SOLO TRAVEL , SOLO TRAVEL ADVICE

Best single travel group tours for the over 50s.

Are you looking for the best group travel companies for singles over 50?

Then you’ve come to the right place. I have over 20 years of first-hand experience of singles trips and can help you find the group travel company and tour that is the best fit for you.

For the most part, these group tours have been excellent experiences, allowing me to gain a deeper understanding of local culture and history and to make lasting friendships with fellow travellers.

As well as being a relatively hassle-free way of travelling, small group tours are a superb way for a novice solo traveller to get their feet wet before striking out independently.

But is group travel right for you and, if so, which are the best single travel groups? And what should you look for when choosing a group tour company, especially as a solo traveller over 50 ?

Group travel companies cater to a range of travel styles and budgets. As with most life choices, ultimately the deciding factors will depend on your personal preferences and priorities.

In this article, I will identify the best single travel group tours for the over 50s.

Best Travel Companies for Singles Over 50

I’m going to nail my flag to the mast from the outset.

Based on my experience, the best group travel companies for singles over 50 are Explore and Exodus Travels .

These two group tour operators offer the following:

  • Small group sizes
  • Good value for money
  • Older age demographic
  • Different styles of travel to suit all solo travellers
  • Flexible booking conditions

However, Intrepid and G Adventures are also worth considering

They offer:

  • Adventure tour focus
  • Range of travel styles to suit all single travellers

More about all of these companies later.

Why You Should Book a Group Tour as a Single Traveller

It’s not difficult to see why group travel is booming in popularity .

Firstly, it’s super easy. Someone else takes the pain out of organising your trip. You merely rock up at the airport for your flight.

And as your itinerary will be put together by someone in the know you can be confident that you will cover the ‘must-see’ sights.

Tour leaders are a mine of information and there’s an excellent chance that you will gain more cultural and historical insight from group travel than if you are left to your own devices.

But for me, the main benefits of organised group travel are its time efficiency and the opportunity to meet like-minded people.

If you are a working person, the efficient use of time is the greatest advantage of group travel.

As your land arrangements are taken care of, you can hit the ground running.  And as group tour itineraries are smart about how they structure their time, you can cover larger distances and see more things in a shorter space of time.

This is an enormous boon for working people trying to shoehorn as much into their previous annual leave as possible.

Loneliness and not being able to share the moment is one of the biggest disadvantages of travelling alone . Not a problem with group travel; instant companionship is part of the package.

people sitting around dining table on group travel for singles tour

In my experience, bonds form quickly and often more intensively than in ‘real life’. Sometimes, parting from the group at the end of the tour can be a wrench, contributing to post-travel blues when you get home.

However, an added bonus is that some of these relationships persist once back on home soil.

There’s safety in numbers and if you are anxious about your personal safety when travelling alone , the security of a group tour may be the answer for you.

Finally, the last two years have shown us that travel can be a precarious pastime.

The coronavirus pandemic forced me to curtail a solo trip travelling across Japan by rail . With my return flight cancelled and few alternative options available, finding a way home resulted in a few more grey hairs, whilst teaching me some valuable travel lessons!

Contrast this with a small tour group I chatted with as I was boarding my plane home.

Yes; they also had to curtail their holiday. However, Wendy Wu Tours, their group travel company, took care of all of the arrangements for them.

I confess that I was more than a little bit envious.

My Experiences of Group Travel

It all began in New Zealand on a short Contiki bus tour of the South Island.

This was party bus central. Although this was huge fun as a thirty-something, I wouldn’t want to repeat it in my 50s. My liver couldn’t take it.

My next group travel experience could not have been more different.

The place was India, the group tour operator was Bales Worldwide (subsequently acquired by Virgin Holidays ), the style was luxury travel for less . Not exactly getting down and dirty with local people, comfortable air-conditioned coaches whisked us from one 5-star hotel to the next.

Subsequent group tours have been more modest, largely travelling with Explore and Exodus Travels and visiting destinations from Iran to Libya, China to Sri Lanka .

How to Choose Single Travel Groups

Group travel is a thriving market with multiple operators offering an enormous and evolving range of group tours that singles can book. Although my favourite group travel companies are Explore and Exodus, I wouldn’t automatically restrict my choice to these two companies.

Before you click on that ‘Book Now’ button there are ten important questions you need to first ask before booking a group tour.

  • What is your budget?
  • Is a single room important to you?
  • How many other people do you want to be travelling with?
  • What are the likely demographics of your fellow travellers?
  • Will the accommodation fit your travel style?
  • Is the itinerary balanced?
  • How will you get from A to B?
  • Are local guides used?
  • Is there a robust refund and cancellation policy?
  • What is the company’s approach to sustainable travel?

Small Group Tours for Single Travellers Over 50

For me, this is the number one choice for group travel for over 50 singles. With small group tours, you will be travelling in a group of 8  – 18 people, sometimes fewer, very occasionally more.

On a trip to Thailand and Cambodia with Explore Worldwide, there were just six of us. But on another trip to Morocco, we numbered 20.

This involves mostly private transport, with a few local options thrown in.

Many small-group tour operators will offer different tiers of trips , the cost of which is largely determined by the quality of digs. Both mid-range price tours and the more comfortable options are suitable for travellers over 50 singles.

Whilst the more expensive trips may attract older travellers, this is not always the case. The group tour to Sri Lanka was one of Exodus Travels’ Premium trips and the age of my fellow travellers ranged from those in their 30s right up to their early 70s.

Equally, it’s not a given that the mid-range price tours will be exclusively filled by younger travellers.

In my experience, the mid-range price small group tours attract a wide range of age groups from millennials up to retirees. Accommodation tends to be clean and comfortable and, if you are lucky, you will be treated to a luxury stay for a few nights.

