Solo Travel for Women: Empowering Sisterhood Awaits!

Because women love when other people anticipate their needs, we thought we’d bless you with the answer to our number 1 question:

Do Women Travel Solo?

Yes, lady. All the freaking time. 80% of our travelers rock up solo . Solo travel may not be on your bucket list, but anxious partners, busy friends, and major life events force us to adapt. Each trip develops a sisterhood that melts away all the nerves of “going it alone.” Because you aren’t alone . It’s first day of school vibes for 3 seconds and then you return home with an entire she-pack of besties who are itching to plan the next adventure.

Peep here and here for proof and validation!

Finally, you don’t have to beg your friend who hates sweating to come with you. Come as you are in your own company––single, widowed, restless, bursting for adventure. You’ll leave with a team of supporters and a new trail name.

Boob Sweat is taken, btw.

What if it’s my first time?

Got the nervous poops because you’ve never traveled outside the country?

Yeah, we’ve been there and we got you.

After booking, you’ll have access to your Travel Guide that outlines travel logistics and important in-country requirements so you reach your destination safely. Then you’re in the loving arms of your Explorer Chick Guide allowing you to sideline your worries, and simply mindlessly wander.

What about forced Single fees?

Not here sister. Penalizing solo travelers runs against everything we stand for . Instead, we’ll randomly room you with other women on the trip.

What if I want my own room?

We get it. Maybe your inner introvert needs her down time each evening. Whatever, your reason, you’ll find that we offer limited Single Room upgrades whenever possible on our adventures. Just be sure to read the details carefully as some of our trips only offer single rooms for a portion of the trip.

Single room upgrade options are detailed on each trip page under the “Logistics” section if available. These are often limited and available on a first come, first serve basis. If sold out, then the option will not be available at booking.

Not every trip has a single supplement option and some trips only have partial single supplement options. For example, a portion of your trip could be in a hotel where you can upgrade and then moves to mountain huts which by nature are group dormitories where single options do not exist.

How one woman is inspiring Black women to travel alone with her popular Facebook group Sisters Traveling Solo

sister travel solo

Meet Cole Banks, the woman behind the Facebook group Sisters Traveling Solo that inspires Black women to travel alone.

By Heather Newgen

Cole Banks started the Sisters Traveling Solo (STS) Facebook community to encourage Black women to travel alone after she stumbled upon an article discouraging Black women from traveling by themself. She frequently traveled solo and wanted to help prove that sisters can safely and affordably travel solo. STS's mission is to connect, empower, inspire, and support sisters. Beyond the steady increase in travel among African Americans, up $63 billion from $48 billion since 2011; STS has been a forerunner in leading women to discover, heal, and explore themselves through travel.

In just a few years, here's what Banks has accomplished so far.

STS Facebook group has more than 70,000 members. Since 2016, STS has planned 51 trips and taken more than 370 sisters to 17 countries; 7 more will be added to the list in 2020. STS Cultural Trips have helped generate more than $250,000 in revenue for women-owned businesses globally. STS started as a passion project for Cole. In 2018, she left her corporate job at The Coca-Cola Company to focus on Sisters Traveling Solo full-time. Now, her office can be anywhere she wants it to be as she continues inspiring people to get out of their comfort zone and live the life they truly want—especially when it comes to travel.

RELATED: How mobile app Skyhi is changing travel

STS is not only inspiring Black women to jet set around the world, but it's shattering negative generalizations and creating a wonderful community of like-minded travelers.

The Voluntourist: How is Sisters Traveling Solo breaking stereotypes?

Cole Banks: We are breaking a number of stereotypes: that women should not travel alone, that black women should not travel alone, that black women don't travel but more importantly that women can't get together and have fun without drama. What I love about our trips is the sisterhood amongst our members. On our trips, it is pretty amazing to see these sisters form a bond and sisterhood that can take many years to find. It is the common bond of travel that connects them and creates an environment of comfort and trust on day one of our trips. In addition, outside of our Sisters Traveling Solo community, we promote sisterhood by intentionally partnering with women owned businesses where we travel.

The Voluntourist: Why is it important for Black women to travel alone?

