Dandy Lichious

(Ger Lyons)

Dundalk, March 31st

There were plenty of big reputations heading into the opening all-weather two-year-old maiden of the season at Dundalk, and the Willie Browne-trained winner Buyin Buyin may be Royal Ascot-bound this summer. Dandy Lichious was safely held in fifth, beaten six and a quarter lengths, but he did show some promise in defeat and can be expected to improve a fair deal. He sat well off the pace and looked a little green when the tempo lifted, but he went past the line like one who should be all the better for the experience. Speaking in a recent TDN stable tour, his trainer Ger Lyons had flagged up that the Dandy Man colt “has been standing on his hind legs telling me he is ready to run since Christmas Day”, but “he’s not as ready as he thinks he is”. He can win a maiden when getting it all together. (MB)

Tom The Second

(Johnny Murtagh)

It’s likely that the extended-mile-and-a-quarter maiden run at Dundalk on Friday of last week was an above-average event for the venue at this time of year. The Ballydoyle-trained pair of San Antonio and Cape Bridgewater filled the first two places, while third-placed Just An Hour, trained by Joseph O’Brien, had shown plenty of promise on his debut at the track in December. Further down the field in sixth, Johnny Murtagh’s representative Tom The Second showed ability despite being beaten 10 and a half lengths. He might just have a lacked a gear over this trip and should stay a mile and a half on this evidence. There is a mix of speed and stamina in his pedigree, being out of a six-furlong two-year-old winner, who is a half-sister to Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente. Expect Tom The Second to sharpen up for this initial experience and go on to better things this summer. (MB)

(Aidan O’Brien)

Leopardstown, April 2nd

There was definite improvement from Warm Heart’s debut fourth at Dundalk in November when second to well-regarded winner Curvature in the opening fillies’ mile maiden at Leopardstown last Sunday. Bred to be useful as a sister to Group 3/listed runner-up Celestial Object out of triple Australian Group 1-winning mare Sea Siren, she was well placed given how the race unfolded but her lack of experience may have counted against her at the death on heavy ground. She should have more to offer next time for Aidan O’Brien. (MB)

Persian Jewel

(Paddy Twomey)

In the same maiden, Persian Jewel finished three and a half lengths behind Warm Heart but can be expected to finish much closer if renewing rivalry with that filly next time. The Paddy Twomey-trained three-year-old by Showcasing missed the kick, which proved a hindrance in a race where nothing off the pace threatened the one-two, who filled those positions throughout. However, she made lovely progress late in the day to run on for third and the stable’s runners have the potential to improve from their debut efforts. She looks another future maiden winner in waiting and has a solid enough pedigree, being out of a 92-rated Galileo mare. (MB)

(Shane Crawley)

Leopardstown, April 2n d

Karlsberg ran a fine race on her seasonal debut in a mile handicap at Leopardstown last Sunday. Sat in third, well off a hot pace set by Eastern Wind and Princess Rajj, she had no answer to the Cristal Cleere when that rival surged to the front in the straight, but it was admirable the way she fought on for second, with it looking highly likely she was a sitting duck for those coming from off the pace. The winner and third came back to finish first and second in different races here on Wednesday so the form looks solid. Shane Crawley’s mare should come on for this now, and significantly this was just her second start over a mile, so she has further scope to progress. (RG)

Valiant King

(Joseph O’Brien)

Despite being hit with a 6lb rise for a near miss at Leopardstown last Sunday, it should not take long for Valiant King to break his duck for Joseph O’Brien and Qatar Racing. He showed some potential when third in a Killarney maiden and fourth at the Curragh last July/August, and had been off for 225 days prior to his comeback in this mile-and-a-quarter handicap off 83 on heavy ground. Signora Bellissima made all and wasn’t for catching on the front end, but it is to Valiant King’s credit that he managed to only be denied by a short-head as he powered home strongly from off the pace, having lost ground when slowly into stride early on. The pair pulled five lengths clear of the rest, and the runner-up can prove better than this level of form in the fullness of time. (MB)

