Fishing the Riviera Maya: a complete guide

So you’ve decided to travel to the Riviera Maya for your next holidays. Sounds great! The sheer amount of fish and species at the Riviera Maya is outstanding. Team the amazing fishing in the Riviera Maya with one of the outstanding hotels in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum or Cozumel and you will find yourself in a World-class sport fishing resort. From offshore fishing for Marlin and Sailfish to inshore fishing for Permit, Snapper and Grouper, the Riviera Maya is a true fishing paradise.

Tulum

The Tulum ruins are some of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico

Which species can I catch?

The waters of the Riviera Maya are rich because they receive a lot of nutrients from the Gulf Stream . The deep-water channel off the Yucatan Coast squeezes the Gulf Stream as it passes by on its journey northward. This “funnel” effect causes an upwelling and an abundance of bait fish. Both pelagic fish and reef fish love it out here because there’s plenty of prey fish for them to feed on. Here are the most sought after fish species in the Riviera Maya.

Marlin & Sailfish

Keen M Fishing Charter in Isla Mujeres

Keen M Fishing Charter in Isla Mujeres – Sailfish experts

The waters of the Riviera Maya are home to the Blue Marlin and the White Marlin. The Swordfish and the Sailfish inhabit the tropical waters off Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras and Tulum. The great thing about big game fishing in Riviera Maya you don’t have to go too far out to reach the fishing grounds.

Beautiful Sailfish caught on the Wasabi Loco

Beautiful Sailfish caught on the Wasabi Loco

The Mexican Caribbean Sea is productive all year long, but the best time for marlin fishing is between February-March and August.

Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo & Mahi Mahi

Wahoo caught trolling on Wasabi Loco

Wahoo caught trolling on Wasabi Loco

The other three pelagic species we didn’t want to miss are the Yellowfin Tuna , the Wahoo and the Mahi Mahi. During your Riviera Maya Big Game Fishing tour, one of these two species are very likely to hit the one of the lures. Wahoo are around all year round, whereas the Tuna and the Mahi Mahi are here between March and end July.

Bonefish fishing in Riviera Maya

Bonefish fishing in Riviera Maya

The Bonefish is one of the most iconic species in the flats of the Riviera Maya. You can catch them wading the northern flats of Cozumel and south of Tulum. A Boca Paila Peninsula or a Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve bonefish fly fishing expedition will be one to remember. An 8wt fly rod and reel will do the job.

Bonefish fishing in the Riviera Maya is possible all year round.

Permit, Tarpon & Jack Crevalle

Jack Crevalle fishing in the flats

Jack Crevalle fishing in the flats

Jack Crevalle, Permit and Tarpon are the other famous Riviera Maya species you can find inshore. Great places to fish for them are the lagoons of Cozumel (Rio de la Plata lagoon, Paso Balem lagoon, and Monte Cristo) and the mangroves of Boca Paila and the Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve.

The prime season in the Riviera Maya for Tarpon is during May, June, and July. Jack Crevalle fishing is great from september to January, whereas Permit are around from March to August.

Cubera Snapper & Grouper

If you’re thinking of doing a bottom fishing trip to one of the beautiful reefs off the Riviera Maya, you most probably might run into Cubera Snapper, Grouper, Sea Bream, Cabrilla , Red Hind, Jack, Triggerfish or Yellowtail Snapper for example. Bottom fishing often yields higher catch numbers than deep sea fishing, but the fish are generally much smaller. Bottom fishing trips are great for family trips or just to maximise your chances or reeling something in.

Around these reefs and close to drop-offs and wrecks you can target amberjack jigging or with live bait. The best time to fish for these aggressive fighters is from October to March.

Bonito, Kingfish and Barracuda are also numerous in these waters. Inshore trolling you can always hit one of these species too.

How to Fish the Riviera Maya

The Yucatán Peninsula is a unique geographic zone which has access to both the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, creating the perfect conditions for non-stop deep water sport fishing and out-of-this-world flats fishing. Here’s some extra information on fishing charters, shore fishing, fishing licenses and bag limits.

