Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez know how to make a crowd go wild. The pair hit the stage during Taylor's last 1989 world tour show at the Staples Center in LA on Wednesday night and, needless to say, it was pretty amazing. The BFFs, who looked gorgeous in nearly matching bodysuits and thigh-high boots , sang Selena's hit song "Good For You" for the sold-out stadium. The performance marks the first time Selena has belted out the song in front of a live audience. After the show, the two took to Instagram to share cute photos of themselves on stage . Selena, who called their bond a "sisterhood," joked about how their duet will be a story they can tell their future kids.

Selena's appearance came on the same night that Taylor welcomed Justin Timberlake and Lisa Kudrow to the stage. Justin sang his hit "Mirrors," while Lisa performed her infamous song from Friends , "Smelly Cat," as her character Phoebe Buffay. Keep reading to see more photos of Taylor and Selena owning the stage, then check out what Selena had to say about dating Justin Bieber .

Taylor Swift's 'The 1989 World Tour' Documentary: 10 Fascinating Moments

As promised, Taylor Swift released a concert documentary about her hugely successful 1989 World Tour this holiday season. It’s appropriately titled The 1989 World Tour, and is currently streaming on Apple Music exclusively.

Centering around her tour stop in Sydney, Australia, the film is filled with live performances of songs from her blockbuster 1989 album , backstage footage, interviews with her famous friends, and narration from Swift herself.

Here are 10 fascinating moments from The 1989 World Tour documentary.

1) In the movie, Swift explains how she recruited that endless parade of special guests for her tour. “Some of the special guest appearances were planned months in advance. I would reach out and I’d say, ‘I love your music. Here’s the schedule, here are the tour dates. Which ever one you want to come to, we’d love to have you.'” Swift notes that after Mick Jagger joined her onstage, people were more likely to say yes.

2) Not all of the special guests were planned so far in advance, however. In the documentary, Swift reveals she recruited John Legend to join her onstage just 40 minutes prior to showtime after spotting him in the audience.

3) Rehearsing backstage with Alanis Morissette in one scene, we see Swift urging the singer-songwriter to mime hitting her during the lyric, “It was a slap in the face.” Taylor explains her insistence on the slap to Alanis as such: “Bruises heal, but moments last forever.”

4) Anyone who showed up at the 1989 Tour is familiar with the colorful audience bracelets that lit up in synchronization during the show. What they might not know, however, is that Swift let her guests control the bracelet colors during their visiting performances.

5) In an interview portion of the film, Lena Dunham shares her memory of Taylor playing 1989 for her pre-release date: “I made her play it over and over until she finally said, ‘I don’t want to play it anymore.'”

6) In one scene, Swift explains snagging Mick Jagger for a duet on “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” at her Nashville tour stop. “My dad’s like, ‘My friend swears he was sitting next to Mick Jagger at lunch yesterday.’ So I text Mick and I said, ‘Hey are you in town? I’m playing a show tomorrow night, do you want to come out and sing “Satisfaction”?’ And he just writes back, ‘What will I wear?'”

7) At 1:17:00, Swift’s friends — from Selena Gomez to Haim to Cara Delevingne — share stories on what a “typical hang with Taylor” is like. Hints: Dancing, and lots of cats.

8) Swift shares she wanted to duet with Mary J. Blige on “Doubt” after hearing the soul queen sing it at a Grammy party. “I’m so doubtful of myself constantly — no matter what I achieve, no matter what happens,” Swift said. “So that song struck a chord with me. I remember thinking, ‘That would be amazing if I could ever sing that with her.'” And in L.A., they did.

9) Swift heaps massive praise on her “Mirrors” duet partner in one scene. “I think Justin Timberlake is the closest thing our generation has to Frank Sinatra ,” she said, comparing one actor-singer to another. “I honestly think he’s one of the greatest musicians of our time.”

10) Post credits fun! Taylor shares her plans for 2016, saying, “Maybe I’ll jut eat carbs for the next seven months. I don’t have to wear any crop tops.” She also stands in front of the camera holding her two cats while one of them desperately tries to escape. The film ends with the words, “No cats were harmed in the making of this tour. Just one pop star.”

Taylor Swift's 1989 World Tour: A Track By Track Breakdown

the 1989 world tour live selena gomez

TOKYO -- It is here, Swifties. Taylor Swift' s 1989 World Tour has kicked off in Tokyo and not only are the 55,000 people at the Toyko Dome excited, but fans all over the world woke up super early to get their first glance at the show on the Internet (including me).

MTV News had someone at the show, giving us updates from within, while we scoured around for any bit of Tay we could scavenge! And from her sexy "I Know Places" costume to her hard rock version of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" to onscreen cameos from the likes of Lena Dunham, Selena Gomez, HAIM, Karlie Kloss and Cara Delevingne, here's your look at Tay's tour -- one track at a time.

Let's begin, shall we?

'Welcome To New York'

Jun Sato/Getty Images for TS

Tay starts the show with "WTNY" in a glittery blazer. The dome is also a-glitter with light-up bracelets provided for everyone.

Here we gooooooo!

With her flock of male dancers, she welcomes the crowd, walking down a platform in heels. Behind her, a NYC-centric backdrop flashes like city streets.

"It's a new soundtrack/ I can dance to this beat/ Forever more."

"It's been waitin' for you."

Ummm... did girl just take her blazer off? Damn!

'New Romantics'

Fans really freaked when she went into "New Romantics," a bonus track off 1989 .

Let's all lose our chill together.

'Blank Space'

Aaaaand you know she couldn't get away without doing fan-favorite "Blank Space." (Although she didn't play "Wonderland.")

The blazer is back on!

"And you! Love! The game!"

'I Knew You Were Trouble'

"IKYWT" is remixed. She slows it down, gets sinister, almost channeling a Lorde-type vibe.

Plumes of smoke were thrown from the stage during the chorus.

And the colors of the bracelets were synched up to the show. During "IKYWT," they turned red.

We're only three songs in and it's a funeral for Swifties.

Gone is the purple skirt. Swift knows how to change outfits like a pro.

"Trouble, trouble, trouble."

'I Wish You Would'

Taylor talks to the crowd.

