Seasonal jobs: Here are 5 gigs if you want to work during the summer

Gigs for this summer range from seasonal jobs in resorts to part-time positions staffing concerts and events. And, there are some that simply allow you to spend your side gig hours enjoying the sunshine.

Where can you find great gigs for summer 2024?

Seasonal jobs

If you have summers off because you’re a student or a retiree, seasonal jobs can be a great option. They often walk a fine line between work and vacation. Make no mistake. The work is real — and sometimes involves long hours.

But these jobs also involve working in resorts, lodges and national parks, where the settings and free-time options are unique and engaging. Sometimes the nature of the job is too.

Some of the options:

  • Be a “climbing coordinator” or a horse “wrangler” at the Sanborn Western Camps in Colorado.
  • Work as a bartender or barista on Mackinac Island.
  • Act as a wilderness trip leader at Camp Nebagamon in Wisconsin.
  • Join the staff at luxury resorts in Martha’s Vineyard or the Virgin Islands
  • Become an activities director at a resort in Montana

To be sure, many of these positions pay only a little more than minimum wage. But many come with free or discounted housing and meals, as well as access to resort activities. So, while you don’t earn a lot, you have almost no expenses. This makes it easy to save the bulk of the money you earn.

Finding gigs for summer

Both CoolWorks and VegaJobs list seasonal job openings from resorts all over the country. Xanterra Jobs specializes in resorts located in national parks, including Yellowstone, Glacier, Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, Rocky Mountain and Zion.

Finally, SeasonWorkers can help you find jobs in foreign countries. But there’s one caution with this site. SeasonWorkers intersperses listings for paid jobs with internships that the worker pays for. Be sure to carefully scrutinize these listings to make sure they’re paying you, not the other way around.

Event staffing

Summer concert season also boosts demand for event staffing, which can involve watching concerts, comedy shows or plays, while ushering guests to their seats or working in a concession stand.

A site called Qwick helps people with hospitality and event experience find temporary jobs in 20 U.S. cities. These jobs can be as diverse as helping caterers serve at weddings; manning a booth at an auto show or home expo; or taking tickets or serving as an usher at concerts. The one catch: You must have at least a year of relevant experience because there’s no training, nor much time to get up to speed.

Other sites that hire temporary workers for events, include Instawork, Wonolo and BlueCrew.

Offering tours

If you’re an extravert who loves showing people around your town, summer is the perfect time to make some money at it.

Two sites — Viator and ToursByLocals — allow individuals to create tours that they can offer through these sites. You set the agenda, the pricing and the schedule. The sites merely market your tour to interested travelers.

If you’re interested in guiding tours for others, US Ghost Adventures also enlists freelance tour guides to provide ghost tours in more than 60 cities nationwide. Pay is $25 per tour, plus a discretionary $25 bonus, plus tips.

In-person marketing

Two marketing firms enlist freelancers to canvas malls and neighborhoods to hand out literature and discount coupons for local businesses.

Both Field Day and Oppizi pay $15 to $35 per hour, depending on the assignment, and usually enlist freelancers for gigs that take anywhere from three hours to two weeks.

House and pet-sitting

As vacation season revs up, there’s also huge demand for people willing to watch houses and pets while their owners are away.

The best place to advertise your availability for this work is Rover. Rover lets potential house and pet sitters stipulate what kind of pets they’re willing to watch; whether they’ll watch them at your home or their own; and their daily rates. There’s no cost to sign up as a house or pet sitter. But you’ll pay a site commission on your bookings.

The only downside to this site is that there’s plenty of competition. And people with lots of reviews tend to land at the top of the regional search queue. One savvy sitter said he counter-balanced that in his early months on the site by dropping his rates so they were the lowest in his area until he built up dozens of positive reviews. He also printed business cards, with his Rover “address,” and gave them out to travel agents and veterinarians in his area. He now sits for Rover full time and earns a high five-figure income.

How To Get A Job Abroad As A Tour Guide

Becoming a tour guide abroad can be an exciting career. A career that allows you to indulge your love of travel, visit places with strange-sounding names, and soak up the local history and culture. However, if you have your heart set on becoming a tour guide abroad , you may be faced with some challenges.

In this article, we teamed up with experts from job aggregator Jooble to take a closer look at some of the unique challenges associated with finding a job as a tour guide abroad.

