Martin Lewis: How to get the best travel insurance on the market

As many of us set upon our annual summer holidays, we all want the best currency deal. But where do we find it? Martin Lewis gives us the lowdown - plus the best cards, their rates and how to avoid the dreaded pitfalls of holiday currency.

THE VALUE OF THE POUND: A few years ago, before the EU referendum vote, a pound bought €1.43 – since it's dropped significantly and hasn’t recovered much. Last summer it bought €1.14, and today it’s hovering around the €1.12 mark. Against the dollar, the rate is just $1.32 – about a decade ago it bought roughly $2. It’s similar with most other currencies. This has hit imports and the cost of living. Yet that’s an indirect cost to most. The most obvious effect is more expensive holidays.

APPLY FOR A SPENDING CARD: Apply now for a cheap overseas spending card. The easiest and cheapest way to spend abroad is on the right card, but they can take a couple of weeks to arrive, so early planning helps. Normally spend abroad on cards and it adds a 'non sterling exchange fee' of 3% ish, meaning £100 of euros costs you £103. Plus there are cash withdrawal fees on top. Yet specialist cards don't do that. These cards give you near-perfect rates every time you spend, on every trip to every country.

MARTIN’S TOP TRAVEL CARDS:

Top for cheap spending, reliability and a free £20.

The Halifax Clarity card gives near-perfect rates on spending everywhere, plus apply before 31 August, and spend abroad on it by the end of September and you get £20 cashback. The card’s been around a long time, and has very good feedback. It's better to spend on the card than withdraw cash, and of course, as it’s a credit card repay in full so there's no 18.9% rep APR interest. If you do withdraw cash, there's interest even if you repay in full (about £1.50 per £100 per month), but even that's usually better than bureaux de change.

2. Cheap spending & cash withdrawals, plus no credit check.

The debit card from app-only Starling Bank has no charge for spending abroad and no cash withdrawal fee. Plus unlike a credit card there’s no credit check, (unless you want an overdraft) so anyone can get it - though it does do ID checks) Technically it's a current account, but you can just add cash to it for spending abroad as you needn't switch to it or make a min pay-in.

3. Top card if you want it for spending abroad and at home.

The Tandem credit card also gives near-perfect exchange rates on spending worldwide, plus 0.5% cashback on spending in the UK and abroad. So if you want to trouser just one card to pay off IN FULL and spend everywhere, this is a good option. Like the Halifax Clarity, its 18.9% rep APR for spending and cash withdrawals, but it's app-only (though has some poor reviews) and a new deal, so I don't know how long it will last.

BEWARE OF OVERSEAS DEBIT CARDS: Beware of the overseas debit cards from hell. Not only do these debit cards add around 3% to the exchange rate and an ATM fee, they also add charges every time you use them overseas. They are the standard card from:

- Bank of Scotland (50p fee per transaction)

- Halifax (50p fee per transaction)

- Lloyds (50p fee per transaction)

- Santander (£1.25 fee per transaction)

- TSB (£1 fee per transaction)

- Clydesdale/Yorkshire (no spending fee but minimum £1.50 exchange fee per transaction) - NatWest/RBS (no spending fee but minimum £1 exchange fee per transaction, though waived till Sep for most customers) Any other card, including a credit card (if repaid in full), is cheaper to spend on than these.

DON’T EXCHANGE MONEY AT THE AIRPORT: Want travel cash – think about it sooner and don’t leave it until the airport. Never wait until you get to the airport or ferry station to get cash, rates there are hideous. For example it can cost you nearly £1,050 to get €1,000 at the airport (not pre-ordered) compared to £900 via the cheapest online bureau and less if you spend on the cheapest overseas card. Ignore such marketing spiel as ‘commission free’ that just means they load the cost into the exchange rate. Instead just compare by simply asking how many dollars, euros or whatever you’ll get for your cash after all fees. Use an online travel money comparison site to do it for you is the easiest way.

WILL BREXIT AFFECT MY EUROS? Many who are going away later in the summer are asking “with the Brexit discussions should I buy euros now or wait?” Currency moves are unpredictable. If you're worried, buy half now (either via cash or a prepaid card - both of which effectively lock you in at today’s rate – the top rates tend to come from Revolut though it charges £5 to get direct, though search online and you can find it for free) and the rest using the best specialist credit cards once there (as they give you the rate on the day you spend).