Cole Banks: I feel it’s important for Black women to travel alone because we need that mental break from our everyday routine; putting others’ needs before ours, compromising on things we truly want, and escaping the weight that society puts on us, just as Black women. We have to take time for mental breaks that allow us to sit in our own thoughts, to reflect, destress, and just enjoy our own company. Also, you don’t have to travel out the country or even out of your own state to do this. Solo travel can be done in your own city.

The Voluntourist: How the group empowers women of color?

Cole Banks: We empower women of color through our community that allows them to see what's possible when you stop waiting on other people. Our community is a visualization of what it looks like when you put yourself first.

The Voluntourist: How has Sisters Traveling Solo helped generate more than $250,000 in revenue for women-owned businesses globally?

Cole Banks: We have contributed more than $250,000 in revenue to women owned tour companies in Africa (only). For our cultural trips, we only work with and support women owned tour businesses to help us host the trips for our clients. We have done this is in 3 countries; Ghana (2 times), Morocco (3 times) and Tanzania (2 times). We ask these women tour owners to also find ways for us to support small women owned businesses and organizations that help local businesses during our trip. For instance, in Morocco we supported an organization that helps women in Morocco who are divorced, abused or single mothers learn skills that will help them become independent; in Ghana we support Mama Esther who has a fabric making shop that she runs in the back of her home; and in Tanzania we learn about a day in the life of a woman who is a seaweed farmer.

The Voluntourist: what are the misconceptions about traveling alone and has how traveling solo has changed you?

Cole Banks: One misconception is that traveling alone is not safe. But, I tell our members to follow your instincts just like you do when you’re at home and if it doesn't feel right then, don’t proceed. Also, I hear that it's not fun. My response to that is...if I can’t enjoy my own company then I’m doing something wrong. Through solo travel I have gained a better understanding of myself. It has helped me understand that the only person who limits what I can do is me. And, most importantly it has helped me understand that I belong everywhere; in every country, in every meeting, and at every table.

The Voluntourist:  What tips can you offer on affordable travel?

Cole Banks: Look for deals. Be flexible with your travel schedule. Be willing to fly out of another city that is a major hub (ie New York). Follow the popular flight deal sites on Facebook and Instagram. Set up travel alerts on airline sites. Look for alternative lodging solutions like airbnb and hostels which can potentially reduce the cost of the overall experience. Also, consider staying outside of the city centers and near public transportation.

The Voluntourist: What inspired you to quit your full-time job to do Sisters Traveling Solo full-time?

Cole Banks: Sisters Traveling Solo didn't really inspire me to quit my job. I was able to do both. The reason I left my job was because Sisters Traveling Solo grew so fast that I could no longer maintain both. And, after running out of vacation time, doing both was no longer an option.

This Woman is Helping 50,000 Sisters Travel Solo, Affordably

“As women, we need to give ourselves some time. We need to recoup. We must learn who we are, and traveling solo can help us do that,” says Coleitha Banks, the founder of Sisters Traveling Solo. This purpose-driven woman created a 7,000-member Facebook Group community and turned it into 50,000 members in a year.  Sisters Traveling Solo is a company created to help women of color travel solo.

By offering unique payment plans, travel planning services for your entire trip, and amazing vacations to places like Peru, Bali, Paris, and more, Sisters Traveling Solo is creating a strong support system that allows women to experience the world in a cost-effective way.

Six years ago, Banks needed a break. She yearned for mental clarity and felt that taking her first solo vacation could help provide the peace of mind she wanted. Banks was determined to take her first solo trip to the 2012 Olympics, and she refused to let the lack of money stop her. With this passion in her heart, she developed a financial plan, took her first solo trip, and had a life-changing experience. Now, even with a corporate job, 90% of all of her trips have been solo, and she has traveled to over 21 different countries.

Currently, Sisters Traveling Solo offers nine trips around the world. “We help make women financially prioritize their travel, and we create an entire experience that is life-changing,“ says Banks. Traveling solo can be inexpensive and the Sisters Traveling Solo Facebook Group helps remove that concern. Here are five ways Banks helps her group members find mental peace through travel in the most cost-effective way:

Sacrifice Going Out.