The challenges

Working as a tour guide abroad certainly sounds exciting, but at the end of the day, it’s still a job – a job that comes with its own unique set of responsibilities and challenges. Let’s take a look at some of the more obvious challenges faced by tour guides who want to work in a foreign country:

The language barrier:

This might be the biggest challenge for English-speaking tour guides planning on working in non-English-speaking countries in Europe and elsewhere in the world. Communication is obviously a vital part of tour guiding, and language barriers can make it difficult to interact with both tour groups and locals.

Tips on overcoming the language barrier:

  • Language classes : The best way to overcome the language barrier is to learn the language of the country you’re planning to work in. There are many online language courses that allow you to learn at your own pace.
  • Translation apps: If you can’t speak the language, you could use an app such as iTranslate Voice that instantly translates spoken English into the foreign language of your choice. It supports over 40 languages. This could be a useful way to help you communicate with the locals (providing your tour groups speak English).
  • Phrasebooks: Phrasebooks are another handy resource. They contain commonly used phrases in the local language, along with their English translations. You can either use a physical phrasebook or a digital version on your phone.
  • Legal requirements: Tour guides working abroad may need to obtain work permits or visas, which can be complex and time-consuming. Ensure that you have all the necessary paperwork before applying for a job.
  • Irregular hours: Be prepared to work long and often irregular hours, such as day trips to places of interest as well as sightseeing at nighttime.
  • Cultural differences: Every country has its own customs, traditions, and cultural norms. As a foreign tour guide, you should be aware of these and respect the differences.

Marketing strategies

As a candidate aiming for a tour guide position overseas, it’s essential to harness your distinctive skills and experiences through effective  travel agency marketing strategies . Build an attractive online identity by showcasing your deep knowledge of various destinations, multilingual abilities, and unique travel narratives on professional channels like LinkedIn, as well as on a personal blog or website. Participate actively in forums and social media groups connected to travel and tourism to forge connections with future employers and discover new job leads. Tailor your resume and cover letter for every job you apply to, clearly demonstrating how your capabilities align with the job’s demands. Earning certifications in areas like first aid or obtaining a guiding license can further elevate your marketability. With persistence and a focused approach to travel agency marketing, you’ll increase your chances of landing your ideal tour guide role abroad.

Research the Destination

Once you’ve decided on the country you’re planning to work in, learn all you can about the country, its history, culture and customs, and tourist attractions. Read up on the country as much as you can either through travel books and brochures or by doing research online.

Qualifications

Tour guides are required to have some form of certification or training in most countries, and may be required to complete a course or exam as well as be licensed or registered with a local authority.

How To Find Work As A Tour Guide Abroad

Finding a job as a tour guide abroad may be somewhat challenging, but there are various practical ways to go about it. Here are some tips:

·         Contact tour companies directly and inquire about job opportunities. You can find these through online searches and industry publications.

·         If you’re already residing in a foreign country, try connecting with locals, the ex-pat community, or fellow tour guides in the area. They might have inside info on job opportunities.

·         Check job boards such as Jooble as well as websites that cater to the tourism industry. Some job sites specialize in international jobs.

·         Join professional associations and attend tourism industry events to meet travel agents and tour operators.

·         Consider creating and marketing your own tours at home and taking tour groups abroad. This will require a more entrepreneurial mindset but can be a highly rewarding way to turn your job into a rewarding business.

Final thoughts

Working as a tour guide abroad requires a combination of people skills and ingenuity, as well as a passion for travel, history, and culture. However, this type of career means that you can indulge your love of travel and adventure while meeting people from all walks of life – and working in a fun and relaxed setting. Sounds like a dream job, doesn’t it?

Harry Styles' home village searching for experts to run tours for fans

Are you a Cheshire history buff with a passion for Harry Styles trivia? The singer's home village could have just the job for you.

Wednesday 3 April 2024 11:26, UK

job mineur tours

A small Cheshire village is on the hunt for Harry Styles experts to lead tours for fans eager to see where the star grew up.

Holmes Chapel has seen an increase in fans "coming to pay homage" to the singer, according to the community group Holmes Chapel Partnership (HCP).

Now the group is looking for people with a "flair for storytelling" and a "good knowledge" of the village and its links to Styles to lead guided tours.

The new Harry's Home Village Tour will run on Saturday mornings in June and on weekdays in July, August and September.

Last year, the group published a safe walking route for fans to access Twemlow Viaduct, known as "Harry's Wall", after safety concerns about people crossing the busy A535 to get there.

