Uitslagen UAE Tour 2023 | UAE en Quick Step domineren in spectaculaire koers, Evenepoel wint

Na de Saudi Tour en de Ronde van Oman was het eind februari tijd voor de meest prestigieuze wielerwedstrijd in het Midden-Oosten: de UAE Tour , de tweede WorldTour-rittenkoers die de coureurs in 2023 voor de kiezen krijgen. In de Leiderstrui nam je de hele week mee.

De UAE Tour was pas toe aan zijn vijfde editie, maar heeft inmiddels al een mooi plekje verworven op de WorldTour-kalender. Jumbo-Visma-renner Primoz Roglic won de eerste editie van het samentreksel van de Abu Dhabi en Dubai Tour, waarna Adam Yates de corona-editie van 2020 won en Tadej Pogacar als uithangbord van de Emiraten in 2021 en 2022 wist te winnen. Dit jaar ging Pogacar niet op herhaling, daar de Sloveen wat aanpassingen in zijn wedstrijdprogramma doorvoerde en besloot zijn titel niet te verdedigen. Wereldkampioen Remco Evenepoel was wel van de partij en won.

Uae tour 2023: parcours en tijden, etappe 1, maandag 20 februari: al dhafra castle - al mirfa (151 km).

De UAE Tour 2023 startte bij het kasteel van Al Dhafra, waar de renners werden afgeschoten voor goed 150 kilometer fietsen. Grote hindernissen waren er niet op de eerste dag, maar gewoon sprinten werd het allerminst! In een overheerlijk waaierspektakel werd het peloton meermaals aan stukken gescheurd. Wereldkampioen Remco Evenepoel werd winnaar van de dag, met een late move van een klein groepje. Ploeggenoot Tim Merlier won de millimetersprint van Caleb Ewan.

Etappe 2, dinsdag 21 februari: Khalifa Port - Khalifa Port (17,2 km, ploegentijdrit)

De afgelopen jaren werd er in de UAE Tour veelal gekozen voor een individuele tijdrit, maar in deze editie opteerde de organisatie voor een ploegentijdrit. Daarin was het het Soudal Quick-Step van Remco Evenepoel dat de zege bemachtige, door als laatste ploeg EF Education-EasyPost met één seconde verschil te verslaan.

Etappe 3, woensdag 22 februari: Umbrella Beach - Jebel Jais (185,0 km)

Na twee dagen stond op dag drie de eerste bergrit te wachten, richting de inmiddels gekende Jebel Jais. Daar was het verrassend genoeg Einer Rubio (Movistar) die met een zeven kilometer lange solo het peloton in het ootje nam. Remco Evenepoel won de spurt om plek twee en werd zo de nieuwe leider.

Etappe 4, donderdag 23 februari: Shindagha - Dubai Harbour (174,0 km)

De sprinters hebben alweer twee dagen moeten wachten op een kans en dan is het in de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten vaak al wel weer tijd voor een vlakke rit. Zo geschiedde dus ook, met een sprintersrit naar Dubai. Daar troefde UAE-sprinter Juan Sebastián Molano op de meet Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma) en Sam Welsford (Team DSM) af in de strijd om de dagzege.

Etappe 5, vrijdag 24 februari: Al Marjan Island - Umm al Ouwain (170,0 km)

Ook op vrijdag stonden er geen onoverkomelijke hindernissen op het programma, al zullen we in de VAE altijd wel moeten uitkijken voor de wind in de zandbak. De aanwezige sprinters zullen in ieder geval hun kans ruiken voor de rit naar Umm al Ouwain.

Etappe 6, zaterdag 25 februari: warner bros world abu dhabi - abu dhabi breakwater (166,0 km).

De laatste van de vier verwachte sprintritten in de UAE Tour stond voor zaterdag geprogrammeerd, als we rondom de metropool Abu Dhabi gingen fietsen. 166 kilometer over vlakke wegen, dat was in één notendop de zesde rit van de UAE Tour. Tim Merlier schreef na een mooie sprint z'n tweede ritzege bij.

Etappe 7, zondag 26 februari: hazza bin zayed stadium - jebel hafeet (153,0 km).