'How You Get The Girl'

Taylor switched into a pink dress, while her dancers brought out umbrellas for "How You Get The Girl."

The umbrellas light up! And there's more NYC imagery. The Brooklyn Bridge shows up in the background.

Fake rain falls onscreen as Taylor gets all cute.

Look at all those people!

'I Know Places'

Taylor quick-changes once again and she's off into "I Know Places."

That grunt doe.

OK, we're all on the same page about that growl.

She called everyone her friends.

'All You Had To Do Was Stay'

And then Taylor seduced us all with her crystalized blue eyes.

She's singing on the floor!

'You Are In Love'

She got on a stage extension and rose into the air for "You Are In Love."

It's acoustic and she's got the guitar out.

The crowd echoes her, just like in the recording!

She's wearing another crop top for this one -- this time it's royal blue.

Haim makes an appearance in a pre-taped video.

And so do her cats, Olivia and Meredith.

Now it's time for "Clean," and the visuals for the "Style" video are on. (Another hint that the video could've been for "Clean." )

And now she's lying on the cold, hard ground again.

'Love Story'

Swift brings it back to the good ol' days with "Love Story."

I'm almost certain she recycled her old outfits.

It's time for another outfit change and another song. It's "Style"!

"I've got that red lip classic thing that you like."

"Watch us go round and round each time."

'This Love'

She works a white, fringe leotard for "This Love."

"These hands had to let it go free and this love came back to me."

'Bad Blood'

Taylor is in LEATHER and singing "Bad Blood."

Again. Leather.

'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together'

Swizzle turns "WANEGBT" into a hard rock jam . So badass.

I'm not worthy.

'Enchanted'

She goes right from "Enchanted" into "Wildest Dreams."

'Wildest Dreams'

The piano comes out for "Wildest Dreams."

Somehow she managed to change into ANOTHER sparkly suit.

It looks just like Karlie Kloss' Victoria's Secret suit!

"Say you'll see me again even if it's just in your wildest dreams."

'Out Of The Woods'

During "Out of the Woods," some giant paper airplanes flew out. You know, like Harry Styles' plane ?

'Shake It Off'

Time to dance.

Is it over already?

All of Taylor's outfits throughout the night.

Some fans get to meet up after the show at "Loft 89."

"The view that took my breath away...55,000 strong." - Taylor Swift

Review: Taylor Swift’s “The 1989 World Tour Live”

Uyen

Even a year after releasing her first pop album, “ 1989″ , Taylor Swift doesn’t look set on letting her most successful album be forgotten. On Sunday (20/12), the megastar released a tour documentary, exclusively on Apple Music, titled “ The 1989 World Tour Live “ .

The two-hour long film allows fans to experience a  1989  show for the first time or to simply relive their own concert. Swift also grants her millions of fans exclusive backstage access, starring celebrity friends Wiz Khalifa , Selena Gomez and Mick Jagger – just to name a few.

Filmed at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium, “ The 1989 World Tour Live ” demonstrates the grand scale on which this 26-year-old has planned her shows, with the largest attendance of the tour: 76,000. The show is nothing short of mesmerising pyrotechnics, impressive choreography and united screams from the audience.

The documentary begins with a galactic crowd, flashing lights against a pitch black backdrop. Swift’s voice over narrates, “I wondered what it would be like to perform for 70,000 people.”

The speckled darkness of the stadium is illuminated and neon signs welcome Sydney fans to the 1989 World Tour.

Swift appears on the main stage with a sparkling purple ensemble and sunglasses disguising her expression, but not her identity. As she finally throws her sunglasses into the ecstatic crowd, the show really kicks off. The graphics designers experiment with Matrix -esque big screen ideas – a digital display of vibrant colours to match the bouncy tune about the Big Apple. Ironically, Swift welcomes the Australian fans with the first track on her record: “ Welcome to New York “.

The exhilarating performance sets the mood for the rest of the concert. Even the more pensive “ New Romantic s ” has the crowd chanting along because “ we are too busy dancing to get knocked off our feet .” The cinematography of green light beams connecting one shot to another is executed so well, you can’t be blamed for getting dizzy.

Jacket off, the singer proclaims:

“I was born in 1989.”

The first cut-away scene of the tour documentary begins with Swift’s commentary on hit single, “ Blank Space “. Speaking about the media perception of her “serial dater” image, the popstar boldly states, “If they want to paint this picture – cool,”

“I’ll write a song from that perspective and see how you like it.”

She then went on to say that the track ended up being the “biggest song I’ve ever had.”

Fast forward almost a year after releasing the hit, Swift finds herself facing away from a horde of 76,000 loving fans who know every single word to the song. Magnified silhouettes of her dancers grace the big screens as the opening lyrics are sung.

The singer flaunts a sequined black jumpsuit as she hits her marks on stage. “ Blank Space “, along with its music video, has always struck fans as a mysterious song – one you would expect to hear in Alice in Wonderland – and this performance only adds fuel to this mood. With her playful winks and sauntering stride, Swift entrances the entire stadium, despite the bluntly satirical song.

Another reason the Pennsylvania native successfully ticks all the boxes for charisma is that she deviates from the standard singing. Swift incorporates an effortless loop pedal sequence during the bridge of “ Blank Space “, starting with an inflected “Sydney!”. Her voice is looped, syncopated to the beat of her metal cane against a bar on the catwalk stage. It doesn’t take long before the singer recites “ boys only want love if it’s torture, ” and harmonises with herself multiple times, creating a thick layer of superb vocals.

It’s difficult to think that there was ever a time when the music maestro doubted herself, but that’s more or less to do with the fact that 2014 was such a career-defining year for Swift and the past just seems so distant. Of course, she has overcome many disappointments, as with any artist, and she certainly doesn’t shy away from admitting it.

In the documentary, Swift muses on the Grammy for “Album of the Year”, which evaded her hands following the release of fourth album “ Red “. She claims she woke up in the middle of the night – 4 A.M. to be exact – and knew something had to change. She would craft a completely  different album from her previous one.

“ 1989 ” would go on to sell over 5.5 million copies.

