Generally, the ships of Carnival Cruise Lines, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, and Royal Caribbean (except Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas) dock at Havensight. Cunard, Princess, Holland America and Oasis and Allure typically dock at Crown Bay. This can change depending on the number of ships in port. Deeper draft ships such as Queen Mary 2, Oasis and Allure are required to dock at Crown Bay.

Our  St Thomas Island Tour  will give you an opportunity to see all of the highlights of this tropical paradise with stops along the way for photo opportunities, and to experience the local culture and learn about the history. Whether you are looking for a small group tour or private tour we can offer an option that will meet the needs of your family or travel group.One great aspect of this tour is that you can choose one of St Thomas’s unique open safari vans, for the fresh air and sunshine, or a 12 seat air conditioned van to stay cool and collected. The choice is yours.

First, you will head out of St Thomas and up a winding mountain road to an elevation of some 1,547 feet above sea level, to a famous location called mountaintop. Awesome views of the British Virgin Islands, and the Atlantic Ocean are what stand out here, as well as being able to see many of the beaches of St Thomas, and St John in the distance. We highly recommend one of the banana daiquiris at this location. Its where they were invented, and they are still as good as the day they were first conceived, some 40 years ago.

From here, your tour continues to Drakes Seat (you guessed it, Sir Francis Drake sat here all those hundreds of years before, enjoying much the same view) to enjoy even more spectacular vistas of Megan’s Bay below, and the mahogany run championship golf course next to the blue waters of the Atlantic.

Then, its off for two hours of relaxing and swimming, at the famous Megans Bay, ranked one of the top 10 most beautiful in the world, according to National Geographic. This distinctive heart shaped cove will indeed steal your heart. Apart from peace, turquoise waters, and natural serenity, you will find convenient showers and changing facilities here too. This beach is rightly one of the most talked about on St.Thomas, and everyone should make at least one visit here to see what all the fuss is about!

Next, you will board your van and head off towards Charlotte Amalie, along the wonderful Skyline Drive, high above the rest of the island, with amazing views of the cruise ships, historical downtown, and neighboring islands.

After all the sightseeing and beaches, its time to round off your day with some serious duty free shopping downtown, and your driver will wait 2 hours for you while you explore the narrow streets and malls and grab all those bargains.

Sven was our tour guide throughout the 5-hour snorkel and kayak excursion. To say that he is the best tour guide a person can ask for is not an exaggeration. He was very knowledgeable of the wildlife in the island, taking any opportunity to teach us about the plants and animals we encountered. He also made the effort to take great underwater pictures of us with the turtles, sting rays, jelly fish and sea eggs that we came across. He is an expert swimmer with a passion for wildlife, free diving, and photography, all of which add to his accolades as a tour guide. Respectful and professional and would absolutely recommend to anyone visiting St. Thomas.

Michelle was amazing! She was incredibly knowledgeable and got us right up next to the sea turtles. She took so many photos that were all really great quality. We very much enjoyed our time with her. It was a very special day.

Turtles and coral guaranteed.

I was pleasantly surprised by how amazing the snorkeling was in St. Thomas. . Our guide Patrick was very knowledgeable about the island and walked us through the flora and fauna, always asking what we were interested in to help tailor the tour. We were with just one other couple which made for a fantastic small group experience.

The turtles were friendly and the fish out in the ocean reef were beautiful. We even saw an octopus, sting ray and reef squid. Highly recommend if you want a little more adventurous of a kayak and snorkel tour as the ocean life keeps it interesting.

The Turtle Tour was great!

We saw turtles, a sting ray, squid, coral reefs and some other tropical fish. Sven was a great tour guide. He gave a lot of information about the turtles and their environment. Highly recommend this tour if you are visiting St. Thomas. We arrived on a cruise and it was a short taxi ride to the resort where you will meet with your tour guide. I had an underwater camera that did capture a lot of pictures but, we also purchased the photo package St. Thomas Adventure Tours offered. They captured a lot of great pictures and video of us as well. Can’t wait to go back! 🙂

Amazing Experience

We had an amazing experience with Sven! He was able to bring us to two beaches and we saw so many sea turtles! He was personable and knowledgeable of the area and even took us on a nature walk around the area to get a better sense of the trees and environment. He brought us to many places along the island and was helpful in so many ways. The lunch was great and he was patient and kind when giving instructions for snorkeling. He even took pictures of the wildlife for us using his GoPro! Overall, we would book again with Sven any time he was incredible!!!

