The best portable monitor overall

1. Asus ZenScreen OLED MQ13AH

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

There are many things about the Asus ZenScreen OLED MQ13AH that makes it a worthy top recommendation if you’re seeking a portable monitor for productivity and casual use. It’s a bit on the small side, but at least that means it’s the perfect size of that 1080p resolution. And its 1.08-pound weight means that you’ll hardly feel it in your backpack when traveling or commuting.

In terms of performance, you’ll be hard-pressed to complain. It’s got 100% DCI-P3 color gamut and a color accuracy of Delta E < 2, delivering excellent color performance. It also has a bright panel, topping at 360 nits, so you won’t have to squint through your eight-hour workday – although we wish the display itself isn’t so glossy and prone to annoying reflections.

The only complaint we have about its design is that its stand, which moonlights as its case, isn’t the most convenient to use. Hardly a big deal, if it wasn’t for the fact that it’s also not the cheapest option.

The best budget portable monitor

2. ViewSonic VA1655

Though a little slim on special features – it has a built-in stand, of course, and for travel purposes, it comes with its own travel case. It also has portrait mode for reading documents and coding, as well as two 0.8W speakers, but that’s about it. However, if you don’t really need anything fancy, it’s the best one out of all the budget portable monitors you’ll see on Amazon . 

This 15.6-inch 1080p display is a little dim, with its brightness topping at 250 nits, but it has two USB-C ports, one of which has 60W power delivery (plus a mini HDMI). It’s also very light, one of the lightest options on here, coming in at only 1.5 lbs – an advantage if you’re a digital nomad on an extended trip around the world.

We’re still working on testing and reviewing this display, but ViewSonic’s budget monitors haven’t failed us yet, and this one is also very highly reviewed by verified customers on Amazon.

The best portable monitor for gaming

3. Asus ROG Strix XG16AHPE

There aren’t a lot of portable monitors geared towards gamers. Luckily, Asus has us covered with its line of ROG portable gaming monitors. There’s a few of them worth looking at, but if you want the best, we suggest going for the Asus ROG Strix XG16AHPE, which we’ve gamed on ourselves (although we are still working on a review for it).

This 15.6-inch version comes with a versatile built-in kickstand that gives users the option to switch from landscape to portrait mode, which comes in handy if you’re also a coder. Though only a 1080p panel, it does come with a 144Hz refresh rate, which makes it ideal for fast-paced titles, as well as Nvidia G-Sync support.

There is a built-in battery, which also makes this a worthy proposition if that’s important to you, but it’s small and only gives you up to two hours of use (less if you’re gaming). There are speakers built-in as well, though you’d want to rely on a gaming headset instead.

4. LG Gram +view 16MR70

If you’re a MacBook user who is a photographer, videographer, or graphic designer by trade, we recommend checking out our best portable monitor for creatives suggestion further down this list. However, if you’re more of a business or productivity power user needing to extend your MacBook’s display, then the LG Gram +view 16MR70 is the ideal choice.

The LG Gram line is known for its super-lightweight nature, and you can expect the same from this portable monitor, sitting at only 1.45 pounds for a 16-inch display. It’s, in fact, lighter than many of the smaller options on this list. Naturally, it works beautifully with the MacBooks, especially with its two USB-C ports. And while its color accuracy isn’t anything to write home about, it does offer DCI-P3 99% color gamut, which is a nice concession.

While we have yet to get our hands on this display for a proper review, which we plan on doing soon, it’s been positively received by Amazon customers. It’s currently enjoying a 3.4 out of 5 rating, with some reviewers declaring it an impressive portable monitor despite its minor flaws.

The best 4K portable monitor

5. UPerfect True 4K

What makes the UPerfect True 4K portable monitor such a must for those seeking 4K in a portable package is its blinding 600 nits of brightness to go along with that UHD resolution. While the HDR support is not Vesa-certified, its 1500:1 and 100% Adobe RGB more than make up for it, providing a vibrant and dynamic image.

If only you didn’t have to reset the brightness every time the screen is manually powered off. It’s a minor quibble, but considering how much power this screen takes – you’ll need somewhat powerful hardware to make use of that higher resolution – and the fact that your laptop is as likely to be on battery power than not, it is worth noting.

The other minor issue is its cover, which also functions as its stand. As a cover, it’s fine. But, as a stand, it can sometimes be a little flimsy, a regular issue with portable monitors. That said, at least there are more than enough ports on hand.

6. Asus ProArt Display PA148CTV

Content creators who often travel for work don’t always have the convenience of having access to a screen real estate big enough for a comfortable creative workflow. Luckily, some manufacturers have seen to it that they too have options in the portable monitor scene, and the Asus ProArt Display PA148CTV may be the best one we’ve seen and tested.

Though we haven’t done the review on it just yet, one of our Computing editors has had a proper hands-on experience with the monitor, and it truly delivers in color coverage and color accuracy. With 100% sRGB and 100% Rec. 709 color gamut, as well as Calman verified color accuracy, this is truly better for video and photo editing than all others on this list. That’s without mentioning its other features that simplify your workflow.

First is its touchscreen capability, which allows you to make adjustments to your work directly onto the screen. Then there’s the built-in integrated dial you’ll find in the rear of the monitor. It works seamlessly with several Adobe editing software, allowing you to fine-tune your work while minimizing your use of the trackpad or mouse.

7. Asus ZenScreen Go MB16AP

You might not feel comfortable with spending quite the asking price of the Asus ZenScreen Go MB16AP since it is pretty pricey. However, that’s probably the biggest strike against it. Outside of that and the fact that it is a bit on the chunky side, there’s much more to love than not.

While we haven’t reviewed it here at TechRadar just yet, one of our Computing editors has already put this display through its paces, and it truly does deserve to be on every top portable monitors list. To start, it comes with a built-in battery that can last up to three and a half hours on a single charge. That alone is pretty impressive. But, it also comes with wireless connectivity, though it only functions through screen mirroring.

As far as the panel itself goes, it’s not right for any serious photo or video editing but good for productivity work with a 1080p resolution and bright enough 220 nits. Colors look good for most regular work as well as streaming. But, the star of the show here is not the screen but the features, especially the battery, making this perfect for the digital nomad who needs extra screen real estate.