DON’T BUY CASH OR LOAD A PREPAID CARD: Don't buy cash or load a prepaid card with a credit card. Most credit card providers count buying foreign currency as a cash withdrawal - and they usually charge a fee for those, and interest even if you repay in full. Some (including Santander and Virgin Money) do the same when loading up prepaid cards. So it's better to pay on a debit card, as they can't charge fees for it.

DON’T PAY IN POUNDS: Opt to pay in the foreign currency not pounds if they ask. If you’re paying on plastic and they ask you whether you want to pay in pounds or euros (or the local currency of where you are). Pay in euros. Then your card does the exchange rate, if not they do it, it’s usually worse.

Martin Lewis issues urgent warning to travellers after airline releases ‘super cheap’ flights from today

Martin Lewis issues urgent warning to travellers after airline releases ‘super cheap’ flights from today

Featured Image Credit: X/@MartinSLewis/murat4art/Getty Images

Martin Lewis has detailed exactly how keen travellers can bag themselves a bargain flight - but has urged shoppers to use their ‘common sense’.

Today (21 March), low-cost airline group easyJet was due to release up to 10 million new seats for sale in the UK .

Money Saving Expert founder Martin Lewis , 51, has revealed everything you need to know about how to bag the new seats at the most affordable prices and has issued a stark warning to those who wish to get involved with the free-for-all.

Why is now a good time to book flights with easyJet?

Taking to X, Martin began by explaining that on 21 March there would be a limited-time opportunity to get ‘far cheaper prices than normal’.

“You may know that easyJet has demand-pricing, so its pricing is dynamic based on how many people are trying to buy tickets for a flight ,” Martin said in the clip.

“If there’s a lot of demand, the price goes up, if there’s less demand, the price goes down.

“So usually the very cheapest point is exactly when flights are launched and if you get in at the second flights are launched and tomorrow - that’s Thursday 21 March 2024 - it’s launching a whole new range of seats.”

Martin Lewis has updated fans on what he thinks about the easyJet sale. Credit: X/@MartinSLewis

What dates should you book the easyJet flights for?

Martin explained that the budget airline would be putting up to 10 million UK seats on sale.

These seats feature on flights taking off from the UK between 1 December 2024 to 2 March 2025.

So if you think some winter sun next year sounds nice, now is the time to strike.

The exact time you should book the new easyJet flights

After detailing the event, The MoneySavingExpert.com founder revealed exactly when he believes customers should pounce.

He said: “It says 9am. But normally we’ve started to see them launch from around 6am or even earlier.”

Lewis added in a tweet this morning: "So some Easyjet flights for next winter (dec to March) seem to dropped before the supposed 9am (though it's possible more will launch then) and prices have started to rise already from what people are telling me.

"The base prices aren't as good as previous times though, but that seems to be route dependent."

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that Martin has helped wanderlust-stuck residents from booking a bargain.

During the video, he read out a testimonial from a woman called Vicky Green.

The X user had reportedly heeded the journalist's warnings last year and had booked herself a cheap seat to Lanzarote for Christmas .

She said that the price she’d paid had been £215 cheaper per seat compared to what the company were allegedly showing at a later date.

Is this definitely the cheapest the easyJet flights will be?

After reading Vicky’s gushing post, Martin posed a question: is this definitely the cheapest time to book your flights?

“Well, easyJet says this is the cheap time to book. My view is seats may get cheaper if there was very, very little demand for the flight later on,” he explained.

Martin added that Thursday’s sale was probably the ‘safest chance’ that customers have of booking cheap flights but urged travellers to use their ‘common sense’.

“If the flight looks expensive then something has obviously changed. This is a bit more art than science.”

Following Martin’s video, fans have come out in their droves to question why the money expert has detailed this super-savings event.

One X user wrote: “Out of curiosity, do you or any of your companies benefit receive benefit from easyJet for you driving this traffic to them?”

In reply, Martin typed: “No I have no link to easyJet nor does my site. Yet me writing anywhere is never linked and this video doesn't direct you to my site anyway.”

A second said: “Are you not driving demand so prices will actually be more expensive when the seats launch?”

“No because you can't buy them until the flights launch,” explained Martin. “This is about being the first on the route. We've been doing this for about 10 years, it works, and we've always told people.”

You can book flights for your next adventure on the easyJet website now.

