Travel is for everyone and with growing movements to make travel more inclusive like #fatgirlstraveling and #plussizetraveltoo, there is no better time to shrug off your worries and take that trip you’ve always dreamt of. 

So, off the back off my most recent 7-month trip around Africa, Asia and the United States, here are my top tips for finding your stress free travel wardrobe as a plus-sized woman. 

Two Points, Before We Start:

1. Larger clothes = more material

There is no escaping the fact that larger clothes take up more room, and that means taking fewer items. ‘Multi-purpose’ is the name of the game here ladies. 

2. It’s not impossible to buy plus size clothes all over the world, but it’s not always easy.

News Flash: Fat people exist in every country! But not every country has easily accessible plus size clothing stores, so it’s worth spending the time to properly plan what you pack so you don’t get caught short. 

Get the Foundations Right

(if you only have time to read one section of this article, make it this one) .

The three following items are the holy trinity of plus-size travel packing , I promise you, they could make or break your trip. 

The Unmentionables  

Underwear , love it or loathe it, just don’t skip over thinking about it when you’re planning what to pack. 

Having the wrong underwear that makes you feel uncomfortable, like bras that chafe in hot weather or knickers that don’t stay up when you move around, will totally distract you from living your best vacation life. 

Hands up if you swell up in hot weather like me? Breathable and moister-wicking undies will be your best friend for comfort, keeping cool, and tp help to prevent skin irritations that occur in warm & wet environments. 

Chub Rub  

Traveling usually means moving your body more, and moving your body more can lead to chafing, ranging from the uncomfortable to the downright painful, especially in tropical climates that are hot and humid. 

Luckily, there are a lot of precautions you can take to prevent chub rub from ruining your trip. 

Applying anti-chafing creams, baby powder and even deodorant to potentially affected areas will help but for the dreaded thigh rub, I opt for wearing some thin cotton biker-style shorts under skirts and dresses. Find a colour that best matches your skin tone if you’re self-conscious about them showing (but don’t worry, my shorts have been the envy of my fellow every-size travelers all over the world!) 

Shoes, Glorious Shoes  

We’ve established that travel usually means more movement and more movement means more work for your feet. Take it from a fat girl who didn’t pack properly supporting shoes and spent months recovering from painful Plantar Fasciitis, shoes are important! 

Hiking sandals are now my go-to travel shoe. They offer great support, are often water-friendly (for all that island hopping you’ll be doing) and will take you on just about any terrain. All this, as well as being lightweight and allowing your feet to breathe. There are even brands like Chaco and Teva that are mixing all this high-tech with style, so there’s no excuse to be walking around in flip-flops . 

Before You Pack: 

Buying plus size clothing is tricky at the best of times, add travel, new activities and unfamiliar climates into the mix and it can feel overwhelming. Take a little time to plan out what you need, what you already have that’ll do the job and decide if there are any pieces you need to pick up. 

Here’s my fool-proof checklist: 

Double and triple check the climate of the places you’re visiting, this is easier when it’s one or two places but bear in mind that the same country can have multiple climates. For example, when I visited Jordan last Spring, the capital, Amman, was a chilly 6C but just 2 hours away, at the Dead Sea, it was a steamy 30C! 

Plan out all the activities you definitely want to do, as well as those you’d like to try out, so you can pack for them. This can be everything from a fancy dinner and sightseeing to a snorkelling trip or hiking! This will help you to realistically plan how many ‘specialist’ outfits you’ll need. 

Length of Time

Plan out no more than one week of outfits! One of the BIGGEST mistakes travellers make is overpacking. In reality, you will wear everything a couple of times and if you’re going away for longer than a week or so, you’ll want to do laundry.  

Check Out Local Customs

Sometimes you have to cover up your shoulders, knees and hair, or take off your shoes in order to be respectful of local religions and customs. Make sure you know ahead of time what to expect so there are no tricky moments.

A friend and I visited a beautiful old Mosque in Kuala Lumpur this year. I had researched and knew that I’d be required to cover up, my friend who was wearing shorts, was asked to wear a one-size-fits-all cover-up upon arrival but as I was dressed appropriately, I didn’t have to worry about fitting into it! 

Plus Sized Travel Clothes Brands

It’s one thing to bite the bullet and promise yourself that on this vacation you’re going to hike to a waterfall, but it’s another thing entirely to make sure you have the right clothing. Here is a collection of my tried and tested plus-size inclusive clothing brands. 

For Activewear

Fabletics is my go-to for cute & inclusive activewear, whether that’s for hiking, yoga or travel days (yes, I’m a yoga pants 24/7 kind of girl).

As of January 2020, their size range will go up to a US size 22-24 (4X) making it one of the most inclusive sportswear brands out there. 

I’ve mentioned them before, but they’re so good they get a second shout out, Chaco and Teva are two brands you HAVE to check out for supportive vacation footwear. Both brands stock wider widths too. 

For Swimwear

With the inclusion of lines by plus size style icons Gabi Fresh & Ashley Graham, as well as sizes ranging from US 4 – 32, SwimsuitsForAll is the place to find that fatkini to help you take your vacation by storm. 

For Everything Else

ASOS Curve , a personal favourite of mine, goes up to a US size 26 (5X) and is a one-stop-shop for everything from panties to evening gowns (I’m not kidding). Other store options I can recommend include Boohoo , SheIn & Old Navy. 

Plus Sized Travel Clothing: What to Pack

Lightweight, breathable, quick-drying and wrinkle-free materials.

These fabrics are your best friends, especially when shopping for plus size tropical vacation clothes! 

Rayon & Polyester get a bad rap but in my experience are cool, durable and extremely suitcase friendly (read: make great plus size, wrinkle-free travel clothing, nobody likes ironing!) 

But what about cotton, I hear you ask? While cotton is comfortable and breathable making it one of the best hot-weather materials, it creases like nobody’s business and can be weighed down by the moisture it absorbs, so if you love cotton, opt for a cotton-polyester blend for the best of both worlds. 

Multi-Purpose Items

To help you save on space (remember, with larger clothes = fewer options) pack items that do double duty.  

Sarongs are amazing multi-purpose space savers, great for everything from beach coverups & beach towels to an extra layer on a cool flight, a headscarf to keep the sun off your scalp and a way of covering your shoulders & knees at religious sights. 

Day-to-night clothing is a must. Prioritize pieces that can be dressed up or down easily with a few accessories – a simple dress in the day paired with your newly purchased hiking sandals can turn into a party dress by night by adding a long necklace, some lipstick and your designated pair of ‘night-time’ sandals. 

Make the Most of Your Airport Outfit

Deciding on your plus size airport outfit can be tricky, but here are my tips! 

Comfort over everything! I usually opt for my leggings and an oversized tunic or sweatshirt. Dressing smartly will not get you a free upgrade, but might make you uncomfortable. 

If you’re traveling to more than one destination, don’t wear your heaviest/bulkiest clothing – I know, I know, you think I’m crazy for saying that! But hear me out – that clothing has to fit in your bag at some point, right? I made the terrible mistake of flying from the UK in the winter wearing my jeans and sweatshirt and arriving in Egypt to 25C+ heat. I never wore my jeans again on the 7-month long trip and they became a huge burden because they just didn’t fit in my bag!

Pack for Comfort, Whatever That Means to You

I love dresses. I live in dresses, sleep in dresses, hell, I even hike in dresses. So when I listened to all the people telling me to take trousers on my latest and longest round-the-world-trip, I should’ve known it was a terrible idea. I ended up mailing my trousers home and searching high and low for shops that stocked my size so I could buy more dresses. Moral of the story? You know what clothes make you most comfortable, so pack those. 

You’ll be stuck with those clothes for the rest of your trip so this is not the time to experiment! 

Above All Else, Pack for Confidence!

The Best Travel Clothes for Curvy Women

Ok ladies, let’s talk travel wear. The strappy dresses, string bikinis, and pretty convertible tops that seem to be featured on every packing list, round-up, and Instagram feed. Yes, they are adorable. And I’m sure they look amazing on many women. However, as a curvy girl who is often caught between regular and plus sizes, I regularly find that these ‘perfect travel clothes’ really aren’t the best travel clothes for curvy women.

More often or not, when I look at these ‘must have’ lists  I end up mentally knocking off half the items because they won’t look good on my figure. Only to find out that those that I think might actually work on my body come in limited sizes. It’s a pain in the butt. Just because I’m curvy doesn’t mean I don’t want pretty clothes. I deserve to feel good in a swimsuit. I want to look cute in my photos. And I know I’m not the only one feeling left out when it comes to travel fashion, but the fact is that plus size travel clothing is hard to find.

Thankfully there are some brilliant brands that recognize that women of all shapes and sizes like to travel and look good while doing it. So from one curvy traveller to another, here are my recommendations for the best travel clothes for curvy women.