8. The Portable Monitor Flex 14

Our expert review:

If one extra screen is good, two must be better - and that’s where a fold-out portable monitor like the Flex 14 comes in. A versatile device powered by a single cable, you can set both  14-inch 1080p dual-screen portable monitors flanking your laptop. But you can also use a single display in landscape or portrait mode, or in a triangle formation for teams.. 

Given its weight, this is more suited for when you’re working from home or hot-desking in the office than using on the commute. In our hands-on testing, we found the build quality felt solid, the aluminium providing real stability, and overall flexibility was very welcome. Set-up was fast and simple, and performance was good. Images were clear and crisp, with good control over settings. 

Color space coverage is only 72% sRGB - so the focus here is on expanding your screen real-estate over color-accuracy for content creators. If you use a laptop that’s between 11in and 18in and need a three-screen set-up for meetings and multitasking, this is a very flexible option.

The best 17-inch portable monitor

9. Intehill 4K

This 17.3-inch 4K model from Intehill is a bit of a unicorn as there just aren’t a lot of portable monitors at this size with this resolution. Thankfully, it’s also a good looking one. Just be aware that you’ll have to spend a hefty sum for this larger display as well as buy a PSU separately, that is unless you have a Thunderbolt port which can fully power it.

While we found its backlighting to be somewhat center-focused during our testing, the color coverage is good for most with 100% Adobe RGB and 93% DCI-P3. HDR is on offer as well though its 400 nits is not quite bright enough for strong results – not to mention that it didn’t quite hit its advertised peak brightness when tested.

Back on the plus side, there’s plenty of connectivity on hand with the ability to use either USB-C, mini-DisplayPort, or a full-fledged HDMI port. The Intehill 17.3-inch Portable 4K monitor also comes with Vesa mounts as well as a smart case that doubles as a stand.

The best affordable OLED portable monitor

10. Innocn 15A1F

Graphic designers and videographers may want to look elsewhere. But, for everyone else interested in a portable OLED monitor and on a budget, the Innocn 15A1F should be in the running. 

That might seem strange considering that the colors here are pretty spectacular. When tested, we found the monitor to have a fairly wide color gamut to the tune of 176.3% sRGB and 124.9% of DCI P3. Plus, OLED panels offer a very consistent image across all sections. All this makes for a vivid display. However, it is held back for professional work somewhat by its 1080p resolution at 15.6 inches. And, it doesn’t quite have the brightness to fully take advantage of true HDR. That said, it still looks great.

And, while it doesn’t come with a carrying case – you’ll have to get one separately to keep the monitor from getting scratched up – it is well built and comes with a magnetically attached support foot that solves the problem that we find with a lot of portable screens by keeping it steady on its feet. We also appreciated the inclusion of both USB-C and Mini HDMI connectivity.

How to choose the best portable monitor for you

Choosing portable monitor hinges on your use case and to what device you are connecting. The very concept of a portable monitor makes the most sense with a USB-C-equipped laptop.

That’s the most reliable way to connect a portable monitor and ensures both compatibility and plenty of bandwidth for any resolution a portable monitor is likely to offer. That said, many mobile screens also support old-school USB-A connectivity. Just be aware that it will require software and drivers, which could present a problem depending on your device to drive the display.

For most mainstream Windows PCs, that should be fine. For everything else, it could be more problematic. Running over USB-A can also limit resolution and color fidelity due to lower bandwidth. That said, some portable monitors support micro HDMI and even VGA.

Speaking of bandwidth and resolution, most portable monitors are 15.6-inch panels with a 1080p resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. But more compact models with 11-inch screens are available.

Battery or no battery is another critical question. You can get portable screens both with and without. Screens without a battery are cheaper and lighter. However, if you’re using a mobile screen away from the mains, they will drain your laptop’s battery pretty fast.

The final significant factor is brightness. If you plan to use your portable display outside, you want as much of that as humanly possible. Most are limited, only topping out at a little over 200 nits. Aim for the brightest you can get while considering that more glowing screens will use up even more battery when powered by your laptop.

How we test the best portable monitors

When it comes to testing the best portable monitors, we evaluated the displays across many aspects, starting with how premium the design and build felt, how lightweight the monitor was, the screen size, and whether it offered full HD or 4K resolution. 

We considered how many types of connections (USB-C, USB-A, VGA, etc.) the monitors supported and the number of connectivity ports they had. We looked at the display brightness and the viewing angle width. 

Importantly, we assessed how minimal the latency was and how good the display looked, in terms of the color accuracy and saturation. We also analyzed how ergonomic the monitor stand/cover was and what type of user the monitor would be best suited for.

What is the best portable monitor?

We chose the Duex Plus monitor on the strength of its ultra-lightweight form factor, easy UI, and clear display.

Size: It is critical that you find not only the best portable monitor for the type of computer you have but also one for the type of computer size that you have. Most portable monitors range from 13 inches to 16 inches, but you can find some models available outside that range.  

Display : One of the most important things to consider is the quality of your display, such as the resolution that determines how sharp and focused your picture will be. Be sure to also check specs for brightness and color to ensure that you have the best computer display possible. 

Construction: Durability is a must when you are taking your portable monitor on the go with you. Look at the materials used to construct each portable monitor so you can be sure that your new monitor will be able to withstand regular travel.

Power: Most portable monitors are battery-powered, but models are increasingly converting to USB charging for easier, more convenient charging on the go. Check your computer to see what kind of ports are available before matching a portable monitor to your computer or laptop.

Price: The cost of portable monitors can vary significantly, ranging from a couple hundred to a thousand or more. We found that the best portable monitors are rather affordable, ranging in cost from $270 to $470, respectively. 

What is a portable monitor?

These small-form screens connect to laptops, tablets, and game consoles via mini HDMI or USB-C cables for fast, consistent video playback as well as power for the monitor. Some portable monitors even have integrated batteries for use without power over USB-C; and while their battery lives are on the short side (about three or four hours at most), they're a great option for mobile professionals who can't always be near a wall outlet for a typical desktop monitor or need USB-C connections.

What screen sizes do portable monitors come in?