TV money-saving expert Martin Lewis has urged people booking their summer holidays this January to act now on travel insurance and avoid a common pitfall.

Writing in his latest Money Saving Expert subscriber newsletter, the personal finance guru stressed the importance of sorting your insurance early and not leaving it to the last minute or allowing it to become neglected altogether.

“Each spring without fail, someone asks me a heartbreaking question,” he told his readers. “Usually they’ve been diagnosed with cancer or another serious condition that needs long-term treatment, and they won’t be able to go on their summer holiday.

“Yet the airline won’t refund them – within its rights as the ticket is not faulty.

“I say, ‘That’s what travel insurance is for’. Sometimes though, they tell me they haven’t got round to getting it yet.

“My heart sinks as I have to tell them there’s no recourse. Half the point of the cover is to protect you if things happen that stop you going, so get it ASAB – As Soon As You Book.”

He also advised his fans to ensure they have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or its replacement, the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), before they depart, as these permits entitle you to medical treatment in state-run hospitals and GPs practises across Europe for the same price as a local.

The GHIC was a last-minute element of the Brexit trade agreement to continue reciprocal healthcare between the UK and the EU.

The deal includes medically necessary treatment such as kidney dialysis, oxygen therapy and chemotherapy – allowing people with chronic conditions to continue to travel.

But rather than continuing with membership of the Ehic scheme, the UK’s chosen departure from the European Union means British travellers will have access to free or reduced-rate medical treatment only in the EU27 – not the associated countries of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

A separate agreement has been reached with Norway.

Anyone who has a valid Ehic need not apply for the new card, as the European document will continue in effect until its expiry date. Both cards will offer equivalent protection for emergency and medically necessary health care when in the EU on a temporary stay, which includes holiday, study and business travel.

The card is available free of charge by phone (0300 330 1350) or from nhs.uk/Ghic .

Following a Christmas break after topping the festive charts with a charity single he recorded with LadBaby, Martin Lewis is back on his customary media blitz, recently advising his audiences across various platforms on how to save money on cinema tickets , broadband and water bills .

Martin Lewis issues ‘urgent heads up’ to get cheap Easyjet flights and save hundreds

Martin Lewis revealed a hack to get cheap EasyJet flights

Our favourite money-saving guru Martin Lewis has given us a hack on how to nab the cheapest flights for your holiday this year.

You’ll need to act quickly though, because there’s only a short window of time these prices are going to be low.

Martin took to X today to share his travel hack , saying: ‘This is an urgent heads up if you fly EasyJet . There’s an opportunity to get far far cheaper prices than normal, but you’re going to have to be quick.’

Here is what you need to know

How Martin Lewis recommends you get cheap Easyjet flights

This method for getting cheap flights does only apply to EasyJet, so if you’re looking for flights with another airline, you’re out of luck.

Martin explains that EasyJet has dynamic pricing which is based on the level of demand for that particular flight.

‘If there’s a lot of demand [for that flight] the price goes up, if there’s less demand, the price goes down,’ he says.

Urgent EasyJet heads up – trick for you to get supercheap flights, won’t last long Feel free to share. pic.twitter.com/jgU8dmY6Ur — Martin Lewis (@MartinSLewis) March 20, 2024

Essentially you want to buy your flights when demand is at it’s lowest, as they’ll be the cheapest.

This is where his nifty little trick comes in. He says: ‘Usually the very cheapest point is exactly when flights are launched… get in at the second flights are launched.’

When does EasyJet launch its cheap flights?

Easyjet is launching its cheap flight bookings today – Thursday March 21, 2024.

‘It’s launching 10 million UK seats for flights from December 1, 2024 to March 2, 2025 – including that crucial Christmas period,’ Martin adds.

‘Now, if you can pounce when they launch, that is usually the very cheapest time. So when is it launching them? This is the difficult bit – it says 9am but normally we start to see them launch from 6am or even earlier.’

EasyJet have said they’re launching new flights tomorrow at 9am, but it’s worth hopping online from 6am just in case they go live earlier.

Martin says: ‘The safest thing to do would be to get online at 6am and start checking at that point but the decision is up to you.’

After sharing the same tip last year, Martin shares one of the success stories of a woman who saved hundreds of pounds.

He says: ‘Vicky Green tweeted me: “Thanks martin flights nabbed at 6.15am for Christmas in Lanzarote at £215 cheaper per seat than what they’re now showing.”