Sometimes it is tempting to go out and spend money, especially, if it’s available. However, that disposable income can be used for your vacation. Take the money that you would use during happy hour and set it aside for your vacation. Instead of going out three times a week, save the cash you would have spent, and put it toward your next trip. Sacrifice temporarily, to help ensure that you are living the life of your dreams.

Travel on Deals.

There is no need to spend full price on trips when there are websites like The Flight Deal and Secret Flying . On a daily basis, search for their flight deals, and select the destination of your choice.

Make a Down Payment on Your Lodging.  Never Pay the Full Price Upfront.

If money is a concern for you when planning your travel, make sure that you use websites like Booking.com so that you do not have to pay for your hotel in full, up front. Booking.com does not require all the money at once, but instead a deposit. This will allow you more time to save for your vacation, and still have the dates secured.

Set a Personal Goal, and Make Your Vacation a Priority.

None of this will work if you are not serious. No more complaining. No more getting frustrated. Make a decision and eliminate all other options. Open a separate online savings account with Goldman Sachs, Capital One 360, or Ally Bank, and start setting aside money each month. Stick with it, and make this trip a priority in your life.

Be Flexible.

Be open to departing from other cities outside of your own. By flying from different destinations your flight can be a lot cheaper.

Why Sisters Make the Best Travel Companions

So why do sisters make the best travel companions.

As an avid traveler, I’ve learned finding a great travel companion is not always the easiest task. My perfect travel companion is someone who can roll with the punches but is not too much of a pushover, enjoys engaging in deep conversation yet is also comfortable with silence, is a team player but can take charge when decisions need to be made, loves to indulge but is practical about expenditures, and is down for anything yet knows when its time to say no. I need someone who can keep me grounded when the going gets tough, who is willing to embrace the newness of everything, and wants to have as much fun as possible! After going over my list of requirements, I’ve come to realize that I’ve been describing my two sisters this whole time.

As my constant companions throughout life, it’s obvious that they’d be the ideal companions on the road. Sure, I’d be lying to say that we’re always happy campers when we’re together. I’ve had some pretty hellacious moments with these two but its never been too catastrophic that we haven’t been able to kiss and make-up. And that’s the beauty of sisterhood: that even with all the drama we serve one another, we can hug it out the end. I’m missing my sisters like crazy right now given the fact that they’re both in Brazil celebrating a milestone birthday — bottoms up baby Dre! — while I’m thousands of miles away in Vietnam. (Boo-hoo, sorta, but not really). But in honor of my baby sister’s big twenty-first birthday, here are ten reasons why sisters make the BEST travel companions!

1. THERE’S SOMEONE TO CAPTURE “THE MOMENTS”

From my own experiences traveling alone or being with people who aren’t as committed to recording every minute of an adventure, taking photos becomes somewhat of a nuisance. When you have your sisters around, it never feels like an imposition to ask for a photo every minute. It’s actually second nature that someone is cataloging the trip — if not for ourselves, then for mom and dad’s sake. Every moment captured is a way to document our family history. And the best part is that someone always has back-ups just in case phones get stolen or memory cards accidentally get erased!

2. YOUR WARDROBE WILL DOUBLE

… or in my case, triple! I count myself so incredibly lucky that both of my sisters have a killer sense of style and that they never refuse to share their clothes when we’re traveling. It’s way more practical to just trade clothing instead of overpacking. The woes of a heavy suitcase disappear completely when sisters are in tow. In fact, one of my favorite things about traveling with my sisters is that they style my outfits every day on the road. There’s nothing better than starting the day feeling beautiful because your sisters took the time and effort to make you feel your very best.

 3. THEY’LL HELP MANAGE STRESS LEVELS

While there may be times they’re adding to your stress instead of reducing it, they’re mostly trying to help relieve you of your anxieties. Sisters tend to be very emotionally attuned to one another. If someone is sensing tension, it triggers an empathetic reaction in the other(s) and prompts a need to share the burdens. As a person suffering from social anxiety disorder, I can get super stressed-out while I’m traveling. My sisters can immediately sense when I’m feeling overwhelmed and rush to my aid, no matter the circumstance.

