Most of the budget-friendly all-season touring tires that you will find on the market only perform well in dry conditions. When exposed to snowy or icy conditions, they tend to lose traction and grip. However, the Sumitomo Tour Plus LS appears to be an exception.

It’s one of the few budget-friendly all-season touring tires that deliver reliable performance in dry, wet, and light snowy conditions. And on top of that, the ride is also comfortable and its tread is long-lasting. In short, it’s almost impossible to find a fault with this tire.

Design Features and Technologies

The Sumitomo Tour Plus LS is a well-outfitted tire, which comes with several great features. These features are designed to enable it to deliver the best performance possible, across different terrains and environmental conditions. Some of its key features include:

Carbon Black Tread Compound

Sumitomo has provisioned the Tour Plus LS with an advanced carbon black tread compound. This advanced all-season compound is then formed into a symmetric tread pattern. The tire’s tread also features computer-optimized sipes.

This combination enables the Sumitomo Tour Plus LS to deliver top-notch traction in all weather conditions and on all road surfaces.

Additional Siping

Sumitomo has further provisioned the Tour Plus LS with additional sipes all around the tire. These extra sipes provide additional biting edges, for enhanced grip in snowy conditions.

Wide Longitudinal Grooves

The Sumitomo Tour Plus LS also comes with four wide and deep longitudinal grooves. The main role of these longitudinal grooves is to channel water from the tire in wet and slushy conditions, thus minimizing hydroplaning issues.

Robust Internal Construction

Sumitomo has gone a step further and outfitted the Tour Plus LS with its proprietary Jointless Nylon Band technology. This feature helps to strengthen this tire, thus making sure it doesn’t deform during high-speed driving.

Also, this tire’s sturdy internal construction helps to enhance its durability. Therefore, the chances of experiencing premature wear and tear with this tire are slim, thanks to its robust interior construction.

Performance in Different Conditions

According to Sumitomo, the Tour Plus LS is built to deliver dependable traction in dry, wet, and light snowy conditions. It will also give you a comfortable, quiet, and luxurious ride. But does it deliver accordingly?

Well, we mounted a set of this tire on a 2019 Honda Civic and assessed its performance across different conditions and terrains. And after hours of thorough testing, we made the following observations on its performance.

Dry Performance

On dry tarmac, the Tour Plus LS performed exceptionally well. It delivered ample traction and grip. Even when driving at high speeds, it continued supplying remarkable traction and grip.

The Tour Plus LS may not deliver winning performances on the track like an ultra-high performance tire. But, you can rest assured that it will not disappoint you. It’s one of the best performers on dry tarmac in its class when it comes to traction on dry tarmac.

As for braking distances, we weren’t disappointed either. They remained short. Also, we didn’t experience any skidding. Also, it responded well to steering commands, making it easy to navigate tight corners. Overall, unless you are an aggressive driver, you can always count on this tire to deliver safe and reliable performances on dry tarmac.

Wet Performance

As earlier noted, this tire is designed to perform well across different conditions and surfaces. So, is this the case when you encounter wet conditions? Well, we were fully impressed by this tire’s performance on wet and slippery roads.

Its traction and grip on wet surfaces were also decent. Also, we never encountered aquaplaning issues. And this can be attributed to the four wide and deep longitudinal grooves on its tread, which do a remarkable job of channeling water away.

Its wet cornering was also above average. It comes with large shoulder blocks, which make sure that the tire maintains contact with the road surface, even during instances of tight cornering.

Wet braking is another area where this tire outshines most of the competition. We managed to bring the Honda Civic to a stop within a few seconds. And, the braking distances remained on the lower side.

But, we should mention that the Tour Plus LS is not an ultra-high performance tire. So, you shouldn’t expect it to deliver the braking power that you will get from a premium UHP tire. To this end, you shouldn’t push your vehicle too hard when you are driving in wet and slippery conditions with this tire.

Performance in Snowy Conditions

Its performance in light snowy conditions is above average. With this tire, you can expect a safe ride if you happen to come across snowy conditions, thanks to the extra sipes on its tread, which provide extra biting edges.

