
  • Sighisoara - Covered Stairway - Free
  • Sighisoara - Church of the Dominican Monastery - RON10
  • Sighisoara - Church on the Hill - RON5
  • Sighisoara - The Clock Tower - RON16

Today you will visit Viscri's Sock Project. It involves approximately 125 women knitting 10,000 pairs of socks a year earning around 45,000 Euro for the village!

Medieval Sighisoara is likely to seduce visitors more than any other place in Romania. The town is famed as the birthplace of Vlad Dracul III, better known as Vlad the Impaler, the ruler of Walachia province from 1456 to 1462 and whose name was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s iconic Count Dracula. Walking through the town is like taking a trip back in time to the medieval age, and it’s easy to image streets crowded with vampires, evil counts, wolves, peasants riding through the untamed countryside on horse-drawn carts and crooked old men doddering along the narrow streets. After a morning of exploring Sighisoara in your own time, travel by train through pastoral fields and untouched Saxon towns to Cluj Napoca, the unofficial capital of Transylvania. Perhaps enjoy a stroll around the Gothic streets of the 2000-year-old down before getting dressed up in your spookiest costumes for a Halloween party with your group.

  • Cluj Napoca - Halloween Party in Cluj

Please note that this itinerary may have multiple departures on the same date. Your group size will still be capped at a maximum of 16 participants, but at tonight's Halloween Party you will mingle with as many as 16 other travellers from concurrently running Intrepid trips. The more the merrier! In order to give your creativity free reign we recommend you bring along your own costume for the party. Costume hire opportunities on-site are very limited.

In the morning, visit the Turda Salt Mines, a former salt mine converted into an underground amusement park, complete with ferries wheel. You can even hire a row boat and play bowling. There is also a fascinating museum showcasing the history of salt mining in the region. Salt is a common protective tool against all sorts of evil beings; legend has it that if you pour an unbroken line of salt across the entranceways to your house, vampires and demons won’t be able to get in. After your salt mine visit, return to Cluj for a city tour with a local guide. The remainder of the day is yours to explore. Perhaps meet up with your group for a final dinner tonight.

  • Turda - Salt Mines Tour

transylvania halloween tour

Really enjoyed the Sighisoara party over the Bran castle party on which we participated last year. Great guide, fun trip, great food! Sighisoara hotel was great, but the one at Bran castle was very dated and in need of updates. Overall would give it a 4.5 rating, loved our trip!

transylvania halloween tour

Bună Ziua! Welcome to Cluj Napoca, the unofficial capital of Romania’s Transylvania region. After your evening welcome meeting, you might like to explore the 2000-year-old city, hit up the famous Piezisa Street for a drink, or head out for dinner with your group to get a taste of Romania’s unique cuisine.

In the evening, dress up for a spooky Halloween party with your group.

Travel by train through pastoral fields and untouched Saxon towns to the 12th-century town of Sighisoara (approximately 3.5 hours). Head out with your leader for a quick orientation walk, then spend the rest of your day exploring in your own time.

After a free morning in Sighisoara, travel to Viscri, less than an hour away (but it’ll feel like you’re entering another world). The small Transylvanian village of Viscri was originally inhabited by Saxons from the Luxembourg area, and the whole scene is picture-postcard rural. This idyllic village of red tiled roofs is a World Heritage site, virtually unchanged for 900 years. After a home cooked lunch at the house of a local family you’ll visit the town's fortified church (thought to be the oldest in Transylvania), and learn about the Sock Project, which supports the local Roma community. Continue on to the 13th-century city of Brasov in the afternoon. Also known by its German name of Kronstadt, this town flanked by mountains and city walls was once a major medieval trading centre.

This morning, travel by train to Bucharest. Often called the 'Little Paris of the Balkans', Romania's capital is known for its Belle Epoch architecture, thumping nightlife and communist sites. Meet your local guide for a private tour of the city, starting with the recently restored old town of Bucharest, then some of the more significant sites of the revolution of 1989, which culminated in the ousting and execution of communist leader Ceausescu, and the end of Romania's 42-year communist rule.

Your Halloween tour ends today. There are no activities planned for the final day and you can depart your accommodation at any time. If you want to stay longer in Bucharest please check about additional accommodation when you make your booking.

Advice for Irish tourists traveling to Romania

If you’re travelling to Romania, the  Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade  has the following travel advice practical tips and useful information.

Get travel and medical insurance

Before travelling, the Department strongly recommends that you obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), available by  contacting the Health S e rvice Executive , and that you also obtain comprehensive travel insurance which will cover all overseas medical costs, including medical repatriation/evacuation, repatriation of remains and legal costs. You should check any exclusions and, in particular, that your policy covers you for the activities you want to undertake.

Security status

Romania remains a safe country to visit. There are internal political tensions and visitors are advised to avoid large crowds and political demonstrations. We advise that all normal precautions be taken.

Romanians are friendly and welcoming people many of whom will happily converse in English

The majority of visits to Romania are trouble-free.  Serious crimes involving tourists are not particularly common and most of those that do arise are petty and do not involve violence. There is no known threat of terrorism. Nevertheless, visitors to Romania are advised to take normal personal and security precautions, particularly at night.

Irish nationals do not require visas for visits to Romania.

The official currency in Romania is the RON, often called Lei. Obtaining RON prior to travel can be difficult. However, on arrival cash can be withdrawn from ATMs.

Irish visitors to Romania are encouraged to register with the Irish Embassy in Bucharest.