One of the most well-received tracks on said album is a simple melodic song about emancipation called “ Clean “. The live performance of the song does not fall short in its delivery. In fact, it’s certainly the standout of the entire tour documentary. The stage setup is simple: the artist vocalises times of both helplessness and discovery (“when I was drowning, that’s when I could finally breathe,”) while she is carried on a crane into a sea of blue lights. The footage is perhaps the most flattering vocally, as a handful of the other songs’ performances fall flat. In a whirlwind of dancing chaos, overpowering instrumentation and colourful lights – which see the singer’s voice almost inaudible – Swift stuns effortlessly in a stripped back performance.

All in all, the film meets all the criteria for a successful tour documentary, with not only the live concert integrated with spectacular visual continuity, but also truly insightful commentary on Swift’s part. For the fans, “ The 1989 World Tour Live ” will come as no surprise – you already know the 1989 World Tour and you most certainly know Taylor Swift. However, for any doubters out there, this two-hour film will surely alter your perception of the popstar’s vocal, theatrical and intellectual capabilities.

Even with her forthcoming hiatus from music, Taylor Swift never ceases to amaze.

Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour managed to be even more star-studded than the MTV Video Music Awards, which everyone who's anyone attends (except One Direction, who were noticeably absent from T-Swift's tour too, sob.)

Taylor Swift’s Star-Packed ‘1989’ Tour: Relive Every Cameo

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Taylor Swift  has spent the better part of the past five months bringing her masterful 2014 album,  1989 , to the masses. Swift's gigantic pop production — winding down Saturday in Tampa, Florida — has criss-crossed the United States, as well as parts of Europe, but the star has taken pains to distinguish the trek from your run-of-the-mill stadium spectacle, sprinkling her shows with surprise guests from across the musical spectrum.

Swift has paired with everyone from rising stars like the Weeknd, Fetty Wap, Sam Hunt and Rachel Platten, to established peers like Lorde, Nick Jonas and Selena Gomez, and celebrated veterans like Miranda Lambert, Justin Timberlake and Mick Jagger. If previous Swift album cycles were marked by overwrought discussions about which ex a song was calling out,  1989 has been first and foremost about friendship. Swift and her audience are not separate entities, but fellow partygoers: She reacts to the presence of her guests with the same incredulity as the crowd.

Tracking Swift's revolving door of  1989 guests was as much a pastime this summer as baseball or trying to ignore Donald Trump. To date, 35 of Swift's 61 North American shows have featured at least one surprise guest, with some featuring two or three, plus an assortment of friends, who walked a lengthy catwalk alongside Swift during "Style." For those hoping to relive that magic moment — or for fans at guest-less shows still stricken by FOMO —  Rolling Stone has compiled a complete rundown of the cameo-crammed tour.

Dan Reynolds, “Radioactive” in Detroit

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift's first North American show in Bossier City, Louisiana, was a guest-less affair. So was night two in Baton Rouge. Eight days — and one quick jaunt to Norwich, England for a spot at Radio 1's Big Weekend festival — later,  Swift served her first  1989 tour surprise: Dan Reynolds, who pumped his fists with Swift as they traded vocals on Imagine Dragons' 2012 track, "Radioactive."

Little Big Town, “Pontoon” in Pittsburgh

Taylor Swift

Despite a dramatic, all-encompassing turn to pop on 1989 , Swift is always ready for the country: In Pittsburgh, she brought out Alabama outfit Little Big Town for their 2012 Number One, "Pontoon," an ode to on-the-water revelry with a delightfully cheeky hook — "Out here in the open/Mmmmm-motorboatin'." Swift's backup dancers even came out in swim trunks and goggles, and some were wrapped in unicorn inner tubes.

Echosmith, “Cool Kids”; Rachel Platten, “Fight Song” in Philadelphia

Taylor

Over two nights in Philadelphia, Swift shone the spotlight on the next crop of pop superstars. During her first show, she brought out Echosmith's Sydney Sierota  to perform the group's breakout single, "Cool Kids." And on night two, she was joined by Rachel Platten. The pair belted Platten's empowering, piano-driven smash, "Fight Song," Swift gazing like a proud peer as the rising singer handled the track's stirring bridge on her own.

The Weeknd, “Can’t Feel My Face” in East Rutherford, NJ (Night One)

Taylor Swift

Swift broke out the big guns for her first show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. In addition to a duet with the Weeknd on his summer hit, "Can't Feel My Face," the pop star welcomed the U.S. women's national soccer team to walk the catwalk during "Style" with their World Cup trophy . Topping it all off, Swift assembled a sizable chunk of her girl gang, including Lily Aldridge, Lena Dunham, Gigi Hadid and Hailee Steinfeld to join her for "Bad Blood."

Nick Jonas, “Jealous” in East Rutherford, NJ (Night Two)

Taylor Swift

Swift didn't disappoint her New York–area fans at her second show at MetLife. "Style" featured another array of friends including Candice Swanepoel, Lily Aldridge, Uzo Aduba, Karlie Kloss, Behati Prinsloo and Gigi Hadid; but the night's big guest was Nick Jonas, who lead a bombastic rendition of his soulful pop hit, "Jealous."

Lorde, “Royals”; Jason Derulo, “Want to Want Me” in Washington, D.C.

Taylor Swift

After her star-packed New York stand, Swift kept things relatively simple in Washington, D.C. On night one, friend and pop prodigy Lorde hit the stage for "Royals," while the following night featured Jason Derulo. The R&B singer dutifully took the reins of the propulsive "Want to Want Me," getting so wrapped up in the heat of the moment his shirt mysteriously vanished by the end of the song.

Andy Grammer, “Honey, I’m Good”; Sam Hunt, “Take Your Time” in Chicago

Taylor Swift

On her 2011  Speak Now tour, Swift welcomed burgeoning blue-eyed pop singer Andy Grammer to the stage for a rendition of his breakout single, "Keep Your Head Up." Four years later, she trotted Grammer out again on her first night in Chicago for a performance of his equally infectious 2015 single, "Honey, I'm Good." The next night, Swift gave some shine to rising country crooner Sam Hunt, who parked himself next to Swift for a duet of his fetching, half-rapped ode to slow, simple love, "Take Your Time."