However, this is not a dedicated winter tire. Its rubber will harden when you encounter extremely cold conditions. And when this happens, it will lose a considerable amount of grip. So, it will be highly recommended to replace this tire with the designed snow tire when the cold season comes around, especially if you live in an area that experiences harsh and prolonged winter.

Off-road Driving

The Sumitomo Tour Plus LS is an all-season touring tire. With this in mind, we didn’t bother evaluating its performance in off-road conditions. It lacks the performance features present in off-roading tires. As a result, its traction and grip in these conditions will be poor.

Furthermore, its rubber is not sturdy enough, to handle aggressive off-road terrains and conditions. Hence, if you were to use it in these conditions, you will experience serious damage as well as premature wear and tear.

Also, using this tire for off-roading drives can void its warranty, since the manufacturer has not built it for such conditions.

So, it’s not recommended to use this tire for off-roading. If you are planning to take your vehicle for an off-roading excursion over the weekend, you should replace the Tour Plus LS with a dedicated off-roading tire.

Racing Performance

If you are a racing enthusiast, you can sometimes decide to see how your vehicle racks up against your friends’ cars. So, how does this tire perform on the racing track? Can you depend on it?

According to drivers who have assessed its racing performance, the feedback has been positive. It provides a decent steering response during high-speed driving. Also, it comes with a rim protector, which will shield it from curb damage – a common scenario in racing.

But again, the Sumitomo Tour Plus LS is not a dedicated racing tire. It lacks the main racing attributes found in sporty tires. So, you shouldn’t experience its steering feedback to match that of a dedicated racing tire.

Ride Quality

The Sumitomo Tour Plus LS delivers a smooth and comfortable ride. During our test drives, we were impressed by how refined this tire is. We didn’t experience road noise or vibrations. Also, it handles rough road surfaces almost perfectly.

However, we experienced some noise and vibrations coming from the tire when we pushed the vehicle to its limits. But overall, as long as you maintain the recommended speeds, you shouldn’t experience any excessive noise or vibration with the Sumitomo Tour Plus LS.

It’s so refined that your vehicle’s passengers can comfortably catch some sleep. And this is something great, especially during those long road trips when you spend several hours on the road.

Warranties and Guarantees

Sumitomo stands behind the Tour Plus LS with two key warranties. These are a workmanship and materials warranty as well as a treadwear warranty. Besides these two warranties, the Tour Plus LS also qualifies for Sumitomo’s roadside assistance service.  Let’s take an in-depth look at these warranties and guarantees.

Workmanship and Materials Warranty

Similar to other Sumitomo tires, the Tour Plus LS also comes with a workmanship and materials warranty. According to this warranty, Sumitomo promises to replace the Tour Plus LS with a comparable new tire, if it’s removed from service due to defects arising from workmanship or materials.

If the Tour Plus LS is removed from service due to defects caused by workmanship issues or materials used during its first 2/32-inch of the original usable tread, Sumitomo will replace it with a comparable new tire, free of charge.

If the tire becomes unusable due to workmanship or materials defects after the first 2/32-inch of the original usable tread, Sumitomo will replace it with a comparable new one. But this time, the replacement will be entirely on a prorated basis. Hence, you will contribute a certain amount of the tire’s replacement fee.

Treadwear Warranty

Also known as a mileage warranty, this warranty is designed to protect you against losing your money if your tire wears out prematurely without attaining the warranted mileage.

So, if your Sumitomo Tour Plus LS fails to deliver the promised mileage, the manufacturer will replace it for you. The coverage you will get will depend on the version of the tire that you’ve purchased. The H-rated and V-rated versions come with a 55,000-mile warranty while the T-rated version comes with a 65,000-mile warranty.

However, unlike the materials and workmanship warranty, no free replacement is offered under this warranty. All the replacements are purely on a pro-rated basis, meaning you will have to contribute a particular amount towards the tire’s replacement.

An authorized Sumitomo tire dealer will determine the amount you will pay during the tire’s replacement by multiplying the percentage of the original tread that has been worn off the Tour Plus LS with its current retail price.

For example, your H-rated Tour Plus LS may wear out down to its treadwear indicators after only delivering 22,000 miles, out of the promised 55,000 miles. And, this represents a 40% level of treadwear. Assuming that the current retail price for the Tour Plus LS is $100, then the amount that you will contribute at the time of its replacement will be $40.