Wild Dollar

(Eddie and Patrick Harty)

Leopardstown, April 5th

In a race where it paid to race close up with the pace, Wild Dollar very much caught the eye with his surging late run from the back to finish third to Cristal Cleere in a 10-furlong handicap at Leopardstown on Wednesday. The five-year-old was notably well backed for the two-mile handicap hurdle here on St Stephen’s Day when he finished eighth, while he bled when disappointing on his penultimate start. This was much better back on the level and on this evidence, Eddie and Patrick Harty’s five-year-old looks well up to scoring off a mark of 79. (RG)

Hutton Glen

Bellewstown, April 6th

Hutton Glen was a notable maiden runner for owner/breeder John Donohue, as a son of his admirable mare Lagostovegas, and he ran a fine race on debut, keeping on nicely to take third in the mile maiden won by Fast Tara at Bellewstown on Thursday. Bellewstown can be a difficult track to negotiate for a newcomer but the Ger Lyons-trained gelding acquitted himself well and should benefit from the experience. He is by Aclaim, so there is plenty of speed in his pedigree, but his dam was a real stayer, having won the Ascot Stakes, so it might be over middle distances that we see the best of him. (RG)

(Edward O’Grady)

Clonmel, April 6th

Marciano caught the eye when making his debut in a maiden hurdle at Clonmel on Thursday. At 22/1 shot, Edward O’Grady’s gelding pulled hard early on, showing clear signs of inexperience, however he was still in contention with the main group heading into the straight. His earlier exertions eventually told on the heavy ground and he faded to finish fifth, 14 lengths off the winner Feu De Bresil, but this was a decent first effort. His dam has produced three multiple winners and is a half sister to Colonel Braxton. (RG)

Sam’s Xpress

(Kieran Cotter)

Sam’s Xpress looked like the winner for most of his five-furlong rated race at Bellewstown on Thursday, only to give way to Polar Bear and Escaping Thejungle late in the day. This was still a pleasing effort by Kieran Cotter’s three-year-old who arrived here on a hat-trick after back-to-back impressive wins at Dundalk. He made all for both of those wins, which is what he tried to do here, and it seems likely the heavy ground prevented him from really kicking away from his rivals. However, he showed that mark of 76 is warranted and he will be a significant threat when he gets a decent draw at a turning track on better ground. (RG)

Wandering Eyes

Ger Lyons has been competing at the top table of Irish racing for well over a decade and recorded breakthrough Classic success in 2020 when Siskin stormed to Irish 2,000 Guineas glory under Colin Keane at the Curragh. The pair didn't have to wait long to record their second when, just five weeks later, Even So (Ire) ( Camelot {GB}) landed the Irish Oaks. Lyons has a typically-strong team of older horses to go to war with this season. Tough Talk and Hellsing appear to be the pick of the three-year-old colts while Zarinsk, Amazing Show and Mauiewowie are just a handful of three-year-old fillies that the trainer is looking forward to this term. As well as an array of classy older types, Lyons has a galaxy of well-bred youngsters to unleash this term, but revealed that he will be adopting a kinder approach with his two-year-olds this term. He said, “I won't have my first two-year-old runners until April. I am letting them grow in front of my eyes and cuddling them along. You can see them growing week after week at this time of year and we haven't dipped any of our two-year-olds yet.” In the first edition of TDN Europe's stable tour series that will concentrate on two-year-old talent, Lyons has put forward 14 juveniles to note ahead of the new season as well as outlining plans for some of his older horses below.

Hellsing: a smart prospect | Racingfotos.com

Two-Year-Olds Name: Quadruple Breeding: Frankel (GB) filly out of Soffia (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) Purchaser: Homebred Owner: Juddmonte Comment: She's a lovely and straightforward filly. We are not rushing any two-year-olds this year and will let them come to themselves in their own time. She is only new to me but she seems very straightforward and anyone who has ridden her has been pretty excited by what they are feeling. You'd like to think she could be smart.