My favourite small group tour companies

My favourite small group tour companies are Explore and Exodus Travels . I have notched up a dozen trips with them, evenly split between the two companies.

That suggests that there is not a lot to differentiate between these two operators.

Both companies offer well-balanced itineraries across the globe. Broadly speaking Explore and Exodus Travels cater to the same market and some of their itineraries are strikingly similar.

The baseline price for Explore trips tends to be less but check for optional activities that will attract additional fees.

MOROCCO WITH EXPLORE

This was one of my first group travel experiences and one of the most memorable. The itinerary was fast-paced – I needed a rest when I arrived back home! – but unbeatable in terms of sheer variety and fun. It’s also inexpensive.

Other small group travel companies for singles over 50: Intrepid and G Adventures

In the interests of transparency, I confess that I have not yet travelled with G Adventures or Intrepid. However, I know people who have used both companies and would travel with them again.

The main reason that I have given them a wide berth is that their portfolio has been geared towards the 18-30 crowd.

However, in the last few years, both companies have expanded the breadth of their offerings to attract older customers, with a higher comfort level and premium accommodation. Because of this shift in focus, Intrepid and G Adventures are now credible group travel options for singles over 50 .

Cost-wise they are very comparable

Finally, let’s take a brief look at two other types of group travel for singles: overlanding and bus tours.

Overlanding Group Travel

Don’t expect 5-star hotels on overlanding group tours. By day, you are likely to be travelling in a converted truck.  By night, you’ll be sleeping under canvas or in budget hotels .

Group participation is the norm. You will be expected to roll up your sleeves, from cooking to pitching your own tent.

However, if you don’t mind more basic conditions and getting stuck in, overlanding is an effective way of covering a lot of ground on a modest budget, especially across vast swathes of Africa, Asia and South America.

And as all meals are usually included, budgeting is easier .

Overlanding is not for me – I’m not keen on their larger group sizes – but may be an option for those seeking more adventurous travel.

33% of travellers with Dragoman , the most well-known overlanding group travel company, were 25 – 44 and 42.5% were between 45 to 64 years old. (AITO data 2018).

Bus Tour Group Travel

At the budget end of the market, bus tour group travel has much in common with overlanding trips.

Group sizes tend to be large and lively. Accommodation is basic which is reflected in their price. The guides are not always locals.

Two of the big players in the budget bus tour market – Topdeck and Contiki – cater to 18 -30 / 35-year-old travellers only.

Higher-end operators such as Titan Travel , Saga Travel and Trafalgar Tours , offer bus tours that are geared towards older travellers.

Again, group sizes can be large, but the group tours offered by these companies have more of a focus on cultural immersion than partying and include more upscale accommodation.

Group Travel for Single Travellers: Final Thoughts

Sadly, group travel has become synonymous with coachloads of camera-wielding tourists on a mission ‘to do’ a country in a few weeks. This is not necessarily the case.

Yes; there will be some large coach tours that stick to this traditional model of group travel. Equally, there will always be travellers who want to tick off tourist destinations en masse and be taken to restaurants serving familiar food.

I’m not passing judgment on this. What I am saying is that small group travel offers an alternative to travelling in a coach with 40 other travellers. They aim to offer more authentic travel experiences , use local guides and have better eco-credentials.

If you are contemplating travelling alone for the first time, joining a small group tour is an excellent way of doing this in a safe and supported way. Just make sure that you do your homework before handing over any of your hard-earned cash.

Even though I am a seasoned independent mature solo traveller, I would have no hesitation in booking another small group tour. Based on my experiences, as a solo traveller in my 50s, I would look at Explore or Exodus Travels in the first instance, followed by Intrepid and G Adventures.

If you are unsure if group travel is a good fit for you, take a look at my assessment of the pros and cons of group tours . Or if you are figuring out how to choose your perfect tour, take a look at my small group travel checklist.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, sadly not that many. Just a trip to Scotland. But I have started to look at UK group tours because of the assurances given if the coronavirus disrupts travel plans.

14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

mature singles travel groups

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made itinerary options that can be adapted to suit your group's comfort level. Intrepid's Accessible Tours are especially inclusive, with trips that are designed for every type of traveler. Whichever trip you decide to book, you'll have access to local destination specialists to help you choose the perfect places to stay as well as organize transportation, activities, and guided tours, depending on your needs. The company's Walking & Trekking trips, suitable for a range of fitness levels, are especially popular with seniors, though adults of all ages are free to join in.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. Prices cover hotel accommodations, guided sightseeing tours, baggage handling, and the expertise of tour directors and driver guides. Destinations include Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, North America, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, and the company arranges travel for popular events such as the Rose Parade in California. A number of river cruise and transatlantic sailing options are also available.

Grand European Travel

Grand European Travel is an AARP-preferred travel provider (check the website for members-only discounts) that promotes itself as a one-stop shop to help clients plan their desired travel experiences. The company represents a collection of 30 travel brands — including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours — which, altogether, cover seven continents. Offerings range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. Thinking of taking a multigenerational trip? Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

Best for Ages 35-50 : El Camino Travel

Courtesy of Encounter Travel

According to El Camino Travel ’s founder, Katalina Mayorga, elder millennials are their strongest customer base. That means if you were born between 1980 and 1985 approximately, you’ll find yourself among curious, like-minded solo travelers looking to immerse themselves in destinations like Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, and the Eastern European nation of Georgia. Some trips even add a professional photographer to capture shareable shots so you can remain in the moment.

All of El Camino’s guided, small group trips max out at 12 participants. They’re also curated with an ethos of preserving and protecting local culture, the environment, and communities. For example, some of their partners include the Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville in Tobago and La Sierra Artist Residency in Santa Marta, Colombia.