Best Convertible Travel Wear for Curvy Women

Convertible clothing and capsule wardrobes are perfect for travel, especially since airlines are getting so strict with luggage. And while many brands offer these types of designs, most of them target those with slimmer figures who are willing to show more skin. Personally, that’s not my style, which is why I love the chic and elegant designs from Diane Kroe.

Diane Kroe offers a range of items from shirts to dresses to pants, all of which can be worn multiple ways. My first two Diane Kroe pieces were the  Origami Top (above) and the Carry On Cozy , both of which I love. Both pieces transformed into multiple looks as tops and dresses. They washed and wore well, and were very obviously a quality make. Plus, I loved how they looked and felt on. Best Casual Travel Essentials for Curvy Women

If you have been following me for a while and paid attention to my photos you might have noticed that, for the past few years, I have worn the same black t-shirt on every single trip I take. It’s the encircled Evolve Top and it’s easily my favourite t-shirt. The sleeves are adjustable to give it different looks, it’s a bit dressier than a normal t-shirt, and it washes and wears SO well. 

I have also recently fallen in love with their Dressy Sweatpant pants which are cuter than leggings but as comfortable as PJs and can be dressed up for down. I have also declared them the ultimate airplane pants because they are super comfortable, cute, and, while not thick, provide a bit of warmth. And yes, they have pockets! Best Dresses for Curvy Bodies

While I used to be a tomboy as a child, I am now 100% a dress girl. Part of it is because I think they are so pretty, part of it is because it is so easy, and part of it is because I found a brand that has a huge collection of styles and colours that fit my body really well. The brand is  City Chic and I have a closet full of their dresses right now.

City Chic has stores in the USA and Australia but does offer shipping abroad. As a Canadian, I can sometimes find their products at The Bay, but the best selection by far is online on the official City Chic website. They have dresses for every occasion and in a variety of styles so whether you want something loose and flowy or tight to hug your curves, you’ll find options here. City Chic is made for mid and plus size women so their sizing goes from size 12 (XXS) t0 24 (XXL). 

Another cute place for size inclusive dresses (xs-4x) is Cherry Velvet . This brand is Canadian and create vintage, pin-up style pieces that are super cute and can be fun to travel with as well (although you might need to iron them before wearing!). 

Best Jeans for Curvy Women

I hate buying jeans. I have thick thighs and a big butt and a smaller waist and nothing ever seems to fit properly. However, on suggestion from some friends I finally tried American Eagle curvy jeans and immediately bought three pairs. These are the only jeans I have found (so far) that actually work for my body. They have all kinds of styles but, being a millennial (who also lives in Canada where you want to be able to tuck your pants into winter boots) I’m partial to the skinny jean. The Ne(x)t level ones are super stretchy and comfortable. Recently I’m also loving the wide leg dreamy drop styles which are super soft and actually comfortable. American Eagle offers sizes up to 24 and a variety of inseam lengths. 

Best Leggings for Curvy Women

Like jeans, I struggled to find leggings that fit me well. Again, the whole smaller waist and bigger bottom led to lots of fit problems. Usually, waist bands sliding down which meant every time I hiked/walked/worked out I would have to stop to pull up my pants. I tried all kinds of brands and styles before landing on one very specific pair from lululemon: The Wunder Train tights. They don’t fall down and they aren’t see through and I cannot recommend them enough. Lululemon currently carries up to a size 20 but keep in mind the fit on their leggings is very different than jean size. I wear 18 jeans and 12 in these lululemon leggings, so keep that in mind when figuring out sizing! 

Best Travel Swimsuits for Curvy Women

Swimsuits and wetsuits have been one of my biggest pet peeves as a water love and scuba diver. Especially when, on top of travel, I live on a lake at home in Canada during the summer months. Best Travel Outwear for Plus Size Women

Outerwear can be another pain in the butt to buy, but being Canadian I have to have several different coats for the different seasons. I’ve bought coats from plenty of brands throughout the years, but when it comes to keeping warm or dry, my favourite brand is Columbia.

I currently have two Columbia jackets; a warm winter one perfect for those -40C days (yes, I said -40C. Welcome to Canada) and a lightweight waterproof rain coat. The raincoat is perfect for travel because it folds up into its own pocket, is lightweight, breathable, and most importantly: it is waterproof.

Best Anti-Theft Pieces for Curvy Women

As a solo female traveller, I think that Clever Travel Companion is one of the coolest clothing lines out there. Not sure what you mean? I just checked them all and the only thing currently unavailable is the Lululemon leggings I recommend. I’ve been keeping an eye on them since Christmas and I’m not sure if they are just out of stock or being discontinued. I have ordered a new style to try and it should be coming next week- will share if I love them. But everything else I’ve listed is available.

How do you find the Cherry Velvet dresses, in terms of wrinkling? I have four or five of them, but hadn’t really thought about taking them travelling, as I thought that they’d just wrinkle up, and I usually stay in hostels that don’t have irons readily available!!

I am starting to love SweetLegs — I just wish that they were a natural fibre, as I usually try to avoid the synthetics in the crotch area, especially in the hot sweaty summer! But I definitely ordered a bunch today with their 20% off sale this weekend:)

I find if I hang my cherry velvet dresses over a door or in a closet it helps get the wrinkles out. Can also hang it in the bathroom when you shower- the steam will help 🙂

I love Eddie Bauer’s Girl on the Go insulated trench. It stands up to all sorts of weather. I’ve worn it in pouring rain in summer without the lining and stayed dry, and in the snow and wind in winter with the lining and have stayed warm. It’s low profile enough for city travel.

One of my favorite travel pieces is the Columbia Pardon My Trench. It’s a belted jacket with trench detailing and a hood and zip up pockets. It’s sleek enough to work in a city but sturdy enough for light hiking, trekking. And it fold up very small. Runs up to 3X.

Thanks for these ideas. One cmpany I like for clothing is Blue Sky. Available online or in person in BC, this company makes bamboo clothing in real people sizes. I especially like their skort which is knee length with pockets. It can be dressed up or down. My travel wardrobe is almost 100% Blue Sky.

Please expand to include those of us above 24/3X. I’m glad the industry is starting to be more inclusive, but apparently they think travel and life stops at size 22/24. It’s even worse if you happen to be short (like me) or tall.

Some brands on this list to go to larger sizes but, agree, the sad fact is a lot of brands don’t. I continue to update this list as I can to be inclusive but I also focus on highlighting brands that I know and use and trust. I don’t just list random brands because they offer certain sizes.

Looking for lightweight dresses. Love some of the ones you wear. But have been bitten with shipping to Canada. When you order to Canada and have delivered by DHL do you get a charge from them to clear customs plus the customs cost? When I looked it up, it looked like a 13% customs fee. Worth shipping to Canada if on sale?

yes the shipping and duty can be brutal. I try to keep anything purchased from abroad under $100 to avoid the duty fees!

Hi, I’ve been reading a lot of information about good travel wear for curvy, larger ladies and one thing I’m having trouble finding is anyone discussing good bras for those skinny strap dresses and tops. I would love someone to give me some insight.

I live in Alberta, Canada so it would helpful to have some information on bras I can purchase in Canadian funds. Thank you.

My go to is Dessee brand (Penningtons carries them). They have a convertible bra that works really well for me. I usually go strapless under my thin-strapped dresses.

The Best Wrinkle-Free Women’s Clothes for Travel, According to Frequent Fliers

You’ve tried packing cubes and rolling your shirts up Marie Kondo –style and yet, most likely, all your clothes still come out of your suitcase wrinkled when you reach your destination. Or maybe you have an important meeting right after landing , and your once-polished outfit looks rumpled after hours in economy . Like other travel dilemmas — finding a bag that’ll fit under the seat in front of you or trying to sleep on a transcontinental flight — arriving with a suitcase full of wrinkly clothes can be solved. To avoid pricey hotel dry-cleaning services, or risky sessions with your in-room ironing board, we asked nine women in the travel business to recommend the best pieces to wear and pack while you’re away.

Best wrinkle-free pants for travel

For travel pants that are comfortable, stylish and low-maintenance, Jeralyn Gerba, co-founder and editorial director of Fathom , likes easy pieces from Eileen Fisher . “She’s known for researching and developing materials that are responsible, sustainable, and high-performance while also being crazy chic,” says Gerba. “I love her uncrushable Tencel, a tree fiber textile produced with near zero waste — the drawstring pants and blazers look really good after long-haul flights.” The adjustable drawstring allows for in-flight comfort while the textured crepe lends them a sophisticated look.