Fishing charters in the Riviera Maya

Going out on a fishing charter might be one of the best ways to enjoy the Caribbean waters of the Riviera Maya. Depending on the fishing technique you prefer, you can book one captain or another. You’ll find highly professional fishing guides and captains in Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras and Tulum.

Shore Fishing

If you don’t want to go out fishing in a boat, you can go shore fishing. Fishing licenses aren’t required for shore fishing in the Riviera Maya. Make sure you don’t fish near swimmer (you should be at least 250 meters away) and in general fishing in front or near hotels isn’t allowed.

Top Fishing Charters in Riviera Maya

Fishing license for the riviera maya.

If you are fishing from the shore, you will not need a fishing license. But you should be at least 250 meters away from swimmers. However, Mexico has strict fishing regulations for fishing from boats. Essentially, every person aboard a boat that has fishing equipment on board is required to have a license.

You can purchase a daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly fishing license through CONAPESCA’s.

You can find more information on their website, Conapesca.

Most charter boats include fishing licenses in the cost of the charter, but to be sure it is best to ask when booking your trip.

Daily Bag Limits for the Riviera Maya

You can take up to ten fish home per day, with no more than five fish of any one species. And, anglers are subject to the following limits: No more than one billfish. No more than two tarpon or dorado. Fish that are in the one fish or two fish categories count as five fish of the total ten fish daily bag limit. The maximum daily bag limit for spearfishing or freshwater fishing is five fish.

Will you be flying to the Riviera Maya soon? Have you every fished here before? Let us know your thoughts. Also if you have questions we’ll be happy to answer them!

TRADITION DONE PROFESSIONAL...

Melissa Fishing Riviera Maya, was born with the acquisition of a 38-foot long bertram-type boat a few years ago, for recreational and sport fishing by us, a native family of Playa del Carmen that had its beginnings in riverine fishing activities that through the years, it was evolving and learning techniques.

BLACKFIN 33 FLYBRIDGE

Mia is a great boat for sport fishing, we have it armed so that it is very comfortable and wide to be able to trolling, bottom fishing and other types of fishing. The boat is in perfect condition, it has rod holders, bridge teaser reels, fishing chair, salt and fresh water hose to cool off on board, good shaded area both in the fishing area to wait for the action and also on the bridge.

We have good sound equipment, from the best brand that is JL audio, navigation equipment and fishfinder from the Garmin brand with a 1 KW transducer, connectors for electric reels, the interior of the boat has a full bathroom, air conditioning, kitchen and a nice area to rest. Ideal for fishing with a family looking for their first marlin and sailfish.

What are the best Playa del Carmen Fishing Seasons?

Playa del Carmen is a trending holiday destination in Mexico; this is the most vibrant and most exciting place in Riviera Maya, the popular Yucatan Peninsula area. When people talk about Playa del Carmen, they usually talk about the breathtaking beaches in Riviera Maya.

There is no doubt that it is quite enjoyable to spend a morning or afternoon on some of these sandy beaches by the azure sea or to spend a night at a beach party. But the Riviera Maya is the right place for a fishing adventure too.

From fly fishing to an exciting deep sea fishing trip , the turquoise waters around Cozumel (near Playa del Carmen) won’t disappoint you. These waters are home to thousands of fish that belong to different species including permit, bonefish, tarpon, barracuda, and tuna.

When is the best time to go Fishing near Playa del Carmen?

Dalton showing off his catch during the best fishing season in Cozumel.

Riviera Maya has a beautiful climate that lets visitors come to this area all year long; this is true not only for ordinary tourists but anglers too. Of course, some seasons are better than the others when it comes to certain species of fish.

In Cozumel the climate is pretty stable, allowing you to catch the big game.

Based on these parameters, we can divide the fishing seasons in Riviera Maya into a few different periods. To understand more about the nature of these seasons, you will have to check the fishing calendar.

Come Fishing Tuna, Wahoo, or Mahi-Mahi

How does the Riviera Maya Fishing Calendar work?