Best Sustainable : G Adventures

Courtesy of Intrepid Travel

G Adventures is particularly known for its sustainable, responsible ethos. The company works with small, locally-owned hotels and operators to ensure your travel dollars benefit the community you’re visiting; outlines policies around child and animal welfare practices; aims to reduce single-use plastics, and works to ensure experiences taking place in Indigenous communities align with community goals.

Founded in 1990, G Adventures specializes in small group adventure tours to a host of destinations from Asia to South America and Africa to the Arctic. Nearly half of the travelers on every trip are flying solo, and there’s no single supplement if you choose to bunk with a same-sex roommate. Or, select your own room for a fee.

A Chief Experience Officer leads each group tour and itineraries are searchable by travel style. For example, find wellness-centric trips like nine days of daily yoga, visits to Hindu temples, and partake in traditional healing ceremonies in Bali. Or travel with their partner, National Geographic, for an exclusive guided tour of South Africa’s Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and a visit to Soweto township in Johannesburg, the home of Nelson Mandela.

G Adventures partnered with hostel booking service Hostelworld in 2021 to launch its Roamies itineraries. Its combination of backpacking and organized travel itineraries includes countries like Albania, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Vietnam. The trips are marketed to 18- to 35-year-olds, though like-minded individuals keen on budget travel and communal environments may enjoy these trips, too.

Best for True Solo Travel : Black Tomato

Courtesy of G Adventures

Black Tomato specializes in bespoke luxury travel experiences. For those interested in traversing around the world solo and willing to pay a premium for tailored itineraries, its adventurous or culturally immersive experiences may just be your ticket.

Your travels might look like hiking and biking in Patagonia, embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage through Bhutan and India, chasing glaciers and geysers in Iceland, or learning to cook Georgia and Armenia’s local dishes or Japan’s regional cuisine.

In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With the support of a dedicated team, and without prior knowledge of where they're headed, Get Lost participants will find their way home from an undisclosed location. The location is selected based on a pre-travel questionnaire about which environment clients would like to immerse themselves in. Then, they show up at the airport and the adventure begins.

Best for Ages 25-39 : For The Love of Travel

Courtesy of Contiki

With 80 percent of individuals traveling with For The Love of Travel jet -setting solo, each trip is packed with opportunities to meet fellow Millennial and Gen Z travel enthusiasts. For example, within your small “crew” of up to 14 people, make new friends doing snow sports and unwinding in saunas in Lapland or devouring tacos and sipping mezcal in Mexico City. Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.

According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.”

In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.

FTLOT requires an initial deposit and allows installment payments if not paid in full.

Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.

Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.

The company offers a free Roommate Matching Program which helps you find a like-minded, same-sex roommate. If they can’t find a match, your single supplement is deducted. Small group sizes typically average 13 travelers.

Overseas Adventure Travel won the Solo Travel Award for Best Tour in 2017 and 2018, thanks in large part to its policy of offering a limited number of single spaces for each itinerary.

Best Female : Wild Women Expeditions

Courtesy of Overseas Adventure Travel

It began as an all-women, Canada-based canoe tripping company in 1991, and Wild Women Expeditions is perfect for boundary-pushing women who want to travel independently and enjoy the safety and support of an organized tour. The company also prioritizes hiring female tour leaders and on-the-ground guides. It offers outdoor adventures for women of all ages and identities and with a range of physical abilities (“whether your greatest skill is tracking a storm or talking up a storm, summiting mountains or summoning courage, keeping your kayak in line or coloring outside the lines,” as the company describes).

The company travels to 31 destinations around the world like Egypt, Tanzania, and the Azores islands. Itineraries are typically adventure-based and are filtered on their website by activity, with options ranging from sailing to cycling and horse riding. Imagine yourself sea kayaking and snorkeling in the Galapagos or scaling glaciers in Alaska.

Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. Group sizes are kept small and social with between six and 14 women, depending on the itinerary you choose. The average group size is eight.

Wild Women Expeditions also takes care to curate trips that avoid or minimize the disturbance of wildlife; supports environmental education and advocacy projects; and partners with social justice and women’s rights organizations.

Best for Solo Parent Travel : Intrepid Travel

Courtesy of Wild Women Expeditions

Intrepid ’s family-themed holidays welcome adults traveling with children, including solo parents looking to travel with their kids without the stress of planning and coordinating a trip. Since each family’s travel needs and preferences are different, every itinerary includes an “essential trip information” section where Intrepid outlines whether the trip would be a good fit for you and your kids, as well as a physical rating from least to more strenuous activities.

For example, an itinerary through part of the Amazon Jungle in Peru advises the jungle can be very hot and humid, and that the weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. On the other hand, an 11-day trip to Borneo island in Southeast Asia lists a minimum age of 5 and outlines a range of accommodations from hotels to guesthouses and jungle camps; on a few occasions, travel times between destinations range between four to five hours. Trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania, China, and Morocco are also listed.

Individuals under 17 years typically receive a 10 percent discount, and the company requires that adults have at least one child under 18 years traveling with them. As part of Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, itineraries support initiatives surrounding sustainability and conservation, climate education, and preservation of Indigenous culture.

Travelling single? Small group travel could be just the ticket

Is a Japanese onsen calling you? Or maybe a flavour-packed taco in the streets of Mexico City has your name on it? Whether you’re travelling solo, single or simply can’t be labelled, our small group tours are the perfect way to explore a destination and meet like-minded people. While our tours aren’t exclusively for single travellers in their 50s or 60s , you'll be part of a small group of intergenerational, adventure-hungry individuals who are just as keen to explore as you are. From swapping anecdotes over Aperols on the Amalfi Coast to late-night chats under the desert skies of Wadi Rum, it’s often those moments of connection – big and small – that are most memorable.