Halberd Showcasing (GB) colt out of Battlement (GB) (Dansili {GB}) Juddmonte He is a lovely grey horse. His dam is a half to Logician and he looks a smart, precocious type. He'd look an early sort and he'll tell me when he's ready. He's very straightforward and, at this early stage, he's one I like-but that could be the kiss of death!

Bellezza Siyouni (Fr) filly out of Terrific (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) Moyglare Stud A lot of quality and by the right type of sire. She has a lot of size and scope, as her brother Tough Talk (Ire) ( Kingman {GB}) has, and he would be one of our big bullets to fire in the three-year-old ranks this year. She has grown humongously-she was big when we got her but she is still growing and filling into herself. I'm letting her come in her own time but she is as sweet as a nut and is definitely one that's exciting us.

General Assembly Starspangledbanner (Aus) colt out of Black Rodded (GB) Bahamian Bounty {GB}) Bought by Richard Ryan for 130,000gns at the Somerville Sale at Tattersalls from Ballyhimikin Stud Teme Valley He has been a very professional horse since the day he walked into the yard. He came in with a tall reputation for being the pick of the Somerville Sale and is just an awesome Railway-type horse who is just oozing quality. He will be as early as I need him to be and could be a Royal Ascot two-year-old. That's the type of horse we view him as if he keeps doing what he is doing. Everything comes so easy to him. But, again, I haven't dipped any of my two-year-olds so I don't know how good or bad they are, but I would be very positive about this colt. Richard Ryan bought him-he bought Rocking Tree as well-and he buys a nice type. He bought Hellsing (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), who was a very good two-year-old and one we're looking forward to for this year so, if he keeps sending us horses like that, we'll be very happy.

Rocking Tree Kodiac (GB) colt out of Rocktique (Rock Hard Ten) Bought by Richard Ryan at Goffs Orby Sale from Glenvale Stud for €130,000 Teme Valley Kodiac has been a phenomenal success and has even surprised me by how he has kept improving. This is a fine stamp of a Kodiac-strong, but not typical in that he has plenty of size and scope about him. He's very straightforward and has a good mind. He could be anything. Again, he was bought by Richard Ryan so, if he continues to buy that type of horse for us, he can fill the yard.

Beauty Thunder Night Of Thunder (IIre) colt out of Tawayna (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) Bought at Goffs Orby from Yeomanstown Stud for €100,000 by Gaelic Bloodstock Beauty Stable By one of my favourite sires, Night Of Thunder (Ire). You would think that he lacked size when we bought him but, the few colts that I have bought by the sire, they all looked on the small size at the sales. I said to myself, 'if he's like the ones I bought, he'll come,' and he's just to die for. Back in January, I was thinking that he was still on the small side but he is starting to sprout now and he's typical of the colts that I have had by Night Of Thunder. I should say that it is untypical of Thunder Kiss (Ire), who is by Night Of Thunder as well, but this lad is showing all the right qualities. I could see him being a nice two-year-old for the middle part of the season. We have had a lot of luck for this owner but they buy for Hong Kong, so the horses spend their two-year-old career with us before moving over there. That's what they like to do and the dream is to find them a Hong Kong Derby horse.

Unnamed Zoustar (Aus) colt out of Ainippe (Ire) (Captain Rio {GB}) Bought by David Redvers at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale for £70,000 from Furnace Mill Stud Richard Pegum Richard has had horses with me before through David Redvers and the obvious connection with this colt is that we trained his dam, Anippe. She was a very smart and fast filly. I've never had a Zoustar before this season and now I have a few of them in the yard. They are the most gorgeous physicals and this one is most gorgeous as well. He goes very well and would be a better-looking horse than his mother was. Zoustar is rocking the world down under in Australia and, again, I think they will need their time but this lad is more precious than the others. At this moment in time, you'd love what he is doing.