A similar pair at a lower price point, these slim, drawstring pants are a favorite of Sarah Corsa, a trip designer at Journy . She likes that they’re “lightweight and rarely wrinkle.” Gerba also looks to Athleta for “casual basics with the occasional flair,” and says their athleisure pieces offer “a nice alternative to the straight-up sweats uniform” while traveling.

Outdoor Voices, makers of our favorite “sleek and tailored” sweatpants, are another frequent flier go-to for easy-to-wear pieces that’ll look fresh after a long journey. Journy co-founder Leiti Hsu, calls the RekTrek pants “the ultimate in comfort.” She says they “stay crisp from laundry cycle to laundry cycle” and “look way more pulled-together than yoga pants.”

“I have a few pairs of stretchy but tailored trousers from The Row that are incredibly comfortable and easy to pack,” says Jen Rubio, co-founder and chief-brand officer of Away . They’ll give an outfit more polish than a jogger-type pant while still being wrinkle-resistant and non-constricting on long flights. Rubio says she’ll pair hers with a T-shirt and leather jacket.

Based in San Francisco, the clothing start-up Betabrand sells pieces based on crowd-sourced designs, like these trouser-style pants that come highly recommended by Larissa Hayden, deputy director of events at Atlas Obscura . She likes that they’re crafted “with comfort, durability, and professionalism in mind,” and have all the comfort of stretchy sweats.

Best wrinkle-free leggings for travel

If you’d rather go the leggings route, Melissa Hie of Girl Eat World swears these jeggings “look exactly like jeans but are very stretchy and comfortable like leggings.” She says, “I would just pair this with a comfortable button-up shirt if I need to look somewhat put together straight off the plane.”

For leggings that can be dressed up, Hsu likes this expensive-looking (but actually quite affordable) faux -leather pair. “Tuck them in your carry-on for a sexy go-to that [can go from] day to dinner in any city,” she says. “They’re secretly lined with cozy fleece on the inside; all the better to brave your next winter dining adventure.”

Best wrinkle-free tops for travel

Travelers love Uniqlo’s affordable and durable pieces for comfort and style. Hie says their button-downs are perfect for wearing with leggings to easily look put-together. And while she normally prefers natural fabrics, when it comes to travel she says, “I go with polyester-blend fabrics since they don’t wrinkle as much.” Like polyester, rayon is far more wrinkle-resistant than cotton or linen.

Also polyester, but with a silky feel and sweet ruffle details, this packable top is one of Corsa’s favorites. “It can be worn in basically any climate, for tons of occasions,” she says. “It never wrinkles and still looks new after years.”

Gerba calls Uniqlo’s warming Heattech turtleneck, an essential layering piece for cold-weather travel or even ice-cold planes, “basic, but solid.” In warmer climates, Stephanie Park, co-founder and vice-president of operations at Journy, likes the brand’s AIRism line. “Not only do the breathable base layers release heat and moisture to adapt to different weather conditions, but they also remain remarkably wrinkle-free, even after long flights,” she says.

According to Rubio, Theory’s “crepe knits will never wrinkle, no matter how much of an overpacker you are,” which is good news if you need to look professional right after a red-eye flight.

Best wrinkle-free dresses for travel

Simple, packable slip dresses were called out by several travelers as highly versatile items. Hie opts for colorful ones from Singapore-based, women-founded brand Love, Bonito. “They are made out of a polyester blend and [don’t] t get wrinkled even if they are straight out of the suitcase,” she says. “I love them because they are very basic, which means I can pair them with accessories to dress them up or down.”

Rubio counts her black Nili Lotan slip dress as ones of her perfect travel pieces that’s “practical and comfortable, yet stylish and versatile so that my look can easily transition from day to night.” She’ll wear it with a blazer and loafers on the plane, and switch to boots once she lands. And while it may seem like a fussy pick, Gerba says she frequently packs silk because “it looks good, weighs nothing, and its wrinkles fall out easily.”

For a fraction of the price, Journy trip designer Lauren Witte likes this bright Everlane wrap dress which, she says, is also “made out of wrinkle-resistant fabric,” and can work for both casual and dressier events.

If slip dresses aren’t your style, Hsu says she’s “obsessed with Wolford’s selection of stretchy dresses that roll up almost as tiny as hosiery.” Since it takes up barely any space she says they’re the ideal “just-in-case” dresses to pack if the need to dress up arises, and she calls her simple, black sheath “a lifesaver.”

Best wrinkle-free layers for travel

Like the Eileen Fisher pants recommended by Gerba, this blazer is made of Tencel and can withstand long flights and not-so-tidy packing. Plus, as several of our travel pros noted, blazers play well with basics like lightweight tops and cami dresses, giving you some mix-and-match outfits for your journey without having to overpack.

“A black versatile cashmere wrap is a must-have for my busy travel schedule,” says Elizabeth Fuller, director of marketing and partnerships at Black Tomato . “It doubles as a blanket on a chilly flight and won’t wrinkle if you stow it in your carry on to go through security.” She likes the very elegant. fringed Loro Piano version, but if you’re on a budget, the under-$100 silk-blended wrap from cashmere startup Naadam will also do the trick.

Like Fuller, Hsu thinks quality cashmere is a worthwhile travel investment. “Compared with other fabrics, cashmere doesn’t require washing all that often and is naturally temperature moderating,” she says, making it a natural fit for an on-the-go lifestyle. Her favorites are classic cuts with unique details from brands like Reformation and Rag & Bone .

General plus-size travel fashion resources.

As a plus-size woman looking for crucial gear for my own long-term travels , I’ve found that good plus-size travel clothes are few and far between . Most versatile women’s gear, like convertible dresses or shirts, only work for people that are very thin, and many plus-size options, when you can find them at all, are designed for the retired cruising set, and not necessarily for backpackers .

Travelers come in all shapes and sizes, and I want to empower my fellow plus-size travelers to find what they need for their own adventures, whatever they may be. Over a few posts here on HPL, I’ll be highlighting different types of plus-size travel gear, starting, in this post, with good resources for cute plus-size clothes that won’t break the bank, and will help you look great while globetrotting!

In a good plus-size retailer, I look for the following qualities:

1. High-quality materials/construction: A lot of widely-available plus-size clothing is made of cheap, shoddy materials (Forever 21 comes to mind), so I mostly strive to buy higher-quality or better-constructed clothes whenever possible.

2. Tailoring for plus-sized people: Though many stores have a ‘plus-size’ section of some kind (though often small and dismal) the section is often a bit half-baked. Many just take clothes for straight-size people and then just make a larger version, with the same proportions. This doesn’t work very well for plus-size bodies, as weight distribution can be quite different. There are many retailers that have clothing that is specifically made for plus-sized people, instead of just adding the size as an afterthought.

3. Cute, trendy clothes: OK, this one’s kind of a gimme, as pretty much everyone looks for cute, trendy clothes no matter their size. However, it’s pretty difficult to find cool clothes in plus sizes. Though it now seems that many retailers are figuring out that people over a size US14 want to spend their money on cool clothes (shocker right?), many still only carry two kinds of plus-size clothing. Loud, big-patterned mumu-type clothing, or stuff with cherries printed on it (pseudo-rockabilly style). And while there’s nothing wrong with being into this type of clothing, variety of options is much appreciated.

Here are a few of my favorite plus-size retailers:

ASOS : ASOS is a UK-based online retailer and center of my plus-size clothing universe. Their clothes are not necessarily cheap, but are well-made and last a very long time–I’m still wearing clothes from when I started buying from ASOS, over two years ago. They also have sales pretty often, so it’s worth checking the site regularly. The number one, A+, super thumbs up, best thing about ASOS, especially for travelers, is that they offer FREE shipping and return shipping anywhere in the world with a purchase over USD$30. Clothes are generally true to size.

H&M Plus : H&M’s plus-size section is limited, but steadily growing. There’s not a lot of variety, but it’s a good site to get decent-quality basics at reasonable prices. H&M is great for those whose travel wardrobes have a color palette centered on dark or neutral colors. The tanks and shirts are especially good, but they also have the occasional cute dress or skirt. Note that their sizes run a little small.

Target : Target is on the cheaper side of things, and really great for basics, especially maxi dresses , cardigans, and dresses with shoulders and knees covered (great to wear when visiting churches ). Clothes generally run true to size.

Levi’s : For light-packing advocates, jeans are definitely considered a “luxury” item, but for some women, jeans are a must-have outfit staple that simply cannot be left behind. The debate has gone on for ages . If you’re going to weigh down your bag with a pair of jeans, they should at least be of good quality. Levi’s has real denim jeans (none of that weird stretchy business) up to a size 24. They also have high-quality jeggings, if that’s your cup of tea. Since Levi’s are made of denim, they will take foreeeeeeeever to dry, but denim also doesn’t require very frequent laundering. Levi’s sizing is pretty consistent…as consistent as you can get in women’s jeans, anyway.