Walk the Moon, “Shut Up and Dance”; MKTO, “Classic” in Foxborough, MA

Taylor Swift

With "Fight Song" and "Can't Feel My Face" already under her belt, Swift continued to plow through the various tracks vying for song of the summer 2015. Walk the Moon's slow burner, "Shut Up and Dance" peaked at Number Two on the Hot 100 this July after being released in September, 2014, and Swift and frontman Nicholas Petricca offered an outsized rendition of the ebullient earworm. She replicated that same energy with MKTO the following night during a sizzling performance of the duo's 2014 song-of-the-summer contender, "Classic."

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JO_U0747BzM]

Nico and Vinz, “Am I Wrong” in Vancouver

Taylor Swift

The 1989 tour rolled into Canada with Norwegian duo Nico and Vinz joining Swift on stage for their 2014 track "Am I Wrong. The song's thumping percussion and achingly triumphant hook wouldn't sound out of place in Swift's own set list, and the pop star adapted easily to the track, slinking around the stage and smiling widely as she sang with the duo.

Fetty Wap, “Trap Queen” in Seattle

Taylor Swift

The love song that warmed hearts across the world this summer was given the duet it always deserved when Swift teamed up with Fetty Wap for his beloved breakout, "Trap Queen." Swift kept the romantic vibes going later, when she walked the catwalk during "Style" with the Pacific Northwest's cutest couple, Ciara and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

Fifth Harmony, “Worth It”; Little Mix, “Black Magic” in Santa Clara, CA

Taylor Swift

Girl groups ruled during Swift's two-night stop in Santa Clara, California. At her first show, Swift welcomed Fifth Harmony for a performance of "Worth It," easily nestling into her role as the sixth harmonizer on the group's silky, bombastic, horn-laced single. The next night, U.K. vocal quartet Little Mix took the stage for a sugar-coated rendition of "Black Magic."

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yE6BqsMp02k]

Kobe Bryant; OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, “Counting Stars” in Los Angeles (Night One)

Taylor Swift

The 1989 world tour parked itself at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for a whopping five nights at the end of August, and the run found Swift achieving a notable milestone: Sixteen sold-out shows at the famed venue — a number equal to the NBA Championships banners hung by the Los Angeles Lakers. Fittingly, Lakers star Kobe Bryant was on hand during night one to raise a banner in Swift's honor. The show also featured a musical surprise for good measure, with OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder hitting the stage for "Counting Stars."

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh-68HBJr1M]

Uzo Aduba, “White Horse”; Mary J. Blige, “Doubt” and “Family Affair” in Los Angeles (Night Two)

Taylor Swift

While not all of Swift's guests have been musicians, Orange Is the New Black star Uzo Aduba doubled down on her East Rutherford catwalk cameo and coaxed a deep cut out of Swift in Los Angeles. Aduba revealed a set of deep, gorgeous pipes as she took lead on  Fearless  hit "White Horse" while Swift plucked at her acoustic guitar and delivered backup vocals.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1Ta9KjSszU]

Later, Swift brought out Mary J. Blige for something old and something new: First, "Doubt," from Blige's 2014 effort, The London Sessions , then the still swinging "Family Affair." Capping it all off, Swift welcomed "Blank Space" video star, Sean O'Pry to the stage for "Style,"  though he also had to share the catwalk with Matt LeBlanc and Chris Rock.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRNb3Upu64A]

Alanis Morissette, “You Oughta Know”; Natalie Maines, “Goodbye Earl” in Los Angeles (Night Three)

Taylor Swift

Night three in Los Angeles found Swift paying tribute to two Nineties heroes, the Dixie Chicks and Alanis Morissette. First, Swift showed she hadn't lost her country twang, stringing out and punching up her drawl alongside Natalie Maines on the Dixie Chicks' boot-stomping "Goodbye Earl." Later, Swift and Morissette scorched the stadium — and exes everywhere — with a devastating performance of the latter's breakup anthem "You Oughta Know."

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J47TiDvxnTg]

Noted Swiftie Ellen DeGeneres closed out the proceedings in characteristically ridiculous fashion, donning a sparkling silver jumpsuit to match Swift's shimmering dress as they walked the catwalk together on "Style."

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpjxAPHoW8o]

Beck and St. Vincent, “Dreams”; John Legend, “All of Me” in Los Angeles (Night Four)

Taylor Swift

Swift cobbled together a delightfully unique collaboration for her fourth night at Staples, welcoming Beck and St. Vincent for a performance of the former's recent single, "Dreams." The driving pop-rock cut marks a significant turn from Beck's mellow Morning Phase  LP, but the musician relished sharing stadium spotlight with Swift as St. Vincent slashed away at the song's crunchy, funked-out guitar riffs. Later, Swift slowed things down with John Legend, who commandeered the pop star's piano and led the way during a stunning duet on his tear-jerking power ballad "All of Me."

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3D5NGDW4lQ]

Selena Gomez, “Good For You”; Justin Timberlake, “Mirrors”; Phoebe Buffay, “Smelly Cat” in Los Angeles (Night Five)

Taylor Swift

The final night of Swift's Los Angeles stand belonged to a little-known coffeeshop singer-songwriter: Phoebe Buffay. Or rather, Lisa Kudrow, who reprised her Friends  role for a performance of Buffay's beloved Central Perk smash, "Smelly Cat."

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4gIyPCp9H0]

The night also featured two slightly more well-known musicians: Selena Gomez, who stopped by for a rousing rendition of her tortured slow jam "Good for You," and Justin Timberlake, who took the stage for his devotional paean "Mirrors."

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlVVCYOqw48]

Omi, “Cheerleader”; Avril Lavigne, “Complicated” in San Diego

Taylor Swift

Swift did not slow down after her five-night L.A. takeover. Three days after her final Staples Center gig, and a few hours south on Interstate 5 in San Diego, she brought out Omi for another summer 2015 anthem, "Cheerleader." Swift also invited Avril Lavigne up for a performance of her 2002 breakout hit "Complicated," a still perfectly pained jam that proves the cup of teen angst will never run dry.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YtQZh9Ps8A]

Wiz Khalifa, “See You Again” in Houston

Taylor Swift

The 1989 tour settled into its fourth month, and the final weeks of summer, in Houston. Swift once again surprised her fans with another recent ubiquitous hit, calling to the stage Wiz Khalifa, who helmed his  Furious 7 hip-hop power ballad, "See You Again." Swift dutifully stood in for the song's co-writer, Charlie Puth, belting the aching, striving chorus he sings on record.