The bridge was reputedly where Styles had his first kiss. In the This Is Us biopic, the singer returned there and scrawled his name on the wall - and hundreds of fans have since added their names.

But HCP includes a warning on its map telling fans the viaduct is a listed structure and defacing it with graffiti is a criminal offence.

Other spots on the tour will include Mandeville's Bakery, where Styles had a Saturday job before entering X Factor, and Fortune City Restaurant, where he once took Taylor Swift.

Fans will be able to take photos of themselves with the lifesize cardboard cutout of Styles that has a home in the bakery.

HCP is yet to reveal further details about how the tours will work and what they will cost fans to attend.

But the job advert promises flexible working hours and "competitive remuneration".

career tours small

I was just amazed of all the computer science is used to get a package from order to ship...I know a lot of people say that computers are putting people out of jobs, but this tour shows young people that is not true. It helped them to understand the jobs might look different, because humans have to be behind all the technology.
“I struggle to find STEM resources that are actually interesting to kids, that they might connect with and set a goal. I want to motivate them to graduate and have a career because we have a low graduation rate, and I think this tour could be part of a program that leads to that.”
The video was very helpful, informational, and entertaining and I loved learning about how the packages are shipped.
I loved this experience! The videos were descriptive but not too heavy on technical terms, so my students were able to understand without issues. The addition of Kahoot trivia was genius! It kept my students so engaged, and we all learned a ton about Amazon! I also love the added teaching tool- the note catchers!
It was really entertaining actually - I didn’t realize how high tech everything was. My favorite part was the workers actually telling us about themselves it really shows how they are people just like us that we can one day become.
The students absolutely loved this tour! [They] really liked pretending to ride along on the conveyor belts. After, students kept discussing the tour and how much they enjoyed the experience. As a teacher, I appreciate how easy it was to prepare for the lesson.
My kids said things such as “This is so fun!,” “Can we do this more?,” and “I am learning so much! I did not know that!” They had such a great time working together, laughing, communicating, talking with one another and the teachers...The presenters were amazing! It was very engaging and well made!
It was wonderful that you included both students and STEM professionals to make the experience both relatable and inspiring...[There] was so much new vocabulary that was introduced but explained in a way that the students could grasp it. The Alexa technology really got their attention because they use it in many of their homes.

Holmes Chapel to hold day of auditions for tour guides after thousands of fans make pilgrimage to Cheshire village

A Cheshire village that has been swamped by young visitors has appealed for tour guides with a very specific skill set: an expert knowledge of Harry Styles .

More than 5,000 fans – known as Harries – have descended on the quaint community of Holmes Chapel in the last year in a pop pilgrimage to the singer’s home town.

Some were said to be “risking life and limb” to visit the site of Styles’s first kiss, a railway viaduct near a notoriously busy main road, prompting villagers to publish a self-guided tour map last year.

Now local people have decided to go one step further. The Holmes Chapel Partnership, a community group, has announced that it is launching its own official tours and is looking for Styles superfans to lead them.

The demand for the coveted roles is expected to be so great that the village will host an audition day later this month, presumably in the style of The X Factor on which Styles rose to fame.

Peter Whiers, the group’s chair, said they hoped to hire Harries aged over 16, but that “more senior individuals may also apply”.

Whiers said the influx of Harries from across the world had led to a business boom in Holmes Chapel, including at the bakery where Styles worked part-time before finding fame with One Direction.

The store, W Mandeville’s, has a lifesize cardboard placard of their most famous ex-employee holding a white loaf – which, predictably, has become its bestselling item.

The tour will also take in Styles’s former schools, the terraced cottage where he grew up, and the nearby Chinese restaurant where he once took Taylor Swift.

But the biggest draw is Twemlow Viaduct, an otherwise unremarkable railway bridge where Styles reputedly had his first kiss.

The structure – known to fans as “Harry’s Wall” – is also where Styles scrawled his name during a biopic released in 2013.

Since then fans from as far afield as Australia, the US and Mexico have travelled to the usually muddy field in south Cheshire to write their name alongside their idol.

The Holmes Chapel Partnership warned last year that fans were “risking life and limb” by crossing a busy main road to get to Harry’s Wall, as they released a safety-approved map for intrepid visitors.

Whiers said they were expecting “significant” demand for the new tours, which are expected to begin in June and run until September. He added: “Even during the wet winter months, Harries have continued to visit, braving muddy banks and wet fields to pay homage at Harry’s Wall.”