Perks of travelling single with Intrepid

Travellers toasting on an Intrepid tour in Morocco

Single and keen to mingle?

Our trips can be great for singles over 50 and 60 as we take care of safety, logistics and transport so you can focus your time on the joy of travel. We don’t offer the classic ‘singles-only’ tours, but we do provide the perfect base for people looking to get to know others, usually a varied mix of ages, nationalities, cultures and more. Since our tours are so diverse, this could mean you’re on a trip with couples in their 40s, singles in their 20s, family groups or people travelling on their own in their fifties and beyond. Our tours aren’t specifically designed for making perfect matches, but hey, if it happens, it happens .

Small numbers, big sites

The best part of travelling in a small group is the friends you can make in the most unlikely of places – we’re talking while hiking the Inca Trail or cooking dhal in  Sri Lanka . It also means a bunch of new faces to share the world’s most epic experiences with and a few people around to watch your back (especially when walking through a traffic crossing in Vietnam ). No matter who you’re sharing your tour with, you’ll be docking at unbelievable sites, meeting local people and getting a one-of-a-kind journey - single or not, we think that's pretty epic.

Safety and logistics

Travelling solo at any age can feel like a big deal, especially when venturing to far-off places. That’s why small group tours are the perfect fit, no matter if you’re travelling alone at 25 or 65. We’ll do the planning, manage the itinerary, handle the transport and keep safety in mind - all so you can immerse yourself to the max. Not to mention, your guide will be able to support you with potential language barriers, give recommendations, show you the best spots for photos and so much more. Don’t just take our word for it, find out for yourself.

A leader talking with travellers on the Italian Coast

Local knowledge and unique perspectives

Maybe you’ve already seen the big sites and now looking for a different experience or new perspective. That’s where we come in. Our tours are led by our Local Leaders, all of whom are experts in their corner of the world and are out there showing it to others right now. Their knowledge of their country’s attractions, delicacies, cultures and communities is something you probably won’t get to experience elsewhere. Find yourself ducking into unknown hotspots and learning more than just the basics when you’re on one of our tours.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

Traveling alone can be intimidating, especially if you’ve reached your 50s and have never traveled alone. I took my first solo trip when I was 35, fell in love with travel, and never looked back.

Planning trips for singles over 50 can be overwhelming. Where do you go? Who do you go with? And what should you be adding to your travel itinerary on a day-to-day basis?

I’m here to help you with ideas on how to plan vacations for singles over 50. If you’re not quite there yet, be sure to check out my travel tips for singles over 40 .

You may be heading abroad by yourself, but there’s no need to feel alone in this venture. I’ve been doing it for years and encountered the most incredible experiences because of it.

Here’s what you need to know about the best trips for singles over 50.

There are a variety of challenges that present themselves when you’re traveling as a single person over the age of 50. Here are a few travel options that could make the whole experience less stressful.

Encounters Travel ✔️ Private & Small Group Focus ✔️ 20 Years Experience ✔️ Range of Tours

Organizing an entire trip alone can be stressful if you’re not the planning type. But the good news is that you don’t have to do it alone.

You may not have to do it at all. For those who are not great planners, joining already organized travel groups for singles over 50 is a great way to go.

There are plenty of companies that allow you to book all-inclusive trips. Flights, accommodation, activities, and sometimes even your meals are included. This takes all the pressure off of you.

I have traveled solo with G Adventures and Explore several times and always had a great experience. The age range of attendees is very broad but single travelers account for the majority of people who travel with both companies.

G Adventures does not charge a single supplement, makes it easy to get your own room and is particularly focussed on female solo travelers.

Explore has a dedicated section on its website for Over 50s solo holidays that covers everything you need to know about its most popular solo trips for this age group.

Solo Female Travelers Club is a community of more than 90,000, run by the fantastic travel bloggers Meg and Mar. The heart of the community is their Facebook group, which has some great information and is the perfect way to meet other females interested in traveling solo.

Meg and Mar also run female-only small group tours that range from luxury retreats to adventurous expeditions in some awesome locations.

Intrepid Travel has more than 1000 itineraries and covers over 100 countries. They also have different comfort levels for their trips – Basix, Comfort or Original which is a combination of the two.

Again, if you are willing to share your room, there is no single supplement and the cost for a private room is relatively small.

Intrepid says that about half of the people on their trips are traveling solo . Like Explore, they have a dedicated section for solo travelers on their website and versions of their trips designed specifically for singles for popular destinations like Costa Rica and Peru.

Encounters Travel is an Australian based travel company that designs its trips exclusively for solo travelers. One of their key points of difference is that Encounter Travel promises small groups of travelers of similar age groups.

For American solo travelers, Overseas Adventure travel focuses on solo travelers over 50. As you may have guessed from the name, many of their trips are quite adventurous. However, they provide detailed information on the trips and the fitness levels required to ensure you find the trip that works for you.

This company puts aside a certain number of single spaces for each of its tours. These spaces mean that solo travelers either aren’t charged for a single supplement or it is at a discount. Overseas Adventure Travel has a roommate matching service if those spaces are filled.

If you want to travel with other females and have an adventure, check out Wild Women Expeditions . This company focuses on destinations that may be daunting for a female solo traveler such as Tanzania or getting to say Alaska and getting around. The focus of their itineraries is outdoor adventures.

And Just You travel is specifically designed for singles travel.

Being single doesn’t mean you have to travel alone. Plenty of people well into their 50s are keen to explore the world and looking for a travel buddy. If reaching out to your friends proves unsuccessful, venture into an online community.