Before we share the details, let us say that this Playa del Carmen fishing calendar, just like any other fishing calendar, is not 100% accurate; this means that it is possible to find some of these fish in months that are not typical for them.

When it comes to Playa del Carmen fishing calendar, we should mention that there are certain fish that you can catch during any season. These fish include barracuda, wahoo, and kingfish. If you are interested in the best riviera maya deep sea fishing trips and you want to find some sailfish, you should avoid the period between September and January.

Jackson enjoying fishing on a sunny day in Cozumel.

What is the ideal time of the year for Fishing in the Mayan Riviera?

The ideal fishing period for Blue Marlin and White Marlin is May and June. These fish are rare between August and February, and April and July are good for fishing marlin too. An example of a fish that is more available in the winter months than in summer months is amberjack. Bonito is also quite common in October, November, and December.

By learning more about this fishing calendar, you will understand what you can expect from your riviera maya bottom fishing in this region .

If you are a passionate angler or you want to learn what deep sea fishing is all about, take a deep sea fishing trip in Cozumel Island. There is an excursion from Playa del Carmen that will lead you to this island known for its natural beauty and the abundance of fish. It is a real fishing quest that you will remember for the rest of your life.

What is the best Riviera Maya Fly Fishing spot?

By choosing the best place for fly fishing, you can rest assured that you will feel all the health benefits associated with this type of fishing. Also, you will enjoy many fun and entertaining moments.

One of the areas that are frequently selected by anglers for this purpose is Riviera Maya. Riviera Maya covers a relatively large area on the northeastern part of Yucatan peninsula. Playa del Carmen in the north and Tulum in the south are the two largest towns in this area.

What are the best Fly Fishing locations near the Riviera Maya?

Arthur delighted with his fishing in the Riviera Maya.

Those interested in the best fly fishing locations near Riviera Maya should check Cozumel. In case you didn’t know, this is the largest Caribbean island in Mexico and a popular holiday destination. Do to bad weather i had to rescheduel, but that was no problem at all. Even though i had been about 12 years since i last dived, my instructor Lea was super good at making me feel safe and learning me the basics again. The dives were fine even though i would have liked to see some more, i saw a couple of stingrays, a murray, a couple of lobsters, a lot of fish and the reef. However, a few days after booking I came down with a chest cold. To be safe and to be respectful of their time, I cancelled 2 days prior to the tour. They refused my request for a refund. They offered a credit, but I was leaving the day after the tour was scheduled and had no idea when I'd be able to return. Their money was apparently more important to them than my safety or wellbeing. Whoever I spoke with (they wouldn't give their name) told me the owner (Riccardo Corra) could only be reached by snail mail. They took over $200 from me. Their representative was extremely rude and unprofessional. If you want to avoid obnoxious/rude staff, and greedy/thieving owners, go with one of the many other competent agencies in the area. • _kevingole 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Tone Deaf and Unresponsive I paid Scuba Libre for the Freediving Level 1 course from 8/13-8/14. After paying, flying from the east coast, and booking accommodation, no instructor met me on the scheduled date and time. Furthermore, (although very polite) no one in the office appeared to know what was going on. I waited around for more than an hour, and I was informed that I should have previously completed a 187 page online course. Without any explanation or apology, I was referred to Blackfin (who were excellent and I would recommend). No representative from Scuba Libre contacted me to explain the situation including: where I was going or when I needed to be there. I planned for three days in Playa Del Carmen to take the course and make training dives, due to Scuba Libre’s uncaring disorganization, I missed a day and a half (50% of my diving vacation). Furthermore, I was forced to spend nearly all non-diving time reviewing the hours of coursework which they were supposed to forward when I paid them in May. Additionally, the Blackfin course contained a third day of diving which I was unable to attend because it took place after my flight home. I attempted to contact Scuba Libre concerning this issue and my correspondence was ignored. The act of diving requires placing your safety in the hands of people you can trust with your life. I would not recommend patronizing this organization at any price. Read more Written August 17, 2023

Our guide 'Frank' was very attentive and though of everything. Snacks and water were provided throughout the trip (water, pizza and muffins). Take your own snacks if you have allergies or don't like those mentioned above as they seemed to be the standard snack for all half day excursions. Warning take a t-shirt for Akumal Bay. YOU ARE NOT permitted sunscreen when swimming in the reef.(Even environmental sunscreen is banned). This did result in some mild sunburn (we did a morning excursion early on in the holiday). Perhaps do this trip once you have built up a base tan. Also, I recommend taking water shoes as the rocks in the Cenote can be sharp, but the guide did point areas to watch out for. What's the best area of Riviera Maya to stay in?