Portable monitors will consistently have much less real estate than their desktop counterparts , but you still have a variety of options when it comes to display size. Most screens will be somewhere between 14 and 17 inches, making them similar to a typical laptop display and therefore perfect for mobile professionals or anyone who doesn't have a lot of desk space. 

However, there are a few, like the Asus ProArt PQ22UC, that are closer to 22 inches, making them better suited for creative professionals and digital artists who may need more room to edit photos and video or create digital drawings and paintings.

Why should I get a portable monitor?

Portable monitors are great for anyone who may need extra screen space while working on the go or while using a smaller-than-average work desk. Since these mobile screens are about the same size as a laptop or tablet display, they're great for slipping into a laptop bag for when you're meeting an off-site client to go over project details or finishing up a presentation on your business flight. 

They can also be great for mobile console or PC gaming, as long as you choose a portable monitor with a high enough refresh rate to provide smooth playback away from home.

Do portable monitors have batteries?

The iPhone 15 supports eight eSIM cards or more making it convenient for travelers who need to use a temporary local eSIM in addition to their regular one. 

On the Android side, we recommend the Samsung Galaxy S23 , a fundamentally excellent phone. It has a long battery life, water- and dust resistance and four cameras. Although flip phones aren't necessarily the ideal choice for traveling (due to subpar durability and cameras), if you're dead set on taking one along with you, then bring along Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 5. Flip phones definitely win in the portability category. If that's your main consideration and if you're not fussed about taking the best possible photos for instance, the supremely portable and lightweight Galaxy Z Flip 5 could be a good option. At $1,000 it doesn't come cheap, so make sure to get a case before you venture off into a new locale.

How to buy a new travel phone

Look for local SIM and eSIM cards: Some countries might not have a roaming agreement with your carrier, in which case opt for buying a local SIM card or eSIM. Check with your carrier before you travel and look into what's offered at your destination.

Consider last year's models: When a new phone gets launched, stores and carriers discount their older phones to sell off existing stock.

Buy a case and screen protector:  Phones sold today are more durable than ones from even a few years ago. It's a good idea to protect your phone with a case when you travel because if you damage it, you might not have any option to get it repaired quickly.

How we test phones

We test every phone in real-world scenarios, focusing on its features, design, performance, cameras, battery life and overall value. We document our findings in an initial review that is periodically updated when there are new software updates, or to compare it against new phones from competitors such as Apple, Samsung, Google and OnePlus.

Photography 

Photography is a major focus for most phones these days, so we take pictures and videos of various subjects in a variety of settings and lighting scenarios. We try out any new camera modes, such as Action mode that debuted with the iPhone 14 line, or the Unblur photo tool that launched with the Google Pixel 7 series.

Battery life 

Battery testing is conducted in a variety of ways. We assess how long a phone lasts during a typical day of use and note how it performs during more focused sessions of video calls, media streaming and gaming. We also conduct a video playback test, as a simple, replicable measure of pure battery life, which isn't always included in the initial review but sometimes added later in an update.

Emergency SOS might be one of the most important features to come out on any phone this year.

Performance measuring 

We use benchmarking apps to measure each phone's performance, alongside our own anecdotal experiences using the phone for our review. Of note are how graphics and animations look. Are they smooth? Or do they lag or stutter? We also look at how quickly the phone switches between horizontal and vertical orientations, and how fast the camera app opens and is ready to take a photo.

We perform processor-heavy tasks like editing photos, exporting videos and playing games. We evaluate whether a newer version of a particular phone includes enough features to make it worth upgrading from older models.

If you work in an office (or a home office ), you’re probably familiar with external monitors . But there’s an intriguing alternative that we’ve been seeing all over TikTok lately: portable monitors. These lightweight monitors are plug-and-play, so you can instantly connect your device, and require only one cable to use, thanks to USB-C ports that can transfer data and provide power at the same time. And since USB-C is becoming standard on new devices, portable monitors can be used with a wide range of devices beyond laptops, from smartphones to gaming consoles to tablets . That means with a portable monitor, you can bring a bigger screen anywhere.

There are still some technical advantages to standard monitors, which often provide better luminosity and refresh rates than their portable counterparts. However, those factors aren’t “really relevant for someone just wanting something basic for working at home,” says Sam Byford , formerly an editor at our sister site the Verge . For many people, it is worth a slight step down in image quality to be able to easily store their monitor away when they don’t need it or toss it in a bag to bring to a café, on a trip, or simply to another room. To help you find the best portable monitor, I conducted my own testing and consulted six experts on their favorites.

What we’re looking for

Size and portability.

If a portable monitor feels like a brick or doesn’t fit in your bag, it’s not worth using. Portable monitors are designed to be very lightweight. Most of the options below weigh less than two pounds, with the lightest weighing 1.3 pounds and the heaviest weighing 2.2 pounds. They are also thin and sleek, measuring under an inch thick in most cases. They usually come with foldable cases that can also be used as a monitor stand (similar to what you might see on  Apple’s iPad cases ). The cases tend to allow for multiple viewing angles, and the case also protects the screen from scratches or abrasions while in transit.

Most portable monitor screens measure between 12 and 17 inches diagonally — about the size of a standard sheet of letter paper on the smaller end of that range. If you’re using your portable monitor for light tasks and simple web browsing, anything larger than 17 inches can feel like overkill and be clunky to carry, and you may be better off investing in a larger, stationary monitor.

Screen resolution

If you’re mostly scrolling through the web, working in Google docs, taking a peek at some spreadsheets, or watching videos, 1080p HD resolution should be perfectly adequate for a portable monitor. There are ultrahigh-definition 4K portable monitors available, but the higher resolution won’t be as noticeable on their smaller screens.

Byford also recommends finding a monitor with an IPS, or in-plane-switching panel, which will give you a clearer image and improved response time. Without an IPS, you might see a slight lag between your device and the display. And Miguel Melendez, a PC expert at B&H Photo Video, says, “IPS also offers the widest viewing angles and best color accuracy.”

Power and ports

Some portable monitors have internal batteries, which means they have their own power source. Other portable monitors draw power from the device they are connecting to through a USB-C port. Monitors that are device-powered will help to streamline the number of chargers you need for your setup. But having an internal battery means you won’t have to rely on your laptop or tablet for power, which could inconveniently drain your battery. Though having an internal battery will make your monitor a bit heavier, it will also maximize the time you can use both your monitor and the device it’s connected to while on the go. It may even be able to charge that device.