 4. THEY KNOW WHAT YOUR LIMITS ARE

… meaning they can rightfully assess when something is too much for you handle or, if you’re short-changing yourself. It’s empowering to be supported endlessly but its also comforting to have a fall back when you’re feeling afraid of something. Its important to be in the company of people who have an understanding of your capabilities so doubt doesn’t cripple you but in the same vein, you aren’t endangering yourself. When I was nineteen, I dragged Mira and Andrea on a punishing climb up a volcano in Guatemala. Halfway up, I knew that it was more than I bargained for and Andrea was especially suffering, so I took it upon myself to hire a horse to take her the rest of the way up. I was able to address my mistake and prevent my sister from resenting me because I knew what her limits were.

5. THEY HAVE YOUR BEST INTERESTS AT HEART

In respect to all aspects of our lives, I believe that good siblings a) want you to have fun; b) want you to feel good; c) want you to be happy; d) want you to be healthy, and e) want you to succeed. I’ve seen sisters and brother move mountains if its in their power to do so, to ensure that these hopes are achieved. The benefit of having a sister as a travel companion is you have someone who genuinely cares for your overall well-being. When my sisters and I travel together, we become very doting of one another, almost to the point of coddling. As travel companions, sisters become more responsible of one another since we are personally invested in each other’s welfare.

6. THEY CAN TAKE YOUR HONESTY

No matter how close you are to someone, there’s always the fear that offense will be taken, especially while you’re traveling. I’ve seen the strongest friendships crumble because of some mishap on the road. With a sister as your traveling partner, you don’t have to walk on eggshells just to keep the peace. As sisters, you have had a lifetime to learn how to settle your difference. Also, if sh** hits the fan, they’re kinda stuck with you forever so its more in their favor to forgive and forget. When I’m not up for something, I don’t have to lie to my sisters. When I’m angry about something, I don’t have to suppress my frustrations. It’s healthy to be on an adventure where you can be more of yourself as opposed to the person your traveling partner wants you to be.

7. THERE’S NO SHAME IN ANYTHING YOU DO

Let’s be real: who hasn’t dreamed of being an Arabian princess??? Even with an angry Turkish photographer criticizing our inability to “smize** like we meant it,” we didn’t back down from a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity! Now who else would convince you that putting on a smelly head scarf worn by millions of tourists in a musty underground reservoir would be a good idea? Your sisters have seen you make a fool of yourself a bunch of times. Chances are they’re used to it by now or you’re used to the judgement. Either way, they want you to have fun and they’re probably enduring the humiliation right beside you (see picture below).

8. THEY’RE ALWAYS DOWN TO TRY NEW THINGS WITH YOU

Footlong doner kebabs in Turkey, sketchy roadside pupusas in Guatemala, questionable conveyer belt sushi in Poland… okay, okay, so new things don’t always entail foodfoodfood (… maybe to the Pulido girls it does…). But the general statement is true: when we’re surrounded by people we are comfortable with, it’s easier to be goaded out of our comfort zones. It’s hard to try new things alone. But sisters provide the camaraderie we need to face the new and unfamiliar. Sisters are masters at the art of persuasion ie. use copious amounts of flattery, drop words of encouragement here and there, hype-up the fun, and go the guilt-trip route. Also, sisters usually don’t want to leave each other behind so they’re bound to accompany you whether or not they want to.

9. THEY WILL BE GENEROUS TOWARDS YOU

Its an uncontested truth that when you’re on the road with family, they will take care of you no matter the cost. When we were children, our travel expenses were covered by our parents. They not only wanted us to see the world, but ultimately, grow closer as a family. My sisters and I shared everything on these trips: a bed, clothes, food, souvenirs, photos, and most importantly, these memories of places that we may never return to. Because of our upbringing, in adulthood, we’ve continue to give to one another graciously and generously. My sisters never fail to amaze me with their thoughtfulness on our trips: they’ve paid for my massages, covered my meals, and even treated me to shopping sprees in the past! These actions speak volumes when you take into consideration that our trips (flights, transportation, food, etc.) are all covered by our own hard-earned cash. Now that’s love.