ModCloth : Though they tend to be on the pricier side, Modcloth is very consistently cute, well-constructed, and has a variety of types of clothes in plus sizes. They mostly have dresses , and may be a good place to find your one “dress-up or dress-down” dress that you pack, like a maxi dress, or a “ little black dress ”. They do have a decent variety of sweaters, skirts, underwear , and nicer tops. They also have a great collection of bathing suits. This may be a bit expensive for the average budget backpacker, but if you have a ‘dress-up’ occasion to pack for, this is a great place to start.

If I can add to your list of clothing retailers, SWAK Designs makes high-quality basics. They’re pretty expensive unless you wait for a sale, but I’ve found that their clothes are long-lasting and generally worth it. Their skirts and dresses in particular are items I could see myself traveling with. And as a bonus, they go up to a 6x in most items.

I loooove ASOS, especially the free shipping and returns bit! Gap also carries up to a size 20 in store, and their bootcut jeans are also excellent–I took a pair on my last trip and wore it a least a week before washing each time, so that’s totally worth it to me.

Im so happy you posted this very helpful! And i can’t wait for the bath suits ones!! Im in between regular and plus size so I find things are to small or to big its a real pain! But I’m starting to buy more things slowly because in July I’m starting my travels so I need more clothing lol

I’m kinda on the border between straight and plus size too! How annoying is that? Like I loooove H&M, and I like that they have a plus size section now yet I find that their biggest straight size is a bit snug for me but their smallest plus is a little too loose….. so annoying!That was as of a couple months ago though, and I’ve lost about 8 lbs since then so I’m kinda hoping that the biggest straight size will fit me now LOL

Being between sizes is totally frustrating. I’d definitely recommend trying ASOS. The free return shipping helps for being able to try a bunch of stuff and send back what doesn’t work without too much hassle, and the sizing is pretty consistent, so once you find the right size, it will fit almost every time!

Oh, wow! Just what I wanted to see as a next topic here! Planning a trip to the US in late summer (with hubs) and I’m having hard time finding travel savvy stuff for plus-size me.

I do wish that Modcloth had a EU base as well. I love so much of what they sell. But ordering from outside the EU means you pay a hefty amount of tax etc on the purchase and postage. Ugh!

Oh no! Maybe if you’re going to be at one hotel for a while you might be able to have a package delivered there and pay for overnight shipping? There are a fair number of good in-store plus-size options, especially at big-box stores like Target and JC Penney. Nordstrom as well on the higher-end of things, if there’s one near where you will be. Have a great trip! 🙂

For budget travellers, I recommend Old Navy’s plus size section. Their stuff is cheap enough to be able to throw it away after awhile. I would not recommend wearing it in extremely hot weather, as the cotton from the shirts WILL rub off on you. However, their shirts are soft, comfortable and worth the buy. Their leggings and yoga pants are also my GO-TO, and you bet I brought all that stuff with me when I went travelling! Like I said, their stuff is cheap enough to throw away and buy new stuff on the road.

ASOS is my go-to for plus size clothing. The majority of the dresses that I brought on my backpacking trip with me were ASOS dresses. That being said, ASOS Curve runs a little large sometimes. Modcloth is also really cute, but wouldn’t recommend bringing any of their stuff on the road, as it might get heavy/dirty. Though I love their stuff <3

Thanks for posting this. I’ve found so much travel packing info is focused on young, thin girls – well I guess you don’t need to be that to pack mainly shorts and singlet tops but I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing that!

Most of the stuff I’ve packed for my upcoming holiday is from modcloth. I love their clothes so much and it’s just as easy to pack cute clothes as ugly ones 🙂 Have you checked out Dorothy Perkins in the UK? They have some cute dresses too.

I second Dorothy Perkins…I’m going travelling at the end of this month and the majority of my clothing is from there. Also check out New Look (UK store), their plus size range Inspire has quite a lot of choice and is good value. Asos stock a selection of the range but not the full thing.

Wow, your plus-size postings are great! I was wondering if I was the only ‘big girl” that likes to travel. Trying to dress modestly when you have gianormous boobs is very hard. I don’t want to dress like a slob, or man style, but a curvy figure gets attention no matter what you’re wearing. I feel like my carry-on is just the right size for my bras. Michele, Thanks so much for your kind words! There are definitely plenty of plus-size ladies traveling all over the world! Dealing with big boobs is definitely a major struggle…especially having to carry more bras, as they’re hard to replace on the road.

A great brand in Aus is TS14 (I think they have a UK range now). They make a lot of crinkle crush type tunics – easy wash and no ironing. I change their look thru a trip with different coloured layering tops underneath. And they suit all weathers as you just add longer heavier layers under them or a cardi over the top. Can look casual during the day but with a scarf or cheap costume jewellery and some ballet flats they are ready for dinner or theatre.

I second the TS14 posting – and yes the post to the UK and NZ. I’ve worn this label for a number of years now, almost exclusively as their designs are great, they fit well, the materials are generally very good and the clothes wash and wear extremely well. I take their small size (14-16), but the sizes go higher than that. Best of all the great buy from this season will pretty much always go with the basics from the season before. It all packs easily and they have great basics like plain and fancier tank tops and tank dresses for layering. Prices is very reasonably and they always have something reduced.

We are going on a 21 day transatlantic cruise to Rome. From there we will do Tuscany for a week and then two weeks in Croatia. I understand the capsule, but I’m struggling with how to prepare for cruise and land travel, since you usually have to have a few dress clothes/shoes for the cruise. Any suggestions? Thought about once we got off the cruise, shipping some of our closes home that we won’t need to Italy & Croatia.

Where is the hat from.

Traveling to Spain and Italy for 11 days and want to travel light and only pack in a carry on. With the mix and match outfits I’m assuming you wear them several times without washing them. Is there anything to use to keep clothing item smelling fresh? I know odd question but just thought I would ask. This is going to be my first travel experience.

Hi Alee, it’s actually a great question. Yes you would rewear some clothing but you can also do laundry half way through your trip if needed. Here are a few other tips:

1) hang up your clothing after wearing it to let it air out 2) spritz a bit of febreze of needed 3) stick a fabric softener sheet inside your luggage 4) choose fabrics that don’t absorb sweat and scents 5) pack more tops and less bottoms because it’s easier to rewear bottoms without washing 6) if traveling in the summer, take dresses!

Depending on the time of year you’re traveling, you could take 3 bottoms + 7 tops and only rewear 4 of the tops or just wash them by hand after a week. Choose easy to wash fabrics.

If you’re only spending on or two nights in each city and doing laundry on the go is difficult:

– For cold weather travel, wear merino wool thermals under everything – they can be worn for days and won’t absorb scents so you’ll only need one or two pairs. Since they’re closest to you skin you won’t need to wash the rest of your clothing. – For hot weather travel, clothing is lighter so you can pack 3-4 bottoms and 11 tops and not do any laundry at all. That’s the Maximista size capsule wardrobe and should still fit into a carry-on with packing cubes.

I’m doing 2 months in SEA next spring and have a gazillion clothes I barely wear that are basically brand new. What’s that Pareto rule – we use 20% of the things we have 80% of the time. OK I totally need help before my family accuses me of committing another atrocious OVER PACKING CRIME LMAO! We are going to Miami/Orlando for Thanksgiving week – 8 days. We will be going for a somewhat family vacation, daughter’s competitive event, enjoy a football game, Sea World, Magic Kingdom – the works – have fun, nothing crazy. Hi Lety, thanks for your comment! Mexico city is a very modern city and you’ll see many local fashionistas and hipsters. The Condesa and Roma areas in particular will leave you wishing you brought your coolest clothes from home.

You can most definitely wear leggings and skinny jeans/jeggings. I think when it says to avoid anything tight, think more along the lines of a clothing item that is overly fitted in your rear or bust area 😉

Shorts are actually ok however if they’re very short you’re rolling solo in some areas you may receive unwanted looks. Obviously shorts that are very short and revealing are never a good idea. I’d pack a pair if I were you, feel out the vibe and worse case, wear them over your leggings! The best way to wear shorts is to balance them out with a longer sleeve top 😉

Oh my! I have been googling and imaging minimalist wardrobe all day. Bonzai!! Where do you find leggings that fit? The ones I’ve tried always stretch out in the crotch making me feel like I’m a duck waddling along. I never wear leggings alone but can’t imaging the waddle with a cute pair of shorts or a shorter skirt.

Hi Katara, the trick is to wear leggings with tunics so you have a bit of extra coverage in all the right places 😉 Alternatively, you can find leggings that are “legging” type material but have a more structured pant style cut that won’t result in the stretched out crotch which is the crappy part of leggings.