These often come in the form of Facebook groups that allow you to chat about your travel plans and meet up with others who are planning the same thing. Three that I recommend are:

  • Solo Travel Society
  • Girls About the Globe – Solo Female Travel
  • Solo Female Travelers – First FB Group for female solo travelers

Traveling alone comes with many perks. The main one is that you never have to compromise. Do what you want to do, when you want to do it. And if you decide you’d like to extend your trip by a week or two, or even a couple of months, you won’t interrupt anyone else’s schedule.

It’s actually one of the most liberating things to do. Whether you decide on a solo spa break or an adventurous year-long globe-trotting trip, you will end it feeling fulfilled.

With a little extra cash in your pockets than you had in your 20s, traveling in your 50s can be even more exciting than when you were younger. You can finally get to all the places you intended to go to.

If you’ve been to all the destinations on top of your bucket list , I’ve got a few more for you to consider.

After all, your tastes change as you get older. A full moon party in Thailand might not be the epic adventure you once envisioned, but there’s plenty more on offer. So here are some of the best 50s-friendly travel destinations.

Japan is famed for its traditional arts, distinctive gardens, and numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you’re visiting to see the awe-inspiring cherry blossoms in full bloom, visiting during April is a must.

These are a few of the top things to do in Japan.

A tea ceremony in Kyoto is all you need for a relaxing start to your trip. Learn about traditional Japanese teas and the process used to make them during the ceremony. Once the tea master has demonstrated matcha tea preparation (a powdered green tea), you’ll make it for yourself.

You’ll also learn about the spiritual benefits of drinking matcha tea while you savor every last drop.

Take a scenic train ride alongside the Hozu River. The views are spectacular as you pass through mountains in the Hozukyo Ravine. During the trip you’ll get a chance to hop off and sail down the Hozu River in a boat, providing you with views from a completely different angle.

Taking a train through Japan is possibly the best and most relaxing way to enjoy the country’s incredible scenery. Some other fantastic options in Japan are to spend a day in Tokyo , visit beautiful Kanazawa or take the Nakasendo Trail .

Antarctica may not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of vacation destinations for your 50s, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a desirable option.

Take a voyage through the icy water of the Antarctic to experience what few others have. These voyages are usually all-inclusive, which takes a lot of strain out of the planning. Most of them allow for a stop off at some point, so you won’t just witness the ice, you’ll experience it first hand.

You’re likely to see a myriad of wildlife you won’t find anywhere else in the world and few have ventured to see. The Antarctic holds a variety of unique adventures that, in your 50s, you have to experience.

⇒ There are some other destinations that I have visited that I think are particularly good for solo travelers over 50 due to their friendliness and safety levels. Some of my favourites are New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in Canada, Medellin in Colombia, Verbier in Switzerland , Iceland , Riga in Latvia , Edinburgh and Glasgow , Bali , Nepal and Melbourne , Sydney and Perth in Australia.

Lonely girl with suitcase at country road dreaming about travel.

Costa Rica is home to 6% of the world’s biodiversity, making it one of the best places to go for wildlife viewing. But if you’re still young at heart, it’s also one of the best places to go for a heart-pumping adventure.

Trek along the trails of La Fortuna , visit an aboriginal village, hike over lava fields, and come to the best viewing point in the La Fortuna area. Take in the stunning views of the cascading 70-metre high waterfall and make your way across a suspension bridge.

All the while taking in the wonderful diversity of the lush vegetation surrounding you. This is certainly an experience for nature-lovers, although most of Costa Rica is.

Taking a tour of the jungle at night is even more exciting than it is during the daytime. All of your senses are heightened. Hear sounds of the nocturnal creatures, and maybe even spot a few glowing eyes in the darkness.

You’ll venture deep into the rainforests of Rainmaker Park where species that were previously thought to be extinct are being rediscovered. Your naturalist guide will point out snakes, frogs, salamanders, lizards, owls, birds, and many other wonderful nocturnal creatures.

For those of you who are still hungry for adventure and an adrenaline rush, ziplining through the rainforests of Costa Rica has to be on your itinerary.

To get there you’ll enjoy a scenic drive through volcanoes, plantations, and the jungle, taking in all Costa Rica has biodiversity.

You’ll then zip-line through the jungle, seeing waterfalls and stopping off at the Arenal Volcano hot springs along the way.

A colourful history has left Scotland with castles and military fortresses all over the country. It has also kept up with the times and has some fantastic food (and of course whiskey) and some great spas.

If you’re ready to explore thick woodlands, rolling farmlands, and a destination with a fascinating story, Scotland is waiting for you.

best things to do in scotland highlands

Ready to explore the home of the Loch Ness Monster? The Caledonian Canal is a tranquil body of water that provides stunning views of the surrounding area. Taking a cruise on the Caledonian Canal provides you with views of the beautiful Great Glen, as well as long-standing Aldourie Castle.

If you like to dive head-first into a destination’s history, exploring the vaults under Edinburgh’s Old Town is a must. These vaults were built in the 18th century and held murderers and witches.

You’ll even see the location where “witches” were persecuted all those years ago.

edinburgh-vaults

If you like all things dark and creepy or are fascinated by the customs of years gone by, this is a tour you cannot pass up in Scotland.

Edinburgh Castle is one of the most popular fortifications in the country. The castle has been around for over 3000 years and helped shape the history of Scotland. Take a tour of the castle to learn about its hidden mysteries.

A guide will teach you everything you need to know about the history of the castle and take you to the must-see locations in the fortress. After that, you can set out to explore for yourself.

Scotland is a great place to hire a car as a solo traveler and explore less visited areas like Ayrshire or Dumfries and Galloway. Glasgow is a super friendly town and a great spot for single travelers. I would highly recommend having at least 7 days or 10 days in Scotland.

If you’re looking for more luxurious singles vacations over 50 options check out the fantastic Girls Guide to Paris.  Girls’ Guide to Paris & Beyond is a boutique female-owned company specializing in solo-travel for women-only.