Toured with Connor and he was amazing! He was very knowledgeable about the sea life and we got to see the sea creatures up close including a sting ray, squid, and of course the sea turtles! Connor took great photos as well!

Tuttle snorkel excursion

Did the 2 hour turtle snorkeling tour and had Conner as our tour guide and he was absolutely fantastic! He had so much knowledge about the ocean life and was so much fun to be with. My sisters and I said we’ll definitely come back and to ask for conner to be our tour guide because we just had such a fantastic time. I love that they work with smaller groups, we felt like we got to experience so much more that way!

You need this trip

My husband and I went with tour guide Connor and we were impressed!!! He was on time, brought sandwiches from a local shop (the bread is incredible) and provided us with tons of water. On to the trip, we rode up to the first spot and saw tons of sea turtles and other incredible wildlife. Connor was a wealth of knowledge. He even grabbed a giant conch for us to see and hold! 10/10 recommend that you request Connor as you guide. He even pulled over and picked tamarind for us to try! We’ve done several excursions since we got here and definitely had the highlight of our time in st Thomas during this one!!!

The BEST vacation experience EVER

Our tour guide, Conner, was extremely helpful, friendly, and experienced in our snorkeling adventure. He took us to a secluded beach that was streaming with marine life. Conner taught us about the fish we were seeing, the coral reef, and various see life we were swimming with. We saw a lot of sea turtles (more than I expected). Our photo package was so worth the money and we will keep these visual memories forever.

While most people think of the Virgin Islands as a relaxing paradise (which it is!) many people don’t realize that it’s a haven for adventure-lovers too.

But sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin – that’s why I came up with this list of the best tours in St. Thomas.

Whether you’re on a cruise ship looking for a shore excursion or staying on St. Thomas and looking for a day of fun, this list has something for everyone.

If you are active and relatively fit, then do yourself a favor and take this tour!

While on our honeymoon, I found this tour with Virgin Island Ecotours and this is one of the most memorable things I’ve ever done. It’s a must when planning a St. Thomas itinerary .

Just be prepared – you will be exhausted by the end of the day. They gave us the option to choose single or tandem kayaks and we chose to go with singles.

You start by paddling through mangroves and stingray alley – we didn’t see any here – and then you stop at a small beach where you get out and go see the blowhole by the cliffside. This is one of the coolest places to go kayaking in St. Thomas .

Next you paddle over to Cas Cay where you’ll take a hike and learn more about the local plants. Then it’s lunch time!

We had subs and the hermit crabs surrounded us in droves. For someone who doesn’t like creepy-crawly things, it was a bit nerve-wracking.

The snorkeling part is next. I have never seen so much diversity on a snorkeling tour than on this one. We were right next to the mangroves which is probably why.

We saw tons of fish, lobster, sea urchins, a barracuda, sea worm (I think?), and a stingray partially buried on the ocean floor. It was amazing!

The paddle back was the worst part because at that point I was pretty tired and it felt like we were going into the wind.

They take pictures throughout the tour to encourage you not to bring your phone and you have the opportunity to buy them at the end.

They show you a slideshow when you get back and it definitely makes you want to buy them! Like I said, I can’t recommend this one enough. It was one of the best snorkeling tours in St. Thomas we’ve ever taken.

2. Turtle Cove Catamaran Snorkel & Sail Adventure

While I haven’t taken the snorkel tour with The VI Cat, I have taken a sunset sail with them and it was one of my favorite things to do in St. Thomas .

The crew was very professional and we had a great time so I can only imagine that their snorkeling tour would be fantastic as well!

On this tour, you’ll head over to Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge from the marina at Marriott’s Frenchman’s Cove. The whole tour will last about three hours and you’ll be on a 54-foot catamaran.

They provide snacks and drinks after this St. Thomas snorkeling tour on the way back to the island. You also get a fun pirate tattoo at the end!

3. The Baths and White Bay (British Virgin Islands)

This is one of my all-time favorite St. Thomas tours!