Hi, My personal favorite cargo pants are the Kuhl roll-ups! Capri’s in an instant, and look nice either way. They also come in a pretty large number of colors, and roll up small enough to pack easily. I’ve also found that they tend to not wrinkle. If you like lighter weight cargoes, then I like LLBeans stretch version. They are called Vista Camp pants, and can roll up, or be pulled in at the ankle for a different look. These always go with me because they are also workable as sleep pants. The fabric is stretchy in all. Very, very light and comfortable. Best of luck to all! Connie Q directions!

Great tips! I always travel on planes in a dress with leggings. It’s at least as comfortable as tracksuit pants but much more versatile. Generally I’m traveling from a cold Melbourne winter to somewhere warm so when I get to my destination I can just take off the leggings & I’m ready to go.

I have seriously studied how to travel with less clothes, and have taken a carry on for my annual week in Maine. But, there is now way I would wear shorts that short. I am going to Germany and Poland next summer, for 13 days and was considering taking a duffle, instead of a carry on. But, maybe I can get by with just a carry on, after all. I do take a personal item, with my netbook, travel info. like tickets and itineraries, and plastic zipper bag of toiletries, as well as a book and my MP3 player.

Or if you go to a colder place, maybe you pack more pants and no shorts. You just have to adjust the lists and items for your own needs 🙂

Yes it’s nice to travel Europe without wheels – I used a duffle/wheel bag when I went in 2008. Found it nice to have access to both features. A carry on for 13 days sounds doable especially because you’d probably only need travel size toiletries – they can usually last a couple of weeks. safe travels!

Totally true. Too many options make simple decisions much more difficult! Packing smart is the way to go. I unfortunately, throw a bunch of things I “enjoy wearing” and just hope* things come together. Definitely going to start using this site to eliminate half of the stuff I never wear anyway while overseas! Trekking it all is such a headache.

The 35 best plus-size clothing brands of 2024, according to stylists

As a plus-size woman, I personally know the struggle of finding great clothing in extended sizes. Fortunately, where once there were only two or three retailers catering to plus sizes, now there are dozens of dedicated brands making the best plus-size clothing we've seen in years. Retailers that were once off limits to plus size folks like Abercrombie & Fitch and Anthropologie have also extended their size ranges. "We've really made some pretty big leaps and bounds when it comes to plus-size fashion and having a more inclusive shopping experience," said Kat Eves, plus-size celebrity stylist .

Still, shopping for plus sizes is far from easy or enjoyable for many, and progress has been slow. "The fashion retail industry is absolutely improving but in my opinion, not fast enough," said Hina Low, a personal stylist and plus-size content creator who works under the name Heensie . "We have seen popular retailers expand to a size 20 perhaps, but rarely more than that and often, only online. This is not true inclusion."

Eves echoed this, noting that major retailers' plus-size styles lean more basic than trendy. "Plus-size people are still getting stuck in a place of not necessarily being able to express themselves through fashion on the same level as smaller bodied people without having to really do a lot of research," said Eves.

If you're in that position, I've done some of that research for you. In addition to my own 20+ years of experience shopping for plus sizes, I consulted Eves and Heensie to assemble this guide. While I've included fast fashion retailers for convenience, both Eves and Heensie said they're most excited about (and prefer shopping from) the small, independent plus size brands that have been cropping up to fill the gap in the market for trendy, stylish plus-size clothing. Dia & Co

Shop all clothing at Dia & Co

Size range: 0X to 5X; 10 to 32

You may know Dia & Co as a clothing subscription service , but the brand has expanded in recent years to be a full-service retailer of plus-size clothing. While it still offers its signature plus-size styling boxes, you can now shop à la carte for everything from swimsuits to jeans. In 2022, Dia & Co acquired 11 Honoré, an online marketplace of upscale brands offering plus sizes, so you can also browse designers like Diane Von Furstenberg and GANNI right from Dia's website. Shipping is free for à la carte orders over $75 and all styling boxes. Returns are free.  

Shop all clothing at Eloquii

Size range: 14 to 32

Eloquii is a dedicated plus-size retailer catering to women size 14 and above, and Heensie said it is "very well loved and a go-to for many plus-size customers." There's a strong focus on work-appropriate attire, so you'll find great options for suiting and many day-to-night outfits, with the occasional statement piece ideal for a night out. Elqouii also has a bridal shop . You can get free shipping on orders over $125, though you'll pay shipping for returns unless you exchange for store credit. 

Shop all plus-size clothing at Amazon

Size range: 00 to 42; XXS to 8X

You can find thousands of plus-size clothing right on Amazon; the retailer even has a dedicated landing page, The Plus Shop , for extended sizes. Like the rest of Amazon, it can be tricky to browse and you'll find lots of third party sellers that could be hit or miss in quality. However, it's a great catch-all place to shop if you have a specific item in mind, but you're not finding it at other retailers.

If you're looking for a starting place, we recommend checking out The Drop , a size inclusive initiative where Amazon launches microcollections with influencers (including many plus-size influencers). As always, Prime members will get free shipping on eligible orders and returns are free and easy through Amazon's return center. 

Reformation

Shop all plus size clothing at Reformation

Size range: 0 to 24

Reformation is one of the most popular upmarket clothing brands of the moment, and nearly 100 of its styles are available in extended sizing. The brand is known for its sustainable pieces, from statement dresses to capsule basics. Most of the pieces are available up to a size 24 and fit true to size, but several — such as the Layla Skirt ES — run large and could likely fit up to a size 28. The clothing is on the pricier side, but the brand is climate neutral certified and the pieces are built to last. Returns are free if you keep at least one item in your order. If you return all items, you'll incur an $8 return shipping fee.

Anthropologie

Shop all plus-size clothing at Anthropologie 

Size range: XXS to 4X; 00 to 26W

If your style is dreamy and whimsical, Anthropologie is the place to shop. The retailer offers over 600 styles in plus sizes, with options for up to a size 26W (though you'll find the largest selection in sizes 16 to 22). Shipping is free on orders over $50, but you'll pay $5.95 return shipping unless you return in store. While its in-store plus-size offerings are limited, its clothing rental service Nuuly is a great way to try styles if you don't want to commit. You can rent six items at a time for $98 a month and you'll get a discount on any items you want to keep. 

Shop all plus-size styles from Madewell

Size Range : 00 to 28

We love Madewell for affordable women's basics , great-fitting jeans , and on-trend minimalist pieces. Madewell's youthful designs feature lots of neutrals, denim, earthy tones, and boxy fits. The brand carries most styles in both straight and plus sizes up to a size 28 or 6X and makes fantastic fitting plus-size jeans. Madewell's 90s Straight Jeans and Perfect Vintage Straight Jeans are among the best pairs I've ever owned, and they gave me the confidence to make the leap from skinny jeans to trendier straight-leg styles. Even if you're a casual Madewell customer, we recommend signing up for the brand's free rewards program, Madewell Insider, which will get you free returns on your orders (among other perks). Otherwise, expect to pay $7.95 for returns. 

Shop all plus-size styles from Cider

Size Range: XXS to 4X

For super trendy, TikTok viral clothing, Cider is the place to go. There are hundreds of styles available in sizes up to 4X. Everything is incredibly affordable with prices ranging from $8 for a bodysuit to $52 for a faux leather jacket. We recommend checking the product size chart for each garment before you buy, as the sizing seems to vary a lot from item to item. For example, we've seen skirts on the site that are both labeled as 4X, but range anywhere from 55 inches to 61 inches in the hips. Fortunately, returns are free, but you'll need to start your return within 14 days of receiving your items.

Shop all plus-size clothing at BAACAL

Size range: 10 to 28

BAACAL is the plus-size line from Vince designer Cynthia Vincent, and reflects the same commitment to high-end, sustainable fashion using fabrics sourced from eco-forests in Japan. "She does such a beautiful job of creating really high-end pieces that look effortless," Eves said of the designer's kaftans, dresses, and jackets. BAACAL is a great place to shop for truly special pieces that you'll keep in your closet for decades, and its prices reflect that; you can expect to pay $200 to $400 for most items in the collection. The brand uses its own in-house sizing : its size 1 is meant to fit a US 10-12, while its size 5 should fit a US 26-28. Shipping is free on orders over $250, but you'll pay a $12 fee for each item returned. Dia & Co carries a small collection of BAACAL items and offers free returns if you want to give the brand a try without the hefty return fees. 

Universal Standard

Shop all clothing at Universal Standard

Size range: 00 to 40

Universal Standard was one of the first retailers to pioneer true size inclusivity, offering every style in size 00 to 40. The brand uses its own letter sizing system that equates a medium to a size 18 (the average size of a woman in the US), and its unique Fit Liberty program lets you exchange many items for a different size up to a year from your purchase date, no matter how used the clothing is.