Unnamed Blue Point (Ire) filly out of Cosmic Love (GB) ( Sea The Stars {Ire}) Bought by Grassick Bloodstock and Ronan Fitzpatrick at Goffs Orby Sale for €300,000 from Kilminfoyle House Stud Mark Dobbin We are going with Blue Point because he seems to be a first-season sire who is ticking all the right boxes. We're very positive about the ones that we have by him. She wouldn't be the biggest filly but hopefully she comes a bit in size. There's something about her that we like and she looks precocious. I would say she cost enough, but they were the sales everyone was operating in last year. Winning a maiden won't be good enough to justify her price tag and hopefully she is better than that. The talk on the street would be that Blue Point is doing it and the few that I have would suggest he's going to be alright.

Unnamed Blue Point colt out of Gwael (A P Indy) Bought by Kerri Lyons for 70,000gns out of Genesis Green Stud at Book 2 at Tattersalls Sean Jones, David Spratt and Lynne Lyons Kerri bought him and he's nice. He'd be quite typical of the filly that we have by Blue Point-you could nearly say they are brother and sister. They are doing their thing and the word on the street is quite positive about the stallion but I won't be rushing them. I'd be happy with him at the moment anyway.

Unnamed Phoenix Of Spain (Ire) colt out of Alfea (GB) (Kentucky Dynamite) Bought by Wyanstown House for €34,000 at the 2021 November Foal Sale from Farran House Stud Vincent Gaul He reminds me of a horse I used to train called Gold-Fun (Ire) (Le Vie Dei Colori {GB}), who went on to be a very good horse in Hong Kong. He is a big, strong, powerful beast. I think Vincent Gaul bought him as a foal and there is something about this horse I just love. He can gallop and will be a middle-season plus horse. He'll be a real miler and there's something very taking about him, he does things very easily.

Unnamed Bated Breath (GB) filly out of Rosie Cotton (Ire) (King's Best) Ballygallon Stud A gorgeous filly but more likely to be a three-year-old rather than a two-year-old. She is doing what we are asking her but gives us the impression that she will be lovely for the back end and beyond.

State's Evidence Expert Eye (GB) colt out of Palmette (GB) ( Oasis Dream {GB}) Juddmonte I'd say he's typical of Juddmonte's in that he is smart. I have a very smart bunch for Juddmonte this year- roughly 17 in total-and he would be right up there as being rated among the smartest. He does things very easily and there is a lot of quality about him. He'd be on the A-team at this moment in time.

Dandy Lichious Dandy Man (Ire) colt out of Ana Lichious (Ire) (Makfi {GB}) Patrick Hanlon He will be our earliest runner. He has been standing on his hind legs telling me he is ready to run since Christmas Day! He's not as ready as he thinks he is but he'll be one of our earliest runners and is a good-looking son of Dandy Man. He's not over-big but he is big enough and, as soon as the ground dries up, he'll be out.

Serious Notions Advertise (GB) filly out of Darling Grace (GB) (Nayef) Bought by Kerri Lyons for €68,000 from Kildarragh Stud at Goffs Orby Rick Gaynor A nice filly that Kerri bought. We are liking what we are seeing and is shaping up as a nice filly at the minute anyway. We like to throw six balls up in the air with the fillies that we buy at the sales in the hope that two come down as nice fillies and she could be one of the nicer ones. She looks the part and I hope she is nice because Kerri picked her and she's for a nice owner.

