Gir National Park: A safari guide’s tips on the best time to visit, hotels, permits

By Shradha Shahani

Gir National Park A safari guides tips on the best time to visit hotels permits

Just minutes after the first ray of sun hit Gir National Park, we spot our first lioness standing tall on the dirt track—her mane a lustrous gold. She disappears into the bushes and our jeep moves an inch to catch a glimpse of her again. She is joined by her cubs; one rolls over her stomach, the other tugs her ear. She licks them as they cosy up against her. By now, at least eight jeeps have surrounded this sight. The clicking cameras and whispers don’t faze them. They are comfortable with human company. “That’s the best part about lions. Unlike tigers, they are sociable animals. They walk alongside jeeps and are spotted with their family. It’s a joy watching them,” says Mahida.

Last November, we were lucky to spot a lioness on two out of three safaris. While a lot depends on luck, there are various factors that can make or break your safari experience, from the slot you pick to the proximity of your hotel to the gate. Prakash Mahida , who has been working at the park for nearly 14 years, shares all the insider information so you have the best sightings on your next trip to Gir National Park.

What makes Gir National Park special?

Gir National Park in Gujarat is India's last remaining home to Asiatic lions. The park is home to nearly 600 lions and the Gujarat government takes pride in the initiatives taken to grow the population of lions in the region since its decline due to hunting in the 19th century.

Unlike tigers and leopards who are solitary, lions are social animals. They are the only big cats to live in family units that are known as prides. A pride can include up to three males, a dozen females and their cubs. Lions are also territorial and each male reigns over kilometres of Gir. If you spot a lioness, chances are high that you won’t spot one alone, making the experience all the more exciting. In 2021, Mahida spotted 22 lions on a single safari route. “We were driving through route two at dawn. At first, we saw two males cross the road. As we drove a little further, we spotted nearly five lions, seven lionesses and a litter of cubs. We could see cubs rolling over on their backs, jumping on their mothers and playing with each other. It looked like a scene straight out of The Lion King,” says Mahida.

Over the years, lions have become almost comfortable in the company of humans visiting the national park. So, you won’t just spot lions ambling through the forest or taking shade under a tree, but also get to witness some of the most intimate moments of their lives.

What to spot at Gir National Park?

Mahida says the key to a great lion spotting is to listen to what the forest is telling you. Trackers and guides keep their eyes and ears peeled for fresh pug marks, a sambal’s warning and also the call of a scavenger bird. While the lion is the star attraction of the park, the dry and deciduous forests of Gir are home to a host of other animals such as the sambar (the largest Indian deer), chowsingha (the world’s only four-horned antelope), Indian fox, jackal, striped hyena and the black buck.

The national park also has nearly 425 species of birds and is the habitat of critically endangered white-backed and long-billed vultures, the Egyptian vulture, the greater-spotted eagle and the endangered Palla’s fish eagle. While driving through the park, keep your eyes peeled for the Asian paradise flycatcher, the red-breasted flycatcher and the fantail.

What's the best time to go to Gir National Park?

The best time to visit Gir National Park is in March, says Mahida. This is when the winter is just starting to fade and the summer hasn’t set in yet. The forest begins to dry up, and lions and other animals are forced to visit the manmade ponds in the park. While the peak summer (April and May) is great for sightings, the mercury tips over 40°C and is not favourable for sightseeing. Mahida says this is a good time for wildlife photographers to visit the park. The winter months of November to February are pleasant, however, it’s important to be patient during your safaris, as the greenery and low visibility could make it difficult to track animal movement.

How many safaris should you do during a 3-night stay?

Mahida recommends at least three-four safaris during your stay, alternating between the morning and afternoon slots. Rest on the day of your arrival. Pick a morning slot on one day, an afternoon on the other, and an evening on the third for the most diverse sightings. Keep some buffer time right before your departure as the park is over three hours from the airport.

What are the best safari slots at Gir National Park?

Gir National Park offers three safari slots—two in the morning and one in the afternoon. “Lions are most active early in the morning. So, if you want to spot them ambling through the forest or playing with their cubs, pick the 6.30am slot. The mid-morning slot is good for leopard sightings because they come out when the lion starts to rest. And in the afternoon slot, you are likely to spot lions resting,” says Mahida.

How to book a safari permit at Gir and how much does it cost?

The permit can be purchased from the official Gujarat government website. Permits get sold out very quickly, so Mahida advises booking them at least 60 to 90 days in advance. A permit for a safari costs Rs1,000; there’s also a per-guest entry charge of Rs200.