Portable monitors usually connect via a USB-C port, which is now standard across newer devices, including Android phones and tablets, Apple MacBooks and iPads, and Windows-based laptops and tablets. You can also connect an iPhone using a  USB-C-to-lightning cable . Some portable monitors have an HDMI port, which will be useful if you want to connect to a digital camera or television. A few monitors even have an integrated speaker, which may be worth looking for if you’re going to be using the monitor for gaming or streaming. However, without speakers you’ll still be able to get audio from your device or use headphones.

Best portable monitor overall

Size and portability: 1.3 pounds, stand included | Screen resolution:  14” IPS screen, 1080p resolution | Power and ports: Device-powered, USB-C port, integrated speaker

“The big promise of USB-C for monitors appears to be finally arriving,” writes the Verge senior editor Tom Warren in his in-depth review of the Lenovo M14. This 1080p 14-inch display weighs only 1.3 pounds — making it the lightest monitor on this list — and comes with a protective cover. There’s no battery, which Warren says “means your laptop, tablet, or even phone is tasked with powering the display” via the included USB-C cable. The Lenovo also supports pass-through charging, so you can charge your device and power the monitor at the same time. “Lenovo has built most of the components into the base, which feels sturdy,” Warren writes. He also likes how the stand offers the ability “to raise the height of the monitor to better bring it in line with your laptop, which is a nice extra option.” The Lenovo also has a low-blue-light setting to reduce eye fatigue.

Best dual-orientation portable monitor

Portable monitors are “easy to set up and small enough to move to the side for extra desk space,” says TonyTechBytes , a TikTok creator who often clears off his desktop build PCs. At 1.76 pounds, the 15.6-inch, 1080p monitor is slightly heavier than the Lenovo, but Tony says the extra weight doesn’t bother him. The Z1 can be used in either landscape or portrait mode, so if you want to scroll vertically on Twitter and then view a lot of data horizontally on a spreadsheet, just rotate the screen. It has two built-in speakers, a USB-C port, a mini-HDMI port (a smaller version of the traditional HDMI port, used to save space on smaller gadgets), and it comes with both a USB-C-to-USB-C cable and a mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable as well as a USB-C-to-USB-A cable for maximum versatility. “With its USB-C connectivity,” says Tony, “I can easily plug it into my smartphone and have a larger screen on the go.” The Lepow’s screen also has “eye-care protection,” which is supposed to help prevent eye fatigue.

Grace Kim , a TikTok tech creator, has been using her Z1-Gamut for about a month. “The setup process was super-simple; it connects to my laptop through HDMI,” she says, and it also has a USB-C port if you prefer to connect that way. (Like the Lepow monitor above, the Z1 comes with both a USB-C-to-USB-C cable and a mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable as well as a USB-C-to-USB-A cable.) The AOC has a built-in battery that can last up to four hours and can also charge your smartphone or tablet. That battery contributes to its 2.2-pound overall weight — making it the heaviest option on this list — but if you don’t mind a little extra heft, having a monitor that is self-sufficiently powered can be very convenient if you’ll be using it far from an outlet. It also has internal speakers and a micro-HDMI port (which functions similarly to a mini HDMI port; though the monitor comes with a USB-C-to-USB-C/A cable, if you want to use the micro-HDMI port, you’ll need to supply your own cable). But where the AOC really stands out with its touch-compatible screen. For example, if you connect a touchscreen tablet via USB-C, you can also use the AOC as a touchscreen.

Although a portable monitor with a 1080p resolution (like those listed above) is perfectly fine for editing documents and sending out a few emails, you may want a higher resolution for things like photo or video editing on the go. We recently tested the NexPad, using it as a second display for getting work done, and found that it’s big enough to show a good amount of information onscreen while being light and compact enough to fit in a backpack and accompany you to a coffee shop. It has a 12-inch multi-touch display with 1080p resolution, a mini HDMI port, and two USB-C ports on the left of the display, with an additional USB-C port on the right side. It also comes with a kickstand that you can use to prop the display up at nearly any angle, and there’s even a mode to attach the NexPad above your laptop’s screen to bring it closer to eye level, though that requires an additional magnet to be attached to your laptop’s display and may put some strain on the device’s hinge.

In this post, Dave Dean from Too Many Adapters shares his best tips and advice on how to pick the best smartphone for when you travel.

As a travel tech writer, I get asked about using smartphones for travel all the time. The minute we head overseas with our phones, we’re hit with a confusing mess of technical jargon, expensive roaming agreements, conflicting advice, and nonworking gear. Trying to discuss the nuances of GSM frequency bands or iPhone unlock codes with a mobile vendor in a dusty Cambodian town isn’t my idea of fun, and I doubt it’s yours either.

Since we all want our smartphones to work when we travel, I’ve put together this guide covering everything you need to know to get your smartphone working overseas — as well as the best smartphones for travel. It’s detailed, but not too complicated, and will save you money, time, and plenty of frustration!

Traveling with a Smartphone: Tips and Advice

This is an inexpensive way to stay connected with phone and data service while you travel. The downside is that you’ll have to change SIM cards every time you change countries, so you may end up carrying a stack of SIM cards around the world with you (though I like being reminded of all the places I’ve been!).

Here are some other tips for using your phone:

1. Only use Wi-Fi when possible – Your smartphone will still connect over Wi-Fi just fine, so replace calling with Skype or Google Voice, SMS with WhatsApp, and download a bunch of offline travel apps to use when you’re away from a signal. You’ll be surprised how well that approach can work, and not getting notifications all the time is quite refreshing.

You can download Google Maps and download the map of the city online then use it without Wi-Fi. Also, you can search for your destination in Google Maps and it still works when you don’t have Wi-Fi if your location is on. You can also take screenshots and save them.

Some cities even have free public Wi-Fi in parks and public spaces like airports and train stations. If you really need it, lots of international chains like McDonald’s and Starbucks have Wi-Fi if you buy something to eat or drink. Remember to be careful with your data on these open networks (a VPN is recommended).