"Universal Standard is one of the more popular brands that are really leading the way in the fashion industry in terms of inclusive sizing," Heensie said. "They are my go-to for plus-sized denim, in both my clients' wardrobes and in my personal." The brand is also one of Insider's favorite places for shoppers of all sizes to buy the best workwear , affordable women's basics , the best T-shirt , and the best women's jeans , and statement pieces like leather jackets . Standard shipping is free, and for returns or exchanges not covered by the Fit Liberty program, you'll have 30 days to send your items back and will have to pay a processing fee of between $4.50 and $7.50. 

River Island

Shop all plus size clothing at River Island

Size range: 2 to 24 (6 to 28 in UK sizing)

UK-based brand River Island now ships to the US, and offers many of its styles in plus sizes, including faux leather jackets, work-appropriate trousers, and stylish knitwear. All of the pieces feel like elevated and contemporary takes on classics; a similar vibe to Reformation. River Island is definitely a place to shop if you're looking for capsule-worthy pieces that can be dressed up or down. Because the clothing is processed internationally, returns unfortunately incur a $15 fee.

Size range: XXS to 5X

From the best white T-shirts to the best lingerie , one brand that repeatedly shows up as a top pick in our buying guides is Kim Kardashian's SKIMS.  Products from SKIMS have made our guides to the best underwear , the best leggings , the best bras , and more. Since its launch in 2019, SKIMS has offered shapewear, underwear, loungewear, and more in a size inclusive range — its clothing currently goes up to a size 5X in most styles and up to a 44H in bras. It's a great place to shop for underwear, plus-size lingerie , and basics like T-shirts and leggings. You have up to 30 days to return items, and you'll pay a $6 return shipping fee on your order, unless you choose to receive your return in store credit. 

Shop all clothing at Wray

Size range: XXS to 6X

One of Heensie's favorite places to shop for "folks who want something a bit more bold" is Wray. The brand makes an assortment of upscale statement pieces in a variety of eye-catching colors and patterns, which Heensie says "give a perfect hint of edge to any wardrobe." We particularly love its patterned sets, which are chic enough to wear to work, but loose and comfortable for lounging at home. While the pieces are pricier, Wray has a strong focus on sustainability and working with ethically run factories for production. There's an option to shop in store at the brand's NYC location, otherwise you'll pay $9 in flat-rate shipping. You have 30 days to make a return and there is a $4.99 return processing fee. 

Abercrombie & Fitch

Shop all plus size jeans at Abercrombie & Fitch

Size range: 000 to 24 (23 to 37 in Abercrombie's in-house sizing)

If you live life in a larger body, the words "Abercrombie & Fitch" probably conjure deep memories of teenage exclusion. Surprisingly, the retailer has become a beloved destination for plus size jeans in the past few years. Abercrombie now carries short, regular, and long length jeans up to a size 24 (what it calls "size 37"). In addition to offering extended sizes in many of its traditional styles, its Curve Love line also provides an extra two inches of room in the hips, so there are options for a great fit regardless of whether you carry your weight in your stomach or hips. While we'd love to see the same inclusivity applied to Abercrombie's other clothing (which currently only seems to run up to an XXL), we recommend giving this unlikely retailer a try for great fitting plus size jeans.

Shop all clothing at Old Navy

Size range: 0 to 30; XS to 4X

For many plus-size customers, Old Navy is in the doghouse at the moment, as the retailer backed out of its much hyped "BODEQUALITY" campaign that promised to stock up to size 30 in stores. Still, Old Navy offers hundreds of inexpensive plus-size styles online, with the option to return in store or through the mail for free. The retailer often has big sales and you'll find many pieces available for under $20, making this a great place to shop for affordable clothes that are still on trend. 

Shop all plus-size styles from Shein

Size Range: 0 (XXS) to 34 (9X)

Shein is one of Gen Z's favorite retailers , and fortunately, it's incredibly size inclusive. Like Cider, Shein has hundreds of plus-size styles at incredibly affordable prices. You'll find everything from lingerie, to swimwear, to wedding dresses, along with thousands of tops, dresses, and pants in nearly every style you can think of. With the launch of its Fit+ line, the retailer now carries up to a size US 34 (what it classifies as a 9X). We recommend always checking the size chart before ordering, as exact measurements vary from product to product. You have 35 days to make returns, and return shipping is free.

Size range: XS to 3X

Spanx may be known for its shapewear, but the retailer has expanded in the past few years to include workwear and loungewear in up to a size 3X. Spanx is one of our favorite places to shop for stylish work pants , comfortable bras , day-to-night leggings , and tights that don't rip . Almost all the pieces are in neutral colors to easily mix and match with your existing wardrobe. Shipping and 90-day returns are totally free, so it's definitely worth giving Spanx a try if you're new to this retailer.

Size range: 0 to 32

Any plus-size millennial can probably recount the relief they felt the first time they discovered ASOS. The retailer was one of the first to make a substantial collection of truly on-trend, cool clothing in plus sizes. "ASOS Curve can be difficult size-wise, because they carry an array of brands," said Heensie. "However, they are plentiful in their options and many plus-sized folks have been deferring to them for years for trendy pieces." At ASOS, you'll find hundreds of inexpensive styles for any occasion you can think of; it even offers plus-size jewelry . Most shoppers report that the clothing runs large, so you may want to size down for the best fit. The retailer offers free shipping over $50, and returns are quick, easy, and free.   

Good American

Shop all clothing at Good American

Size range: 00 to 32 

Co-founded by Khloe Kardashian, Good American offers a size-inclusive range of jeans and other apparel in a plethora of styles. We've tested Good American jeans on all different shapes and sizes, and the retailer remains one of our picks for the best places to buy women's jeans . While jeans are Good American's forte, don't sleep on its other offerings — we recently named it one of the best places to shop for women's suits . You'll also find plenty of basics like white tees, bodysuits, and loungewear. Shipping is free on orders over $125, but you'll pay a $2.99 to $7.99 restocking fee if you need to make a return for cash (exchanges and returns for store credit are free). 

Shop all plus-size styles from H&M

Size Range: 0 (XXS) to 30 (4X)

H&M is another great spot to check out for cheap plus-size clothes. The retailer only started offering expanded sizing in the last few years, but has quickly ramped up its collection; you can now find more than 600 styles available in plus sizes. Heensie also noted that the brand recently took on plus-size model Tess Holliday as a consultant, which shows promise for the future of the brand. In addition to a wide variety of basics (think your classic black tees and white button ups), you'll also find a nice array of statement pieces like band tees and neon knit layers. We recommend joining H&M's loyalty program , which will get you free online returns, otherwise you'll have to pay $5.99 in return shipping or return your items in store. 

Shop all plus-size clothing at Target

Size range: XS to 4X; 00 to 30

While Target offers a limited selection of plus sizes in stores, you'll find thousands of styles on the retailer's website. Target's website isn't set up well for browsing, so we recommend perusing the straight-size clothing in store and then finding your size on Target's app or website. We particularly love the retailer's selection of bathing suits and inexpensive jeans. Target has one of the best return policies in the biz; you have 90 days to make a return on regular merchandise and up to a year to return items from Target's own lines (Universal Thread, A New Day, etc.).

Shop all clothing at Insyze

Size range: 10 to 40

Insyze is a plus-size online marketplace that Eves said "makes it easy for plus-size shoppers to shop with ethical and sustainable brands." The retailer provides a comprehensive sustainability profile on each brand it sells and has storefronts specifically for sustainable and designer clothing. You can shop several of the other brands in this guide, like Sante Grace and Baacal right from Insyze. It's a great place to discover new plus-size brands, especially since shipping is free on orders over $100 and returns are completely free within 14 days (you can choose between a full cash return or a 110% store credit). 

Shop all plus-size clothing at Athleta

Size range: XXS to 3X

From athleisure to technical apparel, Athleta is the place to look if you're in the market for plus-size athletic wear. Many pieces we love, including the Brooklyn Ankle Pants are available in up to a size 3X and are nice enough to wear out and about, or even to work. We still think Athleta has a ways to go until true size inclusivity, but the brand is a Certified B Corps , meaning it has met the highest standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. Returns are free and you have 60 days from the ship date to return in store or through the mail.

Shop all plus sizes at Mango

Size range: XXS to 4X; 0 to 22

If you're looking to put together a capsule wardrobe, Mango makes elevated staples in neutral tones for effortless mixing and matching. You'll find timeless pieces with a French aesthetic that are equally at home at the office or out to brunch. While the retailer offers plenty of styles in up to a 4X, keep in mind that the pieces sold in numerical sizes (such as jeans and some dresses) only go up to a size 22. Returns within 30 days are free, so it's worth trying out a few different sizes to see what fits best.