Op de slotdag viel de UAE Tour in een beslissende plooi, daar de rit naar de zware Jebel Hafeet op het programma stond. 10,9 kilometer klimmen aan 6,7 procent, dat is doorgaans waar het kaf van het koren wordt gescheiden in de rittenkoers van de Emiraten. Zo ook nu, met Adam Yates die de rit won en Remco Evenepoel die zijn eindzege veiligstelde.

The UAE Tour takes place from the 20th to 26th February and takes in 7 stages across the United Arab Emirates.

The 2023 UAE Tour begins as it did in 2021 from Al Dhafra Castle to Al Mirfa. It looks like a simple stage on paper with very few corners, but riders will have to be wary of crosswinds, especially on the open desert roads. This is where Lorena Wiebes took an emphatic victory ahead of her former lead-out rider Charlotte Kool in stage 2 of the inaugural UAE Tour Women last week. If the wind doesn't break the bunch into echelons, this should be a showdown of the peloton’s finest sprinters.

Stage 2 gives the teams a chance to show off the work they put in during the winter with a team time trial on a flat, wide and simple parcours. The stage starts and finishes in Khalifa Port and the only technical parts come with two 180° turns. The average speeds should be very high and the leader’s jersey will almost certainly be moving away from the sprinters, as the best-equipped teams for a time trial will be those containing general classification contenders. The 17.3km course will give teams who are most adept at the discipline an opportunity to create big gaps before the first mountain stage.

The GC riders will either be pleased with the previous day's performance or left wanting more, and the third stage from Umbrella Beach Al Fujairah to Jebel Jais gives them the chance to make amends. Jebel Jais is 19km in length but only has an average gradient of 5.6% which allows some heavier riders to stay with the pure climbers, with the steepest sections topping out at 9%. This has led to small group sprints at the top of the climb with the bonus seconds on the line becoming the most important gain. The last two winners up Jebel Jais were Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard .

Stage 4 will have the fast men excited again and gives us an early look into which team’s lead-out trains are firing on all cylinders. It will be a long 173.9km day in the saddle from Al Shindagha to Dubai Harbour however, the riders might not have to fear the crosswinds as much as they did on stage 1. Expect a less exciting run-in with an equally explosive sprint finish.

Stage 5 offers a similar opportunity for the plethora of other top-tier sprinters who are still itching to get their hands in the air at the finish. The 170km route from Al Marjan Island to the new finishing location Umm al Quwain is largely on straight, flat roads so should be relatively straightforward for the lead-out trains to stay organised. The roundabouts in the final few hundred metres are the only potential problem.

Stage 6 from Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi to Abu Dhabi Breakwater is a finish we have seen before in the UAE, most recently in the UAE Tour women where Charlotte Kool slingshotted out of Lorena Wiebes’ slipstream to take her second victory of that race. The road veers to the left in the final few hundred metres, and Mark Cavendish used this feature in last year’s men’s race to legally cut off Danny van Poppel’s lead-out for Sam Bennett and hold off Jasper Philipsen for his first World Tour victory of that season. This is the last sprint shootout of the UAE Tour so there will be a considerable fight for positioning in the latter kilometres.

The final stage has become the classic mountain test of the UAE Tour, finishing on Jebel Hafeet after passing symbolic landmarks on the initial 143.4km. The 10km climb will be a defining point of the race and will be the last chance for those hopeful of winning the red jersey to make the difference. It will set the purest climbers apart from those who could survive on the less harsh gradients of Jebel Jais as its steepest sections are above 11% with the average closer to 7% making it hard enough for gaps to form. Despite this, there have been closely fought battles to the line on the last three occasions with Tadej Pogačar taking a hattrick of Jebel Hafeet stages in the process. We will likely see the best climbers at the race battle it out in a similar fashion but with Remco Evenepoel provisionally set to start the race, we could see someone arrive solo.

UAE Tour 2023: The Route

Stage 1 is played out on a flat route. The race starts near Al Dhafra Castle and finishes in Al Mirfa. The route is similar to the opener of two years ago, when Van der Poel took the spoils after a race with full on echelon action.

The 2nd stage is a 17.1 kilometres team time trial with start and finish in Khalifa Port. Flat and straight roads with a U-turn about halfway.

The first of two mountain top finishes happens on Wednesday. Stage 3 finishes on Jebel Jais, a climb of 21.1 kilometres long with an average gradient of 5.4%.