Youngstown students tour the past.

job mineur tours

Correspondent photo / Sean Barron Janice Kelsey, a longtime educator in the Birmingham, Alabama, school district, speaks to a group of Youngstown students Tuesday about her experiences in the 1963 Children’s March to desegregate the city, on the students’ first day of the annual Sojourn to the Past civil rights journey through the South.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — They may be several generations apart, but Lily Snider and Janice Kelsey share a desire to continue healing from emotional pain while using their stories — partly in a therapeutic manner — to reach others.

“My biggest takeaway will be to know that there are consequences no matter what you do, so you might as well make a change,” Snider, a Chaney High School sophomore, said.

Such a message was the product of having heard a one-hour presentation Tuesday from Kelsey, of Birmingham, who shared her experiences, pain and triumphs from having been a civil rights activist. More specifically, Kelsey was part of the city’s May 1963 Children’s March aimed at tackling segregation in Alabama’s largest city.

Kelsey shared her story with Snider, who has struggled with and is healing from mental health challenges, and several other Youngstown area high school students and adults on the first day of an eight-day Sojourn to the Past traveling American history journey to key civil rights sites in the South.

The Youngstown contingent joined several dozen other high school students and adults from the San Francisco Bay area and will return home late Wednesday.

Initially, Kelsey, a former science teacher, guidance counselor and principal in the Birmingham School District, didn’t have a vested interest in being part of the civil rights movement. After receiving permission from her mother to attend Monday evening mass meetings, however, and hearing the Rev. James Bevel of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Kelsey, who attended the all-black Ullman High School, began to realize that she had been treated unfairly all along.

“That was my first reality check. I thought, ‘That isn’t fair,'” she said.

Specifically, Bevel had pointed out to her and other young people that Ullman High had one electric typewriter, whereas the all-white Phillips High School had three rooms filled with the machines. Bevel also told them that Ullman HIgh’s sports teams’ uniform colors were mismatched because they were hand-me-down articles of clothing.

Perhaps the most significant piece of information that carried the greatest sting for Kelsey was when Bevel mentioned that in one of the downtown store’s lunch counters, blacks who ordered a 27-cent hot dog and soda had to stand while white patrons got to sit on comfortable leather chairs to enjoy their meals, even though whites paid the same price.

“Bevel painted a picture that said, ‘I’ve been mistreated,'” she said.

On May 2, 1963, the 16-year-old Kelsey “woke up with my mind on freedom,” and joined thousands of children who converged on the 16th Street Baptist Church to assemble for a massive protest after having been groomed in the principles of nonviolence. Before the children were let out of the church 50 at a time to head across the street to Kelly Ingram Park, Shelley “The Playboy” Stewart, a disc jockey on WENN-AM radio, excitedly told his listening audience, “There’s going to be a party in the park!” — coded language to tell the young people the march was about to get underway without the knowledge of the police.

Soon after, Kelsey was among the nearly 1,000 young people arrested on a charge of marching without a valid permit and taken to the Jefferson County jail to be fingerprinted and have her mugshot taken. She also spent three days jailed at the county fairgrounds before her parents took her home, Kelsey said, adding that the arrestees were instructed to provide their names and ages only, not their parents’ names or addresses for fear of negative repercussions.

Kelsey recalled having been in church Sept. 15, 1963, when the minister interrupted the service to announce that the 16th Street Baptist Church had been bombed, resulting in the deaths of Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Denise McNair and Carole Robertson, and the severe injury to Addie Mae’s sister, Sarah Collins. At first, Kelsey figured it was another typical bombing; Birmingham had an area infamously known as “Dynamite Hill,” where the Ku Klux Klan bombed the homes of many black doctors, lawyers and others.

Kelsey, whose maiden name was Wesley but was not related to Cynthia Wesley, was devastated nonetheless because they had gotten to know each other well, Kelsey remembered.

The terrorist attack on the church was so devastating to Kelsey that she was unable to talk about it for more than 20 years.

The Children’s March resulted in segregated signage being removed from many downtown businesses, and got the attention of President John F. Kennedy, who proposed the Civil Rights Act of 1963, she noted.

Kelsey said she hopes that perhaps the biggest lesson the students and adults will glean from her experiences is that they don’t have to be part of a major movement to bring about positive social change. Instead, they are equipped with the inherent power to use their own voices, hearts and minds.

“You have a role to play and a responsibility to play your role,” she said.

Likewise, Snider feels more comfortable being open about sharing her challenges for the purpose of helping others, she added.