As a Francophile and someone who owns homes in France, Doni Belau started her company with a focus on La Belle France and is now expanding worldwide with tours to Italy , Bali , japan , and Morocco in 2020 as well as a myriad of “off the beaten path” luxurious tours in France.

Doni says, “Girls’ Guide to Paris & Beyond is an invitation to travel with me in a small group (no more than 12) and explore another part of the world while we explore another part of ourselves.” And they have a pretty impressive range of 5 stars only reviews on TripAdvisor.

If you are looking to find other single travelers before your trip try some of the facebook groups for solo travelers. Once you have arrived at a destination, try staying in a hostel, social media, or by joining organised tours and activities.

Traveling only gets more exciting with age. A little more experience under your belt, a taste for the finer things in life, and a maturity that allows you to enjoy the little things – all these factors make traveling as a single person in your 50s a wonderful experience.

I hope I’ve given you some great insights into where you should be traveling next. Whether you’re going it alone or traveling with a group, it’s sure to be one for the memory books.

Adventure Travel Tours for Single Women 50+

Explorer Chick

April 28, 2023

woman hiking alone in winter

Hey, you’ve still got that rock star attitude and lust for adventure and I salute you — whatever age you’re at! But I also hear that planning a single travel tour at 50+ can be intimidating and can look different from the trips the 20-something gals are taking. That doesn’t mean you can’t let your silly side shine and have some fun on the road!

If that midlife crisis is sinking in and you’re ready to prove age really is just a number, then this post is for you.

Who said female travelers have to be in their 20s, anyway??

You’ll learn why some people over 50 decide to become solo travelers, how to arrange to go traveling solo, and get some great trip ideas, about some of the most popular destinations where you can join fellow travelers exploring local culture and enjoying authentic experiences across the world.

Why Solo Journeys Resonate with the Spirited 50+ Crowd

woman solo travel 50+

When we’re in our 20s and 30s we often make grand plans for travel — Norway ! London! Backpacking through Europe! But as the years pass and life gets more complicated, those dreams of seeing the sights and doing all the adventures can take a backseat.

Now, maybe you’ve checked in with yourself and realized it’s time for a change. Good on you! No matter what your reason to travel, there are so many ways you can still enjoy adventure travel in mid-life while traveling solo.

There are several reasons people aged 50+ become solo travelers. Maybe one of these reasons speaks to you:

  • Happy Singleton but need inspiration . For some, living and traveling solo is their bread and butter. But sometimes it’s difficult to decide where to go on a solo vacation, what to do, and how to get there. Joining a small group tour with people of your own age group can be a wonderful experience allowing you to enjoy a stress-free solo trip while someone else handles the details.
  • Divorce. Going through divorce can mean your usual traveling partner is no longer available. Friends and family members might still be coupled up so it’s solo or no go. That’s where divorce vacations come in ????
  • Unwilling Partners. Even in the happiest partnerships don’t necessarily mean that both are like-minded travelers. One might have a stressful job and just want to spend their free time on a relaxing beach holiday while the stay at-home parent would prefer a more adventurous trip like a tour to explore Machu Picchu or maybe somewhere off the beaten track with like-minded people who love intrepid travel.
  • Loss . Losing a partner, friend, or close family member, especially one who enjoyed organized trips can leave the survivors with a renewed sense of mortality and drive to live their best life. This can often lead to some soul searching solo adventures or checking out tour companies who offer options for solo travelers to get back out there.
  • Empty Nesters. As your carefully nurtured children head off to college or a new life away from home with barely a backwards glance, it’s a great time to rediscover yourself. And what better way to do this than by enjoying unforgettable experiences on a solo adventure in great company where you can make new friends?

How to Travel Solo as a 50+ Adventurer

women kayaking in the San Juan Islands

Thanks to the wanderlust trend, adventurous social media influencers, and a more global community there’s less stigma attached to solo travel. While you can still book through regular travel firms, possibly paying hefty single supplement fees, today’s solo traveler has many more options available with tour companies specializing in vacations for the solo traveler.

Whether you want to join a solo travel tour, a ladies’ group, head to popular destinations, or go off the beaten track, I’ve got good news for you: there is a host of vacations for you to choose from. But first, you’ll want to decide on the type of solo adventure you’re going for.

Charting Your Own Path: Independent Solo Journeys

Independent solo adventures

Pros: Exciting, unique, and flexible. Cons: Potentially dangerous. Lots of dull and sometimes confusing and stressful paperwork. Typically more planning time.

Some people like to spend their precious free time relaxing in a hot spring by themselves with a good book and a cocktail. Others prefer to use their vacations as an opportunity to meet new people and socialize. Some people like a little bit of both. If you’re more on the independent side and want to call all the shots, then an independent solo adventure might be just your cup of tea!

Whatever your style, the world is a big place, so consider making a “bucket list” of places you’d like to see. Check government advice on the risks associated with traveling alone to certain countries or regions. Then when you’ve narrowed down the best destination for your first adventure, it’s time to book.

Although it can seem cost effective to book everything separately from your own laptop, it’s often wise to consult a travel agent who can make sure your trip runs seamlessly and can make sure your plans are protected from unexpected events getting in the way (hello, 2020).

Plus, there are a LOT of nitty-gritty details in travel that can feel overwhelming on your own that a travel agent can figure out for you.

Without an agent, you make all your own travel arrangements (transportation, accommodation, experiences, attractions, food, etc.) and have to deal with any delays, booking issues and any situation that arises during your trip. For some, that’s exciting and empowering! For others, that’s a whole lotta headache that ruins the whole point of vacation .