‘She sent that at 8am.’

Last year a woman saved £215 per seat using Martin's hack

Within just two hours, the flight prices had risen by £215, so getting there as early as you can is definitely worth it.

Martin also adds as a disclaimer that, obviously, if there’s no demand for the flight, there’s a chance it could at some point be cheaper than the launch price, however, you’ll never know if that will happen.

This money-saving hack comes after Martin warned couples they could be missing out on big savings, just last week.

He has warned couples that they could be missing out on a bumper tax saving of over £1,000 thanks to  marriage allowance.

To be eligible, couples must be married, with one partner a basic rate tax payer (earning up to £50,270 per year) and the other earning less than £12,570.

They could be saving up to £252 a year – and because this can be backdated four years, when the saving is added together it can reach £1,256.

The way this works is that most workers have a ‘personal allowance’ of £12,570 they can earn tax free.

If one partner is earning less than that, they won’t be making the most of the allowance, so they can apply to transfer some of it to their partner, allowing them to pay less tax.

Martin Lewis sent 'warning for millions' of Brits booking their summer holidays

Martin Lewis sent 'warning for millions' of Brits booking their summer holidays

So many people are guilty of not doing this.

Tom Earnshaw

Tom Earnshaw

It's almost that time of year again - you're either looking forward to the summer holiday you've already bagged or you're looking to book somewhere in the next month or two.

Either way, sun-seekers will soon be heading off in their millions to bask in the glorious summer weather across Europe and further afield.

But as always, Martin Lewis is here to make sure yours doesn't turn in to a holiday nightmare with some vital advice he says is a 'warning for millions' of Brits heading overseas.

Lewis, who founded the Money Saving Expert financial advice website, also regularly appears on our TVs and social media for his ITV1 and ITVX show The Martin Lewis Money Show Live .

And in one of his episodes last year, Lewis spoke about a simple but essential thing that we all need to have if we've already booked - or are about to.

Martin Lewis issued the warning last year ahead of holiday season.

What do you need to do ahead of your holiday?

Lewis explained: "Okay, this is a warning for the millions of people booking holidays at the moment.

"And I need you to understand travel insurance is not just to protect you when you go away.

"I want you to get your travel insurance 'ASAB'."

ASAB? Those who have watched before will know Lewis means 'as soon as you book'.

So if you're booked your holiday your next immediate thing to sort should be travel insurance if you didn't have it in place beforehand.

What happens if you don't?

He explained: "Every spring, I get one or more emails or contacts from somebody who says something like - 'I've just been diagnosed with a very serious form of cancer, or another equally severe illness. I booked my summer holiday, I'll be having my chemo in the summer, so I won't be able to go. I've spoken to the airline; they won't refund me. I've spoken to the hotel; they won't refund me because I didn't book it flexibly. What can I do?'.

"And I say well, your airline ticket isn't faulty. I mean, it's still available, so you don't have rights there.

"Go to your travel insurance. And so many people say to me ' haven't got my travel insurance yet, I was going to get it before I went'."

Listen up, guys!

How much does travel insurance cost?

Travel insurance costs vary depending on many factors like age, health conditions and if you want it to be an annual policy or for a specific trip.

You can also get group insurance for families.

"Please do not be the person who sends me that heartbreaking email this year," Lewis said.

"If you booked a holiday, travel insurance can be as little as £9. Get yourself on a comparison site, get yourself some protection so that if you can't go on the holiday, you're covered – not just if something goes wrong when you are on the holiday."

Martin Lewis issues urgent advice on how to get cheaper easyJet flights

Martin Lewis has provided some urgent advice for anyone looking to travel with easyJet at the end of the year or early 2025.

The Money Saving Expert posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) regarding “a whole new range of seats” that the airline is selling for flights operating between 1 December 2024 and 2 March 2025.

In the video, posted on Wednesday 20 March, Lewis states that there is “an opportunity to get far, far cheaper prices than normal”.

He explains that easyJet uses “demand pricing”, in which the price shown “is dynamic based on how many people are trying to buy tickets for a flight”.

“So usually the very cheapest point is exactly when flights are launched. Tomorrow, Thursday 21 Match 2024, it’s launching a whole new range of seats, 10 million UK seats for flights.

“If you can pounce when they launch, that is usually the very cheapest time.”