Gir National Park A safari guides tips on the best time to visit hotels permits

How to book a jeep and guide at Gir?

The permit does not include the jeep and guide charges. The hotel you’re staying at can arrange for a jeep and a pick-up from the hotel about 30 minutes before the gates open. The jeep costs Rs3,000, whereas a guide comes at an additional cost of Rs400. The guide is assigned by the park authorities once you present your permit at the gate. However, if you wish, you can pick your own guide at an additional cost.

Which zones are the best at Gir National Park?

Unlike many national parks in India, Gir does not follow a zone system. The park has 13 routes, and to ensure they are not overburdened with too many jeeps, the route is assigned to the guide at the time of entry. However, trackers do keep an eye out for pug marks, the alert call of a sambal or a scavenger bird to get a sense of the best route to spot a lion.

What are the best hotels in Gir?

If an early morning safari is on your list, Gir Serai - IHCL SeleQtions (doubles from Rs13,000; website ) is your best bet at making it in time. The hotel is less than a five-minute drive from the main gate. While the 38 rooms are basic, they come with all mod-cons. The restaurant offers a taste of the local Kathiawadi cuisine, and on every Saturday guests are treated to a Mashira Nritya performance by the tribal Afro-Indian Siddi community. If luxury is on your mind, and a 20-minute drive to the gate is not a deterrent, head to Aramness Gir (doubles from Rs1,02,000; website ) . The 18 kothis are double-storey suites and come with bathtubs, outdoor showers, shaded courtyards, first-floor verandahs and swimming pools inspired by the stepwells of Gujarat. At Woods at Sasan (doubles from Rs29,000; website ) , the experience goes beyond the lion and jeep safari. There’s birdwatching at dawn (try spotting the 300 avian species found here), lunches cooked over a wood fire in the jungle, rail journeys through forests and a vintage car ride to the Hiran River at teatime. After a long day out, unwind at Som Spa, which offers yoga sessions and Ayurvedic treatments. Also, a 20-minute drive from the gate is The Postcard Gir (doubles from Rs32,000; website ) , a 15-key boutique property surrounded by mango orchards. When you’re not busy spotting lions, the folks at the property will arrange for picnics, leisurely nature walks or a trip to Diu.

Aramness Sasan Gir Gujarat

Besides jeep drives, what else can you do in Gir?

For visitors who don’t manage to spot a big cat in the wild, the gypsy safari at Devalia National Park (a 20-minute drive from the main park) guarantees a sighting. The park is an enclosed sanctuary for lions, leopards, foxes, mongooses and blackbucks that roam freely within this space. Unlike Gir, tickets to Devalia can be booked on the spot.

Somnath Temple, which sits by the Arabian Sea, is an hour’s drive from the national park. The temple is steeped in history and is believed to be the place where the first of the twelve jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva appeared. Catch the sound-and-light show that illuminates the temple every day at 7.45pm.

One can also explore the ancient city of Junagadh, which houses Emperor Ashoka’s rock edicts from the third century BC and a unique blend of Indo-Islamic, British and Gothic architecture. About a 2.5-hour drive away, numerous 12th-century Jain temples sit on the 3,300-foot mountain of Girnar. Woods at Sasan Gir organises a host of activities, including guided birdwatching walks to sight a few of the many 300 species in Gir. You can also get a taste of the village life with a meter-gauge railway journey that takes you through the forests of Sasan to Kansiya Nes, home to the Maldhari or the herdsmen community of Gujarat. At lunchtime, the hotel hosts a meal in the forests where you can try local delicacies hot off a wood fire, and come dinner time, feast on barbeque under a starry night sky.

History of Gir National Park

Once, the expanse that now cradles the Sasan Gir National Park served as the hunting grounds for the British during their reign in India. They pursued the colossal lions and tigers with fervour, wearing their hunts as badges of honour. The year 1899 witnessed a stark decline in the lion population within the Gir forest, attributed to a ravaging famine. In response, Lord Curzon called off his planned hunting excursion to Gir and fervently appealed to the local residents to safeguard the remaining lion populace.

Over time, the Indian Government imposed a ban on hunting and killing in 1960. This intervention heralded a resurgence in the Gir lion population, which thrives under 24x7 surveillance today, accessible solely through captivating photo safaris. This very sanctuary, the Gir National Park, now boasts the accolade of Asia's most safeguarded wildlife haven. The inception of a lion breeding initiative brought forth an augmentation of approximately 180 lions across the park and its adjacent regions.