10. YOU’LL HAVE YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM WITH YOU

When you have a sister as your travel companion, you’ll never be alone. They’ve been with you through thick and thin so when you’re on the road together, they will always have your back in times of need. The act of traveling is like being on an emotional rollercoaster — one minute you could be at your highest high, checking off a bucket list item you’ve only ever dreamed of and in a blink of an eye, you could be at your lowest low, having been mugged with no way to recover your lost belonging. In these ordeals, they will be laughing and crying with you. They won’t bat an eye if they have to defend your honor. You have your cheerleader/voice of reason/bodyguard/girl-friend/best friend neatly packaged in the form of a sister. The universe has created the perfect companion to follow you not only on your life journey, but also your journey around the world.

Sisters Travel Companions Sarajevo

Overlooking all of Sarajevo, Bosnia

As the years pass, I’ve seen the dynamics in my household shift. We’ve begun to move onto the next chapters of our lives — but in separate directions. I’ve been based abroad for the past two years; Mira is on the verge her college graduation and is finishing up her last semester of school in Brazil; and Andrea is a few months away from embarking on her college study abroad. The only time we can remedy geographic estrangement with one another is during our trips together. As the physical distance widens between us, we find ourselves growing more nostalgic of the times –and places– we once shared. It is during my walks down memory lane that I’ve been able to grasp how much my sisters have been there for me and were the fundamental piece to all my best trips. From Bosnia to Belize, Turkey to Thailand and where to next, I daresay. All that’s sure is that I have not one, but two of the BEST travel companions , and they’re mine for a lifetime ♥

Aw, this post is really sweet! I’m not going to lie I am a bit jealous of you and your sisters relationships! I have an older sister, and she’s awesome, but we have a bit if an age difference so we never really were that close. Also, no one in my family is interested in travel besides me! As a matter of fact they think I am crazy for wanting to go to other places, haha a continuous struggle to try and explain why I am so attracted to travel! I always go to places thinking it would be fun if my family were here to enjoy this with me, but I know there’s no way in hell that’s going to happen! lol You and your sisters look so fun and cute together! Also, I can’t really borrow Scott’s clothes, so my wardrobe will be the same old stuff 🙁 hahahaha

What’s your age difference between you and your sister? I have a little brother and we’re 12 years apart. I’m always thinking about how hard it must be for him to have three older sisters who are so close to one another and what that must feel like… Wait, no one in your family travels?!? That’s so crazy to wrap my mind around since I view you as someone who’s been raised to vagabond! But then again, look at how you’re paving the road for others who are in the same boat — people hankering to get out but no one else has done it around them so I really salute you for chronicling your journey so that others out there can see that its possible for them too! Maybe you and Scott could have a destination wedding *hehe, too soon :P* which would force your family to get on out there! And come on girl, we can borrow our men’s flannel shirts and make it our own! Well Tim is a simple-kind-of-guy so he would pack lightly thus giving me more space to fit my junk as well 😛

I loved this post! You and your sisters are so beautiful and fashionable! I loved looking at all your stunning pictures and reading what you wrote. My favorite part was when you talked about the Turkish photographer who tried to make you smize. Hahahaha.

Awww, thanks boo! My sisters need to take credit for all my outfits though! Seriously, I’m at least wearing one item of clothing belonging to them in every single picture. LOLOLOLOL do you know how scary it is to be yelled at by a Turkish man because your eyes are not expressive enough? The Turks can’t relate! All their women are so drop-dead gorgeous with their almond eyes. Those are the kind of eyes that are MADE to smize!

' src=

Great post, but I guess I can’t comment because I have two…brothers, haha. Don’t know what it’s like traveling with sisters, but I gotta say that I used to love travelling with my brothers (especially because of reasons 4,6, and 8). It’s too bad that we are all married and grown up now, and that they are both in the USA and I’m in Korea, because I rarely get to see them, and when I do it’s not like solo traveling. Someday I’d like to travel with them like you have with your two sisters! Great writing, thanks for sharing!

I didn’t mean to make this post so gender-bias but I’m glad to hear that some of the reasons resonate with your own siblings. We have a younger brother (the only boy in the family) and I’d like to think that these reasons apply to him as well (even the wardrobe expansion because of the tiny, lanky Asian boy that he is — we steal his shirts :P). You are going to have that someday with your brothers and it will be like old times I’m sure. Have they had the chance to visit you in Korea yet?