2. Buy a budget smartphone – While there’s a lot of junk at the bottom of the smartphone range, there are a few decent phones for travelers under $200. My current favorite is the Motorola Moto G — you’ll want to buy a microSD card for some extra storage, but other than that it’s a reasonably speedy smartphone, with a battery that lasts all day. Tip: grab the “Global” version for maximum compatibility overseas. You’ll still need to buy local SIM cards to put in it.

3. Rent a phone – You can rent phones at airports and from various companies before you leave home, but I’d only consider it for a short trip to a specific country where my usual phone didn’t work. For anything other than that, it’s cheaper just to buy a new one.

4. Rent or buy a portable hotspot – Portable hotspots are small gadgets that create a wireless network and share a cellular data connection over it — you can typically connect 5 or 10 devices to the network you create. You can rent one for short trips at an inflated daily or weekly rate, or you can buy an unlocked hotspot and stick a local SIM card in it, just as if it were a phone. Your smartphone will treat this like any other Wi-Fi network.

Getting your smartphone to work overseas without coming home to a huge bill isn’t always a straightforward task. But with a bit of time and effort, you’ll know exactly what options you’ve got when you’re on the road and you’ll be able to use your phone overseas.

Do your research, avoid the rip-offs, buy one of the above best smartphones when you travel, and you’ll be able to stay in touch, stay connected, and stay Instagramming when you travel!

Otterbox symmetry series.

This rugged protective case is much slimmer than many other styles from this brand (and many competitors).

It’s costly for a case.

Otterbox is practically synonymous with phone cases at this point. Founded in 1998, the company has been there from the beginning, surely protecting thousands upon thousands of phones from shattering into pieces thanks to its rugged cases. But the Otterbox bricks you remember aren’t what the Symmetry Series is all about. This model is as slim as many on the market — ideal for phone purses and fanny packs —only tougher, with the ability to withstand drops three times the military standard (which are drop tests on all sides 26 times from a height of four feet).

Smartish gripmunk case.

This is a surprisingly low price for such a good case.

It’s on the low end in terms of protection.

For the amount that some brands charge for a slice of plastic to protect your phone, it’s amazing how low Smartish keeps its prices for its great case. For around $20, the Smartish Gripmunk can protect iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S phones from drops of six feet or less — certainly enough for hip-height drops. To do so, the case uses tiny air pockets in the corners, where most phones are made to drop. It’s also compatible with Apple’s MagSafe and wireless charging technology. Smartish also advertises its lifetime warranty, but it’s a bit of a misnomer; the warranty is for the case itself, not for your smartphone if it breaks.

This case comes in a few different color schemes, but if you want to boast about your dog or last trip , you can personalize it by uploading an image via Smartish’s website.

This case is made with genuinely high-quality materials.

It’s only for Apple users.

If you want to treat yourself to something that feels like you’re touching a grippy satin cloth in your hands, this Mujjo case is for you. With military-grade drop protection from 15 feet, it does the job of protecting your investment, including solid protection of the camera bulge.

Sure, if you’re just looking for protection, there are less expensive cases, but what really makes the Mujjo stand out is the quality of its materials. This case is made with premium leather designed in the Netherlands, along with recycled plastic “clicky” buttons.

It’s also great for traveling since you can wear it around your neck or over the shoulder, or detach it if you don’t want the strap. It also comes with a cute little card and cash pouch that snaps closed. Having the strap makes this case inherently more protective, but the company doesn’t list how protective it is from drops.

Bandolier also makes slightly more affordable cases with thinner lanyards as well as the Billie strap , which has extra pockets to serve as a small purse.

Best Waterproof

Otterbox frē series.

It’s one tough case that can handle anything, including water.

It isn’t more waterproof than the iPhone already is.

If you don’t trust Apple when they say their phones are waterproof, trust Otterbox. This case promises to be submersible of 6.5 feet for an hour, which is the same IP68 rating as Apple claims. Though unlike what comes out of the box on your new iPhone, you can (and should) test the case before you use it to make absolutely sure it’s waterproof. This Otterbox is also super tough — it can withstand drops five times the military standard, which is even more than the Defender Series.

This case comes with a built-in screen protector and port cover, which will keep gunk out of the USB-C or Lightning port.

Arc Pulse Phone Case

You can hold onto the actual sides of your phone.

It’s not as protective as a full case.

It doesn’t get any slimmer than the Arc Pulse. This case isn’t so much as a case as a couple of bumpers on the top and bottom to protect the edges and the lens bulge. The selling point here is that you can actually hold your phone as it was meant to be held, without having to worry that it’ll break if it slips out of your hand. The idea is definitely an attractive one, and the company says it can be dropped from a height of 10 feet.

However, definitely don’t skimp on a screen protector with this one.

It’s a bulkier choice.

This case is a Jack-of-all-trades. Since it’s a folio, the case covers the screen for both protection and privacy, then opens like a book to reveal three pockets for cards plus a slot for cash. It would be weird to leave the official Apple case off the list, so here it is. Built for the iPhone 15 (and every other model from the 12 up aside from SE), this case is very smooth yet grippy, and you know it’ll work for all of Apple’s tech including wireless charging and MagSafe. It also is the only case with the famous Apple logo on the back and comes in a variety of attractive colors.

Apple doesn’t list its drop test results, but plenty of reviewer tests have proven it’s a capable case.

If you’re a Google user, here’s the comparable official case for the Pixel 7a .

A rock-bottom price for a case every traveler should pack.

You’ll need to change your phone’s settings to take snaps via the volume buttons.

The waterproof pouch is a simple yet highly effective concept and makes for a very useful tech gadget . Just stick your phone, cash, and/or passport inside and it’ll stay dry. This pouch boasts an IPX8 rating, which means it can be submerged down to 5 feet for up to 30 minutes. Use this pouch for a day at the beach to keep water and sand out of your phone port, or for taking sweet underwater picks in the pool. It’d also be a must in a place like Mexico’s Playa del Amor, where you have to swim under a rock to get to the hidden beach.

Tips for Buying a Protective Phone Case

Make sure it fits your phone model.

Many of the latest and greatest cases are only made for the newest phones. If you don’t see yours at the link provided, you may need to search for the case and model in the vendor’s search bar if no scroll-down menu is provided.