The Band Perry, “If I Die Young” in Indianapolis

Taylor Swift

Swift offered another nod to her roots in Indianapolis, strapping on a sparkling acoustic guitar and joining the Band Perry for a rousing rendition of their hit "If I Die Young." The song's delicate instrumentals and musings might seem out of place for a massive pop production like the 1989 tour, but Swift and the Band Perry deftly reconstructed the track as a stadium-sized tearjerker.

Echosmith, “Cool Kids” in Columbus, OH

Taylor Swift

Echosmith singer Sydney Sierota earned the unique distinction of being the only performer to take the stage twice, in two different cities on the  1989 tour (save Uzo Aduba, who performed one night, and strutted the stage during "Style" the other). Sierota re-teamed with Swift in Columbus, Ohio, several months after her initial cameo in Philadelphia, delivering another infectious rendition of Echosmith's breakout hit, "Cool Kids."

Dierks Bentley, “Every Mile a Memory” in Kansas City, MO

Taylor Swift

Swift kept the country vibes going in Kansas City, welcoming Dierks Bentley to the 1989  party to breeze through his 2006 hit "Every Mile a Memory." Bentley and Swift traded lines and coalesced for harmonies, switching up the lyrics — "Red sun down, over a Kansas City sky," Swift bellowed — for some perfectly acceptable pandering to the hometown crowd.

Steven Tyler, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”; Kelsea Ballerini, “Love Me Like You Mean It”; Alison Krauss, “When You Say Nothing at All” in Nashville (Night One)

Taylor Swift

With country clearly on her mind, Swift was did not disappoint the Music City crowd at her highly anticipated homecoming concerts in Nashville. On night one, Swift proved she's still tapped into the country world with a rousing duet on "Love Me Like You Mean It" with rising singer Kelsea Ballerini. But she also paid tribute to  vaunted veteran Alison Krauss  with a performance of the musician's 2002 track "When You Say Nothing at All." For good measure, Swift also welcomed recent Nashville transplant Steven Tyler, who helped her belt Aerosmith's endlessly eye-watering Armageddon  anthem, "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0xHaJICsDw]

Mick Jagger, “Satisfaction”; Leona Lewis, “Bleeding Love” in Nashville (Night Two)

Taylor Swift

Swift switched musical directions during her second night in Nashville, but her guests were far from disappointing. The star first welcomed Leona Lewis for a performance of Lewis' devastating 2007 ballad "Bleeding Love." Then Swift served up one of her biggest surprises of the 1989 tour so far: Mick Jagger, who peacocked on stage for "Satisfaction" — much to the delight of one grandma in particular .

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eq0fgvavAuA]

Nelly, “The Fix” and “Hot in Herre” in St. Louis

Taylor Swift

Hometown hero Nelly served up a double shot during his appearance in St. Louis , first pairing with Swift for a duet of his sultry, Marvin Gaye–sampling new single, "The Fix." But the house truly came down during "Hot in Herre," which featured an appearance from Haim, who closed out their run as  1989  tour openers that night. While Nelly breezed through the 2002 hit, the sister act and Swift dished out the indelible hook and some expertly choreographed dance moves.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJ-JMWwAZS8]

Keith Urban, “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16” and “Somebody Like You” in Toronto (Night One)

Taylor Swift

Keith Urban joined Swift at her first show in Toronto, proving country that clicks both Down Under and up in the Great White North. The pair teamed up for two performances, first kicking out Urban's latest single, "John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16," which they followed with the musician's 2002 Number One "Somebody Like You."

Charli XCX, “Boom Clap” in Toronto (Night Two)

Taylor Swift

Despite canceling some tour dates this summer so she could focus on new music, Charli XCX gladly hopped back onstage with Swift at her second concert in Toronto. The pair took a shot at pure pop perfection and easily hit the mark with a bombastic rendition of XCX's 2014 smash "Boom Clap."

Ellie Goulding, “Love Me Like You Do” in Arlington, TX

Taylor Swift

Swift has enlisted Ellie Goulding   to surprise her audiences on previous tours, so it's no surprise that the British singer eventually took the stage when her path crossed with the 1989 tour. The pair tackled "Love Me Like You Do," Goulding's summer hit from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack , belting its indelible, amorous hook over a chorus of bombastic synths.

Miranda Lambert, “Little Red Wagon” in Greensboro, NC

Taylor Swift

Swift delivered another country hit in the midst of her pop bonanza, welcoming bona fide badass Miranda Lambert to the stage to perform her killer Platinum  single "Little Red Wagon." Swift looked happy to let Lambert take lead on the fierce track. She jumped in with some of her own backyard swagger but primarily sat back and marveled as one of country's contemporary masters did what she does best.

Tove Lo, “Talking Body” in Atlanta

Taylor Swift

Swift is well aware of the unique knack Swedes have for making killer pop, having worked extensively in recent years with Stockholm-based mastermind Max Martin. In Atlanta, Swift welcomed another Swedish star in her own right , burgeoning synth-pop singer-songwriter Tove Lo, who had the crowd howling with a performance of her sensual, slow-burning "Talking Body."

Pitbull, “Give Me Everything”; Ricky Martin, “Livin’ La Vida Loca” in Miami

Taylor Swift

Swift took her talents to South Beach for the penultimate show of her North American trek, doing everything to delight the hometown crowd short of bringing out Will Smith for "Miami." First, NBA star Dwyane Wade presented Swift  with her own Miami Heat jersey — number 13, of course — and soon after, the pop star was joined by Miami native Pitbull for a performance of "Give Me Everything." Saving the best for last, Swift welcomed Ricky Martin, who came out to a frenzied crowd and the still-transcendent opening horn riff of his 1999 hit "Livin' La Vida Loca."