Lewis adds that the flights obviously cover the “crucial Christmas period”, and he uses an example from last year of a woman who tweeted him thanking him and pointing out that the price for a flight to Lanzarote around Christmas was “£215 more expensive” at 8am compared to 6.15am.

The price drop has indeed started on the easyJet website, with flights to Paris available for as little as £24.99 in February 2025, and flights to Amsterdam offered at just £29.99.

It is indeed worth noting that the aforementioned “dynamic pricing” that Lewis claims easyJet use will have come into effect today – using that example of Lanzarote, a one-way flight to the popular Canary Island on 20 December is currently priced at a minimum of £264.99.

EasyJet’s website says that it is offering “ ski flights to top hubs like Geneva, Grenoble and Innsbruck“ as well as “flights to the best Christmas market destinations in Europe - from  Prague , to Vienna, to Krakow and more“.

Lewis explained that he thinks that prices on some routes may get cheaper if there wasn’t a lot of demand when the seats initially became available, but people need to use their intuition.

“If a flight looks expensive, then something has obviously changed.

“This is a bit more art than science.”

Martin Lewis: What You Need to Know About Gap Year Travel Insurance

Gap year travel insurance is an important consideration for anyone planning a gap year abroad. Martin Lewis, the founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, is a leading authority on the subject and has some important advice for those considering taking a gap year.

Gap year travel insurance is designed to cover the costs of medical treatment, repatriation, and other expenses that may arise while travelling abroad. It is important to make sure that the policy you choose covers the activities you plan to do during your gap year, such as extreme sports or volunteering.

Martin Lewis recommends that you shop around for the best deal when it comes to gap year travel insurance. He suggests that you compare policies from different providers to make sure you get the best coverage for the best price. He also recommends that you read the small print carefully to make sure you understand what is and isn’t covered.

Martin Lewis also advises that you check the excess on the policy. This is the amount you will have to pay if you make a claim. He suggests that you look for a policy with a low excess, as this will reduce the amount you have to pay if you make a claim.

Finally, Martin Lewis recommends that you check the duration of the policy. Most policies will cover you for a year, but some may only cover you for a shorter period. Make sure you check this before you buy the policy.

Gap year travel insurance is an important consideration for anyone planning a gap year abroad. Martin Lewis Travel Insurance Advice

Travel insurance from martin lewis reviews, don’t wait to buy travel insurance.

Many people wait until just before they travel to buy holiday insurance however Martin Lewis warns against this. Money Saving Expert advises to book your travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday, so you are covered for events leading to cancellation before you travel. Make sure your holiday insurance suits your requirements

This section of the Money Saving Expert travel insurance guide explains what could be covered in your insurance including:

Medical cover – the cost of being treated abroad and repatriation fees Cancellation cover – if you can’t go on holiday because of redundancy, illness or jury service Baggage and personal belongings – in the event your belongings are lost, stolen or damaged Personal liability – protecting others against accidents you cause whilst on holiday Delays – if your flight has been delayed over a specified number of hours

The amount of cover you get and the excess you’re willing to pay will vary from policy to policy so it’s important to read the terms and conditions carefully.

The guide also covers what isn’t covered by holiday insurance including pre-existing medical conditions, alcohol related injuries, dangerous sporting activities, belongings left unattended, travel to dangerous countries and being refused entry to the country you are visiting.

Finally, this section highlights the difference between European and worldwide travel insurance and warns against being duped into buying upgraded travel insurance if you don’t need it. Be honest about preexisting conditions

travel martin lewis

As with any type of insurance, it’s important to be honest with your insurer as withholding information may invalidate your policy. Martin Lewis therefore advises when arranging holiday insurance to always disclose any preexisting medical conditions you have. Compare annual vs single trip travel insurance

You may think single trip travel insurance may be cheaper however if you think you are going to travel more than once in the year, annual travel insurance may be better. Check if your bank provides travel insurance

As many packaged bank accounts provide travel insurance as part of the service, you may find you are already covered. Therefore, Martin Lewis’ advice is to check before you buy.

travel martin lewis

In addition to buying the right travel insurance to suit your needs and being honest when you apply, Martin Lewis and the Money Saving Expert team provide information on the following hot topics: Martin Lewis on travel insurance after Brexit

Brexit’s impact on Travel insurance and what happens after the 31st December 2020 is still unknown. Lewis states that currently it looks as though there shouldn’t be disruption to transportation or change to flight delay compensation rules however you may have to pay a £6 visa waiver for EU holidays.