' src=

I don’t have a sister. I only have a brother whose work brings him all over the world. The only person left is my husband who was my boyfriend since I was 20. But I can’t swap clothes with him, haha! Kudos to your parents who gave you so much to remember with your sisters. I’m sure your next get-together with your sisters will be full of fun and laughter and amazing photos! Cheers!

But the hubby I’m sure shares his luggage allowance with you 😉 Yes, so grateful for parents who raised us to be close with one another. You know how it is as Filipinos: family first! But my dad worked in the airline industry and his biggest passion was travel and my mom worked abroad in Saudi and has traveled extensively as well so traveling has played a very big role throughout my life. I cannot wait for that next time! My family’s planning to visit me in Vietnam for Christmas which I’m praying works out!

This was such a great post to read, and I am extremely jealous that I don’t have a sister to travel with..although I travel with my brother and he’s equally fun and carries all my stuff! I found it interesting that they help to manage stress levels…I find my brother doesn’t help when I’m stressed; he adds fuel to the fire!

Dude brothers are the best! I saw the pic of you and your brother celebrating your birthday together! That’s awesome that he’s a gentleman and carries your stuff around… you raised him right 😉 Oh man, my sisters stress me out — they definitely know that — but they’re the only ones who can calm me down which is ironic. Then again, women are very sensitive to other women’s mood shifts. We’re all natural keepers of the peace! Men are sometimes clueless! 😛

First, you three are too cute. Second, I totally agree that siblings are the best companions for all the reasons you mentioned and more. Third, you made me miss not just my sister but my whole family. I’ve been travelling for four months now (South America) with only one month and a bit to go and one of the things I realised during this time is that I need to spend more time with them. And I will. Thanks for the inspiring post. Cristina X

Thank you for stopping by the blog Cristina! As a visitor, your thoughtful comment means a lot to me! Its true what they say: absence makes the heart grow fonder. Every time I find myself on the road, I wish I had my family nearby so that they too could share in these incredible experiences. Enjoy the remaining month and I hope that your reunion with your loved ones will be filled with so much joy!!!

Solo traveling basics: Expert advice for your first trip

sister travel solo

Boarding the plane to head to another country alone is often an emotional experience – there’s the excitement, the anxiety, the anticipation.

It can also be totally nerve-wracking.

When Angie Orth made the bold choice to leave her job and embark on a solo yearlong journey around the world in 2011, her friends and family cautioned her about safety concerns. “Everyone was horrified,” the Florida native told USA TODAY. “The fear was all I heard.”

The then New York City-based Orth kicked off her 12-country solo trip in Fiji before making her way to New Zealand, Australia, and Southeast Asia. Then she trekked through Europe, including Greece, Spain and England, and stopped in Turkey and Egypt before ending in Kenya and South Africa.

It wasn’t always smooth traveling. At times, Orth said she survived “by the skin of my teeth.” Orth was in Egypt during the Arab Spring , got unbelievably sick in Thailand, and had a bike accident in Bali. She was also robbed of 400 euros. “I was in Greece for a half an hour and had already been pickpocketed,” she said.

Still, to Orth, the solo journey was invaluable. “It’s a confidence that I don't think there’s any other way to get that confidence than by solo travel,” she said, referring to the problem-solving that inherently comes with navigating travel on your own. Then there’s also the compassion you gain from meeting and experiencing other cultures.

Now more than ever, more people are deciding to forgo travel companions and embark on their trips alone. Solo vacation package searches on Google shot up by more than 200% over the past 90 days as of Feb. 2.

Increased connectivity on our phones makes it easier to feel secure and social media shows more people – especially women – traveling the world alone.

“Women are not waiting for permission or their 401(k) to mature. If my husband doesn’t want to go, fine. Women are having more confidence,” said Orth, who is also the author of the upcoming book “Flirting with Disaster,” which chronicles her yearlong solo trip.

Here’s everything you need to know about solo travel.

How to safely travel alone

Safety is always top of mind when traveling, and it’s especially important for solo travelers who have to look out for themselves.

'It's like your local bestie': This startup helps make solo travel as a woman feel safer

“Isn’t it fun to meet a person in a hostel and say yes, let’s go hiking right now? That’s fun, but it’s risky,” Orth said. “It’s about balancing it out and researching ridiculously.”