Two companies that I have gone with are New Horizons & Breakaway Charters – though it looks like they are no longer running this tour – and Stormy Pirates . I would highly recommend either company.

You will have to bring your passport if you want to go on this excursion. It’s a super fun addition to your vacation!

The first stop on the trip is Baths National Park in Virgin Gorda. Here you’ll find beautiful views on a hike down to the beach with incredible rock formations surrounding you on your way down.

Once you make it to the beach there’s a little bar and you get to spend about half an hour here enjoying the view and wading in the ocean among the towering boulders.

A taxi will take you back to your boat and then you’ll head to White Bay on Jost Van Dyke. White Bay is known for the Soggy Dollar Bar which is named because your dollars may literally be soggy.

There are no docks at the bay so the boats anchor near the beach and you have to swim to land. Most captains will hand around a dry bag so you don’t have to jump in with your wallet in your pocket unless you want the full experience.

On the way back to Red Hook you do have to stop at Cruz Bay in St. John to go through Customs. It’s a very simple process.

This is one of the best St. Thomas boat tours that I’ve ever been on so if you can swing it, I highly recommend taking the tour.

Snorkel & Swim with Turtles

What to Bring on St. Thomas Tours

Most tours don’t include gratuity in their price, and you’ll want to show your appreciation for your guide. Tipping guidelines are generally 10-20% of the price of the tour. Cash is often best. 

If there are multiple guides, they usually share the tips so you can give it to the captain or the person in charge. 

It’s hot and sunny in the USVI, you’ll want plenty of sunscreen. By law, you’ll need reef-safe sunscreen. It will be less purchased at home. Get a good sized bottle and pack it in your suitcase. 

I also recommend an SPF of at least 50 and a formula designed to stay on in the water. You’ll be outside for long periods of time, and often in the ocean. The last thing you want is a bad sunburn on your trip. 

Waterproof Phone Case or Dry Bag

Getting on and off boats, plus just being near water means your personal items are at risk of becoming wet.

I’ve seen a bag fall into the water while being loaded on a boat. Spend a little money on a good dry bag to protect your items. 

A waterproof case for your phone can be a lifesaver. Phones have a habit of falling out of pockets at the worst moments. Plus, if you want to hang onto it while paddleboarding or kayaking, it needs to be protected.

Sunscreen for our body, hat for your head. A hat will keep the sun out of your eyes, protect the top of your head from sunburn, and keep your hair from getting tangled from wind. 

I like a hat with a wide brim that provides protection to the back of my neck too. 

Motion Sickness Medication

Even if you’re not prone to motion sickness in a car, boats are a different beast. Being sick on a boat can ruin your trip.

You can try ginger candy or sea bands for mild nausea, but you may need a patch or meclizine for more bothersome symptoms. Meclizine is sold under the brand name Bonine. 

Since some of the medications may cause drowsiness, read the label, and talk to your doctor before you leave on your vacation. 

Adventure Camera

St. Thomas is one of the prettiest places I’ve ever visited, and you’ll want plenty of photos to remember your adventures. A GoPro or other adventure camera is the best way to record your fun without risking your phone. 

Make sure to purchase one that is waterproof or comes with a waterproof case.

FAQs About St. Thomas Excursions

Do you need to book an excursion in st. thomas.

You don’t necessarily need to book a tour in St. Thomas. There is plenty of shopping near the harbor or you can walk through Charlotte Amalie. You can even take a taxi to one of the beaches if you would rather stay on the beach for the day.

However, if you want to snorkel, get out on a boat, learn more history of the USVI, or visit other islands, then a tour would be in your bets interest.

Where do cruise ships dock in St. Thomas?

There are two docks for cruise ships in St. Thomas – Havensight and Crown Bay. Havensight is where you’ll find most luxury shopping and there are also restaurants and other boutiques. Taxis are plentiful here. You can walk to downtown Charlotte Amalie but it’s a bit far.

Crown Bay is less developed and the walk is even longer into town so it’s recommended to take a taxi.

Is snorkeling good in St. Thomas?

Snorkeling is a great way to explore the Caribbean waters around St. Thomas. The islands are filled with vibrant marine life and coral reefs, perfect for snorkelers of all skill levels.

With crystal clear waters, you can usually spot fish, turtles, eels, and other aquatic creatures without getting too deep.