The 4th stage sets off from Al Shindagha, a neigbourhood in the city of Dubai. The route only leaves the metropolitan area for an outing to the Al Qudra Cycle Track before a finish in Dubai Harbour.

Stage 5 is likely to see another sprint finish. The race goes from Al Marjan Island to Umm-Al-Quwain, an unprecedented finishing venue.

The last chance for the fast men appears on stage 6 . The race goes to the well-known finish at Abu Dhabi Breakwater. Cavendish, Ewan and Gaviria – they all won here in the UAE Tour.

The 7th stage will be the decisive final test. The finale takes place on Jebel Hafeet, a 10.8 kilometres ascent at 6.6%. The section at the heart of the climb is where the GC action is likely to take place, as this rises at 8% to 9% for almost 4 kilometres. Pogacar emerged victorious on Jebel Hafeet on the last three occasions.

Results and Highlights From the 2024 Amstel Gold Race

Marianne Vos benefited from an early celebration by Lorena Wiebes, and Tom Pidcock finally got his Amstel win.

The Ardennes Classics kicked off Sunday with the Amstel Gold Race, as the top road racers in the world moved from the Belgian and French cobbles to The Netherlands. The women raced first, with the men coming next.

The women’s race saw a thrilling finish, as Lorena Wiebes looked to have the race won, but started her celebration too early. Marianne Vos snuck in to take the win at the line. On the men’s side, Tom Pidcock emerged victorious, winning a sprint finish from a group of breakaway riders.

Here’s how the both races went down on Sunday.

How the Men’s Race Played Out

There was plenty of action throughout the day, but let’s fast forward to about 30km to go after a breakaway of 12 riders formed. Pidcock made his move to join that group, and from there, the gap extended.

The gap from the chasers to the breakaway stayed around 30 seconds to a minute, and was never able to get close enough.

It wasn’t to be for Mathieu van der Poel on Sunday. After winning the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix in consecutive weeks, MVDP wasn’t a factor in what was eventually the winning breakaway.

How the Men’s Race Was Won

With about 14km to go, a select group of four—Pidcock, Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates), Tiesj Benoot (Visma-Lease a Bike), and Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal Quick-Step)—broke away from the group of 12 riders.

The tactics started from there, as the riders balanced trying to fend off the riders that were originally left behind from that 12-rider breakaway and trying to get the win out of those four riders.

With the chasers coming hard, the race was on. Ultimately, it would be on of the breakaway four riders. But who? Pidcock was the best of those four, and won the sprint to the line.

How the Women’s Race Played Out

With 10km to go, it looked like a breakaway of three riders had a legitimate chance to stay away, as the group of Yara Kastelijn (Fenix-Deceuninck), Eva van Agt (Visma-Lease a Bike), and Ricarda Bauernfeind (Canyon // SRAM) held a strong advantage of about a minute—give or take—on the chasing peloton.

But as the kilometers ticked away, the peloton—led by Ellen van Dijk and the Lidl-Trek squad—finally got itself organized enough to launch a solid chase of the breakaway. With 2km to go, the catch was finally made, and then it was time an epic finale.

Though, not in the mix for the win on Sunday in that final 2km was the world champion and recently-crowned Paris-Roubaix Femmes winner Lotte Kopecky, who played the role of domestique for her SD Worx-Protime throughout the day and didn’t have the legs at the end.

How the Women’s Race Was Won

Speaking of top SD Worx-Protime riders going domestique mode, Demi Vollering picked up where Kopecky left off and was on the front to provide a good leadout for their top sprinter Lorena Wiebes.

It all went according to plan for SD Worx. Vollering’s work was done, and it was left to the sprinters. Lidl-Trek’s Elisa Longo Borghini was the first to launch an acceleration with 300 meters to go. But Wiebes lurked right on her back wheel.

Wiebes rolled past Longo Borghini and looked to have an easy win. But the veteran sprinter started celebrating way too early, and the legend Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike) emerged on her left to squeak out a thrilling win.

The results left us asking: how does this keep happening? Regardless, it’s another signature win for the 36-year-old Vos, who wins Amstel Gold for the second time in her career (she also won in 2021).