Big Bud Press

Shop all clothing at Big Bud Press

Size range: XXS to 6XL

If your aesthetic leans more "should have been born in the '70s," Big Bud Press is worth a look. You'll find unisex clothing up to a size 6X with strong vintage hippie vibes — think bell bottoms and psychedelic patterns in silhouettes range from androgynous to slightly feminine. "I live in their jumpsuits when I'm working as a stylist," said Eves, who also noted that the LA-based retailer revamped its sizing based on feedback from plus-size customers. Return policies are on the strict side: Returns and exchanges must be postmarked within 14 days of delivery, and the customer is responsible for return shipping.

Size range: XS to 5X

If you still scoff at the idea of wearing "hard pants" post-pandemic, Free Label is a great place to shop for pieces that are stylish yet comfortable. "They make the most glorious loungewear and bras," said Heensie. The brand focuses on natural fibers like linen and cotton, along with some pieces made using deadstock fabrics; all sustainable options. Heensie said the brand is very community-oriented and regularly solicits feedback on fit. You'll find models of all sizes on the site, so you can get an accurate idea of what the clothing looks like on various body types. Shipping is free on orders over $100 and the brand offers returns within 7 days of receiving the items.

Size range: practically any

One of Heensie's favorite retailers is Sotela. "I love their commitment to a perfect fit at any size," said Heensie of Sotela's made-to-order garments and custom sizing. Everything is made in the brand's LA studio from sustainable, eco-friendly fabrics. The brand offers dresses, pants, jumpsuits, and tops in a range of cotton and linen fabrics dyed in a range of earthy colors. You can choose from a pattern-cut size (up to a 67 inch hip width), or opt for a custom size for the most tailored fit. All pattern-cut items are eligible for exchange for store credit within 14 days of delivery. Custom fit items are final sale.

Size range: 0 to 26

Many plus-size designs trend hyper-feminine, but if your style leans more masculine to gender-neutral, Wildfang is a great place to shop. The brand recently expanded its size offerings to fit up to what would typically be a 26 in traditional women's sizing. You'll find button-ups, jumpsuits, and trousers that can easily be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. "Their suiting options, especially for gender-inclusive style is something that I'm really excited about," Eves said. Shipping is free over $50 and returns are free within 35 days of purchase.

Size Range: XXS to 6X

For more princess-style dresses, take a peek at Selkie. Among hundreds of designs available in up to a size 6X. You'll find flouncy silhouettes inspired by Mary Antoinette, Claude Monet, and Jane Eyre. With dresses starting at around $200 and ranging up to $1,000, these are certainly investment pieces, but it's a great place to browse for prom, bridal, and special occasion wear. While dresses are Selkie's forte, you'll also find a handful of loungewear, skirts, and puffer jackets. Shipping is free for orders over $300, otherwise you'll pay $20. You have 15 days from receiving your item to initiate a return or exchange, and you'll have to pay for return shipping.

Loud Bodies

Eves and Heensie both recommended Loud Bodies, which specializes in loud, bright, colorful clothing, with options for up to size 42 (10X). You'll find everything from workwear basics to statement pinafores in unique prints and flashy colors, all with a focus on sustainability. "I love how utterly whimsical this brand is," Heensie says. "Their dresses are like something out of a storybook, and are perfect for anyone who is looking for a bit of cottagecore or just plain magic in their wardrobe." The retailer is based in Romania and each item is made to order, so expect a wait time of 2-4 weeks on orders. You'll also be on the hook for return shipping if your order is under $200.  

Tunnel Vision

Shop all clothing at Tunnel Vision

Size range: XXS to 7X

"This is another great brand that prioritizes size inclusivity, is very community-oriented and dials up the edginess even further," Heensie said of Tunnel Vision, who noted the brand also offers size-inclusive vintage and buy-back stock . The Los Angeles-based retailer cheekily calls its designs "clothes for deadbeat, lowlife weirdos," and its offerings reflect that punk-rock irreverence, with lots 90s-core designs that look like an angsty teen made a collage out of 1997 Delia's and Hot Topic catalogs. "My punk and goth clients love pieces from here," Heensie said. Tunnel Vision uses carbon-neutral shipping and all its new clothing is made in certified sweatshop-free environments. The brand doesn't currently offer returns, but does allow exchanges for store credit. 

Sante Grace

Shop all clothing at Sante Grace

Size range: 1X to 4X

"Sante Grace out of LA is doing some really interesting, ethically made fun fashion for people of lots of different style types," said Eves. "So you've got everything from a really cool gold sparkle jogger to a totally work appropriate suit vest." Tracy Christian, the designer behind Sante Grace, was inspired by fashion houses like Balmain and YSL; luxury brands she couldn't fit into as a plus-size person. She channels similar edginess and modernity into her own designs, which include caftans, rompers, dresses, and suiting. Shipping is free on purchases over $125, and you have 7 days to return items for either an exchange or store credit. You'll pay return shipping and a $5 restocking fee per item.

Shop all clothing at Nooworks

If you love bold statement pieces and lots of color, Nooworks is the place to shop. The brand is a favorite of Eves, who particularly loves its jumpsuits. "They have some really interesting fun designs that are created by independent artists," Eves said of the Nooworks' bold patterns. The brand prioritizes sustainable fabrics and prints its patterns in Los Angeles using a rotary printing technique that is more environmentally friendly than dyeing. It also offers a resale platform where customers can buy and sell used Nooworks' pieces. You have seven days from the receipt of your items to initiate a return or exchange. Returns for cash incur a $10 restocking fee.     

Tamara Malas

Shop all clothing from Tamara Malas

Size range: 2 to 36

If maximalism is your vibe, you'll love the plus-size options from Tamara Malas. You'll find items that are bright and loud in both color and silhouette — think bi-color velvet pants and psychedelic print biker shorts. Shipping within the US is $7, and like other small retailers the return window is quite short — you have 14 days from receiving your item to initiate a return and you're on the hook for the cost of return shipping.

Pine Cone Row

Shop all clothes from Pine Cone Row

Size range: 0 to 30

While many retailers that make plus sizes base their measurements and fit on straight size models, Pine Cone Row designs its garments twice — on both a size 8/M and size 20/2X. The result is a tailored fit that feels custom to plus-size bodies. Pine Cone Row launched its 001 collection in September 2022, so it's relatively new on the scene, but its first five drops have been filled with a mix of staple and statement pieces. In addition to its thoughtful sizing approach, this Black woman-owned business uses fabric sourced from its home base of Los Angeles, with a priority of using as much US milled or overstock fabric as possible. The brand currently doesn't offer returns or exchanges.

Shop all dresses at JessaKae

JessaKae makes dreamy, fairytale-like dresses, with most designs available up to a size 6X. The brand is prominent on TikTok and Instagram, where you can find videos of the styles modeled in every size. Just keep in mind that the return policy is quite restrictive: the brand only offers return credit in the form of a gift card and will deduct the cost of return shipping. Exchanges are free, however.

Best Button-down

Columbia women's boundless trek layering long sleeve shirt.

This stretchy, moisture-wicking, endlessly versatile button-down can be worn as-is, layered over another shirt, or used as a swimsuit cover-up.

It's technically a hiking shirt but can also work for travel days and most casual outings.

Columbia's Boundless Trek Shirt is the perfect button-down for travel — I was glad to have it with me on my last trip. It's made of a stretchy, wrinkle-resistant blend of polyester and elastane. Beyond that, the fabric draws sweat away from your body, repels stains, and even offers UPF 50 protection from the sun.

It's technically a hiking shirt, but I think it's ideal for travel days, sightseeing, shopping, and other casual outings as well. Thanks to the long length and relaxed fit, I was able to wear it both as-is and layer it over tanks and tees. You could even use it as a swimsuit cover-up. I also appreciate that there's a front chest pocket and a hidden internal pocket that fits an ID, credit card, or room key.

Best Long-sleeve Shirt

Athleta ascent seamless top.

The Ascent Seamless Top is ultra-soft, lightweight, and breathable, with a close-to-body fit that makes it a great base layer.

It's 42 percent wool so it may be best for cooler temperatures.

Athleta's Ascent Seamless Top is just the thing for travel. This long-sleeve shirt is woven from a blend of nylon, merino wool, and spandex. The fabric is wrinkle-resistant, lightweight, and oh-so-soft, while the close-to-body fit makes for a great base layer.

Since the wool content adds warmth, it might be best for cooler weather — but merino wool is a temperature-regulating material , so you probably won't overheat. The mesh-like back panels and pointelle strip down the front offer breathability, too. Wool is also naturally antimicrobial, meaning it repels odor-causing bacteria.

This classic tee can be dressed up or down, worn as a base layer, and rocked with jeans, pleated shorts, athleisure wear — you name it.

It's a slim fit and runs slightly small, so consider ordering a size up.