Tough Talk: beating Little Big Bear on debut | Racingfotos.com

Older horses I have a lovely bunch of three-year-olds and up for the season. Of the horses who won their maidens last year, the Amazing Shows (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) of this world, they have all gotten very strong so I have a very exciting batch to look forward to. Zarinsk (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) has already stepped up to Listed class and you'd hope that some of the horses who won their maidens last year can do something similar. After that, you are hoping that they will keep building, that's the dream. Hellsing and Tough Talk would be the outstanding colts. The bubble has not burst on them yet. Tough Talk had a setback last year but he has been in training for quite a while and is one to really look forward to. Hellsing was just denied in the Goffs Million last year but did everything right by us. He is the most gorgeous horse and he will want a mile minimum-he could even be a 10-furlong horse. He could be anything. He outperformed what we thought he would do at two because we always viewed him as an older horse in the making. There is a list of fillies that we are dreaming about and they have all done very well. We pulled up early with Mauiewowie (GB) last year because she won her Stakes race and, typical of Night Of Thunders, we said we'd let her grow. She could be a Commonwealth type of filly and the Lacken Stakes could suit her prior to Ascot. She'll probably be better with a bit of juice in the ground. Here's hoping she steps up to the next level. Amazing Show won her maiden well and the form of that has worked out fantastic. I overfaced her in the Moyglare but, if you look at her now, she's a 500kg filly. That Moyglare entry shows you what I thought of her. While she is a long way shy of that, you'd like to think she can step up to be a Listed/Group 3 filly at a minimum. Cairde Go Deo (Fr) ( Camelot {GB}) is a dream filly. She needed to strengthen up from three to four if she's to get to the next level and I think that she has. I couldn't be happier by how well she has done physically. She could be shy of the top level but we'd be hopeful she can be competitive in Group 2s over a mile-and-a-half to start although she will get further.

Dark 2YOs to follow...

Our team with some dark two-year-olds to add to your My Stable tracker

David Ord and Richard Mann with some dark two-year-olds to add to your My Stable tracker with the autumn and 2020 in mind.

MAIDEN WINNERS

Auxilia - ger lyons.

Just in case we were in any doubt, Ger Lyons is a trainer right out of the very top drawer and Group One success for the high-class Siskin before Mustajeer landed the £1 million Sky Bet Ebor has only underlined that point. Lyons has assembled another strong team of juveniles this summer, headed by Siskin, and Auxilia is another exciting prospect going forward. The daughter of Free Eagle was a real eye-catcher on debut, finding herself trapped behind a wall of horses at Leopardstown before eating up the ground once in the clear to finish second to the highly-regarded One Voice. She made no mistake at Naas next time out, winning as she pleased and setting herself up for a crack at something better. She had been set to contest the Flame Of Tara Irish EBF Stakes at the Curragh last Friday but a spike in her temperature ruled her out on the morning of the race and the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes might be next on the agenda now. She won't be out of place there.

PASSION - Aidan O'Brien

Not many of Aidan O'Brien's juveniles tend to go under the radar, particularly if they are an offspring of the mighty Galileo. Nevertheless, Passion was noticeably cool in the market before opening her account at Cork on Sunday, drifting from 4/1 out to 6/1 before staying-on strongly to win over a mile. A full sister to former St Leger and Irish Derby hero Capri, Passion is certainly bred for the job and like her sibling, expect her to come into her own as a three-year-old over staying trips. Jockey Donnacha O'Brien appeared suitably impressed after her win at Cork and reinforced the view that she ought to have a bright future over further next year. Before that, the Fillies' Mile at the end of this season could be a suitable next port of call with races like the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot and English and Irish Oaks on the radar for next summer.

Passion, tipped up by @Ui_Maine on the RTV website, scores nicely in the @corkracecourse opener under @donnacha_obrien for the @Ballydoyle team More Tips ➡️ https://t.co/zMjpDSoMTC pic.twitter.com/kH0BdyLo7m — Racing TV (@RacingTV) September 1, 2019

UNRACED PROSPECTS

There's no magic formula here but a trawl through the big-race entries for the autumn showpieces often highlights a potential star or two. These aren't the sales' races or the Investec Derby when horses are put into a contest before they've even cantered in anger. These are costly entries to make and not every operation adopts a blanket approach to them.

ANASTARSIA - John Gosden

The only unraced juvenile the champion trainer has in any of the big autumn features, she holds an entry in the bet365 Fillies' Mile. We look set to see her in action soon too as she's in at both Haydock and Ascot this week. Clearly staying is going to be the name of her game - she's a Sea The Stars half-sister to Global Giant and all of her engagements are over a mile. She'll be a middle-distance three-year-old but there's still a chance she's going to make her mark at two.