UAE youngsters set to rub shoulders with stars of tomorrow at Abu Dhabi Challenge

D espite the UAE witnessing its heaviest rainfall on record this week, Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club has pulled out all the stops to ensure the second edition of the Abu Dhabi Challenge goes ahead as scheduled from April 18-21.

The game’s rising stars and DP World Tour winners will compete in the seventh event on the Challenge Tour’s 2024 Road to Mallorca schedule, including 2023 Ryder Cup Vice Captain Nicolas Colsaerts, five-time DP World Tour winner Alex Levy, UAE’s No.1 professional Joshua Grenville-Wood and Craig Howie, who is an ambassador for this week’s host venue and has been a regular at the course for over a decade.

The Scotsman’s association with Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club began during winter training camps with the University of Stirling, where Howie found the tranquillity of the course a particular positive.

“It’s great to get away from the hustle and bustle of cities like Dubai,” said Howie, who has made the cut in all six of his Challenge Tour starts this season.

“Al Ain is a little bit quieter, so it’s a perfect place to come and work away from distractions. The course is always in great condition, and the team do a great job of keeping it like that. The practice area is as good as you’ll get anywhere else.”

Howie and Co will be joined by several of the UAE’s homegrown talents thanks to the Emirates Golf Federation’s (EGF) long-term partnership with the European Tour group, which aims to develop golf in the UAE for at least the next decade.

As part of that agreement, the EGF has received 60 invitations across the Abu Dhabi Challenge and next week’s UAE Challenge at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club to help create playing opportunities and provide a pathway for UAE golfers.

Nine of those invitations have gone to UAE National Team players, including the country’s No.1 amateur golfer Ahmad Skaik, his brother Mohammad and Khalifa Al Masaood.

Rayan Ahmed will also be flying the flag for the UAE, one month after securing both the Individual Gold and Team Gold at last month’s GCC Golf Championship in Qatar.

“I am really stoked to be playing my first Challenge Tour event in the UAE,” said Ahmed.

“I can't wait to rub shoulders with the highest quality players on the Tour and represent the UAE. My first target is to make the cut, but at the same time, my focus will be on my planning and execution, and I will take it each shot at a time.

“I love this course. My first time playing I won the Junior Open shooting 65, and last week I played the JAGA International Series and played 9 under par over 3 days with a 63, so my game is up there and ready for the Challenge Tour.

“I know the course well, I’m aware it will be a very different setting and field of competition. I am extremely confident of my long game, and my putting is getting stronger just in time.”

As well as giving local amateurs a taste of elite-level tournaments, two club professionals in the UAE are also set to rub shoulders with the stars of tomorrow.

Dubai Hills PGA Professional Louis Gaughan, who made the cut at this event last season, secured an invite from the EGF after topping the Emirates PGA Order of Merit, while Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club’s Thomas Ogilvie banked an invite after winning the Emirates PGA Play-Offs.

While the local players will be able to take advantage of prior course knowledge, the test this week will slightly differ to what they have come to know after the team at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club introduced ten new tee boxes to lengthen the course from 6,700 yards to 71,17.

With Thomas Love, Director of Agronomy, ensuring those changes to the course were made in plenty of time in the lead up to the club’s Challenge Tour debut, a new challenge was sent his way this week when the course was hit with a major storm that swept across the country.

The National Centre of Meteorology confirmed that the record rainfall that fell on the country was an exceptional event in the UAE's climate history since the start of recording climate data.

The Khatm Al Shakla area, just 36km away from this week’s host venue, saw the worst of the weather with 254mm of rainfall in less than 24 hours.

Despite the challenges that were sent Love’s way, he and his team have done everything in their power to ensure the course remains in tip top shape ahead of tomorrow’s first round.

“It's the biggest storm I've ever seen in my lifetime and something I wouldn't expect to see in the Middle East!” said Love.

“We knew rain was forecasted, so we were already semi-prepared for it. The agronomy team came in at 3am and I think the last storm was around 1.30am.

“Most turf areas were playable and allowed us to let the practice day go ahead. Bunkers however were all full, including cart paths and any roads around the facility.

“It was all hands-on deck this morning with multiple pumps and big 4500-gallon tankers working non-stop all day.

“The main goal is to get the bunkers back in play for the first round tomorrow. I'm still very confident we will have the course in fine shape for the event and be able to showcase our facility.”