In this state of influx, if you’re planning a holiday after Brexit, it’s important to read the terms and conditions of a travel insurance policy before buying it.

Also remember that although the future of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is unknown, you can still use it until the end of this year.

Martin Lewis on cruise travel insurance

Cruise travel insurance is worth considering if you’re heading to the seas. Regular holiday insurance will cover medical fees and loss or damage to your belongings however upgrading to cruise travel insurance ensures you’re also covered for missed departures, changes in itinerary, unused excursions, or cabin confinement due to virus’. Martin Lewis on travel insurance for the over 70s

Martin Lewis’ travel advice to over 65 and 70 year olds is similar to that for younger travelers. Honesty where pre-existing medical conditions are concerned is a must. This may mean you need to get specialist travel cover but at least you know your holiday insurance will be valid.

In addition, Money Saving Expert warns older travelers holidaying with family to compare group and individual holiday insurance. Group travel insurance covers several people under one policy which can save money. However, as the cost of group insurance is usually based on the oldest traveler, separate cover may be cheaper. Martin Lewis on travel moneytravel insurance money saving expert

Martin Lewis provides information and tips on getting the best travel money deals. You can also compare exchange rates with their travel money comparison tool TravelMoneyMax. Lewis advises that the ‘right’ specialist card can be best when chosen wisely but to be aware of credit card or debit card charges.

Money Saving Expert also warn against buying travel money at airports as the exchange rates are some of the worst you can get.

Martin Lewis on Coronavirus travel rights

Coronavirus has brought most of the world to a standstill where travel is concerned. Flights, holidays and events have been cancelled and borders for many countries closed, with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) warning against all non-essential travel.

The situation is changing constantly so Martin Lewis’ best advice for travel during the coronavirus pandemic is to check with the FCO. Does the Money Saving Expert offer travel insurance?

Money Saving Expert offer travel insurance through several different companies, including insurance providers and comparison websites. These include but are not limited to Coverwise, MoneySupermarket, Confused, Gocompare and Compare the Market.

Using online comparison services like Over50choices travel insurance comparison tool gives you the opportunity to check prices with the UKs leading insurers. But in addition to checking the price, as Martin Lewis warns, it’s also essential to check the terms and conditions too.

What are Martin Lewis’ travel insurance top tips?

Money Saving Expert’s top travel insurance tips guide you through all aspects of holiday insurance. From booking your cover through to making a claim, Martin Lewis and his money saving team explain:

When to book your holiday insurance What is covered Pre-existing conditions Annual vs single trip travel insurance Cruise travel insurance Over 70s travel insurance The impacts of Brexit and coronavirus

Why travel to Moscow

Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.

Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.

Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow

It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.

Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022

The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Cheap as Caviar

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

long gray escalator in moscow russia

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

group of people walking in moscow red square at night with christmas lights everywhere

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

While balances were showing as reduced or increased there was no transaction into or from the account visible for some customers. Recent transactions weren't showing at all for an X user who posted just before 8am.

Initial problems with the  Barclays  app and online banking were said to be fixed late on Tuesday evening but issues with payments into and out of accounts and telephone banking were persisting.

Barclays has not said what the cause of the technical difficulty was.

All problems were fixed overnight, the lender said... "We're sorry for any issues you faced.

"We really appreciate your patience while we got things back up and running."

Ideally use a really good quality chicken, rub in olive oil, loads of sea salt and back pepper, prepare a simple cous cous, and then add a few lovely Greek style additions.

We go for pitta bread, falafel, tzatziki, hummus and a nice green salad - perfect for a quick and tasty family meal.

A high street lender has launched a £5,000 deposit mortgage - which could offer 99% loans.

The fee-free deal from Yorkshire Building Society can be used on property valued up to £500,000, although it's not available for new-build properties.

For someone buying a typical first-time buyer property at £200,000, a £5,000 deposit would equate to 2.5% of the purchase price, with the remaining 97.5% being borrowed as a mortgage.

Yorkshire Building Society's director of mortgages Ben Merritt said the deal could encourage a "level playing field for those who don't have financial support from their families to fall back on".