Taylor Swift's style evolution

From humble red-carpet beginnings to stadium tour chic, check out her eras of fashion.

Mary is EW.com's assistant features editor. She writes about movies, books, fashion, and the Real Housewives.

Taylor Swift has proven herself to be an icon of modern music — and style.

The "Shake It Off" singer has set Billboard records and even got an apology from Ticketmaster during a Senate hearing after it ticked off Switfties around the world for bungling the Verified Fan presale for Eras Tour tickets .

As Swift continues to come into her own as an artist — filling stadiums and releasing hit album after hit rerecorded album — her style has evolved with her.

From the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2006 through the Eras Tour and VMAs in 2023, we look back on how her fashion has grown alongside her irresistible melodies.

2006 ACM Awards

For her first Academy of Country Music Awards — which took place just a few weeks before her debut single "Tim McGraw" dropped — Swift wore a perfectly country dress with a handkerchief hem and, naturally, cowboy boots. She would return to the show the following year to collect the award for New Female Vocalist of the Year.

2007 CMT Music Awards

For the 2007 CMT Music Awards, where she won Breakthrough Video of the Year for "Tim McGraw," Swift maintained her princess profile by bringing back this iridescent, aquamarine dress from the wistful "Teardrops on My Guitar" music video while wearing her long curly hair loose.

"Our Song" music video (2007)

For this joyous, consciously girly clip, Swift sang about a "slammin' screen door" and "sneakin' out late, tappin' on your window" while wearing a periwinkle corset and tulle skirt.

2008 Grammy Awards

Swift's 2008 Grammys look recalled the frothy gown from the "Our Song" video, but glammed it up for the carpet, coming in a darker shade with floral embellishments.

"Love Story" music video (2008)

Swift wasn't shy about rearranging classic literature with her "Love Story" lyrics (that's not how Romeo and Juliet ends, kids!), but she kept the wardrobe old-school. Her cream-colored dress in the romantic music video was made in her then-favorite style of drop-waisted corset dresses, keeping up her distinctly fairy-tale image.

"You Belong With Me" music video (2009)

Here come the white dresses! While Swift's band-geek uniform and Junior Jewels T-shirt in the "You Belong With Me" video are obviously iconic, her arrival at the prom in this sweet white dress (the first of many) marks her full self-actualization as both a nerdy young woman in love and a white-dress-wearing singer of swoony country-pop songs.

"Fifteen" music video (2009)

And here's a more casual take! In the "Fifteen" music video, Swift slowly cat-walked through her new high school while reflecting upon growing up, as all innocent first-year students do, while wearing a ruffled white dress and loose hair.

2009 MTV VMAs

Swift was swept into a very strange narrative (which she would very much like to be excluded from, even now) when she won the Moonman for "You Belong With Me" at the 2009 MTV VMAs . Luckily, she was dressed for the spotlight in this glittering-Greek-goddess gown by KaufmanFranco, a more grown-up look than her princess dresses of the past. (That's not to mention the more grown-up lip color, of which we promise there will be more...)

2010 Grammy Awards

Swift dressed for her big night — winning Album of the Year, among three other awards — at the 2010 Grammys as a mermaid rather than a princess, choosing a glittering blue gown by KaufmanFranco.

2010 Met Gala

The 2010 Met Gala theme was "American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity," which suited Swift well. The singer appeared in a ruffled white dress that aligned perfectly with her own romantic style, as well as the Met's theme, coming from the all-American Ralph Lauren.

Speak Now tour (2011)

Swift began to let her flashy side out during the Speak Now era, for which she wore a fringed, beaded gold dress — with black cowboy boots, because these were still her country days, lest we forget — while touring the album.

2012 Grammy Awards

Swift glittered in Zuhair Murad couture at the 2012 Grammys, in a sophisticated silhouette that marked a departure from her princess-style days.

2012 Billboard Music Awards

For the BBMAs in the spring of 2012, the star appeared without her signature curls, instead sporting straight hair and blunt bangs. The sleeker 'do matched her Elie Saab dress, the color of which also departed from the sweet pastels of days past — and also, possibly, was a clue to the title of her next album...

It was back to white for Swift at the VMAs in 2012, where she wore — gasp! — a chic pantsuit instead of a dress. Get used to those clean lines — and that red lipstick.

"22" music video

Swift posed through the "22" music video in a shimmery T-shirt that read "NOT A LOT GOING ON AT THE MOMENT," black shorts, a black hat, and heart-shaped sunglasses that matched her now-constantly red lips. The look firmly established the pared-down, retro-cool (but quirky — the sunglasses!) vibe of the Red era.

"Begin Again" music video

When Red -era Swift wasn't dressed as a slightly-too-polished hipster, she went more literally retro, looking like a 1950s ingénue in fitted dresses and cardigans, like in the "Begin Again" music video.

2012 iHeartRadio Music Festival

Swift brought the new era to the stage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in 2012 (and then on the Red tour) in costumes that matched her "22" video look — but with just a little more sparkle.

2013 Grammy Awards

Through it all, Swift's commitment to airy white dresses has never wavered (um, except maybe until Reputation ), and she hit the Grammys carpet in 2013 in this Grecian-glam look by J. Mendel — a sleeker version of her 2009 VMAs dress.

2014 Grammy Awards

Who says simplicity can't make a statement? The singer sparkled at the 2014 Grammys in this Gucci Première column dress.

2014 Met Gala

Once again, the Met Gala theme seemed designed specifically for Taylor Swift in 2014, when the ball celebrated Charles James. The legendary designer's elegant style lined up perfectly with Swift's penchant for '50s silhouettes, and she chose a very on-theme pale pink Oscar de la Renta gown for the occasion.

Swift's outfit at the 2014 VMAs, which took place in the lead-up to 1989 , marked a new irreverence and a departure from the ultra-femininity of the previous era. She played with proportion in a long-sleeved, short alphabet-printed romper by Mary Katrantzou, topping the look with red lips and chopped hair.