Prioritize shock protection

The flimsy silicone case you find at the drugstore is better than nothing, but a hard fall could still leave your phone scratched. Higher-quality cases have various layers, air pockets, or other ways of shifting shock for better protection.

Know what features you need

The case depends on you and your phone. If you have an iPhone 12 or newer model, you probably want the case to work with Apple’s MagSafe technology, which is a ring of magnets on the back that helps the phone attach to compatible accessories. Some cases even add their own magnets for boosted MagSafe stickiness. If your phone isn’t waterproof (and you frequent travel to the beach or live in a rainy climate), look for a waterproof case like the Otterbox Frē Series for peace of mind. Other features to look for include grip as some materials, like previous Apple silicone cases, can be slippery along with added card slots if you want a phone and wallet in one.

Yes, but not all cases are made equal. The point of a case is to protect your expensive, delicate device from scratches and dents. In that regard, most will do, though cases with more shock absorption are better bets.

If you’re traveling abroad, you’ll want to keep your wireless service active for many reasons, the most important being to still contact friends and family. It’s highly likely you’ll also need to use GPS, Google, and other smartphone features during your trip. Unfortunately, even with the best cell phone plan deals , most wireless plans don’t include international travel or coverage overseas. That means you’ll either have to sign up explicitly for a foreign wireless account, or you can grab a burner phone to use while you’re there. Regardless, there are a few options, and we’ve taken the liberty of hunting down the best ones and sharing them all for you right here.

The best phone plans for international travel in 2024

• Go with if you want reliable yet flexible international plans.
• Go with Google Fi for temporary coverage with existing plans.
• Go with if you’re an existing customer and want to use the daily TravelPass.

Best flexible option

• Price: $60 to $90 per month
• Data: Free up to 5GB depending on plan and country

T-Mobile is one of the best international travel providers because of its extreme flexibility. In addition to its voice and text plans, you can add an international pass for up to 15GB for 30 days to secure data coverage. However, T-Mobile expressly states that its services are “not for extended international use,” meaning your primary usage must include coverage at home in the United States.

Best for temporary coverage

• Price: $20 to $65 per month
• Data: $10 per GB

If you’re a U.S. resident traveling abroad, Google Fi is an excellent option, especially if you already use the service. The cost for a single phone line is between $20 and $65  — plus taxes and fees — depending on which plan you opt for, and data abroad is about $10 per GB, with free data after 6GB per month. Talk costs about 20 cents per minute abroad in eligible countries. If you subscribe to the Unlimited Plus plan, you’ll get unlimited talk, text, and data in over 200 destinations worldwide. In some areas, Google Fi will rely on other carrier networks, like T-Mobile’s, to ensure you have widespread coverage. Basically, the most important thing to know here is that Google expressly forbids the use of Google Fi internationally if that’s your only activity. In other words, if you’re traveling abroad temporarily, it’s okay, but if you’re a permanent resident elsewhere, it’s a no-no.

Best for existing customers

• Price: Adds $10 per day to $100 per month
• Data: Unlimited

Verizon offers several options for international wireless coverage, including Verizon TravelPass and its international monthly plans. With TravelPass, you pay $10 per day, per line, for unlimited talk, text, and data, and it’s accessible in over 210 countries. TravelPass only charges you for the days you use data or send or receive calls. Alternatively, Verizon’s international monthly plan is $100 per month for 250 minutes of talk, but you get unlimited texts and data in eligible countries. The TravelPass option is excellent if Verizon is already your main wireless carrier.

Another great option

• Price: Adds $10 per day

Like the other major carriers, AT&T offers a variety of international options for existing customers. Mexico and Canada are already covered, for example, with calls up to 85-plus countries from the U.S. for $15 per month, per line, and discounted rates in an additional 140 countries. You can also take on specific international access for Europe, Asia Pacific, and other countries through a $10 per day International Day Pass. With that, you get unlimited talk, text, and data, and you can add on extra phones for just $5 per day per phone.

Best eSIM option

• Price: Adds $10 per month
• Data: $5 per 1GB for 7 days
• Options: Data (talk and text over data)

Maybe it’s surprising to see Boost Mobile on this list, or maybe not, but it offers some great international support via the International Connect plans, and eSIM compatibility. With any existing Boost plan, $10 per month gets you International Connect for voice in over 120 countries and texting in over 200. You will need an eSIM on an unlocked phone to utilize it, however, so if your phone doesn’t support the protocol you’ll need another option. You can also add data, starting at $5 for 1GB over 7 days.

Best modular option

• Price: $36 to $89 per month
• Data: 20GB over 30 to 180 days (depending on location)

If your device supports eSIM, you can also use something like Airalo to find coverage wherever you’re traveling. Be aware that standard SMS is not available through something like this as it’s data-based only, but you can still send text and make voice calls over data connections where available. Prices vary, but they do tend to be cheaper than other options, with callouts being 20GB over 180 days for $89 in over 84 countries globally or 20GB over 30 days for $36 in France. You can buy piecemeal based on where you’ll be visiting and for how long you’ll be there.

How we chose these phone plans for international travel

The core elements of a good international wireless plan will differ greatly from local options. Speeds, for example, will be limited by what’s available in the current country or region. The same is true for wireless coverage, which can directly affect signal strength and connection experiences. That said, there are some common factors that you should look for when choosing a plan for yourself or your family.

You’re traveling, maybe even to multiple countries or locations, so you need the plan to be reliable but flexible, and the same goes for the price. The last thing you want to see is unexpected roaming or international charges because the plan didn’t offer coverage in an obscure situation or remote location.

All the plans that we have chosen are feasible in this regard, offering flexible yet accessible pricing that’s clear and easily modifiable when needed to match coverage requirements. Ultimately, these plans reduce the headaches and complexities of managing international wireless services.

Maintenance

With some plans, like a WiFi-only plan, you need to do something to activate the plan and make sure you’re getting coverage — in that case, you would need to disable your mobile activity and swap to a nearby WiFi network. Moreover, some might require you to use a specific physical SIM card, eSIM, or digital SIM card, which might require you to swap out your current one or activate the digital variant. These small maintenance tasks are important to keep in mind because it’s easy to forget the upkeep when you’re busy exploring or sightseeing. We were mindful to select wireless options that make this process as simple or virtually seamless as possible.