Roadside Assistance

As we mentioned earlier, this tire also qualifies for Sumitomo’s roadside assistance service. The coverage offered for this tire runs for two years from its date of purchase.

If you happen to get a puncture when driving, you simply need to call Sumitomo’s customer service. And after doing that, Sumitomo will send a technician to your location and replace the tire. However, you will need to have an inflated spare for the replacement to be done.

In case you don’t have an inflated spare, then you will be offered a towing service to the nearest qualified facility, free of charge. However, the towing service is offered for up to $60. If it exceeds this amount, then you will have to cover the extra costs yourself. This service runs 24/7. Therefore, you will always be covered, regardless of when the flat happens.

30-Day Trial

All newly purchased Sumitomo tires come with a 30-day trial. So, if you purchase this tire and you are not satisfied with its performance, you are at liberty to return it to its original place of purchase, as long as you do it within 30 days after buying it.

When you return the tire, the dealer will issue you a full refund. And this will also include the mounting and balancing charges. However, you will be required to produce the tire’s original sales invoice.

Tires that come with damage caused by abuse, negligence, improper inflation, defective wheel, or vehicle issues don’t qualify for this guarantee.

Sizes and Fitment

Sumitomo produces this tire in a wide range of sizes. The available sizes run between 13 inches and 18 inches. And with such a vast range of sizes, you can expect this tire to fit numerous vehicles out there. It can fit vehicles such as:

  • Honda Civic, Odyssey, and Accord
  • Chevrolet Cavalier, Venture, Cobalt, and Monte Carlo
  • Pontiac Grand Prix, Grand Am, Vibe, and Sunfire
  • Buick Century and LeSabre
  • Ford Mustang, Focus, Taurus, and Edge
  • Saturn L200, SL2, L100, and SW1
  • Dodge Shadow, Neon, and Caravan
  • Hyundai Elantra and Accent
  • Toyota Camry, Prius, Corolla, Previa, Sienna, and Echo
  • Nissan Quest, Maxima, and Altima

Sumitomo Tour Plus LS Pros

  • Exceptional dry and wet traction
  • Admirable performance on light snowy roads
  • Refined ride
  • Stellar steering response
  • Durable tread

Sumitomo Tour Plus LS Cons

  • A bit noisy at high speeds

The Sumitomo Tour Plus LS delivers on almost all its promises. It delivers top-notch wet and dry traction, outstanding steering response, a quiet and comfortable ride as well as great tread life. It also comes with a budget-friendly price tag. Overall, you are assured of getting value for your money if you purchase this tire.

Big O Legacy Tour Plus Tires

The Big O Legacy Tour Plus is a touring, all season tire created for passenger vehicles. This tire is made of a coupled silica compound which improves traction on wet and snow-covered roads. It has seamless water evacuation with the circumferential and lateral grooves that ensure consistent traction.

The tread pattern is full of sipes that make the whole driving experience more stable by increasing handling. Lateral grooves, high-density siping and an abundance of biting edges ensure a strong grip through the four seasons. The tire’s grip together with its stability enhances its steering responsiveness and cornering. The five-rib tread of the Legacy Tour Plus sits well on the road and absorbs the vibrations caused by driving.

The rubber compound has silica in the mix which improves traction, while the tread grooves channel the water away.

The tire tread is full of tiny sipes that hugely improve its handling and stability, leading to better steering responsiveness.

Thanks to the five-rib flat footprint, the tire absorbs the driving noise even despite the increased number of lateral grooves.

Tire Meets Road

Who makes Big O tires and are they any good?

Why you’ll feel confident spending your hard earned money on these American-made tires.

Big O website: www.bigotires.com

You’ve seen their stores, know that they sell tires, but, did you know this (now) Palm Beach based tire company also sells their own brand of tires?

According to a comprehensive history of Big O from Reference for Business, Big O tires officially started doing business under the brand Big O in 1962 and started selling its own brand of tires 12 years later in 1974.

If you’re wondering where Big O tires are made the company’s history goes on to say, “…in 1992 Big O switched to U.S.-produced tires for all its stores because of difficulty in receiving adequate supplies of tires from companies such as Kumho and Hankook of South Korea.”