Global Giant and Fran Berry edge out Tribal Quest

BUSINESS - Martyn Meade

Advertise has done much to strengthen the early relationship between Phoenix Thoroughbreds and Martyn Meade and clearly this son of Siyouni has been showing the right signs at home. A 180,000 euro purchase, he's related to winners from seven furlongs to a mile-and-a-half and has been put in both the Juddmonte Royal Lodge and Darley Dewhurst Stakes by connections. We might get the chance to see him action this weekend as he holds an engagement in the opening Italian Tourist Board British EBF Novice Stakes at Ascot.

DO YOU LOVE ME - Karl Burke

Another Phoenix Thoroughbreds purchase and a filly we saw on a tour of Karl Burke's yard ahead of the Sky Bet Yorkshire Summer Festival. She was just ticking over at that stage but there was a real glint in her trainer's eye when he introduced her. And why wouldn't there be? After all she cost 3.2m euros as a yearling and is a full sister to Investec Oaks heroine Forever Together. She's in the Shadwell Stud Rockfell Stakes and bet365 Fillies' Mile at this stage and her first racecourse appearance is eagerly anticipated.

Forever Together wins the Oaks as Aidan O'Brien saddles four of the first five home

SHURAFFA - Charles Hills

She's from a good Shadwell family, her dam an unraced half-sister to Haafhd. Her Oasis Dream sibling Greeb was a useful sprinter but Shuraffa is by Shamardal and is in the Rockfel over seven and the Fillies' Mile. She starts out at Salisbury on Thursday and it will be fascinating to see how she goes. Her pedigree - and big-race engagements, make her one for the My Stable tracker.

NURSERY PROJECTS

Endless joy - archie watson.

Despite building a reputation for producing sharp, precocious two-year-olds that can win first time out, trainer Archie Watson is proving very capable of drawing steady and consistent improvement from his juveniles. Endless Joy looks another case in point: not without promise in her first three career starts before running out a most impressive victor on her nursery debut at Ffos Las recently. In truth, she has probably made improvement on every visit to the racecourse so far and looking at this daughter of Showcasing physically, that is no real surprise. She should continue to progress under Watson's excellent tutelage and a 6lb rise in the weights to a mark of 78 still leaves her with plenty of room for manoeuvre going forward.

OSLO - Sir Michael Stoute

When you're a son of a Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner, who is a sister to Banks Hill and Dansili, it's fair to say connections probably didn't anticipate heading down the handicap route with you. But this colt, by Gleneagles out of Intercontentintal, is very much a work in progress. He's had three runs to date at Newbury, Kempton and Goodwood, and the penny has yet to drop. He produced his best performance on his latest start, third behind the exciting Volkvan Star. Ridden with more restraint, he was again green when losing second inside the final furlong but there's definitely something there to work on. Maybe he won't be up to winning a novice event as a juvenile but he's heading for a mark in the mid 70s which might well give him the opportunity to open his account before the nights draw in and thoughts turn to Santa and mulled wine.

WINNERS-IN-WAITING

Amhran na bhfiann - aidan o'brien.

No surprise that he's regally bred - a 1,300,000 guineas full-brother to Was, and no surprise either that he needed his first run. He did so more than most at Ballydoyle though, racing very green when sent off a 20/1 chance at the Curragh last month but making some late gains under tender handling. There's more to come, much more, and while the expected big-race entries this autumn may be fanciful at this stage of his education, it would be a surprise if he was still a maiden when heading out for a winter break. He'll be back to make his mark next spring too

TSAR - JOHN GOSDEN

It's fair to say that Kingman is making a name for himself as a stallion and his former trainer, John Gosden, has already enjoyed plenty of success with his offspring, King Of Comedy and Calyx most notably. Tsar might be another colt with a bright future judging by the big performance he produced when finishing fourth on debut in a traditionally hot Newmarket maiden at the July Meeting. Tsar ran a remarkable race to finish as close as he did that day considering he stood still when the stalls opened, but having travelled strongly at the back of the pack, he finished his race in really pleasing fashion and will surely learn plenty from that initial experience. Already boasting some high-profile late season entries, it will be fascinating to see where he goes next.