Vivid Wildlife in the Sanctuary: A Glimpse into the Gir Lion Park

Nestled within Gujarat, the Gir lion park extends a captivating invitation to wildlife enthusiasts, granting them the privilege to observe the majestic Asiatic lions roam freely and securely. The park encompasses a rich biodiversity, harbouring around 2,375 distinct species of fauna. Within this realm, one encounters a tapestry of life, including nearly 38 varieties of mammals, a myriad of insects spanning over 2,000 types, 37 diverse reptile species, and an astonishing assortment of 300 bird species.

The verdant confines are inhabited by a vibrant assembly of herbivores, such as the Nilgai, Chital, Wild boar, Four-horned Chinkara, Sambar, and the graceful Antelope. Moreover, the peripheries of the park offer glimpses of the spirited Blackbucks. This harmonious coexistence paints a vivid tableau of nature's grandeur and diversity.

A larch that he planted himself still grows in the garden, so it’s more than 250 years old. At the time of its foundation, it was a garden with herbs and medicinal plants and was used as an educational center for doctors. Today there are the orangery with its tropical palms, the carp pond, and the immense trees that dot the landscape and turn wonderful golden shades in the autumn. Serebryany Bor’s beaches are the cleanest in the city and very popular among Muscovites. Botanichesky Sad

Greenhouse of Botanical Garden

The garden’s collection is turned into botanical expositions, made with use of modern receptions of landscape architecture. Here you can see a tree nursery, a shadow garden, hothouse complex, collection of flowers, a rosary, exposition of coastal plants, garden of continuous blossoming, Japanese garden and expositions of cultural plants and natural flora plants. The biggest part of Garden is the Tree nursery occupying the space of 75 hectares. About 2 thousand wood plants grow here. Another big exposition of the Garden is nature Flora, divided into six botanic-geographical collections: European part of Russia, Caucuses, Central Asia, Siberia and Far East. It is especially decorative in spring, during Oriental cherry blossoming and in fall, when foliage blazes in crimson colors.

Moscow historic parks

Historic nature parks and estates once were the mansions of the Moscow aristocracy. At that far times the estates were outside the Moscow city limits, but after the city expansion and urbanization, they became easily accessible.

Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoe

Kolomenskoye Museum and Park

The chief attraction of the park is undoubtedly the stone Church of the Ascension of the Lord. It was constructed in 1532 by order of Tsar Vasily III to commemorate the birth of his son and heir, Ivan the Terrible. But there is a lot more to see in the park: the pretty Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan – with its bright azure domes and plenty of gold. Further into the park there is a charming Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist, built by Ivan the Terrible to mark his coronation.

Kuskovo

Kuskovo Park

Kuskovo Park is one of the oldest country estates in Moscow. It was given to General Sheremetev by Peter the Great in 1715, but was left to fall into neglect before being plundered by Napoleon’s troops in 1812. Nowadays the estate has been restored to its former glory and is a good example of Russian 18th Century imperial architecture. The palace is a fine and rare example of wooden neoclassicism. It was completed in 1775, and the rich interiors remain unchanged since 1779. It includes a room hung with exclusive exquisite Flemish tapestries, an abundance of silk wallpaper and an impressive collection of 18th century European and Russian paintings. The palace looks onto the lake, which is surrounded by smaller pavilions: pretty Italian, Dutch and Swiss Cottages, Blank’s Hermitage and the old Orangery, where the State Ceramics Museum is located now, an extensive and absorbing collection of porcelain from the 18th century to the present day. On the other side of the lake is a large wood popular with local cyclists and joggers.

TOP-11 Moscow Parks to Visit

I have chosen the best 11 Moscow parks to visit and spend a beautiful time for you. Do not miss and choose one that you like the most – cycling, festivals, flowers, panoramic views and many other things are waiting for you!

Gorky Park (The Central Park of Culture and Leisure) – The main one of the Moscow Parks

In my opinion this park could be called the main park of the city. Why? Because of its huge territory, the central location and the amount of people visiting the park daily.  It was founded in 1928 and in 2011 it was totally reconstructed. Now it pleases visitors with modern objects and soft green lawns.