Travel agent or not, these are a few considerations you’ll want to think about before setting off for your first solo trip:

  • You should also ensure you have adequate travel insurance to cover you in case anything happens to either your travel plans or your health.
  • Check if you need visas and apply well in advance if possible. Double check you have the right visa for your visit.
  • Dig out your passport and make sure it’s in date and you have enough time remaining on it to abide by the rules of the destination you are planning to visit. Some countries require you to have as long as 6 months remaining on your passport at the point of entry.
  • Book any necessary vaccinations well in advance and order any meds like Malaria tablets which may be needed, depending on your itinerary. Sometimes even an airport stopover adds a requirement for vaccination in some countries.
  • Change your currency for local currency before you travel as that will give you a better exchange rate and you can usually find deals with low or no commission costs. In some countries, it’s worth having some US dollars – do some research and find out if that applies to your proposed destination.
  • Consider carrying some currency on a special travel card but be aware some very rural areas off the beaten track may not accept the card.

Joining the Pulse: Active Adventure Tours

Active group adventures

Pros: Planned itinerary to make the most of your vacation. Organized adventures. Choose your preferred activity level. Opt for a private room. Meet new friends .

Cons: You don’t get a say in who you travel with. Fewer options for spontaneous experiences.

Group tours can be a great way to share the excitement of adventure tours. You can enjoy all the fun of spending time with other solo travelers during the day but then if you’re on the introverted side, you can still take time for yourself at the end of the day.

All you need to decide is where to go and whether you’d prefer small groups where the solo travelers might bond quickly, or are happy to be part of a larger group where you might have more chance of meeting someone you click with as a friend or maybe even as something more depending on your situation.

Usually you make your own way to the destination, then a guide will run the trip organizing hotels, meals, equipment hire etc.

A few things to keep in mind with this type of travel:

  • Check the tour company details for the trip because many don’t include travel to the meet-up point.
  • Ask about single supplements — some companies offer private rooms as standard while others may charge a single occupancy supplement.

Savoring the Experience: Group Vacation Tours

group vacation tours

Pros: Simple booking with everything organized. Expert guides to maximize the experience. Lots of options to suit all tastes. Perfect if you are flying solo. Cons: Less flexibility than independent travel. Less thrills.

If you’re more of a “boutique hotel” person rather than “bear hunting in the woods” person, a group vacation tour might be the way to go. Imagine a river cruise with great food and drink available pretty much all day.

Vacations should be about enjoying yourself and while for some, the perfect trip is kayaking around the Galapagos Islands , for others it’s relaxing by the pool with a cold drink. Most travel companies now offer a dedicated section for pretty much all vibes.

If this is the direction you’re leaning, these are my tips:

• Check the average group size, especially if you particularly prefer to be part of a small group when traveling solo. • Ask if tips are included so you don’t have any unexpected costs.

Crafting Your Adventure: Organizing a Group Trip

Plan your own group trip

Pros: You know all or most of the group members before traveling. You can do and see exactly what you want with a custom trip. Cons: Trying to get everyone to settle on a mutually acceptable itinerary. You need to form a group yourself.

Maybe you’re a leader type and want to plan your own girl’s trip . When you bring together a group of friends of your choice, you’re guaranteed good company. How cool would it be to share your adventures and explore the world with your besties? (SO cool!)

The hardest part of organizing these kinds of vacations is getting everyone to agree on a destination and activity level. My friend invited two other travelers and me to join her on a cycling tour of Italy once — I love spending time with her and I love Italy, but I was less sure about the cycling bit!

If you want to plan your own trip, try these tips:

• Get everyone to list their favored top trips and see if any coincide • Get everyone together, make a night of it browsing popular tours, and pick out the parts that appeal most to everyone. • Go to a tour operator and have them create a package for you (pssst, Explorer Chick does custom private trips too ????)

Top destinations for single travel tours 50+.

Whether you’re looking for vast spaces to rediscover yourself in, natural wonders to marvel at, or unique destinations to brag about on the ‘gram, there are a multitude of wonderful places across the world to explore.

Here are a few ideas for the single solo female traveler to get your juices flowing:

mature singles travel groups

1 Yellowstone National Park

Hiking, geysers, spectacular views — what more could you ask for? This is a fabulous destination for women over 50 traveling solo who want a memorable trip. Save the legs with some horseback riding and make your trip as long (or as short) as you want it to be. The park is huge and there’s so much to do and see here all year round.

If you’re over 50, the glaciers have diminished in your lifetime but you still have the opportunity to see these majestic natural spectacles. Get up close and personal with a kayak trip to see glaciers and icebergs or get even closer with some ice climbing action.

Or maybe mountains make your heart beat faster (in a good way). There are plenty of volcanic mountains to hike and climb here too. You might even see the Northern Lights.

mature singles travel groups

Dramatic fjords, thousands of islands, and majestic mountains make Norway a top destination for the over 50 explorer and adventurer.

Norway has more unique habitats than almost any European country. In some areas during the summer, the sun never sets in “the land of the midnight sun.” Perfect for hiking, photography, kayaking and climbing.

You’ll also definitely want to make time to meet some of the local people, many of whom have actual Viking heritage!

4 Galapagos

Famous for the huge animal diversity and Darwin’s finches, Galapagos Islands should be on any nature-lover’s bucket list.

This area is a pristine, natural paradise perfect for the over 50 traveler who appreciates learning about unique environments. And if you’re looking to experience a unique environment, the Galapagos is definitely where you want to go — some species there can’t be found anywhere else in the world.

Eco-conscious tourists will be glad to learn that measures are in place to protect the islands so you can enjoy a visit knowing you aren’t damaging the islands or any of the feathered, furry, or scaly residents.

mature singles travel groups

Belize has the lowest population density in Central America so if you are looking for an “off the beaten track” experience, this could be the place for you.