It’s a practice that Big O-branded tires still adheres to till this day.

Big O tires are made in the United States by the Kelly-Springfield tire company.

tour plus tires

Kelly-Springfield itself is a subsidiary of the Akron-based Goodyear Tire and Rubber company.

As of this writing, this is the Big O tire lineup. As you can see, half the tires are geared towards light to heavy off-roaders and the other half are street tires.

tour plus tires

With a bit of history and where they’re made out of the way, are Big O tires any good?

Let’s get into that.

Made in America

For the past 30 years, Big O Tires are American-made and, for many tire shoppers, that’s a big deal. In this (as of this writing) time of historic inflation and with companies outsourcing production across the border and overseas, it’s good to know all the dollars you’re spending goes towards an All-American product.

Exceptional value

Big O tires aren’t cheap, let’s get that out of the way. Take Big O’s Legacy Tour Plus, their popular all-season street touring tire in sizes 15″-18.”

A Legacy Tour Plus in 195 60 R15 costs $144.95 per tire or $579.80 for a set of four.

Plug that tire size into Google and you’ll find all sorts of so-called value brand and tier 3 tires that are much cheaper, in some cases, almost a third the price.

tour plus tires

But, with these value brand tires, even if they boast tire warranties 50,000 miles and over, a quick read through of reviews reveals their tires don’t nearly last as long. And, if and when you do need tire warranty service, U.S. based customer service is lacking.

Some value brands of tires don’t even have tire warranties, mileage or otherwise.

Sure, these cheaper brands may fit the bill but, if you absolutely rely on your tires to get you through some tough times and “have your back” (re warranties,) do you really want to cheap out where the rubber meets the road?

It’s a caveat I put on most of the other value brand tires I review.

For the “premium” price you pay over a value brand, Big O tires delivers exceptional performing tires that, as far as I’ve read (reading dozens of reviews) meets or exceeds tire longevity claims per the limited mile tire warranty.

Customers seem to love their best sellers

By far, Big O’s most popular tires are their Legacy Tour Plus and Big Foot AT NTs, two models I’m basing my impression of Big O’s brand of tires on.

Legacy Tour Plus tires seem to be an overall really good tire, delivering on performance and a premium ride at reasonable prices.

“Not only is it a good tire for the price, it’s a really good tire overall,” says 4 out of 5 star Legacy Tour Plus reviewer named Allen. “They’re quiet, smooth, and handle and ride great. I had been using a much more expensive competitor, and I cannot tell any difference except for one thing.”

On top of that, a theme I’ve found reading reviews of their Legacy Tour Plus including their other tires is that Big O brand tire purchasers are repeat buyers.

“Third set of tires from them (Big O,)” says a 5 out of 5 star reviewer named Jester6. “Great customer service and they back up what they say.”

When it comes to tire buyers demanding a lot from their tires, truck and SUV owners looking for a good AT (a tire good for light to medium off-roading that can handle long freeway slogs) demand a lot of performance for the price, and Big Foot AT NTs seem to deliver and then some.

“This is my second set of tires on my ram 2500, I do a lot of mountain driving hauling trailers and the E rated tires hold up to the loads,” says a four out of five star Big Foot AT NT reviewer named Dodge03. “The average lifespan of the tires I have used ranges from 15000 miles on the low end to these on the high of close to 40000 miles. They preform well in the snow and are decent in the mud, they are not mud tires but have really good traction for all terrains.”

Tire industry-best warranty and customer service

Big O Brand tire purchasers get a full suite of limited lifetime of tire protection warranties. On top of their pro-rated limited mileage warranty you get (if I’m reading this right) rotation and rebalancing for the useful life of your tires and 3-year 24/7 flat tire changing assistance and reimbursable benefits.

As far as I know, Big O is one of the few (if any) tire makers to offer a free rotation and rebalance service for their tire purchasers, a big plus to consider if you live within a stone’s throw of one of their stores.

Here’s a screenshot of their Big O Brand tire warranty and what that flat tire changing assistance service entails.

tour plus tires

The only con about Big O tires worth writing about is price. Big O tires slot in between Tier 2 tires and Value branded tires, they’re not as expensive as Tier 1 Premium tires and are a smidge less expensive than Tier 2 tires, but, not by much.

