Information
Words from the Penitential Act - Form C
Music by Manoling Francisco, SJ Arrangement by Palan Reyes Featuring Fr. Art Borja, SJ
The "Kyrie" is sung antiphonally between the presider/deacon and the congregation. While the invocations are in English, the dialogical responses are in Greek, "Kyrie, eleison" and "Christe, eleison" . This plaintive Kyrie, sung with the priest or cantor, underscores our need for God, who, to ransom a slave, gave away his Son.

The Kyrie translates into English as follows:
Kyrie eleison; Lord, have mercy; Christe eleison; Christ, have mercy; Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy.
This ritual song dates from early Greek (Eastern) Christian liturgies and has retained its Greek text in the Latin (Western) rite. In the Eastern tradition the Kyrie is still used in its initial capacity, as a response in litanies. By the end of the eighth century in the Roman (Western) church, the Kyrie was used as a separate song, often in a nine-fold form–a three-time repetition of its three lines, in which the priest uttered the first line, the congregation or (more likely) a choir responded with the second, and the priest responded with the third. The Kyrie became part of the Ordinary (the unvarying parts) of the Roman Catholic Mass, chanted at the very beginning of the service.
Some liturgies of the Reformation continued to use the Kyrie in connection with confession of sin or with the reading of the Ten Commandments. Like other ancient biblical and liturgical expressions (such as "amen," "alleluia," "hosanna," "maranatha"), the Kvrie is a prayer that ties us to Christians from all times and places.
Liturgical Use: As a sung prayer for mercy in the service of confession and forgiveness; as part of a litany, sung after each petition (as in the oldest traditions); as a frame around spoken prayers.

Kyrie Eleison (Lord Have Mercy)
Kyrie Eleison Lyrics
Kyrie Eleison translates into English as follows:
Kyrie Eleison; Lord, have mercy; Christe Eleison; Christ, have mercy; Kyrie Eleison. Lord, have mercy.
This hymn is a shortened version of the Jesus Prayer , "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner."
The Story Behind Kyrie Eleison (Lord Have Mercy)
According to Hymnary.org ,
"This ritual song dates from early Greek (Eastern) Christian liturgies and has retained its Greek text in the Latin (Western) rite. In the Eastern tradition, the Kyrie is still used in its initial capacity to respond in litanies. By the end of the eighth century in the Roman (Western) church, the Kyrie was used as a separate song, often in a nine-fold form–a three-time repetition of its three lines, in which the priest uttered the first line, the congregation or (more likely) a choir responded with the second, and the priest responded with the third. The Kyrie became part of the Ordinary (the unvarying parts) of the Roman Catholic Mass, chanted at the very beginning of the service."
Kyrie Eleison in the Bible
In the New Testament, the Greek phrase occurs three times in Matthew:
Matthew 15:22: the Canaanite woman cries out to Jesus, " Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David. " (Ἐλέησόν με κύριε υἱὲ Δαβίδ)
Matthew 17:15: " Lord, have mercy on my son " (Κύριε ἐλέησόν μου τὸν υἱόν)
Matthew 20:30: two unnamed blind men call out to Jesus, " Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David. " (Ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς κύριε υἱὸς Δαβίδ)
In the Parable of the Publican and the Pharisee (Luke 18:9-14), the tax collector who cries out, " Lord have mercy on me, a sinner, " is compared with the self-righteous Pharisee who believes he does not need forgiveness.
We must be aware of our thoughts so that we no longer live as prisoners to our own negative thinking.

Pope Francis to visit 4 nations across Asia and Oceania in September
By Devin Watkins
The Holy See Press Office announced on Friday that Pope Francis will visit three nations in Asia and one in Oceania in early September.
He accepted the invitation of the Heads of State and local Church authorities to make what will be his 45th Apostolic Journey abroad.
The Pope is scheduled to depart Rome on September 2 and return on September 13.
He travels first to Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, where he will land on September 3 and remain until September 6.
Pope Francis will then fly east to visit Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, and Vanimo on September 6-9.
His next stop will be in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, on September 9-11.
From there, the Pope will travel to Singapore for a 3-day visit on September 11-13.
According to the Holy See Press Office, the full programme of his Apostolic Journey will be published at a later date.
Local Catholic population
Pope Francis first mentioned the possibility of traveling to the region in December 2023.
In an interview with the Mexican broadcaster N+, he said he hoped to travel to “Polynesia” in August and to his native Argentina later in the year.
Then, in January 2024, the Pope told an interviewer with the Italian newspaper La Stampa that he would visit Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia.
Indonesia is the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, and Catholics number over 8 million, or 3.1 percent of the population.
Around 32 percent of Papua New Guinea’s population are Catholic, numbering around 2 million.
Timor-Leste is overwhelmingly Catholic, accounting for around 96 percent of the population, counting over 1 million people.
Some 395,000 Catholics live in Singapore, representing around 3 percent of the population.

Source: Texas Longhorns Remain 'Excited' for Jordan Pope Visit After Busy Day in Transfer Portal
The Texas Longhorns are hosting Oregon State transfer Jordan Pope for a visit on Tuesday.
- Author: Zach Dimmitt
In this story:
AUSTIN -- A source tells LonghornsCountry.com that the Texas Longhorns remain "excited" to host Oregon State transfer guard Jordan Pope for his visit on Tuesday even after the team landed a trio of commitments from the portal on Sunday.
I’m hearing the Texas Longhorns remain “excited” to get Oregon State transfer Jordan Pope here for his Tuesday visit. Mutual interest appears strong even with today’s 3 commitments. pic.twitter.com/38GQTQBlG7 — Zach Dimmitt (@ZachDimmitt7) April 15, 2024
Texas landed Indiana State transfers Jayson Kent and Julian Larry along with a surprise commitment from Arkansas transfer and former Houston Cougar, Tramon Mark. Adding these three to the backcourt doesn't look like it's having a negative impact on the strong mutual interest between Pope and Texas.
February 22, 2024; Berkeley, California, USA; Oregon State Beavers guard Jordan Pope (0)
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports
The Longhorns will be battling with the rival Texas A&M Aggies for Pope, who are hosting him for a visit in College Station on Thursday. Texas fans will be hoping that Pope won't leave Austin until he commits to the 'Horns, meaning Rodney Terry, Frank Haith and staff will have to continue working their magic this week. Of course, expecting an immediate commitment is optimistic thinking, as Buzz Williams and the Aggies will likely still get their chance to pitch to Pope as well.
Pope, an Oakley, Calif. native, has played the past two seasons at Oregon State. He's started 63 of 64 games in his college career while playing 34.6 minutes averaging 15.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists. Though the Beavers have struggled the past two seasons, he's had some big-time performances and moments. This past season, he hit a game-winning fadeaway triple at the buzzer to shock then-No. 9 Arizona in an 83-80 win in January. Pope scored 30 points in the victory and failed to reach double figures in just one game the entire season.