As with a local plan, international plans also have varying features. Some allow you to text, access a limited quantity of data, and make calls to supported countries. Unlimited Data

By now, you’re probably well aware this is a thing in the wireless industry: They promise “unlimited data,” but what you’re really getting is not that. The same is true with international phone plans and coverage. When available, you might see data speeds throttled after certain thresholds, connectivity issues in various locations, or even some hidden charges associated when there shouldn’t be. There’s not much you can do about this, disingenuous on the part of wireless providers or not. But you should definitely be mindful of these concerns and keep an eye on your phone bill, just in case.

Do I need to buy a new phone?

It depends on your current phone’s capabilities and what wireless provider you decide to go with abroad. Some devices are not compatible across the different carrier networks. Moreover, you might need to swap out your current SIM for another to gain access, and depending on where you purchase or acquire the card, they may not be compatible with specific carriers.

What are hidden fees?

Typically, when you sign a contract or subscribe to a plan with your wireless provider, you agree to some combination of talk, text, and data for a specific monthly rate — say, $75 per month. However, when you receive your bill, you’ll notice almost immediately that the true cost is higher than what was promised. All that extra, the additional money you’re being charged, makes up hidden fees.

Some fees come from the carriers themselves, like smartphone line access, device payments or subsidies, or usage and additional purchase charges for various services like roaming or international coverage. Other fees include the Fed Universal service charge, regulatory fees, administrative charges, local business license surcharges, taxes, and governmental surcharges, including state fees and beyond. In some cases, you can try to negotiate these charges, but you’ll still see them on your bill, regardless.

Can you use WiFi abroad?

Yes, you can use WiFi abroad and while traveling internationally. Whether or not you can access the network(s) for free depends on the provider. Just like here in the States, local coffee shops and small venues may provide free access to service. Others may charge a small fee to use their network. While we would not recommend maintaining contact with friends and family through WiFi alone and cutting off mobile service entirely, it is an alternative in areas where coverage may be spotty or unavailable.

Over the years, there have been a number of smartphones with built-in kick-stands. I always thought they were somewhat gimmicky. After spending some time various iPhone kick-stands, I am now in the “I wouldn’t hate an iPhone with a built-in stand. I’ve been testing the MOFT Phone Tripod for the past week or two, and it’s great device to keep in your travel bag.

What are the use cases?

The MOFT Phone Tripod resembles many MagSafe-compatible wallets, but it comes in an origami style. It can be used in a variety of ways at multiple angles, including vertical and horizontal. It’s only .27 inches thick but can raise your iPhone up to 8 inches in height. That makes it useful for holding your phone steady while recording, watching videos at your desk, or catching up on a movie on a plane. It’s thin enough to permanently leave it on your iPhone without noticing.

Multiple times a day, I tend to take Zoom meetings away from my desk and my iPhone. This is the perfect device for that. I find the iPhone a better way to take video meetings as it has a much better front-facing camera than my Mac, and there is also a level of focus it brings where you can’t multi-task. I also hate that people’s monitor setups require them to look away from their webcam, as it’s hard to tell if folks are paying attention. With this device, I can easily prop up my iPhone at a great height, take the call, and focus on the meeting at hand.

• iOS has a hidden feature called Preview Flight for quick flight status updates.

Few things start a trip off on the wrong foot like running to the boarding area only to find the gate number has changed. But one former airline employee's viral TikTok is unearthing a hidden iOS feature that quickly delivers flight status without downloading a separate app. Called Preview Flight , the feature is hidden inside iOS native apps as a quick hack to get all the information from the boarding screens onto your iPhone screen -- but what is it and how does it work?

The feature isn't new, but its location is buried, making it a relatively unknown hack. The Preview Flight hack is gaining new recognition, thanks to a video by TikToker Darby Maloney Durbinmalonster, where she shares her favorite flight hack for quickly viewing flight updates on an iPhone. In the video, she explains how simply texting yourself the flight number allows for easy access to travel data. However, while the video focuses on Flight Tracker within Messages, iPhone users can also access the tool using an even simpler option: The search bar.

While there are numerous apps designed for flight tracking, Preview Flight is integrated into iOS, meaning there's no need for an extra app. Indeed, there are various methods to check your flight status on your iPhone, but perhaps none are as quick or as straightforward. In addition to gate and departure times, you can also click a shortcut to view a map of the airport or even download an airport map for offline use, allowing you to view the landing airport while in flight. If you're aware of your airline code and flight number, accessing the information takes just a few seconds. Here's how.

How to track a flight using spotlight search, pull down the home screen on iphone and enter your flight number.

Using Apple's Spotlight Search, finding quick flight data takes just a few seconds. All you need is an iPhone and the flight number with the airline code. Alternatively, this method also works with the Spotlight Search tool on an iPad or a Mac. Here's how.

• Open a Spotlight Search. On an iPhone, pull up the search bar by swiping down from the middle of the home screen (avoid swiping from the very top, or you'll access your notifications). You might also find a search icon on the first page of your home screen above the dock that contains your essential apps like phone, email, Safari, and text messages.
• Type in the airline identifier followed by the flight number. For example, Flight 341 from United Airlines would be UA341.
• Tap on the blue flight data result next to the airline icon -- it usually appears right at the top of the search results.
• On this screen, you can now view essential flight data, including departure and arrival times, the terminal and gate to head to, and even the baggage claim area to find your luggage after landing. At the bottom of the screen, you'll find shortcuts to the airline's webpage and one-tap access to view or download a map of the airport terminals in Maps.
• iOS will save your search results, so when you need to check if the flight is on time or if the gate has changed, pull down from the middle of the home screen again and tap on the flight number listed in your recent searches for quick access.

How to recover deleted messages on iPhone

How to track a flight in messages or mail, text or email your flight number, and it'll be made into a link.

Texting the flight number to a friend will allow them to tap on the link to easily see if the flight has been delayed -- a helpful tool when a friend is picking you up from the airport. However, you can also just type the number to yourself for quick access. This works with emails as well, so you could also send yourself the same information, open the email, and tap on the link, just like with a text message.