Everyone's idea of the perfect T-shirt is different, but if you ask us, this one from J.Crew checks all the boxes. You get the lightweight, easy-breezy feel of linen (which, yes, is known for wrinkling) with the flexible crease resistance of polyester and elastane.

This crewneck tee can be worn with just about anything — we're talking jeans, trousers, shorts, or athleisure. You can rock the T-shirt on its own and dress it up or down by layering it under a flannel or blazer. Just a heads up, it runs a little small, and since it's a slim fit, you may want to order a size up from what you normally wear.

Best Versatile Top

Everlane the supima micro-rib scoop-neck tee.

The sleeve length, neckline, and silhouette make it easy to pair with laid-back, professional, and dressier attire.

Even though it's ribbed, the material is somewhat thin.

With elbow-length sleeves, a sophisticated scoop neck, and a slim (but not too tight) fit, this is the ideal in-between shirt for travel. The versatile design can be worn in transitional weather and dressed up with professional attire or down with jeans or linen shorts. You can also layer it under a blazer, cardigan, or button-down.

This shirt is primarily Supima cotton, a supremely breathable and naturally moisture-resistant fiber, with a small amount of elastane woven in for stretch and wrinkle resistance. Even though it's ribbed, the fabric is a bit thin. It's not sheer, though, and long-staple cotton like Supima is much more durable than regular cotton.

It may arrive slightly wrinkled from the packaging but will relax after washing.

We're also big fans of this blouse. The fabric promises reliable wrinkle resistance, so you can fold it, roll it, or compress it into a packing cube without worrying about creases. It's also very accessibly priced and comes in nearly 30 colors and prints, ranging from neutrals to florals to bolder hues.

The sleeveless, slightly flowy design can be tucked into dress pants and layered under a blazer or cardigan. You could also wear it with jeans, either untucked or with a French tuck (just in the front).

This sweater has a classic crewneck, raglan-style shoulders, a relaxed fit, and a boxier cut. We love the modern silhouette, but bear in mind tucking it into low-rise pants might be tricky.

L.L.Bean

This tank makes an excellent undershirt or sleeveless top for warm weather, and you can count on the stretchy material to resist wrinkling in your suitcase.

It's on the longer side and falls past the hip.

This tank from L.L.Bean is the best of both worlds. It's 95 percent cotton, so you can bet it's breathable, moisture-wicking, soft, and gentle against the skin. Since cotton is known to wrinkle in the wash, the remaining 5 percent is spandex. The result? A stretchy sleeveless top you can roll as tightly as you want when packing your suitcase.

The cut is on the longer side for easy tucking and a little extra cover when wearing it with form-fitting bottoms, like yoga pants or bike shorts. Since this tank top is so reasonably priced, you might consider getting it in multiple colors.

Unbound Merino Travel Dress

It never needs ironing, repels funky smells, dries quickly, and can be worn in multiple seasons.

The brand suggests laying flat to dry rather than tossing it in the dryer.

Unbound Merino's aptly named Travel Dress is woven mostly from merino wool, with small amounts of nylon and spandex for durability, stretch, and extra wrinkle resistance that never needs ironing. I own one myself and can attest to these qualities. The sturdy yet soft and flexible material also repels odors and dries quickly.

Since it doesn't harbor funky smells, I've worn this dress multiple times while traveling without having to wash it — meaning I could pack fewer items. The sleeveless, midi style is great for warm locales, but you can also layer it under a sweater, blazer, or jean jacket.

Best T-shirt Dress

Cozy earth brushed bamboo midi dress.

This short-sleeve dress makes outfit planning easy while resisting creases and keeping you comfy all day.

The fabric is on the heavier side, but it's still plenty breathable.

I love traveling with this T-shirt dress from Cozy Earth. The short sleeves, crew neckline, and midi length are just right for casual outings, while the knee-high side slits give me a full range of movement. Plus, as a one-and-done ensemble, packing and outfit planning for trips are much easier.

This wrinkle-resistant dress is woven from bamboo-derived viscose, acrylic, and spandex. The fabric is on the heavier side, but I find this helps prevent creases. I also appreciate that it's totally opaque yet still plenty breathable.

lululemon Utilitech Relaxed Mid-Rise Trouser 7/8 Length

With a jogger feel and a tailored-trouser look, these pants are incredibly stretchy and wrinkle-proof.

There are no belt loops, and the 7/8 cut is supposed to fall around the ankle but may be full-length for shorter people.

Lululemon's Utilitech Trousers are made of an exceptionally stretchy fabric that's not just resistant to creases but is actually entirely wrinkle-proof. But on account of the twill texture, pleats, back darts, and welt pockets, they look just like tailored dress pants to the untrained eye.

With a mid-rise waist, a slightly relaxed fit, and straight-meets-wide legs, these travel pants have a modern look without being too trendy. We also like that there's a hidden card slot in one of the front pockets.

Best Shorts

Spanx stretch twill shorts 6".

These pull-on shorts are super comfy yet functional, with pockets, belt loops, and a built-in tummy shaper.

The color may transfer onto lighter materials before the first wash.

These shorts from Spanx are a wise choice for travel. The fabric is more than 50 percent cotton for softness and breathability, while rayon, polyester, and elastane provide stretchiness and crease resistance. In true Spanx fashion, there's a built-in tummy shaper that helps smooth your midsection.

With no zippers or buttons, the pull-on style is convenient and incredibly comfy. Meanwhile, the belt loops and front and back pockets deliver functionality where you need it. The garment dye is supposed to fade over time for a worn-in look, but it might transfer onto other fabrics or materials before the first wash.

It's an ankle-length cut and runs large, so think about ordering a size down.

When it comes to comfy clothes for travel days, padding around your rental, lounging on vacation, or even working out, Vuori's Performance Joggers are hard to beat. Made of the brand's DreamKnit fabric, these Travel + Leisure editor-tested and -approved pants are stretchy, lightweight, remarkably soft, and wildly comfortable. More to the point, the polyester-elastane blend is wrinkle-resistant.

These best-selling joggers are ankle-length, but there's also a full-length version . We should note that the relaxed fit runs a bit large, so think about ordering a size down from what you usually wear unless you prefer a slouchier look.

Beyond being wrinkle-resistant, the Fleetwith Jumpsuit is quick-drying, moisture-wicking, and stretchy with five functional pockets.

A jumpsuit might not be ideal to wear on travel days.

We love jumpsuits for travel because they're a whole outfit in a single piece of clothing — except maybe on a plane when you want to be able to easily go to the bathroom. This one from Patagonia offers next-level convenience with a fabric that can be tightly rolled or compactly folded without sustaining creases.

The polyester-spandex blend is moisture-resistant and quick-drying, while the stretchy quality and side slits on the pant hems allow you to move freely. Other standout features include front and back pockets, a hidden zippered pocket, and a drawcord waist for an adjustable fit.

Consider sizing up if you plan to layer it over more than a thin shirt.

Crafted from recycled polyester and elastane, the scuba material is thick and sturdy yet lightweight and breathable. It's also resistant to pilling, sweat-wicking, quick-drying, and (notably) wrinkle-free.

Tips for Buying Wrinkle-resistant Clothing for Travel

Choose the right materials.

When buying wrinkle-resistant clothing for travel, pay close attention to the material makeup. The most crease-resistant fabrics are synthetic or semi-synthetic, like polyester, rayon, viscose, and Tencel lyocell. Stretchy fibers, such as spandex and elastane, can also help with smoothness and packability.

Cotton and linen tend to be the most wrinkle-prone, but these naturally breathable textiles can be blended with other fibers to make them wrinkle-resistant. Wool and cashmere can be good options, too, particularly in jersey fabrics or knitted weaves.

Do a test run before packing

A clothing item claiming to be wrinkle-resistant doesn't necessarily mean it's 100 percent wrinkle-proof — especially when compressed in a suitcase. With this in mind, we recommend doing a test run before your trip. Fold up each item ahead of time and leave it for at least a few hours to see how it looks onced unfolded.

Concerned about creases? Think about packing a travel steamer — or even just a wrinkle-release spray if you're short on suitcase space — just in case.

When it comes to preventing wrinkles, rolling your clothes might be best because it sidesteps any sharp bends that may result in creases. However, it depends on the garment and how tightly you roll it. For instance, a tightly rolled long-sleeve starchy shirt might unroll to reveal big creases, and a carefully folded knit sweater may do just fine placed on the uppermost layer of your main suitcase compartment.

It depends on the material and clothing item. But generally speaking, you can machine wash wrinkle-resistant clothes on a delicate or regular cycle with warm or cold water, then tumble dry them on low heat. To prevent pilling, shrinking, and misshaping the garment, you can also hang it or lay it flat to air dry. When in doubt, go with the brand's care instructions, which you can find on the tag or product webpage.