Pre-empting concerns about people borrowing beyond their means, Yorkshire insisted loans would be subject to rigorous credit scoring and affordability checks, and the maximum borrower age at the end of the mortgage term is 70.

Wages have struggled to keep up with soaring house prices in the UK, leaving many would-be first time buyers feeling priced out.

Other lenders have also been making efforts to help people get on the property ladder.

Skipton Building Society offers a "track record" mortgage, which helps renters to make the jump on to the property ladder, potentially with no deposit needed, subject to terms and conditions.

Skipton use borrowers' records of rental payments to help work out what they may be able to borrow.

What should you consider?

Rachel Springall, a finance expert at Moneyfactscompare.co.uk, said the new Yorkshire Building Society deal will likely be popular with those struggling to save a deposit.

"Anyone who borrows at a higher loan-to-value would be wise to overpay their mortgage whenever they can to gain more equity and aim to reach a lower loan-to-value bracket where cheaper deals could be found when they come to refinance," she said.

Ms Springall added that buyers should be conscious of potential hikes to their utility bills or the cost of commuting in the months ahead.

The minimum wage has raised the pay of the UK's lowest earners by £6,000 a year, compared with if their earnings had risen in line with typical wages, according to the left-leaning Resolution Foundation.

The thinktank's analysis suggests the introduction of the policy by Tony Blair's government in 1999 was the "single most successful economic policy in a generation".

It has meant those in the lowest paying jobs have seen real wages rise despite wages stagnating more generally.

The thinktank said minimum wage was first introduced at a time of rising pay inequality, but the share of those stuck in low pay has fallen from 22% in 1999 to just 9% in 2023.

The minimum wage is set for another big increase next week, rising from £10.42 to £11.44.

This marks the third-highest annual change in its history.

For the first time, COVID-19 jabs will be available on the high street.

Boots has become the first major pharmacy to launch a private vaccination service, with at least 50 stores offering the single-dose Pfizer vaccine.

The shot will be available from 1 April for anyone aged 12 or over - but there's a hefty price tag.

The vaccine will be priced at £98.95.

Boots has said it is working to make the vaccine more affordable, but the COVID jabs are more expensive to produce than others.

Some people are still eligible to get a booster vaccine for free on the NHS - including those over 65 or with weakened immune systems due to conditions such as cancer.

The discount supermarket has said it plans to increase its animal welfare standards by allowing more space for its chickens to roam.

Chickens used in its own-label products will have 20% more space than the industry standard, with a maximum density of 30kg per square metre, Lidl said.

The transition will start this summer and should finish by early next year.

The move will provide chickens with more space to roam, which Lidl said "enables them to engage in natural behaviours like stretching their wings, dust bathing and exploring, bolstering both physical and psychological well-being, leading to more fulfilling lives".

Lidl GB chief commercial officer Richard Bourns said: "Animal welfare is a priority for us, and we are dedicated to ensuring all animals within our supply chain lead good lives."

The supermarket was previously criticised by campaign group The Humane League UK, which said it was "very resistant" to making changes on animal welfare.

It had called on Lidl and other supermarkets to sign the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC) - a welfare policy requiring the use of slower-growing breeds, more space, natural light and enrichment, less painful slaughter methods and third-party auditing.

Partners Ocado and M&S appear to have been involved in a tussle for some weeks, but the former has now insisted they are "absolutely aligned".

The retailers have been in a dispute after M&S put its final payment for the joint venture on hold, saying the online grocer partnership had failed to meet key performance targets.

M&S was due to pay £190.7m by August, dependent on the venture's performance against an undisclosed target in the year to November 2023.

Last month, Ocado Group chief executive Tim Steiner said he believed M&S owed a "substantial amount of money" and if a settlement was not agreed it could pursue litigation.

However, Ocado Retail chief executive Hannah Gibson has now insisted conversations are ongoing and it is not impacting day-to-day operations.

Ms Gibson claimed both companies were "working really closely operationally together".

"They were in a board meeting and there were positive conversations and relationships going on focused on what we're doing now to grow and improve the business," she said.

"I think we're all absolutely aligned."

The pound is still in the doldrums. A few years ago, before the EU referendum vote, a pound bought €1.43 - since it's dropped significantly and hasn't recovered much. Last summer it bought €1.14, and today it's hovering around the €1.12 mark. Against the dollar, the rate is just $1.32 - about a decade ago it bought roughly $2.