Emergency assistance

The best help is often close at hand so if you have problems, try talking to your local contacts, tour operator representative or hotel management.

You can contact the emergency services in Romania by dialing 112.

Our tips for Safe Travels:

  • Purchase comprehensive travel insurance which covers all your intended activities.
  • Get a  European Health Insurance Card
  • Add an alert for your destination within the Travelwise App.
  • Register your details with us so that we can contact you quickly if there’s an unforeseen crisis like a natural disaster or a family emergency.

Safety and security

There have been some reports of credit and debit cards being scanned or stolen and used illegally, as happens elsewhere.  Use of ATMs is generally safe but some precautions should be employed, such as only using those in department stores or hotel or airport lobbies.

As would be expected in large urban locations, there are occasional reports of pickpockets and bag snatchers operating in crowded areas. Confidence scams leading to theft of passports or wallets have also been known to arise where thieves claiming to be police approach visitors and ask for ID.  The Romanian police do not generally ask people for documentation without good cause and in the event of any reason for suspicion visitors should offer to go the nearest police station.

Ideally, where they are not expected to be needed, valuables and other items such as spare jewelry, passports, driving licences, credit/debit cards and excess cash should be secured in a hotel safe.

While the water supply in Romania is not known to be contaminated, use of bottled or filtered water is recommended as a safer option.

Wild Animals

Although a decreasing problem, Romania has a significant population of stray dogs.  While these do not usually pose a danger it is strongly recommended to avoid contact with them as they can be aggressive and some could be rabid.

The Carpathian Mountains of Romania are famous for their wilderness and beauty but are also home to large populations of bears and wolves.  While they try to avoid humans, it is recommended when visiting remote areas to travel in groups and to take expert advice locally.

Local laws and customs

Visitors are required to carry photo ID in Romania; a photocopy of passport or driver’s licence should suffice for this purpose.

Inappropriate or insensitive behaviour or activity in public is likely to offend others and risks prosecution or even a violent reaction.

Bucharest has a good Metro system.  It and other towns and cities are serviced by buses, trams and taxis which are very good value by western European standards.  Romania also has a good network of inter-city trains.  Motorways are not extensive.

Some Romanians drive erratically and at excessive speeds and vehicles are not always fully roadworthy.  Serious road traffic accidents regularly occur.  Visitors entering Romania by road or driving there should ensure that they have adequate insurance cover.  Insurance companies or brokers should be consulted in advance about this, if necessary.  Drivers in Romania must also be in possession of a driving license and car ownership documentation.

All vehicles must pay a general road toll.  This “Roviniete” ticket can be purchased at border points and at most petrol stations throughout Romania, and should be prominently displayed on the vehicle windscreen.

The traffic police are known to apply on-the-spot penalties for infringements of traffic regulations, including the retention of driving licences for up to three months in very serious cases.

In winter, drivers should ensure that vehicles are prepared for extreme weather conditions, including fitting mandatory winter tyres.

Roads, including primary roads, can be of poor standard, badly lit, pot-holed and with barely visible markings.  Appropriate precautions should be taken, especially at night.

There is zero tolerance for drink-driving and permitted blood/alcohol ratios are below those in Ireland.

In Romania, taxis are relatively inexpensive.  In general it is recommended that taxis are booked using one of the various methods available, rather than hailed on the street.  This is especially the case where vehicles do not have a meter or display fares.  Some visitors have reported incidents of overcharging, especially from airports and major train stations – some taxi drivers will offer a fixed price to the city centre which may appear reasonable but could be significantly in excess of the normal fares in Romania.  Visitors arriving at the airport are advised to decline any taxi offers in the arrivals area but instead to avail of one of the simple-to-use automated taxi ordering services in the arrivals hall.

Travel Insurance

We can’t pay for emergency medical repatriation, repatriation of remains, or for expenses as a result of a personal emergency while you are abroad. If you buy an appropriate travel insurance policy, these costs will be covered, provided you haven’t broken the terms and conditions.

Buying comprehensive travel insurance can save you and your family a lot of money if something goes wrong. It will also ensure that you get the medical attention you need, when you need it. Hospital bills can quickly run into thousands of euro, and a medical evacuation back to Ireland can cost thousands more.

Not all policies are the same, and the cheapest one might be cheap for a reason. Make sure your policy covers all the activities you plan to do on your trip.  Insurance Ireland recommend  that you purchase a policy that provides a minimum medical cover of €1 million.

Emergency expenses

Your policy should cover:

  • All medical care abroad, including evacuation by air ambulance, or other emergency procedures, and any other costs associated with an unexpected longer stay.
  • Your entire trip, from departure to return. Consider an annual multi-trip policy if you’re making more than one trip in the year.

transylvania halloween tour

Christopher Lee – January 18, 2019 :

Transylvania Live did a great job organizing the tour and even helping out to make sure their customers are comfortable and properly accommodated. Monica and Hertha did a good job being guides. The party was totally epic and the people from the other groups were amazing, fun, and drama-free. I am big on Halloween season events, and all, but my peak event was this party and the only regret I have is I wish it would’ve lasted longer. I plan on returning next year or sometime soon for the other castle’s Halloween party. Highly recommend.

With regards to the restaurants’ dress code, something casual is sufficient. You can wear whatever you would wear at home. To satisfy dress codes for churches and monasteries, men and women are requested to cover their arms and legs (no shorts above the knees or sleeveless garments).

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!