• Open the Messages app and start a new text to yourself . (Yes, you can text yourself; just start typing your name or phone number in a new text message.) Alternatively, start a new email .
• Send yourself a text with the airline identifier followed by the flight number . For example, United Airlines Flight 341 would be UA341. Or, you can send it in an email. Both options will create a link . Hit send .
• iOS will automatically convert that flight number into a link . Tap on that link .
• Tap on " Preview Flight " from the pop-up menu.
• That's it -- you'll now see the flight data , including whether the flight is delayed, what the gates are, where the plane is on its route, where to find your luggage, and quick links to a map of the airport.

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Dc has the perfect answer for an incredibly frustrating time travel cliché (that even back to the future is guilty of).

When it comes to timeline shenanigans, the DC Universe is avoiding the pitfalls even the best time travel movies always seem to fall into.

• The Flash is exploring dangerous parts of the DC Universe with the help of Inspector Pilgrim to solve cosmic mysteries.
• The DC Universe faces chaos as timelines are affected by extra-dimensional threats, leading to new allies and strange events.
• The Flash Family debates the impact of time travel on the timeline, using real-world principles to craft a compelling mystery.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Flash #7! The DC Universe is coming apart at the seams, but its avoiding one of the most infamous cliches in time travel stories. For the last several months, the Flash has been exploring some of the wildest and most dangerous parts of the DC Universe.

Aiding the Flash's mission is the shadowy figure Inspector Pilgrim . He's been assisting the world's brightest minds as cosmic phenomenons continue to pile up and have a drastic effect on the DCU. And while these oddities are affecting the timeline, DC Comics has a unique spin on one of the biggest cliches that pops up in time travel-based stories.

How the DC Universe Has Gotten Off the Rails

The DC Universe has always been a place filled with magic and unexplainable phenomena like the Speed Force. But things got a lot more weird when the Flash crashed through an atomic mirror during a battle with an upgraded Mirror Master. Wally West suddenly developed a new power he came to call ‘side-stepping’ . This power allowed the Fastest Man Alive to phase through different layers of reality and explore creepy new dimensions that were hidden in plain sight. Unfortunately, this discovery kicked off a series of strange events in the DC Universe .

Gorilla Grodd came to Central City with an army of soldiers in a series of attacks armed with powerful new technology. One of his experiments gained the attention of an Uncoiled, a terrifying killer monster from one of the hidden dimensions the Flash discovered. Thankfully, the Flash was saved by the Stillness, a group of cosmic researchers who were investigating yet another strange phenomenon, the Arc Angles. As the odd events began to stack up, a new ally presented himself to the Flash Family : Inspector Pilgrim, Science Detective.

Inspector Pilgrim was working with Mister Terrific to analyze the new cosmic disturbances that were racking up at an alarming rate. Unfortunately, things spiraled out of control, leading to the DC Universe being inundated with creatures from the various extra-dimensional realms. Wally teamed up with his former mentor Barry Allen, and the two Flashes raced around the globe to get things under control. What the two heroes didn’t know was that much of the chaos was actually planned by a powerful and unknown threat who planned to unleash a weapon known as the Crown of Thawnes onto the DC Universe .

The Flash Family Ends the Debate on Time Travel

In The Flash #7 by Si Spurrier, Ramón Pérez, Sofie Dodgson, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, Impulse and Max Mercury are trapped in the hidden layer Max has come to call ‘Ickto’. The two heroes are under attack from a swarm of Uncoiled and unfortunately for the heroes, this place has impaired their speedster abilities. Thankfully, the two are rescued by the Linear Bureau’s enforcers, the Linear Men, who defeat the Uncoiled and take the Flash Family members to an extra-dimensional void to recuperate from their experience.

Pilgrim agrees that Bart’s assessment is correct, but he also points out that perspective is key

The duo meets Inspector Pilgrim, who brings Max and Bart up to speed on what it is that the Linear Bureau does. Pilgrim tells the speedsters that the Bureau is an “ atemporal organization devoted to the smooth running of a stochastic universe ”. But Pilgrim simplifies it by describing himself and his comrades as 'time cops'. Pilgrim informs Max and Impulse that something has changed in the DC Universe’s timeline . Reality is falling apart at the seams and Pilgrim sums it up in the clearest way he can: Someone has murdered the future.

As Max struggles to comprehend the weight of Pilgrim’s assessment, Impulse calls the entire thing stupid. Impulse calls it ‘bad sci-fi logic’, saying that if something changes the timeline, it does suddenly change or have a domino effect; the affected timeline will have always just been that way. Pilgrim agrees that Bart’s assessment is correct, but he also points out that perspective is key, noting that at quantum levels, outcomes are contingent upon observations, meaning that shifts to the timeline can be interpreted subjectively.

The DC Universe Avoids Repeating Back to the Future's Cliche

The concept of time travel is theoretical, but that hasn’t stopped numerous stories from experimenting with the idea. Back to the Future infamously popularized the idea of a malleable timeline, where changes could be witnessed and corrected. For Marty McFly, he could see the changes to his timeline through a photograph that saw his siblings disappear one by one. Avengers: Endgame went in a much different direction saying no changes could be made to the original timeline and that time travel only resulted in creating separate realities.

Because of the fast and loose nature of time travel, movies and franchises have portrayed the notion wildly different. The film About Time dove into the cause-and-effect nature of changes to the past, but ultimately presented time as being very fluid. Interstellar dove into the theories of time travel centered around the idea of time dilation. And the excellent Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure showcased a world where time travel not only existed but changes to the timeline were already a solidified part of their history .

While all theoretical, Impulse is correct that time travel would behave a bit more like Bill and Ted than Back to the Future . But Inspector Pilgrim raises a solid point that in quantum mechanics, the outcome is different depending on how things are observed. The Linear Bureau would be able to see the DC Univere's history from a different perspective and recognize the changes done to the timeline . Changes made via time travel still permanently affect the timeline, but allow the story to do what it needs for the sake of the mystery of who killed the future.

DC Comics is Putting a New Stamp on Time Travel Stories

Since there are no real rules to it, time travel can be a difficult topic to write about. But by touching on a few real-world principles, DC Comics has been able to craft a compelling time-travel mystery. While humanity may never master traversing through time, the idea has created endless stories with many postulations about how it would work. And while some stories may go for a more cliched approach, the DC Universe is avoiding that with its unique take on how time travel works.