"Blank Space" music video

The self-aware — and exceptionally stylish — "Blank Space" music video made clear that Swift was over being the midcentury sweetheart and the sexy hipster that she alternately dressed as in the Red era. She went through a whole slew of fabulous costumes in the clip as a daydream-turned-nightmare, but none expresses the evolution better than this leopard-print blouse, smeared eye makeup, and haywire expression.

1989 tour with Selena Gomez (2015)

The album 1989 was all about crop tops for Taylor Swift (keep reading!), and on the album tour — during which she famously brought dozens of her BFFs to the stage — she often wore this bejeweled two-piece outfit in one of her all-time favorite colors.

1989 tour with Ellen DeGeneres (2015)

Swift also brought some full-blown showwoman sparkle to her 1989 show, and Ellen DeGeneres apparently loved the look so much, she copied it for her appearance on the tour.

2015 Grammy Awards

Mid-2010s Swift never met a cutout she didn't like, as evidenced by the teal ombré Elie Saab she wore to the Grammys in 2015.

2015 Billboard Music Awards

We weren't lying about the cutouts! Or the white! Swift looked sharp at the 2015 BBMAs — but not as sugary-sweet as her earlier all-white looks — in a sequined, floor-skimming jumpsuit by Balmain.

The crop top queen made a bit of an edgy choice when she hit the 2015 VMAs — where she presented her dear old pal Kanye with the Video Vanguard Award — in a sequined houndstooth tracksuit by Ashish.

2016 Vanity Fair Oscar party

Swift was the epitome of sleek in Alexandre Vauthier couture at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in 2016.

2016 Grammy Awards

Swift stuck to the clean lines and sleek fabrics she favored throughout the 1989 years, but went with a bold palette at the 2016 Grammys in a lipstick-red crop top over a voluminous hot pink maxi skirt by Atelier Versace.

2016 Met Gala

Taylor first dipped her toe in the dark side at the 2016 Met Gala, the theme for which was "Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology." The singer topped her Louis Vuitton minidress with lightened hair and darkened lips—and took the new look all the way to the dance floor with Tom Hiddleston .

2016 Fourth of July party with Gigi Hadid and Cara Delevingne

Swift's hottest accessory of the 1989 era? Her squad, naturally. They didn't just coordinate their wardrobe to play a team of badass fighters in the "Bad Blood" music video , they also sported matching patriotic swimsuits, memorialized on Instagrams, for Swift's highly photogenic Fourth of July party in 2016.

"Look What You Made Me Do" music video (2017)

Look what we made her wear. Swift made clear she wasn't messing around when she debuted the video for Reputation 's lead single, in which she kills off all her sparkling former selves (including at least five wearing outfits featured in this very list), while the cool new Taylor wears black shorts and a black sweatshirt over a fishnet bodysuit — and, of course, dark red lips.

Reputation tour (2018)

Dark New Taylor was the star of the Reputation tour, and she brought the aesthetic introduced in "Look What You Made Me Do" (and an accompanying snake motif) to the stage with this glittering, single-sleeved black leotard.

Grim as much of the Reputation era was, however, Swift hinted at a light at the end of the tunnel, performing part of the tour show in this rainbow romper (which also brought back the showwoman beading she's always embraced onstage). Still, nothing could have fully prepared us for the sartorial pendulum swing that came next...

2018 American Music Awards

Swift began to move toward a new era when she attended the AMAs in 2018, looking like a human disco ball on the carpet in a mirrored Balmain minidress and thigh-high boots.

2019 iHeartRadio Music Awards

The Reputation tour's hint of rainbow sparkles notwithstanding, 2019 brought the swiftest (ha), most radical style switch of Swift's career when she threw out her burgundy lips and black bodysuits for a candy-colored fashion fantasy. Consistently hinting at the new color scheme on Instagram, Swift officially debuted the new look at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, wearing a Rosa Bloom romper covered in iridescent paillettes and butterfly heels.

2019 TIME 100 gala

Swift attended the 2019 TIME 100 Gala, where she was one of the magazine's honorees, in a throwback look that was also totally new. Her pale pink and yellow gown by J. Mendel alluded to her fairy-tale style origins, but the sugary palette and impractical sleeves suggest a greater sense of irony and self-awareness about the whole bubblegum princess aesthetic. She's wearing a heart-shaped ring, for crying out loud!

"Me!" music video (2019)

Over the course of the music video for Lover 's first single, "Me!," Swift dances through a pastel-rainbow fantasyland in seven different outfits (including '50s- and '60s-inspired dresses that speak to her retro sensibilities), many of which coordinate with her collaborator Brendon Urie 's colorful wardrobe. These Candyland-esque uniforms echo some of Swift's former stagewear, and her rose-tinted hair, which also changes elsewhere in the clip, reflects the pink-tipped new 'do she wore to unveil the video — and, with it, a new musical era.

2019 Billboard Music Awards

Soon after dropping "Me!," Swift opened the 2019 BBMAs with the song, marking her first live performance of the Lover era. On the carpet, she wore an elaborately ruffled lilac minidress; for the album's onstage debut, the singer's new penchant for pastel sparkles was on full display with this single-sleeved, fringed leotard.

"You Need to Calm Down" music video (2019)

The second single off Lover was Swift's most political yet, a rainbow-colored statement of allyship. The music video , which features over 20 celebrities (most of whom identify as LGBTQ), takes place in the world's most vibrant trailer park, which Swift struts through in a hot pink fuzzy coat, then a starry shirt tied at her waist. Most memorable of all, however, is the French fry costume that she wears to a food fight where she meets up with Katy Perry , dressed as a hamburger. Their moment of fast-food sisterhood made headlines , as it ended a years-long feud (which reportedly inspired another Swift single with cameo-filled video ) between the singers.

2019 Teen Choice Awards

To accept the first-ever Teen Choice Icon Award , Swift intensified Lover 's rainbow palette in a patterned Versace bodysuit and shorts under a matching blazer.

Selena Gomez Reflects on Her Growth at Wondermind Panel: 'Makes Me Sick to Hear the Things I Was Saying About Myself'

Gomez spoke about her mental health transformation following the release of 'My Mind & Me' at a SXSW panel on Sunday

Selena Gomez is talking about her self-love journey over the past few years!

