Free Erie Canal tours highlight Finger Lakes history (video)

  • July 13, 2022 4:13 PM

Rebecca Swift

Amanda Holchuck is enjoying a cruise along the Erie Canal.   She’s seeing a side of the Finger Lakes she hasn’t before.

“Well it’s the first time I’ve ever seen a heron, a blue heron,” Holchuck said.   “ It’s kind of cool going down the canal.   You learn a lot of different things.”

Boat captain gives Erie Canal history lesson (video)

Things from Captain John Cooper with Finger Lakes Water Tours, who incorporates a history lesson into his tour.

“They started digging the Erie Canal in 1817,” Cooper said.   “ It took eight years to complete.   It was all dug by hand originally, it was four-feet deep and forty feet wide. It was probably one of the biggest pieces of infrastructure ever built. It had such a huge impact on the whole country and people need to learn to appreciate what we have.”

Passengers are appreciating the wildlife along the canal as they coast from Seneca Falls to Geneva.

NYS Canalway Water Trail added to National Recreation Trails System

50-passenger tour boat takes groups along the erie canal.

The man behind these tours, Bob Stivers, owns Finger Lakes Water Adventures and Stivers Seneca Marine, where boaters often take a pit stop.

“We have a 50-passenger tour boat and we’re able to run up and down the canal, through the locks system and out on the lake,” Stivers said.

And for the next eight weeks, you can take this tour for free on Saturdays and Sundays.

Canalway Challenge kicks off along New York’s canals

Free weekend tours through august.

“The New York State Canal Corporation is partnering with the New York State Power Authority and they’re trying to create activities throughout the canal system,” Stivers said.   “ So what they’re doing is   subsidizing the cost of them so the local tourists can go for a ride and no cost to them.”

Holchuck says more people should take advantage of this experience.

“So that we know our history,” Holchuck said.   “ We know why we built these, we know what they’re for and I think that’s important.”

A boatful of excitement awaits!

The Erie Canal is a true engineering marvel, and a trip on this little replica packet boat is a great way to see it in action. But Evan, our guide, made this a top-notch experience. He cheerfully helped everyone settle in, setting us up with drinks and snacks, as we cruised quietly toward Lock 32 -- then took the mic for a fascinating and funny narration of the canal's mechanisms, history, construction, and impact. We even had time to double back and check out the famous Great Embankment, where Evan busted out a ukulele and led us in singing the Erie Canal Song. Low bridge, everybody down!

We were in town visiting family. As the weather was very nice, we decided to visit the Erie Canal on the Sam Patch tour. We effortlessly booked our tickets online with a couple of days' notice. No issue. We did notice the other tours that they provide, namely the wine tasting tour and the sunset tour. Both of those appealed to us but they were booked or only ran on the weekend when we would not be available.

We had a really lovely time on the Sam Patch Tour Boat! The crew was really nice, accommodating and knowledgeable. The boat was small but spacious (I’d recommend sitting up near the bow so you can easily see some of the fun) and the snacks and drink options were good (loved the local beer selections). By far, the best part was going through the Lock! This is something that I never though I’d do, or want to do, but so awesome to be a part of! For the money this tour is totally worth it! I also recommend saving room for gelato after the tour at the spot right where you dock 😎

If you’re looking for the perfect experience for a family trip, this is it. 90 minute cruise that I and my 8 and 10 year old grandchildren loved. The crew directed everyone to the front/bow and to the rear/stern at appropriate times so that they did not miss any of the action on the trip-especially in the lock itself which, they said, was the highlight.

ERIE CANAL SIGHTSEEING CRUISE

Cruise the historic erie canal.

Take a journey through history on the calm waters of the Erie Canal while enjoying the spectacular scenery of New York’s beautiful Mohawk Valley.

Join your United States Coast Guard licensed captain aboard Lil’ Diamond II and enjoy a few entertaining tales of the canal.

The thrill of our voyage is being raised and lowered over 20 feet in an Erie Canal lock!

On this incredibly fun, narrated, 90-minute cruise, learn:

  • Why the Erie Canal was known as Clinton’s ditch.
  • How it was constructed, how it opened our western lands and helped to create the America we know today.
  • How and why it was expanded and why it’s still important to upstate New York culture today.

We’ll take you along the beautiful Mohawk River and into a man-made section known as a “land cut.”

The tour passes:

  • Through massive guard gates
  • The Historic Fort Herkimer Church, which is one of the oldest surviving churches in New York State
  • You’ll also catch a glimpse of some local birds such as green and blue herons and the occasional bald eagle along the Plantation Island Wildlife Management Area.
  • The vessel then enters Lock 18 at Jacksonburg, one of the last remaining locks operating with all of the original 100+-year-old equipment.

As the vessel enters the lock, your captain will fully describe how the lock operates. Then you’ll watch as the gates close behind you and suddenly (but smoothly) the lock house seems to rise in the air as the lock walls creep up along the vessel while it’s being lowered twenty feet. It is certainly an experience not soon forgotten.

This Erie Canal sightseeing cruise is 90 minutes of history, entertainment, education, humor, calm cruising, and pure family fun!

Erie Zoo hosts Free Admission Day to celebrate 2024 season opener

It was a “zoorific” day at the Erie Zoo as they welcomed the public back onto the grounds.

It’s a day over 2,000 Erieites have looked forward to, that’s how many people the Erie Zoo anticipated at their grand reopening celebration on Saturday.

People lined the front gates as early as 7 a.m. to be one of the first to soar into the zoo’s 2024 season.

“The energy of all the guests coming on grounds again is phenomenal and to see the lines and to see the community support for their zoo is amazing,” said Roo Kojancie, president and CEO, Erie Zoo.

Admission was free all day thanks to UPMC Health Plan and local shops, Mighty Fine Donuts and Mill Creek Coffee Company, who provided free breakfast treats.

One man who has been a member for years said he wouldn’t pass on an opportunity to see the animals and the new exhibits being built.

“My daughter is a cheerleader for McDowell, they’re in State College right now for a basketball game,” said George Klapsinos, enjoying Erie Zoo’s grand opening. “We opted not to go to the basketball game but to come to the zoo, so the zoo won this year.”

Zoo lovers tell us they’re most excited for the otter exhibit to open this summer, which will be three times the size of their current enclosure.

“It’s a wonderful day,” said Amy Shaffer, zoo patron. “We plan on buying a family pass, a zoo pass.”

Others said they’re looking forward to the zoo’s many special events.

“I’m most excited for the nice weather and for Zoo Boo coming up,” said Kaylee Wagner, another zoo visitor.

“I think the zoo’s a great resource to Erie,” said Klapsinos. “I’m happy that we have it for a city our size, we’re fortunate to have the zoo. I think everybody should come down to the zoo and support it.”

The next big event at the Erie Zoo is the “Animals are the Artists Sale” which will take place on March 29 and 30.