Whether you're looking to stay in a bustling resort town or somewhere a bit more secluded, the Riviera Maya has it all—and ultimately, narrowing down the best place to stay here comes down to the type of vibe you're looking for.

Is it better to go to Cancún or Riviera Maya?

Both Cancún and Riviera Maya are beautiful beach destinations, but deciding between the two can be tricky. Keep in mind that Riviera Maya is bigger than Cancún, since it comprises several different resort towns. Since the Riviera Maya is so vast, it also boasts more hotel options. While there are some great all-inclusive resorts in Cancún , you may find more variety across Riviera Maya resorts.

Also, keep in mind that if you travel to Cancún around spring break time, you may encounter some rowdiness.

At the swanky Helios Beach Club, which is set along the resort's private stretch of sand, guests can relax in style on a plush Balinese bed while sipping cocktails and listening to live music. Not one for relaxing? You can wade into the water or embark on a scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking or windsurfing excursion.

Those who prefer to stay off the sand can head to one of eight pools, hit the spa or grab a bite (and perhaps another drink) at one of six bars and six restaurants. (PSA: The lobster is included without any additional upcharge!) From there, the fun continues into the evening with activities like cabaret shows, canoe rides and live music performances.

After a fun-filled day and night in paradise, travelers can retreat to their sleek suite, equipped with a deep soaking tub and a private balcony overlooking the mangroves. Tip: For an even more luxe experience, book a room with a private pool or outdoor Jacuzzi. Best of all, taxes and gratuities are included in your all-inclusive room rate, so feel free to leave your wallet at home, though don't forget your passport !

 • Caters to only adults
 • Taxes and gratuity are included, as are specialty food items like lobster, which typically cost extra at other all-inclusive resorts
 • Private beach club plus eight pools offer ample space to lounge without feeling crowded
 • Luxuriously appointed suites with private balconies and soaking tubs
 • Restaurants can get crowded, especially during the peak season—which means you may encounter a bit of a wait or delay
 • The property is expansive, so be prepared to walk, as golf cart transportation can be difficult to come by, especially in the busy season

Palmaïa, the house of aïa.

Searching for a restorative wellness retreat in Riviera Maya? If the answer is yes, look no further than Palmaïa, The House of AïA . This luxury oceanfront spa resort , which is all-inclusive, offers elegant all-suite accommodations: Choose from swim-out suites, oceanfront suites, family suites and meditation suites. When guests are not relaxing in the jungle-surrounded spa—where offerings include ayurvedic treatments, Temazcal ceremonies and restorative massages—they can be found along the resort's secluded stretch of sand or swimming in one of the sparkling infinity pools.

Meanwhile, as part of the Architects of Life wellness program, guests can partake in yoga, guided meditations, sound baths, astrology sessions, cacao ceremonies and (so much) more. Given the property's focus on health and wellness, it makes sense that the chef-prepared cuisine is designed to nourish the body—which is why most menu items are plant-based (think: soy-marinated watermelon poke bowls and smoked carrot toast). Food is served at four restaurants, and there's also a poolside food truck.

Last, don't miss the buzzy beach club area, which offers a laid-back ambiance, plenty of communal seating, live music and delicious concoctions that range from green juices to refreshing cocktails.