The "Love On" singer, 31, appeared on a SXSW panel called "Mindfulness Over Perfection: Getting Real On Mental Health" with her mother and Wondermind co-founder Mandy Teefey on Sunday.

When asked by moderator Dr. Jessica Stern if releasing her 2022 Apple TV+ documentary My Mind & Me , which focused on mental health, changed the way she treated herself, Gomez didn't mince words.

"It makes me sick to hear the things that I was saying about myself in the beginning. It bums me out," the Only Murders in the Building star said, noting that the film was shot over six years.

Apple TV+

"But I think everybody can relate to that feeling," she continued, adding, "It's important to speak to yourself with kindness, but I don't think I really understood that [at the start of the film]."

My Mind & Me , directed by Alek Keshishian, followed the pop star as she struggled with confidence and body image issues, suicidal thoughts that caused her to cancel a tour and led to a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, her life with lupus and burnout she was experiencing as an international celebrity.

Gomez said she was inspired to share her journey and be more authentic after a conversation with Teefey, 47, after they watched Girl, Interrupted and started talking about how strange the entertainment industry is and how Gomez felt like she didn't "fit in."

During the conversation, the "Lose You to Love Me" singer acknowledged that "you can't force someone" to take an honest look at their mental health and treat it before they're ready.

"There was a lot of people that cared about me more than I cared about myself that really wanted me to do things I wasn't ready for. I had my rock bottom, and I had to do it in my time," Gomez said, reflecting on her mental health journey.

"It took a couple of tries, but I like to think and hope I'm in a much better place now," she added.

Gomez and Teefey founded the online community Wondermind in December 2021 to give people a safe space online to talk about their mental health struggles.

'I am in a better place now': Selena Gomez talks mental health at SXSW

Editor's note: This story includes references to suicide. Information about suicide warning signs and resources for people in crisis can be found at the bottom of this story.

"Hi," Selena Gomez said to the full crowd at South by Southwest on Sunday afternoon after sitting down. Then she introduced herself: "I'm Selena."

The pop star and "Only Murders in the Building" actress shared her mental health story along with her mother, Mandy Teefey; New York Jets defensive lineman Solomon Thomas; and therapists Corey Yeager and Jessica Stern. Gomez and Teefey co-founded Wondermind, a community-based mental health website and soon-to-be app, and Thomas and his family started the Defensive Line, a nonprofit helping youths of color with mental health and suicide prevention.

With the release of her 2022 documentary "My Mind and Me," Gomez has been public about her bipolar diagnosis and the mental health crisis that led her to cancel her 2016 tour.

"I was terrified to do it," she said. "The moment I did it, there was just an insane release. ... It has helped relieve the anxiety of trying to keep it in."

The feedback of fans, and others who have gone through something similar, has reassured her that talking about her mental health is the right thing to do.

We have to talk about mental health

Celebrities such as Gomez and Thomas sharing their stories does help, Yeager said. If all we see on Instagram is "Selena doing great work, Solomon doing great work, we don't see the grind," he said.

For Thomas, "to be honest about my mental health took time to get here," he said. He grew up in locker rooms where being vulnerable, being emotional, wasn't safe. He lost his sister Ella to suicide.

"I was hit by grief," he said. "I couldn't go to sleep. I couldn't wake up." He was having suicidal ideations. "I had to do the work," he said. "I learned it's OK to not be OK."

Now he openly talks in the locker room, in public, about feeling emotions, about mental health.

"This world needs more people speaking up," Thomas said.

He nodded to the anxiety of speaking at SXSW by saying: "Hey, I am a little anxious. I've got this speaking event coming up. There are 17,000 people in here."

How we talk to ourselves

Teefey talked about growing up always feeling different because of her mental health. She told herself, "Oh, I must be crazy." Then about her attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: "I am stupid."

"It became my truth," she said.

She now lives by the rule "If I wouldn't say that to my best friend, I am not allowed to say that to myself."

Yeager confirmed that it is easier to live with negative patterns of bad self-talk. Positive thinking requires work.

"I will give grace to someone, but I won't give grace to myself," he said.

For Thomas, the first 16 years of his 18-year NFL career, he "talked to myself terribly."

Now you will see him on the sidelines talking to himself: "I will. I can. I am confident." He no longer tells himself that he is not good enough. "That destroyed my confidence," he said.

Gomez said that lack of confidence was real. "I work in the weirdest industry," she said. "I felt like I didn't fit in."

The documentary allowed Gomez to relive how she talked about herself during the six years the film covers.

"It makes me sick to hear the things I said to myself. It bums me out," she said.

She was saying things she would never say to herself now, after going to a treatment center and engaging in regular therapy, including dialectical behavior therapy, which uses tools such as checking the facts of your thoughts to get out of the spin of them in your head.

"All the things I was bitching about then, I am grateful for now," she said.

Putting yourself first is good mental health

Teefey, who was a producer of the series "13 Reasons Why" along with her daughter, had her own mental health crisis during the second season of that show.

"I was crumbling," she said. "I spent all these years investing my energy giving to others."

She was having seizures and was crying every day. She went to a treatment center for the first time.

"I had to sit with who I was," she said of treatment. "It was lovely because I had no cellphone. You have to focus on yourself."

For Gomez, many people in her life wanted her to seek treatment before she finally went.

"I wasn't ready for it," she said. "It took me a couple of tries, but I think I am in a better place now."

What is now in their mental health toolbox?

For Gomez, it's therapy and meetings. She especially likes the dialectical behavior therapy technique of RAIN:

  • Recognize what is going on.
  • Allow the experience to be there, just as it is.
  • Investigate with kindness.
  • Natural awareness, which comes from not identifying with the experience.

Teefey loves taking a class to learn more as well as writing in a journal.

"It soothes me. It gives me a sense of control. It helps me find peace," she said.

Yeager employs what he calls a supreme court of three to five people who know him well. He can call them and get their opinion and relieve the pressure.

Thomas uses meditation to ground himself.

"I'm a big overthinker," he said. He also journals and said, "Therapy saved my life. You get to know yourself more."

He's an advocate for simple self-care, such as going out in the sun, getting 20 minutes of exercise, being off your phone and drinking enough water.

"It can be simple things," he said.