  • Oktybrskaya or Park Kultuty metro station, Krimsky Val, 9

The Gorky park is a the right choice for everyone! The youth will like a free WiFi, bicycles, skateboards and other rentals; the couples will enjoy spending time near the river, watching a sunset; parents will appreciate colorful playgrounds and a room for mother and child. Everyone can find something for themselves: from yoga classes  to watching movies in a cozy summer cinema, from dance classes to volleyball playground. Gorky Park is also the venue for all kinds of exhibitions, festivals, events for children and adults. During the winter there is one of the biggest skating rinks in the park.

Museon Art Park – A Second Gorky they say

“Museon” is located on the opposite side of Krimsky Val street. And right now some people believe that Gorky and Museon together is a one space sharing the same beauty.

  • Oktybrskaya or Park Kultuty metro station, Krimsky Val, 2

The Park of Arts was named this way because there is the largest composition of open-air sculptures in Russia. In its territory there are already more than 1000 unique exhibits: from monuments of the socialist realism era to various kinds of contemporary art. But this is not all the attractions of the park. In recent years, “Museon” has become an important cultural site of the city. The park regularly hold many different concerts, festivals, educational projects in the field of art and design. There is a Central House of the Artist, a comfortable summer cinema and other attractions on territory. Be sure to stroll pedestrian Crimean embankment, which looks like a modern park.

Neskuchny Garden – True Russian Nature is Here

Neskuchny garden is located on the right bank of the Moscow River. Today it is also seen as a part of the Gorky Park. This landscape park is one of the oldest in the city and is protected by the state. Its name was received from the Neskuchnoye Estate of  Prince Trubetskoi which is still located in the park.

  • Leninsky Prospekt metro station, Leninsky Prospect, 30

This park is famous mostly for its location close to the Gorky park. It is a quite place with true nature, lots of trees and squirrels and also ancient architecture. As in every park, there are sports and playgrounds, cafes and even a football field.

Zaryadye Park – 5 Steps Away From The Red Square

The area of this brand new park was opened only in September 2017 and located in the very heart of Moscow – right near the Red Square.

  • Open from 10AM to 10PM
  • Teatralnaya, Okhotnyi ryad, Ploschad Revolutsii

The park has 4 zones, each of them represent different parts of Russian landscapes. Above the river there is a floating bridge from where you get to see one of the best panoramic views on Moscow. Other attractions of the park are 5D cinema where you can take a flight above Moscow, few cafes and restaurants, pretty lakes with fishes and old preserved churches. In addition there is still being built a  philharmonic hall, covered with a huge dome and an Ice cage where the temperature will always stay below zero degrees.

When you are on the Red Square do not miss it!

All-Russia Exhibition Center (VDNKh) – The Soviet Style Moscow Park

Park VDNKh – one of the most famous parks in Moscow. This park is one of the sights of the city as it hasn’t changed much since the Soviet era.

  • VDNKh metro station, Prospect Mira, 119

The symbol of VDNKh is a fountain with 16 women symbolizing the friendship of the nations of the USSR. Around this fountain there are all the pavilions representing 16 republics. Now inside the pavilions you find various shops, cafes and exhibitions. If you go deep inside the park you will find a rocket Vostok and and an aircraft. What is funny the inside of the aircraft there is actually a photo exhibition. Near the northern entrance you there is a famous sculpture “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman”. It is extremely famous among Russians as all the movies by Mosfilm corporation used to start with the picture of this statue. But if you go further inside the park you will reach a very calm area. A lake is there, forest and birds singing. Since the park occupies a large area I suggest you to rent a bicycle.

Sokolniki Park – A Place For A Hunt Or For Leisure?

The park got its name because of the royal falconry, which took place there in the past when there was a dense forest. (Sokol means a falcon.) In 2011 it was significantly transformed: updated lawns, landscaped ponds and picnic areas, restored summer cinema and theater, a large rose garden, sports grounds, bicycle paths and other things.

  • Sokolniki metro station, Sokolnichesky Val, 1, p. 1

From the main entrance along the alley you can walk to the Sokolniki circle, where 8 alleys form 9 sectors, in each of them you will find trees of the same breed.  The park is famous for its rosary, as well as flower decoration. On the territory of the park there are concert halls, a library, amusement zone, dances zone and many many other attractions. In winter the park has a skating rink (a free of charge one) and ski runs. During the warm season you can rent a bicycle.

Tsaritsino Park – A Different World Inside Moscow

Here you can walk for hours, admiring the most beautiful nature and magnificent architecture.