 • State-of-the-art wellness programming featuring sacred ceremonies, yoga, meditation and astrology—to name a few
 • The oceanfront locale means guests have plenty of room to roam and lounge, no fighting for a spot on the sand
 • All-suite accommodations
 • All-inclusive resort
 • The (mostly) plant-based offerings may be a turn-off for picky eaters
 • While there are some children's activities, the property isn't really geared toward kids, so those with active kiddos may not be able to make the most of their stay

Barceló Maya Beach

Part of the Barceló Maya Grand Resort complex, Barceló Maya Beach is an affordable beachfront hotel located along a 1.25-mile-long stretch of sand in the heart of the Riviera Maya. Those who book the all-inclusive rate can enjoy meals and snacks at three on-site restaurants and drinks at the three on-site bars. Entertainment options abound, and guests also have access to facilities and amenities at the other properties within the complex. This means you'll pretty much never have to fight for a seat by the pool, a personal pet peeve of mine—and one that's all too common in popular beach destinations like Riviera Maya. Guests can also enjoy access to the kid-centric Barcy Water Park (Pirates Island Water Park access is also available, albeit at an extra cost).

The true star of the show here, in my opinion, is the sprawling U-Spa Wellness and Fitness Center. While not directly on-property (it's next door at Barceló Maya Beach), it's the perfect place to retreat to should you need a break from the beach—or perhaps even from your own family (speaking from experience here!).

The hot stone massage definitely doesn't disappoint, but if that's not your thing, you can take your pick of dozens of other offerings, including facials, body wraps and flotation therapy. Any treatment here is worth booking solely for the sumptuous spa amenities, most notably a restorative hydrotherapy circuit.

Those craving more adventure can take advantage of complimentary non-motorized water sports, like snorkeling, kayaking, windsurfing and taking out a Hobie Wave or water tricycle; however, most require reservations in advance.

 • Choice between standard and all-inclusive rates, the latter of which is available for as low as $200 per night
 • Beautiful beachfront location
 • Access to services and facilities found throughout the Barceló Maya Grand Resort complex
 • The resort has been only partially remodeled, so while all the rooms are comfortable, some are dated

Best boutique hotel

Hotel esencia.

Travelers looking for a boutique stay—as opposed to a big-name resort—will love Hotel Esencia , which is located in the quaint town of Xpu-Ha, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. The Mediterranean-style property, which was the mansion of an Italian duchess in its former life, is spread across 50 lush acres surrounded by beautiful gardens. The focal point of the hotel is the Main House; from here, footpaths lead to 47 suites (each with private terraces and some with private plunge pools) and four villas.

Just steps away from the unspoiled stretch of sand that the hotel occupies is a reef sanctuary, where you can spot colorful fish and, if you're lucky, sea turtles. Those looking to splurge can enjoy a treatment at the thatch-roof spa or book the property helicopter for VIP sightseeing tours. And while there's no doubting the fact that this property is luxurious, it's not at all stuffy: Instead, expect warm, welcoming and bespoke service befitting its small size, which makes it feel all the more exclusive.

 • Smaller property lends the hotel a personalized and exclusive feel
 • VIP services and amenities, including chauffeur-driven car service and swanky afternoon tea
 • Located on a private stunning swath of sand
 • Accommodations are all luxury suites and villas
 • Families with young children may be bored here, as there is no kids club

A New Train Is Opening Up the Yucatán, for Better or Worse

When it’s a quick trip from the schlocky pleasures of Cancún to the remote cities of the Maya, is something lost along the way?

El Tren Maya, which links five states in southern Mexico, is one of the country’s most-debated infrastructure projects. Carved through the Yucatán Peninsula at great expense, the 966-mile loop pits the megaproject ambitions of Mexico’s departing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, against the will of environmentalists and Indigenous leaders seeking to preserve a pristine environment of jaguars, ancient ruins and sacred underwater caves.

The route, which partly opened in December and is expected to be in full service this year, includes a stop at Cancún International Airport, the second-busiest airport in Mexico and a gateway for international tourism, making it possible for sightseers to journey quickly from the schlocky pleasures of Señor Frogs to remote cities of the late-classic Maya. Along the way, they might stay over in the likes of Mérida, a city of stately limestone palaces once called the Paris of Mexico, or spend the night en route in private sleeping cabins traveling at nearly 100 miles per hour.