◾ Start your research by heading to the State Department website to see if there are any travel advisories for the destination you’re interested in. These advisories are based on changing conditions and also inform you about the specific region you’re visiting.

For the most direct updates, enroll in the agency’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free service that sends you the most up-to-date information on the destination. It can also help connect you to the nearest U.S. embassy and consulate if traveling and something happens.

◾ One thing Orth always searches for is “the destination plus scams” to see what she has to look out for when in that place. Many European cities are notorious for petty theft, like pickpocketing in popular tourist hotspots like the Trevi Fountain or public transportation.

When doing research, it may feel like an information overload. "There is so much information now, you could read 1,000 reviews and get so many sources of conflicting information," Orth added. "It’s hard to wade through all that and find trusted sources."

◾ To help sift through everything, Orth recommends reaching out to others who have traveled to your ideal destination. She also recommended cleaning out your feed and only following travel content creators who “give you the good and the bad.”

“You don’t want the glossy, glossy, oh, it’s so magical because travel isn’t always so magical,” she said.

◾ At your destination, you’ll also need at least a basic understanding of the language used there. “Translation plays a big role in safety, just being aware of your surroundings,” said Craig Ewer, Google Communications Manager for Search.

Besides direct translation between 133 languages, the Google Translate app offers pronunciation help – “such a lifesaver,” according to Rose Yao, vice president of product management at Google. You can also snap a picture of a menu and have it translated in real time.

The Google app also has a feature called Lens that allows users to search using a picture of something like a sign. “You’d be surprised at what you can Lens: menus, what is that building or what is that statue,” Yao said. You can also capture a screenshot of your social media feed and then search for it on Google to incorporate it into your travel plans.

Staying healthy on your travels

◾ To safeguard yourself and others against preventable illnesses while exploring new places, look up any recommended vaccinations for the countries you plan on visiting. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website is a good starting point, with in-depth travel health notices and recommended vaccines and medicines posted.

The CDC website also offers travel advice on managing nonpreventable illnesses, like preventing bug bites to reduce the risk of contracting diseases like dengue or Zika.

◾ Typically, you’d want to give yourself at least a month before departing on your trip to get everything you need from your doctor. And if you don’t know who to go to, the CDC can help you find a clinic as well.

Orth recommends having a doctor help you put together a medical kit with some necessities and medications, such as for food poisoning. “It’s helpful to have some things on hand so you’re not scrambling on a remote island and no one knows what you’re talking about,” she said.

◾ As you’re making the big purchases for your trip, don’t forget about travel insurance for the unexpected. Orth said she never travels without this layer of protection. Travel insurance not only helped with her medical costs from her bike collision but also replaced her camera, which was smashed in the accident. She also recommends a service called  MedJet , which offers worldwide security crisis and medical transportation assistance for its members.

What are the most popular solo travel destinations?

According to Google, the top-searched destinations for American solo travelers are:

◾ Puerto Rico

Tips for solo travelers

◾ The Google app’s generative AI search allows you to “ask really detailed questions like you would ask a friend,” Yao said. “Ask what’s off the beaten path, what’s not crowded. What’s a great time to visit the Louvre that’s not super crowded?”

◾ For your first trip alone, it’s OK to start small and dip your toes in the solo travel pool. “Start in an easier destination, something more familiar where you speak the language or you don't have to fly far away,” Orth said. “A lot of folks see ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ and travel content creators trekking in Borneo for it to count but it doesn’t.”

◾ It won’t always be rainbows and butterflies, despite what you see on social media. Expect decision fatigue from having to make many micro-decisions, like if this taxi driver seems safe. “I think this probably hits women a lot harder than it hits men because we are never not thinking about our safety, and that’s if we’re going to Target in our hometown or hopping on a plane to a remote island,” Orth said.

◾ Make an itinerary for yourself with at least one thing planned every day, so you don’t feel aimless but still have space for flexibility, said Madison Pietrowski, U.S. brand director at GetYourGuide, a marketplace for travel experiences, where each company listed is thoroughly vetted. It can be as casual as wanting to eat at a certain restaurant for dinner or more intensive like a whole-day tour. (On that note, make sure to read the fine print and be aware of cancellation policies for your excursions.)