Having said that, Belize also has some fabulous boutique hotels so if you want to travel solo and rest in luxury this is also a great destination. Go snorkeling or diving to explore the huge barrier reef and discover Mayan ruins in the rainforest jungle. There’s no shortage of high adrenaline activities to liven up your life too so you could have plenty of tales of bravery and adventure to tell everyone back at the office and some breathtaking pics to share over your socials.

You might be a Grandma but you don’t have to give up living your best life!

Odyssey was originally developed by a collection of member Universities across Australia, New Zealand and Asia to lead the way in providing escorted, an educational small group tour for mature aged and senior travellers, to unique and intriguing parts of the world with a tour director and tour guide. Today, Odyssey still has an association with universities through the profile of the tour director for each tour group. Simply put, Odyssey Traveller provides holidays with an itinerary for couples and holidays for solo travellers over 50 .

Unique tour format tailored for Mature & Senior travellers

Tours typically span between two to three weeks in duration. An Odyssey small group tour seeks to stay typically 2 to 3 nights in each location in good 3 or 4 star hotels. These are an escorted tour that have evolved to be a good blend of touring and seeing. As well as opportunities to spend time in key places to take a half or full day break from the group enabling you should you with to be a solo traveller for a few hours or explore with a travelling companion a particular place or take time out for a break, before we travel on to our next destination. For the solo traveller , Odyssey has a expansive range of holidays for solo travellers over 50 to choose from, though we do not offer a regular river cruise or a dedicated solos holiday or solo travel tours.

For the solo traveller there is a single supplement charged on all of Odyssey Travellers small group tour programs. There are no additional charges made any client booking holidays for solo travellers over 50 years of age, just the single supplement , we like to keep a level of transparency in the prices charged.

Therefore, your travelling companions are sure to share your interests. They will want similar experiences in an environment of mutual understanding. We design all programs with the mature traveller in mind. Travelling solo does not mean travelling alone, so when there’s free time to explore you’re sure to have another solo traveler or couple ready to join you if you wish. Single travelers make about a third of our groups and many a repeat travelers!

All Odyssey Traveller participants want more than just a blur of museums and monuments. We work to create a lively learning experience and cover some of the world’s most fascinating destinations and authentic cultural experiences. We are also, of course, aware of your need for free-time, so many of our itineraries allowing space for you to explore, or simply relax on your own.

Odyssey is focused on the cost of our tours to ensure our prices represent good value to our customers.

Odyssey offers a collection of genuine small group tour(s) Odyssey tours are priced to reflect that these are small group tours. Typically this means you are part of a small group of 6 to 12 people, not part of a group of 18 or more. Small group means you and fellow traveller enjoying an evening meal around one dinner table. So, we do not achieve the economies of scale of 18 plus on a coach that a larger tour operator would offer, because this is not the type of trip or touring experience our clients seek from us.

Odyssey tours are genuinely based around;

  • A Small group tour of less than 18 people for the mature traveller as holidays for a couple and holidays for solo travellers over 50.
  • Knowledgeable local expert guides and a great tour leader who has an interest in the theme of the tour.
  • Inclusive pricing, including all entrances, tipping and the majority of meals included. That means, no hidden extras with respect to cost. Transparent pricing of the single supplement for the single traveller.
  • A learning based escorted tour with a like minded fellow traveller.
  • Accommodation in 3 & 4 star hotels and self catering apartments.
  • A blend of group learning, touring activities and free time to explore a place further, whether on a discovery or walking holiday program.
  • No name badges or flags to follow when out and about.
  • Travel to places that extend your learning and curiosity, often where others will not follow.
  • Spending typically between 60 to 85% of the operating cost of the tour in the country visited, benefiting the local communities directly.

An Odyssey escorted tour is based around the premise that you pay less in comparison to a similar small group tour offering. You can make all the arrangements by e-mail, web chat, direct on- line or by mail or telephone from the comfort of your own home. Odyssey arranges everything from educational content, accommodation, to meals, field trips and coach or train travel. We also market directly to you with no hidden extras. We’re also happy to help with advice on every aspect of your trip, whether it be tips on what to pack, to the fitness level required for a walking holiday. Additionally, we can assist with your flights and travel insurance requirements, at your request. If you are travelling solo and wish to share with another single traveler we can assist with pairing you up, just let us know when booking your trip.

Adventure holidays for single travellers over 50

The world's a big place - where are you yet to explore? Our  Cultural Discovery  group adventure trips allow you to discover a new destination beyond just its tourist attractions - you'll learn about its history and culture through visits to historic sites and experiences, as well as meeting, and often even staying with, local people or tribes. Wherever you choose to go, you'll be made to feel welcome and truly at home with friendly like-minded people, and all at a pace that suits you. Cuba is one of our most popular destinations, particularly for solo travellers over 50, and it's so easy to see why. Whether you take our faster-paced  Cuba Libre!  group adventure holiday, or take a slower pace while you see  The Best of Western Cuba , this colourful and captivating country will amaze you at every corner, with vintage cars and rum bars lining the streets of vibrant Havana, pastel-coloured historic buildings and rich culture in Santiago De Cuba, and the story of Che Guevara to be discovered in Santa Clara. Should you wish to adventure a little closer to home, our moderately and relaxed pace group adventure trips to Europe and Turkey could be just the ticket. It may be the world's smallest continent, but Europe offers some of the richest experiences to be found anywhere on the globe - from admiring the  Highlights of Andalucia , to immersing yourself in the historical  Treasures of Turkey . If you're looking to be truly dazzled on your solo adventure on one of our group trips, let the magic of Iceland and its natural wonders amaze you on our Land of the Midnight Sun  trip, or seize the chance to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights on our winter itinerary - surely an experience that everyone has on their Bucket List.