Tire purchasers have a lot of choices and, for a lot of families scraping by, who need a new set of tires yesterday, dropping over $600 on a set of all-seasons is just not in the cards, customer service and tire longevity aside.

If price is you’re largest determining factor buying tires, Big O tires probably are not for you.

Regardless, if you let a Big O tires rep know that money is tight, with service in mind, they’re more than willing to work with you.

For one, I’ve seen a handful of Big O tire reviews stating they honor a Veterans discount.

And, Big O tires seems to always be running some sort of sale.

Case in point, this Facebook ad.

tour plus tires

Big O’s brand of tires is the real deal, offering exceptional performance at reasonable prices.

While you may end up paying more than you wanted, seeing how cheap tires can get, at the end of the day you’re paying for the piece of mind that comes from a tire company and set of shops that will more than likely honor any tire warranty issues or limited mileage warranty claims.

It’s cliché to say that you get what you pay for and, with Big O’s brand of tires, that’s largely the case.

Big O Legacy Tour Plus Tires

The Big O Legacy Tour Plus is a touring, all season tire made for passenger vehicles. This tire is made of a silica tread compound that is highly beneficial for all season use. It provides traction in wet conditions and reduces the heat generated when driving. On top of the compound, the tire is covered with micro sipes that increase traction in snow and wet roads.

The same sipes are essential for control, as they make the tire way more stable and enhance its maneuverability. Besides circumferential grooves, there are lateral ones as well that provide additional biting edges. All this enhanced grip leads to better cornering and fast steering responsiveness. Overall, the tiny sipes make driving safer and the tire significantly more controllable. This is true in some of the harshest weather conditions, as the rubber remains flexible in a wide range of temperatures.

This model is all about grip and traction, which makes it easy to maintain road contact. Since the five-rib tread footprint is flat, most of the vibrations won’t even reach the driver cabin. The tire absorbs the road noise generated while it is in motion and enhances driver comfort without sacrificing traction. This is especially true in rainy or snowy weather conditions, as the tiny sipes and lateral grooves ensure total control for the driver. This improved traction does not come with more noise or less controllability. This is what makes the Big O Legacy Tour Plus a well-designed all season tire.

  • All Season Tire Micro siping, lateral grooves and reinforced silica compound for all-year traction and grip, especially in rain and snow.
  • Reliable Handling Improved control with the micro sipes and lateral grooves that provide the tire with extra biting edges and stabilize it.
  • Comfortable Drive The five-rib flat footprint is designed to stay uniform and quiet, absorbing most of the vibrations that would reach the cabin.

Specifications

The speed rating is a measure of what speed the tire can safely maintain for sustained periods of time. A higher speed rating will generally indicate that you will have better control and handling characteristics. Speed rating standards are established by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Manufacturers assign speed ratings to tires after extensive performance testing. On the sidewall of every tire, you’ll find one of these speed rating codes:

M – Up to 81 mph N – Up to 87 mph P – Up to 93 mph Q – Up to 99 mph R – Up to 106 mph S – Up to 112 mph T – Up to 118 mph H – Up to 130 mph V – Up to 149 mph W – Up to 168 mph Y – Up to 186 mph Z – (See Below)

What does ‘Up to 99 mph’ really mean? Tires with a Q speed rating can safely sustain speeds of up to 99 miles per hour. The tire may be able to reach higher speeds, but traveling at speeds higher than 99 mph for any length of time would be unsafe - the tire is not designed to handle it.

What is a Z Rating? For tires having a maximum speed capability above 149 mph, a Z rating may appear in the size designation ...above 186 mph, a Z rating must appear in the size designation, including a Y speed symbol in brackets.

A Few Tips About Speed Ratings… Never mix tires with different speed ratings, as this may cause serious handling problems.

We don’t recommend downgrading the speed rating of your tires, as the vehicle manufacturer has done extensive testing to determine which tires match the various driving characteristics of the vehicle. However, if you are looking for better handling, there is generally no problem in moving up to a higher speed-rated tire.

Most importantly: Put safety first. The speeds shown are test speeds; they are not recommended speeds.