In the 19th century, the British artist and explorer Frederick Catherwood portrayed Uxmal, a gorgeous ancient city with pinkish stone structures, with only a few human figures gracing the landscape. This year, the photographer Matthew Pillsbury traveled the Tren Maya route to document the changing sites along the way, including Uxmal. An archaeologist there told him that thousands of people visit every year now, and that the train is expected to bring millions in the years to come.

Pillsbury has long focused on the ways technology changes our lives. He often uses long exposures to show how some people, marked by long, ghostly shadows, move through their environment and how others stay put. “Often the people who stop,” Pillsbury said, “are themselves in the process of photographing or being photographed.”

One picture that inspired him during his journey was a photo of his great-grandfather ascending an Egyptian pyramid with just a few friends, something that is no longer possible because of the crush of tourism. Pillsbury thought of his own recent experience climbing a temple in a remote site called Edzná, also on the route of El Tren Maya. He saw only three other tourists that day. There is going to be a time, he said, when we are going to have memories of some of these places and think back and say, “That’s crazy that I was at Edzná then, and there was no one else that day.”

On the Route of El Tren Maya

Matthew pillsbury visited stops from valladolid to palanque to cancún, a circuit of nearly a thousand miles. this is what he saw., ● valladolid.

Traveling the Tren Maya loop counterclockwise, starting and ending in Cancún in the northeast, Pillsbury first came to Valladolid, a bustling colonial city. Travelers often stay overnight as they visit sites like Cenote Oxman, one of the thousands of natural sinkholes connected by underground rivers across the Yucatán Peninsula.

● Chichén Itzá

One of the “Seven Wonders of the New World,” Chichén Itzá is about 45 minutes by car from Valladolid, the nearest major town. Many tourists take the bus in the early morning from Cancún and back again that same evening — about six hours round-trip. Spectacular ruins like El Castillo, above, have already made it one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations.

Izamal has been continuously occupied for more than a thousand years, first by Maya, then by Franciscan monks, who built their monastery on the foundation of an ancient citadel . Visitors to the bustling central marketplace can walk to some of the most important sites in Mayan history within just a few minutes.

One legend has the Pyramid of the Magician, in Uxmal, being built overnight by supernatural means. The ancient city, a short drive from Maxcanú, was abandoned after the 10th century A.D. for reasons unknown. The UNESCO World Heritage Convention notes that many of its impressive architectural features remain well preserved because of “ the region’s remoteness and sparse population. ”

Edzná re-emerged from history slowly, first as a mere mention by the German explorer Teobert Maler in 1887, then in a report by local workers in 1906 and finally by way of a formal investigation by the Mexican archaeologist Nazario Quintana Bello in 1927. On the day Pillsbury visited, he saw only a handful of visitors.

Palenque — in Chiapas, at the southernmost end of a long spur of the Tren Maya loop — is one of the best preserved cities of the Classic Maya era. It first came to the attention of the Spanish in 1567, when a missionary named Pedro Lorenzo de la Nada heard rumors of an abandoned city from the Chol Indians he was attempting to convert.

Rancho Encantado, a low-key hotel on Bacalar Lagoon in Quintana Roo, near Mexico’s border with Belize. The pace of development here has not yet reached the fever pitch of beach towns farther up the Riviera Maya.

Tulum, on the other hand, has quickly developed from a quiet escape from the tourist bustle of Cancún to its own, somewhat higher-dollar major destination. Now the ancient Mayan city is walking distance from a thriving beach scene.

● Playa del Carmen

The display over this shop in Playa del Carmen, once a quiet fishing village and now one of Quintana Roo’s biggest cities, is made up of hundreds of little sombreros.

● Cancún Aeropuerto

In the late 1960s, technicians with the Mexican government began feeding data into a computer program to help determine the best place to build a resort town from scratch . The answer came back: Cancún. From an empty beach in 1972, the planned city has become a wildly popular tourist destination. Now millions of visitors every year can travel back into history on the Tren Maya — or enjoy more modern pastimes at Coco Bongo Beach Party and its partner, Coco Bongo Nightclub.