  • Open from 6AM to 12AM
  • Tsaritsyno metro station, Dolsky, 1

The most amazing part of the park is the lake with a light and musical fountain. Every evening the fountain starts the show. Lights and music combined make you feel like you are not in Moscow but in a fairy tale. The park is also well equipped for sports lovers and healthy lifestyle. There are volleyball and basketball courts, a tennis court, sports facilities for acrobatics, bodybuilding equipment.

What I personally like about this park is the atmosphere. This place is actually far from the city center but I love going there anyway. Whenever I go there I feel like I left Moscow with all its hectic lifestyle. It is the place where I relax, enjoy myself or a company of my friends and feel kind of different. By the way totally suggested for a date!

Kolomenskoye Park – Combination Of Reserve and Architecture

The Kolomenskoye park is actually a Museum-Reserve. It is a former residence of Russian tsars and one of the most scenic places in Moscow.

  • May to September – open from 8AM to 12AM, October to April – from 8AM to 9PM
  • Kolomenskoye metro station, Andropov Ave, 39

Alike with Tsaritsino park Kolomenskoye park has its own special atmosphere with all the architecture, trees, ponds and even a river bank. The park regularly hosts various folk festivals and different fairs. In summer time you can play with kites or rent a bicycle and ride around the huge area of the park.

I love the view that you get on the city from one of the hills near the river. I love the apple trees alleys and the beautiful churches. It is also a bit far from the city center but yet worth going there. One of my best friends even celebrated her wedding there.

Aptekarsky Garden or Botanical garden of the Moscow State University – The Best Botanical Garden in The World

Aptekar in Russian language means a pharmacist so basically it is a pharmacist’s garden. It was founded in 1706 by Peter The Great for growing medicinal plants for the royal family. But later they moved it from under the walls of the Kremlin to the current location.

  • Open from 10AM to 8PM
  • Prospect Mira metro station, Prospekt Mira, 26

In the botanical garden there are no attractions and noisy crowds of tourists. The area of the garden is not as big as any other park in Moscow. And the entrance is not free. But this exactly what makes this park one of the most comfortable in the city. In the Aptekarsky garden they grow thousands of different plants, flowers and trees. Some of the trees are more than 300 years old. They held different festivals there: flowers festivals, sand and ice sculptures expositions.

For me it is one of the most beautiful parks not only in Moscow but in the world. I have never seen so many different flowers and plants anywhere else. And trust me I am a real park lover. And what is more the staff really takes care about every single tree or plant there, some of the trees have names and stories. I love it there and I think the price is really worth what you get.

Victory Park – A Park That Makes Us Remember The War

The park is located on the Poklonnaya Hill and it has one of the world’s largest memorial complexes dedicated to the World War II. The park was opened for the 50th anniversary of the Victory on May 9, 1995. It is also one of the main venues in the city for holding a variety of mass events.

  • Park Pobedy metro station, Brothers Fonchenko, 7

On the main avenue of the park there are with 1418 fountains – exactly as long as the war lasted. Fountains make five water terraces, symbolizing five years of military operations. And in the center of the park there is the Museum of the Great Patriotic War. If you are interested in the history of the war do not miss it. The Poklonnaya Hill is a part of the park and from the hill you get one of the best views on the city of Moscow. And I could say this is the best place for watching the fireworks during the mass celebrations. But be aware it gets too crowded then. As in most of the other big parks you can rent a bicycle or rollers there.

Izmailovsky Park – A Mix of a Big Forest and Attractions

Izmaylovsky Park occupies a huge green territory, making up a large part of the Izmailovo district. The park consists of two parts: Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest and the forest park of Izmailovo. First part is full of attractions and restaurants while the second one is like a real forest with pine trees, birch groves, beautiful clearings and ponds.

  • Izmaylovskaya, Shosse Entuziastov or Partizanskaya metro stations, Izmaylovsky Park

It is easy to spend there a whole day. A large landscaped area and a lot of various entertainments for children and adults will help you not to get bored. An observation wheel, a boat station, children’s playgrounds, a dance floor, sports grounds, a skate park – all this is only a small part of the possible leisure activities. In the park there are bike paths and a rental services.

I don’t go there often to be honest. But the park is very very close whenever to a souvenir market on Partizanskaya metro station. And whenever the weather is nice and I have enough of free time I stroll through the alleys of the park and enjoy the nature. So if you are going to the souvenir market too and you have enough free time then do go to the park too.
